August 27, 2008 - Msg 65609: May I please "ditto" what Me-They said about Chick-Fil-A? That is one classy operation. Food's great, too!

I picked up Subway sandwiches for myself and Joe today - there's one just about half a mile from my house. Their sandwiches are great, but with the exception of the cashier, the employees need to go to Chick-Fil-A's School of Service and Courtesy. It began with the order taker, who also is the first one in the food preparation line. She couldn't speak English! All she could say was "What you want?" I told her - two roast chicken sandwiches. Blank. I pointed to the picture on the poster. She set up one and went to the next customer. I interrupted her and told her I wanted two sandwiches. Blank stare. "Two sandwiches". Blank stare, and "What you want?" Me- "Dos tortas, los dos de pollo." Oh. That did it. Management should be sure the first person on the line at least speaks English, even if they can't smile at the same time. The veggie-adders did their job, but weren't friendly either. The cashier was a doll, very friendly, enthusiastic and pleasant. So - terrible first impression, great final impression. And very good sandwiches. Good peanut butter cookies, too!

Well, I'm ready to settle down with a big glass of tea and rest a while. Got a lot of weeds dealt with, the broken water line is fixed in the rose bed, and Joe has headed for home. It's hot out there, and I'm pooped! I made a quick trip to the local farmer's market, got some fruit, some tomatoes, an avocado and a watermelon, and I'm set for supper. I have a bit of leftover roast, so a slice of that with some horseradish sauce on it, and a bowl of fruit, and I'll eat like royalty! It's too hot for anything heavy anyway.

Be blessed, friends! --Romeena

August 27, 2008 - Msg 65617: Good Evenin' Friends,
I can only visit for a few. That stranger is driving me crazy again, haha. I saw "my" episode again the other day.
Otis- How do you do? Welcome back. Did ya bring any homemade ice cream to share?
Mrs. Wiley- How is everything? How did your daughter's wedding go?
Mavis- I'm so glad to hear that Mr. Neff is the man of your dreams.
Boo- that poem was heartbreaking! Nick tells me stuff all of the time like that from kids at his school. Did you get your Dad's checking account fixed?
Me-They- You don't have to tell me about Chick-fil-A! Every single one that I have visited, and this is their headquarters so that is many, they have all been courteous, friendly, quick, efficient, and gooood.
Spot & Asa- Have fun playing golf! I used to play, but haven't had time in a good while. Bryson and I will probably go to the driving range once it is cool.
Homemaker- Good luck on your job interview! Let us know how it turns out!
Des- Glad you could stop by for a visit. It's so strange, but cool, that all 3 of y'all stopped by the same day!
Tom- Another lovely poem. I hope you are feeling more loved now!
Romeena- Glad to hear Joe is doing better. Little Starr knows quality when she sees it!
Sterling- Keep us up to date on how the Mrs. is doing. I know this cannot help y'alls situation.

I know there are others, but I'm plain tuckered out. I need to get a good nights sleep. Tomorrow I have to help chaperone around 100 5th graders to the Georgia Aquarium!
Y'all have a good evenin' tonight and a happy Mayberry day tomorrow.

Sorry I missed the fun you had but I've scrubbed down the porch and removed a few messages from the "archives" to keep things friendly.

Otis! Wow! it's great to hear from you. I was thinking about you about two weeks back and started searching around the web for you. Couldn't find hide nor hair of you though. I'm sure glad you dropped by and a I hope you'll visit again sometime soon.

I'm been a visitor here on the porch...I don't even want to think about how long. I don't drop in and visit too often any more because I have so many irons in the fire but I do try and keep up as best I can. Keeping the place running smooth takes most of my time.

Sorry again for not being around, folks, to take care of problems. I should be around for a while so drop me an e-mail if you need me and I'll do my best.

