June 09, 2006 - Msg 38972: Good evening, everyone. Warren, there was an Ollie, but he hasn't been around in many, many moons. As for Barney, we did have a Barney as I recall, but I always sort of secretly felt that Barney and Andy should be kept out of the name pool. Certainly I never said anything while Barney was posting, and it's only my opinion anyway, but it just seems like those names should be special. I sort of feel the same about Aunt Bee and Opie, but especially Barney and Andy.

Possum, Boo has given you good advice. Go see your cardiologist. Just do it.

Hazel, I'm so sorry about Molly. It really hurts to lost a pet. I can't imagine my life without the Plum. Their little lives are so short, but they manage to give us so much while they're here.

I wish all of you could have known my late husband. I was 17, he was 19 when we met, on a blind date. The twist was, he was supposed to be my girlfriend's date, but he and I paired up immediately, and left the other couple just looking at each other. It was love at first sight, literally. I told my girlfriend on the way home that I was going to marry him, and eight months later, I did, and I never looked back. Back to Lucy's earlier question - while I might change a few things about my life over the years, marrying him would not be one of them. He was definitely one of the good guys.

Boo, I had a similar experience in a parking lot about a year ago, and I had just gotten my new truck with OnStar phone. I pulled up behind her car and called the cops. Not very tags of me, or maybe it was, but she was blocked in and yelling til the squad car pulled up, then she was this different person, but they didnt buy it. I told them I that i would be calling cps and I got badge numbers, names etc. Never heard anything more after I called, but hopefully things improved. That is why that Oprah show really got to me. Good for you calling!
Well, on to more pleasant things. Good one about the golden arn story.
Well, Have a good evening everyone!

June 09, 2006 - Msg 38978: Evenin' Porch,
Did everyone have a good day? Bryson, his friend, and I went and saw the movie Cars. It was actually very clean and very entertaining. I wasn't bored at all and the boys really got a kick out of the "boy stuff". I really recommend it for everyone. Its so hard to find clean movies that everyone would love. Bryson wanted to see Over the Hedge, but I remembered Boo's comment so we'll wait until a rental.
I forget who said its cold in Chicago, but no I didn't pack hubby's jacket. He's originally from Ohio, so he's pretty good with cold weather. Although when we talk about moving up North (we're in Atlanta) we just shiver. Thanks for letting me know! That was nice!
Possum- I agree that you should see a cardiologist. You can't mess around with your ticker!
Boo- I am proud of you for standing up and calling CPS. Has anything come of it since you last posted? To me, the bad thing about CPS is they notify the parent of their upcoming visit so they have time to clean themselves up. That happened with hubby's ex. We called CPS because stepchildren were alone when they were 8&6 and they called the Mother to let them know they were coming!
Asa- I saw your daughter and of course Maraiah's pictures, but where's yours?
Me-They- Have a safe trip! Hope Mrs. Me-They doesn't go into early labor.
Tom & Gizmo- We haven't heard from y'all in awhile.
Big Maude- Where was your picture? You only have your beautiful children. I have 2 rolls of film to develop and as soon as I do then I'll send some of us to Romeena also.
Romeena- I don't have any regrets in regards to my husband. Only 2 with my children. I still feel like I should've saved my stillborn. The doctor's wouldn't take him, but I knew something was wrong. Then he died. And, getting pregnant out of wedlock was a huge ordeal with my family. But, I was wondering if its okay to feel regretful. Also, I'm always looking for encouragement for my spouse. I don't want to make the same mistakes someone else did and I won't if I know what they did that they regret. Wow, run-on sentence, sorry. Didn't Andy have regrets over Sharon Despain?
I'm beat. I'll check in the morning. Have a great weekend!
Blessings,
~Lucy Matthews

June 10, 2006 - Msg 38992: Possum, I forgot to tell you yesterday that pregnancy can cause tachycardia (no kidding!) HAHAHA Sorry, just HAD to say it!

Right Horatio, now I remember that it was Vanessa Williams but I can't shake the feeling that I should remember something more about it. It's like an emotion I felt when I heard the song (maybe its just all the therapy I am going through. HA!). Thanks for the posting advice.

Lucy, after your baby was stillborn, did the dr tell you what had happened? I am wondering if it was a cord accident or something else. It is interesting that you felt something was wrong and I am wondering if you felt an unusual amount of movement or lack of movement at any point? If you feel comfortable talking about it, that is. Lucy, I think there is sometimes a fine line between guilt, shame and regret. You may be dealing with some of each. Guilt says, "I did something wrong and feel bad about it", shame says, "I AM bad because I did something wrong" and regret says, "I should have done something differently and will learn from my mistake if I have another chance". I think God would want to heal your pain concerning your stillborn baby and give you peace about the decisions you have made in the past because they are things you can't change. He is a God of great mercy and understanding and the bible says He is near to the brokenhearted. He doesn't want you to continue to grieve over what "might have been" because He wants you to live the life you have now. Some things we just don't have the answers to but remember as His child He will work out all things for your good in time. You might also be having some issues with shame if your family made a big deal out of your being pregnant and not married. You need to realize that you are a child of God, made in his image and likeness...that was God's choice, He made that decision and we can't make ourselves something else. You are not a bad person because you sinned, not if Jesus is your saviour. Your sins were paid in full. If I could make a suggestion, I would say pray first of all and know that what we confess to God, he forgives...."as far as the east is from the west, so far has he separated our sins from us", then get a journal and start writing. Don't try to compose what you are going to write, just let yourself write whatever is in your mind at the time. You will be surprised what you will find out about yourself. It will help you to understand where you are having problems that you need to deal with and will relieve alot of stress (I know this from experience). Maybe its time for you, like me, to get to know yourself. Remember we love you.

