August 24, 2005 - Msg 30084: Prayers go out to Soldier Kevin and his family. A simple thank you doesn't seem enough -

We moved hay last nite - getting ready for winter. We will be cutting wood soon - as most of you know - that's all we heat with so it takes 6 - 7 truck loads for us to get through a winter. We will be busy little bees. When we finally get our new house built - we are doing total electric.

We are excited to be getting on the dish network next week - we have 14 foot big dish in our back yard and although we get some really good channels on C-band everything is going digital so lightening hit the big dish Saturday and Dish Network was called.

I'll be looking forward to the Mongolian Papers Ro - I guess I shouldn't tell you that we took two goats to the butcher on Monday and take three more next week. Just think - the next time you eat Papa John's Pepperoni Pizza - you can say "BAAAAA" - most pepperoni and most of the meat at Taco Bell is g-o-a-t. Someone asked me if I named all the boy goats - there are some who get names just because it happens (like Motley has a mottled colored head and Forest was born in the woods) but for the most part, we just call them by their mother's name and say "Sunny's boy", etc.

WEll - enough gabbing for now - take care everyone - it's WEDNESDAY!

homemaker, my apologies. I put your address in my book, but can't find any record of having sent anything. Something evidently distracted me - that's not hard to do. Anyway, the first four have now been sent, and the rest will go in just a minute, along with Spot's. Sorry!
I hope you folks enjoy these ramblings of mine. The trip is just such a blessing in my life that I enjoy sharing it.

They sat down on the 50th floor with their legs dangling to eat lunch. The Mexican opened his lunch and groaned when he saw a taco.He said I always get tacos for lunch. If my wife puts the same in my lunch tomorrow I'm going to jump off this bldg. The Irishman said if my wife puts corn and hash in my lunch again tomorrow,I'm going to jump off this bldg. The American said ,if I have another sandwich in my lunch tomorrow I'm going to jump off this bldg too. The next day at lunch, the Mexican had tacos so he jumped. The Irishman had corn and hash and he jumped. The American had a sandwich and he jumped.Since they all died the same day they had a combined service for them. At the funeral, the Mexican's wife was sobbing and said,if I had'nt fixed him a taco in his lunch he would still be here. Yhe Irishman's wife was crying and going on and said if I had fixed something besides corn and hash my husband would still be here. Yhey started looking at the composed American who wasn't at all upset. She said "Don't look at me,he made his own lunch!" Be careful wives. Give some variety.Ha Love and prayers to all Slim

August 26, 2005 - Msg 30110: Mornin to the PORCH! Hope everybody is having a good Friday...and has a great weekend. A little something to keep the work day in perspective...

Psalm 23 - For the Work Place

The Lord is my real boss, and I shall not want.
He gives me peace when chaos is all around me.
He gently reminds me to pray and do all things without
murmuring and complaining.

He reminds me that He is my source and not my job.
He restores my sanity every day and guides my decisions,
that I might honor him in all that I do.

Even though I face absurd amounts of e-mails, system
crashes, unrealistic deadlines, budget cutbacks, gossiping
co-workers, discriminating supervisors, and an aging body
that doesn't cooperate every morning, I still will not stop---
for He is with me! His presence, His peace, and His power
will see me through.

He raises me up, even when they fail to promote me.
He claims me as His own, even when the company threatens
to let me go. His Faithfulness and love is better than any bonus

His retirement plan beats every 401k there is!
When it's all said and done, I'll be working for Him a whole lot
longer and for that, I BLESS HIS NAME!

August 26, 2005 - Msg 30114: A friend sent this to me..and I usually don't pass things that I can't verify along. But with this, it doens't matter if the story is true, it's the meaning behind it. We're all meant to be used in some way...sometimes we're just too stubborn to take advantage of a "God moment"...

Beth Moore
April 20, 2005
Knoxville Airport -

Waiting to board the plane: I had the Bible on my lap and was very
intent upon what I was doing. I'd had a marvelous morning with the Lord.

I say that because I want to tell you it is a scary thing to have the
Spirit of God really working in you. You could end up doing some things you
never would have done otherwise. Life in the Spirit can be dangerous for a
thousand reasons not the least of which is your ego...

I tried to keep from staring, but he was such a strange sight. Humped over
in a wheelchair, he was skin and bones, dressed in clothes that obviously
fit when he was at least twenty pounds heavier. His knees protruded from
his trousers, and his shoulders looked like the coat hanger was still
in his shirt.

