Well, gotta get busy. Folks will be here in a couple of hours and my groceries are still sitting in bags on the kitchen counter, but at least they're not still at the store! I did get that much done this morning.

Have a wonderful Fourth, everyone! --Romeena

July 04, 2008 - Msg 63810: Hey Porchsters!! Just a note to let you know, I am still alive and well, just busy as a cat's tail in a room full of rocking chairs lately. This is the time of year (besides Christmas) that is so busy for dog groomers, it's hard to get a minute for anything besides work. I need to go read the archives & see what all I have missed, but I am still here. Mr. Neff & I celebrated our 1 year aniiversary on Mon. and today, is my son, Jake's 20th birthday! Yep, he was a firecracker baby, now he's a firecracker young man! Anywho, I'm off to read the archives while I have some time to do so. Hope everyone is doing well & having a safe holiday so far!

Thanks for the sookout at Meyer's lake SPOT. It will at least redeem a little of the day celebrations.
REV- Have a safe trip, remember we'll be praying as you pass by Exit 17 on 81!! Thanks again for the assistance in ministering to the dying.
Ro- I could write a book about "those incidents" with working in a Nursing Home!!!
I talked to Asa's daughter last night, and he has been busy taking care of Mrs. Asa, and working long hard hours. Please continue to pray for them as they travel this "section of road" in life.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!!

July 04, 2008 - Msg 63816: Thank you Boo hard to believe a year has gone by already! I wanted to tell you at least you cleaned the porch instead of cleaning fish! (Don't tell Bruce I said that hehe)
I read most of the archives, but still have more to read so here goes....
Tom Thank you so much for remembering our anniversary! You are a wonderful friend & I count you as one of my many blessings!
Sterling Prayers for you my friend, hope things work out for you & your stress level goes down, that's not good for you!
Visitor and Dud When you Google that Andy Taylor Bed & Breakfast, those folks are the one & only Orville Monroe & Eleanora! They used to post on the porch way back when, bet Romeena remembers them. Nice folks & such a cool job they did on their house.
possum I can understand putting Spot in charge of the grill & Maude in charge of the slaw, but Asa in charge of the FIREWORKS?! Girl, have you lost your ever-lovin mind?? You want the fire department workin overtime? With all that hairspray he has to use on his mullet.. I shudder to even think about it! ;) but Asa you know we still love ya!
MDC Glad to hear Cecile is doing well after her surgery.
Spot glad you had fun camping, wish I could still camp, but who has the time?
Dud Just reading your posts about all that cajun food makes me want to come move in with you so I can eat! I must be one of the only other porchsters (I mean besides you) that loves crawfish/crawdads/LA lobsters whatever you want to call them, I love eating them! They rank right up there with Chicken & Dumplin's & Frog Legs, some of my all time favorite foods! MMMM
Romeena you survive the day with the family? You have more energy than I do lady, that's for sure!
Maude Sorry to hear about Patrick's accident, but sure am glad he wasn't hurt. When I first read "car accident" my heart skipped a beat praying he wasn't hurt! Thank goodness he wasn't.
Me-They Just for the record, I was feeling sorry for you when all that "poopy posting" was going on, Floyd says "Carps are mean" but me thinks sometimes these lady porchsters got a little bit of carp in them at times. teehee
Well, best get off here & get things gathered up & head out to watch my brother set off fireworks at my old homestead, more later!
Love you guys & if I missed anyone, I didn't do it intentionally.

Happy Anniversary, btw Mavis, and Happy Birthday to Jake!

Not doing too much today. Mainly I've just been sitting here at the computer trying to edit some music with a new program I found.
Kai, the wife and the mother-in-law went up to the Pow-Wow. Don't know if they'll be back in time for the fireworks, but it is getting pretty dark so they will probably be shooting them off soon.

hm, don't you know you are supposed to keep them squeezin's away from the goats? They love that stuff!

Happy 4th everyone!
Watched some of the History channel today about early America and learned about the sacrifices the founding fathers made to get this country going. It helps you remember that it wasn't a cakewalk for them, especially when they thought they would probably be hanged should they not be able to hold things together. Makes you appreciate America even more.

