April 05, 2007 - Msg 51024: So thankful that Plum came through the surgery...continued prayers for a good outcome.

Thanks for those encouraging words concerning Erin, Me-They. I really appreciate them.

Prayers for Ralph and his wife. Bless their hearts.

The doctor started Erin on Zithromax, so hopefully that will take care of the problem. She doesn't have a fever right now and seems to be feeling better.

I have been busy trying to get an Easter service together for the kids at the drug rehab. They had asked me if I could please come and have a service for them because, otherwise there won't be any kind of church for them on Sunday, and I said I would check with the leader of the ministry. I tried all week to get ahold of her and she finally called me today and told me that she was not able to pull anything together but that I could! Nothing like short notice. Funny thing is, a few minutes later, my friend Kieth (whose wife you prayed for. She died of lung disease several months ago) called and said his Sunday school class is meeting on Sunday after church for dinner and he wondered if I had anything planned. I told him I was trying to put together an Easter service for the drug rehab and he said that his sunday school class could come help me! AND, my brother-in-law who is a fantastic keyboard player and the worship leader at his church offered to help, too. Wow, it sure didn't take the Lord long to answer that need!

Well, it's off to gather up the kids and head off to communion service at church tonight. Ya'll be blessed!

Hello porch family..... it was a great day to cut grass and clean up the yard. Got it all done for Easter weekend.

So glad Plum came through the surgery. Still praying for her. And I will keep the "vicks on the feet" in mind the next time I have a cough.

MDC...AMEN

That's right TOM. One of the things that I love about this porch is the prayer support. It's a honor to pray for these needs.

Spot...how do you think that stranger knows so much? Some of the folks in town think we need to run him off.

Speaking of running off....I better get off the porch for tonight. You all have a great nights rest and know that I'm praying for all of our porch.

April 05, 2007 - Msg 51037: Guess I'll have to run out to HEB and get some VICKS before it closes. I'll let you know if it works, Ro.

Right, MDC, this is a great time of year!

Hey Peggy! Yes, God is amazing. Hope you get some rest. I'm planning to (if the Vicks on Erin's feet works, hehe). Maybe I can even sleep in a little. THAT would be great. Right now Erin is awake and feeling good so she wants to color eggs!

Better go..

Hey Folks

Well, we've had about 7 inches of snow so far and the temperature is 17 degrees....uugh! The Webber is going under again.

Rev-Thanks for the prayers.

Ro-You have a tough little Plum there. Still praying for ya.

PH-How are things with you? If you don't mind my asking. Hope your waters have calmed.

MDC-My 10 year old daughter's favorite holiday is Easter. She told me that Easter makes her happy. I think that's neat. How are things out in the desert?

Anyone heard the song "Moments," by Emerson Drive? I think that's a good one.

auh2o

April 05, 2007 - Msg 51041: Thanks Homemaker, you are very kind.

SPOT....the house isn't coming along fast enough, thanks for asking, though. I don't think we will actually start until summer now, lots of things come up that you don't expect.

7 inches of snow in April, Auh2o!! Hard to imagine. Well, it can't last much longer. That is neat about your 10 year old. I know how she feels. I have never heard the song you mentioned, I don't think.

Well, I'm armed with VICKS and socks, so wish me luck!

Boo

VICKS forever saves the day,
There's nothing it can't do,
Tame a cough or heal the feet
It kills nail fungus, too.

April 05, 2007 - Msg 51042: Well, it's 11pm, and I must say, Erin fell asleep tonight with very little coughing. She is wearing her Vicks and sox...