FINALLY RAIN!! We have needed rain for quite a few weeks. A brown yard isn't very pretty, or soft on my tender tootsies. M-T, are you getting any rain today?
My goodness, somebody shook the bushes and some of our favorite people returned to the porch. Just warms my heart to see folks return and jump right in. We have a lot of catching up to do.

August 28, 2008 - Msg 65628: Hey Lucy, yes, I took Dad to the bank and he was overdrawn by 200.00 and had no idea why. So...I had them set him up with an online account so I can keep up with everything and even pay his bills (when he will let me). Anyway, I will be able to keep up with it and also one of my brother wanted to send him some financial help and Dad would never hear of it, but this way, we can put money in his account without him knowing it. I think it will work out fine once I sit down and figure out what he is spending. Thanks for asking. Yes, the poem you mentioned is heartbreaking. Last night at church, I was talking to a new church member named Matt. He has a wife and 3 daughters and to look at him, you would think he never had a problem in the world. I am guessing that he is probably 40. Anyway, he was asking me about the girls and I was telling him about Christina cutting herself. He told me that he had been a cutter until he was 30 and he showed me his arms. I had not noticed before but he had deep scars running the length of both forearms. He told me that he used to cut himself to the bone and then go to the vet's office and buy suture kits to sew himself back up. He said he went to church when he was thirty and the pastor was preaching about the demon possesed man who is talked about in the gospels, who would cut himself with stones until Jesus cast the demons out of him. Matt said he though, "Well, if God can do that, he can heal me". He asked the pastor to pray for him and he said he was immediately delivered from it since. He cut himself for 13 years before that. I wanted to cry when he told me. I don't know his whole story, or about what trauma he may have faced in childhood, but I was glad he was open enough to share his story with me because it gave me hope for the girls.

"Hey" my friend, SPOT!

Good to see ya, Floyd!

Thank you for your prayers for Mark and Keith, REV. I got a brief email from Keith letting me know that they arrived safely.

Thanks for the breakfast, NN. Glad you got some rain. We have had plenty of rain this summer and everything is green. Its a nice change for August. Has been hot, though. The heat index was 102 here yesterday.

Yes Asa, talk about sin...hehe. Bruce and I are dropping the kids off with grandma and going out of town for the weekend since our anniversary is on Spetember 2nd. I told him a couple of weeks ago that we need to do something this years since we both forgot about it last year! Not sure what we are going to do but Bruce really needs to get away. He has been working 60 hours a week for weeks now. The new guy they hired to help him should start on Tuesday, though, which is great news (I hope, anyway). Hey Folks

Spot- I'll be there with shoes on.

New Neighbor-Been dry where you are? It's has been so wet here this summer people are calling it Bummer.

Boo-I know you asked the mom's and I'm a Mr. Mom so I'll give it a go. I think Rev had it right, take a breath. Unless, you are totally misrepresenting yourself here (which I don't believe for a second) it's all gonna work out. I'm a pretty big guy and I have two petit little girls and you'd be surprised how often I have to repeat myself. However, I know they're good kids and are gonna good adults, just like I know your kids are. I bet you'd surprised just how much you have taught your kids simply by the example you have set. The same goes for all of those girls you counsel. Even when you have had, what you thought was, an off night, just showing up makes a difference.

M-T Nope, haven't been in Denver, I think if I do head out that way, I'll give it a few days to air out.

Asa-I loved the way Obama swung in on that cable, ala Garth Brooks, very nice. Well, come to think of it he has friends in "Low Places," Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn those lovable terrorist leaders of the Weather Underground (those of us over 45 remember the W.U., also Bubba pardoned two of them), and, Tony Soprano wannabe, Tony Rezko. Yes sir, Barrack is just like you and me.

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65664: Are you up and ready to make breakfast, my friend SPOT? I'm here standing by the griddle and you know I don't like to repeat myself...hehe (couldn't resist).

