June 01, 2020 - Msg 114555: Well Asa...I was about ready to buy a new weed wacker because my gas powered Bolen’s one was giving me so much trouble starting, I hadn’t used it in about 3 years. So I was about ready to buy a battery one when I was feeling sporty today and decided to dig into it for one last try...Well I do have to brag a bit, but I got that thing purring smooth and whacked those weeds until I ran out of line...Drat!

It as you said before, the main problem is today’s ⛽️ gas. With all the Ethanol in it these days those small engines just don’t cotton to it...Amen?

But it DOES makes a guy feel good when ya can strike a blow against having to “Call The Man!”...10-4?

June 02, 2020 - Msg 114557: Alright GF. I am proud to call you my brother. Yeah, the stuff they call fuel today is a joke. Even using stabilizers is ineffective it seems. And Honda power equipment seems to really struggle with the stuff for some reason. Glad you got it running good.

Now do you guys like it mystery? Last night when I was getting ready for bed, I was in the bathroom off our bedroom when I saw something in the sink. It was a piece of broken plastic but from what was beyond me. Debbie had no idea either. I looked over everything in the bathroom but came up empty. Finally this morning I figured it out. It was a part of the auger on the ice dispenser from my fridge. How did it get in my bathroom sink you ask. Glad you asked that. Every night when I go to bed I have a mug of ice water with me. In the morning I dump the now melted ice in the bathroom sink. Apparently the previous night a piece of the auger broke off and it ended up in my mug and then in the sink. I pulled the ice storage container and checked the auger and walla, that is where it came from. I'm just glad I did not swallow it.

MDC I do have an AO Smith water heater. That is pretty good longevity. Of course now that I have bragged on it,it will fail me. I did not ever drain it off. I had a half dozen of water heaters at work I would drain off every year and it seems it didn't do anything to prolong them. But who knows. GF, what brand is your new one? Just curious.

Phx was finally quiet tonight, but we are also under an 8 pm curfew.
It is the fisrt time in AZ history that that has been done.

ASA, Our first water heater in this house was an A O Smith, and it lasted 20 years! Then I had a Rheem for 14, and now a Reliance since 2014. I have never
drained any of them except to drag them away. When I have had to hire plumbers for various things they all offered to drain the water heater, and I just say "Nope, I'm good." ha
Oh, BTW, you were speaking to GF about ethanol in gas. My Nissan "Third Party" has a 'flex fuel' engine that can take both if needed.

We have our little challenges but compared to past months things are so much better here. Erin is still coming along and I woke this morning to a terrific surprise! She had totally cleaned out and organized my kitchen pantry. Yay.

I am trying to occupy my mind today with gratitude. The events of the past few days are scary and discouraging but I try to center my kind on what is true, and the truth is that there are many more caring and compassionate Americans than evil ones. Enough said.

June 02, 2020 - Msg 114561: Good morning, porch! It's a perfectly beautiful day, so beautiful that it's hard to believe the ugly things that have been happening. So, like Boo, I try to ignore the ugly, as much as I can. I remember Philippians 4:8 - “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” I cannot control the rest of the world, but I can control my own behavior, thoughts and attitudes.

There is a charming little story that made the rounds a while back. It seems that a loving father gave his young son a gift, a double-sided jigsaw puzzle. One side was a map of the U.S. and the other was a picture of a man. The father's plan was to teach his son some geography, and it would be challenging, because the map wasn't cut on the state lines. The boy surprised his father by doing the puzzle very quickly. When asked how he did it, getting all the states in proper order so quickly, the child replied that it was easy. "I just turned it over, and put the man together first. When I got the man right, the country was right."

On the subject of water heaters, I have two Bosch tankless heaters, and absolutely love them. This house is too sprawled out to have just one heater. Either the kitchen or the bathrooms would have a very long run for the hot water to make, so my dad just plumbed it for two, each near the most-often used site. We had tank heaters for many years, but about ten years ago or so, I knew the old ones were nearing the break-down age, so just replaced them. Home Depot had a close-out sale on that year's Bosch models, and I got two for the price of one. Ted installed them for me, I now have more storage room in their closets, and my gas bill dropped to the minimum charge in the summer. They don't sit there heating water for hours when it's not being used, they heat up immediately when the water is turned on, and deliver hot water through as many showers as there are guests in the house! So far, I have zero complaints about them. Oh, and they never have to be drained.

