She lived her later years in Siler City, North Carolina (about 45 minutes west of Raleigh). I read that she left a large part of her estate to the Siler City Fire Department as they would frequently stop by and check to see how she was doing. Her rationale was they seemed to be the only ones who cared about her. She did live with several cats I was told by someone who was close with the police department.
