January 09, 2010 - Msg 77116: I'm glad to see MT back too. We miss you when you stay away.

I just got home from our monthly bunco party. Lots of fun - twelve good church ladies sitting around rolling dice, drinking tea and laughing like schoolkids. We do have a good time.

It is now 22 degrees here in the Dallas area, absolutely no wind so there's no wind chill, but it's gonna get COLD tonight! The prediction is for 15 degrees. I'm a little concerned about my young dogwood tree. I probably should have covered it, but it's too late now. I sure do hope I don't lose it. I ordered it from a nursery on the California coast, after much searching. It's a Satomi dogwood, a fairly unusual variety, and should make a beautiful tree, if it survives. It's been in the ground here for about two years, so the roots are well established. I just hope its crown doesn't freeze.

I would like to ask all of you to pray for a young Mongolian friend of mine. Her name is Badmaa, and our mission team became involved with her several years ago. If you've read my Mongolian blogs, her name will be familiar to you. One of our doctors helped her get to America and let her live with his family while she finished her education. She just graduated from medical school, and now has been diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of multiple sclerosis. This is just a tragedy. This girl is one of the sweetest, most enthusiastic Christians you could ever meet, and she had high hopes for helping the people in her country. The level of medical education there is far below ours. Badmaa had been debating whether to go home and practice medicine, or to remain here and practice and send her earnings home. Either way, it would be a blessing to her people. They certainly need her medical expertise, but poverty there is unbelievable and the money could have saved lives. So please pray for healing for Badmaa.

Well, I need a cup of tea, my big old deep and comfy chair, the TV remote and a warm puppy, all of which are available. Life is good. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

It is good to have M-T back on the porch, I sure have missed you.

Thanks for br4akfast SPOT. My soup should be easy on the gums as well.

January 09, 2010 - Msg 77127: Good evening, all. We got to 36 this afternoon, but the sun just went down and it's dropping fast. Pond is still frozen over, birdbath is a solid block. That little 36 degree warm-up was brief.

REV, I have often wondered - why couldn't you take Jake along? You're usually not too far from your rig, and would be able to check on him pretty often. I'll bet he'd enjoy being a "roadie." Shoot, when you're here, he can come stay with Starr!

Well, I'm on my way over to Eloise's. She's got a roast cooked and all the goodies with it, and then we'll watch the Cowboy game. At least, the guys will, and maybe the girls will check in now and then. Not being much of a game fan myself, I just enjoy watching the others jump around and holler now and then.

Be careful, anybody who's traveling tonight. Spot, I hope all the lights stay on and you don't have to fix anything. Be blessed, all. See you at preachin' in the morning. --Romeena

Hello porch family....just got back to the motorhome from my concert. We had a great time. PTL

OK Tom.......you know that you were thinking the same thing about our crazy bunch here:) lol

auh2o.....so far I've had internet service. Hopefully where I'm at tomorrow I'll have it too.

Ro.....we have taken Jake a couple of times when we were up in TN. But up there I'm normaly hooked up (motorhome) at a RV park (full hook-up) that my friend owns. The only problem I have is many times (most of the time) I am hooked up at a church and most of the churches don't have RV hook-ups. So I have to use an adaptor to hook into a regular outlet. That's fine but in some cases the breaker in the church trips and I have to reset it. When that happens, a motorhome gets VERY hot (or cold) VERY fast and that could be bad news if an animal is in there. If you remember at your church they even installed a RV hookup for me when I was there but most churches don't have them. Usually I don't have a problem but every once and in awhile it happens so it's best not to take that chance with my little best buddy:)

You all take care and stay warm. Give Jesus a big ole "in the spirit hug" tonight before you go to sleep. HE loves you and so do I!
Prayers for all the porch family.

REV, I hadn't thought about the hook-up problems. I guess I just thought you always had hook-ups, but of course, I can see that there would be times when you wouldn't. The funeral for my Aunt was yesterday. Very nice. She lived a good life and was honored by he family beautifully. I saw a lot of folks I haven't seen in years, and others I haven't seen since my other Aunts passing last year. Many of us older ones are bothered by the fact that we are now the oldest generation. YIKES!

Good to see you posting MT. I'm certain most Americans are prudent with their lifestyles and purchases. It's all relative anyway. What is a mansion to some is a shanty to others. I try not to concern myself with how others choose to spend their money. As long as they have come by it honestly, who should decide what is too much? If that is the case with "things" it won't be long until it's applied for everything. From what you can eat, drive, wear, family size, you name it. It's a slippery slope in my view.

