February 12, 2015 - Msg 100663: Praying for your mom, Maude. It is always nerve-wracking to see your parents go through treatment of something like that at that age, but chances are she will be fine. God bless you for taking good care of her. You're a good daughter.

I don't even want to weigh in on the muslim issue. I cant even think about it right now. Pray!

Worked again tonight and enjoyed it so much. It was busy and I did three admissions and lots of paperwork but the people I work for and with are just great. It really is a good fit so far. The poor facility is in bad shape and no extra money to fix things up. We have to salvage and recycle just about everything just to put together charts. Sad, but since most clients are Medicaid, there just isn't a lot of money coming in.

Ro, the nurse who is training me (the one who looks like willie nelson) is pretty terrific. Tonight I went outside to keep him company while he took a smoke break and he told me about his wife who died recently with Scleraderma. It was such a sad story and I could hear the emotion in his voice..I even saw his eyes tear up. I felt so sorry for him. I have a feeling we will be good friends.

Thanks for the prayers. :)

Love,
Boo

ROMEENA--I wont dwell on this after this comment, but the camel's nose story is my point too, because like you said, if a Christian went to the deacons and confessed a sin
which really turned out to be a crime, they would then tell the civil authorities, and it is then handled in a state court, not a religious court of any kind. So why do the muslims get to deal with it in a special religious court? It should be refered to the state court as well.
If it is NOT about a crime, why does it even have to come up outside the mosque? Why did the iman have to have that special meeting with the public? Just keep it in the mosque, just as the deacon board would keep it in the church if it was not dealing with a crime. THAT is what's so crazy about this whole thing.
Boy, I'd be at that meeting with an aunt bee protest sign,
letters would be going to the editor, congressman, etc.
OK, that's it on that.
Have a pleasant evening all,
MDC

February 12, 2015 - Msg 100665: Good sweep BOO.

February 12, 2015 - Msg 100666: MDC, nothing pertaining to that particular group ever makes sense, when held up to the standard of our Constitution, at least as as it used to be before it has been so blatantly trampled. Incidentally, I don't wish to shock all of you, but when I mention the trampling of the Constitution, I do not lay all of that at Dear Leader's door. Surprise! Betcha never thought I'd say that, did you? Well, I don't. We've all had a hand in that to a greater or lesser degree. Take "politically correct" out of the equation, and the damage to the Constitution shrinks remarkably, and we've all fallen for that KoolAid, to some extent. True, Dear Leader has taken our willingness to bend our laws and the intent of those laws and has run with it, making a shambles of everything, but we have no one but ourselves to blame, at the end of the day.

Boo, you're right. I don't want to think about it right now either, and I imagine everyone else is up to their eyebrows with it. I know I started this, and I'm going to give it a rest now, lest the cancer it represents infect our porch as well. We probably all need a safe place. It really preys on my mind, but I need to stop bringing it to the porch. Just pray, folks, because we really are on a very slippery slope. OK. Tick-a-lock! --Romeena

February 12, 2015 - Msg 100667: Morning Porch. Hope the new day finds you all well and dandy.

Boo, I am so glad you are enjoying the new job. Makes it a lot nicer if you enjoy what you are doing. I have really been blessed in that area. My boss is good as gold to me. He appreciates my 30 years of service, and will ask my advice at times. I have missed a lot of work since the holidays with my back (although I have an abundance of leave time built up) but his only concern has been how I am doing and offering prayers for me to get feeling better.
I'm glad to hear Sean is doing well in school also. Good on him.

Ro, you are so right. We have no one but ourselves to blame for the mess we are in. My biggest concern is have we learned anything? The ultimate in stupidity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results. Our next cycle will offer another "first". How many will vote for that just for that reason as they did the last go around? OK, enough of that. I need my pills.

Asa

February 12, 2015 - Msg 100668: Yep Asa, As they say: "If you do as you always did, you'll get what you've always gotten....So true! Some folks never learn!

