June 25, 2017 - Msg 107736: Possum, thank you for that reminder. Rev was such a special person, and I will always be grateful that my family and I had the opportunity to get to know him. June 26, 2017 - Msg 107743: Well! What happened? That "Test" up there is me, trying to figure this out. I had a very nice post all written, and when I hit "Post Your Comments" a white page appeared with a big "Forbidden" on the top, and a line stating that "You have been forbidden to post on this site" or something to that effect. What on earth is that? Guess I'll ask Floyd. --Romeena

June 26, 2017 - Msg 107744: Apparently the glitch has disappeared. However, I think from now on I'll copy my posts before I try to post them, just so I don't lose something I spent half an hour writing. Grrr. --Romeena

June 27, 2017 - Msg 107746: Maybe she's related to The Count, Billy Ray.

G-F, I think 52 was our high today. I don't like it when summer feels like fall. We get enough of the cooler stuff all fall and winter(and spring), we don't need it in the summer.

The wife has been in Las Vegas since Saturday, and now she has to stay another day. The day she got there she said it was 111 degrees. I told her to look up our weather here at home if she wanted to feel better(since it is supposed to be summer here). I could use a little of the hot stuff. Maybe not 111 degree hot, but warmer than this.
Actually we are due for a warm up this week, if the weather girl knows what she is talking about. Of course, it always has to bring along some rain and thunderstorms with it. Blehhh.

Saw your post about Newhart and Mary Frann, Asa. Sorry, I know, it was long ago. I did read something that when she died she was on some strict diet maybe even using pills and that could have exacerbated her heart condition. But that's just scuttlebutt. Though being that I am in my early 50's now(ok, very early) I like to think there was something more than just her heart gave out when someone dies like that.

Another thing I noticed while watching the Newhart episodes again that I had forgotten, is that Howard Sprague himself was on the first episode of that show. He played the realtor who sold the inn to Bob and Joanne.
But there he was, bow tie and all. I don't think Jack even owns a regular tie.
What also stood out was how tall Jack Dodson was. Either that or Bob Newhart was just really short. Or both, but I think I noticed that Jack was real tall on TAGS as well.

I started getting into a western show that I had never seen before, called Laramie. I really like these channels I get with my antenna on the roof because they play some good shows.
Robert Fuller from Emergency is in this show, and is he ever one quick draw. He may be just an actor, but that boy can shoot. I don't know, he may not be able to hit the broad side of a barn in real life, but he has one fast draw. I did some reading up on Robert Fuller and found he is a rancher in real life so maybe he can shoot too.

Well, I'd better get going to bed soon.
Have a good night everyone!

June 27, 2017 - Msg 107749: Howdy, porch. I just sent an APB out to Boo by email, hope we'll hear from her soon. I worry when she misses too many days.

And a big "Hi O" to you too, TOM. It's about time for another poem from you. We always enjoy those little inspirational pick-me-ups. You have a real knack for presenting just the right one at the right time.

Big Maude, I see you've been doing first one thing and then the other. Maybe you should throw in a little of this and that, just to break the monotony.

I had my pacer "interrogation" this morning. That just means they put a sensor over the pacer, and it transmits all pertinent information it has stored over the last six months. Mine says all is well, being used less than 5% of the time, going to age out before it wears out. Doc is talking about replacing in in the next six months to a year. It will soon be ten years old. The battery is still strong, but they like to replace them anyway at ten years, and usually just replace the whole thing, not just the battery, because there are so many improvements in them. It's the same procedure, whether they change the battery or replace the pacer itself. Small incision, no big deal.

Tomorrow I go for a CT scan of my chest and total abdomen. Following up on an enlarged lymph node found earlier, and checking lungs, and distal nodes as well. The doctor doesn't expect any problems, but wants to be sure. I agree!