July 05, 2008 - Msg 63824: Howdy, all. It's very late, and I'm pretty tired, but just had to stop by and see how everyone's day went. Mine was wonderful. Son and DIL and two grandsons, Eloise and her husband, and DIL's sister, her husband and son, and me. Pretty good crowd, but not so many as to be difficult. We had great burgers, and hotdogs, potato salad, baked beans, and dippy things and it was all delish. Lots of laughter and fun. Son and DIL stayed after the others left, and got into a drawer of old photos, and we spent nearly two hours digging through that drawer. Good times.

And now I can just go to bed, because everything is cleaned up. Eloise did a lot before she left, and my precious DIL helped me finish it up, so the kitchen is clean. Of course I clean as I go, but that only gets the prep stuff out of the way. The meal, after-meal snacking and dessert stuff was still everywhere.

Starr had a wonderful time. Lots of laps to hop into, and of course, her dear friend Bentley was here, so they shared toys, and had big old fake wrestling matches - so cute. Big old goofy Bentley and little delicate Starr, just playing like two children. I love it!

I'll brag a little for Mavis. She sent me a couple of pictures for the album, of two of her dogs taking the Best of Breed ribbon in shows. Very impressive! I'll get them in the album soon.

Be blessed, all. --Romeena

July 05, 2008 - Msg 63825: Sounds like you had a wonderful time Romeena. We had a nice evening with friend, too. THEN, the fun began when we got home. A couple of days ago, I noticed that Erin was scratching her head alot, so I took a look at her scalp to see if she had picked up a case of head lice from somewhere. I didn't see anything suspicious. Tonight I noticed her really scratching so when we got home (and it was 10:30pm), I decided to take another look with a magnifying glass. I took a good look at the nape of her neck and there they were! I had not seen them with the naked eye (getting old, I guess) but I saw them now..I immediately sent Bruce to Walmart for "Rid" shampoo and started stripping beds, vacumming furniture and it was just a frenzy...I had to shampoo Erin and then put that gel in her hair and comb out the nits and dead lice. Let me tell you, it was no easy task. Erin's hair is long and it took quite awhile. Those nasty headlice make me sick! If I catch it I will be so upset. Me and bugs don't mix. I don't know where she picked them up, either. It could have been several places I can think of. I guess I will have to call everyone she has been with. What a pain. Oh well, this too shall pass...

Time to collapse into bed! Love to All,

Boo

July 05, 2008 - Msg 63828: Good morning, everyone! Spot, thanks for breakfast - I'll have my eggs scrambled, thank you, and I'll bring a jar of salsa to share. Gotta have salsa on scrambled eggs. When salsa isn't available, Tabasco will do, but salsa is preferred.

Oh, Boo. Poor Erin, and poor you! Forget trying to figure out where she got them - could have been anywhere. At school would be my first guess, but school has been out too long - you'd have seen them before now - so rule that out this time. I'm sure you were horrified, but thank goodness there are effective treatments. The things seem to be getting more and more prevalent these days - you are definitely not alone.

Well, gotta run. I slept late, and now I'm hungry! However, it's so tempting to sit here at this window and watch all the activity out there. My plumeria tree has bloomed, some of the roses are blooming for the second time, and there's one huge red one, about six inches across, that's just gorgeous. That beautful velvety orange dragonfly is patrolling the pond, nabbing mosquitoes, bless him. He's so big and such a vivid color that I can see him clearly from here, though he's almost fifty feet away. (My lens implants help a lot, too.) The squirrels have come and gone, but will be back in a while to see if anything new has been added to the feeders. The birds present an ever-changing cast of characters, and are such fun to watch. There are three in the birdbath right now, and one has a large fluffy white feather stuck to his head, like a plumed hat! Where on earth did he get that, and why is it stuck to his head? It's bothering him, he's trying to wash it off, but it's not working. Too funny!

