September 08, 2013 - Msg 94684: Yep Sgt. TOM, Same story just a New Year....

Romeena..."The REVENGE of the Squirrels".... Yesterday I ran off a half dozen of them, they were eating my sunflowers in my back garden. I had planted 6 of the 12' tall "Russian Giants" variety they are just at the point where I needed to dry them for bird seed. They were NOT happy campers, they just started to chomp at them when I run'd them off!
Well today they got their R-E-V-E-N-G-E they destroyed my pretty garden ones I planted along the front yard fence and tore up some of my potted flowers too! I think the one who shook his fist at me yesterday was the gang leader,(he must have been from somewhere's else) I think they bused him in like they do with the political protesters. I shoulda had Sgt. TOM on guard duty and it wouldn't have happened...(he would have had them cleaning up all the mess they made).
Ya try and Ya try and whatta ya get?? HEARTACHS!

G-F...

September 08, 2013 - Msg 94685: Oh, G-F, I feel your pain. There are about six of the little darlings that hang out in my yard, sometimes more, but six or so that seem to be permanent residents. They are destructive, for sure, they dig in my flower pots, they plant pecans everywhere, which are very difficult to pull up - usually have to dig them out. They raid the bird feeders, they chewed up a chaise-lounge cushion, and if I allowed even a tiny opening to appear in a soffit board, they'd be in the attic. However, my friend Ted walks the perimeter of the house pretty often, and repairs any loose place he sees, and he put heavy-gauge wire over the chimney top. So, they can't get in the attic, or the chimney. They're pesky, no question about it, but I just love them. Nest boxes, critter feed, water sources - these things don't do much to discourage them, I'm afraid. By the way, they do love watermelon! I put the rinds out, and in no time, they have all the remaining pink eaten, and the white as well, leaving just the leathery green rind. I just kick that off the feeding stones into the grass, and Eddie mows it. The stories I could tell, of the antics of the squirrels out back. They're worth all the aggravation.

Well, guess I'd better go pack. David will be here at 10:00 in the morning to take me to the airport. Flight is at 11:35, but it's out of Love Field, much easier and faster than D/FW. I'll be gone until Thursday, will get in at 3:55 on Thursday. Even though this is a funeral trip, I'm looking forward to it. I'll be seeing in-laws I haven't seen in a long time. Dale's two brothers, for starters. Fine men, really good guys.

Blessings! --Romeena

September 08, 2013 - Msg 94686: There are some fishy smells coming from the NASCAR Richmond race today....

September 08, 2013 - Msg 94687: Well Ro, when I was praying that the Lord would make it possible for you to retire, I didn't expect it to work out this way but I'm glad you are able to go have fun with Eloise. What neat trip that is going to be!! Take lots of pics so you can show them too me if I am able to come up in October.

We had a good trip to the Frio but, as you mentioned Ro, the river was low. I was sad to see that River Bend was not well cared for. The owners have really let things go and its sad. The swimming hole was fun, even though it was pretty low. We still enjoyed it and we were there with friends (2 other homeschooling families). We did pay to spend the day at Garner one day because Bruce, Sean, and his friend Josh were dissapointed with the water level at River Bend. The swimming at Garner was wonderful!! We really enjoyed it. I had not been to Garner since I was a kid and it is just beautifu, very well-maintained and I think we will go to Garner next year. :) Interestingly, while swimming at River Bend, Erin got a leech on her!! Yikes, can you imagine. It was stuck on tight, too. It took her some pulling to get it unstuck. It freaked her out a little, but not much. I asked Bruce if he thought it might make her sick because some parasites carry diseases. He said, "Well, it didn't make Humphrey Bogart sick in African Queen!"...oh, brother.

We didn't make ice cream but I cooked something at the end of each day. I was so tired by then! I am glad to be home and able to sleep in my own bed. I am working on the laundry right now...plenty of wet things and towels!

Boo--glad you had a good trip. Sounds like it was a fun family outing. How did it work out with the other families? We've tried that in the past and the other families had many "issues," so never did it again.
RO- have a good trip.
Hope all had a good Sabbath. It RAINED a good part of the day and the high was only 89! Very nice.
G-F- sounds like you need to enlist the help of the "Caddyshack" fellows! ha
TOM- we may have to put a thinkin bucket on GF's head. lol
Prayers for all,
MDC

September 09, 2013 - Msg 94690: Well, that's an interesting question, MDC, and yes there were some minor issues with one of the other families. The mom is a very insecure woman, and seems to have some control issues. She is also a non-stop talker. It made me uncomfortable at times but she is a member of our church and I care about her. She has not said so, but i sense that she may have a history of child abuse. She reminds me very much of a fried I had who was badly abused as a child. Anyway, I think it might be best in the future to avoid further camping trips with her. The other family that came was new to me but I did enjoy the time i spent with them. They are a mormon family and I would have loved to have been able to spend more time talking with them but it just didn't work out. Both of the other families had younger children that had to be cared for. After thinking about it, I believe I prefer just going camping with my own family. When my best friend Karen was still living, we were camping buddies and I don't think there were ever two friends who were as campatible as she and I. I don't know that I will ever find that in a friend again. My sister and I always have a great time together but because my mom needs so much care, one of us always has to be with mom, which keeps us from taking trips together. I really miss that.

Well, I have been putting anti-itch cream on a rash I seem to have gotten on my hands and legs...not sure if it was something from the river or the weeds I trudged through. I took some ben@dryl so maybe I can sleep.

PS, MDC, it rained here today, too. I drove through somer really hard rain on the interstate on the way home. I haven't seen it rain like that in years. Hope we get more of it!

Boo

September 09, 2013 - Msg 94691: Hey, Boo, welcome home! I'm glad you found some good swimming at Garner, and sorry River Bend is going to seed. That's too bad. When the other family had it, they kept things nice. Well, I guess things just change, don't they? As for the leech on Erin - yuck! I think some salt thrown on it would have made it turn loose. Never tried it, but I've heard it works.

As for camping with other families, we used to do it, and it worked pretty well, but the others were church families we had known a long time, and spent a lot of time with, so we knew we were compatible. We did have one little issue, due to a little "princess" in one family, but David just teased her so unmercifully that she toughened up in self-defense and it all worked out. That kid had (and still has) a talent for teasing, but does it so gently that you can't take offense. He de-fuses tense situations with that method now and then.

Eloise and I travel well together. We're both pretty adjustable, and don't sweat the small stuff, so we do just fine. Two weeks in the wilds of Mongolia - twice - and we're still friends. Also, five cruises in those hobbit-sized cabins and we're still friends. That pretty well says it all.

Thanks for the good wishes, Sgt. Tom. I'll be careful. Actually, I expect to enjoy this trip, even though it is for a funeral. My MIL was almost 96, this was no shock to anyone, was probably a relief to her, and I'll get to see folks I haven't seen in a long time. Things have a way of working out. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

September 09, 2013 - Msg 94692: oops...I just lost a long post because I accidentally pressed the control button with the part of my hand! darn it, I don't even remember what I wrote, it just went away in an instant..

Thanks for the welcome home, Ro. It is sad about River Bend but I heard that it is one of the last camps that allows alcohol so they get all types there. We had a few problems with people drinking there and using some really terrible language around the kids. There were some young women flashing themselves for pictures, too, but at least their backs were to us. Sad to think about how things used to be compared to now. I wish I owned the place and had the resources to restore it all.

Well, better get the laundry finished and get Erin going on some schoolwork. Vacay is over. :(

Wow, I just looked in the archive under Sept 11, 2001. Many great posts from porchsters past...Homemaker. Mavis, Frankie Flint, Mrs Wiley, etc, and porchsters present Tom and Asa.
May we never forget, and may it always be our battle cry, just as Remember Pearl Harbor was for our parents. This country has been thru a lot since that day we were attacked; and quite frankly, I worry about her; but I also believe in the verse that RO mentions a lot here "If my people..." Lord be with us in these days just as you were with us in 1776. Thank you, and God bless America. And thank you Andy and Barn for the many moral lessons you taught us all.

Just checking in...been very busy and have not had time to rock but have been reading the post...prayers for RO to have a safe trip and prayers for MDC, GF and ASA with Sgt Bulldog TOM on patrol...LOL

Great post MDC remembering this day in our country's history...with so much happening inside and outside our country today I thought the following quotes about 9/11/2001 might help us as we look forward...

"Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children.” - President George W. Bush

“Remember the hours after September 11th when we came together as one to answer the attack against our homeland. We drew strength when our firefighters ran upstairs and risked their lives so that others might live; when rescuers rushed into smoke and fire at the Pentagon; when the men and women of Flight 93 sacrificed themselves to save our nation’s Capitol; when flags were hanging from front porches all across America, and strangers became friends. It was the worst day we have ever seen, but it brought out the best in all of us.” –Sen. John Kerry

Andy Taylor: [telling Opie and his friends the story of Paul Revere] And he said, "The British is comin, the British is comin! Git your guns, we gonna have us a revolution!"

God Bless America...again...please....

September 13, 2013 - Msg 94718: Good evening, porch! Got home safely this afternoon, Toye Starr was pretty glad to see her mom, and I was pretty glad to see her, too! Sweet little old thing! I sure did miss that baby.

I suppose one doesn't say they "enjoyed" going to a funeral, but I truly did enjoy the visit. My MIL was almost 96, had lived long and well. She worked hard, life wasn't always easy, but my SIL had taken excellent care of her, took her many places and saw to it that she had some fun. She even took her on a cruise when MIL was in a wheelchair! The last few weeks, she was very ill, quite miserable, and now that is over for her and she's with the Lord. Truthfully, I cannot grieve.

During the visit, I got to see members of Dale's family whom I hadn't seen in many years, and that was a joy. Fine young adults who were small children when I last saw them, and older adults who were still young in my mind - their gray hair was a surprise! I even met a few people whom I had not met before. It was interesting, to say the least. My SIL is a warm and loving person, makes everyone welcome, treated me like royalty, and her husband worked tirelessly the whole time to be sure everyone was comfortable and well-fed. He scowls a lot and tries to convince people he's a curmudgeon, but he has never fooled me, and we get along very well. He's a sweet old marshmallow, just a little gruff. I'm very glad I went. Still, it's wonderful to be home!

So wonderful, in fact, that I'm going to go get in my own bed, with my baby puppy beside me, and probably sleep like a rock! Joe and Jorge are coming in the morning, so I'd better get to bed. Blessings, everyone, and thanks for the thoughts and prayers while I was gone. --Romeena

I'm just sayin'....

Romeena...Glad you had a good visit considering the circumstances. I was a good boy while you were gone, I even got a "Moon Pie" and bottle of "Huckelberry Smash" from Sgt. TOM for being GOOD!

Asa, Got your filters ordered for the heating season yet? I put part of my order in, the odd ball sizes that I have to special order. Sorta crazy sounding since we have had temps in the 90's this week, but O'l Goobs gonna be ready when Old Man Winter comes. Kinda makes me sad....Right TOM? Well at least I don't live in Colorado where they are getting the floods or in the woods of California where the fires are...

G-F....

September 13, 2013 - Msg 94721: Hey G-F. Yea buddy, same thing here. Getting all geared for the cold months. Busy as can be. You ever work with co-ray-vac heaters? Gotta slug of them in our shops. Then pulenty of rooftop units and gas fired make up air units. Almost 200 block heater reels that our fleet of diesels plug into every night that I have to have ready. And bunches and bunches of pole lights I'm re-ballasting before it gets real nasty.

Glad you're home safe Ro, and that the trip was a nice one, everything considered.

Hey Boo, glad your studies are going well. Sure hope you can find time to rock though. We miss you when you're not here. Same goes for all you folks who don't drop by. Too many empty rockers around here.

Yes MDC, we have been getting that rain in bunches. More down south though. It has cooled nicely though.

Well my peaches are ready to be picked this weekend. I took Andys advice and waited till they was fuzzed up good. Tried one last night. Mercy sakes, talk about curl toeing good. Mighty fine eatin I tell ya.

Prayers for all for a good and safe day.

September 13, 2013 - Msg 94722: Good morning, folks! Cloudy and 80° here today. Hope it stays at that. Joe and Jorge are here to work on the back yard. I can't believe how fast everything grows out there, and how quickly it gets completely out of control. There are eleagnus canes waving six feet above the trim line, weeds two feet tall in some places, and lots of work needed. Gotta run - see you later! --Romeena

September 13, 2013 - Msg 94723: Thanks, Asa...I will be stopping by everyday, I'm sure. :) Wow...I envy those peaches, Asa! Sometimes it is really hard to find a good peach around here. If I wanted to drive all the way to Fredricksburg (about 3 hours), I could find some.

We have been having rain off and on for days, which is wonderful. Things look so nice and green and not even alot of mosquitoes...yet. There is a tropical storm in the gulf that will probably bring us even more rain over the next several days, and I'll take it!

Glad to see you back in your rocker, Romeena! I am also glad you had a good trip and spent time with Dale's family.

I can't wait for the first real cool front of the season!...we are talking about hurricanes down here, though...odd. :(

Boo

September 13, 2013 - Msg 94724: Yep Asa, we have some co-ray-vac's mostly in our wearhouse. They have been good as long as ya don't get your head to close to 'em!

As for peaches Asa I'm more of a nectarine guy I don't like the fuzz...it's just me!

Hey Asa maybe WE should be RE-tireing instead of RE-ballasting sounds a lot easier on the body to me...

September 14, 2013 - Msg 94732: Hi, porch. Just got home. After dinner, we went over to Brittney's sister's house for birthday cake, and I had a wonderful time. Terri got two little rabbits a while back, both males. Uh-huh. One of those "males" produced eight little bunnies about ten days ago. Well, at least now they know which one is really a male, so they can have the problem fixed, if you'll pardon the pun. Meanwhile, those eight little bunnies have become the cutest little things you ever saw. One has opened its eyes, the others are just showing little slits here and there. They love to get in your lap, or up on your chest, and just get in a little warm pile and sleep. Sweetest little things you can imagine. At one point, I had all eight piled up on my chest, asleep. Their little ears are still fairly short, and lay flat along their necks. Their back paws look ridiculously large, and if you touch the bottom of one of those feet, they will spread their toes way out. Hilarious! They've found homes for four of them already. I'd really love to have one, but reason trumped emotion, and I didn't reserve one. About the last thing I need around here is a rabbit. These aren't little rabbits, either. The parents are Flemish Giants, so these tiny, precious little bunnies are going to grow up into big honkin' rabbits, three times the size of Toye Starr, and able to kick the stuffin' out of her. Nope, no bunnies needed here. Sure are cute right now, though.

Well, I'm very tired, and I'm going to bed. Blessings, all. --Romeena

September 15, 2013 - Msg 94733: RO- good thing those bunnies didn't eat rich sauce,
as THAT can really lay heavy on the chest! ha
POSSUM, Wife and I ate at Cracker Barrel tonight!
I got the french toast and hashbrown casserole. Good eatin'. Workers now have fancy embroidered names on the aprons. The cats!
Good Sabbath to all.

Sounds like a fun time, Ro! I love bunnies. :) We saw a couple of huge Jack Rabbits at Garner last week. Funny-looking critters with those big ears. We also had a big skunk come through our campsite while we were all outside sitting in lawnchairs one evening. SKEERED me pretty good! I just knew I was going to get blasted but i guess he was used to people and never sprayed us. Whew!

Gotta get ready for preachin'...

Also, one of our good friends (Kenny) who is a pastor (he married Bruce and I), has a large brain tumor and is going to need surgery very soon. don't know yet if it is cancer. Thanks...

September 16, 2013 - Msg 94742: Good morning, porch! I've already been out and about, got my hair cut, went to the bank, and am waiting for Joe to arrive. He's at one of the rent houses, fixing a sprinkler line, and will come here afterward. We'll probably have a Sonic burger, then he'll start working on the yard, while I go to the eye doctor - routine exam. I have to do it every year because of my diabetes. So far, my eyes are great, no retinopathy at all. On top of that, after cataract surgery and lens implants, I have 20/20 vision, which I never had before in my life! How about that?

Now I hear that some idiot or idiots shot up the Washington Navy Yard, killing several people and wounding a bunch more. What on earth gets into some people? The devil, I think. That miserable Nidal Hasan, who shot all those soldiers at Ft. Hood, thought he was "protecting" his Muslim brothers because the group he shot was about to deploy to Afghanistan. Now, we've got to support his sorry hide for the next umpteen years, until he finally gets to go to Allah and claim his 72 virgins - his reward for carrying out a jihad. Poor fool, he's in for a shock, when the day comes. Oh well. He made his choice.

Hey, MDC. How nice that your sister is coming to visit. I'm sure you'll both enjoy that time together.

Well, guess I'd better run. If Joe doesn't get here soon, he's going to be on his own for lunch, as I have to leave here by 12:40. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

I thought it was pretty rotten what Art Modell did to the city of Cleveland. I remember the Browns teams of the 80s. Brian Snipe was a pretty good q.b. And old Sam Ratigiano was a good coach. And then Marty Schotenhiemer was a good coach. He just always fell apart in the playoffs. Is Sam still with us?

September 17, 2013 - Msg 94751: Hi everyone ! Just letting you know that Miracle Salve Company will be at Mayberry Mall during the Autumn Leaves Festival in Mt Airy NC on October 11,12 & 13. Skippy & I hope to see you there! Daphne http://miraclesalvecompany.com

September 17, 2013 - Msg 94752: Good afternoon, porch! Just trying to get rounded up and things packed, house tidied before Deanna comes to stay with Toye Starr, and all the little details handled that must be done before I leave. I have to be up at 4:30 in the morning - that's a bit early for me, but we have to be at the church by six.

Poor little Starr, she's going to be a very unhappy puppy when Deanna comes in tomorrow evening, instead of me. She knows Deanna, and likes her, but she's not mama.

Would you believe, a flock of robins descended on my beautiful American Beautyberry this morning, and they have just about stripped all the berries from it? They eat them. I knew they did, that's one reason why I planted the thing, aside from it being so pretty, but I didn't expect those tacky birds to just strip it bare, especially so early in the season. I thought it would have berries into the fall, but guess not. Oh well. Maybe I need to plant another one elsewhere in the yard, to divide their efforts.

Mr. Lizard just went streaking past the window. He's the prettiest, sleekest little thing, and I have witnessed firsthand when he's snagged a bug. He's helpful, and I'm glad he's here. I have several lizards. This one is greenish brown, about six inches long, and very smooth. There's a big tree lizard that hangs out on the big cottonwood in the wayback. He's at least a foot long, shades of gray, rough scaly skin, and when he sits still on a tree, you have to know he's there to see him. I love nature!

Well, guess I'll go get my suitcase packed. I've got a couple of friends who have been packed for two days, Eloise packed last night, and now here I am, just about to start. Doesn't take me long, though. I pack light. The dress code on that riverboat is very, very casual, so I'm wearing some jeans and taking another pair, plus a pair of knee-length jeans, about eight colored t-shirts and two or three cotton overshirts, and a light jacket, personal items, a nightgown and two pair of shoes. Done. I can get that all in one suitcase, and will carry my insulin and glucometer in my purse. That's all I'll need. Oh, and some dangly earrings.

Well, off I go. Better get busy. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Have a great trip, Ro. :)

I have a crummy cold. :( Had a full day today..saw the neurologist about the numbness in my leg and not much to do about it. No damage being done so I can live with it. Spent the rest of the day with the girl I am mentoring and we had a nice time. She is a sweetheart.

Well, the Ny-quil should be kicking in soon so I will head for the ironing board. See ya all later..

September 18, 2013 - Msg 94761: Morning all.

Well it would seem Fall has arrived on my porch. Had a cool front move in last night. Yestarday our high was pushing 90. Today they say the high will be 68. Just about right if there ain't any breeze. Sorry Boo. Don't mean to rub it in, but in a few months when I'm freezing my you know what offl, and y'all be basking in 60 degree weather, you can get even. :)

Boo, yer legs going numb? Maybe it's going to sleep. Maybe yer garters to tight. Just a thought. :)

Hope you have a safe and sane trip Ro. And remember who you are and what you stand for.

Uh-oh G-F, Does this mean the Sarge is in charge again? Guess we best act like something. I never wanna see the Rock again! (psst, G-F, the fun girls will be in town this afternoon)

Good to see you P.H. Hope you are well.

I imagine there is a way to turn that auto correct feature off on my Kindle MDC, but I'll be danged if I know how. These new contraptions are a marvel if you know how to use em I reckon. But it seems just about the time I get one half way figured out, they go and make a new one and I gotta start all over again. Makes my haid hurt!

Well better get moving. This morning is a good reminder that old man winter waits for no heating technician. Can I gat an amen on that G-F?

Asa

September 18, 2013 - Msg 94762: Morning porch! hope everyone is up and ready to go today. I haven't been by for a few days, been distracted by "one thing and then another". I probably wouldn't make a good salesman because I am not pushy. kinda like ole Bert.

Anyway, we are enjoying some lovely weather in Northeast TN. cool mornings, warm but not too warm afternoons and cool evenings.temperature was 55 this morning and this sun was just starting to warm things up a bit. Fall has certainly arrived on my end if the porch!

BOO: I have had a cold as well. seems like that has been making the rounds. Lots of folks have had a stomach bug as well. Hope you feel better soon.

They are really encouraging flu shots around here.
Mr. Maude says we have to get them. Guess we will but I plan to wait until the end of September. He works for CVS and has to give shots to customers so guess I will be a customer and get mine too.

Lets meet at Sonic for lunch. We can all sit outside at the picnic tables.

everyone have a blessed day.
Big Maude

September 18, 2013 - Msg 94763: Yep, Asa...the doctor told me I should "loosen something"..not in those exact words, but he said wearing tight jeans would make it worse. My response, "No, I don't wear jeans. I wear comfortable clothes that are appropriate for my size"...I noticed a little grin on his face when i said that.

Well, I'm not terrible jealous of the cool weather Asa and Maude are having. I hope they are enjoying it. The rain and cloud cover have kept the temps down around here for several days (into the 80's), but the humidity is very high. I can deal with it, though...the mosquitos are starting to swarm, unfortunately.

Hope you feel better Maude. I am feeling worse today but not terrible.
