August 06, 2001 - Msg 1553: GOOOOOD MORNING my porch sitting pals. I'm sorry I aint posted in a few days. But old Asa has been having a hard time. Nothin serious but very emotional. On Saturday I gave away my oldest Daughter's hand in matrimony. [great big huge sigh] One of the toughest things I ever had to do. Seems like just a few years ago she was my little babe sitting on my knee a gigglin. Now she is a beautiful 19 year old young women. What makes the whole thing bearable for me is her husband is a terrific fellow. She found herself a great husband and me a fine son. Plus they have bought a house about a mile away, so we will see them often. Sorry about ramblin on but it is therapetic. We have had company in town staying with us and our computer is in the spare bedroom so I haven't had much access to it. Thank you all for thinking of me in my absence. You guys are the best. I mean that.
I should have told you all about this sooner but this is our first to get married and I have really struggled with it. I am so close to my kids, lettin go just a little is really tough. I'm sorry for carrying on so. Thanks again for your thoughts and concerns. My company leaves tomorrow so things should be back to normal then.

Asa

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1554: Congratulations Asa or should I say congratulations to your whole family. It is nice to know that there are good dads in the world and you are one of them. You know us here on the porch - we just love to ramble. We'll be expecting to here about your future grandbabies too.
Where is Hazel this morning - she is always up by now.
Tom - what part of the country are you from. Just curious. i am glad I live in the country where I can feel relatively safe going out at midnight and checking goats. (Or go to Wal-mart without children.) That's where I am heading today.
Take care ya'll.

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1557: Welcome back Asa and congratulations! I can remember a day about six years ago when I cried almost six hours straight. Little Opie was off to school. Lord, dont the time just fly. I reckon that it won't seem to long before Little Opie will be finding him a pretty little thing and settlin' down. Right now he thinks mostly about driving a car. Then I will be PRAYING six hours a day. This week will be a busy one for us. We have to do all the last minute things before school starts and catch up on all the laundry. I am kinda missing all my kiddos from school and I want to see how much they growed over the summer. Little Opie is "bored" and can not wait for school to commence again. I will be glad not the hear the word bored again.

Prayers for your friends Mavis! I wanta hear another incant from Hazel. That last one was a good one. Maybe one for, um, lets see. How about getting rid of head lice. That's a problem that we see a lot at school. Nothing else seems to be working. So go for it Hazel.

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1558: Well I didn't make it to Wal-mart, maybe tomorrow. I need to get to the fish store as well and buy an algae eater for my oldest son's aquarium. Busy Busy Busy
When does your school start Fun Girl - our kids don't go back until the 20th.
Have a good evening - I'm off to the goats.

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1559: Aw, Asa, I did miss you. We was pondering where you were. Did you read up on it? Some thought you went to Raleigh; one to Siler City; there was a rumor you were on a stake out; some thought you were maintaining your bullets or your tin foil collection. And Fun Girl, bless her heart, thought you was passed out on the 8th green. I myself was so distraught I could'nt even post this morning. Congratulations on your daughters wedding! Good to have you back. - Hazel

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1560: Hey to everyone. Its hot here, way above 92. Its DANG hot!

Hope everyone is keeping cool!

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1561: Hey Idelle. Hiya Hazel. Good to see you again. I went to the archives and saw all the postings. I'm glad I was missed. I do like to take some time off for my bullet maintenance, but I usually hold off till we have a Glenn Ford picture show in town. How's your weeds? Mine are sky high. Weeds 1 Asa 0. Oh well at least the crops are "kickin butt". It is so nice to see all of you again. Talk at ya later.

Asa

August 06, 2001 - Msg 1562: Hey ya'll! Our school starts up again on the 15th of August. I saw several of the kids at the library today and they asked if I was returning. I said I'd be there. I don't know if they thought that was a good thing or not. Please remember the Suter family in your prayers. One of my favorite little girls who was in 5th grade last year was in an auto accident and her father was killed and her mother paralyzed. She is physically doing okay, but my poor gal. She is such a sweet thing. One of the good ones. She and her friend would sit all during recess and talk to me. My heart is breaking for her.