Well, better get dressed. Gloryosky, Eloise and I have appointments for pedicures this morning! I was starting to poke holes in the toes of my shoes, so I'm glad to be getting this done. As a diabetic, all I need is an ingrown toenail! I can no longer do my own, my back won't let me bend that much, so I just enjoy the luxury of a gentle pedicure. Those sweet little girls do a beautiful job.

After our toes are made beautiful, we'll go to Pie Five for a build-your-own pizza. They are sooo good! I'll have them build two, will eat half of one of them at lunch, and bring the remaining half and the other pizza home. The half will be dinner tonight, and the whole one will feed me tomorrow. Yes, they're that good. The one I eat tomorrow will be the best, because of my magic reheating process. A little olive oil in a non-stick skillet, cover it, heat on low heat for about 5 minutes, and it tastes better than fresh! The olive oil imparts a delicious flavor to the crust, and makes it crispy instead of tough like the microwave does. Also, with the heat coming from below, the toppings aren't baked to mush. Try it! You'll like it!

Trinket knows something is up, that I'm leaving, and is walking around me in little wary circles, hoping to avoid capture, but I've got her trapped. She can't get out of this room, so no more fifteen minute chases when I need to leave. Her life isn't all that hard. She'll be in my bathroom, with food, water, a cuddlebed, several toys, and the a/c at a comfortable level. Lots of little dogs would be happy to spend a day like that, but she thinks she's put-upon, the ungrateful little wretch. :) Blessings, everyone! Stay safe! --Romeena

June 02, 2020 - Msg 114562: Romeena, when it comes to anything Bosch, I'm a big fan. Most of my power tools are Bosch. Paid a bit for them, but that was back when I had a tool allowance so it was in a sense free money. They just seem to last forever.
Do you have a water softener? I was thinking going tankless for the same reasons you mentioned, everything spread out. But one of the concerns I have had with them is that they require descaling yearly. Is that anything you have had to do? I know at work with out pressure washer, we would have to descale it every few years. And I have read that the tankless systems tend to have the same issue. But soft water helps to reduce those issues. Just curious if you have noticed reduced pressure on the hot water side.

Boo, I have to put myself in timeout concerning reading or listening to the news. And a good part of it is because there are very few news sources I trust. But I loath the media as a rule. So like you, I try to count my blessings. I find I have lots to be thankful for also.

GF, Have you ever used a product called "Mechanic in a bottle"? My parts place that I buy my small engine parts from sell it. You mix it in with some fresh fuel and let it run for a spell. Supposed to clean up the carb pretty good is the claim. I just need to buy ethanol free gas to put in the small engines I suppose. The only station that sells it is a pain to get to is the only problem. But worth it I imagine.

I have sure enjoyed watching the Mayberry RFD eps on METV. I have DVR'd them. Mayberry sure changed in them. I watched one yesterday where Millie had been chosen as the best dressed woman in the County. Well she went and bought some new dresses, and they were long dresses. Ones that came down to the ankle type, but stylish. The men folk hated it. Finally the Town had a get together and had invited some well known woman who was a fashion expert to come and present the award to Millie. This woman arrived wearing a skirt that left not much to the imagination. Of course the fellers loved it and her dance card was full all night while Millie and the other women just watched from afar. At the very end you see Millie walking down the street in a short skirt, getting a lot of smiles from the fellers. Yep, a different feel for Mayberry by 1870 lol

Well off to putter outside before it gets to hot.

Sorry, I havent been around lately as I have been spending some down time away from the computer. I, too, had to take a break from the news. It's pretty refreshing to walk out of my house to open land and cows, ponds, tractors running in the distance.
And then trying to tap dance around this blasted virus.

hey, a funny thought....we all know how the same people did different characters on TAGS. I had a thought of us changing our names on here for a week or so. Not that we could do it as it would be probably pretty confusing unless we put our old name with our new one.
For example, Asa could be Mr. Schwump and sign his name Mr. Schwump/Asa.
Not suggesting we do it, but I figured if some of the same people could be different characters, why couldnt we? :)

Nice sunny day here. Good sittin' out weather. Small chance for rain and tstorms tomorrow, but not much.

