One time she sased me back and I did my normal swat to the rear....WOW!, didn't know it but she didn't have a diaper on....was a shock to my hand and really got her attention. After that....I think I got a lot more respect. Today she still remembers it.

June 12, 2007 - Msg 53356: Boy, I hope Dud wasn't referring to me. I wasn't trying to ignore him, just been very busy today. I know that I answered the last question he asked me about the family from Louisianna.

Had bible study at the drug rehab tonight and had 15 girls, which seemed like alot. It is always such a blessing to be with them for that hour each week. I am very thankful for the opportunity.

Today has been a tough day. Karen's oldest daughter came to see me today and was hinting at needing financial help. I don't know what to do for her exactly. I want to be there for her but she is not responsible with money and will spend it on cigarettes and fast food, I'm afraid. I did get a gas voucher for her from the salvation army and am checking into ways to help without giving her cash. Anyway, that has been on my mind and I was kind of dealing with a couple of other very disturbing things today involving my son. I can't really say more but I am really fighting the temptation to worry. I choose to trust my Lord, who has been so faithful. Thank you all for your many prayers for me and for my family.

Ray, did spanking work with Brenda? I find that with Erin it works for the time but doesn't seem to get lasting results. I know I have to do something that will really make her uncomfortable, like taking away her cartoons. That is torture for her.

Thanks for taking the time to share that advice, Romeena. Makes alot of sense and I'll try it.

Well, I should be going to bed. It's late. God bless you all,

June 13, 2007 - Msg 53360: Wow, I just got spooked! Let me explain...for at least 2 years now, we have been noticing that when we go outside in the morning, the fence gate is open and our Lab is out. Bruce blamed my dad and told me dad was letting her out and just not telling us. Well, several months ago I was up late on the computer and I heard the gate open. I was too chicken to go see who it was in the middle of the night, but sure enough, the next morning the gate was open and the dog was out. Well, it's about 1am here and a few minutes ago, I heard the gate open. The dog didn't bark so I went to look out the door through the peep hole, and the motion sensor light was on near the gate. The dog can't trigger it from the back yard, someone has to walk onto the carport to set it off, so someone was out there. I went and woke up dad and made him go out there with me just now and the gate was open, the dog was out, and nobody in sight! Weird. I guess I will have to set up some kind of camera (kind of like Barney set up in the filling station. haha).

Better get to bed!

Hey Folks

Ray-I was thinking of ya this morning, while I was waiting for the girls to get ready so I could run them to school, I grabbed a quick cup of coffee on the back porch and saw a little fawn walk through the yard.

Dud-The part of New York I live in is nothing like the NY you see in the movies. "Field of Dreams" could have been filmed here. I was telling Asa, a little while back, that some guy on the radio had said that, "If it weren't for NYC New York State would be Utah." One of my joys in life is following, and dabbling, in politics. My beliefs tend to go right of center so, in that regard, living in NY is a bit of a drag. I know God never felt that, He only helps those who help themselves, which is a good thing for a great many people living here. I guess what I mean is this is a great place to live but be prepared to "render onto to Caesar."

Dud-My SIL and BIL lived in the Big Easy for quite some time.

Boo-You may need a watch dog to watch your dog. Seriously, take precautions and be careful.

Spot-Nice of you to have to whole porch spic-and-span for us.

June 13, 2007 - Msg 53368: Hey Dud.....I'm just ok....having a bad bout with nutropeneia.....Basically, I have no white blood cells, and am at a big risk for infection. A simple head cold could put me in the hospital. So, we're not taking chances. I'm not fighting breast cancer for 4 and a half years and let a cold kill me. All the kids moved to grandma's, and we had my "hospital room" and the whole first floor of my house sterilized and bleached.....even the dogs are gone.
Anyway, I'm in isolation now, I need my internet friends. Y'all can keep me company, right?
Millie

June 13, 2007 - Msg 53369: Boo, I'm no spelling bee champ, but I think you had "weird" right the first time. But I may have to get a second opinion on that from one of our more prolific writers.
Btw, since your dog doesn't bark when this happens, do you think it is possible that he is opening the gate himself? Dogs can be pretty crafty when they want to be.

Millie, you take care of yourself. We're all pulling and praying for you.

-Sterling Holobyte

June 13, 2007 - Msg 53370: Well, Sterling, I thought about that possibility, but I don't know why the dog would be opening the gate at about the same time every night and why she never opens it during the day. I have never witnessed her opening it, even when she REALLY wants out. Another curious thing is that a year or so ago, my dad had let her out of the fence during the day and she ran out to the street and was barking at a woman who lives nearby. I was telling the woman that I was having trouble keeping the dog in the fence and she told me that someone keeps letting her dogs out of her fence at night...hmmm, seems we have some strange person who likes to let dogs out at night, roaming the neighborhood.

