January 29, 2005 - Msg 26810: 'Morning, honeys and dears. Asa, you could be right about old Henry, he really wasn't such a bad guy, but he sure was lazy, and if there's one thing I can't abide, it's laziness. It's true, Andy did volunteer to do the roofing and the painting, but Henry conned him into it, and I'll bet he found the strength to hold his hand out on payday. Besides, I never felt like he really was in love with Aunt Bee, I think he just loved the soft life she represented.

We have a balmy 45 degrees here on the North Texas end of the porch, supposed to get to the 50's. It's very cloudy, but no rain and no wind. Not a bad day. In fact, I have some amaryllis bulbs that a friend gave me, and I may just plant them this afternoon. Such pretty things, amaryllis.

Well, guess I'd better go put out some critter food. Birds have been coming by, pecking around in search of seed, and a squirrel is splatted out on top of his house, watching me through my window. Next thing I know, he'll be holding a sign that reads "Will do cute things for food." Several other squirrels have traversed the back fence, and here comes one along the side fence now, on a reconnaissance mission, I suppose. I don't want to disappoint them, so off I go. Have a great day, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

January 29, 2005 - Msg 26811: Well! I didn't intend to sweep the porch, must have been the long tail on my nightgown that did it! Or it might have been the Plum's little tail plume, she was wagging it pretty hard when I got out of my chair. I'm sure she was planning to hit me up for a carrot as I went through the kitchen. --Rkomeena

January 29, 2005 - Msg 26817: Howdy spot, Miss Sherry, pipeman and all...

Got a little over an inch of snow but it's pretty much melted off with the ground being so warm and all.

Alyce - we would read the Bible and pray with our Evie before she heads to bed, and we were just talking with her in bed one night and her Daddy was telling her about the plan of salvation - Jesus taking our sins and forgiving us, and making our hearts clean so He can come inside and live there. She said she wanted to have Jesus in her heart and so we prayed with her. We still explain salvation to her every once in a while and ask her to repeat the prayer (not so much because we don't think that she received Jesus, but more so she has a more real understanding of what she did). She loves to go to church and pray, has memorized some Bible verses, and loves to sing Bible songs - so we have no doubt she does love Jesus.

Haha - Rev Jr. you crack me up!

Hey spot, I was watching the Weather Channel earlier today and they showed Cobb County, GA having some ice and power outages. Prayers that your guys stay safe while their working.

Thanks for the grub, pipeman. MMMM!

Sterling, I'm with you, I won't complain anymore if it is raining on election day! Good for those folks over there! Hopefully our troops can come home earlier now.

January 31, 2005 - Msg 26837: Hello everybody. Visiting my sister and decided to drop in. We are doing ok (even without cable TV or computer). I bought a collection of TAGS DVD's and have been having my own marathons to survive. I found this neat collection of old TV programs at the dollar store and last night was watching Alfred Hitchc-ck Presents and some old show that aired in the fifties called, Medic. Anyone remember that one?

Anyway, it is actually cold here today....no snow like on Christmas but pretty cold for us. I am heartily enjoying it.

How's the house coming, Alyce?? I was at Lowe's yesterday and though about you while I was looking at kitchen cabinets. You must be getting pretty close to the move-in date.

Hope the rest of you are doing well. Are you working too hard, Ro?

Well, guess I had better go have a visit with my sister.

Take care and God bless!

February 01, 2005 - Msg 26861: Here's a true story about how to handle drivers who honk unnecessarily. My father had a cousin, Mitch, a big old lanky country boy, who was slow to anger but had his limits. Anyway, one day in the early '40s, his old car died at a traffic light, and the driver behind him began to honk without ceasing. Mitch kept his cool, and finally got the car to start. Then leaving it idling, he unwound his big frame from his car, walked back to the other man's car, and without saying a word he reached in the window and turned off the ignition, pulled out the keys and threw them about 40 yards into a field of weeds. He then returned to his car, got in and drove off, leaving the dumbfounded man sputtering in helpless rage. Pretty funny, huh? True story, honest! Mitch was a hoot!