Little Opie is having a friend over for one last sleep over tomorrow night. They will most likely stay up til the wee small hours playing Nintendo. Maybe we will even order pizza. That's high living in this town.

Hey Mavis did ya work up and incant for head lice yet. If ya can't think one up I guess I'll have to get the recipe HOMEMAKER uses on her goats.

Hope ya'll have a pleasant evening and a good morning tomorrow. I am with Miss Ellie, I ain't gettin' up early enough to compete with you all.

It is all carpeted and I have fixed myself an office in the shower room in case I get hot under the collar with either the principal or my husband I can take a shower and cool down. I might need a shower because there is no AC back there. Oh well it could be worse.

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1580: Hi all. I'm afraid I don't feel like any joke cracking tonight. I was putting grass clippings in my water rows in the garden, and must of bent over funny and threw my back out. Now I'm walking crooked. ouch. It hurts a lot. I know at least a couple of you can relate. (I can't remember if it's Mrs. Wiley or Miss Ellie, but I know somebody else has a bad back.) I've had problems off and on with my back for years, and I guess I should be used to it. Welcome to the porch, Auntie M. Asa - save me a piece of corn. - Hazel

Opie: I had this great big juicy worm...
Aunt Bee: Opie! Not while we're eating.
Opie: Can I tell you about the SLUG?
Aunt Bee: Opie!

August 07, 2001 - Msg 1581: Aww Hazel. Them bad backs are terrible things to deal with. I ruptured a disk in my lower back about 4 years ago, so I can relate to your pain. I will not let no surgeon get near me if I can help it. I've heard to many horrer stories. In fact my doc said surgery would only give me a 1in4 chance of it gettin any better. Bad odds if you ask me. Take it easy, relax, watch some Andy tapes, and leave the weedin to your hubby. Hope you feel better soon.
Asa

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1582: Well Homemaker, I am glad to hear that your classroom isn't gonna be half bad. The speech room at our school is about an 8x8 room and is located right next to the boiler room. YUCK!!!
We have our staff meeting on Monday and a potluck dinner at the home of one of the teachers on this Friday, and then on Thursday, I have a staff meeting at the YMCA for the Before School Care program. I have got to get used to getting up with the roosters, but I will say that it surely will be a struggle.

Oh Hazel honey, I know how those bad backs are. I had a disc removed ten years ago and I can't say that it improved the quality of my life. Course the doctor told me to get my weight down to 130 and I will tell you right now that has not happened. They say though that Vitiman C every 5-6 hours is supposed to really help and use ice instead of heat when you are in pain.

As far as the slugs go, I heard a story from my old granny about how to keep slugs out of your garden. Just pour a beer around the borders of your garden and they will stay away. They will not even cross a line of beer. Don't ask me why or how, but they say it works.

Welcome to you auntie m. We hope that you will make yourself to home here.

Fun Girl

August 08, 2001 - Msg 1583: Mornin Fun Girl Sounds like summer vacation is about to end fer ya. Gettin up with the roosters will take some gettin used to. Them slugs must be opposed to hard drink I reckon.

Good afternoon to everyone - been out with the goats this morning. They are hot, we are hot, all God's chillun must be hot. The weatherman is promising some cool air for the week-end. I hope so - this is almost unbearable.

Life is too sweet

Such goin's on, such goin's on... *Mavis is gettin' mauled by Cujo and havin' to type with fat fingers, Auntie M's got slugs and ever'body's givin' her advice on how to get 'em gassed, Asa is pickin' his corn and eatin' it right in front'a ever'body (I wonder how many tech support calls have been made this week to find the cure for slobber on the keyboard?), Hazel is walkin' crookid after spreadin' grass around her garden (you always gotta be different, huh Hazel? Ever'body else gives their slugs beer, but you gotta go and try to give 'em... somethin' else), Fun Girl and homemaker are gettin' ready for school (I guess homemaker's a teacher when she ain't makin' a home), O'Malley ain't in Deeetroit like ever'body thought, ~~Leon comes blowin' through, wavin' howdy as he passes by, Mrs. Wiley is showin' off her fontin' smarts by leavin' her italics runnin', and Floyd and ~De§~ and Jelsik drop in for a visit, and TOM comes a'callin' with another upliftin' poem, and I don't know WHAT all. MY, ain't this a friendly town! I reckon ever'thing's been said already, so I'll just say...