Toye Starr had lost her favorite toy, Pink Heart, and we couldn't find it anywhere. She was just grieving, because she carries that thing with her everywhere. All crunchy and stinky after about six years, but she loves it. I've hunted for a new one, but am told the company doesn't make that particular one anymore. Anyway, this morning I kept hearing a scratching sound, finally realized it was her. She was scratching at the outside of a little toy box that's not being used, as her toys have overflowed it and we went to a big flat basket. The little box has a lid, which was on the box, but upside down and nested in the box, so she couldn't remove it. I checked, and guess what I found! Yep, Pink Heart was in the box. I guess she smelled it. It's been missing for weeks! I gave it to her, she grabbed it and ran all over the house with it, tossing it, retrieving it, stopping to cuddle with it, running past me holding it up high, like "Look, Mom, what I've got!" Sweet little thing. Finding that grungy little toy just made my day, and just put Toye Starr in ecstasy. It's the little things.... --Romeena

June 28, 2017 - Msg 107754: Yep, MDC, I get all those shows over-the-air. All except Little House, but then I received the whole series as a birthday present one year, so all I have to do is pop one in the dvd player whenever I want to see that show. Which I actually have been watching lately.
But my favorite "Western" Westerns are probably The Rifleman and Wanted: Dead Or Alive.
And yes, it is nice not to have that cable bill. The tv portion of it anyway, since we still use the company for internet.
Hope your health issues are improving.

Prayers for your CT scan, Romeena. Hope everything turns out ok.

I think we could all use what's in that poem, Tom. Thank you.

June 28, 2017 - Msg 107755: Good evening, Porch

Tis' late night greetings at 11:41 CT. Don't know if I could hold a match to those late nights Barney wrote about in his letters to Andy!

Romeena - I HATE when I lose something I wrote for so long! Grrrr is right! I had a history piece I was writing for a history society magazine disappear once! I sat drop jawed and in a deep stare at the screen! Then...the anger hit. I certainly hope your tests tomorrow go thru with flying colors! Your story about Toye Starr made me grin ear to ear!

Sterling - My dad (who is now 87) has been to Vegas a couple of times. When he sees a movie ro TV show with Vegas in it, he points out everywhere he was. He, as well as I, are big fans of The Rifleman! It's like TAGS, I could watch easch episode over and over. My dad also likes Laramie, Wanted, etc. But Rifleman is tops over all.

Big Maude - Dang! I missed your lunch. I hate when I do that! I too have been busy, busy! Seems like just when I get something almost to it's finish...something new crops up, waiting to be done. The finish line has GOT to be there somewhere! I think Opie will cross it before I do!

MDC - The Very Best wishes for your health! Wife and I are thinking of getting my dad modern "rabbit ears" to get some of those tv shows. But where we are in Missouri, not sure they would work ?!

TOM - Your poem is well needed in this day and age of chaos and unrest. As me father-in-law says.."Keep your eyes up!"

Boo - *whistle* Hey Boo...where ya' hidin'?! Hope you didnt decide to call yourself "Tex" and run away from home! ;) Seriously, hope you and the family are OK and your absence isnt anything for us to worry about!

G-F - Hey GF, whaddya' think about my resurgent Royals! Man, we had them fried, cooked and done and, dog gone it, if they havent found the magic again! The question is...how long will it last! Looks like your guys are playing musical chairs with the Twins! Between the Indians, Twins and Royals, this could be VERY interesting after the All Star break!

Well, better hit that pillow! Hey and Hi to possum, Asa, Lucy and everyone else with tickets to go see Clarence Earp! Have a great night, folks!

June 28, 2017 - Msg 107756: Oh, by the way, folks...I wanted to let you all know that I closed down my blog, "First One Thing, Then Another."
I am about to start doing some history work and, once I get started on it, I am clearing my mind of all political news and stories. I couldve done a personal blog, but I thought I should buckle down and concentrate fully on what I will be working on. Sorry if you all liked visiting it. Maybe someday I'll get another one going.
Night all!

John Masters

June 28, 2017 - Msg 107757: Good evening, porch. John Masters, it's good to hear from you. Sorry to lose your blog, you do tell it like it is! You're right, though. If you're involved in another project (writing?) you will need your mind cleared of all else. I think that's why my book was written mostly at night, when other things had been shut down.

