September 01, 2001 - Msg 1985: Hello and welcome AngeFan. Hi Q-man.
Homemaker, my hubby has kin in Wenatchee too ! Small world. Heard it was mighty smokey and some ash falling when the fires were so bad.
Hope everyone has a good Labor Day weekend. We shopped today and took pizza to Mama's. Tomorrow and Monday we plan to clean house. In 12 days my uncle comes from California and I've let my house get so messy.
I used to play the guitar a little. My Daddy taught me, then I got all "Vain" and let my nails grow long and wouldn't play with him and now I can't, 'cause he is gone, playing 9 years in heaven now. Since then, I've had a bad wrist injury and really can't chord the notes too well. But I enjoy listening.

"Barney, it goes like this. You get a line and I'll get a pole, honey..." That Opie could sing.

September 02, 2001 - Msg 1986: Good Sabbath Porch! And welcome to AngeFan and Q-man.

You know, prayers really do get heard! Maybe not answered the way you wanted, and maybe not in the time frame you needed, but they ARE heard! I have a day job that just went full time (thank goodness). A woman recently on her own needs all the financial support she can get. Well, last week a friend of mine that owns a chain of restaurants asked me to whip up an advertising campaign for her! YES! I landed a real P-A-Y-I-N-G account! Thank you Lord!! Also I've been in a 1 br. apartment with almost no furniture. Then last week durring the big move from Tampa to Clearwater, the boss GAVE me a leather sofa and a dining room set! Lawwwwd, it just don't git any better than this.

So in thanksgiving, I'm whippin' up breakfast today:
Eggs any way you like em, grits, biscuts, gravy, "MEAT", and the coffe is simmering.

Y'all come now, ya hear? ~Mrs. Wiley

September 03, 2001 - Msg 2001: Hey Mrs. Wiley, that's a novel idea, just a novel idea about squad car for our fish tank. Maybe you should go into business makin' em. I was gonna name one of the fish Otis, but the water in our tank is "unleaded" and I'm sure that Otis would get tired of that after a while. Well how did everyone's holiday weekend go? I had a wonderful time with the darling boys and Charlene. She will start ballet lessons in the fall and is all excited about that, but like a true darling, the child has music in her blood. She played a little fiddle too while she was here and Konner shared "Go Tell It on the Mountain" with our congregation. I was mighty proud, but not too much so. You know the good book says "Pride goeth before a fall."
I got a hankering for some good egg salad. Does anyone out there make extry good egg salad? I'd like a sandwich and a big cold glass of sweet tea.
Doesn't that sound good?
Well I will run for now and make lunches and lay out some clothes for Little Opie to wear to school tomorrow. Let us hear about ya'll's holiday weekend.

September 03, 2001 - Msg 2003: Howdy, folks! I'm just so glad we have this ol' porch to visit now and then. Mavis, I wish I could bring my little Sugarplum to you. She wouldn't bite - if you pull her hair she just whips her little face around and lays her closed muzzle against your hand! I just know you could make her look gorgeous. I do my best, and it's pretty good, but I'm strictly an amateur.
Fun Girl, how'd the fiddle lesson go? You'll have to play for us very soon!
Folks, I'm about to have a spell over this DSL thing. When Internet America parted company with Covad/Verizon, all of us DSL customers supposedly got "migrated" to Earthlink/Mindspring. I duly registered, did all they asked, and was supposed to have my service switched over "seamlessly" on 8/10. Well, I still don't have DSL and no one seems to be able to help. One very kind tech has tried so hard, but still it doesn't work. Anyone have any ideas, suggestions, alternatives?? I'd be mighty grateful - might even bake you a lemon pie. Rafe, you're from my neck of the woods. Do you have a DSL, and if so, who is it? What I really want is AT&T Broadband - they're my cable TV provider, but they don't offer DSL here yet. Drat and double drat.

Come on folks, with as many picnicin' folks as there are in Mayberry, you can't tell me that not a one of you has a extry special recipe for egg salad? Fiddle lessons are pretty good. I am getting the note part pretty good, but when it comes to bowing, it don't sound quite as purty as my darling boys. But I have only had one lesson. I need to keep that in mind.

