March 31, 2010 - Msg 78463: Thanks for the tip, Ro. Luckily, we don't even have one mesquite tree on the place, all just Live Oak. The donkey is looking good...I would say she is happy here and she seems to like hanging out with the pups. :-) She had been turning her nose up a bit at the feed but today I mixed in a little dog food and she ate it up...then she barked (kidding). Funny old thing.

Ro, I will certainly be praying for your creatinine. Concerning but I know God is in control.

I saw my doc today about the head pain I have been having and she thinks it has to do with my sinuses. Neuro checks were fine and all and the pain seems to be diminishing so she told me to wait it out for awhile. She also repeated the H&H...don't know how that came out yet.

Better go get some chores done.

By the way....here's my April Fool's Day joke on my 12 year old Opie....I packed his lunch with Elmer's Glue, a tape measure, a dog magnet from my fridge, a coaster from my table, and a candle. (I am bringing his real lunch to spring on him after he sees the fake one!)

Have a great Mayberry Day!

Mary Wiggins

April 01, 2010 - Msg 78475: Well, look what the first day of April brought us! Mary Wiggins, how in the world are you, girl? We have missed you!! What has been happening in your world? Gosh, it's good to hear from you. Sounds like you're still enjoying life and having fun - playing a trick on your Opie. Please don't let this just be a drive-by, just move on back to Mayberry, girl!

There are so many "missing persons" these days. I wish we'd hear from Merriweather, too. She was always fun.

Well, gotta get moving. I guess I'll have to get dressed today. The man is coming from Broadview Security (formerly Brinks) to check out my smoke and heat detectors. Yesterday, as I was curled up in my chair under a blanket, a pillow and Toye Starr, the alarm started sounding. Scared me, of course. I knew it was the smoke/heat alarm, because it sounds different from the intrusion alarm. By the time I got untangled and out of my chair, Broadview was calling, to tell me a firetruck was on the way. I barely had time to get a robe on when they pulled up out front. The firehouse is only two blocks away. Four very nice young men came in and checked things out, one went into the attic since there are detectors up there too, but they found nothing. They said it's not unusual, a bit of dust or a busy little spider can set them off. They said to call the alarm company and they'll come clean them. Sure enough, since I do have the service policy, they said they'd be happy to do so. Only problem is, they will be here between noon and five, so I can't leave. I need to go to the grocery store, but I guess not today. Eloise is busy anyway, tomorrow will work better for her.

Spot, how goes it with the new choppers? I'll bet you feel a lot better. They may take a bit of getting used to, but my friend John (Joe's brother) had no trouble at all with his, and is very happy with them. I hope yours go as well.

REV, good luck at the dentist. Those fillings just don't last forever, do they? I've got a mouthful of fillings and inlays and crowns, and many of them are at least thirty years old, maybe older. We have replaced two crowns, removed the gold and used porcelain. (Yes, he gave me my gold, I didn't even have to ask!) I think I like the porcelain better. They don't conduct cold, so I can eat ice cream without those occasional sudden twinges.

Well, better get busy. See you folks later. --Romeena

Did the fire truck bring out the neighbors?
For any of you who may still be pondering the census, I only filled out the number of people and put in a letter stating thAT according to article 1, section 2, clause 3 of the US Constitution, that is all they need.

April 01, 2010 - Msg 78477: Hello everyone...didn't feel like chatting this morning...just tired but I grabbed a nap and here I am. I have to go pick up pup#2 from the vet. I called yesterday to ask how she was and I got: "I think she's fine; she just chewed through her IV line and is eating today. You can pick her up tomorrow." Glad she is ok and we are past the Parvo experience. Hank has been doing great but he sure is skinny from the ordeal. Won't take long to fatten him up, though. I have been hand-feeding him leftover chicken.

