November 04, 2017 - Msg 108473: The Midnight Madness perfume reminds me of one of my all time favorite sitcom lines. It was on Happy Days, and Potsie, maybe Ralph, had put on some cologne called "Midnight Passion". As people would get near him, they'd react very negatively and you could tell the point was it smelled bad. Fonzie came along, sniffed, and asked what it was. Potsie proudly told him he was wearing Midnight Passion. Whereupon The Fonz answered, "Smells more like midnight pasture."

November 05, 2017 - Msg 108478: Good late evening, porch! Agree to the concerns about Halloween - it does seem to be losing its innocent "spookiness", compared to the days when we dressed our toddler son as Tweety-bird, and took him out for trick-or-treat. We were invited into homes, received cookies and punch, and popcorn balls, all sorts of homemade goodies, as grandma-types made much ado over our little boy. Those were fun days. That still happens in some neighborhoods. When Robbi and Richard are here, we have our little ritual of sitting on the driveway and enjoying the kids and handing out candy. There are still young parents out showing off their little ones, and they're still cute. When the visitors start being older and rougher-looking we just close up shop and go in the house.

Good sweep, Billy Ray. Everybody gets a turn sooner or later, and you did it very nicely. You even dusted my rocker, I see. Thank you!

A group of us old gals went to a movie this afternoon, saw "Let There Be Light". It's an excellent, inspiring and uplifting movie. Kevin Sorbo stars in it and turned in his usual classy performance. It's pretty much a family endeavor, as his real-life wife and two sons played his wife and sons in the movie. All turned in great performances, even the kids. Kevin Sorbo has long been a favorite of mine, and I highly recommend the movie.

Well, guess I'll turn in. Got to be up early in the morning to make it to preachin' on time. I've got some new dangly earrings I'm planning to wear - I hope they're not too much. --Romeena

Hey Romeena, thanks for the movie review. I will go see it. I seldom go to the movies anymore for obvious reasons. But I do like to support those who produce good and decent productions.

GF, Glad you got some Wheeler time, and I hope your aches didn't stop you from getting some sleep. Most of my leaves are on the ground now. I got a few picked up Friday night before the rains came. Rained most of yesterday, so I wasn't able to do anything with them. I hope I can get them picked up before we gat any snow.

MDC, Did you put any Oregano in your sauce buddy? lol

Gosh Billy Ray, why so dismissive about your sweeping? You may not have swept much prior, but your sweep has quality. Kind of like Talbot with his bulletin board. lol When you consider the total population of the world, and then consider the small handful of people who have ever swept the porch, why you my friend have joined a very exclusive club, and this morning you stand a little taller due to that event! lol

Well I reckon I will go find a sermon on the tube. Still not up to them hard pews quite yet. My Wheeler and I have become quite close. :)

Prayers for all.

November 05, 2017 - Msg 108482: Good morning, porch! Like a dummy, I forgot about "fall back" last night, and so I cheated myself out of an hour of sleep! A hour I sorely needed, mind you! I didn't realize it until I was setting my watch, and wondered why the clock I was going by said it was 7:50 instead of 8:50. I was ready to walk out the door, for heaven's sake! Oh well. No harm done. I'll just get in my chair and catch a nap this afternoon.

Asa, like you, I had almost stopped going to movies, until I discovered this site: www.movieguide.org. I think I've emailed links to it before. They don't hesitate to call out a scuzzy movie, or even one that pushes the envelope a bit. I've seen three movies recently, and they've all been very good, and all recommended by this website.

Well, guess I'll head on up to the church here in a bit. Toye Starr is thoroughly confused, she knows I'm dressed to go out, and yet I'm still here?? Poor little thing - she never knows what to expect from her mama, and she absolutely hates it when I leave her. She grieves! I mean, grieves! She paces and wails so pitifully. I know this because she even does it when someone else is here and I leave. My daughter has even recorded the pitiful scene on her phone. She doesn't actually howl, but it's close. It's just a soft, throaty little "a-ooo", and often closes with a tiny bark. She hangs out by the door to the garage if there's someone here, or she's sitting by the bedroom door, waiting for me to open it, if she's alone. It really makes it hard to leave her, and I don't if I have a choice. I can't believe she's ten years old. In so many ways, she still acts like a puppy, scampering around and playing with toys, tussling with Diesel, and guarding the mail slot. Then at times I'll catch her holding one little foot up, like it might hurt a little. She often stands on three legs, holding her right back leg up. I guess she's got a little arthritis, but then she'll take off like a gazelle, and run, run, run around the living room, so I guess it's not too bad. Sorry - enough about that! I just love the little thing so much.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

He is the author of deeds like this, but God is greater, and Satan loses in the end. I know, because I've read the end of the Book!

In a town as tiny as Sutherland Springs, population less than 500, there's probably not a family in the town that wasn't hit by a terrible loss. Parents, grandparents, children - all slain by this angry, demented, demon-possessed man, who is even now standing before the Lord in judgment. Please pray for all those families, as they try to comfort each other, explain to children, deal with their own questions, and all the aftermath that follows such a hellish deed. November 06, 2017 - Msg 108490: I never thought I'd say something like this - the idea never occurred to me, but with the rash of church shootings we've seen, I wonder if it's time to establish some sort of security measures at the churches? The events seem to follow a pattern - the shooter enters after services are underway. Perhaps once the service begins, the outer doors could be locked (they still open from inside for fire safety) and a member stationed inside to open the door for latecomers. If the latecomer is unknown to them, then proceed with caution when admitting the person. Visually check for the presence of weapons. If there's any question, then designated guards could unobtrusively seat themselves near that person. These people would be armed, and ready to take the stranger down, if he should initiate aggression.

I know for a fact that there are at least half a dozen of our men who are armed in our services, and they sit scattered throughout the sanctuary. One is a retired police officer, and carries a pistol in his boot. I'm sure there others in addition to the ones I know, now that we have a concealed carry law. It's comforting to know that we wouldn't exactly be sitting ducks if someone should come in shooting. Several of the ducks are prepared to shoot back.

Isn't that sad? Isn't that just sad?? That it should come to this, that churchgoing people have to consider being armed, and willing to shoot someone who is shooting at them? Oh yes, the gun-grabbers have already jumped on this, and trumpeted their no-doubt sincere belief that all we have to do is make guns illegal and it will all stop. Well, drugs are illegal, and that hasn't worked out too well. Alcohol was once illegal, and we know how that ended. As my father often said, "You can't legislate morality." Boy, was he ever right. Just for the sake of argument, let's say that gun control would work, guns all gone. No more guns. A deranged individual like the Sutherland Springs shooter will find a way. He has a cause that makes sense to him, and he will find a way. It may be a bomb, several grenades, firebombs, whatever, but he'll do it. I'm just glad he killed himself at the end. Now the taxpayers don't have to spend the next twenty years feeding, clothing and housing him, making sure he's warm or cool, and all comfy, and paying someone to trim his hangnails if he gets one.

All of this is just broken-hearted rhetoric, friends. The problem will not be solved by any means devised by man. The problem will not be solved until Jesus comes again. --Romeena

One last rant about Halloween. Of course, at the Post Office, you ain't allowed to read the mail. But occasionally you'll see a newspaper article and notice something or another, without reading it. Anyway, I continue to be amazed at how often you see on a front page the supposed Safety Rules. And inevitably, there's a mention of not eating apples or unwrapped candy or what have you. So, in my lifetime, I think there's been two cases of kids poisoned by Halloween candy, and one of them was a father doing it to their own kid in their own house. So for that, we RUIN a nice day, a day where all the adults do a little something nice for the kids. And those kids are warned by their parents not to eat any candy as it just might be poisoned by Miss Edwards next door or something.

Are you kidding me? Just give the kids an inarculation of Paranoia/Neurosis Disease while you're at it. Like someone handing out apples would slip in a razor blade and not realize they'd figure out that the kid cut by a razor blade in an apple got it from the guy handing out apples! I am really aggravated every year when I see those well meaning but ridiculously alarmist stories and wonder when people will develop some common sense. Seems those newspaper writers should act like they're somebody.

November 08, 2017 - Msg 108503: Hello Porch!
It has been a while since I posted but I have been visiting and enjoying everyone else postings.
After hearing about the tragic events in Sutherland Springs I thought about the porch with Romeena and Boo being in TX and I was not sure if any other regulars here live in TX as well but I did want to read everyone here’s reaction.
I leave near Nashville, TN and in September we had a church shooting in Antioch a suburb of Nashville; while it did not have as great of loss of life as Sutherland Springs it was tragic none the less.
In response to Romeena's post Msg 108490 about security at Church I wanted to tell you about what we started at our Church about 4 years ago.
We became concerned about our congregation’s safety because we are located within sight of the exit/on ramps to one of the busiest interstates in our state. At that time, we formed a Response Team of gentlemen from our congregation who would meet the qualifications listed in the Bible for a Deacon. This team is not only responsible for the safety of the congregation but we are there to serve any needs that any of our parishioners or visitors may have during the service such as illness, directions or if the person has special needs from a disability to the temperature and lighting controls. Once the service starts all doors are locked to outside entrance except for one main set of doors. One of our team members is located in a strategic area in the lobby so that he can see all entry points and along with that we have a Sheriffs Deputy in the lobby as well and with his patrol car parked in the parking lot we feel that it does and has deterred some bad guys from coming onto the Church property. We also have one of our team members stationed in our Children's area as well as a team member within sight of the nursery. As you might imagine the remainder of our team members are located throughout the congregation during the service and we always make a 'sweep' of all rooms, closets, offices and the baptistery before the service starts to ensure we have no one hiding waiting to jump out at the opportune moment.
Every one of our Response Team members have their right to carry permit and are armed and present at all of Church Services and activities on the property. We have enough team members so that we can do a rotation on our schedule to allow each member to have at least one Sunday a month off duty; however, each one us still wears our communication piece and we carry our weapon even on the Sundays we are off just in case we are needed.
In addition we meet as a team once every month to review our process and procedures for not only handling someone intent to on doing harm but for other emergencies such as a fire or inclement weather. We also practice firearm safety and target practice during these meetings. Our prayer is that we never have to use our weapons but we want to be prepared so that we can use them properly and safely.
I am one of the founding members of this Response Team and it saddens me in a way that I have to serve my Church in this manner but then I also look upon it as a privilege and honor to provide a sense of safety and security to our members so that they can enjoy the services without anxiousness about their safety or the safety of their children.
We have only had three or four instances where we were called into action since we formed the response the team and Thankfully each one was handled without any physical confrontation and with the majority of our congregation not even knowing that anything had happened.

My apologies for writing a book but I wanted to share our experiences here concerning Church Safety, especially with the most recent events, in hope that someone else might be able to take something from this to their Church to increase their safety.

We are truly living in what appears to be the last days that the Bible refers to but the good news is that as Ro said we know how the book ends and who wins in the end...it is God who wins and those of us who have accepted by faith what Jesus did for us on the cross we win too!

I hope everyone has a Mayberry kinda of day and act like somebody!

November 09, 2017 - Msg 108505: Good evening, porch. SMH, you have outlined a good plan here, and it's one that can be used by any cburch, large or small. A little tweaking, upsizing or downsizing is all that's needed, according to the size of the property you're securing and the number of people you need to protect. I have sent it to our missions pastor. Why him? Well, he's the chaplain to the police department here in Irving, he often rides with the officers, he's a dedicated and innovative man, and not afraid of anything that I know of. He'd be very open to this, and for all I know, he's already got a plan in operation. He would do something like this quietly and most of the membership wouldn't even know it was in place.

Our congregation is largely made up of senior citizens, though the mix is slowly shifting. I'm afraid that a significant number of those older folks would be horrified at the idea of guards at the church, and the idea that the person sitting next to them might have a gun in their boot would scare them to death. I'm an "older folk" myself, but I definitely don't share that mindset. In fact, I'm still considering getting my CCL myself, and just might have a gun in my purse one of these days. Yes, I know how to use it. It's hard to believe it has come to this, but apparently, it has. I'm still just in shock over the shooting down south. That peaceful little town - hard to believe.

Blessings, porch! --Romeena

November 09, 2017 - Msg 108507: You're welcome MDC. Glad you enjoyed it.
Anther reason I enjoy Matlock is the way Andy will often throw in little Mayberry tidbits. It's almost a silent nod to us TAGS fans. Last night he was grilling a man in the witness stand, and the man asked him if he knew what a kleptomaniac was. Matlock gave a short laugh and responded that he once knew a feller who pronounced it kleptominerac. On another episode he gave Earnest. T's little poem about "If I had known you were a comin, I'd knowed what to do, I'd stuck up both arms and waved at you". There are several other things he did like that. It really didn't add anything to the story line. Like I said, it just seemed like a small little something for us TAGS fans.

Amen on the scarf wearing GF. Boo sure took good care of us, bless her heart. I hope she and her family are back to normal after that hurricane.

Yes Romeena and SMH, Just a shame that we are discussing the security measures that will be needed anymore in our Churches. Mans hearts will wax cold though. That's pretty cold in my book.

I sure got me a nice cold already. Started in my head and has traveled south now down into my chest. Developed a nasty barking cough. I am glad my back has eased up some now. Nothing much worse to have a nagging cough with a dinky back. I have done that before. It bites!

Well better get working. Lots to do before winter hits. Thankfully no snow yet. We had a few flurries hit on Tuesday, and the mountains got quite a bit, but nothing stuck down here in the valley. And now we are supposed to be dry and a bit warmer all week. That works for me.

November 10, 2017 - Msg 108513: Good morning, porch. This mention of bacon this morning makes me hungry. I just have to share a bacon recipe with you all. First let me say, this is not "diet" bacon, nor is it recommended for diabetics unless you're on insulin and can manage the extra sugar that way. Healthful? Probably not. Delicious? Oh yeah!

Start with a good brand of bacon, thick sliced. Cut the slices in half, so they're smaller and easy to manage. Start a skillet slowly heating, with a tablespoon or two of oil in it. (I use olive oil.) Put some brown sugar on a paper towel. Put some flour on another towel. Press a slice of the bacon into the brown sugar (both sides) and then into the flour. Lay the bacon in the oil and start it frying. Turn it as needed, watch carefully and don't let it burn. It will burn quickly if you let it, because of the sugar. Don't overcook it. Drain it on a paper towel, and enjoy! I promise you, you ain't had bacon until you've had this bacon. Don't try it with any of that fake bacon, the turkey stuff or whatever. It just won't work.

Well, gotta run. Errands to do today. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

November 10, 2017 - Msg 108514: Wow Romeena that bacon will lay heavy on yer chest ! ..but we can work it off..for sure gona try it..Asa we can travel together after our retirement and put on some tool belt shows at the Circus shows....SPOT

November 10, 2017 - Msg 108515: Oh My!...Romeena That SURE sounds Great!. I’ve been getting the “fake bacon” 🥓 lately...This way I don’t get the dirty looks from Mrs. G-F since it’s uncured Turkey bacon...
Once in awhile a guy has to throw caution to the wind and go for the “REAL” stuff...10-4?.....

Asa..Yep, you are right we DID have a easy winter last year, but I got my “Snow Joe” ready to go, I always spray silicone all over it so the snow doesn’t stick to it as much, which helps.

G-Freezing.....

p.s. MDC, I agree with a earlier post by you about the cold bothering you more and your Mrs. not as much. I guess when I worked out in it you got accustomed to it more. But I hate wearing a coat so I get tempered to it quickly, just hate that first cold spell until my body and Old “Arther” can adjust to it!

November 11, 2017 - Msg 108520: Thank you, to those veterans still living today, who defended this country when the Japanese attacked us, and who defended freedom everywhere in the European war. Your service was inspired by honor and pride, and freely given out of love for God and country. Thank you to those veterans of more recent wars, and to those in the current battle for human rights that is going on today. We must make no mistake, America is under attack today. It is hidden, it is insidious, and it will be fatal if we do not stop the cancerous growth that is spreading across the world. God bless those who are still willing to engage the enemy, whoever and wherever he may be. --Romeena

On behalf of all those men and women who served before, after and with me, we appreciate that you all remembered us on Veteran's Day. And those video links that have been posted brought tears to this old veteran's eyes. It was a privelege to have served you folks and our country.

November 12, 2017 - Msg 108525: Very moving videos! Thanks GF and Possum,
and PH--thank you sir! :)
The Phx area had a super Vets parade today, among this
weekend's sports here...Cards played Thursday night, now Nascar is here, Suns, Hockey, and even High school football playoffs!!
I hope everyone has a good Sabbath day. Our
pastor's talk will be about the 10 virgins,
5 foolish and 5 wise! A parable that always
wakes me up.
God's blessings on all! :)

On the other hand I think my AZ State just has poor coaching, as we have plenty of talent.
GF--did not make it to say adios to Junior.
Years ago I worked concessions there for a few years tho.
We went to an open house of good friends who just remodeled their 40 year old home. Looked great.
Well, off to lala land.

November 13, 2017 - Msg 108530: Hey GF. So did y'all get any snow buddy?

Sorry about your fallen Dogs Spot. But it looks like your Dirty Birds took care of business. I didn't see the game, just the final score.

MDC, How is the Wife's recovery going? You better be good. She can heave that leg a lamb at you with her good arm still. :)

Well off to home for ice on the back and something for my bad cough. I have me a case of stagnation t' lungs. (Romeena will get that one)

November 13, 2017 - Msg 108531: No Asa, we just had flurries nothing stuck to the ground. Good thing, I STILL have leaves to clean up yet..Hopefully only one more day needed to wrap it all up if we get a warm day...

SPOT, I did watch the college game but NO NFL for me!...The Big Freeze is still on for me!..But for you one outa two ain’t to bad...Be glad your not a Browns fan...They are a train wreck!

MDC, I did watch some of the race, sounds like some major improvements for next year are coming.

November 14, 2017 - Msg 108532: Yes GF that's true, but they are also changing the name PIR or Phoenix International Raceway to something
with a sponsor's name in it, but that seems to be the trend.
Also, I read that nascar is hurting for $$. Some car sponsors are not returning and neither are some name drivers. Not sure what the deal is.
Hey BOO, you looking in?? You have been posting a lot of Christmas things on FB, so here's one for your listening
pleasure:

ASA--she is coming right along very nicely! Thanks for asking. She is off all meds, and doing some
simple exercises. Next week the sling comes off
and she'll start more "heavy duty" PT, so we
shall see how that goes! :)
So far no leg-o-lamb throwing here. Tonight was grilled
salmon on the bbq grill. Decided to get one of those 'copper mats' that I've seen on TV that you lay down on the grill. It still puts 'grill lines' on the fish, but does not stick. A few vegies around the side, and ya got a meal! We thank
the Lord each day for His wonderful bounty!
ALL--only a few leaves have fallen here. Still in the mid 80s all this week!
My new Christmas scene is nearing completion in the BACK yard. Will set it all up in front on Dec. 1.
Prayers, MDC

We havent seen ROMEENA for a few days. Hope she is doing OK.
I got the results of my spinal x-rays, and it is the
perfect 'capper' to my year...they show that our old buddy Arthur in my neck and lower back. I am trying my best to grin and stay positive, but it seems like I have aged 5 years in 2017! I'm sure not all people
would have such a strange year, but then not all people have an enlarged, a-fib heart either.
When life throws us a curve ball, we just hope it is not a strike. :)
What do you all have planned for THANKSGIVING?? We had it at our house the past few years, but this year my youngest brother's family is having everyone over early in the afternoon, then after dinner a few of us plan to help out at the Salvation Army serving dinners here in town.
Prayers for all,