Well, it's cold, rainy and dreary here on my end of the porch today. Brrr! It's actually in the 40's, but it's so wet and gloomy, it just chills you right through. I think I'm going to crank up the fireplace, it's just that kind of a night.

Here's a cute story: when visiting my mom at the home on Sunday, I brought some of my wife's meatloaf as a change of pace from the inst-tutional food. As I transfered it from the plastic bin to a plate, I asked another lady at the table if she would like some of my wife's
meatloaf, and she responded "Oh no, I dont want to take it from your wife!" It's those lite moments like that which keep me goin'!
So innocent in her condition to answer that way.
Sad and funny all at the same time, so I accentuate the positive!

Woke up to snow this morning. Had almost 2", and it's still snowing lightly. Most snow we've had at one time all winter.

Today is my hubby's and my 14th wedding anniversary. Sure was a lot nicer day 14 years ago. Had nice temps in the 50's.

Hope you get to feeling better soon, Charlotte.

Spot - glad you're mending well. Hey to Miss Sherry!

Prayers for all - Have a great Groundhogs day everyone.

February 02, 2005 - Msg 26879: Now, pipeman, I have nothing personal against illegal aliens, but I will say this. I used to work in the admittance office of a hospital. If a patient came in whom we suspected to be an illegal alien, we could not refuse them care. So many of them would give us some money right away with the intent to pay the rest later. After the patient was discharged, we never saw the rest of the money. This happened so many times, that we took it for granted we would never get paid. This is one of the reasons why medical care has skyrocketed for everyone.

February 02, 2005 - Msg 26880: bam, bam rebuilding discount soapbox!
pipeman, i hear ya on the prop 200 deal.
Mexico is now trying to tell us how to run our country. Vinent Fox even published a booklet on how, when and where to illegally cross. I'm not kidding, the booklet was shown in our newspaper.
Also, they say that now they are moving east to come in thru texas. How many terrorists are also coming in??? Ok, not porch talk, but very real senario. As for the "hate" case in Philly,
the American Family Association states that 4 Christians were arrested for teaching what the Bible states about same s-x, even tho they had a permit to do so, and even told authorities what they were going to do. Lots of prayer needed.
Ok, blooy goes the box.
AFD, congrats on yout 14th! Whoohoo way to go!

February 02, 2005 - Msg 26882: 'Mornin', everyone! MDC, I'd love to know who "they" are who observed that the illegal aliens have moved east and are "starting" to come in through Texas. Honey, they've been coming in through Texas for many, many years! We're the Great Gateway to imagined riches. You couldn't swing a cat without hitting an illegal alien around here. There are thousands here in North Texas, and we won't even mention South Texas. In the grocery stores here, all the "specials" banners are printed in English and Spanish both. Every night at work I take care of new mothers who speak no English, but have arrived here to birth their baby. The only English most of them know is "Es gratis?" "Is it free?" Insurance? Money to pay? Ha! Some do have Medicaid, but we all know who pays for that. Oh, mercy. Don't get me started.

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

February 02, 2005 - Msg 26883: Ro, I hear ya, what I meant was that the ones who were coming thru AZ have heard of our new law and so have joined the thousands going thru TX!
If as many jobs had gone to Mexico as have gone to China and India, maybe some of the situation would be lessened. I may have mentioned this before, but as a high school kid in the 60's I worked at a canaloupe packing place here in the area, very few migrants, most guys like me.
That's why I dont buy the argument that they do the jobs that we dont want to do. Not so to this guy.
Oh well, enuf of that I guess.

February 03, 2005 - Msg 26900: Good morning - the news in Indiana is they caught the killer of the little girl who was on the Amber Alert last week. So sad. . .

No school today - we got enough snow to close my district. My kids had to go at the regular time. But they had a nice momma who drove them to school instead of riding the school bus. My oldest called me an angel this morning because I put his new patches (Air Force Academy and US Flag) on his denim jacket. He was proud! Be in prayers for the cadet who passed away at the Academy this week. He had a heart attack during PT. He was a freshman. Our friend who is a freshman was in the same squadron as he was. His family asked him to speak at the funeral this weekend.

