September 18, 2017 - Msg 108227: Hey everyone. I thought I posted a couple days ago but must not have hit the send button. Sorry folks, I still don't have cable or internet service so I have to try to type on my little cell phone screen and it's hard for me.

We are doing ok, more normal each day. Erin is still out of school due to the damage but should be able to go back in a month. We have been working hard and staying busy with clean up, etc. I have been back at work for almost 2 weeks and working extra.

I'll come leave a long post when I have a keyboard to do it on.

Glad you family in Florida is ok, Ro.

Love to all,
Boo

September 18, 2017 - Msg 108228: BOO--thank you for checking in. Glad things are getting back
to normal, except for school, of course.
Can Erin do any work on-line, or can the teachers
give some work to their students to do at home?
Seems something like that could be worked out, and would help keep the
kids involved with schooling.
GF--I hope MDs were a good time! And thanks for the
"Browns" explanation. There is a sandwich known as a hot brown, but I did not know the actual history to the team name.
May I please ask you all to keep me in your prayers. I go down to Tucson on Wed. for the special right heart cath thru a vein in my neck.
I am so tired of hospitals! I realize it can really help to show the new doc what's going on in there, but i still get anxious over these things. Thank you all! My prayers continue for you all too! :)
MDC

September 18, 2017 - Msg 108229: You have them OFF. I am sure hoping that they can get a correct diagnosis on you and get you feeling better.

Good to see you Boo. I am happy that things are returning to normal more and more for you. I hope you have gotten past the Spam sandwiches. :)

Glad you didn't take my funnin with the Browns to heart. Looks like the Bengals are OFF to a rough start also.

Well OFF to bed for me. Although I had the day OFF work I stayed plenty busy working around the house.

Prayers for all.

September 18, 2017 - Msg 108230: Stupid autocorrect. That should say you have got my prayers MDC.

Asa

September 19, 2017 - Msg 108231: Good morning, porch. A beautiful day here, but windy. Not damaging winds, just blustery. If I was working outside, I'd probably be grateful for it, because the predicted high for today is 98°. Actually, I do need to spend a little time out there in the flower beds. From my window, I can actually see a stand of those "devil-weeds" that have haunted my yard for the past several years. I have pulled them, Eddie has pulled them, we have put down corn gluten meal and Preen, and still they come. Each plant, by the time it's three inches high, has little clusters of tiny seeds at every twig juncture on the stem. How are you supposed to fight that? Let one get two feet tall, and it will, and there will be thousands of seeds on it. I wish I could find a goat that would eat nothing but that weed. I'd give him a permanent home in my yard!

Boo, I'm glad to hear that things are improving a little, but it sounds like there's still a long way to go. Wish I could be there to help you put things in order. I can't be there, but I can pray.

MDC, you will always have my prayers as you seek some answers and solutions to your health problems. I know what that's like! Hang in there.

Asa, don't you just hate it when the autocorrect "fixes" something for you that didn't need it? Somebody needs to tell that thing - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Well, guess I'll go scare up some lunch. Then I need to get into my tax stuff and get 2015 together and over to the CPA. No, I won't owe any penalties, because the IRS is going to owe me, but I could use the refund right now, so guess I'll get it filed. I just HATE fooling with that stuff! I'd rather be writing.

Blessings, friends. Stay well. --Romeena

September 19, 2017 - Msg 108232: Yes Romeena, that auto correct can be a pain. I don't know how it got OFF out of MDC. I posted it with my Kindle that also has the touch screen that I don't like either. So I must have accidently touched something somewhere to get that. Ain't it funny that how if the IRS owes you money, there isn't any penalty paid to you, but you owe them and socko! It seems like we have two sets of rules here. I best hush now.

Last night I watched the episode where Andy hooks up Howard with the new County nurse. And Mother Sprague's reaction to that. I always giggle when she asks him if he is wearing his undershirt. Yea, that cord needs to be nipped already. lol

Asa

September 19, 2017 - Msg 108233: Prayers MDC!

Thank you for the concert and prayers. I appreciate my porch family so much!

I spent the day canning applesauce and apple butter. Susan got 2 big boxes of apples given to her and we had to do something with them. I am wiped out!

