October 08, 2005 - Msg 30793: Howdy, everyone. Well, I have news. Big news. BIG news. Oh, this is BIG! TOM will be back online soon. He has worked it out for himself, and at this point, it appears he won't need any help from us. Thank you, thank you - to all who were planning to assist. You're just terrific, and I'm proud to call you my friends. If things change, he'll let me know, and I'll let you know, but right now, it appears that he has things under control.

Irishter, you make me blush! I'm glad you're enjoying the journal. It was a joy to live the experience, and almost as much fun to write about it.

Have a wonderful Sabbath tomorrow, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Hope evryone is having a good Sabbath. Woke up to frost and fog this morning on my porch. Brrrr!
Ro, that's great news about Tom. Look forward to seeing his posts. But you think the other posts here were not fom him?
Was watching the talking heads this morning and saw a lot of clips of the President's pick for the Supreme Court (Harriet Miers). She looks a lot like Mother Sprauge, don't you think?
Well better go watch some football.

October 09, 2005 - Msg 30799: Hi, all. Back from preachin', just had a quick lunch and am about to go plant siome stuff. Thought I'd have a quick spell of rockin' here to get my strength up first.

Asa, I'm quite sure the posts were not our TOM. I spoke to him on the phone, asked him directly and he said no, that he had not been able to post anything in months. When he does post, though, I will be able to tell, and will let everyone know.

I must thank the Lord for the beauty I see outside this window. Roses are blooming, mandevilla vine is twining on the arbor and blooming beautifully, crape myrtle still blooming a bit, begonias, marigolds, a few petunia holdouts, hibiscus, geraniums, newly-planted pansies, mums starting to pop, it's just lovely. I have a lot of nandina, and they're putting on heavy heads of berries that will soon turn bright red, and will be pretty all winter. Butterfly bushes are still blooming and I can count at least eight of the little flying jewels around the bushes right now.

Well, still need to plant the rest of the pansies and snaps, so guess I'd better get off this rocker and get to work. If you see Goldbrick Wheeler, send him my way. Maybe I can wring a little work out of him. Have a great afternoon, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

October 09, 2005 - Msg 30800: Agree with you Ro...those weren't Tom. There were several right there that were from the same IP...even one that had my name on it. Floyd took care of a few of them...but it was a definit interloper.

October 09, 2005 - Msg 30805: Well, I spent about three hours outside, digging in the dirt, and only got about a flat of pansies planted. Still have just over three more to go. No, I'm not a slow planter. I just keep finding other things that need to be done. The vinca had overrun its bed, swallowed up a boulder, and was out into the grass. The peppermint had grown so high and spread so far that clumps of geraniums and periwinkles and pentas were just gasping for air and sunlight. I declare, I need to take a torch to that stuff. I never saw anything grow like it does. I filled two huge trash bags with the stuff I cut and pulled out, and managed to plant a few pansies, finally, in the vacated space. Tomorrow I absolutely must not get distracted, but just find some empty dirt and get those last three flats planted. Anybody want to help?

Now I need to go wash off a couple of layers of dirt. I just love getting dirty! It always feels so good when you get clean again.

Welcome Hodie, keep your rocker dusted off or we will APB you too.

Got alot of wood cut for the winter on Saturday until my husband got his chainsaw caugth in a mighty oak (actually it was poplar, but mighty poplar didn't sound right). We brought four pick-up truck loads home - about 8 rick. We will need more before winter but off to find a chainsaw bar.

Cornbread and beans sound sooooo wonderful Irishter - almost made some this weekend. But I would be the only one eating them. But I might make a small batch just for me.

Take care everyone - it's kind of breezy here. . .and drizzly.

homemaker

October 10, 2005 - Msg 30820: I declare, you boys are a caution. I just have to make this little comment, though. I believe you meant to say "downwind", not "upwind." Hmmmm??

Well, I got all my little posies in the ground. Finally had to pull up the squirrels' peanut patch to clear enough room for the last two flats. There's plenty of room in the raised bed, but it's overgrown with peppermint, and my gimpy old knee won't let me climb around in there - too dangerous. I could stand on the ground and pull up the peanuts, so I did. I clipped off the root part, where the peanuts are, and set them aside in a pile. The squirrels will find them, never fear.