My mother-in-law came over yesterday evening to meet the donkey (whose name is Thelma Lou, by the way) and we sat on the back porch. In about 2 seconds, here came Thelma Lou...up on the porch and stood with her face about 2 inches from mine and her back end right in MIL's face...(good donkey). We finally went inside to finish our conversation. Bruce said he is going to start the cross fence this weekend to keep her out by the barn but I feel sorry for her and will have to get her a companion right away. Not sure what...probably some goats. I figure if I get some goats, Homemaker can help answer my questions on goat care. :-) I think I will try to find some pygmy goats but don't know the first thing about how to buy them.

Glad you are having some nice weather, AUh2o. It is really nice and warm here today.

MDC, your unique way of dealing with the census form reminded me about my own method. I never fill out the form to send it in. April 01, 2010 - Msg 78481: Good evening, porch! Well, I finally spoke with my doctor's office staff, and got the results of the lab and x-ray done on Tuesday. X-ray says advanced degenerative disc disease from L3 through S1. No surprise there. Treatment, probably just rest and try to wear it out. Then the serum creatinine came back as 2.5. Still high, but down from the 2.9 of last week. I like that downward trend. We'll draw it again next week, I'm sure. Meantime, I have a theory about what caused it, and it's not the Advil. We'll see. Main thing is, it's headed in the right direction.

Boo, I love that the donkey's name is now Thelma Lou. I thought Naomi was very cute, but Ol' Thel is just perfect. I'm so glad you have her. April 01, 2010 - Msg 78488: We had a donkey when I was growing up. I don't remember too much about it, but I do remember one incident. We lived on a farm in Chino Valley, and my Aunts and Uncles from Phoenix would send their kids (my cousins) out to spend a couple weeks with us each summer. So they could experience farm life, I guess... My sister and I always thought they were pretty whimpy and were actually a little resentful because during the time they visited us, seemed like we still had to do our usual work (weeding, taking care of the vegetables, etc) and it seemed like they got away with everything (instead of being made to help us) These are my childhood memories, probably greatly exagerated thru the years, I'll admit... Anyway, on one particular time, which happened to be the very day after my cousin took credit for pulling a huge weed, (which I had struggled with for 30 minutes and finally loosened, and she happened to walk by when I was catching my breath and pulled the thing out of the ground, and then bragged to my parents about being the one who conquered it...) Oh, back to my story. I was resentful of her after the weed incident, and the next day we were at our vegetable stand (we sold our veggies at a roadside stand) and our donkey wandered over to where we were. Cousin says "oh, how cute" and pats him on the head. Well evidently, he must have had a grudge against her too because he bit her, right on the shoulder. It didn't bleed or anything, I think it just pinched the skin, but boy did I have to try to not laugh. I was thinking, "City-Cuz, now you know better than to stick your arm up in front of the face of a donkey, that doesn't know you." (I know, not very charitable of me, but never-the-less, it seemed to be how I felt at the time...)
Enjoy your donkey, Boo. But remember, Donkey's are moody.
Boy, PH, I would have never thought of your method regarding the census bureau. Here in Idaho, our state is in such financial woes; with state workers being laid off all the time, I never would have dreamed of having the government spend money when it didn't actually need to... (because I could just send in the form like they want us to). So I guess they're spending money in one place, while running short in another. Interesting stategy.

- Hazel

April 02, 2010 - Msg 78489: You know, HM, I knew that about Pygmies but had forgotten about them being escape artists...I might rethink that because I once knew a Pygmy goat named Houdini that could escape from any fence it was put into. No kidding. That would be great to get a bred Nanny...it would be so much fun to have new babies! i am going to look into that. I think Bruce has a cousin near here with a goat farm that might sell us one...I am thinking they are Boer goats like your's.

Take care, New Neighbor...prayers for a speedy recovery. Wish I could send you some chicken soup.

Ro, so happy to hear that the creatinine is on a downward trend. My first thought was the Advil but sounds like you have another theory...maybe you will share it. :-) Yes, Ro, I think Thelma Lou would get in my lap if I let her. I caught her running around in the back today...just running in a circle. I thought she was too old for that but I guess not.