Ada, no more spam sandwiches for me, buddy. Just today I was telling my sister about your comment about the spam sandwiches she gave me ("Haven't you suffered enough?")...then I see you mentioned spam again. Too funny! I think you are protesting spam to much...you must secretly want some.

September 21, 2017 - Msg 108241: Thanks Possum, but the "more later" above is...
actually, tho there was no trouble getting the probe in the vein, she could not get a biopsy
because my heart is too enlarged. (Not sure how all this works) So she's going
to try a CT scan of the heart next.
OH well, its all in the hands of the Lord. :-)
Prayers,
MDC

September 22, 2017 - Msg 108242: Thanks for the update, MDC. If you don't mind a suggestion, here's one from my own experience. I've never had the procedure you had, but have had many CT scans. They usually have to do mine without a dye contrast, which gives a pretty good result, but not an optimum one. The reason is, when they do the little blood test beforehand, to check your kidney function, my serum creatinine is usually too high. This indicates that the kidneys are not clearing the toxins from my blood as fast as they should, therefore the injected dye would be hanging around too long. Knowing that I typically don't drink enough water, and generally run around in a chronic state of mild dehydration, I reasoned that if I drank plenty of water for a couple of days before the CT, my creatinine would be cleared along with the additional water and my test result would pass. I was right. The next CT, I drank several glasses of water for the two or three days ahead of time, my serum creatinine was fine, I had the test with the dye, my doctor was delighted with the results, and I drank plenty of water for a couple of days afterward to make sure all the dye flushed out. So, moral of this long story - drink a lot of water before you go for that CT scan. That way you'll most likely pass the blood test, you'll get the dye (unless you're allergic) and your CT will produce much clearer results.

How is everyone doing after all the horrible weather? I think Boo was probably hit harder than anyone else, at least no one has spoken up. Boo, I hope things are getting back to normal for you. Wish I could be there to help.

Well, better get to bed. Blessings, all. --Romeena

September 22, 2017 - Msg 108243: ROMEENA--thank you for that idea. I shall do that! :) Does a CT scan of the heart take very long? I had problems with the MRI as mentioned earlier,
but they also had a heavy camera on my chest.
ALL--I dont know if QT Gas Stations are nationwide or not, but the ones in this area have a "QT Kitchen" inside, and they do make a very good BLT for 2.99. I add a couple packets of Hel1man's mayo to it, and i think it's pretty darn tasty!
YES, prayers continue, especially for Mexico City and for Puerto Rico!

MDC, So sorry they couldn't get the biopsy. I pray they can get the info they need with the scan and get you feeling better friend. I don't know if it is the same thing, but prior to my first ablation they did on me a few years back, they did a CT scan of my chest to make sure I didn't have any blood clots. It seems like it only took about 15 or 20 minutes and was no big deal. I was worried because I am very claustrophobic. But it wasn't bad at all. Prayers for you buddy.

Good to see you Tom. I hope you are doing well.

GF, Sorry to hear that Miss Lynn was not feeling well. It looks like Mayberry Days is real big for her, so it must have been difficult for her to be limited in her participation. I pray she gets feeling better.

MDC, I hope your CT Scan goes smooth and they can come up with an effective treatment for you. You have had a rough year for sure.

This entire nonsense with the NFL has just about done it for me also. My interest in the game the last few years has been going south more and more, and the NFL seemingly unwilling to deal with this has just about sealed the deal. And of course, there is the media, fanning the flames of discontent and discord at every turn. I am pretty sure if the media quit talking and televising these little tantrums, the idiot players would end this stupidity. I would like to see every fan quit going to the games. Once the flow of dollars stopped, the League would figure out a way real quick to resolve this. And it may happen. I am reading and hearing of a lot of fans who are done with it all. Last year the NFL saw attendance down, and I believe that trend is continuing this year. We will see.

Well off to work for me. Well into my winterization stuff now. Boilers, boiler pumps, furnaces, make up air units. GF, am I singing your song? :)

September 27, 2017 - Msg 108265: Asa, I'm sorry very sorry about little Barney. Must be terrible for you and your dear wife. Praying for God to bring comfort and healing.💜

Not much new to report. Erin is still waiting on school repairs, Sean is workingvdoing auto detailing, and I'm still working at the rehab. The census is still low but doors are still open.

