Afternoon, folks!
Well, Boo...the view from my front porch is a LARGE front yard with a two lane street in front of it and trees, trees, trees, on the other side of the road. To my left, small pasture and a neighbor up a little ways on a hill. To my right, my pond down to the extreme right and more trees, trees, trees across the road with yet another neighbor up on a hill.
G-F - Boy, you sure left the Rangers fans jaw dropped yesterday! Encarnacion pays off immediately!
MDC - My props to your DBacks! Way to stick to the Giants! I still hold a grudge after the Giants beat my Royals in the 2014 World Series. Nice job!
Romeena - If you can squeeze me in, can you come here and do a little weeding for me?!
Boo - Was that a check-up or you need some work done?
Hey to Asa, SPOT, TOM, possum and all you other turncoats!

Sounds like a nice view, John Masters!
My visit to the dentist was a consult visit to decided what work I am going to have done. It looks like I need one tooth capped and one needs a root canal and a cap. I am trying to decide between a root canal and pulling the tooth and putting in an implant. I have good dental insur@nce, thankfully, so I have some options.
I am taking my Erin to the sports med doc on Thursday because the shoulder is getting a lot worse. I think she will probably end up needing some orthoscopic surgery on it. She has been taking an anti inflammatory med and using the heating pad...using a sling at school, but continues to get worse.
I just found out that our dental and eye insur@nce dropped Sean when he turned 22 this week. I have an eye appointment for him this week to get glasses. Bad timing.
I've been busy with lots of catching up with things like dental check ups, medical checkups, etc. We are all behind on everything so my schedule is pretty full for April, between work and appointments for the family. I have also been seeing a nutritionist and am on a good eating plan. I am trying to get back on track to improving my health in 2017. The biggest hurdle so far? Exercise. Yuck.
Well, best go get the kitchen cleaned up after dinner. I made a terrific beef and broccoli in the slow cooker. Man, it was really good. Hope you all have a good evening.
PS-It is getting downright hot here in south texas already.

Good evening, porch. Boo, yes, I remember that visit. It was such a nice time. And yes, my Sugarplum was such a loving little thing. She loved everyone, and was convinced that everyone loved her. Which they did. Toye Starr is a bit busier and more active, but still very loving. I never met a Maltese that wasn't. They're just terrific little dogs, but definitely must be considered indoor dogs. Too tiny to be safely left outdoors, and it would break that tiny heart anyway. I cannot imagine leaving Toye Starr outside. She would be heartbroken.
John Masters, I have just three words to say about weeds. Mulch. Mulch. Mulch. Beyond that, it becomes: Pull. Pull. Pull. It's all right there in Genesis, and I don't know why we would expect it to be any different. "By the sweat of thy brow, etc."
Boo, I made a big skillet of yellow squash, zucchini, onions and tomatoes, and tonight will have my third and final meal from it. I had a few slices of genoa salami to eat with it, put a little grated cheese over the hot veggies, and had some spiced apples for a little sweet. Not a very typical meal, but it works for me. I often do that - cook one big pot of something lo-cal and vitamin-y, then pull whatever's in the fridge in to round it out. If you're not a picky eater, and I'm not, it works very well. I guess you could call it pot luck.
Succotash as I know it is a mixture of corn and baby lima beans, with a very light cream sauce stirred in. You can add just about anything - green onions, finely diced carrots, tomatoes, whatever you want, but the basic main ingredients are corn and lima beans. Got to be the baby limas, though. Once they reach butterbean size, they don't work as well. If I'm not mistaken, it's a dish that the settlers learned from the Native Americans. Personally, I love it!
Blessings, porch! --Romeena

Ha! I just discovered that my leftover squash mixture is pretty small, needs a boost. I happen to have a can of baby limas, think I'll just drain them and add them to the squash stuff. That's what I call a leap-frog dish. Add something new to a small leftover, and it may just "leapfrog" into something left over for tomorrow (I could add some corn, or tomatoes) and who knows? It could last for weeks. Months! Years, even!! (hahaha) --Romeena

I find myself in a place in which I am having to hold onto Jesus and believing that he is holding onto me. I am questioning long-help beliefs; not in the gospel or the Lord Jesus, himself, just other things. That is never an easy place to be, but common among most of us, I guess.

Good morning all. I hope you are all fine and dandy.
Hey Boo, good to hear from you. You are in my prayers for sure.
Romeena, you sound like so many great cooks I have met. We used to employ a feller here who was the office coordinator. He would make our shop lunches that the company would hold once a month. And his food was fantastic. I would always ask his recipe for something he had made, and his response was almost always the same. He really had not followed a recipe. Just had thrown something together that he had kicking around, added some spices or what not along the way to give it some life, and bam, he had a delicious dish. Good cooks just seem to have that magic touch to produce good food. Not one of my talents for sure, but I get by. I kinda have the feeling GF is one of you also. Oh well, some folks were blessed to cook, and others like me, blessed to eat. I know I do my part. :)
Well I would love to sit and chat, but am up to my eyeballs in work. Very busy time of the year for me.
Prayers for all for a nice day.