I'll be hitting the ironing board a little earlier than usual tonight, just a few minutes after midnight. I'm usually up until at least 2 or 3, then sleep until 8:30 or 9. Seventeen years on night shift will do that to ya! So, I tossed Toye Starr up on the bed before I sat down here, to let her get settled in. I just noticed that Pink Heart is on the floor by the bed, she's lying with her head just over the edge of the bed, gazing at her beloved toy. I guess I'll have to put it up there too, or she won't rest. I just hope she doesn't put the grubby little thing too close to me! No, it's not washable, but I wish it was. I sure do wish I could find some new ones, I'd buy half a dozen! She will accept a new one, the one she has now is her third one. She has dozens of toys, and she plays with most of them, but Pink Heart is by far her favorite, and the one she carries around the most.

Well, I've got to get up much too early, have to be at the hospital by 7 for that CT scan. I usually don't drink a lot of water, never have, which means that I usually can't get clearance for them to use dye in the CT, and my doctor really wants this one to be with contrast. So, I've been drinking water and tea all evening, and I practically slosh when I walk. I hope this has flushed enough creatinine out of my blood to allow them to use the dye. I also hope I can sleep tonight - will probably have to get up about every hour. Oh well. There's always tomorrow night to sleep. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

June 28, 2017 - Msg 107758: RO-my prayers are with you concerning the CT scan, with contrast where they inject you. I have sure
'been there, done that' recently! I also drank a lot of water after the test

Hmm..no lunch menu. Well, I'll go ahead and set down a couple of pitchers of tea here. Sugar and sweetener is on the shelf under them. Sweeten to your liking!

Just finished up mowing my grass down by my driveway gates and up around the driveway near my house. Not too sweaty, but dirty and grassy! Got up to 30 MPH wind gusts here. That cut grass comes out from under and just cascades over you if you turn against the wind.

MDC - Yeah, your DBacks are giving people some problems. I dont see them falling off anytime soon!

G-F - I've never been to a minor league game as such. I have been to a couple of Kansas City TBones games. They are in the independent American Association, I believe. They have some cool promotions.

June 28, 2017 - Msg 107763: I'm very sorry to have worried you all. I am ok but my computer is in pieces all over the desk and has been for for over a week. I have my smart phone but I have such a hard time typing on it that I just avoid it. Its ok for facebook since I only make short comments. Right now I am borrowing a laptop to check in. Poor bruce is working on fixing mine, but he is so busy with work and works overtime nearly every night, that I hate to bug him about it. Also, I have been working a stretch and am busy or tired all the time. On my days off there are appointments and housework, laundry, grocery shopping...you all know how it is. I never forget you all and think of you often. Hope you are all well.

We finally got the sprinkler system finished and got the grass seed planted a week ago today....then the tropical storm came in north of us and has been dumping rain on us like crazy. I think a lot of the grass seed was washed into clumps or down into the soil. There is grass coming up in patches but no even coverage and some large areas show no growth at all. We will be spreading more seed, for sure.

We are all getting along but have problems like the rest of you. We just keep moving forward.

Will try to check in again soon.

Love to All,
Boo

June 29, 2017 - Msg 107764: Thanks, Boo. It's good to know you're okay. Sorry about your computer, hope it gets fixed soon. I feel lost when mine isn't working. Funny how quickly something becomes a vital part of our life. Like someone said, "If necessity is the mother of invention, then invention is the father of necessity." So true.

What you said about the grass seed reminded me of the time my dad planted oats on our pasture when we lived in the country. We had six acres total, with the house, lawn, garden and outbuildings taking up about an acre of it. The remaining five acres were pasture, with lots of mesquite trees on it. There wasn't a lot of native grass, so my dad just scattered bushels and bushels of oats on the pasture, just before rain was expected. The rain didn't come, and the oats were just lying there. Daddy had chain-dragged it behind a little tractor, which pulled a thin layer of soil over the seed, but my smart and devious horse, Ace, realized those oats were there, and he liked oats. So, every day, he would spend all day walking over the pasture with his nose to the ground. My dad finally figured out what he was doing, and had me keep him corralled until those oats finally took hold. He was blowing a blast through his nose, which blew the dirt off the oats, then he would stick out his tongue and touch it to the few oats that his breath had exposed, and would eat the oats. If it was a handful, or one oat, he would do the same thing. Never mind that he got a quart of oats every evening, got flakes of coastal bermuda hay and a block of alfalfa every day, and countless carrots and apples as treats whenever people were around. All that, and he was still picking up oats, one at a time! He was a lovable knothead.