We got the missing shingles replaced and the yard cleared. We still have downed trees in the very back.

We are involved with our church outreach to the communities hit hardest and we have texas Baptist men groups staying at our church from all over. Lots of ministry and outreach, distribution of food and supplies, etc. But still so much to do. I found out today that here in my town we have two tent cities with displaced families. They have no homes to go to. It's going to take a long time.

We still don't have cable or internet so I watch alot of TAGS.

Better get to bed. Prayers for you MDC.

Thank for all the prayers.
MDC

September 28, 2017 - Msg 108267: Good morning all, and thank you for the prayers Boo and all. Those first days after you lose a furkid are tough days indeed.

Boo, thanks for checking in. It sounds like it is going to be a long recovery for you all. I am glad it isn't worse for you though. I am interested to know (as I am sure GF is also) how your a/c issue is doing and if we helped at all with our long distance troubleshooting. lol

MDC, I meant to mention my phone is also one of them flip phones as well. Everyone laughs at me, but I kind of like how small it is. It is work issued, and I am going to have to upgrade at some point I reckon. I am hoping I can retire before that happens, but I don't know. We sure have come a long way since the days of Mr. Foster who had the phone in his car. Remember that episode? lol

I really enjoy watching those old Perry Mason shows just for that reason. To see TAGS actors in different roles. Old Briscoe was almost unrecognizable in some of those eps. He cleaned up good.

Well better get moving.

She has worked at the same company for 25 years,
and on Thursday they gave her a big potluck luncheon, and over $300 in gift cards. (Many of the workers work 4 ten hour days, thus the party today.) I was invited, and everyone got pretty choked up, including her boss, who is also the owner. She was Human Resources director for a small, but GOOD, electronal firm. Everything made richere in AZ! He said, "The sad part about her leaving is that now I have to run the company again." :) That was a super compliment! Maybe I should take up golf! ha

I got to talk with our sweet Romeena last night on the phone. She sent us a very nice card of sympathy over Barney, and I just had to call her to thank her. We had a nice little chat, and she is just a delightful woman. I really enjoyed talking to her. A real sweetheart.

Boo, Those stinking pin holes in copper. I know them all to well. It surprises me though that you would have one in your a/c coil so soon. Glad you are back up and running at least.

September 29, 2017 - Msg 108272: Good morning, porch! I didn't mean to stay away so long, just been busy. I've been reading, just haven't had anything to say, I guess. (Do you believe that??) No, like I said, I've been pretty busy.

As Asa said, we spoke on the phone last night. It was so sweet of him to call, and I found him to be exactly what I expected him to be. A kind, friendly man with a deep and pleasant voice, interesting to talk with, and someone I am proud to call my friend. We talked about our furkids, how hard it is to lose them, but what a blessing they are while they're with us. A nice guy, in every way.

Well, I've got to get out of here. Have to go by the hospital and get my pre-registration done, and some labs done as well. On Monday, I'll check in to day surgery. My pacer battery is failing - it's about ten years old. That means removing the old pacer and probably just replacing the whole thing, not just the battery. It should be just a day surgery and I won't stay overnight, unless they decide to replace the leads as well. If they do that, then I'll have to stay overnight, but the doc says he thinks the leads are fine and they'll leave them alone, just connect them to the new pacer. I'm not concerned either way. When the original pacer was put in ten years ago, it was a piece of cake, nothing to it, and I expect this to be the same. I'll have an incision, of course, but it heals quickly. The first one didn't bother me at all, and I don't imagine this one will either.

Well, off I go. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

MDC, you and Cecile are about to enter a whole new chapter of your lives. I thoroughly enjoy my retirement, just wish Dale was here to share it, but nevertheless, I'm not wasting it. I stay plenty busy when I want to, and still have my days when I do nothing but putter. My only advice is simple. Probably things to do will find you, but if they don't, then you go find them. That's what teaching ESL classes are for, and other church activities, and I'm free to pursue writing when I feel like it, and I'm about to join a book club, and I work in my yard when I can - just don't sit in a chair and rust out! Volunteer for something - it's very rewarding.