I know, MDC, I have been a very bad girl. If I knew how to email the pictures to Ro, I would do it but I need Bruce to show me how to because i forgot a long time ago. I will try to this weekend if both of us can stop long enough to do it. A friend is supposed to be bringing Bruce a post hole digger for the tractor this weekend so he can start the fence so he will be busy.

Well, I want to go to bed but I have that feeling in my legs that we call "dancing legs" in my family. Its that feeling you get in your legs when they just feel like they won't relax so you can fall asleep. I hate it...I guess its that "Restless Leg Snydrome" that you hear about on TV commercials. The heating pad seems to help when i get it (it's rare). I forgot to tell you all about something funny I saw in the doc's office yesterday. There was a poster and a brochure about a new med to treat a condition called (name i can't remember) which is thin eyelashes. Can you believe it? The drug companies have given thin eyelashes a name and come up with a drug to make them grow thicker. Brooke Sheilds is the spokesperson for the new med. How ridiculous. I know a cheaper solution...it's called mascarra...

Well, I think I will go to bed with the heating pad.

April 02, 2010 - Msg 78494: Good afternoon, porch! I'm pooped! Eloise picked me up and drove me around - had to go to the bank, got my hair cut (I couldn't even see out anymore) and did some grocery shopping. Then we went and had a little lunch at Souper Salad, and now home. I've still got the groceries to put away, but the cold stuff is already secured, and the rest will get put away when I feel like it. I don't know what I'd do without Eloise.

I envy you girls and your goats and donkeys. I hope the Lord is aware that I'm expecting some acreage alongside my home in heaven. I don't need a mansion, but I do need critter room.

Yes, Boo, I do have another theory, and I guess time will prove it right or wrong. As you know, I drink tea all the time. No sugar or sweetener, but I do like to vary it with different things. My favorite is dried hibiscus petals. They give a delicious tangy tartness to the tea, a very bright and clean taste. My daughter got me some at the herb farm in Fredericksburg, and I enjoyed them for about a year, because you only use a little bit to a gallon of brewed tea. Eventually I ran out, and was missing my hibiscus, when I found "flor de jamaica" in one of the ethnic hispanic stores in this area. That means "flower of Jamaica" and is, in fact, dried hibiscus. I bought some - very cheap, under $2 for a large bag. I should have known better. It wasn't the clean, delicate dried petals I was used to, it was the whole bloomin' flower head, even with bits of stem attached. The color was darker, and the flavor wasn't the bright and clean taste I was used to, it was heavier, almost smoky-tasting. Still, it had the familiar tang, and was better than nothing. I had been drinking it for about two months when all this kidney stuff was discovered. When Dr. A told me to quit taking Advil, I did, but still just had a suspicion it might be something else. Then the hibiscus flowers camem to mind. I know that stuff is brought in straight from Mexico, who knows what kind of oversight or control is in place. I also know that Mexico permits the use of all sorts of pesticides, including DDT, that are banned in the US. My theory is that the "flor de jamaica" has been sprayed with some gosh-awful bug killer, which is still present on the dried flowers, and I'm wondering if that could have been the toxin that was upsetting my kidneys. I haven't presented this idea to the doctor yet, and she's gone for the weekend, but come Monday, we're going to talk.

As for the back thing, I'm going to ask for a referral to an orthopedist, and if they think a spinal fusion would help, I will let them do it. It will be a minimal fusion, since only about three vertebrae are involved, and it's lumbar, not in the upper body where a fusion causes such stiffness. At age seventy, I do not plan to spend my remaining years "resting" and "treating" and coddling this back pain. Fix it! I have a few more years to live and I intend to do just that, and enjoy every one of them.

New Neighbor, you have had your challenges with the shoulder surgeries. I'm glad you're comi8ng down the home stretch on it. Pretty soon you'll be good as new!