Well, be blessed, everyone! --Romeena

July 05, 2008 - Msg 63830: Hey Ro. Thanks for the sympathy. I am still washing blankets, towels and clothes! I don't see any more buggies in Erin's hair but some of the eggs are visible. The instructions said to re-shampoo with the RID in a week, so hopefully that is all it will take. What a mess! I just finished bagging up all of her stuffed animals. The instuctions said to bag them and put them outside for 2 weeks. I have a pretty good idea about where she picked them up. She attended a local VBS the week before I went to camp and I'll bet that is where she got them. I feel bad because we were at friend's last night with 5 little ones (including a 3 month old) and I would hate for them to have to deal with that when they are already overwhelmed. One of their little girls is near Erin's age and they were together, sitting in the same chair, etc. all evening.

Well, think I will take a little break before going to mom's to fix her something for supper. One of the problems that I am seeing is that my parents are becoming very dependant on us for everything and that is hard. They need to be doing as much for themselves as they can and not sitting in a recliner all day and feeling useless, but they are like children and it is so sad. Just like my children, they become fussy and demanding when they don't get what they want.

Hope you all have a wonderful summer Saturday!

July 05, 2008 - Msg 63831: Hello Family:
Just dropping by to say Hi. Thank goodness that you got Asa put out before he had a massive "meltdown". We had a very quiet 4th. Today was another story. By the way, exit 17 on 81 is on the PA side of the porch. That exit is where I work.
Boo: it is VERY important that you keep them as independent as possible. They become use to the attention and decline so rapidly. My prayers are with you as you deal with aging parents. That is a ministry all in itself. One that takes all the strength, endurance and patience the Lord can give you. But it would be nice if you had a little help from the outside. Locally we have an agency called "Comfort Keepers" that will come in a help with their meals, personal care, or just stay for a while to visit.
Better get ready for bed, this is my weekend to work. ~New Neighbor

Only one more load of laundry and it's all done...better go finish it up (it's 8:15pm, central time).

Very quiet around here today, and I'm enjoying every minute of it. It's a Sunday spent the way it was meant to be - resting, relaxing, enjoying those we love (in my case, it's little Toye Starr, as no one else is here) and observing the wonders of God's creation. The view from my window is so pleasant. Hmmm. Maybe that's a title for that blog I keep threatening to set up - "Views from My Window". What do you think?

Be blessed, all. --Romeena

July 06, 2008 - Msg 63845: Thank you, Ro, and thanks to Floyd who keeps things tidy!

Hasn't exactly been a slow day but I can't complain, either. I had nursery duty again at church but it was fun. There were only 4 so we combined the pre-schoolers and toddlers and enjoyed those young'uns.

After lunch I was resting and my sister called and asked me to please come over to mom's and help her clean up another mess. Poor mom can't seem to get her bowels adjusted just right and we aren't sure what to do about it. We had to put her in the shower today to get her clean, mop, wash laundry, all over one episode. My Dad just can't do it. The good news is that mom is definetly getting stronger and is walking with her walker. Hurray! I think in a couple of weeks she will be back to her regular level of activity. I am very, very proud of her for her courage to keep trying. She has been through so much for the past 10 years but she hasn't given up. I remember when her mom gave up after a fall and never got up again, but not my mom. She's a fighter. I was helping her up yesterday and I couldn't help but put my arms around her and give her a big squeeze and told her I love her. As I bathe her, help her with her clothes, even prepare her food, I remember those days not so long ago when she did the same for me. Those wonderful, carefree days of childhood when there was always dinner on the table, a bath and clean pajamas at the end of the day and always mom, looking after our needs. Even though it's not easy, right now I feel blessed to be able to do for her. I know some day I will be very glad that I had the chance, and the funny thing is, I'm not afraid anymore. I know I have mentioned before that I felt afraid to get too close as I saw them getting so old and frail but that has changed. The fear is gone and there remains a little pain in my heart, but it is a kind of sweet pain. Sometimes I cry but it feels very right. Thank you for your prayers for me and my parents. I know they have made a difference.

I have had ASA on my mind since NN's last post. I know things might be tough for him, too, right now. I hope he is able to drop in soon and let us love and encourage him. Prayers for him and Mrs. Asa today.

Well, I'm signing off...

Well, it's dark outside now, guess I'll mosey out to the pond and see if the sentinel light is visible on the UV system. I hope that bulb isn't burned out, but the way the algae was proliferating, I can't help but wonder. I've got it beaten back right now with a chemical, but I just hate doing that. Doesn't seem to bother the fish, though.