Tomorrow is the knee surgery, at 12:30. If you folks happen to be thinking of it around then, please ask the Lord to lend His support to the procedure. I should be home tomorrow evening, or Wednesday morning at the latest. Will be back on the porch very soon.

Welcome, Hodie Snitch! We're happy you decided to join us. The more the merrier. Irishter, I'm delighted you enjoyed my little travelogue so much. Your kind words are very encouraging, because I do love to write. homemaker, if you ever want to make a big batch of cornbread and beans, I'll share. All I need to round out that meal is some iced tea. Then, if there's leftover cornbread, I need a big glass of cold buttermilk, and I can make short work of all of it. Yum!

October 10, 2005 - Msg 30829: MDC, I'm tempted to wait until TOM actually shows up on the porch. The arrangement he's anticipating is not directly under his control, so there's the possibility it could fall through. I think he'll be okay, but it ain't over 'til it's over, as they say.

I'm tired. Had planned to bathe the Plum tonight, but maybe we'll just make it a good comb-out and leave it at that. She's not actually dirty, I just wanted her fresh for me to come home to. I wore out every muscle in my body today. Did you every try to plant stuff while kneeling on ONE knee? The first few minutes are easy. The next hour or so is tiring, and the last hour is miserable. The job is done, however, and that lazy Mr. Wheeler never showed up at all. No wonder they call him "Goldbrick."

Have a great day tomorrow, friends, and thanks for your prayers and well wishes. I'm sure all will be well. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Prayers once again for you today Romeena. Look to see you back here real soon like.

Sorry about your braves spot. There is always next year, right?

MDC,So you don't see any resemblence huh? Gosh, I think she is very Mother Spragueish. (lol) But then again I think I look a lot like Frank Sinatra so what do I know? (lol) (actually more Mel Gibsonish)

I'll be taking some soup over to Romeena's later to assist with her recovery. What you all bringing?

October 11, 2005 - Msg 30835: Prayers for Ro. I know the Lord will be with her every minute.

"Hey" to Hodie! Welcome...I love the name choice.

Been a very busy weekend and Monday, for sure.

Asa, why do you want to hurt me? Every fall its the same thing...talk of frost and snow in the mountains....sniff. Its hot and muggy here (again).

MDC, yes, its my son Sean that you have prayed for. In most ways he is doing very well. Some weeks are tougher than others. He is coming along well in the Christian school we put him in last spring but the Tourette symptoms have gotten worse since end of summer. Its hard and sometimes humiliating for him, as one can imagine, not being able to control certain bodily movements and such. He has gained a significant amount of weight due tp the Paxil he takes and that is hard for him. I would like to confide in my porch friends to pray for his most current problem...sorry if this gets a bit long...Sean also has a form of Obssesive Compulsive Disorder and he feels like he, "has" to do certain things to make himself feel "right". Anyway, this can be very humiliating for him and he had to confide in his teacher yesterday and for a 10 year old boy, that was tough. She took him aside in private and she listened as he tearfully told her about his problem and this dear, sweet teacher told him, "Its ok Sean. I understand. You can tell me anything. I love you". And her simple, but wonderful response just made everything ok for Sean. He knew he had a safe place to fall with his teacher. He told me later, "Mom, she is the sweetest teacher in the world". I just broke down and cried...for Sean and what he has to deal with daily, and for God's provision in such a kind teacher. I am so proud of my brave young son. He keeps going back to school each day without compaining even though its so hard sometimes. I know I couldn't have done it at his age. Thanks for listening.

Well, better set about the chores of the day. Love to all,

Boo

October 11, 2005 - Msg 30836: I just read over my above post and it sounded so sad that I wanted to also tell all of you (my friends) that my heart sometimes hurts for my son but mostly it really rejoices because I know that he belongs to God and I have an assurance that God has a plan and calling for his life. I think about how what he is going through is cultivating patience, understanding and a compassion for others that God will use to glorify Himself. He is already a very kind little boy and I am so thankful for the character God is forming in Sean. So...just wanted you to know we will be A-OK..even when things get tough. Thanks!

October 12, 2005 - Msg 30846: Thanks for asking about the goats pappabear - we are getting them ready for winter - they really only need a little shelter, they are very hardy and adapt well to the elements. After last year's big snow storm, we thought we would find them all dead -all survived and we thanked God for his mercy.

