Indeed Possum, so very senseless. I just cannot fathom what leads people to such acts of violence. We have been to Vegas numerous times over the years, usually stopping in to one of our trips to Southern Cal. Been to Mandalay Bay a number of times. Just so very hard to think someone could do something like this. Prayers for all the people affected by this.

Amen ASA and Possum. With all that has happened lately I think of Jesus' words, "As it was in the days of Noah..." Lord, please be with us.
Prayers for all those many innocent people.
I saw the new cardiologist again today, and indeed the CT scan will be next, with contrast.
She said it will on take a few minutes.
The blessings of Jesus be on all,

Good morning, porch. I'm home, new pacemaker in place, feeling fine. I was scheduled for 11 a.m., as the third case, and finally made it into surgery at 3 p.m. My doc was very apologetic, but it was unavoidable. His first case was an ablation for persistent A-fib, and once they fixed the problem, another one arose, with another ablation in a different area becoming necessary. Then he had two cases arrive from the ER, both needing pacers immediately. No problem for me, Eloise and I just watched TV in my room until they came for me. Mine went quickly, I recovered easily, and was home by 7:45 p.m. David had finished work, and made it to the hospital just before I went to the OR, and he brought me home. I watched a little TV, ate a little (not much) and fell asleep in my chair. Slept like a baby until 2 a.m., when Toye Starr decided we needed to go to bed and woke me up. Bed felt good, and I slept until 8:30. This morning, other than a tender and sore incision site just below my left shoulder, I feel great! No pain med needed, not even an Advil. Piece of cake!
MDC, I wish your dear wife's experience would be as simple and easy as this was for me, but that's not likely. Shoulder surgery is big-time stuff, and she's going to have some tough days, but it will be worth it. Once it heals, she should feel great again, and not have to contend with the nagging pain and limited function she's got now. Prayers for her, indeed!
By the way, the literature they gave me regarding my new pacer suggests that I can now have an MRI if I need one, but I think I'll discuss that with my doctor before I would consent to it, especially since my old leads weren't replaced. They're well-embedded, working fine, it was best to leave them in place. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Well, guess I'll go scratch up a little lunch, and maybe put something on to cook for dinner. I have a crock pot, but it's a really big one, and doesn't work well for cooking small amounts. The liquid has too much room to spread out, and gets too shallow, and well, it just doesn't work. So, I ordered a little 2.5 qt pot from Amazon, and it arrived yesterday. I've got a little bitty roast in there, and some taters and onions (no carrots, darn it!) and I think I'll just try the little pot out. Blessings, porch! --Romeena

Yayy Romeena. Glad you are back in service. So they didn't put bigger wires in? :) Ain't it amazing what modern medicine can do? I know, you're going to tell me to let them do some modern magic on my back. And it may happen. I am not scared of the surgery, but I know more than just a few folks who have come out of the surgery worse than when they went in. That is my concern. Well that and getting an MRI. With my claustrophobia they would have to put me to sleep I do believe.
Well I hope all is well for everyone.

Asa, there are some open MRI machines these days. I know back 1999, my mom was in a near panic when she had to through an MRI. I suspect the claustrophobia would be an issue for me, too. But larger metro areas generally have the open MRI's available. Might be worth checking out.

ASA, My doc said if they decide to try another MRI with me, they would do a couple injections of ativan, and a breathing tube so they could do the "holding of breath" (needed to see the heart better) using the tube. As long as I'm 'under', i told her
that that would probably work.

