November 14, 2003 - Msg 16700: Steve in Ky, does your Henry and Janice Giles Foundation take outside donations? If so, I belong to an Internationl organization called The Questers. It's goal is restoration and preservation of historic landmarks and the like. If there is one in that area, they might consider helping in some way. Usually one must apply for monies to be granted to a project and it is voted on. Check them out at www.questers1944.org It's a pretty sparse website, but it tells a little bit about the organization. Emma has given me a couple of her books and I love them. As a matter of fact, Emma is the one who really introduced me to the world of reading. She and I have been friends for a long time and besides the love of TAGS, old books are one of the things that bind us together. Emma is an avorachious reader, you know!

November 15, 2003 - Msg 16725: Chattybaby, I'm pretty sure that your earlier posts were on another board, not on this porch. I read them all, and don't recall seeing your name before. There are several chat areas, all of which can be accessed from the home page. Why not just try entering the others until you find the one that looks right? That's not to say that you're not welcome here, because you certainly are, but we want you to get to where you're trying to go first. Then come back here any time you wish.

I got the fixin's for a pot of chili today, will probably make it tomorrow. Won't be deer chili, guess it will just be cow chili, but it'll be good! When I make chili, there's none of that recipe stuff, where it calls for a tablespoon or two of chili powder. I just start with lightly browning the meat, and add onions, garlic, tomatoes, tomato sauce, comino (cumin), a little cilantro, sometimes a can of chili beans, and the chili powder just gets dumped in out of the bottle. I just keep tasting and adding, tasting and adding, until sweat breaks out under my eyes, and then I know it's right! MMMmmmMMM! With a pan of cornbread and a big glass of tea, I'm all set! It'll be ready around suppertime tomorrow, so anybody that's over this way, just come on by.

Well, off to bed. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Ro, that cold weather you are having never made it this far South. We really haven't had ANY cold weather yet and I am dissapointed. Tonight it is warm and humid and we still are running the air conditioner. Hope it cools off by Thanksgiving.

I made chilli today because I thought it was going to get cold! Homemaker, I don't know if I would like 28 and windy for long, though.

I don't think I have one favorite episode of TAGS I just adore so many of them. I, like Ro, really laugh at the cow walking with the shoes on. How clever and I can't help wondering how they got those shoes to stay on that cow while she walked.

I love the Christmas episode! When Ellie and Andy sing Away In The Manger it just takes me back to my childhood.

Well, I am up at 4:30 am because my son just woke me because of his stuffy nose (get the Vicks) and now I am wide awake. Think I will try to go back to sleep. Later, friends.

November 15, 2003 - Msg 16734: Mornin' to the porch! Hazel, your education was worth every penny! I don't believe I've ever posted at Miss Crumps before but I do remember you have to register your name to chat at Sarah's. It's been awhile since I've been to Sarah's though. Mr. Wakefield, I believe Floyd does run Miss Crump's site so that may be why his email appears like you said. Anyway, I just watched the Andy Griffith Reunion Show again..started my day out right. Seeing Betty Lynn say how much she still enjoyed the show and still laughs every time she watches made me smile...I was a witness to that this past Mayberry Days. We stayed at the Hampton Inn and so did Betty Lynn and I walked down to the lobby late one night and there sat Betty Lynn by herself watching the show on tv and it was the scene where Andy, Helen, Barney, and Thelma Lou are out at the duck pond in the squad car (at night) and Betty Lynn was laughing out loud, sitting there by herself....it was a very poignant moment for me. And it's a memory that will stay with me from now on.
--Emma

November 15, 2003 - Msg 16735: Wow, Emma. That story clutches me. I wish I'd have been there. Betty Lynn sounds like a wonderful person. Someday I'm going to make it to Mayberry Days. Yep, I'm gona do just that! And it's not really "required" that you register a nickname, but if you want to be known as a certain name, and always use that one, then you must register it. Then no one else can use it. We have people post all the time over there, who I'm sure haven't registered. But the regulars are all registered, I'm pretty sure. And Romeena, if you are registered, and couldn't get on, it's barely possible that maybe you put in an extra space, or maybe used lower case when you should have used upper case. It has to be Exactly like when you registered. But Floyd (Ms. Crump) is always willing to help a feller out if you have problems. He's a prince! But also very busy, so maybe there is some delay in his responses.

Mr. Wakefield, as explained by Emma, Miss Crump is indeed Floyd. He runs the board there as well as this one, very very busy feller.
Can't imagine why you couldn't post over there Ro unless it's like Hazel said, or maybe you didn't punch in your password just right. I bet if you took a hot bowl of that cow chili over to Floyd, he'd fix you right up. Just don't let him get close with his sizzors though, the man gets a little snip happy sometimes.
Glad yer pappy is doing better homemaker.

Well, back to the yard work. I've got three more flats of posies to plant, and then that will be all, I hope. I'm about ready to quit digging and just sit back and enjoy the yard. The critters have just taken over, and don't even seem to mind when I'm out there. A squirrel sat about three feet away and watched me fill a feeder yesterday. Most of the birds fly away, of course, but they don't go far, usually just to another part of the yard. I love it!

I wasn't paying attention to the case in my password. Fixed that, and got on just fine. Thanks! Your education was worth every penny!

#16744, is that you, Mr. Wakefield, or is it Mayberry Girl? Either way, to try to answer the spelling question - I'm not sure that "paw" would be considered exactly proper, but not sure it's wrong, either. Spelling tends to evolve with usage, just as pronunciation does. Quite properly, I think it's "pa" and pronounced to rhyme with "ha-ha!" However, many of us have called our grandparents "Pawpaw", as opposed to "Papa", and who's to say that's wrong? Lots of kids called their daddy "Paw" in days gone by, and likely many still do. So, in my humble opinion, I'd say spell it the way you say it. I wish my third grade teacher had seen it that way, though. In some little essay she had us write, I mentioned my grandmother, whom I called "Mawmaw." The teacher marked it incorrect, changed it to "Mama", and took off two whole points! I cried all afternoon, because I almost never got graded off for my spelling! Humph! Makes me mad even today, just thinking about it. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong, and I certainly can be, but to be graded off when I didn't think I was wrong, well, well, humph! That's all I have to say!

Come on over, Hazel, and bring some of that cider! If it's still sweet, maybe it'll sweeten my disposition about now. The Plum says to please not forget the carrots.

Everyone have a lovely Sabbath, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

November 16, 2003 - Msg 16771: hazel and rest of porch=== i reregistered from mr wake field to mr carter. please get as many porchsters to contact floyd on this cause i am not alone. i go to the list of registered names, show one not taken, proceed to register and accepts it.a week later someone had it registered but not showing up. this is causing a complection you don't know who your talking to. if in a week a mr carter shows up he is going to bagdad, i aint changing. seriously we have an overload and that problem will grow unless floyd is aware of it and since he knows many porchsters this will add to the validity showing newcomers problem. thanks, your the cats meow mr carter

November 16, 2003 - Msg 16778: Good Morning all!
Mr. Wakefield--Siler City is down below Raleigh. Per Map Quest-It takes about 1 hr. and 50 mins.(98.5 miles) to go from Mt. Airy to Siler City. If anyone has the book "Mayberry My Hometown" by Stephen J. Spignesi, it has where Mayberry is suppose to be located on a map. I live in the county bedside of it--Granville County.

Did anyone see TAGS last night on TV land?? I can't remember the name of it. It is the one where Barney trys to make Matt and Neil leave from behind Dexter street- because they were "giving away produce". What was that long looking light colored squash??? I have asked everyone else who watches and no one knows exactly what it is??? Does anyone have the answer??

If anyone is looking for some "Special Elixir" for those cold nights or holidays-they still sale down in Johnston County. They are all the time busting up stills.
I may be able to even get a prescription for it.

November 16, 2003 - Msg 16779: Hey to the porch. It's a rainy, gray day here..a perfect day for some good homemade soup and a few Andy Griffith tapes. Hey to Hazel, jennieboone, Ky moonshiner, Romeena, County Nurse, Mr. Wakefield. Hey back to "secret admirer". Now that you've found this place again, you need to stick around. Actually, I think Floyd checks this site frequently and always comes over when somebody emails him that there's a problem here on the porch. I believe things usually run pretty smoothly over here. Thanks for doing such an excellent job with all you do, Floyd.

November 16, 2003 - Msg 16780: Mayberry Girl, I aint gona sit here and listen to our wonderful Floyd be insulted. He does the best he can. He works a full time job, plus he is an entertainer and participates in a lot of Mayberry events. Plus he maintains about 3 or 4 sites on the web. Not to mention he's a barber... And Mr. Carter (formerly known as Warren and Mr. Wakefield), I'm not going to e-mail him to tell him of all the problems as you requested. You're the only one I know of that is having problems! I've seen Mr. Wakefield on the list of registered names before - he's been on for months. So I'm not sure what list you were looking at. Good luck, I hope you finally figure it out!

November 16, 2003 - Msg 16808: Good evening, everyone! MPO, it's been a long time. Where on earth have you been? Don't be such a stranger!

I have no wish to start a moulage, but I would like to offer a comment here, something I learned from experience. When registering at Miss Crump's, be sure to note EXACTLY how you put down your email address/password. My email is not case sensitive, so it didn't dawn on me that it would matter when using it as a password. I registered my name, entered my email as my password, and thought I was fine. When I tried to return, it refused me, saying my name was already registered. It was, by me! However, I was using lowercase when I entered the password to get in, and had capitalized it when I entered it when I registered. I tried again, capitalized the password, and was welcomed with open arms. OK, that's my speech.

Spot, I love boiled p-nuts. My son in Florida took me on a seadoo cruise down the Oklawaha river, then up the Silver River to its spring-fed headwater. Absolutely beautiful! Part of the trip included a stop at a disreputable-looking shack and the purchase of some boiled p-nuts! Delicious! I loved them!

By the way, Spot, I've got some of that cow chili left, and it was good. Might have a corn muffin or two - come on by! Well, off I go. Have a great week, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

November 16, 2003 - Msg 16809: MPO, you're a sight for sore eyes.. well for good eyes too! We had a good day in the city..sat and talked to some friends for 4 hours! (in spite of Fred's snivelin" we still have a couple of friends) Didn't get much shopping done. (I think it was a conspiracy.)
I'd like to add my vote for Floyd being a prince of a fellow and that he runs this Porch just fine. And that there is NOTHING wrong with the names on this here Porch!

Make sure those peanuts are well drained, I don't want 'em dripping on the Plum on the way home, okay? Guess I'll have to share them with her, she thinks she has to eat some of anything I'm eating. How do you season those peanuts - or do you just boil them in a little salty water? The ones my son and I bought had some kind of Cajun type seasoning in them, a bit hot, and they were gooood!

November 17, 2003 - Msg 16820: hey to the porch=== since so many missed my slip up this weekend. since floyd has swept the porch,i will briefly bring you all up to date. 1.over the weekend i was alertedthat i was accidently registered as mr wakefield because someone had that name. so no warren bye me cause someone has that name. so with mr hatfield is back to the original owner/ so i followed ky moonshiner's lead and picked a name and registered it that noone else had. We are a friendly porch and we take offense to anyone stepping on our friend's toes. We don't need a moderator - Floyd does fine and he even trims sideburns almost evenly, Asa being the exception because his one ear lobe is a little off :)

November 17, 2003 - Msg 16828: Just stopped by to say hello. I have been pretty busy as usual and have not read the most recent posts, but I will get to them.

Hope everybody had a good weekend. It is still hot and humid here but we are expecting some kind of front tomorrow (just a weak one I think) but I will be happy to get rid of some of this humidity. When that wind comes out of the Southeast, like it does 90% of the time here, it is terribly humid. I really want to move but parents and husband's job is here and the parents need us now. I would just love to live farther North.

We are having our big Thanksgiving church dinner on Sunday night and I sure wish you could all be there. There will be lots of good eats, for sure! My husband volunteered me for the pie contest so the pressure is on. I think I will make my lemon meringue. If any of ya'll have a sure-fire prize winning pie recipe, please share. We are supposed to dress up like pilgrims or indians but I don't know if I can go that far or not! I don't even own a sewing machine.

Well, better go...lots to do. I am really looking forward to the Fredricksburg trip, Ro. Can't wait to see you in person (hope my kids don't frighten you off!). Baby Girl is real sweet to look at but she is certainly in her terrible twos.

Love to all,

I will be hosting 2 neices and 1 nephew along with my own son, so dinner tonight is hamburgers on the George Forman grill, and some fries done in the oven.