Boo, you are really making the move this week? Man I bet you're pumped. I bet you'll be more pumped when your in the place. Then the landscape work begins. But I always love that, or at least did until my back became a complainer.

Albert, did the ground shake at your place yesterday? I heard there was a big one, although a bit north of you.

Auh2o - I've learned over the years which areas of LA to steer clear of and which areas are cool to travel to or through. Downtown city hall area and Union Station are the only areas that I go to these days. From where I live, these areas are a snap to get to (mileage and traffic wise). One thing for sure - a person has to keep their wits about them and be alert when you are on foot anywheres in the big city. Number one rule: never be in or go to an area that you have no business being in! Also - keep your car doors locked while driving at all times!

MDC, Holy Toledo do your Cards keep things interesting? If anyone missed the Arizona Green Bay play-off game, you missed a barn burner. If you love defense you got bored early and often. Most points ever scored in a play-off in NFL history. And to think the Cards won it in overtime with a defensive play. Kurt Warner continues to impress me.

Well better find a good low key book to settle me down so's I can get some shut eye tonight. Maybe something from the lite classics.

I only saw the first part of that Packer/Cardinals game, when the Packers were down something like 24 to 7. My mom probably wasn't too happy with that game as she is a Packers fan. At least when they are not playing the Vikings, because she loves Brett Favre.
I was surprised they caught up as close as they did though after that rough start.

The wife is still down in Indiana helping her mom. Don't know when she'll be back. She said something about maybe next week. I think her mom is doing pretty good.

January 11, 2010 - Msg 77150: Morning all.

Hey Salty, I hope you got a good warm fur going on. You need it with them single digit numbers. You too Spot.

Sterling, you said you're "not to regular" and you seem to "have less and less time to do whatever it is you do" and you try to pop in when you can while other times being content just to read. I hope you are talking about porch visits and not potty visits. :) If it's the latter I would suggest a high fiber diet and remove all reading material from your bathroom so you can stay focused on the task at hand. :)

There is a lot of disgruntled Packer fans who are upset that a face mask penalty was not called on that final play last night. In watching the replays they have a point. Rodgers was clearly face masked. But there was so much going on with that play I think the refs just didn't see it happen. But I'm sure calls were missed on both sides during the course of the game, so I hope it doesn't sour the Arizona win. It looked like to me the face mask came after the fumble. It should still have been a penalty that would have voided the fumble and given Green Bay a first down, but at least the face mask didn't cause the fumble which would have added insult to injury. At least it didn't look like it did to me. The Saints Cards game should be a high scoring affair also.

Well enough sports talk. I better get to work before I get my hiney tanned.

I always tour Florida in January and it's always so nice to get down here in the warmer weather during this time of year. Well they've been breaking records everyday that I've been here with low temps:( All the oranges and strawberries are freezing here. Where I'm at now, the fields look like a winter wonderland because they are spraying them with water to try and save them but from all reports it's not working. It's a solid sheet of ice over the fields. So get ready for high produce prices.

Well I've got 2 days free to just relax. It will give me time to do some writing. That's when a lot of my songs are written....on the road.

January 11, 2010 - Msg 77154: Good morning, porch! Sterling, we all wish you'd be a bit more "regular" - in terms of porch visits, that is - and grace us with your articulate presence more often.

REV, that's scary news about the Florida fruit crops. I hope the loss is confined to the crops that are on the trees and vines right now, and that damage to the actual plants is limited. I don't know about strawberries down there, whether they get more than one crop a year or not, but the oranges produce two and sometimes three crops. It's not unusual to see an orange grove with beautiful oranges hanging on the trees, and blooms popping at the same time, on the same trees. It's really beautiful. There's an orange grove directly across the lake from my son's home down there, and the breeze carries the fragrance of the orange blossoms right into his house! Lovely!

I'm going phone-shopping in a little while. My beloved, 30-yr old (yes, 30) Sony cordless phone has quit on me finally, and I bought a Uniden to replace it. I hate the thing, it's a piece of junk. My dear old Sony had a battery in the phone, and one in the base station, which was the charger. The phone didn't have to be near the base, in fact there wasn't even a place to dock the phone. When the battery in the phone would run down, you just swap them out - put the depleted battery in the charger and the freshly charged one in the phone. It was usually good for at least three weeks. Also, I could take the phone clear out to my back fence and it still worked beautifully. This worthless Uniden has to live on the base to remain charged, and if I carry it more than ten feet away from the base it starts to crackle and snap and cut out. I hate the thing, and it is going to be replaced.