Durn your hide, Possum. You're one of those people who do thoughtful things like keeping a little notebook with important dates in it, thereby making some of the rest of us look like thoughtless clods. I'm glad you did, though, so that Sean and Mr. and Mrs. Asa didn't get overlooked on their special day. I've just got to try to do better.

Jorge and Maria have been here and gone, and my house is clean. They arrived about 9:20, left about 12:30 and it would take too much space to list everything they got done. Jorge even went in the garage and hung all thirteen of my Christmas deer on their pegs on the garage wall. They had just been in a pile where I put them, because I can't hang them up. David was planning to do it tomorrow, and now he won't have to. Jorge will find something to do, you can count on that, and Maria just never slows down. Good people!

Well, even with all the help, I've been up and doing too much, and my back is all in a snit. Guess I'd better go lie down for a while. I've got four dozen eggs to dye this evening (boiled them last night) and a cake to bake. I need a little rest first. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

Then, the story goes, a mysterious "stimulus grant" of $17 million was given to the school, and his job was saved. Now, it's no secret how I feel about the man who currently occupies the Oval Office. However, fair is fair. I checked this out on Truthorfiction.com, and it is NOT true. My cousin sent it to me, and I have made her aware of the truth. The email includes a link to bing.com, and cites it as the proof. Naturally, I didn't click the link, but entered the address myself to get to the site. It tells a lot about Craig Robinson - he really is Michelle Obama's brother - but nowhere does it verify that rumor. I don't know who starts these things, but I wish they wouldn't. In my opinion, we need to let Mr. Obama pass - or fail - on his own, without any falsified assistance from the opposite side. It's a simple case of falsifying, and it's just not right to falsify. Amy has family down and we are all getting together for a bar-b-q. Once AGAIN, I have been asked to bring the baked beans (won't this family ever tire of them?!). Matt only likes "Aunt Julie's" baked beans so I got elected. Should be fun. I really like Amy's family, especially her mom and dad. Real nice folks and funny. It is just nice to be having a family gathering at someone else's house for a change. Of course the kids are already wanting to come to my house after lunch to hang out with the donkey...kids. I went to the feed store today and bought some stuff to spray on Thelma Lou's legs to heal some kind of thing she has...forgot the name of it...rain rot or something horrible. Anyways, I sprayed it on one leg and she took off. It isn't supposed to sting but she sure didn't like it...maybe just the sound of the sprayer. I also got some shampoo to wash her with...she is a very dirty and smelly donkey.

I picked up pup #2 from the vet today and she was doing pretty good most of the day but she isn't looking so good right now. I am concerned about her. I am hoping she is just tired but I don't know.

Had some company drop by today. Our friends Ronny and Rose. Rose made us some banana pudding and dropped it by...good friend to have and makes very good banana pudding! We sat out on the front porch until dark and talked about this and that. Very enjoyable evening.

Thank you for those prayers, REV, and may you have a blessed Easter as well. I am already getting pretty excited about it...really looking forward to church tomorrow. Easter time is so special to me because I was born again during the week of Easter, 1979...31 years ago. I knew I loved Jesus then but I didn't know just how much He had done for me on that cross then. Amazing grace.

Well, Possum, so glad your sister and her family are with you for Easter. Hope you enjoy their visit.

Happy Easter to you, TOM.

Well, I had better head to bed so I will be alert for church tomorrow.

Goodnight and love to all,
Boo

April 04, 2010 - Msg 78515: You are welcome Possum. Glad you had a good Easter. :-):-)

Ro, thank you for the email video. I loved it so much. I had not heard that song in years and it still gives me countless goosbumps!