FG, I'd love to get back into pottery! If I can find a pre-made squad car I'll pain it up proper and definately send one your way! We have a store here where you can buy raw pottery and paint it yourself - they have a kiln. By the way - check with Dr. Mom before you start taking that Nyquil! Course, it couldn't hurt none! Let me know if you find a squad car for the fish tank. That would be just too cute! Glad to hear about all the blessings the Lord has heaped upon you. They say He is ready to give exceedingly abundantly more
than we could think or ask.

I am just so tickled to hear from Homemaker. Glad you had a special weekend. Hope your computer is up and running real soon. We miss you posting here every day.

Now where did Asa get off to? Did he hit a golf ball through the wrong person's window and now he's pushing up daisies? Asa if you are around, give us a holler and let us know that you are alright. And Mavis? Where is dear sweet Mavis? If you are ailing Mavis and you need me to pitch in and help out around the house, let me know. You were so kind to help me when my leg was actin' up.

Fun Girl I use a combination of miracle whip, sugar, vinagar, and celery seed for my dressing on potato salad and slaw. It is dandy! Don't know why it wouldn't work for egg salad. I also love Marzetti cole slaw dressing on egg salad and deviled eggs. It has to be the original - the light stuff is not for me. That may be why I look like Big Maude!

Once again, it has been proven that not only should one "call the man", but it needs to be the "right man". I think I've been talking to Gomer, and he just didn't know how to fix things. Finally got the right person, and he had things up and running in about five minutes. This after literally hours and hours talking to techs on the phone.
Hope everyone is feelin' fine. Things are going pretty well around here - would like to ask for your prayers, though. I'm having a stress test tomorrow, not expecting any problems, but a little prayer might be a good thing. September 07, 2001 - Msg 2062: Howdy, folks! Sorry about our Cajun friend, Joos-tain Wilson. He was one of my husband's favorites.
Stress test went fine, thank you, but can't say the same about the echocardiogram. Shows that the muscle wall between two chambers is fairly rigid, doesn't help with pumping like it should. Dr. says it may be the result of a heart attack I didn't even know I had. So, a catheterization is being scheduled to take a closer look. Not too happy about it, but so be it. Prayers, please.
Saw the motorcycle episode today. Honestly, when Barney puts those goggles on, and plops that helmet on his head, I just about fall out laughing. He looks like some kind of a bug! And don't you just love Andy's good-natured response when the fellas disconnected the sidecar? Andy just laughed it off, but Barney (of course) is livid. Too funny!
My granddaughter is familiar with Gomer, both from TAGS and Gomer Pyle USMC, but she had never heard him sing. I played a CD of his for her, and she just couldn't believe that beautiful, powerful voice belongs to Gomer!
Mavis, glad you're back, and glad you had the smarts not to be shark-bait. You must have thunk under your bucket on the way to the beach.
Have a great weekend, friends.--Romeena

September 07, 2001 - Msg 2063: Romeena I'm sorry to hear you are ailin' hope it goes well for you. My worst half had to have that done last year & it worried me to death. Nope I didn't take a think under the bucket, the worst half went fishing on the Cherry Grove Pier for 2 days & seeing a 9 ft Hammer Head Shark & a 6 foot Dusky shark AND a 4 foot Sand shark from the Pier was enough to make me stay out of the ocean! LOL It was a nice place tho. Cherry Grove Pier I had a good time (when it weren't raining that is) well off to bed for me, it's sure good to be back home on the porch.

September 07, 2001 - Msg 2064: Well Mavis, we are sure glad that you are home and you didn't get et by no sharks. Did you do any adventure sleeping while you were gone. I want you to know that Hazel is a plain wild woman with her ironing board and all her adventure sleeping. I never would have thunk it of her. Would you? I thought that we were gonna have to put cow bells around you and Asa's necks so we can keep track of you, but we are glad that you both turned up.