That's great about your son Sam, my son has dyslexia and we struggle nightly with homework but as my dad says, this is the most important crop I'm gonna raise.

Good to see you Tom - we have missed you!

Quiet Sam, Sounds like you had a good crop this year. Just don't be peddeling your goods to close to town or Barney will be all over you!:)

Good to see you Charlotte. Gosh I wish Hazel, Salty Dog, Bulbsnatcher, Mrs. Wiley, Mavis, New Neighbor and some of the old timers would come back here. We got the rockers to swing it!

October 12, 2005 - Msg 30849: Pappa, do I understand you right, we look thru the archives, find a porch quote that touched us, not necessarily a tags quote, and re-post it for all to read again? Maybe it's that simple, but I'm just "trying" to complcate it! ha
Good morning honeys and dear!

October 12, 2005 - Msg 30855: Hey, you guys are really somthin' special! How can I thank you enough for your prayers and warm words of encouragement? Sam, hearing about your son warmed my heart. I'm so glad he is doing well for himself. I'll bet he's a man of character that you can be proud of.

Homemaker, wanted to tell you that I woke up the other morning and my black Lab was having fits in the back yard. Turns out that our neighbor behind us aquired 2 cute little Pygmie (sp?) goats and they were right up to the fence staring at the dog! He also brought home a pot-bellied mama pig and her pot-bellied baby. They now wander into our front yard every morning and dig up the yard with their snouts...looking for grubs, I guess. Anyway I thought of you when I saw the goats...they are of a much smaller variety than your goats, I realize, but they sure are cute....and the dog FINALLY stopped barking after about 3 days.

Pappa, I understand your instructions but I'm not sure how it will work if we don't tell who the quote was from...might get confusing in the telling....just a thought.

Asa, Honey Bear, you can talk about the cold and snow all you want, you hear? I have worked through my grief and finally come to a place of acceptance....at least I think I have. I just have to learn not to covet my neighbor's weather.
By the way, do you really look, "Mel Gibson-ish" because Mel is sure a "purty man"!

Ro, if you are reading this, I sure hope you are feeling better and not in pain. God bless you as you recover.

Hey Hodie, where are ya?

Goodnight, sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite,

Boo

October 12, 2005 - Msg 30856: OK Pappa, I am going to give an example of the Porch Quote-A-Thon.....back in May of 2004 someone whose name starts with an "A" and who likes to talk about cold weather said,..."Some days you're the hydrant and some days you're the dog". Heehee, anyone remember that one?

SPRING GARDEN
SO WHEN i looked at those flowers,
I was looking at God,
For they bloomed in His sun
and grew in his so.
And each lovely flower
was a voice from above,
that whispered a message
of kindnes and love.
For I feel in my heart,
and I know you do too,
that God speaks to us all
through that kind of things we do.
And when I looked at those flowers
I couldn't help but feel,
that they brought heaven nearer
and made God so Real.

Thank You TOM

A MOTHER'S LOVE
Mary rocked the infant in her arms,
the sun of God with baby charms.
a small hand curling round her finger;
all through the years the memories linger.
she sat at dusk bybhis side
when a brilliant star shone heaven wide
above the manger where curled in sleep
she touches him- precious thoughts to keep.
blessed Mary, chosen by God-
you showed humanity the way
to love with the depth of a mother's love
the infant Jesus, born on christmas day.

Hodie Snitch, that was NEAT. Thanks for sharing it. We are ALL of an amazing mind, aren't we?

Good to aee you on the porch, TOM, and thank you for posting the poem. We enjoy it...."The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven.."...or something like that according to Barney.

Why the trip to Germany, Irishter?? Just curious. I would like to make a journey there someday.

Pappa Bear, we all make embarrassing typos--I am often ashamed of my spelling. For a college grad, I'm not a very good speller. I don't let it bother me much because I know I am among friends here....of course I don't think I ever wrote anything like "porning". Heehee.

"Ro! Ro! Where are you??"

Better go. I'm beat to the sox and I hear my sister's voice in the other room. She must have dropped in with her Yankee husband for a visit. Bye!