October 04, 2017 - Msg 108302:
Good very late evening, porch. I'm back to my old late-night hours, even though I'm not writing anything at present. Honestly, late at night is the best time to write. I discovered that years ago. No phones, no doorbells, nothing worth watching on TV, nobody expecting me to be anywhere or do anything, Toye Starr is sleeping, the world is quiet as far as I'm concerned and I can just sit here and let my mind and my fingers wander at will. Sometimes I'm surprised at what appears on the screen!
Billy Ray, you're exactly right about the open MRI machines. I've had a couple of those about fourteen years ago, before I got my pacer. They were neat then, and I'm quite sure they've improved since then. Asa, the machine is like a big doughnut, and if they're imaging your back, your head and legs would likely be in the open, not within the machine. I didn't find them to be a problem at all, but then I didn't have any real trouble with the old tunnels. I didn't like it, but I could control it. As long as I know I could move if I had to, I'm okay. It's being pinned down and unable to move that I can't stand, and I know precisely what caused it. Three things:
When I was six, I had to have my tonsils and adenoids removed. In those days, ether was the anesthetic, delivered by a cone mask. I panicked when they put the mask on, because I could smell the ether, and started fighting. Four nurses placed a folded sheet over me, and then with two on each side, they leaned on their elbows on that sheet, pinning me to the table, while another nurse held my head and the anesthesiologist put the mask over my face. I was screaming bloody murder - "Daddy, help! I can't breathe!" My parents were in a waiting room down the hall, and my dad could hear me. My mom said she was holding him back, he was going to go get me! I can remember that event as clearly as if it was yesterday, and I know that's what started my hatred of being held down. Then once when I was about ten, two of my mean boy cousins rolled me up in a piece of carpet, with my head below the end of the roll, and propped it between a tree and a big box. I was stifling hot, and felt like I couldn't breathe, but obviously I could because I was squalling like a panther and my aunt heard me from inside the house. She got me out, and then laid into her sons with a very sturdy switch and fairly wore them out! She'd probably be arrested for that these days, but back then, parents were allowed to discipline kids and make the punishment fit the crime. One thing for sure, they never did that again! Then when I was a teenager, I got a new cashmere sweater, was so proud of it. One night I was trying to take it off and somehow got tangled in it and couldn't get it over my head. The old smothery feeling came back, and I panicked and started just fighting the sweater. It had some tiny buttons at the back of the neck that I had forgotten about, they got tangled in my hair, and I actually ripped the whole shoulder seam out of the sweater, but I got it off. Pulled out a big chunk of my hair too, but I did get the thing off. So, when I get in a tight place now, like a crowded elevator, I talk myself down by recalling those events and telling myself that's why I'm feeling panicky and it's not the same situation, etc. It works, as long as I can move, or in the case of the MRI, know that I could move but choose not to. Weird, the way our minds work.
Well, Toye Starr is poking me on the ankle, her universal signal to me to get up and get moving. Have a good night, everyone! --Romeena

Morning Dears!
Wow Romeena, Just reading those stories had me breathing hard. Especially the ether one. When I was in 4th grade I broke both wrists and a bone in my forearm when I fell off of some playground equipment at school. And they used ether at the hospital to knock me out before resetting the bones. That stuff is nasty. Truly I think it did some brain damage to me. At least that's what I am blaming it on. Even the smell of it all these years later makes me sick to my stomach.
Thanks for the idea Billy Ray concerning the open tube. I could probably handle that.
MDC, I was surprised to read that about Monte Hall. I just assumed he was already gone. I used to love Let's make a Deal. Too bad your Mom didn't get on. I remember when I was a young-un, one of our local tv stations has what they called a "Beefsteaks Sweepstakes". If you sent them a card with your name and phone number on it, they would put it in a hopper, and then once a day I think they would do a random drawing. If they drew your card, they would call you on live tv and ask you a question. If you got it right, you won a dozen steaks. Well one day they drew my Moms card and called us. She got the question correct and we won a dozen steaks. Boy oh boy, we were quite famous there in our little Mayberry like town for a while. :) But it was from that that I learned how fame and fortune is such a fleeting thing. Wasn't long at all before them steaks were gone, and folks forgot about all about us. (big sigh) lol
Prayers for all for a great day.

I'm feeling better today than I did yesterday, but still not 100%. I don't remember the original pacer implant being like this - you reckon it's got anything to do with the fact that I'm about ten years older? Naahh, couldn't be that! I think it might be because they went through the old incision to access the site, and probably had to deal with some scar tissue. Anyway, the thing is sore, but getting better.
Well, time for a little lunch, I guess. Blessings friends. --Romeena

Asa, I have noticed her in many episodes too!...Probably like Mr. Schwamp we may never know who she is, but I sent the question to Floyd to research....He did a podcast once on Mr. Schwamp, but don’t recall her. One townsperson was Danny Thomas’s brother I know....I recall Andy’s father being on one too!...