Ro, I feel like I know your husband after all the wonderful things you have shared with us. There is something I have been wanting to ask you but hesitate because I don't know if you would feel comfortable about it, but I would sure like to see a picture of him with you in your photo album. It would be an honor...

June 10, 2006 - Msg 38993: After finishing Season Six of The Andy Griffith Show and going back and watching the B&W episode's , I never noticed how sad and stupid "The Return Of Barney Fife" episode was on Season Six.

Barney and Thelma Lu were so close and Barney return's and find's out she's married? NO. I don't like it.

It would have been better if Barney and Thelma Lu got back together and she moved to Raliegh with him. A Barney return episode should be a happy fun one , not a sad one.

However "The Legend Of Barney Fife" is much better and I did enjoy Season Six very much! I am brave enough to say that it is of my Top Four season's!

Since we all have the same interest in TAGS, can these forums be consolidated into just one forum? Wouldn't it be less costly for the hosts? June 10, 2006 - Msg 39004: To homemaker, sorry to hear about your pet dog passing a year ago. It's easy to develop such a close relationship that you grieve for them like you would for any other human member of your family. Adult kittens are too independent for me. I prefer dogs.

To buckeye (and Floyd), I understand how there will be personal preferrences to deal with if forums are consolidated.
I got the idea when I went over to The Mayberry Gossip Club Bulletin Board and saw the last message Floyd posted. He said "I think I'm gonna close it down and see about moving our conversations to the Mayberry Gossip Club Forum." However, even that forum is not very active. I wonder if any of the posters there even know about the very active Front Porch? Oh well.

June 10, 2006 - Msg 39005: MDC, if you go to the BOOM channel on cable or dish, you can catch a lot of the old cartoons. In the wee hours of the morning, you can even get an old Speedy Gonzales cartoon, but not often. The adorable little Speedy is not considered politically correct anymore, but BOOM pushes the envelope now and then. I'm surprised there's not an anti-coyote defamation society around, to outlaw the roadrunner cartoons. It's getting ridiculous. Remember when they outlawed the Frito Bandito commercials? Most of my Hispanic friends were highly offended, he was their hero and he was taken away! So silly. Anyway, BOOM is a good place to find some of the good old cartoons. Some old Tom and Jerry, Sylvester and Tweety - you know, the good stuff!

I'm watching a group of birds in my birdbath right now, and I don't know what they are. They look a lot like starlings, but they're a fawn color, just a tad slimmer than a starling, and are very pretty. There's a whole flock of them, and I've never seen them before. I'll have to pull up my bird ID program and see if I can figure them out. One thing for sure, my trees sure do seem nice and full.

The lotus is closing up. I'll be watching to see whether it opens again in the morning. How that saucer-sized flower manages to remain upright on that pencil-slim stalk, I don't know, but it does, even in today's fairly strong winds.

June 11, 2006 - Msg 39035: Good morning, all! Beautiful Sabbath morning here in Texas. I'm looking forward to church, as always. Our pastor always brings such a wonderful sermon, he's never as dry as dust, believe me!

Mavis, you're right, that's a Bible Dale was carrying, and a very special one. The man who was my pastor all my life until I was 15, and who had been my family's pastor for 20 years before that, came out of retirement to perform our wedding. Before I was born, my grandmother had saved her pennies from her tiny pension and had bought him that Bible as a gift. It was one he had admired but wouldn't buy for himself. She gave it to him, and he preached from that Bible all the years that I can remember. Imagine my surprise and joy when, at the end of our ceremony, he presented that Bible to us. I can still remember his words: "Lanni, this Bible was given to me by your grandmother, known to all as Aunt Maude. Personally, I have treasured this book. It's price, to me, is above rubies. And now, I want to give it to the two of you, to be cherished by you as it has been by me." And he handed it to Dale. I still have it, of course. It is marked from Genesis to Revelation with his sermon notes, in his fine old-fashioned script, and there is not enough money in this world to buy that Bible from me. I loved my grandmother, I loved that pastor, and I love that Bible.

The expression you see on Dale's face in the anniversary picture is what you would see most of the time when he looked at me. Loving, indulgent, slightly amused. Why God chose me to be so blessed, I'll never know. I do believe that some marriages are made in Heaven, and ours was one.