You porch friends are the cats. I always feel so much better after talking to you. I got a good night's sleep, which always helps. Sterling, I had to smile when you wrote about Kai becoming a teenager (good for you for making her respect you). When Sean was younger he was one of those compliant children and I didn't have to repeat myself very often, but when he hit pre-adolescence, the bargaining began, you know, all the "Please" and "Why" and "Everyone else does it" and I know some of that is related to the OCD (he becomes easily obsessed over things). Now at 13, he is finally beginning to care more about my feelings than what he wants and doesn't carry on about things much, but Erin, is driving me crazy and always has! The other night it was time for her to go to bed, so I told her, ok, go spit your gum out and I will read you a story before bed. I watched her walk to the trash can and (I thought) throw her gum away, then off to the bedroom we went. Well, Bruce came in to tell her goodnight and he said, "Do you have gum in your mouth?"..."No, she said" and then I happened to see something green in there! She had deliberately deceived us and acted like she had thrown her gum away. I went directly to the closet, got a belt and handed it to Bruce. He had a talk with her, spanked her and she cried and said she was sorry after I talked with her about how serious it was to deceive, especially her parents. She seemed genuinely sorry and told me she loved me, then she went to bed without a story. It bothers me because I just can't tolerate lying and she did something similar about a month ago. Some of you may be thinking that spanking is wrong, and I reserve spanking for serious things, like lying, but that is something I just can't have her doing. So, anyway, in some ways its been a good week and it has been very peaceful around here during the day, but Erin is so hyper when she gets home that it is tough to deal with her. I am telling you, she has changed alot in just the past couple of months. She has never been an easy child, but things have gotten tougher. I guess it could be because of Bruce being away so much the past couple of months.

Thanks for the Auh2o, I should not has specified "mom" when we have so many terrific dads on the porch with so much parenting experience. You brought a tear to my eye with your encouragment. It reminded me of a conversation I had with Sean last night. We were watching animal planet together and I was nothing short of dismayed as we were watching the cutest little baby hippo swimming in a river. Well, he wandered to far from his mother and as we were watching, a crocodile got him! We were upset because I didn't think animal planet would show something like that. It was very upsetting to Sean and I could tell he wanted to cry. It opened up an opportunity for us to have a little talk about how sometimes things in life are cruel. I told him that I hope he makes a difference in his world and will live to help others. He said, "Oh, mom, I want to make a big difference." I told him that everyone who serves God and others makes a big diffenrence, sometimes those things go aren't seen in this life, but they will be in the next. My children do seem to have a heart for others, and for that, I am truly thankful.

Thanks for your kind words, too, Mavis....uh, pass the squeezins...I know it's early, but...

Hey it is raining cats and dogs here this morning and talk about thunder!

Better go get my little tornado out of bed and ready for school.

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65665: Good morning Porchsters! Sorry I missed breakfast, I was up & down all night long with my back hurting me & I just couldn't make myself get out of bed at 7:00. At least there was some coffee left. Spot hope you sleep good before you have to go back in to work. At least your snoring won't keep anyone awake, we're already awake. Boo how is Erin this morning? Hope she is better for you today. Jake was just like that when he was little, seemed like that little imp was forever trying me in one way or another. Now he's a big imp & is still pretty good at being trying at times. And for the record, spanking would have been (and was) in order for lying around here too. Rev be careful in your travels, you got your penny too? Where in TN are you going to be?
Big Maude how is Patrick doing in football this year? Did you say he was playing center? Must be a pretty big boy! auh2o thank you for wearing shoes, at least Me-They won't be hollering that you came barefoot on purpose, just to bug him. HA (kidding with you Me-They) Now, I'm gonna put on my Birkenstocks & head out to pick up a dog to be groomed. teehee Guess not getting much sleep brings out a mean streak in me. I'm glad Me-They don't take it personal, figured it was time to give Asa a break & pick on someone else today. Course that has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that Asa is holding a golf club in one hand & MDC's squeezins in the other. HA
I did get a post in my blog last night before going to bed, complete with before & after photos of a dog I groomed yesterday.
Later taters,

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65668: Hey Possum, count your blessings..at least you aren't pregnant...are you?...Just thought I would start all that up again...for fun.