October 08, 2017 - Msg 108318:
Wow GF. I knew about Danny Thomas' brother, but I never heard about Andys Dad. I'd like to know what episode that was.
There is another female extra that is in a bunch of episodes. On another board I frequent she has been named "nice dress Nellie" because that is what Andy tells her when she is being released from jail. It was in the episode where Barney locks up the entire town when Andy is gone for a spell. You know who I am talking about GF? Now I swear I saw her on an old My Three Sons episode a few years ago, and if she is the same actress, she had a very heavy accent of some type. I never did figure out if the accent was for real or not, or even for sure it was the same actress, but I think she was.
Funny but I always figured if someone came up with the real identity of Mr. Schwamp, it might be a bit of a let down, kind of like when Howard caught old Sam. We fans have been speculating so long on who he is, I ain't sure I want the mystery solved. lol I have my theory anyway. I think he was Jerry Mathers father. Go google a recent picture of the Beaver and see the resemblance. lol

G-F, thanks for posting that link to view photos from the 2017 Mayberry Days. As for the parade photos, I noticed a man in a military uniform that resembles Sergeant Vince Carter from the Gomer Pyle USMC show. But his uniform was a little mixed up. He wore a Marine Corps drill instructor hat and Marine Corps marskmanship badges, but the rest of his uniform was Army.
Also, since you have attended many Mayberry Days, do you know if Ron Howard ever made an appearance like his brother Clint has?

Asa, a little 15 minutes of fame story myself. The Cincinnati area had a great puppet show on back in the day, Larry Smith and Puppets. They had a Word of the Day, revealed on the show, and they'd call someone to see if they knew it. Sure enough, one day the call came in from Larry Smith. My younger sister answered, she was maybe 5, and when he asked if she could tell him the Word of the Day, she responded "Why?" I don't mean to imply she wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, or anything, she was just young. Cough, cough. Amazingly enough, the Word of the Day was "White" and her "Why" was close enough that he counted it right. The next day, Mom and us 4 kids all got to go down to the set of the show to pick up some prizes. Seeing the studio was quite a letdown, as it was just a couple of homemade booths, maybe 6-8 feet long each, in a sort of dreary warehouse setting. It shore didn't look like much, but anyway. We all got on camera for a minute or two as he talked to my sister. The next day at school, everyone told me that they couldn't see me as my brother was standing right in front of me.
I never knew if it was true, or just a little family legend, but Mom used to tell people that on that day, she'd been on the phone right up until the time of the call, and someone had come to the house and she hung up then. I mean, she might have juiced the history story up a little bit. Or it might have been exactly right.

HI ALL, I've received a couple of general topic emails from Romeena, so I am hoping Dale is OK, and that she just has not checked in with the porch as yet.
ASA--that is such a WONDERFUL news story!! Thanks for sharing it here.
GF--the Dodgers are going to be hard to beat this year!
GF--as the saying goes "Friday for a retiree is just the start of another long weekend!"
ALL-please keep me in your prayers as my CT Scan comes up on Tuesday. I really need to stay calm for this one so that the new cardiologist can see
the goings on in my heart. Thanks.
BOO--my prayers indeed for your brothers!
Glad the new vegan thing is going good.
God bless,

Good morning all.
Way cool video GF. Thanks for posting it. So how was the kiss from Miss Dixie? Was it right on the jaw? Did it feel better than a mules nose? :)
You have my prayers for sure MDC. I am probably the last one to offer suggestions on staying calm for that. I am very claustrophobic. But as I said, I had one done prior to having an ablation and it wasn't a problem at all. So try not to fret to much about it.
Prayers for your brothers Boo. I have a lot of family in California, but most of them are in Southern California. I do have an Uncle further north, but I haven't heard if he has been affected by it. I don't him well, but I am sure we would have heard something if it had been close to him. No news is good news in this case.
And prayers continue for Dale. I hope he is ok.
Well just got back from my weekly grocery shopping. I usually mow the grass on Saturday, but they were predicting rain and a chance of snow today, even here in the valley, so I mowed last night. So I may have to give the old Wheeler a workout today. Yes indeed, that's the plan. Maybe a little college football while deeply imbedded in the Wheeler. Yep, that's what I think I'll do, watch a little football while kicked ba.....