Dud, Karen's kids are doing well, for the most part. I have not had the opportunity to talk to the youngest in awhile but Karen's son, who is 13 calls me often just to talk. He misses his mom but seems to be handling things in a healthy manner. They just returned from a trip to Disney World and enjoyed it. Her oldest daughter (21) is the one who is struggling the most. I am hoping losing her mom will force her to grow up and do what she needs to do for her 1 yr old daughter. Right now she is married to an alcoholic and her life is a royal mess. She came by yesterday needing money for gas and she told me she had signed up for a class to get her GED. She dropped out of high school when she was about 15, I think. She got in with a rough crowd of kids and never recovered from it. She was in church on Sunday and is talking about having many questions about God and wants to talk to the pastor, so I am hoping she will get on the right track and stay on it.

Hey Millie, sorry you have to be in isolation! Being forced to rest isn't much fun. We are hear for you. Do you have your TAGS dvds with you??

Thanks Auh2o, I'll be careful. I really would like to find out who is doing it. It gives me the creeps to think about someone prowling around while we are asleep.

I can recall asking my Grandma about the resignation and she just dismissed it with a wave of her hand and said he got what he deserved. That was my Grandma quick, to the point, and accurate.

Dud-Out of this bunch running now (so far) I guess I'd pick Fred Thompson (although Tommy wouldn't be bad either). I just hope whomever win's isn't the type to give more of our lives to the government. I am a firm believer in that, the more the government does for you the more it can do to you. They did an EKG that showed some "significant changes" from last year. The doc said that it appears that I had a heart attack some time over the last year. He did an echocardiogram there in the office and put a 24hr monitor on me. I guess the next step is a stress test. When he questioned me about symptoms, I couldn't remember a time that I thought I was having a heart attach but later I remembered a night several months ago in which I had some nausea and broke out in a cold sweat. At first I thought I was having a hot flash but then I remember thinking that maybe it was a heart attack. The symptoms subsided and I didn't think anything more about it until today. Yeesh! June 14, 2007 - Msg 53439: Thanks for the prayers and kind words! I am doing some reading and research on nutritional supplements that might help along with whatever treatment my doc prescribes. LUCY, are you out there? You always have such good advice. I was reading something about immflamation in the body and how it can contribute to the risk of heart attack (one of the reasons doctors prescribe an aspirin a day to reduce risk). I can't take aspirin, though, because even the enteric-coated aspirin kills my stomach. I'm also thinking about staying on the fish oil and adding Coq10. Also heard that vitamin E may play a part in protecting the heart. Anyway, advice would be welcomed. Thanks!

Chores to do....talk to you later.

June 14, 2007 - Msg 53441: Dud - it was probably just a porch sitter - someone who doesn't talk very often. Pay it no mind. . .

Boo - best wishes for you and your doctor's visit. You have certainly had enough on your plate in the last month. Prayers for you!

Spot - wish we had a rain or two here - dry as a lake bed here and we are really needing rain. None in the forecast until Tuesday.

Millie - how are we doing today? We have been walking and trimming goats. When you have around 65 to do - it takes a few days. Made it through part of the jungle yesterday ( my kids' room) - now we are sorting out clothes that do not fit and taking them to Goodwill. Well -the ones minus all the stains - ragbag for those.

Need to get back to the homemaker grindstone~

June 14, 2007 - Msg 53450: Hello Porchers: Grillades, and for breakfast you have to have Grits. Louisiana French Bread has to be from Central Grocery In the French Market in (The Big Easy) it is special like New Yorkers say the water is what makes their Bagels the best.

The origin of grillades has been the subject of many arguments in Bayou Country. It is believed that the dish originated when the country butchers preparing the boucherie sliced thin pieces of fresh pork and pan-fried these with sliced onions. The cooking took place, most feel, in black iron pots over the boucherie fires. The grillades were then eaten over grits or rice throughout the day. Today, grillades and grits are a tradition on many Sunday brunch menus. Most recipes call for veal round pounded lightly and smothered in its natural juices. One of the things I find most interesting about grillades is that it's one of those dishes that has a place on all rungs of the social ladder.
Grillades may be eaten on the sharecroppers breakfast table or on the grand buffets of New Orleans.