October 14, 2005 - Msg 30884: Thanks gang, I KNEW I was right!
I saw some clips of it on that program American Dreams. Used to watch it as a lad! "Good beat and easy to dance to" haha
Ok, here's a "little" moulage: A school district here in the Phx area came out with new rules this year:
All kids MUST wear a hat outside, the ONLY way to play 'tag' is to 'power walk', no running while playing, all teeter-totters were removed, and any games involving a ball for grade 1 to 6 are with a wiffleball or yarn ball only! Can you belive it? Parents are up in arms, and things are really heating up over this whole thing! To keep it porch-related, could you imagine what Andy would do if Helen Crump were to say that Opie's class had to follow such??? It's a crazy PC world folks!
Pappa, could you imagine such when we were kids?
Wow!
Well, have a good weekend. Asa, I finally got all the dishes done. ha. Prayers continue for all you fine folks, your families, our soldiers, soldier Kevin, Tom, Ro, leaders, and the world!

October 14, 2005 - Msg 30886: Hi, everybody. I feel like I have a touch of a virus or something today (not a computer one but a real one). I wanted to check in and see if Ro had posted today. I am starting to get a little anxious to hear from her too, Asa. I emailed her last night and it came back undelivered so I am trying to send it again. I have to recheck the email address. I don't have her phone number but tried information and got nowhere with that. I met her two daughters who live in Frdericksburg but I don't remember their last names or I would call them just to check on her. Oh well, I'm sure she's fine. She is probably just not feeling up to sitting on the porch yet.

Have a safe trip, Irishter, and you don't sound so dumb...your wife's brother-in-law could also be her sister's husband and not your brother, right? Boy, how confusing is that?

I haven't thought of American Bandstand in ages. It used to be the only thing to watch on Saturday. I can remember my dad torturing us with The Lawrence Welk Show. I still get a sinking feeling when I even think about it. Talk about gross--no offense to any of you who like the show.

Here's a new topic of conversation: What year did you graduate (or leave school, if you didn't) and what TV shows, music and movies were popular that year? I'll go first for the sake of example, that is if I can remember that far back....The year was 1980 and My Sherona was a no. 1 hit, Billy Joel, Kiss, Cheap Trick, the Eagles, and Queen, were popular. I was watching Dallas, The Walton's, Little House on The Prarie and All in The Family, Mash, and Good Times. Movies I remember from that year are All That Jazz, Friday the 13th and I think The Amityville Horror...saw them all at the Drive-In. Ok...that's it for me.

Think I'll take a rest. Hubby took the kids out for awhile so I could rest. Better take advantage of the time. Bye.

October 14, 2005 - Msg 30888: i wonder what you think about seeing if floyd would approve a name before it was officaly taken, not being unfriendly however over the past year or to someone comes aboard and everyone says ok then the original person comes back. i hope this doesn't start a moulage or offends anyone cause we love each person and look forward to new folks. it happened to me when i used rafe holister and about two months later heshowed up, we worked it out quickly and i dropped the name, i hope this makes sense- with so many wonderful new folks and long ago posters which we cherish maybe someone has an idea to avoid confusion. pappa

October 14, 2005 - Msg 30889: Howdy, everyone! Thanks so much for all the concern, the prayers and good wishes from each of you. I'm home, actually came home Tuesday night, but wasn't able to sit at the computer. Leg is in a hip-to-ankle brace, not particularly comfortable to try to sit with it on. Walking with crutches or a walker, toe-touch on the affected leg only, no weight bearing. Using a motion machine 12 hours a day, and must be lying down for that. It keeps my knee from stiffening up. Since I'm totally unable to take anything that remotely resembles a narcotic, or codeine or anything like it, I'm making do with Tylenol and Advil. The pain is manageable, not as bad as one would expect. I'll be up and running in no time, I'm sure.

Good to see TOM back on the porch. #30840 and 30861 are his, not too sure about 30872.

To the two Hodie's, I'll bet you all can work that out. To the original, may I suggest you quit being such a stranger?? We've missed you! To the newest version, how about being Grovely Barch? (I think that was the name.) I don't recall ever having a Grovely before.

Well, I need to go rustle up something to eat, and fall into my chair and take some more Tylenol. Have a great weekend, everyone, and thanks again for your concern. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