Well....bet hit some housework. Have a great, safe and sane day. And stay away from that news! It tain't worth it.

June 02, 2020 - Msg 114566: I know just how you feel, ASA (concerning the news). Very frustrating times. I often think about how great it was when you sat down at 5pm, turned on the tube (which only had 3 channels), and you heard Walter Cronkite give you the news, straight to the point. Im sure there were many things that got left out back then but you didn't have the anguish of always wondering if anyone was giving it to you on the level.

I had some observations while watching TAGS this week that I wanted to share with you. I watched the episode yesterday in which Mr Jackson tries to play his tricks and sends miss Boswell to gather "dirt" on Andy. I love the scene at the hearing when Barney talks about how Andy has been trying to teach him, as a law man, to not go so much by the book but by the heart. Oh, if all law men felt this way! Today I was watching the ep in which Otis has told a fib to his brother about working as a deputy. When he confesses, immediately Barney starts in on him about how wrong he was impersonating an officer! He jumps right in there with the infractions Otis has committed while Andy just says, "Just a minute.." and lets Otis continue to explain his reasons for such. When I observe the characters of Barney and Andy, I see religion vs. love. As I have mentioned before, I have a hobby of studying religion, particularly those considered to be Christian institutions and after all these years I am coming to some conclusions (you may differ in opinion than me and I have absolutely to issue with that. We are all free do disagree and love one another anyway): I have concluded, that not any of them has everything right, and not any of them has everything wrong. Many religious institutions bind heavy burdens to men's backs and tell them that they have to follow a list of rules or beliefs or else...h#ll, shunning, outter darkness, or eternal death, whichever they believe in. So many go only by the book and not the heart, when, as I understand it, Jesus gives us one command besides to believe in him: Love God and love your neighbor. I'm thinking as believers in God we need to go less by the book (rules/law/religious traditions and commands), and more by the heart. Something that comes to mind is this: we have all had hard difficulties in life. Some of you have spouses who are very ill and have suffered for years. You have prayed for healing but it hasn't happened, so in your love for God, you rest in his peace and trust him when its hard. Then, a well meaning Christian who takes every word of the bible very literally in any given situation tells you, "The bible says by his stripes we are healed, so it is God's will for your wife to be healed in this life. You must not have enough faith". In my case, it would be having to hear very well meaning Christians beat my family nearly death with the bible verses on being gay. Few ever step back and think, "Wow, how hard it must be. Maybe I will seek God's wisdom on how to help instead of slamming them with bible verses that they have already heard a hundred times." Maybe show understanding and love and let the Almighty deal with the heart as we pray for them. I see so much hurt and division in the country but not much understanding. Everyone just wants to be right, "by the book", and so many think their opinions are the only right ones and lock their minds to listening to the stories of others and maybe gaining some loving perspective. I really want to be an Andy in this world. Thoughts?

Romeena, poor Trinket just doesn't like to be separated from her Mama. My little darling does ok alone but now and then demolishes one of Sean's shoelaces if he leaves a shoe out while we are gone. lol

Boo

June 02, 2020 - Msg 114567: Good afternoon, porch. Boo, reading your notes above, my mind immediately went to John 8:7. Jesus has just broken up a crowd that is preparing to stone a woman to death for the sin of adultery. His words: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. Couple that with this scripture: Romans 3:23 -- For all (get that? ALL) have sinned and come short of the glory of God. God does not see degree of sin, He just sees sin, and He says all are guilty. Therefore, it behooves me to tend to my own soul, and not be passing judgment on others. That's God's job.