His hands looked like tangled masses of veins and bones. The strangest
part of him was his hair and nails. Stringy grey hair hung well over his
shoulders and down part of his back. His fingernails were long.
Clean, but
strangely out of place on an old man.

I looked down at my Bible as fast as I could, discomfort burning my face.
As I tried to imagine what his story might have been, I found myself
wondering if I'd just had a Howard Hughes sighting. Then, I remembered
reading somewhere that he was dead. So this man in the airport... an
impersonator maybe? Was a camera on us somewhere?....

There I sat trying to concentrate on the Word to keep from being
concerned about a thin slice of humanity served on a wheelchair only a few seats
from me. All the while my heart was growing more and more overwhelmed with a
feeling for him. Let's admit it. Curiosity is a heap more comfortable than
true concern, and suddenly I was awash with aching emotion for this
bizarre-looking old man.

I had walked with God long enough to see the handwriting on the wall.
I've learned that when I begin to feel what God feels, something so contrary
to my natural feelings, something dramatic is bound to happen. And it may
be embarrassing. I immediately began to resist because I could feel God
working on my spirit and I started arguing with God in my mind.

"Oh no, God please no." I looked up at the ceiling as if I could stare
straight through it into heaven and said, "Don't make me witness to this
man. Not right here and now. Please. I'll do anything. Put me on the
same plane, but don't make me get up here and witness to this man in front of
this gawking audience. Please, Lord!"...

There I sat in the blue vinyl chair begging His Highness, "Please don't
make me witness to this man. Not now. I'll do it on the plane."

Then I heard it..."I don't want you to witness to him. I want you to
brush his hair." The words were so clear, my heart leapt into my throat, and
my thoughts spun like a top. Do I witness to the man or brush his hair?
No brainer. I looked straight back up at the ceiling and said, "God, as I
live and breathe, I want you to know I am ready to witness to this man.
I'm on this Lord. I'm you're girl! You've never seen a woman witness
to a man faster in your life. What difference does it make if his hair is a
mess if he is not redeemed? I am on him. I am going to witness to
this man."

Again as clearly as I've ever heard an audible word, God seemed to write
this statement across the wall of my mind. "That is not what I said, Beth.
I don't want you to witness to him. I want you to go brush his hair."

I looked up at God and quipped, "I don't have a hairbrush. It's in my
suitcase on the plane, How am I suppose to brush his hair without a

God was so insistent that I almost involuntarily began to walk toward
him as these thoughts came to me from God's word: "I will thoroughly furnish
you unto all good works." (2 Tim 3:17) I stumbled over to the wheelchair
thinking I could use one myself. Even as I retell this story my pulse
quickens and I feel those same butterflies.

I knelt down in front of the man, and asked as demurely as possible,
"Sir, may I have the pleasure of brushing your hair?" He looked back at me
and said, "What did you say?" "May I have the pleasure of brushing your hair?"
He responded in volume ten, "Little lady, if you expect me to
hear you, you're going to have to talk louder than that. At this point,
I took a deep breath and blurted out, "SIR, MAY I HAVE THE PLEASURE OF

At that point, every eye in the place darted right at me. I was the
only thing in the room looking more peculiar than old Mr. Longlocks. Face
crimson and forehead breaking out in a sweat, I watched him look up at
me with absolute shock on his face, and say, "If you really want to."

Are you kidding? Of course I didn't want to. But God didn't seem
interested in my personal preference right about then. He pressed on my
heart until I could utter the words, "Yes, sir, I would be pleased. But
I have one little problem. I don't have a hairbrush."

"I have one in my bag," he responded. I went around to the back of that
wheelchair and I got on my hands and knees and unzipped the stranger's
old carry-on hardly believing what I was doing. I stood up and started
brushing the old man's hair. It was perfectly clean, but it was tangled and matted.
I don't do many things well, but I must admit I've had notable
experience untangling knotted hair mothering two little girls. Like I'd done with
either Amanda or Melissa in such a condition, I began brushing at the
very bottom of the strands, remembering to take my time not to pull.

A miraculous thing happened to me as I started brushing that old man's
hair. Everybody else in the room disappeared. There was no one alive for
those moments except that old man and me. I brushed and I brushed and I
brushed until every tangle was out of that hair.

I know this sounds so strange, but I've never felt that kind of love for
another soul in my entire life. I believe with all my heart, I - for
that few minutes - felt a portion of the very love of God. He had overtaken
my heart for a little while like someone renting a room and making Himself at
home for a short while. The emotions were so strong and so pure that I
knew they had to be God's.