Romeena, sorry to hear about your test results. You will be in our prayers. I guess we should thank the Lord that them there doctors have the knowledge to find things like that and then correct them.

I'm heading off for bed now. Sweet dreams to all.

September 08, 2001 - Msg 2066: Ok. It's 2:15 p.m. now. Where is everyone? Did you change the meeting place again? - Hazel

September 08, 2001 - Msg 2067: I don't know. What do you want to do today, Hazel? Oh, I thought I'd just sit here in my rocking chair and talk to myself, Hazel

September 08, 2001 - Msg 2071: I'm right 'chere, A Cappella! A friend at last! - Hazel

September 08, 2001 - Msg 2072: 7:13 p.m. Mountain Time
Dear Diary:
Today I tried to talk to my friends on the porch. But no one would talk to me (except for A Cappella; and that was after 6:00 p.m.). I've been trying to think how I might have made everyone mad. At the last garden club meeting, I was real nice to Lillian; said her meatballs were tasty, and I even choked down two of em. (had to spit em in the bushes later). And I told everyone how nice their veggies looked (even when I thought my tomatoes and cucumbers were way better looking). I was real mannerized. I wasn't rude to anyone, except maybe Asa, but he always forgives me. I just can't figure it...
Respectfully submitted,
Hazel

September 08, 2001 - Msg 2073: Dear Hazel as far as I know nobody's mad at nobody, maybe they all just went out to enjoy some of the last of summer or something. didn't you hear them katydids hollerin? They may all be down at the duck pond or something.
Anyways, I'm here, so we can rock on the porch together, maybe go down to the fillin station & get a bottle of pop.
*Mavis

September 08, 2001 - Msg 2074: Goodnight everyone. Sorry, Hazel, not many folks were around. I had my computer unplugged while my husband cleaned the carpet. I just got it hooked back up about 9pm. He decided to rearrange the furniture, but some places the carpet ain't quite dry so it stil isn't back together. He did most of the work and I'm tired. Supervising is a difficult job.
Romeena, I pray your cardiac catherization will go well and that God touches your muscle wall and heals it. You are a precious person and I sure don't want you in any bad health.
Hugs for Sugarplum and keep a few for yourself.
Mavis, glad you are home all in one piece.

September 08, 2001 - Msg 2075: Night Porch!
*Mavis
any old tramps down there?

September 09, 2001 - Msg 2076: Mornin Porch, Hazel you and your diary are a HOOT! At least A Capella was there for awhile (or should I call him "Ah"?) I had lots of chores to do before Sabbath (no tradin' on Sabbath ya know) so that's why I didn't check in. I had to collect up money as quarterly taxes are due next week.

Romeena, you poor dear! I'll pray for your health, you just take it easy and keep thinkin' about Barney and his sickle. Keeping a laugh in your heart is mighty powerful! (I always thought he looked like Yertle the Turtle with his helmet and goggles)

Miss Ellie, there's nothin like a freshly cleaned carpet, is there? 'ceptin maybe having a husband to do the heavy lifting. Glad the computer is all back in one piece. Mavis, welcome home! Glad you were too smart for them sharks. Oh, and Asa, I saw something yesterday that you MUST get for your car: it's a decal with half a golf ball on it. You stick it on your car window, and dern if it doesn't look just like someone hit a ball and broke your window, and left the ball stuck in the glass! It's you, Asa!

September 09, 2001 - Msg 2078: Good Sabbath my dear porch friends. How could anyone be mad at you Hazel? You're to durn sweet.
If I could impose on you porch sitters though, for a prayer. On friday afternoon my Dad took a fall at his house and we had to rush him up to the hospital. Fortunatly he did'nt break his hip, but because he's been taking blood thinners he is bleeding internaly pretty bad. I think he is past the danger part, although his blood pressure is way low, sadly so are his spirits. He hates hospitals, and yesterday he said I wish I could just go to sleep and not wake up. He turned 84 this year and is really struggling with his inability to do the things he used to do. If you could remember us in your prayers I would be most thankful. You guys are great and I am so thankful for your friendship.
My prayers go out to you Rommena and your situation May God bless you and eveyone on the porch.