I'll see ya.
*Rafe Hollister
ANDY: "...And then it happened."
OPIE: "They fired the gun!"
ANDY: "They fired the gun. And the shot was SO LOUD, it was heard clear 'round the world."
BARN: "Oh, get OUT."

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1618: Morning to the porch! Can you believe it is little ol' me up first this mornin' I am having a terrible aching in my feet and when I try to sleep it feels like electric shock going through my shoulders and from my hips to my toes. Been feeling this way for a couple of nights now. I hate going to the dad burn doctors cause all they say is "LOOSE WEIGHT!" Oh what's a body to do?

Today I am off for Michigan. I will see my darling boys play in the bluegrass festival at their county fair. And they are playing, "Boil Them Cabbages Down." I,as their proud aunt, may have to take my certified Brisco Darling pot likker jug and play along with them. I sure am proud of those two fellers. They ain't but 7 and 5 years old and they Daddy plays banjo but he is in his late thirties.

Little Opie's swimming lessons at the Y start again soon after school starts. He has gotten to be a pretty strong swimmer. I like to keep him in at least one extra cirricular activity. I want him to have an interest and something that he is good at when he gets older. A hobby or ability that he shares with other people that will keep him from falling in with the wrong crowd.

Well I think that I will try to rest my weary head once again. Have a good morning to you all.

Fun Girl

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1619: "Got time to breathe, got time for music.
A one and A two."

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1620: Morning all! That's a wise parenting strategy Fun Girl. I know your SO proud of your darling boys! And by the way, you'll be real happy with your Kenmore. I love mine - most expensive washer ever made, though. I wanted to get the lower priced one, but the hubbie was in a hurry and wanted "the best" (funny, he didn't do the washing). We had a Kenmore before that one and it was over 25 years old before it kicked the bucket - rusted in this Florida weather.

Hey to Rafe - good to see you in these parts again! I love that BOO as well. Gomer always had great body language.

~Mrs. Wiley

"Will you look at that? MILDEW! Now, there's nothing I can do about MILDEW!"

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1621: Fun Girl, I have a Kenmore too, and it's a good one, I think you'll be pleased, although why you didn't just "call the man" to come and fix the old one I'll never know. Good to see you, Rafe, I was wondering where you were. - Hazel

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1622: You know, all this talk about school starting has been making me think. (I can be serious, you know). I kind of miss when my kids were young and I had to hurry around getting them off to school; going to basketball, soccer, softball games and all that stuff. It was fun and I miss it. But now that those days are past...it sure is nice! It's nice worrying about only getting me off to work. I guess it's part of life's cycle and moving on to the next thing. Like how to get a 20 year old to leave the roost. - Hazel
(Boy these drugs sure do set me to pondering about stuff)

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1623: Good Morning all. I swear you are all so witty for being so early in the day. Good to hear from Rafe. You be right about the sloppy keyboard. How's the back attack Hazel? You doin better?

August 10, 2001 - Msg 1626: Goodmorning friends. TOM, I'm sorry to hear about all the meaness in Ohio, we have plenty here in my corner of Mayberry. But, TOM, those beautiful poems are so up-lifting, thank you.
Hazel @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@, here are some miracle pills. Mavis, I'm praying for your friend's daughter and your finger.
Hope all are well. It's hot here too. Hot all around the nation it seems. If I didn't know better, I would think I was living in that place you never see mentioned on tombstones.
I've enjoyed reading all the posts.
