November 20, 2018 - Msg 111070: Did you you that Abe Lincoln made another proclamation? Here it is from wikipedia:
"Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It originated as a harvest festival. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, with a proclamation by George Washington after a request by Congress. Its celebration was intermittent until the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, when Thanksgiving became a federal holiday in 1863, during the American Civil War. Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.
The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621.] This feast lasted three days, and—as accounted by attendee Edward Winslow[]—it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims.[ The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"—days of prayer thanking God for blessings."

I hope your preparations are going well!
Love all you folks,

November 20, 2018 - Msg 111072: Good morning all.
MDC, Thanks for sharing that little tidbit. Very interesting and it sure puts things in perspective. I sure hope that we all can use this day, as a day to reflect upon our many blessings. And where those blessings originate.

Frankie, it looks like you guys are going to get some rain at last. Hopefully that will improve your conditions.

Hey to John Masters. I saw you on an old Jack Benny show yesterday.

Speaking of TAGS actors, I was watching an old Alfred Hitchc@ck show and I saw a very very young Luke Taft. It took me a while to recognize him in fact. But sure enough, it was him. He another one who gets around a lot MDC.

GF, I finally got all my leaves collected up yesterday. And it sounds like just in the nick of time. Supposed to get some rain and snow by Thursday. Did your snow end finally?

Well I guess I will go hit the shower. Stacey and I are heading out to go Christmas shopping. It is our traditional thing we do. Then we will go get some breakfast or lunch, depending on how long we are shopping. I sure do enjoy spending time with her. And Ro, thanks for the nice comment about GF and I loving our Grand kids. I am so very thankful that they live close by, and that we have the close relationship that we do, and that Matt and Stacey encourage that.

Prayers for all for a great and safe day.

Yes Asa 90% rain tomorrow it will be nice to see this air cleaned out. I tried to get all my errands done today so I can stay inside tomorrow. My nephew is coming from Los Angeles for Thanksgiving with us. Will also have his mom, my sister here also. Looking forward to seeing them and spending special time together.

BTW, no leaves even falling here as yet!

ALL--I think most of you know that my wife and I have never had any
"issuances of the third generation" as brisco would say, but we DO
have 20 nieces and nephews. In their early years we often took care of them on weekends so my sibs and spouses could get a break.
Anyway, a few days ago we were introduced to our 20th "grand"
niece/nephew. Actually a new little niece!! Wow, where does the time go??
20/20 !

Frankie, I sure hope you get that rain.
GF--what's the snow forecast?
BTW, looking at the Cavs record, I see just how much James carried that team!

Yes MDC, I will miss my Grainger visits. I was well known there. I will miss my Johnstone Supply visits also. They always had donuts and a pop dispenser. :)Congrats on number 20. Yep, time just moves right along, don't it?

GF, There are a lot of things I buy at Harbor Freight, and a lot of other things I avoid. lol But now that I don't have a toll allowance, I suspect HF will be my go to store more often. But I declare, I have so many tools now. I am like a woman with a shoe compelshion. Only mine are tools. Actually I would like to buy a nice wood planer. I will look used though I think. Come spring I want to get my shop organized and get going on some projects.
I am into season 8 of TAGS now. Last night I watched the episode where Aunt Bee has Jury duty. It was funny how she wore down the rest of the Jurors and yet proved to be correct in the end.

Well best get rolling. I need to go buy a new water filter for my fridge. I guess I will brave a trip to Lowes or Home Depot.

November 21, 2018 - Msg 111080: Good afternoon, porch. Been a busy day, took Tillie back to the mechanic to get an oil and filter change and inspection, so I can complete my registration, which expires in December. She's just humming like a fine swiss watch. I'm so glad I didn't trade that car a few years ago, when I started to do it. I would have been just about finishing up five years of $500 payments, and I don't know where the money would have come from, and I'd still have about a seven year old car, and the warranty would be expired. I'd be right where I am now, except the car would be seven years newer, and I wouldn't have liked it as much. It was a nice car, but so is Tillie and Tillie fits me like a glove, runs beautifully, and still hasn't turned 100k miles. I think eventually Tillie and I will just drive off into the sunset together!

My hearing is still completely out in the right ear. Thank you, G-F, for asking. I can't even hear the dial tone on my landline phone when I put it to that ear. It's just dead silence. The doc says if this course of steroid doesn't help, we will pursue other means to determine the cause. I can't have an MRI because of my pacemaker, but a CT with contrast dye is almost as good. He says it could be a tumor, but probably not because the onset was so abrupt, just from one moment to the next. He also mentioned a little stroke, just affecting the ear. I'm leaning that way. I just feel like it's vascular, because in spite of being unable to hear external sounds, I can "hear" random sounds in my head that could be blood flow. For some reason, I also hear very soft, distant humming noises, ranging in pitch from very high to very low, and just switching back and forth. I don't know what that means, if anything. This I know for sure, it's all annoying and very frustrating. However, I'm so very thankful for the hearing in my left ear. I've worn hearing aids for two years now, and have very good hearing with them, and actually, it wasn't too bad without them. I'm still wearing the right one along with the left, but it does nothing. If I get to feeling too sorry for myself, I just think of my friend at church, who has only one arm. Yet she drives, dresses like a model and always looks perfectly groomed, cooks, and can do anything anyone else can do. I have no complaints.

These steroids are a mixed blessing! I have more energy than I've had in years, but I can't turn my motor off at night and get to sleep. Sure getting a lot of things done around here that needed doing, though!

It's a good thing I've got a little motivation. Diesel is with me while his folks are on vacation, and he does need attention now and then. He's really the most obedient and gentle dog you can imagine, but he loves to play, and needs a little workout now and then. Toye Starr will play with him, but at 11 years old, she wears out before he does, and he's still brimming with energy. She puts up with him as long as she can, but when she squares off and barks in his face, he takes the hint. It's quite a sight, tiny fluffy little Starr, little bark, and big dog droops his ears, tucks his tail, droops his shoulders and backs off. So funny!

My living room floor is just a sea of toys. Starr plays with just three or four, and rarely invades the toy basket, which holds at least fifty toys. Diesel wants each and every one of them out on the floor, and then he just walks among them and makes his choices. He's searching for one with a squeaker, and if he finds it, that squeaker has to go. He inserts one sharp canine tooth, tears a hole, and out comes the squeaker. Then he holds the squeaker in his closed mouth, and I guess he's mashing it with his tongue, because you hear "ee-aw, ee-aw" coming out of this dog with a closed mouth. He is one big, floppy, mop-headed, kind-hearted clown.

Well, guess I'll go start a little laundry. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

I have been watching some of Alfred on METV. And some old Jack Benny shows on youtube. Maybe I am reliving my childhood. Who knows. lol

November 21, 2018 - Msg 111082: No, Asa,/b> I don't think you're reliving your childhood. If it wasn't for the Hallmark channels, and METV and (at times)TVLand, and old movies like TCM, I don't know what I'd watch. Nothing, I guess. The current crop is just disgusting. Yes MDC, that episode has a young Jack Nicholson in it. When I tell casual fans of the show that he was in an episode of TAGS, they are surprised. Then when I tell them he was actually in two episodes they are shocked. Then when I go on to mention others who appeared on the show, such as Howard Hessmen, Rob Reiner, Teri Garr, Artie Johnson Morgan Brittney(to name a few) they think I am funning them.

Guess I will get my rolls in the oven. That's my contribution to the big meal today.

November 22, 2018 - Msg 111092: Hahahaa! Pringles potato chips! I love them! One day I was in my cardiologist's office - a great guy, I've known and worked with him as a nurse for years - and somehow Pringles were mentioned, and I commented that I like them so much. His eyebrows hit his hairline, and he looked at me like I had just committed heresy. He said, "What? Pringles? There shouldn't be a Pringle within five miles of you!" I just said, "Hey, fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, and I gotta have a little junk now and then! Besides with my cholesterol at 185, what are you worried about?" He just laughed and mumbled some comment about having nurses for patients. A talented man, and a good guy. There are advantages to having worked at the same relatively small hospital for 35 years, where everyone knows everyone else, and you definitely get to know who's the best, because you see the results.

Happy, happy Thanksgiving to all my porch peeps. Eat all you want, but don't overdo it. Leave some leftovers, sometimes that's the best part. I love leftovers, especially holiday leftovers! They're the best! My kids are all scattered with their "other" families, I was invited but chose not to go, and am spending the day with a bunch of old widder gals like me, from Sunday School, and we will have a great day! We'll share pictures, swap grandkid brags, trade recipes, and laugh until our ribs are sore. We have much to be thankful for, and we definitely know Whom to thank. Christians have more fun than anybody else I know!

Blessings, porch! --Romeena

November 22, 2018 - Msg 111093: Oh, MDC, to answer your question - yes, I would hear it, but I would hear it as coming from the left. I don't locate sound very well. It's surprising how delicate that process is, and how easily it gets confused. So I quickly learned to just stop in my tracks and use my eyes, not my ears, to locate the source of a sound. I appreciate your concern. I'm learning fast, even though it's just been a little over a week. It's going to be an inconvenience, nothing more. If God chooses to intervene, it might even clear up, but the doc isn't very optimistic. So far, the steroids have done nothing. Such is life. --Romeena

When I was young we used to go out to a restaurant for our Thanksgiving meal and take both my stepdad's mom & my other grandmother with us. There we were all gathered around the table when all of a sudden Granny (stepdad's mom) blurted out " Pringles Potato Chips!" Well, as you can imagine,us kids started giggling & even Mamie,my other grandmother, got tickled. Mama was giving us "that look" that irritated mothers are famous for,so we had to rein in our laughter, and fast! We never found out what was behind Granny's Pringles outburst and still laugh about it when Thanksgiving comes around.

So, Pringles Potato Chips!!

November 23, 2018 - Msg 111102: Happy Belated Thanksgiving. The last couple of days have been pretty busy and I am a little tired. I cooked all day on Wed and was nearly done for the day and looking forward to my bed when Erin called to me from the bathroom. She was throwing up and passed out on the bathroom floor just as I opened the door. She had a case of food poisoning, I think. It was a rough evening and I didn't get much sleep but she was much better by the next morning. I am just hoping it wasn't a bug and that I don't get it. Poor girl was so sick for awhile.

So, we delayed my mom in laws arrival until today and we had a quiet thanksgiving dinner last night with St. Susan and her family, only. Poor Erin got a little chicken broth and a few crackers for thanksgiving dinner. I told her she picked the worst day of the year to get sick.

So, today all of Bruce's relatives arrive. Yippee (sarcasm). Ya'll know how excited I get over the holidays but I swear, this year I just want to hibernate. I need to think on the positive and be very thankful for all my blessing, so will focus on that today.

Better go put some clothes in the washer and finish cleaning up the dishes from last night, vacuum up the pie crumbs, etc. I slept well so I think I can pull this off. lol

Romeena, I hate to be a pest but I was wondering if there is some other way you could send me the Christmas card list in a different format. For the life of me I can't get the one you sent me to open. I'm sorry. I don't mean to be a bother.

We had a wonderful T-Day at Stacey's yesterday. She reminds me so much of my Mother. My Mom loved having everyone over for the Holidays, and so does Stacey. She even looks so much like my Mom did when she was younger. I'm not sure if I ever shared this story, but as my Dad was getting close to passing away, he was slipping in and out of awareness. Stacey had dropped in to see him as he was becoming coherent, and as he looked up and saw her, he must have thought it was my Mon who had passed away almost 30 years earlier. His face lit up and he said "Gladys, you came for me". Not many dry eyes that night I tell you.

MDC, Glad you are feeling well enough to do some decorating this year. How did your testing go? Well I hope.

Possum, I hope your day went alright. I know those Holidays following the loss of a loved one can be difficult. You are in my prayers.

Well think I'll go see whats on the tube. I was watching a Jack Benny episode this morning and I saw the elderly lady that was trying to sell Barney a car following the Hubcaps Lesh debacle. At least I think it was her.

November 24, 2018 - Msg 111109: Good evening, porch. Asa,
My prayers and love are sent for all of our members who have had illness, lost loved ones, and had other difficulties throughout this year that we're about to close. What a blessing this porch is, and I want you all to know that I think of you so often, and pray for your welfare. You have all helped me more than you'll ever know, over the years, and I'm grateful. We have had a lot of fun, and no doubt will continue to do so, as we share and care, and look after each other in spite of the distance. I'm so grateful to Floyd for keeping this site open for us. It's a ministry, my friend, and we appreciate it.

Well, I think I'll toddle off to bed. Diesel has gone and curled up on his big old pillow beside my bed, Toye Starr stood nearby and looked pitiful until I lifted her up there - she can't get on the bed by herself, she's too little, but I put her up there, she curls up in "my" spot and waits for me. When I approach, she scurries to move over and make room for me. Diesel starts out on his pillow, but as soon as Toye Starr and I get settled, that 35 lb dog hops up there as lightly as a feather, steps softly around and finds a good spot, and soon is quietly snoring. Let me tell you, those two warm and cuddly bodies, and that soft sound, will soon lull you to sleep, believe me! God is good. --Romeena

November 24, 2018 - Msg 111111: Hmmm. Something happened to the first part of #111109 up there. It originally read: Asa, there is no way on this green earth that you could be a bother, and of course I'll send that list in another format. I'll just copy and paste it into an email, and you can do with it as you wish. In fact, I'll probably just send it out that way to everyone. Sometimes others have problems opening attachments too, so that will solve that.

I wonder what happened to the original text?? --Romeena

November 24, 2018 - Msg 111112: Thanks, MDC...I knew your comment was a positive one, just sounded so funny in light of the Mary Grace episode! Oh, and excellent advice about the firestone albums! I will squeeze in time for that today. I am very sorry that you lost your friend, Joan, but happy that you can rejoice in her new life with Jesus. I sure love him, don't you! Where would we be without the hope of eternal life?

Well, all went well after all! I haven't gotten sick, Erin feels fine and we had a really nice family gathering yesterday. The weather was good and no fights broke out and we had more food than anyone needs. The idea of everyone bringing leftovers was a good one, but we ended up having more than we needed. The good news is that I still have leftovers to feed mom in law.

Mom in law is stubborn as ever and I am quite sure she will fall at some point but hope no real injury. She insists on leaning over as far as she can from the wheelchair to try to pick up the cat and dog and she has fallen that way on numerous occasions. I think she is attempting an injury so she wont have to go back, and I'm not kidding. Her mind works that way.

I stuck pretty well to my vegan diet this week but ate a piece of pie containing dairy and a bite or two of a couple of other things. I woke up early this morning feeling sick but it is getting better. Im just not used to the rich food. I ate my own vegan dressing and sweet potatoes and that was ok but the other stuff I just have to stay away from.

Yes, Asa, it is a little like the Griswold's around here and we have our own version of Cousin Eddy (Bruce's brother), who doesn't have an RV, but a big pick-up truck. He is a good soul and a good sport like Cousin Eddy. This year he has grown a beard and looks a bit like a bad Santa.

Possum, I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving. I am sure it was bittersweet. I hope you feel as I do through the years..it feels like my parents have never really left me and I can be happy that they are happy now.

You are very welcome, Romeena. Thank you for what you expressed. I have been so blessed by all of you over the years and am so thankful.

Well, better go check on mom in law. She had her coffee and toast and is about half dressed at this point...wish me luck!

November 25, 2018 - Msg 111115: Good morning, porch. Well, I still have Diesel. His family was due to arrive late last evening, but David called me with a change of plans. They have a pastor friend who preaches in a little town about two hours the other side of Dallas. Since they would be passing through that little city, they decided to stop off there and stay in a motel, then attend his services this morning, have lunch with the family, and then come on to Irving this afternoon. I'm delighted they could do that, they will enjoy it, the friend will appreciate it, and Diesel is just fine right here. He's getting a little mopey, as his timer tells him it's time for them to be home (we've done this Thanksgiving thing before) but he'll manage. However, when they walk in the door this afternoon, there will be a lot of excited, galumphy rejoicing by one fluffy, mopheaded do! He's such a good boy.

Speaking of fluffy, there is a big, very fat, very fluffy, very busy squirrel out back, having a Thanksgiving feast in a pile of old cereal I put on the feeding stones. He's practically rolling in it! It was rice chex and wheat chex, and apparently the rice is the favorite, because it's all gone and the wheat remains, but he's eating that now. It won't last long. This squirrel lives in the box on the tree just above the stones, and probably has had it all to himself. The others who live in the other trees will find it this morning, they won't miss the rice, and will polish off the wheat chex in good order. I love squirrels!

Asa, I don't know if it would help, but try forwarding that email with the attachment back to me and let me see how it arrives on your end. Maybe I can figure out what's causing it not to open?? You should just be able to click on it. What kind of computer do you use? If it's a Mac, I know nothing about them. PC's, I'm familiar with.

Well, better get busy around here. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

November 25, 2018 - Msg 111117: Ro, I just sent it back to you. I use a PC also, no Mac.

Those puppies are so funny with their internal clocks, aren't they? Debbie would say that around 3:30 every afternoon Barney would start getting antsy, looking at the door for my usual arrival home from work at 4:00. She said if I was late, he would start whimpering and groaning. They are amazing.

I just stayed for our Sacrament meeting today. I pulled something in my upper back somehow, and sitting in anything other than my Wheeler just aint working right now.

Our snow storm yesterday was pretty weak. We got maybe 2 inches and it was mostly melted off before dark. This morning the sun is bright although not all that warm. Ro, I wish I could have gotten you a video of what I saw this morning. As I was walking past the front door, I saw something moving in the front yard. I went to the window and was stunned to see a gazillion black birds, on my lawn, on the street, in my neighbors front yard. I opened the door to get a better look, but that was enough to spook them. This mass flutter as they flew off in a wave. Pretty amazing to see.

November 25, 2018 - Msg 111118: Asa,I have seen those congregations of birds. Not sure what they are, I don't think they're starlings because they don't have the little speckles on their belly and back. They aren't grackles, too small and tail too short, and they don't make that grating, rusty-saw call that a grackle makes. Whatever they are, after they have descended on a yard, don't count on any grass seed coming up! And yes, the least little thing will spook them, and they just rise in a big black cloud and disappear. Amazing.

OK, now that you're home, I have decided it's time for you to get a puppy. Just think of the hours of fun you can have with it now! You'll have time to train it, teach it tricks, and just have a wonderful time with it. Some people just have to have a dog, and I think you and I both are those people.

My back yard looks so terrible right now. I've left a lot of the blooming flowers and let them go to seed, much to the delight of the resident birds. Marigolds, a few zinnias, ecchinacea, and a few others - just brown stalks with seed heads on top. This is such a dreary time of year, garden-wise, but the birds disagree.

Well, back to my Christmas tree. The boys left it set up for me to be able to decorate it easy (out in the middle of the room) and it's less than half done, after a week! I've been busy with other things. They'll be here in about three hours, and I need to get the back part, that goes into the corner, finished, and come forward on the sides a bit, so they can put it in its place and I can finish the front tomorrow. The top is wedged between sofa cushions and all decorated, all they have to do is put it in place. I can't do it. The tree is over 8 feet tall, and I have better sense than to climb on a stepstool with a top-heavy treetop in my hands and try to find that little bitty hole in the top of the trunk to slide it into. Nope, my mama didn't raise any dummies, and besides, my balance is off these days, what with the ear thing and all. I'll let my 6'5" son do that, he doesn't need a stepstool. At 5'3" now, a lot of options are no longer available to me. Such is life.

Blessings! --Romeena

November 25, 2018 - Msg 111120: MDC-Sorry to hear about your friend. It is so hard to see someone you care so much about in pain. She is safe in God`s hands.

I started digging out some of my Christmas decorations today. Went out in the shed and brought out my little christmas tree. Put a new string of lights on it and it is as pretty as ever.

It was beautiful out today. The sun was out and shinning so nice. Loved every minute of it.

November 26, 2018 - Msg 111121: Regarding Joan, thanks for all your condolences. I now know why Jesus put so much emphasis on caring for widows. She was always so grateful to have someone with whom to visit; always a glint in her eye when we'd come by with groceries and good conversation. I indeed know that she is happy and enjoying heaven.

Has any here watched the new show "God Friended Me."? I am always skeptical these days of shows involving some Christianity, but to my surprise, this one does it pretty well! Very refreshing to see.

ASA--I heard on the news recently that your prez has said that 2 meetings on Sunday are enough. ha Maybe he watched the 'dry as dust' episode. :)

RO--I completely forgot about that hose! Glad it is still working tho. Glad too that deisel will soon be reunited with his fam.
BOO--looks (from FB) like you had a really nice Thanksgiving. Even MIL did pretty well.
Love that porch you have.

Man, it seems like Christmas season just sneaked up on me this year!
Oh well, that's OK, I love it. :)

November 26, 2018 - Msg 111122: Yes MDC...Those small “Acts of Kindness” are HUGE to those who are in need. It shows how little it takes to make a Big impact on somebody’s day. I found that early in my career working with my elderly residents. Just knowing someone cares makes that persons day and week, for some we are the only family they have!...Bless You for your ministry....

November 26, 2018 - Msg 111123: Good morning, porch. Yes, Diesel's family came home yesterday afternoon, and he was one happy puppy. I am so blessed. Before they left last week, as I told you, they had set up my Christmas tree in the middle of the room, got my ornaments out, (six large plastic bins full) and got me in a position to just work on the tree at little intervals, since standing for hours is pretty much no longer my favorite thing. Last night, the boys moved it back into its corner (it stands on a six-inch tall platform with large, maneuverable caster wheels.) The back and sides had been decorated, they set the top in place and connected it, and now I have the whole empty front to play with and put all my favorite ornaments in place. They hung my large and heavy wreath above the fireplace, and placed my treasured 84-yr old antique snowman in the center of it. Just as Landry was about to step down off the ladder, the hook holding the wreath pulled away from the beam it was anchored in, and quick-handed first-baseman Landry caught both wreath and snowman as it fell, and nothing was damaged. David had gone after burgers, and when he arrived he set a new hook, Landry rehung the wreath and all is well. Those boys have memorized the routine, and know where everything is kept, so I just kept hanging ornaments while they brought out two more wreaths, hung them, adjusted their ornaments, and tended to many little details of decor. The house is taking shape, and it has all been so easy and at such leisure. Good son and DIL, and good grandsons. As I said, I am blessed.

G-F, I agree completely. Sometimes it can be the smallest thing that means so much. I recall one Sunday morning just a few weeks after my first cancer surgery, in 1979, and I was taking chemo, which often caused me to have chills unexpectedly. I was sitting next to Dale, each of us with a child or children on our other side, and we were packed in pretty well. Dale was a very big guy, and for him to remove his jacket for me would have required him to almost stand up and cause some disturbance. Ours is a praying church, and needs are published, so the membership was aware of my situation. A tiny elderly lady, whom I knew only in passing, observed my shaking, understood, and suddenly I felt gentle hands placing her already-warm sweater around my shoulders. She settled it in place, patted and squeezed my shoulder, and whispered "God be with you." I will never forget that little random act of kindness.

Your comment above reminded me of one that often makes the rounds in, and you have probably heard it. "Never miss an opportunity to do the right thing, because your life may be the only 'Jesus' that some people will ever see."

Blessings, friends! --Romeena