Well, guess I'll turn in. Got to get up early again tomorrow, another doctor's appointment at 8:30. Dermatologist this time, to check out all the barnacles that come with age, to make sure none are a threat. You never know.

Blessings, friends. --Romeena

June 29, 2017 - Msg 107769: Good Afternoon Porch!
This week has been flying by! My calendar at work goes by the school year so I have started putting my content planning in the new one for July. It's hard to believe that the year is half over and it's less than 6 months until Christmas! I'd say time flies when you're having fun but it's more time flies when you're working all day then crashing all night. Ha!

We get the channels y'all are referring like Grit and Me through our cable provider. Because we have a apartment above us we cannot use an antennae. We tried a few years ago when the government was giving them out for free. We have a ton of trees behind our house too and so I'm wondering if that affected the frequency. I wish we didn't have to pay cable as for basic it's $40/month. I like my Hallmark channel too.

John- You ought to know that sugar does not mix well in cold tea. So, there needs to be a pitcher of already sweetened and one not. I'm sorry about your blog. I've closed mine off and on for years for various reasons but mostly because of my husband's ex that was stalking me. I've been a horrible blogger lately. I wish you all the best on your new endeavors.

Boo- I'm sorry about your computer. I've been making a conscientious effort to avoid my phone and internet when I get home from work and limit it on the weekend. There's so many studies saying how bad looking at a screen is for your mental state and health. So try to enjoy it being down a bit.

Romeena- I hope all of your visits and procedures go well.

Possum- When I saw the notification of Rev's birthday on Facebook I was sad for his family and friends (us) but so grateful to know he is in heaven with our heavenly Father singing amongst the angels.

Tom- Your poems are so wonderful!

APB for Asa! Is anyone friends with him on Facebook?

MDC- I hope y'all get some rain right quick (as my Nana would say).

Sterling- It's neat how much traveling your wife is able to do! I'm green with envy. Mary Fran could have had an undiagnosed heart issue complicated with a strict diet. If she's not getting enough potassium then that can easily happen.

Big Maude- I'm glad you haven't had too hot of a summer just yet.

G-F- Did you go to the game? My company has awesome seats behind the pitcher at the new Sun Trust Park but I really don't care to go on a weeknight and that's when employees get use of the tickets. I may have to just drink some Starbucks the next morning and go for the experience.

Y'all have a wonderful rest of the day!

The Dick Van Dyke show was a TV classic, and I wish it would come back in reruns. Incredible writing, perfect casting, just funny, funny stuff, every time. Compare it to the weak, pitiful garbage they produce now and there's no comparison. --Romeena

July 02, 2017 - Msg 107779: Good afternoon, porch. Just got home from preachin', got into my comfies, and am going to round up a good meal, made entirely of leftovers in a few minutes. Our choir gave a mighty presentation of patriotic music, just beautiful. Tears in many eyes, including mine. I miss singing in the choir, but those days are gone. I used to carry a fairly decent choir alto, but no more. With my diminishing lung capacity, I just can't sing anymore. Makes me sad, but my ears work, and I can enjoy the music made by the choir. We have some beautiful voices in our choir, and I love to hear them.

Our pastor delivered a barn-burner, as usual. He has announced his retirement, effective in August, and I'm so sorry. I just can't imagine how we will get along without him, but I know we will. When his predecessor retired nearly thirty years ago, I couldn't imagine how we would manage without him either, but God had his man waiting and ready, and He will do it again, I'm sure.

Just got the results on Friday, of the echocardiogram that I had. The report says there is no change in the leaky valves, no better, no worse, and believe it or not, my ejection fraction is a cool and beautiful 60%, up from 55% on the last one.

Well, guess I'll mosey. My chair is calling me, and I need to round up those leftovers. Blessings, porch! --Romeena

July 02, 2017 - Msg 107780: Good evening, folks!

Asa - Good to see you!

Romeena - I know about losing great preachers. The pastor for my childhood church was one of the best! He left Kansas City for better pastures in Texas somewhere. We learned years later that he was killed in a motorcycle accident. I forgot if he lost control or exactly what happened. But he was a very kind, thoughtful and gentle man. Couldn't have ordered a better one! A few years ago, my childhood church closed it's doors for the last time. THAT was a heart break-er! I had flooding memories of my church and to hear it had to close just sunk my spirit. Glad to hear you are holding steady. "No worse" is always good!