Your comment about racing our "Wheelers" got me remembering back when we were kids us building go-carts. What fun! Mine I named "The Liquidator" I thought it was a menacing sounding name...It was a Frankenstein of a lot of things we would find in the trash. It had 2 baby stroller wheels 2 lawn mower wheels a steering wheel from a Falcon and many other "embellishments" that I found. It was fast, probably because I used STP to lube the axle, yep those were the days. It had a "rat fink", STP, and many other racing stickers on it, just like the big boys... If I may add it was painted grey (left over house paint)...haha

Thanks Buddy for the memory blast! Now, go and take your PILLS!...lol

Prayers for Maude's Mom, and any others who are ailing...Boo, by the way did they relearn you how to sweep in your classes? No wait, your a Mom so that is bred into you SORRY...Glad to hear your enjoying your new ADventure in life, Good on Ya!...

Hope all others are Ok, CHILI TOM, Possum, Maude, SPOT, PH, Auh2o, Sterling, all of us East of the Mississippi...Gonna be a COLD weekend... I'm thinkin' PH should rent one of those "party buses", he could pick up Auh2o, Me, (Sterling could come down to my place to get picked up) TOM, Maude, Possum, SPOT, then pick up Romeena & Boo...Asa, may have to catch a Greyhound part of the way, we can pick him up on the way along the side of the road, just as long as he hangs his thumb out there. We could all go to MDC's place now that the Super Bowl & golf folks are gone there should be room for us all in town...Just a thought!...

But hurry with your decision because the temperature here will be close to zero degrees Fahrenheit today and last through our three day holiday weekend (Valentine's Day, Flag Day and Family Day).

February 12, 2015 - Msg 100670: Good sweep Boo lunch will be open face roast beef sandwiches with cream taters...SPOT

February 12, 2015 - Msg 100671: Ooooh, Spot, that open face roast beef sandwich sure sounds good. And cream taters? Yum! If any of that beef is a little rare, I'd love to have it, but if not, well-done is fine, too. I've always felt a little sorry for folks who like their beef well-done. First, because they just don't know what they're missing! Second, because folks who like it well-done usually can't even consider eating it if it's rare, or even a little pink. On the other hand, we like-it-rare folks can still eat it if it's well-done. It will just be a little tougher and won't have quite as much flavor. So put me down for a sammich, however the beef is cooked. Thanks!

That party bus sounds like a great idea. Boy, we could just ramble all over the U.S., and have a great time. You folks up north and northeast get on the bus first, and head south and west to get out of the cold. We'll be watchin' for you! Can I bring Toye Starr? She'll ride in my lap and won't be in the way. I promise she's trustworthy, I'll just bring a supply of her piddle pads.

I treated myself to a new orchid plant yesterday. I figured I'd just get myself a valentine, since my sweetie isn't here to get me one. I'm really enjoying orchids since I discovered how well they flourish in my sunroom. They're just blooming so well. There's one out there that bloomed in the middle of last October, and that cluster of blooms is still there and still beautiful! (Did I already tell you that?) Anyway, you can't beat that.

Well, I guess I need to get busy around here. Take care, friends. See you later. --Romeena

February 14, 2015 - Msg 100687: Happy Valentine's Day to all my porch friends. If you have your sweetheart with you, be thankful, and do something nice for each other. If you don't, well, then be happy for those who do. I enjoy watching my sons as they take their wives out to dinner, buy them flowers and/or candy, and some elaborate card. The girls get their husbands pretty cards, and make a big deal out of whatever the guys are doing for them.