REV, while you're writing songs, I wish you'd consider a Christmas CD. I know, we talked about this once before, and I understand that you write all your own music. I don't blame you, when you can write as well as you do, then you should. However, Christmas music is a field of its own, and I think you could use some of the songs from public domain and it would be fine. You'd do a good job with them, put your own special stamp on them, and it would be great! Mix in a few that you would write yourself, and you'd have a winner. I know you could write them - Christmas music can take so many forms. I'll bet you could even manage to produce one that's cute and funny and still tells the story. Sure do wish you'd give it a shot.

Well, I'm off on a phone search. Be blessed, porch family. --Romeena

January 11, 2010 - Msg 77160: Woohoo! It's now 43 degrees here, sun is shining, squirrels are out in force, swarming all over my yard. They have emptied the feeders, which is fine, that's why I fill them. What they spill, the birds get off the ground. I've got the low-level sprinklers going on the rose bed, and before I leave I'll turn that off and turn on the big rotors to over-spray the rest of the yard. My pansies are looking a bit puny after all the freezing weather. They can take it, but I think the cold has dried them out and they'd appreciate a drink right about now. That sprinkler system is worth its weight in gold. Without it, I could never, ever have what I have in that back yard.

Just like that call at the superbowl, was he in, was he out? A laser could have determined that too, but then
sport becomes cold, and the human interaction factoris lost. So, the luck of the draw played in our favor this time by the ref not seeing the foul. That's the way I see it. (:

January 11, 2010 - Msg 77162: Well, I bought a phone. It's a Panasonic, two handsets, several features I don't need, but they were on all models, so what are you gonna do?

I took my old phone to Batteries Plus, and the helpful young man there put one on a fast charger for me, got a little juice in it, and when I put it in my old phone, it came to life and tried to find a signal. So, it would appear that the problem is not in the phone, but rather in the base, which charges the batteries. It doesn't charge them anymore, and without that working, the phone is useless. Now here's the thing. Somewhere, in my garage, under stacks of "stuff" is my dad's old phone, which is identical to mine. The last I knew, he said it wasn't working, but in his befuddled state there at the last, it's possible it just needed the batteries charged. If I can find it, wouldn't it be a hoot if his charger would work with my phone? Or maybe his phone works too? Gotta dig that out - I actually just recently remembered it was out there somewhere. At least I think I still have it - I hope I haven't given it away somewhere along the line.

Oh well - for now, I have to go to work. I'll get this shift behind me, and then I'm off until next Monday night! A whole week to live like a normal person. Hooray!

Be blessed, porch. --Romeena

Romeena: I feel for ya! I have a small cupboard full of gear that lasted for eons only to be replaced by new junk that is lousy at best. Phones, radios, kitchen appliances.... (they're like old friends. I don't wanna toss them out.)
SPOT: Yep. West Coast. I'm around 35 miles from the beach. About the same mileage to the mountains too. Not too far to reach the nearest desert by freeway.

January 11, 2010 - Msg 77167: Thanks guys. I had to come where some people like me.
Cause my wife isn't one of them right now. Ugh. I hate when she is like this.
If I could bend your ears for a minute. We got in a blowup over this chat thing we were doing, and some misunderstandings all around I think. The problem is, she keeps going and going in her anger, like she doesn't want to calm the waters, even when I throw an olive branch. And seeming to want to do whatever she can to get me insecure about our relationship. And then accuse me of being insecure. Figure that one out.

Sorry, not very articulate tonight. But not feeling real good right now.
I wish she could know how she is hurting me. And care.

Sorry guys. Don't mean to drone on about my problems.
Right now, I wish I WAS in Mayberry with Andy and the Gang.

Actually, I wish my wife was here, so I could at least try to get a hug from her, and we could work this thing out better than just on some stupid chat thing. It is hard to hug when she is in Indiana and I am in Wisconsin.

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77169: Oh Sterling, please don't be sorry for sharing. I wish we could all give you a big hug right now. I wish we could all go back to Mayberry, too. Wewould sit on Andy's porch with you and then we could walk uptown to watch them change the letters on the Grande. We could stroll down to Wally's for a soda and a moonpie or I could treat you to a cup of coffee at the Bluebird Diner. :-)

This is for you, Sterling:

Morning porch family!

Sterling......remember buddy, you've got a porch family here that cares for you and is praying for your situation. I promise!

Ro.....there is a orange juice plant right up the road from where I'm at now and you can smell those oranges pretty much all the time. Smells so good.
And thanks for the encouragement on the Christmas cd and we are considering it.

Spot....man you are all chipper this morning. Must be that cool air:)

Boo.....that little stroll down Mayberry sure sounds wonderful.

Gotta a meeting with some folks this morning so I better get moving. You all have a great day and be sure to tell/show someone the love of Jesus today!
Love and prayers!

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77174: Somebody bump Spot. He's stuck!

Sterling, I am sorry you're having marital problems. I know you have mentioned before the different paths you and your wife seem to be on. I'll be sure to include you both in my prayers friend.

Hey Rev, whenever I visit my Uncle in Ventura California I enjoy those orchard smells. There are Orange, lemon, and grapefruit farms not far from his house. Combined with the fresh Pacific ocean mist that comes in (he's 5 minutes away from the ocean) I just gotta believe it's a hint of heaven on earth. And if you have ever had a fresh orange picked off the tree (he has two trees in his backyard) you'll be spoiled for life cause there ain't nothing like it you'll ever find in a supermarket. You have to eat them standing over a sink, they are that juicy.

Cold and damp here. We are stuck in one of those dreaded temp. inversions here when all the cold and pollution gets trapped in our valleys. Miserable I tell ya.

Better get.

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77175:
Asa- now there you go again, talkin' apples and oranges! haha
Sterling- funny you should mention mayberry, because I was watching "Aunt Bee Crusader" last night, "We will not sing!" et al! and was thinking how Mayberry isnt all gay pari, it also had it's bad moments!!
As i mentioned a few weeks ago, life aint all Andy and Miss Peggy singing "Down in the Valley." Some "Dons" creep in there once in a while. (: And i do know that you have had your share of "dons." But I'm not even sure what you mean by the "chat thing"? Does she not like you coming here?
Also, have you guys ever tried counseling? Just a thought. But I will most definitely be praying for you friend.
Take care. Prayers for Kai and your wife too.

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77176: REV! Yippee! Considering it? (A Christmas album.) I like the sound of that. Sure hope it works out!

By the way, where in Florida are you right now, and where will you be? My son and his wife live in Mt. Dora, a delightful little town just north of Orlando. Wouldn't it be fun if they could catch a concert?

Well, I'm pooped. Last night was a doozy, and I'm glad it's over. Now I'm off until next Monday, and I'm loving the whole idea. For the moment, a nap is in order, so off I go. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77178: You people lift up my heart when it is down.
Thank you, all.

I had never heard that song before, Boo. It is real nice. Thank you.

No, MDC, it is not about the porch. Though she has said something about it to me in the past.
No, the "chat thing" is real chat rooms, and now there is this video chat. I have never liked the chat idea. I think it only can lead to problems. But I put it on here at her insistence so she and Kai could talk and see each other while she is away. Anyway, I asked the wrong question and as usual it blew up into a big to-do.
After that it just spiraled from there, with her trying everything to get my goat. After that, I wrote her an apologetic(but not groveling, as I didn't even know what I was apologetic for) text message on the phone. Her last text to me was just trying to get me going again with the same argument, so I didn't even reply back. That and I was tired, it was about 1:30am.

But you know what? Once again, prayer must have worked, because I was expecting a whole day of more vitriol, but God must have softened her heart during the night, because she called me and we were back to our semi-normal selves just talking about what-not and where we want to go on a "honeymoon" type trip(her idea of a few days ago).

Yeah MDC, I know Mayberry isn't all roses. But I mentioned that because at least I would be around caring friends. Sort of like here on the porch.
I don't know what the day holds. One minute I can be having a good day and the next, from one misunderstood word, can be h#ll on earth. But I am glad I have friends on this here porch, because as I have said, you lift up my heart. And it was very heavy last night.

Ro....I am in and around the Tampa area now. Then I head up to the Ocala & Lake City area. The closest I would be to them is in Brandon which is still kinda far. Would love to meet them. That would be great.

Tom....you're so right.....Mayberry can be where we are at.

Sterling....I just pray that maybe she is allowing God the soften her heart. And you're right, we don't know what the day may hold but as His Word promises, we know WHO holds the day.

Gotta go but remember...Everyone keep Jesus close by.....He's bigger than any of the "life's bullies".
Love and prayers!

Hey Folks

Sterling-Prayers, hope ya have a peaceful day.

Rev-Thanks for the phrasing it that way. "You all have a great day and be sure to "TELL/SHOW" someone the love of Jesus today!" I have always had a bit of trouble being able to tell someone about the love of Jesus. I've never shied away once the topic has risen but to offer it first...I don't know why, but it's hard for me. I always, always try and show it. Thanks.

auh2o

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77181: You are welcome, Sterling. I just love that song! You know, from what you have shared over the years, I think it's your wife that needs the counseling. She seems to have some resentments..maybe holding in alot of anger from past hurts or something. Of course, I'm no Dr. Phil... ;-) I can remember that when i was younger, I was more difficult because I was insecure in some ways. Most anger springs from fear...fear of rejection and so on, and I had alot of that from growing up under the same roof with my mom (and probably from dad's unfaithfulness to mom). As I have gotten older, spent some time with a wonderful counselor, and feel very confident in the love of my husband and friends (and you all contributed to that with your unconditional acceptance here), I find that I am much less easily offended and confrontational. Just my thoughts. Prayers for you and your family.

Better go fold some clothes...break is over.

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77182: By the way, TOM, I loved what you said about Mayberry being where we are. Well said. :-)

Oops, that's GO

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77185: Sterling: Glad to hear that things are semi-back on track with you and the missus. I've been down that same road before but that was before chat and video chat were common place things. Phone arguments were about as modern as I got. Still, the pain and grief from those verbal disagreements always left me with a big knot in my stomach that lasted for days. It took a long time for me to develop shoulders and back where stuff like that would just roll off of.
Probably helped too that the wife traded me in for a new model years and years ago. lol! I'm not poking fun of your situation, Sterling. Nope, not a bit. It warmed my heart to read that things are back on track after being derailed so badly that it left you so blue. Hang in there, friend!
albert

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77186: Thank you kindly, Albert. I could probably learn a thing or two from you about coping with this kind of stuff.

Well, Boo, I do know that her dad was unfaithful to her mom, from what her mom says anyway. Maybe that has something to do with it. But in this case, it is my wife accusing me of being insecure, for just asking a question, and trying like heck to ask it in as non-confrontational a manner as possible. Though it never works. I don't know if that is the same kind of thing that you were explaining.

MDC, I'm not sure of PMS, but I am rethinking something you told me to look into, BPD.

Tom, I love your sentiments about having our own little Mayberry.

Well, have to finish dinner for the Kai and I.

-Sterling Holobyte

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77187: Good evening, porch! TOM, I don't think I've ever heard anyone make such a beautiful statement about Mayberry. My friend, you truly do have the spirit of Mayberry in your heart.

Albert, may I say how happy I am that you've joined our little family? You fit like a hand in a glove, and are so very welcome here. You bring a cheerful, positive influence, and we hope you'll stay around.

Sterling, I think I'd go with the BPD. Sure does fit with the behavior. If that's the case, I think your best course is to deflect whenever and wherever you can, because her course will change in a day or an hour or a moment, and the less said in the meantime, the better.

REV, I think Ocala is about 30 miles or so from Mt. Dora. I don't know where Brandon is. If you get a chance, email me your schedule, and I'll mention it to my son. He hates to drive - I've seen him rent a plane and fly for a hundred mile trip or sometimes even less. (Actually, I think it's not so much that he hates to drive as that he loves to fly!)

Well, better go rustle up some grub, I guess. Got a few scrawny little leftovers, but maybe I can open a can of something to fill it out a little. Good thing I'm not a picky eater.

Be blessed, porch. --Romeena

I just heard about the devastating earthquake in Haiti. My goodness, that poor country! Prayers for the whole situation. My friends, I say it again, we are living in prophetic times.
Do you have "extra oil in your lamp?"
Peace of Jesus!

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77189:
Hello porch family.

My heart just breaks for the people in Haiti. I have been there to do concerts and have a number of friends from that country. Believe it or not I was eating dinner with some misionaries from Haiti when the news hit. We have been on the phones trying to find out all that we can but it's very limited as of now. I know a pastor that is right in the center of where it hit. Please keep these folks in your prayers.

MDC.....I agree with you brother!

Love and prayers for all my porch family!

January 12, 2010 - Msg 77190: I just don't know, guys. My wife finally called to say goodnight to Kai, after saying she was going somewhere and wouldn't have her phone. That was 8 hours later. I would like to ask her about it, but really don't want to get in another blowup like last night.
I sometimes feel like she is just laughing at me now, hoping to get me going. But then again, after last night and some of the horrible things she said, as well as her telling me that she is still mad about last night, I can't help but worry about her loyalties right now. And if I am anywhere in there.

And after such a good start to the day, too. I feel it is tainted.

I am so sorry for bringing this up, especially after the earthquake in Haiti. They are expecting great casualties. And they say Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. Probably poorer now. I pray for the people there.

Yes MDC, maybe I shouldn't be worrying about my problems so much, as there are bigger things going on. All I can say right now is, come quickly Jesus.

Sorry guys, I am tired.