Shout out to MDC, Boo, TOM, SPOT, Maude, possum, Lucy and everyone else waiting for the Mendlebright sisters to quit tying up the line!

Us folks here in Canada had our fireworks this past Saturday because July 1st is Canada Day, a national holiday. And this year, Canada is celebrating their 150th year since the three original provinces (states) back in 1867 joined together into a Dominion (country) named Canada.

July 03, 2017 - Msg 107782: PH--and wasn't alcohol banned for a while, and thus the drink "Canada Dry" was born? har har. Hey congrats to Canada. I heard that royalty was on hand!
RO--sorry to hear of you pastors retirement. I know how fond you are of him, but as you say, I am sure another good one is waiting in the wings.
JOHN--my landline went dead completely today, so will have to call Century Link and see what's up.
Hey SPOT, yes that was quite a night race at Daytona! Good senior golf tourney today too. Good to see Perry win it!
ASA, the treatments are going along, but dont seem to be doing much after three weeks. But I may get a 'pump sleeve' for my legs. They are wrapped in a sleeve with 32 chambers that inflate and deflate in sequence to push the lymph along. Hoping Medicare will spring for it.
Well, have a GRAND 4th! God bless America, but please
quell the Donalds tweets!

July 03, 2017 - Msg 107783: Hey PH ...I was wondering if everyone in Canada 🇨🇦 gets a stainless steel watch with "150" on it?..lol
(Like Barney did with a "5" on his)....Haha....But it's good to have ya back posting again..

.BTW the people of Cleveland thank you guys for their "Canadian soldier" bugs, it's always a fun time when they fly down to make a mess of everything. But the Lake Erie Perch and Walleye love to eat them tho!...But I guess they call that "The circle of life!"....

Hope Everyone has a safe Fourth of July 🎆 🇺🇸🗽🎇

MDC, yes we had Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla visit Canada during the past week.
As for the beginnings of the beverage Canada Dry, it started out as a way to flavor water. It also was used as an alcohol mixer that helped to dilute strong liquor and make it tingle after you swallowed it thanks to the carbon dioxide it contained. Also, it was during prohibition when Canada Dry became very popular in the USA.
As to why the name "Canada Dry" was chosen, since it was invented in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that explains the "Canada" portion of the name. But I don't know why "Dry" is the second part of the name.

July 03, 2017 - Msg 107786: Good morning All!

MDC - Landlines.....good ol' landlines. Hey...remember the day when they were just called "TELEPHONES!" I am only 48, but sometimes, I think the person who came up with the cell phone should be made to serve out Barney's prison yard chores!

SPOT - Darn it again! I miss Maude's lunches, now I miss your breakfast! I'm missin' out on some good food!

Poor Horatio - Good to see you! Haven't seen you in quite a spell!

Just made an errand run at WalMart early this morning and am getting ready to do some moring chores. Little later, gonna upload a great baseball game to my computer! Hope all has a fantastic day! Sonic drinks are on me, get whatcha want!

July 03, 2017 - Msg 107787: Well, hey there, Poor Horatio. Long time, no see. Thanks for the link to the Dick Van Dyke shows. He is one talented man. I'll enjoy those shows, for sure.

I still have landline phones. I guess they're sort of a hybrid, since the lines don't come from a phone company. My computer is on Spectrum (used to be Time-Warner Cable) and my phone service runs through my computer. It powers my FAX as well. It's all a little complicated, but it works for me. My base phone on my desk has caller ID and a built-in answering machine. I set it to pick up on the second ring, and I don't answer until the caller speaks and I know who it is. All my other phones also have caller ID, and it displays on my TV screens as well, but I'm not always where I can see any of those, so I just listen for the caller to speak. The FAX is set to pick up on the fourth ring, but the answering thing catches it on the second. If I'm expecting a FAX, I just turn the answering machine off until the FAX comes in. Works for me. Yes, I have a cell phone, but it's usually where I'm not, or is discharged. I guess you could say I'm sort of semi-tech.