Mavis, sounds like you know what I'm going through! Hope you have a good day and that your back feels better soon. BYW, I think it is probably likely that the problems on the porch kept AntD away, especially since she was attacked in a couple of posts. Hopefully, she will return now that things are better.

Well, Bruce and I have some appointments today...trying to decide on flooring for the house, etc. Talk to you all later...

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65670: Good morning, all. Just got in from work, have cleaned out the pond filters (big surprise) and spent a little time playing with Starr, and reading email. I had an answer from Floyd, regarding the recent moulage and what he did. You'll notice that most of the moulage is still there, though he did mop up the worst parts. I think he feels like the rest of it will eventually drip through the cracks and disappear into the archives with time, and that's best, I think. He can't be expected to clean up such a mess, except where it gets vulgar or profane. Our recent moulage was mostly annoying, and to a great extent, pathetic. So, what I've gotten out of Floyd's response is this: When somebody drops a moulage on the porch, especially a newcomer who doesn't yet know how the porch works, it's probably best to just let it lie there, and not track it all over the porch. The Big Freeze usually works pretty well, but it will take us all sticking to it to make it work. Let the frozen moulage sit long enough, and maybe the spiders will eat it. Thanks, Floyd.

Boo, our kids felt the sting of a switch when they were little, and in the case of lying or other really serious infractions when they were older, they learned just how far their dad could swing a belt. Nobody ever got "beaten", but two or three swings of that doubled belt made them seriously consider the consequences next time temptation came along. Not all children respond to the same form of discipline, though. Erin may be one who will only rebel further against physical punishment. If so, you'll have to figure out what her most cherished possession or privilege is, and deprive her of it.

Well, I need to go get some sleep. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65684: Hey MDC, We are expected to get that storm by Sunday here. I hope you left some rain for us. We need it.

Hey Otis, I'm gonna have a 4 day weekend here. I have some use or lose vacation time and I'll be ding donged if I'm gonna lose it. Are you a Chiefs fan? If so, we need to talk. (jk)

Boo, you know all you can do is your best when it comes to child raising. It sure sounds like to me you are doing that. The only advice I could offer you, and you most likely are already aware of it, is to remember your children are all different and therefore your approach to dealing with them will most likely have to differ. Some parents I think get caught up in the "we will treat our kids the same for fairness sake" game, and I have found that, as nice as that sounds, it's not always the right thing to do. Different personalities require different methods of dealing with. That's where prayer and seeking guidance from the Spirit comes into play. I'm sure you do that and will do fine. Just always try to do the right thing and it will all work out. There's my two cents. Do I get any change back? LOL

Auh2o, I need to study up on McCain's choice but the early things I'm reading on her sure sound impressive, and by golly she's easy on the eyes... and the ears. Sure can't say that about.... others. LOL

N.N. I ain't ever heard you sing, but I know you got looks, you brains, you got morals. I just figured with all that going on for you, you can't sing. I mean no one's got everything, right?

Possum, hug Laci for me. Hope your "hind quarters" start feeling better soon. If I don't quit eating all this corn smothered in butter my quarters are gonna be halves. Hoy!

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65688: Boo, I am not against spanking, though I have very very very very rarely have ever had to give Kai a swat. Sometimes it is enough for them just to know that you WILL.
But I think Romeena is on the right track if that sort of punishment doesn't work; take away something she loves, be it a possession or a special priviledge. And make it clear to her that that is what is going to happen every time she disobeys, and keep taking away things. She will soon put two and two together. Hopefully.
And if that doesn't work, tell her you will sell her to a passing band of gypsies.;)

Well, what does everyone think about McCain's choice for VP?
I think it is a smart move. Risky, but smart.
Smart for two reasons: One, it takes away the Obama teams' charge that McCain is just a same-old, same-old politician. And two, there are already a large number of Hillary supporters who are mad that she didn't get the nomination and don't think much of Obama(I have to agree with them) - and who were even tentatively thinking about voting for McCain, and having a strong woman on the ticket might be helpful.

I hear the Obama camp is already mocking his choice as being "too inexperienced". Hello! Obama came out of nowhere as well and they are all ga-ga about him being "new" and a "fresh start", so I don't think they have much of an argument there. That might be smart reason number 3. ;)

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65689: I DID Spread a little Sunshine, and I feel great about it.

This Waitress was having a really bad day, her boyfriend was being a jerk. I asked her how her day was, and she went on, and on about it.

You know what I did? I sat there, looking at her directly in the eyes, and made sure that she knew that I was listening. To every word.

You see, it wasn't just her boyfriend, but she recently lost 2 family members in Iraq, and this was the breaking point for her.

We talked for a good 10 minutes, and I think that I helped her, just by being an ear! I know that I felt really bad for her loss, but tried to keep a cheerful outlook throughout our talk.

Anyway, go spread some Sunshine! Remember Andy and Barney singing that song to old Ben Weaver?

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65695: Eewww, you better not, Possum...UNCLE!

Glad you are spreading sunshine today, Otis. I am NOT. I have been tired and crabby all day. I am thinking I have a major case of PMS or something....just stay out of my way and pass the squeezins.

I don't know anything about Palin but you can bet I will do some research.

Thanks for the advice Ro, Sterling and Auh2o (or anyone else I may have missed..sorry). I can remember my mom using a switch on me a time or two...maybe that's what I need. Spanking works on Erin but it doesn't seem to work well long-term, so I should probably be taking away priveleges. I think she may be watching too much TV and Bruce mentioned to me today that if you watch alot of those kids shows on Disney or Nickelodean, deceit is depicted often in the kid's sitcoms. He is probably right and I should be more careful about what she is watching.

Today when Bruce and I were in a stone and brick place, looking for stones for the fireplace, I met a really nice woman who had 5 grown daughters (she was the owner of the place) and she was telling me about how hard it was raising those girls and getting them through the teen years, but now they are in their 20's and married and having grandkids and they are so much fun. She said, if you can hold out until they get to be about 25, it's all worth it. haha.

Sterling, funny about the gypsies! When I was little, my dad used to tell me that he bought me from the hot tamale man (who ever that is)!

Better go take a break...Bruce got called into work for an emergency on his day off. He will probably have to work all evening and we were planning to have family night tonight. Oh well.

Guess me and the kids will have a TAGS marathon instead. That's not a bad consolation prize, is it? What would we do without Andy?

Boo

August 29, 2008 - Msg 65696: You(and Bruce) are so right about those kid's sitcoms, Boo. But it is not only deceit they show.
I have forbade Kai from watching all of those smart-aleck Disney and Nick shows like Hannah Montana; Zack and Cody; Drake and Josh. All shows that she loved, and that I thought were pretty funny at times as well, but we noticed that Kai was getting more flippant to us, but mostly to my wife, and I realized that that is how they talk on those shows to their parents and to other kids.
Cartoons I don't mind her watching as much(well, some I do), because I don't think kids identify as much with them as they do to real-life kids.
She has been very obedient and doesn't seem to mind the restrictions at all.
And you know what? Her attitude has gotten alot better since she stopped watching them. So I think that is a good idea to limit them, if not do away with them altogether.

Just wanted to add, you know what she loves to watch now that she can't just click over to Disney or Nick?
Mr. Rogers, and Reading Rainbow. Two shows I can definitely get behind.
In fact, most of the shows she likes now are on PBS, even over Spongebob Squarepants and Fairly Odd Parents, can you believe that?! I'm happy about that as well. :)

Hey Otis, don't think I greeted you before. Nice to see you!