I am off to the doctor. I will be told when my "womanly surgery" will be. Most likely it will be the 24th of this month. So I may not be chatting for a week or two. Hopefully - the boys will find out how much momma does do for them.

Well - I've chatted long enough - please take care! And since the Colts aren't in the Bowl game - I have to root for the Eagles (anyone but the Patriots!).

Anyone know of a good cell phone company? The contract for our current one runs out today, and I don't intend on staying with them(the time they overcharged us and I was lucky enough to find it kind of did it for me). Wifey tends to prefer ones with "plans" but I don't really care for those two-year contracts they stick you with so I have been looking at the pre-paid ones. I was initially thinking of going with Tracfone, but I have seen too many complaints about them so now I am not too sure. The only other pre-paid one we have around here is Virgin Mobile which looks more promising to me(not many complaints; good customer service), but I am still not sure. I think a pre-paid phone would be good for me because I wouldn't use it that often, although my wife is a different story as she seems to need to get on the phone as soon as she gets in the car, :) which probably accounts for our $300 overage of minutes on our current plan lately. :(
I would rather avoid contracts altogether, but if anyone is on a family plan with a certain carrier and they like them and they are economical, I would probably entertain the idea, as I know some of these have a deal where calls to someone else on the same service is free. I really don't understand why they need these contracts though. If you give people good quality and good customer service they are going to WANT to stay with you, aren't they? So why is that contract with the threat of a hefty termination fee needed? Unless they don't want to provide good service. Something to think about.
Boy, that almost sounded like something I might need to get up on the soapbox to say.*covertly slips the soapbox back under the porch* *or the bandstand*

Sterling - my hubby and I have AT&T Wireless (which just merged w/Cingular). We have two phones - 59.99 fee for the first, and 9.99 fee for the second (per month). We did have to sign a 2 yr deal, but we get 900 peak minutes (6am-7pm), and unlimited nights and weekends and unlimited mobile to mobile. We got a good deal on new GSM phones - Nokia 6010's (20 bucks a pop but we got rebates for that cost). We got our phones in October 2004, so some of the rebates and/or free phones offers probably differ somewhat. We have had AT&T Wireless for probably around 5 years or so total, and their customer service was ok, not sure how Cingulars CS is though.

February 04, 2005 - Msg 26918: Thanks for your cellphone suggestions, everyone. After talking with my brother and several of his church friends who were all using the same provider, we decided to go with US Cellular. After all, if you can't trust church people, who can you trust?! I mean, other than people who watch TAGS.:)
I think it is the best plan for us. We get 1500 anytime minutes; free incoming calls; free calls to anyone else who uses US Cellular; and camera phones which after rebate one of them will be free. All for about what we were (originally) paying with AllHel, er, I mean, AllTel.;) Around $70 a month. Oh, plus we added 3000 extra night and weekend minutes(my wife will need those) for an extra $4.95 a month, so it will only be a little higher. What's good is that the night minutes kick in at 7pm instead of at 9pm(who calls anyone after 9 anyway) like in our plan with AllHe... well, you know who.
I bit the bullet(not Barneys) and signed the 2-yr contract, but this plan just sounded too good. Hopefully it is just not too good to be true. Time will tell if it is.

Have a good day everyone!

February 04, 2005 - Msg 26922: I feel sorry for you, Rev. Jr. Oh, your company switched over? Then I feel sorry for them too. Does that mean you aren't paying for it? If you do, just be sure to check your bill every month, or have the company check theirs. And don't add anything to your plan or change plans while you are under contract with them as I read they have a nasty habit of automatically giving people a new 2-yr contract without telling them. Ok, enough Alltel bashing.

MDC, sometimes I'd like to go back to having a Sarah to connect your calls.
I do recall some tv stations signing off with the Star-Spangled Banner, usually when I used to stay up real late though. Do any tv stations do that now? I guess probably not because most just put on infomercials and never sign off.

Yeah, Charlotte, I don't know how to use my camera yet either! lol But good to hear you haven't had any problems with US Cellular yet.