Well, guess I'll go scare up a little lunch. I missed breakfast too, darn it. I'll bet he had bacon that bent at the waist, too! --Romeena

July 03, 2017 - Msg 107788: BOOM! *sizzle, sizzle* BOOM! POW! BANG! POP,POP,POP,POP

July 03, 2017 - Msg 107790: KEEP ALL FIREWORKS OFF THE PORCH

July 04, 2017 - Msg 107791: Oh oh, Sheriff Tom is on firework patrol! :)
Hope everyone had a good day today. Thanks PH for the Dvd episode. Funny how I remembered that little phrase. Now we get the Beverly Hillbillies on
ME TV and I cant get that opening tune out of my head! ha
BTW, thanks for the REAL info on Canada Dry in place of my FAKE version! ha
We are still at pretty sustained highs of 110 or so, but the
good news is that all our 10 fires are now contained!
POSSUM and BOO, and ASA, and STERLING Stop by and say "hey!"
Prayers,

July 04, 2017 - Msg 107792: Gooood Morning, Porch

Seems Sheriff TOM is a little upset! It's OK...I was way out in the yard, away from the porch! I wanted to make sure no one got hurt and they could see them good!

MDC - Real rainy start to the 4th here. Got a big system sliding into Missouri from Kansas. Supposed to be rainy on and off all day, then real scattered rain and tstorms tonight. I imagine there are a lot of bummed kids right at this particular moment!

Romeena - I'll try to go out in the yard a little farther next year so Toye Starr wont get so scared.

Eat, drink and be merry! For with this day, we celebrate out patriotism! Hey to Boo, Asa, possum, G-F, TOM, SPOT, Maude, Lucy, Sterling and all the others in line to get gas and Goober's cash giveaway envelope!

July 04, 2017 - Msg 107793: HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!! Possum says that the burgers are cookin' over at O'Malley's place!
John, the one night NOT to rain would indeed be this evening!
God bless,
MDC

July 04, 2017 - Msg 107794: Oooo...I'm there! Everyone to O'Malley's!
Don't know about fireworks there?! Them trees are mighty thick 'round there!

John Masters

July 04, 2017 - Msg 107795: Burgers? Yum! Just don't make them too hard. Nothing ruins a good burger like cookin' it too long, until it's like a cracker! I may have to leave a little early, though. Eloise and Jerry are cooking a brisket for the family, tater salad, slaw, everything! Jerry knows his way around a brisket, so I don't want to miss it. The boys, Landry and Hudson, are at camp, so it will just be the old folks, but we'll have fun. Hope everyone has a fun and safe Fourth - Independence Day! Blessings, porch. --Romeena

July 04, 2017 - Msg 107796: Happy Independence Day, y'all! Yep,the burgers are ready,O'Malley's in Detroit and Spot's bringing the celebrating elixir,so we're in for a real swinging bash! I even think Al might be there- who wants to dance with Al?! It's gonna be a fun time for sure!

July 05, 2017 - Msg 107798: Good morning porch, hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July. its back to work for me today.

Daysie had to work but Patrick came and ate with us as well as one of his former college roommates. Patrick took a to go box to Daysie at work so she was a happy camper with that. all in all it was a pretty good day.

very humid today with rain expected much of the day.

better get to work now
Prayers and blessings to all

July 05, 2017 - Msg 107799: No burgers for me. I prefer hot dogs. Speaking of hot dogs, did you hear about the Nathans hot dog eating contest held on July 4th? The female winner ate 41 hot dog in 10 minutes and the male winner ate 72 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

from Poor Horatio

July 05, 2017 - Msg 107800: They are HOW MANY HOT DOGS??? Good grief! A person would have to be nuts to do that. A person's "innards" could probably handle the "dog" part, but all that bread? And they had to be practically swallowing it whole. That's going to pack up in there and just make a big old dough ball. I'll bet they're not feeling too well today. Crazy.

Jerry had done a great job cooking that brisket, it was so tender all you needed was a fork, no knife necessary. And - they sent me home with a doggie bag! Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight??

Well, for now, a light lunch. Very light. I'm still working on that second 15 pounds. I've managed not to re-gain the first 15 I lost while I had pneumonia and no appetite, so now I want to knock off another 15. You can't really see the loss so far, but I can feel it in the way my clothes fit. The next 15 will start to be visible.

Blessings, folks. Get out there and act like somebody! --Romeena