As for me, I don't miss flowers and candy, because that was never Dale's style. He'd usually get me a card, and we'd go out to dinner, but he was never one to do the flowers and candy thing. Anytime I received flowers from him, they were delivered to the hospital, because that's where I'd be - having one of the kids, or a surgery! However, I never felt slighted. I may not have gotten a lot of flowers, but when I needed anything, I got it, and most of the time, that applied to "wants" as well. My car was well-maintained and always had plenty of gas in it. When he passed, I eventually realized the tank was nearing empty, and I didn't even know how to release the fuel door. When the house finally had to be cleaned, I had to search the closets to find where HE kept the vacuum. I hadn't run the thing in years. Finally found it in the furnace closet. I've probably told you all this before, but it seems appropriate to repeat it on this day, when sweethearts are doing kind things for each other. Friends, never let it just be a Valentine's Day thing. Be good to each other every day of the year. Someday, you might be very glad that you did.

I can truly say I'm happy today. I have wonderful memories, of happiness during good times, and loving support during the occasional rough times. I was well and truly loved, and so was he. I may have been only seventeen when I met him, but God put an assurance in my heart that he was the one, and for 38 years, that proved to be true. Giving him up was unbelievably hard, but today, as I look at some of my friends, and see the physical and mental challenges some are facing, I'm grateful. I won't have to see him deteriorate, nor will he have to witness the same in me. Don't misunderstand, if I could have him back, I'd wear myself out to take care of him, if necessary, but that can't happen. As it is, in my mind, he'll always be whole, strong, handsome and healthy. God is good. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

February 15, 2015 - Msg 100692: Good Sabbath porch.

Hope everyone had a nice Valentines day. Ours was wonderful. Very special in fact. Stacey announced that she and Matt are expecting another baby. We are thrilled for them. It will be number 6 for them, and our 8th Grandkid. What a blessing. And I loved how she made the announcement. She took a picture of their crib, with Allison in the crib, and a sign she made that hangs on it in big bold letters "EVICTED" lol It is such a blessing to have them live so close to us.

Very thoughtful post about your Valentine Romeena. Thank you for sharing that. I know you miss him but that you also know you will see him again.

GF, Tom, sorry your weather is so nasty. But spring is on the doorstep. Hang in there. That was a great link G.F. I enjoyed watching that. That wasn't you dressed up like Otis with the pickle on a stick was it? One thing I would love to do would be to find an early 60's Ford and restore it to a Squad car. It probably will never happen, but if the right car could be found I might try it.

Well our duck ponds are not frozen around here. Such a mild winter this year. But if we don't have a wet spring our duck pons might not have any water in them come summer.

Well I think I'll go do some stretching and see if I am up to going to preaching. I have a hard time sitting for very long still. I had to take Debbie to the hospital yesterday for an infusion. That takes about an hour, plus another hour total to drive there and back. Well I was hurting bad by the time we got home. It is getting better, but taking its time doing so.

Prayers for all for a great Sabbath day.

February 15, 2015 - Msg 100694: Good morning, everyone! I'm back from "M-Y"! Had a great time and yes, G- F, the first words outta my mouth when I walked into the Miles' store was "I came back to tell y'all Goober- Fife says HEY!" It's getting to be a running joke and yes, they think I'm a nut! LOL

Then I stopped by Floyd's Barber Shop and spent some time again with Mr.Russell (the original Floyd who used to cut Andy's hair) and his son. Boy,I love that Mr. Russell-he's a sweetheart! And he loves the ladies, even at age 91!

Oh, I even drove to Mt. Pilot, y'all! Pilot Mountain is a tiny town with lots of pretty houses sitting up on the hillsides. Ain't much downtown-a few small shops, a Hardees (fast food chain) and a CVS and that's about it. No wonder the Fun Girls were so wild-they were bored to death over there! LOL

Well,I could go on & on about Mayberry, but I'll save it for another time. Oh no,wait! Ha! I forgot to tell y'all I went to Andy's childhood home too! Folks were occupying it (you can rent it and spend the night there) so I didn't go in. Humble beginnings-tiny little place.

Ro,your post was very sweet-thanks for sharing that.

Good luck with Mrs' Spot's surgery, Spotty.