July 06, 2008 - Msg 63850: Argh. I couldn't find the sentinel light. It's possible that it's encrusted with algae, though, and just not visible. Tomorrow in daylight I'll clean the area of the light and hope for the best. I really don't want to have to replace that bulb, because they're a bit pricey. Still, nothing lasts forever, and the chemicals aren't cheap either, so if I must replace it, I will.

Are any of you folks on the northern/midwest end of the porch familiar with Sprecher brand sodas? I was watching the food network a few minutes ago, and they did a little feature on the Sprecher brewing company, and how they make cream soda. It looked so good, I came in here and Googled Sprecher, and found them. They are located in lower Wisconsin, and they make more than cream soda. And.... guess what? They ship all over the U.S. - so naturally, I now have a case of their soda on the way to me - a mix of everything, including ginger ale, root beer, a citrus blend, a cherry soda, a cola, a "red" soda that is made with cherry juice and cranberry juice, and of course, cream soda. Quite reasonable - the soda is a dollar a bottle, and with shipping and handling it's about $27, or just over $2 per 16 oz bottle. I'm going to sample them all and share samples with family and friends. Then when I see what I like best, I'll order more. I appreciate that they'll mix flavors in a case shipment. Also, they have a way to order a case to be shipped elsewhere, with a gift notation attached. That might be fun for faraway folks at Christmas, don't you think? They do have retailers in Florida, and while Eloise and I were in Destin we drank a cherry soda in a cafe that was fantastic. I can't remember the name, but it was in a brown bottle like the Sprecher's. I hope it's the same thing.

Well, my Britcoms are on, so guess I'll turn in and watch for a while. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63852: Morning porch, hope all is well this Monday mornng.

Thanks for your encuragement about my sons accident Romeena. I think he learned a valuable lesson and thank goodness there was not another car or person involved. You offered some helpful wisdom on teen age driving and I appreciate that. Thanks to Mavis and Boo as well.

Been sort of a lazy week end at my place. My husbands week end to work, the kids and I attended church and stayed close home. I am trying to be conservative with my driving and trying not to "just go to be going".

I am working at trying to lose about 30 pounds, what a challenge. I have been walking about 2 miles a day and trying to eat less and make healthy choices. It is going to be a long journey I'm afraid.

Anyway on to this virtual lunch (I figure I can cook and eat anything I want on the porch and not gain a pound) HA tuna salad sandwhiches, chips, pickles, little debbie cakes and tea or kool aid to drink. see you at noon.

Prayers and blessings to all.

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63853: Hello everyone and I hope everyone had a blessed 4th of July..

Maude: I am glad your son did not get hurt in the accident. repairs can be made easily to things but not to body parts. As an ins>rance agent for over 9 years, I will agree with ROMEENA that State Farm usually takes care of their claims promptly. Your rates may not go up depending on your company placement but be prepared if they do. Young drivers from 16 to 25 have over 4 times the amount of fatal crashes than other drivers and companies charge accordingly.

MAVIS: Good to have your comments on Cajun food and don't forget the Creole. My mother cooked southern plantation food (Upscale Soul) my whole life so I have that big influence. She wouldn't know how to start to cook crawfish or shrimp.

Me-They: Thank you for your lesson, it is good to have a historian on the Porch.

I did something unusual for the 4th cause I did not have my daughter for the weekend. I cooked a big dinner for my mother and some of her friends on the night of the 3rd. The local American Veterans (Am/Vets) Club is about 1/2 mile away and not being a member, I have never been there. The local paper said they were having a big BBQ cookout and dance for anybody who wanted to attend. No charge for food or entertainment. I called on the 2nd and they said come on down. I volunteered for food service duty and had the best time with all the veterans and their families. Unlike most of the men in my family, I did not serve being a post Viet-Nam eligible boomer and it was great being in the company of alot of patriots. I am definitely going to pull the lever for John McCain with a lot more passion after talking to some of these fine people.