Good afternoon, porch. I don't mean to worry anyone with my absences, but I've been a little out of my normal schedule. I was supposed to go on a three-day trip with the church, to east Texas, little train ride through the piney woods, etc., but when I got up Thursday morning before dawn to be ready when Eloise and Jerry came by to pick me up, I was so short of breath I just couldn't make it. I had to call and tell her not to come, and I stayed home. Naturally, by daybreak, I was much better, and regretted my decision. Then after I talked to Eloise last night and found out it was brutally hot on the train, I was glad once again that I was at home! Things happen as they should most of the time. I cannot handle heat at all anymore.
We still don't really know what my respiratory problem is, or how much of it is actually cardiac. I think it's a combination of both. It comes and goes, and I have good days and bad days. Some days I stay close to the O2, and today, I went grocery shopping and did just fine. Go figure.
Dale is improving, but still has a long way to go. The hospital is releasing him, which I think is a huge mistake, and so does everyone else, but it's not our decision. Carrie absolutely must work, no choice, and he will be alone at home during the day. Not a good idea. I wish I could go out there and stay with him, but with my somewhat precarious health, I could be more of a liability than an asset. Just keep praying.
Well, gotta get busy. My son-in-law is coming up from Fredericksburg to play in a golf tournament over the next couple of days, and will stay here tonight. After that, he will be in a hotel with the team he's playing with. David and Brittney and the boys are coming over, and I'm cooking pork chops for everyone, by request. Blessings, y'all. --Romeena

Good Sabbath all.
Romeena, thanks for checking in. I'm sorry to read of your health issues. I am sure it is very frustrating to not be able to go be with Dale as he is recuperating. My prayers for both of you. I think I would fit in real well with your family. I love pork chops, with mashed taters and gravy. Thems good eats! I have learned how to cook them myself and they are pretty good. I just have to limit how often O do them though because pork is one of those foods I am supposed to stay away from due to gout.
Well better get. We have a conference at Church this week and I have an early morning meeting I need to be at.
Prayers for all for a delightful Sabbath day.

It looks like everyone is taking Dr. Breen's advice
and taking it easy today.
ASA-I hope the confernence went well, and thank you for the
CT scan advice. I know it is a much larger opening,
and since they are doing my chest, they said my head would be out a bit. But thanks also for the prayers! :)
College football is always fun to watch. Spots Bulldogs roll on.
My Cecile makes a great 'stuffed pork chop.' They are outstandingly good, just like a cup of Sanka! :)
SPOT...see any of the Talladega race? That new SUV sounds like a good 'un.
RO--Thank you for checking in...my prayers continue for your son. Was it ever determined what happened to him? Due to my heart, I also get those "shortness of breath" episodes. They are no fun for sure, but only last a few minutes at a time for me. Weird feeling tho.
I went by a church today and the sign said "Sunday Gatherings - 9 and 11 AM. Gatherings? What happened to 'worship?' Sign of the times I guess.
Weel, have a great week my friends...cardio rehab, lab work and Ct on my agenda!
Prayers continue for Californa

Hello Porchsters. I need help finding an episode, or hopefully just a short part of one. Barney is expressing his dismay about the thieving ways of Robin Hood and how the sheriff is portrayed as the bad guy. That leaves Barney wondering how such things are taught to kids. Can anyone link me up?

Also praying for RO's son. I hope he is still improving.
There was a good article in our paper yesterday on "Leave it to Beaver's" first episode on TV in Oct. 1957, 60 years ago! Tony Dow said that he was basically 'typecasted' as Wally from that moment, and found it hard to find roles after the series ended. Like TAGS,
LITB always had a good lesson or moral.
Here is the first ep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyopGPU--I8
It is the one where Wally types a note to beaver's teacher. Some great lines!
The article also mentioned that on average, the word "gee" was used about 12 times per show. :)
CT scan Tuesday morning, so I think I'll hit the hay earlier tonight.