None of this is to remove the responsibility of maintaining law and order from the shoulders of our lawmakers and law enforcement. Without laws, which ideally are based on God's laws, and the judicious enforcement thereof, we would have anarchy. However, it must be tempered with mercy, and administered with an even hand. No special privileges based on social status, color, wealth or anything else. Boo, you're absolutely right. In the tragic case that's before us these days, that officer and the others standing by, did not show any pity, any compassion for the man they had in custody, they just "restrained" him to death. They should be judged accordingly. God said to do no murder, and that pretty much looked like murder to me. I'm glad it's not up to me, that my opinion doesn't control the outcome. It should be left to the powers that have been ordained to handle such matters. That, too, was set up by the Lord, and we are told to submit.

I have questions too, and don't pretend to have the answers, but what little understanding I do have tells me to be careful when I vote, and to do my best to live peaceably with all around me. It tells me to protest when I think protest is merited, but to do so peaceably. All of that is a pretty tall order, and is just about all I can manage.

Blessings, friends. --Romeena

How is Christina, MDC? Saying a prayer for her.

Been keeping busy these days. We have a 2 year old back in the house for a few days, and mercy, the child came back from her Tia's house spoiled! We had a couple of raging screaming fits here yesterday. She will have to unlearn some things. Come Sunday, there will be no one living here except the four of us. I am really looking forward to it!

I ventured out yesterday and attended a Black Lives Matter rally here in my small town and I am so glad I did. It was totally peaceful and took place in front of the police department. The news reporters were there and while I am standing there my phone rings. I answer it and it's Sean: "Mom! I told you not to go to that rally!". I asked how he knew I was there and turns out he was at a friends house who happened to turn on the news and it was being shown live. lol He had nothing to worry about, though. I never would have stayed if there was anything going on that was unsafe. It was a rather small gathering and everyone had masks on. After the news cameras left, everyone circled up and there was dialogue as people expressed their hopes and frustrations. I heard the older black men talk about how the problems could be solved in the voting booth and I heard the younger one's express their frustration with the system. I learned something and I thought it was a beneficial gathering for our community. Far more white citizens turned up than black citizens..of course we have a fairly small black population here. So, that was my experience yesterday.

I hope you are all well and experiencing the peace of God in these troubled times.

MDC, Glad things are going better for Christina. Hope that continues. Question. Is it hot enough for you?? lol But it's a dry heat. HA!
We are in the upper 90's here today but a big cold front is coming in tonight they say. Highs by Sunday in the 59's with the snow level dropping to about 8,000 ft. We are about 5,000 ft so should just be rain here in the valleys.

Maude, I'm glad you are coping with things. I know how difficult it is going to be going through her things. You just want to hold on to everything for sentimental reasons but you know you can't. Prayers for you.

Boo, If Erin needs the work send her to my house to clean up my pantry. She'll run into the night screaming. lol

Wonder what the odds are that we could get another one like Harvey roll over us again? Anyone have any idea? Im telling you we are still recovering from that and its been almost three years. We have a nice new water tower now (you may remember our last one went down with Harvey). The new one is nice and has a redfish painted on the side..well, the tail of a redfish anyhow and I have no idea why. I guess people catch a lot of redfish in the bay here. The United States educational community has now ZERO credibility with me! It was bad enough they are sweeping history under the carpet because it doesn't fit their agendas, but THIS has crossed the line! WAY over the line!

He was a human being, and as such, was entitled to due process of law. Given that, he would likely have served more prison time, at taxpayer expense, but he would have lived. Under our own laws, he had apparently done nothing to earn the death penalty, yet that officer appointed himself as judge, jury and executioner. The whole thing was beyond horrible, unlawful, and never should have happened. However, I cannot find anything to convince me that he should be honored with scholarships in his name. If I'm missing something here, if there are facts that have not yet come to light, then I wish they'd make their appearance, and help me to understand what on earth these schools are celebrating!

If you read the various accounts of Mr. Floyd's life and his personal conduct, you begin to wonder if he had an evil twin. One account may paint him as a career criminal, threatening a pregnant woman with a gun while his accomplices ransacked her home, had been imprisoned several times, etc. Another refers to him as "a gentle giant", kind and helpful, beloved by all. Very confusing. This is why he should have had his day in court. The one thing I'm sure of - he didn't deserve to die face down in the street, with a sworn peace officer's knee pressing on his neck. America is better than that, or it should be. I think we can all agree that the officer should never have been wearing a badge. Still, he too should have his day in court, and I'm sure he will. That's more than he gave his victim.

But a scholarship honoring Mr. Floyd? Really? --Romeena

June 06, 2020 - Msg 114594: The autopsy report the FAMILY requested showed he was high on drugs WHEN he was arrested. I agree. The police were totally wrong. My wife said, "If he was that big of a problem, they should've called a paddy wagon and transported him that way. Just eliminate him by arrest, not death.
But do we know he would've got his life together at some point? No, we don't.

June 06, 2020 - Msg 114595: So we are talking about Mayo again? I don't eat it but my family likes Dukes best. If I am making potato salad for the family, Miracle Whip is the only way to go (right Sarah). I actually made some potato salad today to use up my potatoes before they got old. I made mustard potato salad and left out the mayo or miracle whip. I like to add sweet relish and chopped dill pickles, too, mustard and honey mustard, some seasonings. I like to throw in some chopped celery but I am the only one who likes that so I left it out. Do any of you add celery seed to your potato salad? I tried it once and loved it. I also tried putting it in my coleslaw and it was wonderful.

John Masters, there is so much going around but I really wonder if I can believe it all. We can, though, be happy that there will be a scholarship to help some deserving child who might otherwise end up in trouble like George Floyd did. Im trying to find the silver linings these days. :) I'm really praying, too. I find that there are so many things I see on the news these days that I later find out are wrong and I wish I hadn't gotten worked up over it. Breathe and when you can do good, do it. Love is still the answer.

Boy, has it been hot here! It shouldn't surprise me, though. I am so glad we didn't get a hurricane so no complaints.

Think I'll go put my feet up and maybe watch some TAGS. Escape reality! ha

Just a quick hello tonight. Good Sabbath to all.

June 07, 2020 - Msg 114597: Hello, Porch!
Why are some of you livid or uptight that a Missouri university is naming a scholarship after George Floyd?

June 07, 2020 - Msg 114598: Good Sabbath all.

Yesterday I watched Return to Mayberry. It was so nice to see so many of the original folks come back, although the story line was pretty bad. lol It was great to see Barney and Thelma Lou finally get married. And I got a huge lol when Andy and Barney were remembering the time they had gone dancing with the "fun girls". Andy said they sure liked to dance close and Barney replies "Ill say. She bent my badge"! lol

Boo, what kind of tater do you use for your tater salad? And Sarah and Boo, why Miracle Whip in tater salad? Aspiring chef wants to know. :) I have only tried tater salad once and it was not bad. I'm not sure why I haven't done it more often cause I love a good tater salad. And I'll match my cole slaw with anyone by golly. lol But have never used celery seed in it.

I decided to wait till today to make my bean soup. It's sitting in the crock pot as we speak and smelling pretty dang good. Nice cool day today so it's a perfect day for it. Just had a thunderstorm roll through and got some much needed rain. The mountains are still cloud covered but I'm sure when they lift I am going to see fresh snow down to the benches. Gonna get cold tonight.

I've been watching my Dragnet and Adam 12 DVD's as of late. So many TAGS folks show up. John Masters is a regular almost on Dragnet (usually as one of the Lab boys, but once as a Judge). I saw Otis last night, drunk as a skunk driving a convertible Corvair. Malloy and Reed run him in. Miss Mayberry is in a few also. She played the sweet little old lady part so well. I know Helen shows up in the later episodes as Malloy's girlfriend. I guess Helen liked a man in a uniform. Glad it wasn't a bank guard uniform she cottoned to. :)

June 07, 2020 - Msg 114599: Good one, Asa! lol!

June 07, 2020 - Msg 114600:

ASA--so Helen was runnin' with Malloy. ha
I've only made potato salad a few times. Use russets, and usually Best Foods mayo. Recently, I bought a heinz mayo on sale, but i won't do that again! :)
JPT, my guess is because more is coming out about him.
But I like what Boo said about someone being helped, and how love is the answer,if we can all get on board with it. Jesus' 2nd commandment to us all.
I saw a piece on the news tonight of an older black lady crying over the fact that the looters burned all the stores in her neighborhood where she could only get to to shop for staples. A white woman started a GFM page, and helped her out. It showed the two of them meeting. So good to see these days.

Things are progressing with Christina. Please keep up the prayers.
Thanks a heap! :)

June 08, 2020 - Msg 114601: Good morning, Porch

Sunny, sunny, but that's going to disappear later as we get some of the remnants of that tropical storm coming this way. Supposed to get heavy rains later on tonight.

Sarah - Yep, my wife is a mayo hotdog person. Nothing but mayo. No ketchup or mustard. Period.

Asa - Yeah, that Return to Mayberry storyline was pretty bad. Almost ranks up there as bad as Goober's "talking dog."

JPT - Read message 114592. Maybe a scholarship in David Dorn's name would've been more appropriate.

MDC - Prayers, my friend.

Better go. Chores are calling about as loud as Barney's voice exercises!

Have a great day, folks!

June 08, 2020 - Msg 114602: JPT, I don't believe we've met. You asked a rather astonishing question in #114597. To answer, I'll just repeat and summarize my comment in #114593: Why on earth would a university decide to endow a scholarship in Mr. Floyd's name? What has he done to deserve such an honor?

To elaborate: Based on what information has been released about him, he was a convicted felon, a repeat offender, a druggie. According to his family, he was kind and peaceful, and that may be true as well, at least some of the time. Most of us show different sides of ourselves at different times and in different situations. Whoever he was, and whatever went down that night, he did not deserve to be executed by that police officer. That much is not open to debate. He deserved, and was legally entitled to, his day in court. So, by the way, is the officer. The court of public opinion, or police officer opinion, just does not count. All of these things should have, and would have, been examined in court. The truth would have been brought out, good or bad. Mr. Floyd would have been given the chance to explain his behavior, witnesses could have testified to the good things about him. The officer took that away from him. He will get his day in court, but Mr. Floyd never will, not on this earth.

All of that to say this. Mr. Floyd did not deserve to die the way he did, but neither does he deserve to be honored with a scholarship in his name. What's next? A scholarship in the officer's name? One is just as undeserved as the other.

June 08, 2020 - Msg 114603: Rowena: No, we haven't met, though I have followed your posts by reading this Porch for awhile. I sort of have an understanding on how people feel on life and things here, because of the various writings they post. Very natural and open.
Two total different situations that JM was referring to. JM threw a maybe out there. Maybe the university is seeing its own past on how it has badly treated people and students of color? For that matter, the whole State of Missouri. Slave state from its inception. A lynching state. Floyd's name is a symbol for all. This movement started when he was killed. The appropriate name for it started with him. Past crimes of Floyd have no bearing in this. Quit looking at things like "being worthy of" or "deserving of". Does not apply here.

June 08, 2020 - Msg 114604: Doggone typos. Sorry, Romeena. JPT

June 08, 2020 - Msg 114605: Also, Romeena: are you using the officer that killed Floyd as the comparison as equally undeserving?

June 08, 2020 - Msg 114606: Look JPT, The moderator will not keep a conversation like this posting, plus there are other that come here to escape the tension and anxiety of life as it is. However, we have always been open and honest and have been allowed to share our feelings on politics, events, etc. So I will say this...I can see this headed to an argument with conflicting opinions. Let's just leave it as we have said our peace and and let it lay.

John Masters

June 08, 2020 - Msg 114607: Sure, John. We'll let it lay, but the moderator/barber would not care unless someone on the Porch complains. I only brought all this up because the subject had already been opened. JPT

June 08, 2020 - Msg 114608: Adding miracle whip to potato salad gives it that extra little zip. My cold slaw recipe, add mayo, apple cider vinegar to taste, and a little sugar and yes to the celery seed Boo. We just had store bought cole slaw with our crab cakes tonight and it was passable. Sarah

June 08, 2020 - Msg 114609: Good evening, porch. John Masters,(/b> you are right, don't worry, my friend. You are right, this has the makings of an argument, which is not what the porch is about. Also, I have no intention of entering into an argument with JPT here or anywhere else. End of discussion. --Romeena