Boo

April 05, 2007 - Msg 51043: Do you think that Vicks was thought up around world war II, you know, kind of like Spam came along and saved the day back then? It seems like both Spam and Vicks were destined for greatness, so they are kind of cut from the same cloth. Although I would never put them together any other way(yuck!).;)

Kai's face is still recovering from her swing spill. Of course her spunky att*tude came back quicker than her skin will heal. She has been asking to go to the "park by the pond", as she calls the park by the lake here where they have a big playground area, so I took her there today. She really wanted to go on the swings, so I think she really wanted to get back up on that "horse" that threw her, and I am really proud of her for that. Because I know that if this were to have happened a couple years ago, when she was more timid, she would've been deathly afraid of swings for quite a while.
We had a good time, but I had to cut it shorter than she wanted because that wind coming off the lake, combined with these colder temps we've been having, was not comfortable.
Of course, it could be worse. We didn't get 7 inches of snow like auh2o did. Yikes!

Prayers for the Plum, Romeena. Hope she recuperates quickly.

Happy Easter everyone!

April 06, 2007 - Msg 51045: Morning porch. Good Friday is here. Hope you are all well.

Millie, I pray all is well with you and you are doing ok with the latest round of chemo. God bless you dear.

Ro, I am glad Sugarplum came through the operation ok and I continue to pray the biopsy will bring good news.
For Romeena and Sugarplum
All things bright and beautiful.
All creatures great and small.
All things wise and wonderful.
The lord God made them all.

Boo, how is Erin and her cough. I want to try that vicks deal now. I had a cough for 3 months and I still have little fits even now. I hope she is feeling berter.

Auh20, ughhhh 7 inches of snow? Man that's sad to hear. I imagine it will melt off fast at least. I wish we would get some rain here. It's been quite dry and they don't turn on the water for another 2 weeks. My lawn is getting parched.

Here's your paper Spot. I colored a moustache on Hillary's picture. Hope you don't mind. I blacked out a few teeth also. :)

Thanks for the hug homemaker, but where did all these meatballs come from in my pockets? Funny!

Well off to work. You all have a blessed day.

Asa

April 06, 2007 - Msg 51046: Good morning, all. Boo, did the Vicks really work for Erin's cough? Wow! As I said, I hadn't tried it myself, I was just going by what I had read. And Asa, I thought about you when I read it, and wished I had heard of it sooner. If anybody ever needed help, you did, when that cough had you in its grip.
Thank you. I love that quote. In fact, an excerpt is printed on my personal checks - "All creatures great and small, the Lord God made them all." The background picture on the checks is a series of endangered wildlife babies - young seals, wolves, tigers and otters. A Christian fish symbol in one corner completes the checks. People sometimes see the fish symbol and ask what it means, which gives me an opportunity for a brief, gentle witness. Same with the quote or the animal pictures - a chance to speak up for wildlife conservation, or to encourage spay/neuter practices with pets.

I'm waiting for a call from the surgeon with an update on the Plum this morning. As soon as I hear, I'll stop back by. Gotta run, have a lot to do to get things cleaned up around here before she comes home. I don't want her getting an infection from a dirty floor! It's not that dirty, but a good vacuuming won't hurt. I've already washed her little carpet square from the floor of her crate. She loves that crate, naps in it often. I never close the door, she just comes and goes as she pleases.

See you later! --Romeena

April 06, 2007 - Msg 51047: I just spoke with the Plum's surgeon. I can pick her up this afternoon and bring her home. The pathology report won't be back until Monday, but he did tell me that he is "very concerned" that the tumors were malignant. If so, the outlook is grim. There's not much chance that he would have gotten all of it in the surgery. Splenic tumors generally do spread, since the spleen is part of the lymphatic system. If it was malignant, then we've got a problem. Please, folks, pray for my little friend. --Romeena

April 06, 2007 - Msg 51048: Boy, did the Vicks ever work! She fell asleep and I never heard a cough all night. She slept well until 8:15 and so do I, Yipee. Vicks and Romeena save the day (or night)! Now I am rested and ready to tackle the housework. My dear sister, St. Susan is coming over to help out, thankfully. Bruce is off today but our church is doing it's Good Friday tradition of putting men on the cross in front of the church, so Bruce will be on a cross for an hour this morning. It's a tradition the church started as kind of a blessing to the community. The church sits out in a field but the road that passes it is very busy so they put up 3 large crosses near the road and the guys hang on the cross in silence. It gets people's attention and makes them think about what Easter is really about. Funny thing is, recently our Pastor was talking to someone in the community about the church and inviting them to come. The person responded, "Oh, that's the church that crucifies people." Interesting reputation to have in the community, ha.