February 16, 2015 - Msg 100703: Brrrrr! From our high 70s yesterday, we dropped during the night to our present 34°. I'd love to just stay holed up here in the house all day, but I've got to get out briefly, and go put a couple of checks in the bank. I think I'll time it for around lunch time and pick up something yummy for lunch while I'm out. Maybe I'll go by Gold Dragon and get lunch and dinner both. I usually order delivery from them in the evening, but their lunch menu is cheaper and actually provides more food, and if I pick it up I don't have to pay the $2 delivery charge and a tip. Yep, that's the plan. I'll get two bowls of hot and sour soup (one for lunch and one for dinner tonight) and an order of shredded pork with garlic sauce, to reheat for dinner, along with the other soup. I'll eat the spring roll and the chicken wing that comes with the pork, for lunch. Yep, that's what I'm gonna do. Go to the bank, stop by Gold Dragon and get food, come home and settle in for the rest of the day. Toye Starr can go with me, she loves to go in the car.

I was planning to spray roses today. That wretched "Rose Rosette" disease has invaded Irving, and will probably wipe out every rose I've got. It's already killed six. Most websites say there is no cure, but Howard Garrett (the Dirt Doctor) says it can be combated with a mixture of Garrett Juice (a kind of compost tea), orange oil, and 3% hydrogen peroxide. You spray this concoction on the plants to the point of runoff, and supposedly it will save them. I guess we'll see. I'm not going down without a fight. I've got about thirty roses in my yard, about sixteen of them all in one dedicated bed. If I lose the roses, I don't know what on earth I'd put in that bed.

It's cold!! The kind of cold that just sort of creeps into your bones and you can't get warm. I notice this more and more, as I get older. Old bones get cold easier, and stay cold longer, I guess.

Well, guess I'd better go put out some critter feed. They appreciate it on a day like this, poor little things. It's not just cold, it's dark, dreary and drizzly out there, too. --Romeena

I saw auh20 and MDC talking on FB about the horrible weather auh20 is having (-20, you can have it!) and thought I'd check in to make sure all are well. We were expected to have snow, then ice, and it appears to be just rain in the city. After last year's snowmaggedon, I suppose rain is fine, but I'd hoped to see a little snow this year. My home state of Kentucky seems to be getting hammered, however, and I pray they are all okay.

Boo, you have the best heart. I didn't know you'd gone back to work. That's wonderful!
Romeena, what Constitution? That seems to have gone out the window. I love hearing how Dale took care of you. It's so sweet. I am one of the few females that doesn't care to get flowers. I'd rather have my husband do the dishes, which he frequently does.
MDC, love the Barn and Thel quotes.

PH, looks good! Are you in Canada?
Sterling, your squirrels are here. I'm thisclose to finding my son's BB gun and popping him as he keeps taking my birds suet bricks. He has to jump to access them but he does as much as he can. My husband wants me to stop putting the suet out there but I just can't stop as I don't want my birds to leave me.
Ice Tom, you stay warm!
Asa, Congratulations Pappy! I love big families and am glad that you're so close by your grandbabies.
Possum, that's so neat that you went to Mayberry! I've been wanting to make the trek. Maybe in the spring, which will be here before ya know it.
Spot, I hope the Mrs. surgery went well. Hugs!
Big Maude, prayers for your mama.

Valentine's Day was mine and the Mr's 17th wedding anniversary. Honestly, it's by the grace of God that we've been together that long. We've had more things flung at us than most, but we have a love that has endured it all. We went to a nice lunch to a Southern organic restaurant. It was so good. Then we did a little shopping. Nothing big, but it was nice. He endured a Hallmark movie that evening and then we watched Friday Night Lights so he was happy. Then church yesterday. It's awfully quiet around here with just one child living here right now as my stepdaughter is trying out living on her own by staying with a friend until she moves to L.A. next month. Nick is home from Africa and at Ft. Riley. We'll see him in a few weeks and for about a week we will have all 3 children with us for the first time in over a year. Times they are a changing.

I hope everyone has a most blessed day and week ahead. Stay warm!

Wait, I have a plan, maybe PH can hijack the Toronto Bluejays bus to use as our "Party" bus? We may have to do a little work but it would be worth it to get out of Dodge this time of the year....Heck, I'd even sell hot dogs and cracker jacks to earn my keep....Sounds like a plan to me...Who's in?

February 16, 2015 - Msg 100707: Good evening, porch. It's still just 35° here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Looks like it's going to hang in the low 30s all night, then up to about 50° tomorrow afternoon. Not all that cold by northern/northeastern standards, but still feels pretty cold to us. You have to remember, we're not really prepared to deal with the cold. I have no heavy winter coat. I've got a pretty little turquoise windbreaker jacket, and several denim jackets in assorted colors, but if it gets severely cold, I have to revert to an old insulated jacket of Dale's! Not exactly a fashion statement, but then, I've never been a fashionista. Jeans, t-shirts, and roomy "big shirts", that's about it.

Lucy, so good to see you! Sounds like things are going well at your house. Apparently the kids have found or are finding their path, at last. I know you had some turbulent years, but then, most families do. That's the nature of kid-raisin'! Oh, about that suet brick? Do you have one of the wire suet holders? I have one that I put my suet cakes in, and it works pretty well. A suet block usually lasts about a week when I put it in that little cage. I just hang it from the bottom of a feeder. The birds can reach in and peck at it, but the squirrels can't quite get their heads in. I have one that sticks his little paw in and digs a tiny piece out, then I see him sitting around licking his paw. It's so funny!

Oh, good! I just saw my little possum friend, traveling along the power lines out back. He/she came to the tangle of vines that surrounds the lines at one point, and disappeared. Those vines lead to a tree trunk, and from there into the back corner of the yard. That means that by morning, there will be a lot of tiny holes in my yard, and a whole lot fewer grubs in the ground! Yay! That provides a bit of aeration to the soil, and removes some potential pests. Possums are a good thing to have around. Possum UAR, I'll say howdy to your kin if I get a chance.

Well, better move on. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

LUCY--yup, I was telling AUH20 to come on out to AZ. We will continue to be in low 80s this week,

GF--sure come on out to see Cleveland practice BASEBALL! yippie! BTW, the town of Goodyear came about when we had a big Goodyear plant out here,
but it closed many years ago. We also had a GM proving ground for desert conditions, but GM built a new one in Nevada i think.
Now 21 christians! Friends, thank God some nations are fighting back since BO is out playing golf!

February 17, 2015 - Msg 100710: And there are those who will stand up and argue with you, that there is no persecution of Christians these days. Makes you wonder if they live underwater or something. As for other nations fighting back, yes - thank God for that. I think the IS may have gone a bit too far when they so cruelly killed that Jordanian pilot. Jordan has really been hammering them. It's time somebody did.

I don't worry about what anyone will think about me buying hydrogen peroxide. One look at my hair will tell them otherwise! I had a little chuckle to myself last time I got a haircut. There was a dear little old lady in the salon, at least ten years older than I am, who was having her hair and eyebrows dyed. She looked at my gray hair and whispered to me "Dear, you should let Cheryl dye your hair for you. It would take ten years off your appearance." I just smiled and thanked her. When Cheryl washed her dye out and finished her up, I saw her as she left. It was enough to scare small children. Pale, wrinkled little face, marked by those fierce jet-black eyebrows and crowned by a helmet of tight, stiff, sooty-black curls that looked like the color would rub off. A slash of heavy crimson lipstick didn't help much, either. She smiled at me and pointed to her hair, and nodded, like "see what you could do?" I just smiled back. Later I mentioned her to Cheryl, who asked me not to hold her responsible for the woman's appearance. She said she has tried for several years to get her to soften her hair color and ditch the scary eyebrows, but she demands the whole jet-black thing. Funny thing, her natural color wasn't black, it was light brown, so she has the lighter skin tones, which makes the black even more astonishing. Also, Cheryl said her hair is a pretty silver color and would be so nice if left alone, but the woman won't hear of it. Poor little thing. My mom dyed her hair right up until she passed, but at least she used a soft, very light brown color that was becoming, and used soft pastel makeup. She always looked so pretty.

Well, guess I'll turn in. It's very late, and Toye Starr and I will probably sleep until mid-morning, but who cares? I was a slave to a clock for many years, and now, I just suit myself. Feels pretty good! Blessings, friends! --Romeena

PH--I would listen to top 40 on my 6 transistor radio hanging from the handlebars of my bike as I would deliver afternoon papers. When certain songs
came on like "It's My Party", My Boyfriend's Back", etc I would sing along like crazy as I pedaled along . May she rest in peace. Another fav of mine was Kathy Young.
Here is her "1000 Stars" song.

February 19, 2015 - Msg 100724: Possum needs some hot volcanic rocks-it's DANG cold here in SC!!

I ain't a happy possum today,by any means! Walked out to the mailbox and thought I was at the North Pole! Brr..

According to CNN.com, 115 million people are in the cold and "shouting epithets"-ha! Yep, I've had a few choice words fly outta my mouth already today and with tonight's low down to about 17 degrees,I ain't gonna lie- there will probably be a few more!

Well, as Calvin Coolidge (or somebody said), can't nobody do nothin' about the weather,so best just suck it up and deal with it best we can.

Hope everybody is staying as warm as possible-y'all take care!

February 19, 2015 - Msg 100726: No complaints or choice words coming from me. It's 47° and rising here on my porch. Clear skies, bright sun, very light breeze so wind chill is not a factor. My SIL in Michigan sent me a picture taken from their back deck, toward the fence and the woods behind their house. It was mostly white, with a hint of a dark line, which was the top rail of the fence. The text only said "We're having a blizzard." I believe it. It was pretty much a white-out. Scary.

In the vastness of this planet, it's hard to imagine that such a relatively short distance can bring such dramatic differences in weather. It's only about a thousand miles of driving, and I'm sure is less than that in terms of latitude. There's such a big difference, though. We used to go to Michigan about once a year, for Dale to see his family, and it was an interesting trip. I remember one year as we left San Antonio, the corn in the fields we passed was tasseled and nearly ready to pick. As we drove farther north, the tassels disappeared and the ears got smaller, finally there were no ears at all, just the stalks, and by the time we got to Michigan, the corn stalks were only about knee high.

I'm hoping for an extension of this warm weather, enough to bring out the cottonwood beads on my three female trees. Then as those little beads are forming, I hope for a good hard freeze to kill them off. That happened last year, there was no cotton from the trees at all, and I didn't have to pay the tree man to come and prune all that stuff out of the trees. It's expensive, but it's necessary. Three large trees can make an unbelievable mess, with drifts of cotton a foot deep everywhere. It's awful. So - I pay to have the beads pruned out. They would eventually swell and burst open, scattering cotton everywhere and making my neighbors hate me. Sure is nice when nature takes care of it for me.

Speaking of nature, my friend who lives in central Irving, just across the creek from the hospital property and about a quarter mile from the major highway through town - took a picture of a big beautiful gray fox in her back yard a few days ago! Who would have thought? Possums and raccoons, yes, but a fox? Yet there he was. I did a little investigating, and learned that the creek/drainage ditch actually runs from the north end of town through to the south end, and is frequently used as a thoroughfare by wildlife. It's part creek bed, part concrete-lined drainage ditch, with the concrete part stopping and starting at intervals along the way. I think that's so interesting that the animals have learned to follow it and remain in relative safety. Nature, and life, will always find a way. Wonderful.

Well, I'm off to get a few things done around here. Have a great day, friends. --Romeena