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63854: ROMEENA: Living in Texas for 20 years has turned me into a Salsa Addict also. With my hot sauce, garlic, 10/14 Texas Onion, Pepper and now Salsa addiction I believe I am pushing for an ulcer. One thing about the above mentioned legal vices is their lack of sugar. Some Salsas you do have to watch. One I realy love and it is available here as well as in the Dallas area is TABASCO BRAND CHIPOLTE SALSA. Check it out for those eggs.

BOO: I am going through the same thing with my 83 year old mother. Since she had her at-fault accident and totaled her car she has been so depressed and is declining in health. She can no longer drive and she hates being at home. She forgot to call in her pain medication before the 3rd and she has gone all 3 day weekend in pain. It has been a nightmare and she is having bowel and urinating issues. I am cooking for her and we are lucky to have full-time help and a driver is on call for her, but she still is not happy. Just hang in there and with the help of the Lord things will get better.

SPOT: I used to be a big Braves fan during my Otis' years when the played the replays after mid-night here in La. We would get home from activities and the game would be on. I am a Texas Ranger fan now, but grew up a St.Louis Card fan growing up and listening to Harry Carey, Jack Buck..Etc...Gibson, Flood & Brock ruled during my elementary school years...

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63855: Thank you for the encouraging words, DUD. I'm sorry for what your mom is going through, bless her heart.

Well, I checked Erin's head last night and found a few more lice...I just can't seem to get all of those nits out! I am going to try a home remedy and soak her head in...yep, Me-They...Mayo. It's supposed to suffocate any remaining lice but you have to keep it on for two hours! This is not going to be fun. I think I am going to have to cut some of her hair off, too. It's just too long to deal with right now. I hate to do it, though, but combing out those nits (isn't that a terrible word?) is just awful. Well, wish me luck...

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63859: Hello Porchers: I have a question for you. My mother is being perscribed Oxycotin for back pain. Her regular doctor makes her go into to visit his nurse to get a monthly perscription for the drug. He says this is because of the "Rush Limbaugh" problem with addicts. She is 83 years old, does not drive and gets 60 pills a month. I have never heard of such a practice. She is unable to just call the drug store and have it delivered. She says this is the way it is done in Monroe. You would have to take off work once a month for a doctors visit if you worked a 5 day, daytime shift workweek. Any of you had this problem....The "Dud"

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63860: Hey Dud, has your mom been on the drug just since her accident or is this a really long-term thing? I don't know her circumstances but I think I might look into some alternative treatments for her pain because the use of narcotics (Codeine in this case, I believe), can cause alot of bowel problems, especially in the elderly, and you mentioned she was having some problems...just a thought. I don't know what has already been done for her, though.

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63862: Boo: My mother has chronic back pain with Rheumatoid Arthritis and is looking like she will have to have a hip replacement. I just know I have been on pain killers in the past and the Doctors have just given me a 30 day supply to prevent addiction. I would have to go into their office to see the doctor and to get a re-fill. My point is she has a chronic pain condidtion and has been taking medication from this doctor for many years...I see why a doctor would like to have me justify the medication every 30 days, but not my mother's doctor. I should just be happy that she has good supplemental ins*rance and can pay for the medication, unlike so many families today.....The "Dud"

We have a great Greek community here with a Greek Orthodox Church that has been here for ages. Gyros with Tzatziki Sauce, Greek Moussaka, Spanakopita, Dolmas and Baklava for the Lady Friend. Hello porch family....good to be back on the porch.....Been very busy traveling. I'm in Portland, Maine now. Will be in Maine till the second week of August. Got a lot of concerts scheduled.

I'm going to share a very graghic story and ask you all to pray.
Yesterday I witnessed the most awful accident on I-91 just outside of New York City. Six motorcycles came racing pass me at a speed of aprox 120 - 130 the state troopers said. When the last two bikes cut in front of me they touched each other and lost control. I was traveling 70 mph so it took everything I could to control my motorhome weaving in and out of the bikes and bodies. When I finally got stopped, I ran back to the bodies. The first one was so mangled that I knew he was dead....the second one that I checked was beheaded. I nearly lost it. That scene will forever be in my nind. I then found the young girl passenger and she was in total shock. She had lost her arm. I know we have nurses on this porch and I know they have experenced much worse things but it knocked it for a loop. The state troopers held me up for 4 hours so by the time I left, I didn't get in to Maine until the wee hours of the morning. But I could not sleep even after I get there. I just pray for those poor families.

I know you folks will keep these families in your prayer. I will check back later. You all are so special to me and are in my prayers.
Thank You Jesus for loving us.
-REV.

Wow, Rev, prayers indeed! One never knows when we will pass into eternity. Prayers that you can deal with what you witnessed also.
Homemaker- prayers for you and your situation also! The Lord asks us to give these things to him. When he said his yoke is easy, remember that a "yoke" is always constructed as ONE piece, but with a PAIR of cradles for the necks. So He is there doing most of the work. Hope that helps a bit.
God bless you all.

Barn: You and Helen go to the lake, I'll take care of everything!

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63875: Oh, dear REV! I'm so sorry you had to witness such a terrible thing. May God bless you and give your heart peace from the images that must be in your mind. What an awful thing. Yes, I've seen some terrible things, but nothing like what you saw. A decapitation? Nope, thank God I never saw that. I'm just so very grateful that you managed to avoid any direct involvement. What you saw was bad enough, but I can only imagine what it would have done to you if you had hit one of them with the motorhome. It would have been unavoidable, of course, but still it would haunt you, I know.

Prayers also for homemaker, and for Me-They and anyone else with difficulties at this time. Yes, even you, Boo, as you fight the Battle of the Bugs! (heehee) Sorry - I couldn't resist.

Well, guess I'll go rustle up some grub. I'm still working my way through Friday's leftovers! Good thing I like 'em. I have never minded eating leftovers. I have some bizarre meals around here sometimes, but who cares? Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Those statements sounded kind of funny together, Ro, coming how they did so near to one another. ;)

I won't be eating over at your place any time soon, I don't think. I'll just let the grubs slide on by. ;)

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63878: My prayers going up for all the needs mentioned as well.

Boo - my sis had the same problem with her daughter in getting rid of the lice/nits. She has very thick hair and my sister finally had to take her in and have it trimmed and thinned out considerably.

MDC, you must've been in those squeezin's already if you think next Tuesday is May 15. ; ) Have a safe trip - see you when you get back.

Ro, we have a local frozen custard place that uses Sprecher's root beer with their floats. Never had one, but have heard that they're pretty tasty.

Maude, I'm right there with ya on that weight loss journey. It's not getting any easier as I get older either. Have about 30 or so to lose myself as well.

Well, not much else going on here. Have a good evening everyone.

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63885: Oh REV, I am so sorry. I only witnessed something similar once, 15 years ago and it only involved one unfortunate young man. I had been a nurse for awhile by that time but never experienced anything as awful. Hard to describe how it affects you unless you have experienced it. I couldn't stay alone or sleep alone for months. I was a basket case for awhile. I went to work the day it happened and it was on Thanksgiving Day. I had a hard time functioning and couldn't sleep that night. The strange feelings and thoughts I had really surprised me. This fear just gripped me in the pit of my stomach for awhile and to this day, if I see anything kind of ambulance or even an object in or beside the road, by heart skips a beat and I feel that fear for a second. I will pray for the Lord to bring healing to your mind after such a terrible trauma. Prayers for the people and families involved. Such a senseless tragedy.

Prayers for your situation as well, Homemaker. Keep the faith.

July 07, 2008 - Msg 63887: Very funny, Sterling. Just see if I invite you over for snacks anytime soon!

Spot, according to my definition, smugosity is the condition of being smug. An example of this would be announcing to a porch full of plump people who aren't too thrilled about it but who hate to diet, that you can eat "like a hog" and still fit in the same pants you wore in high school. As I said, you should be slapped, and there are probably at least half a dozen people on this porch who would be happy to join me in that activity. Shame on you! Bad puppy! Bad, ba-ad puppy! (Thanks for the salsa!)

Well, I'm thinking I may turn in early tonight. There are some things I need to do in the yard tomorrow, and maybe if I get at it early I won't end up with a heatstroke! It's just so hot and humid these days.

Where is Tom? He hasn't been around much. We're about due for a poem, I think, and I'm wondering how long that gum wrapper chain has gotten. Check in, my friend!

Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena
