November 16, 2017 - Msg 108543: Happy Thursday porch, hope everyone is having a great day.

I haven't been by to rock lately but have been checking in to see how everyone is doing. been busy with first one thing and then the other. I understand how ole Bert felt.

been colder here lately and getting dark by the time I leave work. the leaves sure are pretty colors but falling fast. Mr. Maude will have his work cut out for himself when he starts getting them up.

Patrick, Beth and Daysie are all doing well. Beth is still looking for a job where she can actually use her college degree but remains at Food Lion. Patrick and Daysie are settling in to their house and experiencing the joys and woes of owning rather than renting.

Thanksgiving dinner will be at our house with me doing the cooking. Daysie has to work at 2pm and
Beth may have to work part of the day. won't have a lot of people so it should be manageable.

MDC: hope your back gets better

Hey to everyone around the porch .

Supper menu will be: fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuits, green beans, SLAW.
peach cobbler with ice cream for dessert. tea or lemonade to drink.

Better get back to work.

November 16, 2017 - Msg 108545: Hi everyone. I'm still without a computer and WiFi is spotty at best but checking in. I hope you are all well and blessed. I think of all of you daily.

I can't remember when I have been busier. Seems like since the hurricane life has just ramped up as far as activity. I am working more trying to help pay for a big tractor repair and the upcoming holidays. I still have a job but things are looking rather glum at the facility and census is low. We are working one nurse per shift on most days but I don't mind it. I am planning on taking one of my artificial trees up there to decorate the nurses station and raise spirits a bit.

We are hosting the family for thanksgiving and will have a crowd as usual. Expecting some family from out of town, in town, and even good friends. I just love it but had lots of work to do. St Susan and I went to town and got our thanksgiving shopping done today, so that helps.

Erin is doing really well and is on the basketball team and loving it. Sean has his challenges but keeps going. Bruce is working alot.

Well, hope all of you have a terrific rest of the week.

Love,
Boo

November 17, 2017 - Msg 108548: Good morning, porch! John Masters, it's good to hear from you. Funny stuff in that post, very creative. Boo, glad to hear from you, too. I've been wondering how you were getting along. Looks like it's just going to take a while to recover from the storm. My cousin in Houston tells me that they're still trying to get past it, and some folks are still without homes. He was fortunate, he's located where he didn't get any water damage.

G-F, by Sunday I'll be able to get MeTV too! I've been considering getting one of those OTA antennas so I could get those channels, and guess what. Last night my primary dishbox failed, and at the moment, I have no TV at all. I called and set up an appointment for Sunday afternoon to get that box replaced with a new upgrade (no charge). Then my son called this morning, and I told him, and he said - Mom, call them back and tell them to bring an OTA antenna as well. That reminded me of an email I had gotten from them, I went back and found it on my computer, and I will be getting the OTA antenna along with my new Dish box, all at no charge and no monthly service charge, and it will remove the $10 a month charge that I've been paying to have the local network channels. Also, the OTA will be interfaced with my new remote control, and will function with my surround-sound system and anything else that the Dish box works with. It seems that the local networks charge the cable and satellite providers a huge amount of money for the privilege of carrying their channels! They keep going up on it, to the point that Dish finally had to start charging the customers that $10 to help offset what they were paying the networks. Finally, they decided it would be cheaper to provide everyone with an OTA antenna for free, and tell the networks to go up an alley and holler fish! I love it. I'm going to have better service for $10 less a month! Can't beat a deal like that.

I have some very good news on the "short of breath" thing. I saw the doctor who manages my pacemaker on Tuesday morning, and we went over all the factors that could be involved. We came up with reducing my dosage of Atenolol. That drug slows the heart rate, which for me helps to keep me from going into A-fib. My pacer readings show that I have A-fib about 2% of the time, and the episodes are very brief, usually about five minutes. We cut the dose in half, hoping it will be enough to continue to control the A-fib, but it lets my heart rate move up from about 76 to an average of 88-92. It's faster because my heart is trying to compensate for the decreased lung capacity. So here's the result. On the usual dose, my resting heart rate was around 74-76, and my O2 sat would be 89-91%. Therefore, I was tired all the time, just no energy to do anything. After just three nights on the reduced dose, this morning, my resting heart rate is 92, my O2 sat is 95-96%, and I'm actually looking forward to working in the yard. I'll see the doc again in three months, and he'll let the pacer readout tell him whether I've had an increase in A-fib episodes, but so far, I haven't felt any at all. Of course, I don't always feel them, so the readout will be the key. I'm very, very optimistic, however. God is good!

Well, my friend Joe is coming in a little while and we'll get some work done in the yard. I've got bulbs to plant and there are several volunteer trees that have gotten beyond the "pull up" stage and will have to be dug out. With pecan trees, that time begins when they're about a foot tall, and some of these are over three feet! When a squirrel's buried pecan sprouts, the little tree grows upward toward the surface, and one single root begins heading straight down, and is usually longer than the little tree. Plus, the pecan is still firmly attached, and you're trying to pull it up through the ground as well. Annoying things.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

November 17, 2017 - Msg 108549: Joe has been here and gone, worked for about three hours, and I worked right alongside! I pulled a big pile of weeds, planted six amaryllis, and hauled some trash to the street. Got a lot of dirt under my fingernails, and boy, did it ever feel good! I did have to stop and rest for a minute about four times, but I was just tired, not really short of breath. I've been doing practically nothing for so long that I think I've gotten de-conditioned. It will take a while to build my strength back up. What I did today, I absolutely could not have done last week. I think we're definitely on the right track. God is good. --Romeena

November 19, 2017 - Msg 108559: Hi folks,

Thanks ASA. Appreciate the sentiment. Life has been rough for me and the wife. Kinda upside down. We lost one of our dogs of ten years to kidney disease. She was daignosed and was gone three weeks later. Wife and I did home IV treatments to save her but she QUICKLY developed neurological problems, like walking sideways and falling on her face. We put her down feeling like we had been robbed. We have had TONS of sentiment thru Facebook that our vet instructed us to give her way more fluid than she needed and it went to her brain. She was cremated and is in a beautiful pine box wit her name burned onto the top of the box. We are terribly heartbroken and the space she leaves is enormous.
Sorry, folks. Didnt mean to vent, it just kinda poured out.
My best to each and every one of you!

John Masters

November 19, 2017 - Msg 108560: Oh my goodness, John Masters. I'm so glad you came here to "vent", because we understand. We've all done it. You weren't here when I lost my precious Sugarplum, or when Asa lost his Sammy. My son's Bentley left us much too soon, and he just belonged to our whole family. Others have lost beloved pets as well, and we understand the pain, believe me. Sugarplum has been gone for ten years, and I still can't look at certain pictures of her without the tears coming. Never, ever feel you should apologize for sharing your feelings, especially your grief. That's what a family is for, and we are your porch family.

You mentioned the space she left, and how it is so big. I know what you mean. Sugarplum left a big hole in my life, because I knew I couldn't replace her. I did get Toye Starr, but she didn't replace Sugarplum. She just came in and made her own place, and settled right down next to that empty spot. The warmth and light she brought to me has helped to make that empty spot more tolerable. I know Sugarplum would approve. She always wanted me to be happy, and would be thrilled that I have another beloved companion.

Blessings! --Romeena

November 20, 2017 - Msg 108564: MDC, I'm hoping you'll make some overtures toward that friendly little stray, and maybe you already have. You never know how a kitty becomes homeless. Maybe her person died and there was no one to take her. Maybe her family moved away and just left her. Yes, people do that. How, I'll never understand, but they do. A friendly little cat suddenly appeared at my daughter's home, hung around the porch a lot, and finally had three kittens under the porch steps. They found homes for the kittens, and kept the little mama cat, whom they named Kitty Mama. Had her spayed, bathed her (she allowed it) and brought her in the house. She's an absolute delight. She's a tiny thing, very prim and proper, and so affectionate. She also gets along very well with all the dogs, and when our family is all together, there can be at least five dogs. You just might have a little gift, right there in your back yard. --Romeena

November 21, 2017 - Msg 108568: Sure thing, SPOT. If you'll go back to the last archive, to message 108513, you'll find it. However, I'll add a bit to it, based on some experimenting I did this morning. It's easy to get too much brown sugar on the bacon, if you press the bacon into the sugar the way I described in that first post. If you get too much, you'll have a hard crust of sugar, and it's just a bit much. This morning, I just very lightly pressed some of the strips in the sugar, then pressed them into the flour. They were still very good, and didn't have that hard shell of sugar. Then I mixed some sugar into the flour, and just pressed the bacon firmly into that combination, and that worked well also. Once you get the idea, you'll figure out what suits you best. This I can guarantee - good bacon with a light brown sugar and flour crust will leave you looking forward to breakfast. I had mine with a toasted English muffin with cream cheese on it, and a handful of little cherry tomatoes. Good!

Have a good night, everyone. Say your prayers! --Romeena

Romeena, I declare, I think I gained 2 pounds just reading about your bacon cooking. I have got to give that a whirl. I have a 4 day weekend coming up.

John Masters, I do feel your pain at the loss of your friend. As Ro mentioned, we lost our Doxie Sammy 14 years ago. And just a couple of months ago we lost Barney. Very hard to lose a cherished friend and companion for sure. Prayers my friend.

GF, Glad you got her done. We are supposed to have nice warm temps here all week. So I figure I will get mine all finished up over the holiday. I fired up the snow blower last Saturday. It didn't want to start at first. But it finally fired up. This stinking gas they sell anymore is a joke. I treat it with stabilizer, but it still seems to have issues. Hondas in particular seem to not like it to much. I am thinking next year I will buy some ethanol free gas for everything.

Well off to a staff meeting to the big city today. They are feeding us lunch even.

Prayers for all.

Asa

November 21, 2017 - Msg 108570: Asa, that is exactly the reason I went with my “Snow Joe” electric blower. After much research I decided to go that route, instead of the gas one. November 21, 2017 - Msg 108571: ** “Fake bacon” alone that is...lol

November 21, 2017 - Msg 108572: Good morning, porch. I see I'm not alone in my opinion of fake bacon. The way I see it, turkey is turkey and bacon is bacon, and never the twain shall meet. It's kinda like sugar is sugar, and chemicals are chemicals. All those artificial sweeteners just taste awful, and they give me headaches. I don't touch them anymore. Stevia is a plant derivative, not so much chemical like the other stuff, and it tastes a wee bit better, but it still has that whangy, metallic kick at the end, and I won't touch it. Americans have become so brain-washed by some doctors, and especially by the Madison Avenue crowd who are always telling us how we should look, feel, eat, smell and think that we fall for anything. So, we find ourselves eating fat-free sour cream (an oxymoron if ever I heard one) - did you ever read the ingredients on a carton of that stuff? And that's supposed to be better for us? We eat "bacon" made from turkey meat and infused with a bunch of chemicals to make it taste like bacon, but it doesn't. Many doctors no longer recommend the fake sugars, and there have been credible studies done that have proven that the fake stuff doesn't really help with weight loss, and in many cases, people gain weight when using it.

I know a lady at my church who weighs over 300 pounds, and at our monthly dinners, you can see her packing the food in like a field hand. She will sit next to a skinny person and if they don't seem interested in their dessert, she'll ask them if they're going to eat it. If they say no, she'll ask them if she can have it, and proceed to eat that second dessert, while putting Splenda in her tea! She's a sweet, dear soul, but for her, it's all about the food, and her concession to weight control is a little packet of Splenda. Go figure. I've learned to read labels, and on all the low-fat, low-sugar stuff, you will find things you can't even pronounce, let alone know what it is. Some of it I DO know what it is, and I don't want to ask my body to deal with it. Try it sometime, it'll scare you to death!

Well, enough of that little rant. Got places to go, and things to do, so better get busy. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

We really had a wonderful time without family drama, since mother in law was in the nursing home up near her eldest son. Hate to sound that way, but there it is. We will go up for a visit and see her the week after christmas. Anyway, I stuck to my vegan diet except for one piece of my favorite banana, blueberry, cream cheese pie. I made the usual foods for the family, though, and they all enjoyed it.

I am doing well and feeling 10 years younger with plenty of energy these days. I finally got my first set of labs done and I have apparently reversed my diabetes. I used to have an A1C of 6.6 on Metformin, and now it is 5.6, which is perfectly normal. My fasting blood sugar is now 90. I also corrected my anemia on a meat-free diet. I now have a great hemoglobin and hematocrit. So much for the idea that someone has to eat meat to get their iron. I take a daily dose of greens in combination with a food containing vit C and it did the trick. I also have normal B12 levels and normal blood calcium levels, even without consuming dairy. I still have some bad cholesterol levels but improving. My liver enzymes are still elevated, but that should improve in time, too. So, I am forging on and very thankful to the Lord for showing me the way to take my health back. Oh, and I am down 45 pounds.

Enough of that..we have been really slow at work so I have been decorating the heck outta this place. It looks like Christmas had diarrhea in here. lol...sorry, but sums it up. They wanted us to make the place more kid-friendly, and buddy, I did. :) Lights and tinsel everywhere!

Will start on my christmas decorating at home tomorrow. I am hosting a few parties this year since I have had so much energy, I am in the mood to party...well, with Baptists, so not really partying...more like "fellowshipping". haha

I better get finished up here before shift change.

OK..let me see..

November 25, 2017 - Msg 108591: HELLO ALL! I too stayed away from the stores, but my three
old college buddies and I and our wives did a nice walk around parts of Ariz St. Univ. here in Tempe, az. We all graduated from there in 1971, and talked of the changes, new buildings, etc, as we
strolled the grounds. (no classes today, of course, so it was pretty quiet there) Then we walked to a small restaurant in nearby downtown Tempe, and that was followed by an electric light parade.

November 25, 2017 - Msg 108593: Morning all.

Boo, how wonderful to hear from you! You go girl! It sounds like your lifestyle change is doing wonders for you. I am glad you are feeling so well. You didn't make one of those tofu turkeys like Marie on Everybody Loves Raymond, did you? I'll be dogged if I can think of where your quote is from. I hope your family is well.

Sounds like a nice afternoon MDC. My alma-mater is hosting it's first ever play-off game today Weber State University. We have never been that good in football, so it is kind of neat to be playing post season. They have always excelled in basketball though. I wanted to go but I knew sitting on those bleachers with no back support wasn't a good idea. Is yours a Christmas quote?

Well for whatever reason I just "fell awake" at about three o'clock this morning. Decided just to go ahead and get up and do something instead of just laying there and get frustrated. Maybe I'll do some laundry. That's always fun.

November 25, 2017 - Msg 108600: Wow, living here in Canada, I did not realize your thanksgiving was two days ago. We celebrate it on the second Monday in October.

Billy Ray, I love your jokes. Please keep them coming.

Boo, congratulations on your improving blood profile and weight loss. I guess it is time for you to start shopping for some smaller size clothing.

I know that yesterday was black friday for shoppers in th USA. But Canada is carrying that a little further. Although yesterday was black friday for Canadian shoppers as well, stores here celebrate the day before with red thursday sales.

Possum, speaking of the Three Stooges, I am an avid fan and somewhat of an expert. I even got to meet them in person way back in 1961 and received personalized autographed photographs of all three.

Rimshot...pa ding.

G-F, back in 1961, the Stooges were touring the country promoting one of their feature length movies. They appeared at a local carnival near our home and performed some of their routines in a large outdoor tent. After they finished, my family and I met up with them outside the tent as they took a break. They were gracious enough to chat with us for a little while. They had studio publicity photos of scenes from their movie. Each photo had their stamped signatures. But we asked them to please sign each photo and personalize them by addressing us by our names. My dad took polaroid photographs of them doing the signings. I still have those personalized signed photos and polaroids.