We had such a nice Easter. Sunday morning was very hectic, running around trying to get everyone ready and out the door for sunday school and once I got there, i remembered that I forgot to put the baked beans in the oven to slow cook and I had to drive back home, then rush back...it just seemed like the whole morning was like that and I really felt like I wasn't connecting in church...didn't really listen to the sermon and Erin was not sitting still...you know how it is with kids sometimes. I was feeling pretty stressed by the time I got home but I had a chance to chill out and ended up having a great day. The weather was perfect and we had such a nice time at matt and amy's house. Good food and good company...a combination that's hard to beat. :-)

Did any of you happen to see the special on The History Channel about the Shroud of Turin? It was a new one and had a computer generated 3-d image of the face on the shroud that many believe is the face of Christ. It was amazing. If you haven't seen it...look for it. It is a very good documentary and is a faith-builder...it is pro-christian instead of trying to tear down the Christian faith. By the way, MDC, they spoke about that very verse you mentioned above and how it helps authenticate the shroud.

Well, better go spend some time with the family and wind down. Love to all!

Hey Folks

PLAY BALL!!

Looks like we all had a good Easter, that's great to hear.

MDC-Thanks for looking but we were outside a whole lot this weekend, it almost hit 90 here Saturday, which is way, WAY, too hot for me. But, it was very nice just to get out and do some stuff in the yard and me and Mrs. auh20 went for a bunch of long walks, it's great living in the sticks.

Boo-Thanks for the heads up on the documentary. I love actual documentaries, not the drivel by Moore, Gore and the "Super Size Me" clown. Real doc's don't cut and splice.

Thought of you folks often this weekend and, as always, included all of during prayer time. Yes, you to Me-They, my buddy.

Mary Wiggins-Great to see ya! How are things on the other side of the Great Lakes?

Peace,

We had two more babies born yesterday. . .that gives us 23 babies (only four girls in all). But it was a beautiful day.

I found a new Christian singing group to me - they have 3 cd's so they aren't new but the group is Selah. Beautiful music - the cd is 50% hymns. It is just gorgeous. I found them looking for a song to sing at the sunrise service for Easter sunday - I chose Beautiful Terrible Cross.

Everyone have a blessed day. . .

Earthquake in Southern cal yesterday! I'm not sayin'...well, OK, maybe I AM sayin'...
HM- would love to see those song lyrics.
I got an e-mail yesterday about why the gospel account of John mentions that the facecloth
of Jesus was FOLDED in the tomb. Very interesting.
For one, it would show that the body was not stolen, because why would robbers take the time to FOLD the napkin, and also, apparently there was a Jewish custom where, if the master of a home was leaving the table after a meal, he would just throw his napkin on the table, but if he FOLDED the napkin, it meant he was COMING BACK! Way cool!

Poor Horatio- Ironically I got the form this weekend and was going to take it with me on my trip next year.
Hey to everyone else! I need to run. Today I have to run a few errands, including dropping off my computer at the computer store. Tomorrow Bryson and I are leaving for Kentucky to visit for the rest of the week. I'll try to check in at some point in time at my parents. My paternal grandmother has been ill with shingles and alzheimers so I'm going to spend a majority of my time relieving my family members. Take care porch!

Auh2o, do you have bears in those woods?? Yikes..

MDC, my dad was just telling me today that he has been concerned for both of brothers who live in California in the San Francisco area. He is nervous because of all the recent quakes. I have to say it makes me a little nervous for them, too.

HM, several months ago I posted a Selah video on here...forgot which song. They have some awesome voices in the group. Did you sing a solo?...Did you get lessons from Eleanore Poltice??...

Took dad to the eye doc today for 2 hours worth of eye tests in order to tell us what we already knew. Oh, brother.

"Hey" to KYGirl.

MDC, you should look for that documentary I spoke of...I think you would find it very interesting. They will probably be offerring it on DVD soon on the History Channel. They have one other documentary on the shroud but this was a new one out this year.