Hey ASA, I'm glad you wrote that quote for Romeena and Sugar. I came across it a couple of days ago and meant to post it myself but forgot. I started reading Herriot's book "All Creatures Great and Small". I had started it months ago, put it down and just picked it up again. I love it! .....poor old Hillary...have you noticed how much older she looks now and very haggard? She is pushing ahead but looks like she is headed for a breakdown to me. Why don't you get those meatballs out of your pocket and throw your pants on the pile, I'm doing laundry today.

Ya'll have a great one...will be checking in for an update on Sugarplum. Hope Millie checks in soon.

April 06, 2007 - Msg 51052: Hey porch. Lots of prayers continue for Sugarplum and Ro.
Went to the dr this morning for results of the scan. She said everything looks fine. No significant changes to the tumors in my liver or the cancer in my bones since the last scan, three months ago. She said the pain I had could be from the cancer on my ribs....maybe it got inflamed, and the pain felt like it was in my breast and shoulder. It's better now.
Thank you all for your prayers. Especially you, PH, that was lovely. Hope to hear more from you soon. I have been worried about you, too, friend.
Kids get out early today, spring break starts. I'll stop back later.

April 06, 2007 - Msg 51055: Oh, Millie, that's such good news. I pray for you all the time. You know, I think there are several kinds of prayer. There's the beautiful, thoughtfully worded prayer, sort of a formal petition to the Lord. Those are so important. Jesus gave us the command for that kind, in the Model Prayer, commonly called the Lord's Prayer. To me, they're sort of a cross between prayer and worship. Then there are those little momentary prayers, the kind that almost flit through your mind and heart, when you think about someone. When someone has a need and you know about it, it seems like that person pops into your mind frequently, and those little prayers immediately follow. Another kind, maybe what is meant by the admonition to "pray without ceasing", is what happens when something is very heavy on your heart and never seems to leave your mind for a moment. There is no thought-out, worded prayer, it's more like just an open communication line with the Lord. At least that's what it feels like to me. Millie, at different times, my prayers for you go through all of those forms.

Well, I need to get ready to go get my baby. I'm so anxious to get her home, and just hold her for a while. Thanks, friends, for all your concern and prayers. It helps so much. --Romeena

April 06, 2007 - Msg 51056: Spot, I'm making a big pan of buttermilk cornbread to go with that gumbo.
Boo, thanks, and everybody. Ro, I know what you mean about kinds of prayers. The one that pops to my mind a lot every day now is for you and the Plum. Hope she is ok.
Remember the aunt I told y'all about?(Aunt Lorene) She passed on Wednesday, her funeral was today.
I forgot to say, we're going to the beach tommorow. I'll talk to y'all from there. This time we're even closer to Andy! Haha. I'll invite him over for chili dogs.
Got to feed these kids so I can go back to work. Save me some gumbo.

April 06, 2007 - Msg 51062: The Plum is home! The first thing she wanted was her supper. I gave her half what I usually do, and she inhaled it. She has been trotting around the house, little tail plume up over her back and waving - you'd never dream she had major surgery just a little over 24 hours ago. She wears out pretty quick, and goes to her crate for a little nap, but it doesn't last long and she's back up and tending to business. I'm soooo glad to have her back home! Maybe I'll sleep better tonight. That bed seemed twice as big without her warm little self cuddled nearby.
Thank you, all of you, for your prayerful support. Don't stop yet - we still don't have the pathology report back, won't have it until at least Monday. I'm going to trust that it will be benign, and all my baby will have to do is get healed up from the surgery, and all will be well. That's my prayer.

Romeena-I couldn't agree more with your thoughts on pray. After I drop the girls off at school, I say a pray from them while I'm driving home, everyday. That has become one of my favorite times for prayer, it brings me such comfort. Give Plum a scratch behind the ears from me.