His hair was finally as soft and smooth as an infant's. I slipped the
brush back in the bag, went around the chair to face him. I got back down
on my knees, put my hands on his knees, and said, "Sir, do you know my Jesus?"

He said, "Yes, I do." Well, that figures. He explained, "I've known
Him since I married my bride." She wouldn't marry me until I got to know
the Savior." He said, "You see, the problem is, I haven't seen my bride in
months. I've had open-heart surgery, and she's been too ill to come see
me. I was sitting here thinking to myself. What a mess I must be for
my bride."

Only God knows how often He allows us to be part of a divine moment when
we are completely unaware of the significance. This, on the other hand,
was one of those rare encounters when I knew God had intervened in details
only He could have known. It was a God moment, and I'll never forget it.
Our time came to board, and we were not on the same plane. I was deeply
ashamed of how I'd acted earlier and would have been so proud to have
accompanied him on that aircraft.

I still had a few minutes, and as I gathered my things to board, the
airline hostess returned from the corridor, tears streaming down her cheeks.
She said, "That old man's sitting on the plane, sobbing. Why did you
do that? What made you do that?"
I said, "Do you know Jesus? He can be the bossiest thing!" We got to share.
I learned something about God that day. He knows if you're exhausted
because you're hungry, you're serving in the wrong place or it is time
to move on but you feel too responsible to budge. He knows if you're
hurting or feeling rejected. He knows if you're sick or drowning under a wave
of temptation. He knows if you just need your hair brushed.
He sees you as an individual. Tell Him your need!

I got on my own flight, sobs choking my throat, wondering how many
opportunities just like that one had I missed along the way... all
because I didn't want people to think I was strange.

God didn't send me to that old man. He sent that old man to me.

August 26, 2005 - Msg 30115: Hey Goober! Thanks for sharing that. I remember seeing Beth Moore tell that story in one of her videos and it took my breath away...really something to think about. I beleive that we don't fully recognize what it means to people when we serve them in love...even in seemingly small ways. I needed to be reminded. Thanks.

Well, I know its been a long time since I dropped by. I wish so much that I had a computer now.

Our house is still on the market and no offers yet but we have a couple interested that is talking to a mortgage agency right now. I can't wait to start on the new house...seems like its been an eternity. Come November, we will have been living with my parents for a year. Please pray that we sell that house!

I sure wish I could get your emails about Mongolia, Ro. I enjoyed them so much afer your last trip.

Well, no other news right now. Hope you are all well and I miss you!

August 26, 2005 - Msg 30116: Shoes are the only"pair"that actually has two separate pieces. There was an old lady and man who went to the State Fair every year. Every time they went the old man wanted to ride the airplane. The ride was $50.00 and the wife always said that's a lot of money for a ride. $50.00 is $50.00. This year the attendant says to the old couple, I'm going to let you ride for free but don't say a word. OK? They promised they wouldn't. The pilot took them up, over ,around ,flip-flops,and every which way. When he landed,he told the old man he was proud of him for not saying anything. The old man says,"When Esther fell out a while ago, I started to say something but $50.00 is $50.00." Slim

August 27, 2005 - Msg 30119: Good Saturday Morning Porch! It's me *Mavis Yep, you read that right, it's me! Long time since I been here I know & I'm ready to take my lickins about staying gone so long. Things here have been so crazy & downright unbelievable at times, I don't even know where to begin. My sister & I aren't talking now, not fighting over Mom's THINGS, fighting over how to handle the estate itself. She doesn't want to pay the bills & I can't make her understand we HAVE to pay them. At any rate, I haven't spoken to her for over 2 months. Wouldn't my mother love that?? Please keep me in your prayers, the stress of all this is really getting me down. Old Doc Jones has finally convinced me to take something for my nerves (been arguing with him for the past year that I didn't want to do that, but he finally won) I also am starting a new business be sure to check out my website *Mavis' New Place all my new email info is on there.
I'll try not to be a stranger too long, & if I do, ya'll please email me & kick me in the behind to make me post more. I do miss you guys.

Sorry you and your sister are having problems, but I feel sure you'll get it all worked out. As you indicated, your mom would not want you two to have any difficulty between you. Anyway, welcome back. I like your website, and have bookmarked it.

Well, off I go to run some errands with my grandson. He's spending a few days with me, and I'm really enjoying him.

Wish you were nearby, and could groom the Plum for me. As you know, I do her myself, and she looks like ragamuffin most of the time.