September 09, 2001 - Msg 2079: Good Sabbath Mrs. Wiley & jennieboone...Good Sabbath EVERYONE.

Another season of football is upon us ... WOO HOO !!! I tried adding "Rifle Fife" to my roster in my Fantasy Football Pool; but I couldn't find his name. "Bullet Passes" were what he was known for; I understand they STILL talk about him down at the field.

September 09, 2001 - Msg 2081: Asa, my prayers go up for your Dad and all your family.

September 09, 2001 - Msg 2083: Asa, reading your post about your dad made me so sad. It's hard to see our loved ones go thru stuff like that. I hope the doctors keep on top of things and that he gets better soon. Has he lived on his own up until this? Poor guy. My thoughts are with you and your family. - Hazel

September 09, 2001 - Msg 2084: A Cappella, my son is doing that fantasy football thing too. (He's 20) This is the first time he's done it, although he's been in football pools before. Let me know how you do on that... you might end up winning big bucks. It's gona be BIG. Jennieboone, have fun at Mayberry Days! You are so lucky to get to go. Have a good trip. - Hazel

September 09, 2001 - Msg 2087: Howdy, folks! Thanks so much for your kind words and prayers. Good friends mean so much. I'm sure I'll be just fine.
Asa, I'm sorry to hear about your dad's fall and low state of mind. I understand, because my dad is 83, and says the same thing your dad said, almost every day. He's in decent health, but my mother has passed away, he misses her, he can't drive anymore, and is in the early stages of Alzheimer's. He still enjoys life, does whatever he can, passes out tons of candy to the other folks at his retirement residence, but still is ready to go whenever the Lord calls, and hopes it will be soon. He made me promise that when he does pass, I'll just say "Thank you, Lord, for answering his prayer." How can I not respect that? Besides, in another 20 years, things may look a bit different to me, too!
Mavis, I'm glad you just let the sharks swim on by. Shows good judgment, if you ask me! Sharks belong in the ocean, I don't.
Mrs. Wiley, you're absolutely right. Barney does look like Yertle the Turtle in his goggles and helmet. I've always liked little Yertle, and can't believe I hadn't picked up on that!
My Earthlink DSL woes are improving, but not fully resolved. I have at least achieved a connection (finally, after four full weeks), but it doesn't hold up. It will stay connected for a few hours, then gets lost and I have to start over. Oh, well, it could be worse. I could be sitting at a manual typewriter, typing a letter to one person at a time! Mercy, am I the only one who remembers those days? --Romeena

PS - Saw Miss Peggy on a "Gunsmoke" ep yesterday. Heard and recognized the voice first.

September 10, 2001 - Msg 2094: Well. . .things are happening here on the porch. Prayers for you and your family Asa. Although my dad is only 78, his spirits tend to sag when he is in the hospital. Prayers to you also Romeena - things will work out fine. The Lord doesn't put anymore on us than we can handle.
Mavis it is so nice to hear your writing again. I am glad that you watched out for the sharks. We didn't need you as shark bait. Or your hubby either.
Congratulations on your Bible Study Floyd. That could be one way you could drum up some more business. . .you could read a little out of the Gospel and then you could do one of them advertisement sponsorship slots (this Bible study was brought to you through the kind folks at Floyd's Barbershop). It is just a hint.
Hazel - I am sorry that no one chatted with you. My 'puter is still ailing at home. I would have chatted with you.

September 10, 2001 - Msg 2095: Howdy porchsters. Thank you so much for your prayers and kind words. My Dad, after a real rough weekend is doing much better. September 10, 2001 - Msg 2098: Hey to the porch. Floyd I just saw one of your all time great performances tonight, The Gay Deciever. That episode is a classic, you wretch you. But I still think when you had the bookie barber helping you out was your best. The look in your eyes and excitment in your voice at the prospects of a two chair barber shop is priceless.