Millie, if you are out there...when you were a bartender, did you have to dance on the bar like those coyote girls?

Hope Mavis is okay as she is close to where the storms are supposed to be. Thanks for breakfast SPOT. You are a jewell of a cook. Romenna, You are an example to all of us as to what a good marriage can and should be as well as your life experiences and wisdom being helpful to us in more ways that you know. Thanks for being so open with us and sharing. Well, guess I will move along for now. Will check in after while. Big Maude

June 11, 2006 - Msg 39043: Hey Mavis, Glad you are okay. We just had a pretty good rain shower over here. no thunder just steady rain, maybe it will cool down some of the heat and not be so humid. Hey SPOT, how about if I grill some chicken, bake some potatoes, slice tomoates and fix some baked beans for supper? thought you could use a break. dessert will be ice cream sundaes. Maybe you could bring some of that good ole sweet tea you make. See you guys at supper. Big Maude

June 11, 2006 - Msg 39044: Its HOT here too Maude! In the 90's but feels like 100's with the high humidity. Summer here just kills me.

Went out to eat Mexican food with my 2 sis-in-laws and had a nice time...too full, though. I love Mexican food with a passion.

Well, next week we will have the land actually completely cleared and mulched and hopefully meet for the final time with the architect. When the plans are complete, we start gathering the bids...the ball is rolling but kind of slowly. Bruce staked and roped off the position of the house this weekend so we would know exactly which trees needed to go, so I sat on my imaginary front porch under a skinny little oak tree and pretended to be sitting on a real porch. We are going to have a nice breeze out there and you should hear the lovely sound of the wind through all those trees. I can't wait until I can send a picture to RO of the finished house for all of you to see. I'll take one with me sitting on the front porch on my porch swing for ya.

RO, that is such a sweet story about the bible. What a priceless gift he gave to you!

Think I will kick back in the recliner and close one eye. Later!

With Barney still on the show they didnt need two goof's. Nothing against Barney , he isnt a goof , but you know what I mean!

Also Gomer had the advantage with the writer's for the show. Goober was stuck from 65-68.

June 11, 2006 - Msg 39060: Cocoa and cinnamon graham crackers...now THAT'S comfort food to me.

Warren, its funny that you said Goober is more realistic because I remember once a long time ago someone here on the porch said that everyone has a Goober in his family somewhere. I think it's true! haha Thanks for you kind words about all of us. We like you, too.

Goodnight to MAVIS, hope she can get some sleep with all the thunder and barking. I am lucky neither of my dogs barks at storms.

Yes MDC, it would be nice if you could all build that house for me, wouldn't it? Unfortunately it isn't like the old days when they had "Barn Raisings" and such. My mom talks about what that was like. You know, I met an elderly woman in church that turned 96 today. She looked pretty good, too. She was in a wheelchair but seemed just as clear-headed as can be. When I told her happy birthday, she took both of my hands in hers and they were the softest, sweetest hands I ever felt. I can still feel them. What an honor it was for me. I think about all the ways those hands of hers have served and loved over the years.

Guess I'll say goodnight with that thought. Sweet Dreams,

Boo

June 12, 2006 - Msg 39076: Boo, since you asked about my teenager, Sean, and how he came to be "ours", I'll tell you the story....My husband and I were friends for several years before we dated. We knew this girl from high school who we used to see around. She was always drunk, had a criminal for a boyfriend....you get the picture. Well, the boyfriend got her pregnant and started to beat her up regularly. Steve, my husband, lived in town with a bunch of guys, students, sharing a house. Well, she would show up on his doorstep in the middle of the night, beaten up, black eyes, swollen lip, and pregnant out to there. And he would let her sleep on the couch, hide out from him, and then she'd go right back to him. When it came time for Sean to be born, Steve worried about a helpless baby with HER for a mom, so he used to go check on Sean, when he was bigger he would take him out for ice cream or to the baseball game....Anyway, when Steve and I started dating, I knew about the whole situation. About that time, Sean and his mom showed up again with no place to go, and Steve took him in. When we got married, Sean and his Mom came to live with us. Eventually, we had to throw her out, but she left Sean with us, and visited on weekends. So for the next few years, Sean would go back to live with his mom until she went to jail, or gotthrown into rehab, or whatever, and then he would live with us, sometimes a few months, twice for a couple of years. Finally, when he was ready for high school, he asked if he could come here to live permanantly. (This happened during my initial cancer diagnosis and treatment.) His mom agreed to it, his dad gave permission from state prison, and a judge gave us full legal guardianship and custody.
Sean is a really special kid.....he's been through so much. Now,(just recently) he looks and acts so much like a man, I get weepy when I see him all dressed up for church or a date. On Mother's day he told me I was his real Mom.
Sorry to get so sappy telling this story, but I took a lot of heat for taking him in....like I was slighting my other 3 kids....but I'm trying to teach them a bigger lesson, you know?
Oh, well. Thanks, Boo for asking about Sean.