Have a great weekend, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

August 27, 2005 - Msg 30125: Mavis, so good to see you! I just checked out your website, and it is very nice! IF I had a dog, and IF I lived near you, I would certainly be one of your clients! I hope the troubles between you and your sister work their way out and you can have peace again.

Hey to Boo, also. Good to see you are doing well, and I hope that home of yours sells real soon. Check in with us when you can!

ky girl, good to see you posting too! Hey to slim, (that was a funny one!).

Goober, just so's you know, I copied that message of yours above, and sent it to quite a few friends of mine. I had to wipe the tears out of my eye before I did it though!

Asa, I did see you snuck in there! Good to see you. Is it getting to be fall there yet?!

My end of the porch has been kind of rainy this morning, so if it dries out enough, I have to get off this rocker and mow my lawn! Better get moving!

August 28, 2005 - Msg 30132: Hey Porchsters,

Been a while. How is everyone?

August 28, 2005 - Msg 30133: Hi Irishter, good to hear from you. There was a man driving along the road and he saw a rabbit in the road and tried to avoid it. He couldn't so he looked out his rear view mirror and saw it laying in the road. He turned around and went back and got out of his car and was crying over the dead rabbit when a lady came along. The man told her he was so sorry he had killed this rabbit. She started shaking her hands and telling this man not to worry. She gets a spray can out of her trunk and sprays the rabbit real good. Well the rabbit got up and started hopping down the road. He turns around and waves at the lady and man. He goes a little farther and turns around and waves again and so on. The man asked the lady what she sprayed on the rabbit and she looked at the can and read Hair spray. Will bring life back to dead hair and permanent wave. How's that one? Slim

August 29, 2005 - Msg 30138: Good Mornin' Porch! It was a very busy weekend here on the Hillbilly end of the porch. MDC...Thank You for sending the card to Kevin and a BIG Thank You to everyone on the porch for your care, concern and Prayers for the soldier Kevin Downs. Kevin's sister Shannon was in from TX this weekend and was at preachin' yesterday...she said Kevin was still in good spirits...I don't know if I have updated the porch but Kevin had to have both feet amputated above the ankles. I told Shannon about my wonderful friends here on the porch and that you would be sending Kevin cards and she was very touched by your kindness and I wants you to know that she and her family can not tell you how much they appreciate it and what it will mean to Kevin. Just more reasons why I Love this porch.

Thanks for the great stories Slim in the midst of all the current events we need some old fashioned pure laughter..."A Cheerful Heart is Good Medicine" Proverbs 17:22

Goober...Great Beth Moore story for ALL of us my wife really enjoys her studys...God's cell phone number is Jeremiah 33:3

Gotta' Go and get ready for Katrina...we are actually going to see some tropical storm weather from her but not anything like what our neighbors in New Orlean, MS, AL, and the Gulf are experincing as I type this post...Let's all take a moment to remember them in prayer and ask God for His hand upon them.

"Nip It!...Nip It in the Bud!"

"Poor Horatio"...only a half boy!

I Appreciate it and Good Night!

August 29, 2005 - Msg 30144: I've been in front of the TV all morning. Those poor people in the Astrodome. So many people in one place. It could have been a tragedy in it's self. I'm glad our Lord had his hand over them and protected them. On a lighter side. A traveling salesman stopped in a Amish community in his travels. Once he rented the room,he was going to watch some TV and relax. There was'nt a TV. Oh well,he says, I'll call my wife and talk to her before I turn in. There was no phone either. What the heck,I'll go get some soda out of the machine and just sit around and relax. You guessed it, there was no soda machine either! As he was paying his bill the next morning, he said to the desk clerk Why is'nt there a TV in your rooms? The clerk said Because we're waiting for Jesus to come back. Well why is'nt there a phone in the room? The clerk says..We're waiting for Jesus to come back. There isn't even a soda machine. Why he asked? We're waiting for Jesus to come back. The salesman says..."If he's ever been "here" he won't be back!" Slim

August 29, 2005 - Msg 30145: That's cute Slim.
Homemaker, it ain't yer goatburgers that bother me. It's them little round hard things you try to pass off as hard candy that makes me point south!

I still miss it each Sept! Hang in there.
Have a good day.

August 30, 2005 - Msg 30150: I can even dip it in peanut butter - sorta like a butterfinger. . .but Asa, you really should be worried about my chocolate chip cookies ;)!

