November 04, 2005 - Msg 31296: For Ky girl and Homemaker

It was raining hard in Frisco
I needed one more fare to make my night
A lady uphead waved and flagged me down
She got in at the light

I said where you going to my lady blue
It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain
She just looked out the window
And said ..... ...... lane

Something about her was familiar
I could swear I seen her face before
she said I'm sure you're mistaking
And she didn't say anything more

It took while but she looked in the mirror
And she glanced at the licenese for my name
A smile seemed to come to her slowly
But it was a sad smile just the same

And she said how are you Harry
And I said how are you Sue
Thru the to many miles and the too little smiles
I still rememeber you

You see she was gonna be an actress
And I was gonna learn to fly
She took off to find the footlights
I took off to find the sky......

Harry Chaphin and Taxi! His best work in my humble opinion.
(Ha! And you thought I couldn't sing! Next time I'll sing Accapella!)

November 04, 2005 - Msg 31297: yes,Mdc,that is the one I was thinking of, I also think it is his best work.Another one I like, that I don't know the name of the singer,is"another auld lang syne"[hope I spelled that right].Anyone remember that one?Speaking of strange outfits for a band, remember the Bay City Rollers, and the plaid outfits?Gotta close, need to run to the store real quick,I'll stop by later-ky girl

November 04, 2005 - Msg 31299: Hey, very good singin' there ASA. Yes, KY GIRL, I remember thay Auld Lang Syne song...very sad. I don't remember who sang it, though. He was probably one of those, "one hit wonders".

PAPPA BEAR, Oh my Gosh! That poem about "just a minute" was just for me. Thanks for sharing it. Yesterday I was feeling pretty guilty for being impatient with my elderly mom. I get so busy taking care of the kids and my parents that I don't take the time to just listen or sit and talk to her and sometimes I get irritated when she asks for things. Last night before bed, she started to cry and she said to me, "I'm so tired." I asked her what she meant and she said, "I'm so tired of hurting. I'm trying my best". Its been 6 years since her stroke and she went from being a very active woman to wanting to do nothing but sit in a chair all day. Sometimes I don't know what's wrong with me. Why can't I see that she needs me for more that just taking care of the house? How could I be so unfeeling toward my own mother? I haven't said this to anyone else but I feel like I need to say it to somebody. It sounds so selfish but I think if I tell someone maybe I can make a change. I think I hold back being close to her because I am afraid of being emotionally attached. I am afraid of the pain of losing her and when I see how she looks, so frail, especially when I look at her crippled hands and remember my childhood. She had such lovely, soft hands and they did so much for me. When I see them now it reminds me of her mortality and my own. Please pray for me. I have made a decision to do what's hard just because its right. I have to be the strong one and I know she deserves so much more. I don't think I will have her with much longer so its so important to make the most of the time now. Anyway, thanks again Pappa Bear, I am really going to try to make a change.

Boo, I KNOW EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL. That is me every single day. I just got back from my mom's nursing home, and even tho i visit about 4 to 5 times a week,I always feel guilty and I always see this lady who was so vibrant, just sitting there and it tears me up inside. If it wasnt for my faith, which BTW, has included yelling at God, I dont know where Id be. I have read James Dobson's book "When God doesnt Make Sense"
and that helped tremendously. Hang in there dear and remember that were all praying for you!

November 04, 2005 - Msg 31303: Another Auld Lang Syne (Dan Fogelberg)

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling christmas eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve

She didn’t recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried.

We took her groceries to the checkout stand
The food was totalled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation dragged.

We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn’t find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

She said she’d married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didn’t like to lie.

I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue
But in those eyes I wasn’t sure if I saw
Doubt or grat-i-tude.

She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was heck (not really heck but Miss Crump won't let me use the word Dan Fogelberg used~).

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence
Another ’auld lang syne’...

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away.

Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain --

November 04, 2005 - Msg 31304: Hi Porchters.
Any computer experts ut there who can assist me? I am realising that when the porch is getting full, closer to needing a sweep, my computer seems to take a long time to load up when I get on here. And then finally it will stop and give me a time has expired message or something loke that. After a sweep, I can pop right on here with no problems. Any thoughts?
Daniel, I saw that about our beloved Daphne passing away. Very sad indeed. We will miss her.

Boo, my Dad passed away this past Febuary after several years of struggling with old age. What you have expressed is exactly what I had to deal with also. I know how hard it is. You hate to see a parent struggle so, and yet feel guilty because you struggle with it. It doesn't help when they get a little onery sometimes as he would. It is very tough, but lean on your faith and He will get you through it.
The one thing I did not want to have happen was to be there right with him when he died. I did not think I could handle it. It turned out though that I was indeed very much with him when he went through the vail, and I am so grateful I was, because it was a very spiritual and peaceful period. It got me through the funeral and made me come to the realization that death is not an enemy, but a transition, and sometimes a blessing. You have my prayers as you go through the challanges you face. And it probably is good for you to talk about it. So feel free.

Possum, did you get yer fur cleaned? Sorry about the mess. It was them stinking sticky cookies of homemaker that did it! :)

Next week I'll seranade you with some Gordon Lightfoot songs. I dig him!

I know I bring this up every year, but any Mannhiem Steamroller fans here? I'll confess to playing one of their Christmas c.d.'s today. Dang I love their music.

A relative gave me one of their Christmas CD's a couple of years ago and it was very good. KY GIRL, M. Steamroller is instrumental..no word that I have ever heard just various instruments, some unconventional.

Thank you for your very encouraging words MDC and ASA. Somehow it helps to know someone understands. MDC, maybe we should realize that our feelings are normal and give up the guilt. It could just be our heart's way of starting to let go. ASA, relating your experience with your father's death brings me alot of comfort, thanks. God bless you both for your openness.

Better face the day...Hubby is watching the kids and giving me the day off. WhooWee! I think I will go to the Goodwill thrift store(its half-of day) and get my husband's Christmas gift since he has me on this danged budget (just kidding, of course). The Country Peddler's show is town this weekend and I want to go to that and try hard not to spend much. Ya'll have a great Saturday!

November 06, 2005 - Msg 31347: Hi everybody!

KY GIRL, keep us up to date where your son is concerned. I want to remember him in my prayers if he goes to Iraq, and I'm sure the rest of the porch would, too.

Yes, my day off was nice. I found a brand new pair of blue jeans just my size at the thrift store. The tags were still on them and they were really pricey. I got them for 3.00! Yipee, they were exactly what I was looking for. I also got a nice artificial tree to put in my Sunday School classroom. Can't wait to put it up and let the kids start decorating it. We have the grooviest classroom around. I have a big cabana set up in the room with colored laterns on it and some flamingo lights. The kids brought their own lawn chairs and I made some big pillows with some wild, 60's-looking material to throw on the floor. We have alot of fun most Sundays.

KY GIRL, what you said about your relatives made me smile. My mom's family is from West Virginia and they were coal miners....real, honest to goodness Hillbillies. You know the movie Coal Miners Daughter? That's how mom's family was, for sure! I have heard my mom talk about, this holler or that holler and wondered what in the heck a holler was. Some of my relatives were kind of backwards, to put it nicely. None has made the National Enquirer, though, but I can think of a couple right off that should have been put in jail. My mom had a younger brother that passed away about a month ago and back in about 1960 he was visiting and molested one of my brothers. When my dad found out, he waited until my mom was asleep then he told mom's brother to get his things and he drove him to the train station. He said to him, "For my wife's sake I won't kill you but if I ever see you here again, I promise I will". Back then people kept quiet about things but my dad has always lived with the guilt of knowing he should have turned him in. I believe my uncle went on to do the same to other young boys without any opposition. I was too young at the time to do anything about it but I saw how my mom's family chose to pretend it wasn't happening and let it go on. Really sad for the young victims. I think the worst thing a person can do besides victimizing a child is to let it happen without intervening. I think mom's whole family was in some kind of sick denial on that one. Ok, enough, time to lighten the subject....GOOBER, when you said you got your wife a trip to the Bahamas, besides, "Wanna buy a ship in a bottle?", I was thinking of that movie Christmas With the Kranks. Did you see that one? It starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen as a couple who sends their only dauther off on a trip to Europe and to college and they decide to take a cruise and go to the Bahamas, I think. It is just the funniest and cutest movie and its coming out on DVD on Nov 8. By all means see it if you haven't yet. Its a good one.

I'm getting sleepy so I think I'll turn in. Talk to you tommorrow!

November 08, 2005 - Msg 31376: Greetings Porchsters!

Sorry I have been away so long. My computer was ill, and I couldn't get on-line for quite a while. One day, I was typing out some papers on the old puter, and my 8 year old Opie insisted I try to go on-line. I told him it's no use, it's still broken and I didn't "call the man" yet. He insisted that I try going on-line and he added, "I PRAYED mom, now just do it!" (He's can be very forceful at times!) So, just to get him off my back I tried it, and lo and behold, it goes right to the information super-highway! The faith of a child, right!?

It sure is beautiful in this part of the mid-west today! There is still a lot of color on the trees, although the windstorms of the weekend did blow a lot of the leaves down. Kind of late this year to have leaves on the trees anyway!

I haven't had much of a chance to go through all the archives, so I am sorry if I missed anything. Here's wishing one and all a wonderful Mayberry kind of day!

Way to go ASA- Possum youre the cats!(is that possible?)ha
Pappa, did you ever drink Tang(the drink of the astonauts) Bosco, or Ovaltine?? I sure drank my fill of all three as a young un.
Ever go to the sat. Matinee movie, see an episode of Discmen from Mars first, which would leave you hanging til the next Sat. Our Orphium Theater in downtown Phx was just restored to its original ornate splendor! It is just as I remember it!
We would also always have a stage show first by a local kids show team, then the serial, then a cartoon, then a B movie , all for 25 cents or 12 cork-lined bottle caps! ha We'd park our bikes outside,no locks, and they'd be there when we came out.
I'll try the western site today!