INGREDIENTS:
2 medium-size round steaks
1 cup flour
1/4 cup Crisco or bacon drippings
1 cup finely diced onions
1 cup finely diced celery
1/2 cup finely diced bell pepper
1 cup diced tomatoes
1 cup finely sliced green onions
1/4 cup diced garlic
3 cups beef stock
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1/4 cup parsley
salt and cracked black pepper to taste

METHOD:
Cut round steak into three-inch square cubes. Season to taste using salt and cracked black pepper. Dust pieces generously in flour and set aside. In a heavy bottom Dutch oven, heat oil or bacon drippings over medium high heat. Saute round steak until brown on all sides. Add onions, celery, bell pepper, tomatoes, green onions and garlic. Saute until vegetables are wilted, approximately three to five minutes. Add beef stock, bring to a low boil and reduce heat to simmer. Cover Dutch oven and allow grillades to cook slowly for approximately forty-five minutes. Stir occasionally to keep seasonings from scorching. Once tender, add mushrooms and parsley, adjust seasonings if necessary and cook ten additional minutes. Serve over grits as a breakfast item or over rice as an entree.

Take care everyone. The "Dud"

June 14, 2007 - Msg 53451: Millie: You think the Grillades would be a good item at the The Bogart's? I think the name wouldn't go down on the east coast (La. people our strange food) . What is the special on the menu tonite? I am Hungry

The "Dud"

June 14, 2007 - Msg 53452: Homemaker: That Grillades menu would go well with Cabrito> For those that have not tried it is wonderful...The "Dud"

June 14, 2007 - Msg 53453: Hello Dud, answer to your inquiry I'm from the Pennsylvania part of the porch. I come by for short visits(never been one to sit still for very long) and try to keep up with the current events.

June 14, 2007 - Msg 53454: Porchers: If you make it to French Quarter in New Orleans (Market) and amble over to Central Grocery and have one of their world famous Muffaletta Sandwiches. By the way the only places when I go to the (Big Easy, Go Saints) I visit are the 20% of New Orleans that wasn't damaged in Katrina. My sister lived there for over 30 years, most in the Frecn Quarter. If your not Canjun don't ask what is is in this great creation.

Central Grocery is home of the muffuletta, one of New Orleans' great sandwiches. Muffulettas are now available in many restaurants around town (and around the nation), and there are some who like other restaurants' versions better, but we're quite happy dining at the source, for Central Grocery meakes a beauty. A circular loaf of soft Italian bread is sliced horizontally and piled with salami, ham, and provolone, which are in turn topped with a wickedly spicy melange of chopped green and black olives fragrant with anchovies and garlic. The hefty hunk of lunch is quartered and wrapped and sold ready to go … or to unwrap immediately and eat along the counters that have been installed at the back of the store.

Hello porch family.

Spot...still on the road. Will be on the road till August.

Dud...prayers for your mom.

Boo...as MDC said, all the supplements that you mentioned are great and I would surely add coQ10 as you mentioned. I also like to use Red Yeast Rice along with the coQ10. They are synergistic with each other. I've posted this before but if you take vit.E be sure it is d-alpha and not dl-alpha. It would be best also if it is the mixed tocopherols. Praying for you!

Gonna hit the bed. Prayers for all.
-REV.

June 14, 2007 - Msg 53463: Thanks REV, I'll remember that. I am planning a trip to the health food market tomorrow for some supplements. I am going to do a day long detox fast soon, too. I have been feeling down today. I think it really hit me today that I am 44 and had a heart attack. It stinks but I am thankful that it didn't kill me and now I pray I will have the opportunity to prevent it from killing me later. You know the old saying, sometimes you kind of have to hit bottom to realize it's time to do something. I have to trust the Lord and cast my cares on him. I am anxious to find out what is going on, though, and get on with the proper treatment. I kind of feel like a time bomb right now. I keep thinking about my kids and how I want to be around to raise them and see my grandkids. I am feeling guilty for putting everyone through this. I should have taken better care of myself years ago. Guess we all have some regrets, the important thing is that we move on in the Lord and do what we can now, right?

Sure have been alot of folks missing from the porch lately. Guess they are on vacation like Me-They and Romeena. Hope she checks in soon. She is always a comfort to me.

Hey to Barnwannabe, I was just thinking about you and there you are. Hope things are going well with you and your's.

Guess I should turn in. Goodnight Mayberry (if only there really was a Mayberry and we all lived in it, ha),

Boo

June 15, 2007 - Msg 53468: TAGS fans, From the TAGS Web site (WBUTBB).

I remember an interview with Betty Lynn just before "Return to Mayberry" premiered in which she said she was excited to do the movie because she would finally Get a last name when she married Barney. Now, what would have been funny would have been if they had gotten married (as they did) then announced that she was retaining her maiden name, then never tell us what
that was.

June 15, 2007 - Msg 53471: Hey Barnwannabe, nice to see you. How've you been?

Haha, that would have been funny about Thelma Lou's last name, Dud. It would be an ongoing mystery.

Boo, first of all, I hope your tests turn out to be no big deal, and secondly, I hope you heed the hint your body(and/or God) is giving you and start taking care of yourself if you aren't already.
But I really hope it is the first one, and that God is just telling you something.