If the activity of the squirrels is any measure, we're in for a cold winter. They're everywhere! Carrying pecans, hauling leafy twigs to nest sites, all just as busy as they can be, and so many of them! Cute little things, I love them!

Well, I got my pre-op lab, EKG, chest x-ray, and admission interview done at the hospital this morning, so on Monday all I have to do is show up on time. I should be home for dinner Monday evening!

Have a great weekend, everyone. --Romeena

September 30, 2017 - Msg 108277: Good morning all.
Just headed out to watch the grand kids soccer games and thought I'd pop in and say hey!

Rommena, you are so kind. I pray that all goes well with the wiring job on Monday. Check in when you can after your back home.

MDC, So now you have to act like somebody with Cecile home during the day. I hope you're up to it. Just kidding buddy. I like Ro's thoughts about keeping busy.

GF, The copper T award. Yea buddy. I always mean to mention this and forget, but I have turned off the circulator pumps on all my domestic hot water systems. I noticed that all but one of those leaks have been on that system, and having done some research on this problem, I have discovered that is not uncommon. So when I ran it past the boss, he was on board. It may take a few seconds longer for hot water to reach some of the faucets, but surprisingly it's not all that much longer. And thus far we have not suffered any more leaks since doing that. But of course now that I have said this, we will have one pop up somewhere. lol I hope not. I have a bunch of pole lights that need my attention before winter gets here. Looks like bucket truck time.

Well I better get going.

September 30, 2017 - Msg 108278: Asa, that is what I found too, plus as the pumps are circulating the water causes a swirling vortex inside the pipe contributing to the erosion. When you look at the inside of the pipe it looks like "termites" have been after it. I had two building in particular that were bad for it, so I did like yo did I turned off the pumps and it helped the situation.

September 30, 2017 - Msg 108279: Good morning, porch! Wow, Asa and G-F, I'm always amazed at the scope of your responsibilities! Apparently you have a lot of latitude to make major decisions regarding how you fulfill those responsibilities, too. That's great. So many times, especially if you have a micro-manager to answer to, you have to convince them that something is needed and do-able before you can change anything at all - like deciding to shut down those circulating pumps. I can guarantee you, the hospital I worked in didn't have those pumps! During off-hours, you could wait a long time to get hot water in a patient's shower. During high-usage times, like mid-morning, when the nurses were seeing to it that everyone got showered, or bathed or whatever, when everyone was using the hot water, it was almost instant. Middle of the night (my shift) - not so much.

Now here's a little something for you guys to ponder (and be thankful you didn't have to maintain it) - when Eloise and I were in Mongolia, we were amazed that most of the time, we had almost instant hot water in our pathetic little bathroom. We were told that there is a "city"-wide hot water system. No one has individual hot water heaters. The apartment buildings, and even in our quarters - the hot water came from a central system somewhere in the little town. Now of course, sometimes it came in dribbles, sometimes it was blood-red with rust, sometimes had little dark flecks of debris in it, and always it leaked onto the floor from the antique fixtures, but it was always fairly hot. I cannot imagine the need for maintenance in a city-wide system like that, even if it was more of a village than a city. Obviously, the maintenance was spotty or non-existent, thus the rust and debris, but at least when it did run clear, it was warm and you could wash without freezing or gagging. I simply could not use that water when it was running red. I'm not talking about red-ish, or red-tinged. It was red. Dark red. You could paint a barn with it. I told Eloise that when Christians speak of being "washed in the blood", that was definitely not what we meant! So, guys, just be thankful you aren't trying to maintain that system!

Well, I've got to run to the bank. Eddie is coming to mow today, and I don't have quite enough cash to pay him. I'm paying him for two yards - mine and my neighbor's. She's in a residential rehab facility, so I pay Eddie to maintain her yard, and her sweet daughter reimburses me whenever she comes to check on the house. I don't know what's going to happen to that house. Angie will never be able to live on her own again. Her brain tumor is not operable, and is responding very poorly, if at all, to treatment. The result is that she's like someone with a severe stroke. She can't walk without a lot of help, she can't shower or bathe herself without help, and her speech is almost unintelligible. Yet, her cognition seems to be intact. She knows what she wants to say, she just can't say it. How awful that must be! It makes my heart hurt just to see her like that.

Well, away I go, and thank you, Lord, that I'm able to do it. --Romeena

September 30, 2017 - Msg 108280: Romeena, I was fortunate to have had Supervisors who trusted my judgement and experience in problem solving. They understood those of us who were on the front line in knowing what it took to get the job done. They trusted that we watched the budget, and followed proper procedures when it came to expenses and purchases.

But now a days everyone in Management thinks they know it all if they have a paper on the wall that says their smart. Nobody asks the guys with the boots on the ground and the tool belts around their waists for their opinion anymore, which is why things are such a mess...Amen Asa?...Just Sayin'

October 01, 2017 - Msg 108282: We surely did GF, We surely did. :)

Romeena, One of the reasons I really like chatting with GF (besides him being a great guy) is how much our jobs were alike. I think GF was more trained in HVAC, where my training was in electrical. But when I accepted a job with the company I work for, I was asked to take care of all facilities maint. at one of their "outer divisions. Doing so I would be doing a lot more than just electrical, which was fine for me. I

October 01, 2017 - Msg 108283: Whoops, hit a wrong key. Anyway I enjoy the wide variety of work that came with it. Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Mechanical, Carpentry. I can be troubleshooting electronic controls on a piece of large industrial equipment one day, and unplugging a toilet an hour later. I could do without the latter, but you take the good with the bad. I bet old GF would give me a big Amen on that one. And as GF said, my boss has full faith and trust in me it seems. I hardly ever see him as he works out of Salt Lake and I am 40 miles North of him. But it has been a fun ride for the most part. I've been here for going on 33 years now, so that says something.

I can't imagine a city wide hot water system. That is interesting. As you mentioned about the challenges of getting hot water at your hospital, typically in larger buildings they run what is called a looped system. Instead of running just a single hot water line to a faucet, they run a return line as well. And use a circulating pump to keep hot water close to the faucet so that you have hot water available close by. But the constant flow of water seems to take its toll on those copper pipes. As GF said, it causes a vortex situation, especially at elbows from what I have noticed, that eventually creates those dreaded pinholes.
Sorry to read that about your neighbor, bless her heart.

Well I hope everyone has a blessed Sabbath day.

October 01, 2017 - Msg 108284: That's a BIG 10-4 Good Buddy!...Yes, our jobs seamed to parallel each other. In the Public Housing world we also can be painting vacant units one day and fixing boilers the next day, and EVERYTHING in between!...So as Asa said there was NEVER a dull moment, and throw in the human resident drama into the mix and you have a story line that would make quite a book...It would make War & Piece look like a comic book....Oh....The stories I could tell!.....lol...So YES I haved EARNED my Retirement....(and my Wheeler!)....Amen?

October 01, 2017 - Msg 108285: ...War & "Peace" that is...Dang spell check!

October 01, 2017 - Msg 108286: Well GF, Maybe you and Romeena can collaborate. (see, us Maint. guys can use big words too). She could be your ghost rider as you tell her all about your experiences. Why you could be the James Herriot of the Maint. world. Just think of it GF. Why you'd be famous and rich. Why you could have a Wheeler in every room of the house. :)

October 02, 2017 - Msg 108290: GF--You could be the "Dick Lawden" of maintenance books! ha
And yes, your Indians had 100 + wins this year! Impressive! My D-backs were close, and they play the wild card this Wed.
Cecile will use the sofa as her wheeler! lol :)
ALL__I took Cecile to Red Lobster for a retirement dinner. I got the shrimp linguine, but it was concealed in a heavy sauce. Laid pretty heavy on my chest! :)
ASA--glad to hear that you and GF also have flip phones. I just don't need all that 'ap' stuff. So neat that you talked with RO. Our group is
pretty special. Speaking of which--BOO, please check in again!
ROMEENA, you will be in my prayers on Monday that your procedure goes well.
Thanks for all the 'retiree' advise. Yes, we both plan to volunteer to tutor in a nearby school.

But first, she has a shoulder replacement operation on Oct. 24th. She has real bad arthritis in her right shoulder so they
will do a 'reverse' replacement.
SPOT-- Falcons lost, but thanks for all the good breakfasts lately! Delish.
TOM--Good to see ya!
All for now, time for bed.
Prayers,