Boo & possum-Glad the kids are feeling better!

To auh2o Msg 51040, my girlfriend's health issues have not been resolved yet. One thing about Canada's health care system; although it's mostly free for all citizens, you must wait longer for doctor appointments and tests (unless of course they are emergencies). So far, she is living comfortably.

As for my rehab work, that is giving me premature grey hairs. Not only has progress been slower than expected and costing my money, my general contractor has some health issues as well. I have my next rehab project lined up but won't start it until I get the current project finished and sold.

In the meantime, I keep playing the Ontario Canada 649 and Super 7 lotteries where the winnings are TAX FREE!!!

Millie, great news. Keeping you in my thoughts.

Boo, loved your Vicks poem! You're a caution.

Sterling H., I'm glad to hear that Kai's feeling better. One of mine once took a tumble down a flight of 5 concrete steps onto her face. She lay there crying hysterically and I was terrified of what I'd see when she lifted her head. Well, she did, and ... not a scratch! I couldn't believe my eyes. Sometimes you wonder how they reach adulthood. I know I must have scared my parents to death, and now, having younguns of my own, I know just how they felt.

Glad to hear Laci is better, too.

All these blessings.. just in time for Easter.

Now I'm craving to smell some Vicks. Wonder what causes that...

Ya'll aren't going to believe this but when I put Erin to bed tonight, I didn't put the Vicks on her feet because she had not been coughing today and she didn't want the vicks and socks on (said they made her feet feel ithcy). Well, as soon as she lay down in bed she started coughing fiercly and even threw up from it. Well, I put the Vicks and socks on her, and I am not kidding, not one more cough. She fell asleep after a story and not one cough. Seems kind of wierd. I can't figure out why it works. Some kind of reflexology or something?? Anyway, I'm just glad it does.

That's quite a story Boo, about Erin. Thanks for reporting. I almost can't wait to get a cough again so I can try it now. LOL

Well I hope you all have a blessed Easter and don't eat to much candy. I just love Easter Sunday. I like to get up and watch the sunrise and think about all that transpired those many years ago.

Asa

April 07, 2007 - Msg 51078: I love the Easter sunrise too, Asa, but it doesn't look like I'll see it tomorrow. We've got clouds, rain and cold weather predicted. Oh, well, the sun is shining above those clouds anyway, whether we can see it or not, just as God's love shines on us all, sometimes unseen.

The Plum had a good night, slept in her accustomed place, and therefore, I slept well too. This morning she's up and trotting around, seemingly feeling just fine. I look at that huge incision, just about 40 hours old, and marvel at her resilience. My human patients, at this stage, are still moaning and mashing their call bell at ten-minute intervals, to ask for drugs.

Well, off I go. Much to do today, getting ready for tomorrow. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

April 07, 2007 - Msg 51098: Good late evening, all. I always love this night, every year. I think about what was surely taking place in that tomb, as God prepared to raise Jesus, and I wonder at what moment did Jesus actually stir, and open His eyes, rise up and walk out of that cave? I've always loved the little comment about the napkin that had been over His face. It was folded and placed to one side! Isn't that marvelous? He took time to fold the napkin and lay it aside! Who actually rolled that stone away? Did He? Certainly he had the power to do so. I don't think the Bible tells us. It just says that when the women arrived, the stone was already rolled aside. Can't you just feel the electricity in the air, as the women realized that He wasn't there?

Oh, yes, Easter is a marvelous time, and I've always cherished this night. Yes, I spend much of the time coloring eggs - a habit begun when my children came along, and I followed my mother's example, but the eggs aren't the real focus. They're an excuse to stay up late and contemplate the event, just as they were for my mother. It's an activity that requires little thought, and lets you think and meditate while creating something pretty. I guess I'll always do it, even after the grandkids are grown up. There have been periods when there were no small grandkids, and I still colored eggs. Habit, I guess, but one that I enjoy and cherish, just for the state of mind that sets in while I go about the task.

The Plum is feeling well, eating like a little piglet, and I'm still praying for a report of "benign" on that pathology. God is so good, and He was good to us when he established a loving relationship between people and animals, especially dogs and cats.

Hey, Barnwannabe, you stayed away much too long. Please come around more often. It was good to see you, even if just briefly.

Well, I'm about ready to hit the ironing board. Will be up early for church in the morning. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51099: Good Easter morning all.

Romeena, what beautiful words. You have a real ability to say and write things with style. I cherish being able to come here and get to know you. I am so glad Sugarplum is feeling good and pray that her reports will be good as well.

I had some thoughts I was going to post this morning but Romeena's comments say it all way better than I can. I'll just sum mine up. I know that my Redeemer lives!

Asa

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51100: Good morning, friends. A blessed and beautiful Easter morning to each of you. It's 40 degrees and partly cloudy here in the Dallas area today. A freeze was predicted for last night, but I didn't believe it, because the mesquite trees have leafed out, and they never get caught in a freeze. They know a lot more than the weatherman does. Anyway, it's going to be a pretty day here. I wish the same for each of you - a day of peace and beauty as we commemorate and celebrate the resurrection of our Savior. Peace, and Shalom! --Romeena

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51101: Good morning, Asa. You're very kind, and I appreciate your words. I have to tell you, though, that I admire your ability to say in a few words what takes me a paragraph or two. "I know that my Redeemer lives." What more is there to say?

The Plum is still doing well, excellent appetite, nagging me right now for her breakfast. Thank you, Lord! --Romeena

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51102: Happy Ressurection Day!

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51105: Good Sabbath and Happy Easter to all my porch family. Hope everyone is well today. continued prayers for Millie and the Plum. Been away from the porch for a few days and just checking in. I was off work Thursday and Friday.. spent time with the kids as they were on Spring Break. My husband and I took them and (a friend of each) to
Dollywood on Friday. It was kinda chilly but did not seem to spoil their day. We enjoyed the Festival of Nations being celebrated the next few weeks there. Amazing to see things from Thialand, Switzerland, Peru, China, Mexico. Africa and other countries. I enjoyed Ireland the most and thought of our friend Irishter in seeing the beautiful handiwork of the crafts. Dollywood has something for everyone. Kids go back to school tomorrow and begin their last 6 weeks of this year. Time goes by so fast. My son reminded me he will be a junior next year. He takes the ACT test next Saturday for the first time. Romeena, I have sent updated pictures in the postal mail, a picture of the family and one of just the kids. You can delete the others if you want or need to. I had intended to enclose and extra stamp for you to return them, but sealed the envelope AFTER I saw the extra stamp laying on the table. If you could please end them back, I will send extra stamps next time I send pictures. Crazy me. I will cook EASTER supper for us: glazed ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, sweet corn, slaw, potato salad, rolls and red velvet cake for dessert. assorted soda or sweet tea to drink. come early and we will hide Easter Eggs.!! Happy Easter to you all. Big Maude

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51106:
Happy Easter to all the people of the Front Porch.

Glad to see Millie well enough to go on vacation. You deserve it girl.

Romeena, that is a good sign that Sugarplum has her appetite back. Your devotion to Sugarplum sure does bring back some great memories. My late dog was not just a member of the family, he was my "little brother". Gosh how I miss him. Dogs are such a great gift from God. The best part is how they can love us unconditionally.

Tom, hang in there. The cold and snow will go away soon. Then you will start complaining about how hot it is ... LOL. You should move to Hawaii where the weather remains the same almost all year.

Hey Barnwannabe, glad to see you make an appearance. How is the business going?

One final question. All religious holidays are celebrated on specific days. Why does Easter bounce around from year to year? If they can pinpoint Christmas to a specific day, why not Easter?

from Poor Horatio

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51107: Poor Horatio, Easter Sunday is the first Sunday following the full moon after the first day of Spring. It has been celebrated that way since the sixteenth century.

Hope everyone is enjoying this fine Easter Sunday. Nice and cool on the porch today!

Continued prayers for the Plum and all!

Big Maude, my oldest has always wanted to visit Dollywood. Maybe one of these days...

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51108: Happy Easter gang...Miss Peggy Dollywood is great,we have been a bunch of times...supper will be everyones Easter leftovers!..headed back to work at 6 to keep the Church lights on...prayers...SPOT

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51109: Happy Easter! Wow, I'm eating at Maude's house, yum!

It's rainy and 45 degrees here in South Texas so not many eggs being hunted. This is a real switch for us. It's usually warm and everyone is got the grill going on Easter.

Got to go get ready to eat at sister's then off to the drug rehab. We are having a service at 6pm for the girls and 7:30 for the boys. Expecting about 80, I think. I'm really looking forward to it.

Talk to you later!

Boo

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51110: Good afternoon, all. Just got home from Easter dinner at my friend's house (my DIL's mom) and then they're all coming over here in a little while so the kids can hunt eggs in the back yard. The Plum will have to remain in our bedroom, she doesn't need the excitement of two little grandsons and their dog. All three are sweet, but naturally a bit rowdy, and she's not up to that yet. Usually she gets right in the mix with them.

Poor Horatio, I imagine they could go back on the calendar and determine the date, but I guess we've just always continued to use the relationship to Passover. Passover is linked to the lunar calendar and the first day of Spring, so that same pattern is still followed. The crucifixion and subsequent resurrection occurred during the Feast of the Passover, which commemorates the time when the Jews were spared from the death angel's work during the time that God was convincing Pharaoh to let the Jews go. He told the Jews to sacrifice a lamb in each household, and put the blood on the doorpost of the home, and the death angel would "pass over" that house. How symbolic is that?? Amazing how it all ties in, isn't it? Do you suppose there was a plan? Ha! But of course, you know all this, and I understand your question. Why not just settle on a date, especially since we really could pinpoint the actual date? I agree with that to a degree, but I do like maintaining the connection with Passover. Jesus was a Jew, an observant Jew, after all.

Well, the family will arrive in a few minutes, guess I'd better go clean my strawberries and get a little sugar on them, if we're to have them over ice cream later. Got a big pot of homemade soup warming on the stove, and will make some cornbread. Guess we'll do okay. If anybody is in the area, come on by, there's plenty!

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Millie

April 08, 2007 - Msg 51115: Romeena, you probably already know this but some may not. Not only was Christ crucified during passover but there were actually 3 feasts going on at once; The Feast of Unleavened Bread and The Feast of First Fruits. Jesus was actually resurrected on the Feast of First Fruits (very fitting, considering he is the "first fruits" of those who are to be resurrected). Also, during the time that Jesus was in the tomb, the Feast of Unleavened Bread was being kept and there are some really interesting symbols relating to Christ in that particular feast. Unleavened bread (symbolic of Christ's body) did not contain leaven (which the bible uses to describe sin..."beware the leaven of the Pharisees", as Jesus said), and the unleavened bread was made much like the masa crackers you find in the store today. When it was baked it was pierced with holes (mush as Christ's body was pierced) and the bread was symbolically put in a bag and hidden for a time and then brought forth again...sounds like the resurrection. Anyway, just thought you might find that interesting if you didn't already know it.

We had a wonderful time at the drug rehab tonight. We ended up conducting short, 30 minute services for 3 different groups (two good-sized groups of girls and a small group of the boys). It was a blessed time, very sweet. In the boy's service, my friend Keith spoke and gave testimony about how God is helping him through his grief now that Linda has died. It was wonderful and boys really seemed to respond to it. Four of them wanted to pray to receive Jesus and they seemed very sincere. I have to say it has been my best Easter ever. The Lord blessed my socks off. Hope you all have a good one, too.

Millie, sounds like lots of fun. I'm so glad you are relaxing with the family!

Well, got a few emails to tend to then off to a warm bed to read some more James Herriot. Asa, I just finished the chapter with the woman whose dog goes "flop bott" and "crackerdog"! I love it...