Better go work on dinner...

generations all going to church together. Awww...Claude Sr., Claude Jr.,
plain Claude Beaman, and Claudette. What a wonderful thing.
OPIE: Pa?
ANDY: Huh?
OPIE: Why do they call Mr. Beaman plain Claude Beaman?
ANDY: Because he's not a senior and he's not a junior, so they call him plain
Claude Beaman.
AUNT BEE: Oh, that's right. You know, all these years I thought they called him
plain Claude Beaman because he was so homely.
ANDY: He's not so homely. He's got the Beaman overbite, but that's more of a
characteristic.

April 06, 2010 - Msg 78531: Mornin' all...hope you slept well. I did for a change so it should be a good day even though (and I know I haven't said it in awhile...) I have lots of LAUNDRY to do. For one thing, I still have not unpacked most of my clothes and Bruce put them in a big black bag in the garage, where the pups tore into them and now they all have to be washed again. I have had a very limited wardrobe and have not really minded that but it's time to find some more shirts.

HM, I don't know how you do it with all those bottle babies. They have to be fed around the clock, don't they? Must get pretty tiring. Why aren't they drinking the mom's milk instead?

Very cloudy, humid day today...but that's ok. I will have Emily today and wanted her to be able to play outside but not sure. There is ALOT of wet sand out there...someone said yesterday that we have the mother of all sandboxes out there and when you consider all 5 acres is mostly sand, I guess so. We have a few patches of Bermuda and some weeks but mostly sand, which means we have to sweep these wood floors alot.

Did I tell you we gave the donkey a bath on Sunday? No easy task because she did NOT like it. She didn't kick but she certainly tried to get away from us. Finally she gave up and just stood there. Can't say it mattered much but she smells better when you are downwind from her. I have been trying to doctor her legs with some medicine I got from the feed store but she wants none of that, either. They look bad, though, and even bleed some. I have already run out of horse feed and have to get some more today...this could get expensive. I need to check into where I can get the best price around here.

Well, sorry my post was kind of boring I guess. I had better get Erin up...I already went in there once but it is mighty quiet now. BTW, meant to ask if you all have seen the movie "Second Hand Lions"? Pretty good if you haven't, try to see it sometime.

Better git.

Boo

April 06, 2010 - Msg 78532: Boo - the babies get fed three times a day morning, noon, and night - we had a couple cases of mastitis, a couple of mom's didn't drop their milk, and one mom was 9 years old and she kept one kid and I helped her with the other. And yes, Boo - it is tiring! The boys help some. . .

On the donkey - if she ever lays her ears back, be careful, cause a kick is coming. . .not sure what is wrong with her legs but probably fly bites. . .wash her legs with pinesol water - warm (fill a bucket with good warm water and pour in some pinesol). Wash her legs well . . .let them dry. . . then you can either put purple spray or yellow spray (we call is blu kote - it is a Tractor supply and spray her legs down) That will help heal them. Buy some Bronco and that will help with the fly bites. Pinesol is healing and it disinfects as well.

Who would have thought the porch is your livestock forum.

Things are pretty nice weather wise here - suppose to break a temp high here with 85 degrees.

Need to get some work completed.

April 06, 2010 - Msg 78535: I'm here, MDC. No, the back hasn't flared up again, it just hasn't ever gotten well. It's better, but still painful and I hold onto the furniture a lot. I'm supposed to see an orthopedist soon, but don't have an appointment yet. Something has to happen, or else I have to get back to work, and I'm not really up to that right now.

Joe and two helpers are here today, doing a spring makeover on the yard. Clearing out the weeds which have managed to put in an appearance in spite of our best preventive efforts, and putting fresh compost down in all the beds. It will look so nice when they finish. The main iris bed has one big beautiful bloom, and about fifty big fat buds. When all those buds open, it's going to be an eye-popping sight. There are other irises blooming around the yard, on older, more established clumps, but the new bed, which we built about a year and a half ago, is just coming into its own. I call it the main bed, because it's so big, about thirty feet long by eight feet wide, sort of a crescent shape. I can't wait for those buds to open.

Well, better make some calls and get things rolling on this doctor business. Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena
