Ron Howard<\/strong> is juggling lots of projects these days, both as director and producer. He’s currently directing Pavarotti<\/em>, about the legendary tenor. He also been scouting locations for Hillbilly Elegy<\/em>, a feature film based on J.D. Vance’s best-seller. And Ron and the Imagine team are back as executive producers of the new season of the hit series “Mars,” which started on NatGeo this week.<\/p>\n

With brother Clint Howard<\/strong> directing and producing (and manning the microphone attached to a shovel), Ron made a video greeting<\/strong><\/a> for September’s Mayberry Days festival.<\/p>\n

A week after Mayberry Days, Rodney Dillard<\/strong> and his band were joined by Maggie Peterson Mancuso<\/strong> for a taping of “Song of the Mountains,” the popular PBS concert show that originates at the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Va. Some familiar Mayberry tribute artists were also on hand, including one who was incognito at times. Keep an eye on Floyd’s Barbershop Bulletin Board online for a listing of when the episode will be broadcast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rodney unfortunately has also been wrestling with a large kidney stone. The first attempt to zap it didn’t work, but his docs aim to take another shot at it. (The stone is proving to be as elusive and ornery as Ernest T. Bass!)<\/p>\n

All of the Mayberry folks and their families that we’ve been able to check on report that they’ve been safe so far from the horrific fires that have been ravaging parts of California, where many of them live. Many have said they’re close enough to see and smell the smoke. And they’re not out of the woods (literally!) yet.<\/p>\n

From hurricanes and volcanoes in Hawaii to storms in the Southeast and Southwest to the fires out West, this year has seen a lot Mayberry folks and venues end up in close proximity to terrible destruction, but all are thankful they’ve mostly been spared direct impact thus far.<\/p>\n

Betty Lynn<\/strong> still holds court at Mount Airy’s Andy Griffith Museum the third Friday of every month (see Floyd’s bulletin board above for details). MODEL BEHAVIOR–Peggy as Stephanie Falkner in “The Case of the Long-Legged Models,” a 1958 episode of “Perry Mason.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Mayberry lost another of its most memorable performers when actress Peggy McCay<\/strong>, who played Sharon DeSpain, Andy’s high school sweetheart in 1963’s “Class Reunion”episode, died of natural causes in California on October 7, just a few weeks shy of her 91st birthday.<\/p>\n

Margaret Ann McCay was born to parents Catherine and Michael in New York City on November 3, 1927. She graduated from Barnard College with a degree in fine arts in 1949, when she then began pursuing a career as an actor, both on stage and in film.<\/p>\n

Peggy landed ever-larger roles in television–usually live TV shows based in New York. In 1956, Peggy earned an Obie Award as Best Young Actress of the Year for her role as Sofia in an Off-Broadway production of Uncle Vanya<\/em>. She reprised the role in the movie version in 1957.<\/p>\n

By the early 1960s, Peggy was appearing as a guest star in top TV shows, such as “Perry Mason,” “Maverick” and “77 Sunset Strip.”<\/p>\n

In 1962 she was cast as lead Anna Rose opposite Andrew Duggan in ABC’s “Room for One More,”which also starred Ronnie Dapo (aka Mayberry’s Arnold Winkler and others).<\/p>\n

A MATCH MADE IN MAYBERRY–“One of the great natural romances of all time.”<\/p><\/div>\n

After the one-year run of that series, Peggy resumed a robust career of solid guest roles, including her iconic role as Sharon DeSpain in Mayberry. Other notable work during this time included roles on “The Virginian,” “The Fugitive,” “Ben Casey,” “Alfred Hitchcock Hour” and multiple episodes of “Hawaiian Eye.”<\/p>\n

GENERALLY SPEAKING–Peggy with Peter Hansen in “General Hospital.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Peggy also found steady work in daytime TV, first as Vanessa Dale on “Love of Life” from 1951 to 1955 and later as Susan Garret in two seasons (over 100 episodes) of “The Young Marrieds” from 1964 to 1966 and then a recurring role as Iris Fairchild on “General Hospital” from 1967 to 1970.<\/p>\n

All the while, Peggy continued to be in demand for work in primetime TV with roles on popular shows such as “Gunsmoke,” “Bonanza,” “Barnaby Jones” and “Kojak,” along with recurring roles on several shows, including “Gibbsville” (13 episodes) and as Marian Hume on “Lou Grant” (9 episodes).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Beyond Mayberry, Peggy is known best (by far) for her role as matriarch Caroline Brady for 33 years (645 episodes, from 1983-2016!) on daytime’s “Days of Our Lives.” Between 1986 and 2016, Peggy was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award five times for the role. She was also nominated for two Primetime Emmys, including a win in 1991 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Irene Hayes in the “State of Mind” episode of “The Trials of Rosie O’Neill.” Peggy had the rare (actually, it’s believed to be unique) distinction of having been nominated for separate Daytime and Primetime Emmys in the same year.<\/p>\n

Through all the years, Peggy was involved in many community and charitable causes, both through organizing and fundraising. Some of the causes closes to her heart were ones involving animals–from cats and dogs to elephants. Whether close to home or across the country, Peggy would participate in the causes about which she was passionate.<\/p>\n

JOLLY, COLLIE–On screen and off, Peggy truly adored animals. She’s seen here in the role of Elizabeth Tremayne with Peter Breck and Lad in 1962’s Lad: A Dog, one of her handful of feature film releases.<\/p><\/div>\n

Peggy also stayed apprised of activity in the Mayberry community. For many years, her busy schedule and occasional health hiccups prevented her from being able to attend some of the Mayberry reunion\/fan events to which she was invited as early as 1995. She had to cancel several scheduled appearances at the last minute. But finally, in 2012, she was able to attend Mayberry Days in Mount Airy, where she delighted the especially large crowd gathered that year. (She also attended the festival in 2013.)<\/p>\n

Many Mayberry fans had also gotten to meet and to know Peggy when she traveled for various fundraisers or for “Days of Our Lives” events. She was always extraordinarily gracious about making special time to visit with contingents from the Mayberry realm of her life.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>In keeping with her love of animals, Peggy designated the Kitty Bungalow<\/a> (a cat rescue organization in L.A.) as a charity for memorial donations. She also was a longtime supporter of the Elephant Sanctuary<\/a> in Tennessee.<\/p>\n

Mayberry was truly blessed by a visit by Peggy McCay as elegant Sharon DeSpain. That performance, along with countless others, is one that we’ll fortunately be able to continue enjoying all the days of our lives.<\/p>\n

HAVE YOU FOLKS EVER THOUGHT OF FORMING A SOFTBALL TEAM?–Leaders of a few chapters stayed around for the group photo following the TAGSRWC Annual Meeting during Mayberry Days.<\/p><\/div>\n

Our “Do Cousins Count?”<\/strong> chapter (Key West, Fla., and elsewhere) made a nice (real nice) video of their Mayberry Days experience<\/a>. This homemade travelogue of Mayberry Days is a pleasant way to spend 13 minutes and 43 seconds, maybe while sipping a hot cup of coffee or cocoa.<\/p>\n

GOOBER SAYS HAY?–“Nary a Thing” chapter (Madison-Mayodan, N.C.) created this hay sculpture for the annual Hayodan festival. They titled their TV set creation “Nary Hay Thing.” Bale to thee, all bale!<\/p><\/div>\n

“Don’t Do That, Ollie. Don’t Do That”<\/strong> (Wynne, Ark.) checked in to report that “I Ain’t No Rockefeller”<\/strong> (Bristol, Va.) will be celebrating New Year’s Eve and possibly setting up a Checkpoint Chickie in Wynne.<\/p>\n

MAYBERRY SAYS THANKS–Allan Newsome (left) presented a Mayberry Friendship Award<\/strong> to Kevin Burke<\/strong> (center) of “Thumbs in Pocket”<\/strong> chapter (Gastonia, N.C.) during the TAGSRWC Annual Meeting at Mayberry Days. (Kevin also hosts the “Burke on Mayberry” podcast, which is the longest-running podcast devoted to Mayberry.) Jeff Gossett<\/strong> (right) of “Now You’re Gonna Glenn Ford It All Over Town”<\/strong> (Veedersburg, Ind.) received the Jim Schwenke Memorial Award.<\/strong> Jeff has been supportive of TAGSRWC and other Mayberry activities far and wide for many years–recently the Mayberry in the Midwest festival in particular. These two awards are the highest honors that TAGSRWC presents, and there couldn’t be two more deserving recipients. They join a distinguished group of previous recipients. TWILIGHT ZONE–During awards season, we want to be sure to give proper photographic acknowledgment to the recipient of the other Mayberry Friendship Award<\/strong> that was presented at dusk one evening a little earlier this year. Steve Jackson<\/strong> of the online “Gomer and Goober Comic Book Literary Guild”<\/strong> chapter received his award during the Annual Mayberry Meet-Up in Mount Airy in July. He is seen here with his award, accompanied by (l-r) Jeff “Howard Sprague” Branch, Kenneth “Otis” Junkin, Tim “Goober” Pettigrew and Allan “Floyd” Newsome (all incognito). Mayberry Memories<\/strong> (Eau Claire, Wis.) reports that they’ve put their Mayberry squad car replica in storage for the winter. Keeper of the Car Ken Anderson says he and his car did a total of 87 events during the summer season. Along the way, they raised $565 for their local library through honorariums and parade prize proceeds.\u00a0 That’s a cause for celebration!<\/p>\n

WHISTLING DIXIE–Colorado Fishin’ Hole Whistlers<\/strong> chapter (Colorado Springs, Colo.) welcomed special guest Dixie Griffith<\/strong> (Andy’s daughter, in rocking chair) at their meeting in October. By all accounts, it was a rockin’ time together!<\/p><\/div>\n

“Blood Brothers”<\/strong> (Macon, Mo.) met on Halloween for a pizza and chili dinner down on the farm. They watched the “Haunted House” and “Back to Nature” episodes…in the dark!\u00a0 Yikes! Then, earlier this month, the chapter celebrated International Game Week by playing cards and board games with residents of a local nursing home. (As far as we know, they didn’t wax any steps while there. We certainly hope not!)<\/p>\n

CRUISING TO VICTORY–Fresh off her third-place finish in the Mayberry Days Trivia Contest, Pat Bullins<\/strong> (aka the Lady in Red) proudly displays her latest trophy–this time for First Place in this month’s Mayberry Cruise Trivia Contest<\/strong> (the Super Buoy of Mayberry trivia?) To Pat’s right is runner-up Michelle Bryson<\/strong> and to Pat’s left is third-place winner Royleen Harley<\/strong>. They’re surrounded by familiar castaways.<\/p><\/div>\n

The award, endowed by TAGSRWC’s “We’re the Cat’s!”<\/strong> chapter (Fort Erie, Ont.), is presented each year both to salute Betty Lynn<\/strong> (who’s pictured on the award and is also the inspiration for it) and to honor people who have made a significant contribution to Mayberry Days. (We don’t think the bald cats that Floyd claimed he practiced on had a say in Allan’s being selected, but everybody else knows that he was the purrrfect choice!)<\/p><\/div>\n

The annual Mayberry Days Silent Auction<\/strong>, sponsored by “WBMUTBB?” chapter (and spearheaded by member Jeff Koontz<\/strong>) raised $4,795.75 for the Surry Arts Council, with all funds raised earmarked for Mayberry Days expenditures. Thanks go to Dewey Lamb<\/strong> (“Shakedown! Shakedown!<\/strong>” chapter of Laurinburg, N.C.) and everyone else who donated items (including many one-of-a-kind creations) and their time, as well as to everyone who bid on the items!<\/p>\n