The rain has just begun here in southeastern Indiana and today is the day our new small satellite dish is installed. Glad I am not the installers but I really need my M(ayberry)TV!

Went to the auction last nite - bought some really neat stuff - LOL, I had to buy some Disney junk to get some collectible Disney cards for my son, the other wanted a Harley Davidson toy of some sort. And then my husband found some things. It was fun though although it was a tiring nite as well.

MDC - I have seen Mr. Hollands Opus, and I cry at the end thinking of some of the teachers that have inspired me and took time for me. I had one teacher who tutored me in Algebra 1 in high school. I just couldn't understand all those "x" and "y" being numbers but he helped me and I didn't fail anymore tests after his tutoring.

Well - must get busy today. . .

September 01, 2005 - Msg 30167: A litle boy was always bragging about his mom going to have him a little brother. He bragged to any and everyone who would listen. His mom let him feel the baby moving one day and after that he never mentioned the baby again. His dad finally asked him why he had'nt talked about it any lately and he whispered to his dad"I think mom ate it" There is so much fear and worrisome things going on in this nation. Ky school boards are considering setting a fee for children to ride the buses. Gas went from $2.39 a gal. to $3.29 today. My sister and I are going to make a list and try holding off for a weekly visit to the various stores. My parents did this in the 50s.Not because of gas prices, but because not just everyone had cars.I have a sweet neighbor lady who does'nt drive and she pays someone to take her to the store on Saturdays.Well,I'll stop by tomorrow. It's time to hit the flatside.Good night all...Slim

September 01, 2005 - Msg 30168: Morning Porch,

I have to ask for prayer for my brother-in-law. He is an iron worker, and he fell on the job yesterday. At 8:00 a.m. eastern time on Thursday, (today), he will be undergoing extensive surgery that will last 5 to 10 hours. He somehow fell on his face and his knees, and today's surgery will deal only with his facial injuries. Miraculously, he didn't injure his spinal cord, and he doesn't appear to have internal injuries or brain damage. He is in very bad shape however. I am going to mow his lawn in a few minutes, but when I return if I get any information on his progress I will update you. Thanks so much for helping him!

Have a great Mayberry Day,

September 01, 2005 - Msg 30171: Prayers for your cousin, ky girl, and for your brother in law, Mary.

I looked at late last night - it says gas is as high as 4.00 a gallon in the Atlanta area. It's gotten to 3 bucks here in SW MO. But I'm thankful that I have a car to drive, gas for it and a safe place to live. I can't even fathom what the folks on the gulf coast are going through right now. My prayers are definitely going up for them.

Have a good day, everyone!

September 01, 2005 - Msg 30172: Hey Ky Girl - do you know where Annville and McKee are. My aunt used to think going to London was the big city from her small house in Annville. It was nice thinking about that area again.

Thankful for all of God's bounty here in Indiana and so sorry for all the devestation in the south.
Thankful for the porch and all of its heavenly resources. I'm even thankful for Asa!

Everyone have a great day!

September 01, 2005 - Msg 30174: Prayers continue. And prayers for kin of KYgirl and Mary W, soldier keven, flood victims, and all ailing in any way. I took a glance at Miss Crump's Bulletin board and saw that they had a cyber prayer meeting last night. That sounds like a good idea for us porchsters. Prayed for return of civility in the area, and for all the ailing porchsters and kin etc. My oh my do we need some revival to break out in America!
On a similar note, I have a new favorite ep. It has been "man in a hurry" for a long time, but I watched "Andy and Opie Bachelors" of season 3 DVD where Miss peggy helps out the boys when aunt bee goes to relatives. The scene on the front porch, with it's dvd clarity, of Peggy and Andy singing and Opie settin there makin them both laugh, was about as idyllic a TV scene as could ever be.
And what a great all around ep AND a great epilog to boot! Well, just my philisophical musings.
Have a good night,

September 01, 2005 - Msg 30178: I just got a report on my brother-in-law. He went through nine hours of surgery on his face and the doctors were very pleased with how all came out. They say he will look pretty much like he did before the accident. They also said he should buy a lottery ticket because people just don't fall two stories, land on their face and knees hitting concrete, and live to tell about it. I believe God already had His hand in the situation before we even knew about it!
I would appreciate your continued prayers, because he still has a lot of healing to do. God is good, though, and I believe He will help Mark to completely heal.

Prayers for all the people affected by Katrina, they sure are in some desperate straits...

All else I can say is...GOD IS GOOD!

Have a wonderful Mayberry evening!
Mary Wiggins