Good morning, porch. Boo, I'm sorry you're having a rough time lately, and am concerned about Erin. I hope it's just teenage angst she's dealing with, for that will pass, but I have the impression it's more than that. You're a good mother, and you've done everything you should do to set her on a straight and solid path. I know you'll stay the course with her, God will not fail you, and things will eventually look much brighter. Meantime, you have the prayer support of friends, and if there's anything else I can do, don't hesitate to let me know.
Asa, I don't know about being a "great cook", but I do enjoy cooking. I see it as sort of an adventure, not a chore. I gather recipes from friends and family, and have many of them in my memory from growing up in a family of truly great cooks. However, only rarely do I actually follow a recipe to the letter. I see them as a guide, a springboard. For some reason, I just can't take a recipe and follow it strictly. There are a few things where you must do that, like seven-minute frosting, but most things are very forgiving and work well with adjustments. Part of it is just accommodating my own tastes. I like things a little tangy, and often add a squeeze of lemon or a tablespoon or so of vinegar to a dish, whether it's something I cooked or something out of a can. For example, Progresso's Italian Wedding Soup is a very good canned soup, but it's a bit bland for me. I add the juice of half a lemon, and voila! You've got a whole different dish! Both are good, but I prefer the one with lemon. I eat a lot of canned soup, since it's just me here. Quick, easy, and good enough. That doesn't mean I can't still make a good pot of soup, but it's a lot of trouble for one person, and it's impossible to make a small pot of soup. I always end up with a huge pot, and even I, the leftover queen, get tired of it, and I don't really like to freeze things.
Well, gotta run. Got an ESL class this morning, then Joe is coming to help me with a yard project this afternoon. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

I know you all have known her since she was a baby and you care. I wish I could share more with you all. I, as all of you, have been through really difficult times in life...things we just can't understand, especially suffering, but when I look back over the years I remember that God has always saved me. He often didn't do it when I wanted him to and the way I wanted him to, but he has always been faithful. I hang onto that and it gives me strength. I know trouble is something that just comes with life and we all share in it. Thank you again, for always being compassionate and caring.

Good evening, porch. John Masters, if your wife likes that Italian Wedding Soup, suggest that she try a few drops of lemon juice in it. I use half a lemon in a can of soup, but she may prefer less. She could start with a tiny bit and increase it, to her taste. I actually got the idea one day at a Thai restaurant, where I just really like the Tom Yum soup they make. They actually flavor it with the herb lemongrass, but I didn't have any of that, so just used a bit of lemon juice and it worked. If you're not familiar with Tom Yum soup, it's one of those soups that all go by the same name, and can be as different as night and day, depending upon where you find it. Chinese Hot and sour soup is a good example - another favorite of mine, but varies widely depending upon who makes it. Some places pack it full of tofu, and I don't care for that. A little is okay, but not big slabs of it filling the bowl - it makes me think I'm eating whale blubber. Yuck.
Boo, I fully understand you protecting Erin's privacy. Good for you! Just know that we love her, and will continue praying. God knows the problem, and that's all that matters.
Well, guess I'd better turn in. Joe didn't make it here today, had car trouble, so he's coming in the morning. He's gonna wish he came today, because I used the free afternoon to visit the garden center and came home with five bags of shredded mulch, some lights to fill in dark spots in the yard, and a few more plants. I found, of all things, a "tree" lantana! I've never seen one before, and if it does what I think it will do, it will be gorgeous, and butterflies, of course, love it. Oh, I have a butterfly picture published on a website. Here's a link to the site: http://tinyurl.com/n8xckkshttp: Click on the "Share Photos" box, and my butterfly is a Giant Swallowtail, wings spread out flat, as he's enjoying a lantana blossom. I think it's the second one down in the group of pictures. The site manager just used my initials - L.F. - but I wouldn't have minded if he used my name. I'm pretty proud of that picture!
OK, I'm off to slumberland. Sweet dreams, porch! --Romeena

A Good Morning to you, folks!
Romeena - Yep, I'll relay the lemon juice to my wife. She likes to try new things like that. She grew up with her dad making things with added ingredients and experimenting. I remember you recently mentioned having a fountain in your yard. The last house I lived at in Independence, MO. had a cherub fountain with bowl. The water went up thru the cherub, poured out of a gourd it was holding and the water flowed into a big bowl. I used to love to go out there and listen to that ALL the time!
Asa - Happy 39th to you and yours! And as Andy would say.."I'll do 'er, I'll do 'er." Get you that first riding report, that is. The only downer is that I am going to have to get on my lawn and quick! Big patches of it are up to my mid shin! So the first pleasure of it is going to be fleeting. Once I get the yard caught up, I'll probably be able to relax and cruise! LOL!
107217 - Actually, the growth in that video is what my fields look like and what surrounds my creek bridge and some of the pond. I leave that alone. And I am thankful I do! ;-)
Boo - Walk on, walk on.

Good evening, porch. Joe has been here, worked his magic, I planted a few things too, and pruned a bit, and he left at 3. He has to leave that early, or he just never gets home. He lives in a small rural settlement just north of Dallas, without traffic it would take about 35-45 minutes to drive it. If he leaves at 3, there will be some traffic, but he can be home by 4:30. If he leaves at 4:30, he gets home about 7, because the traffic is unbelievable by then. Ridiculous.
Sorry to lose Don Rickles. He was annoying (that was his plan) but he was funny and you had to like him. He was great as Newton Monroe.
John Masters, I have a small koi pond in my yard. It's roughly a figure eight shape, with the south end being about 5'x7' and the north end is about 7'x8'. Where it's "pinched" in the middle, there is a 7'x30" slab of stone lying across the narrow place, providing a bridge. There's a little umbrella fountain in the larger end, which is about 2 1/2' deep, and the smaller end is about 18" deep. At the south end of the smaller part, there's a large boulder, with a hole drilled through it, and a water line connected to a strong pump causes a fountain of water about 5-6" high to bubble up out of the rock and flow back into the pond. The back wall of the pond is part of the wall of a large raised flower island. It was beautiful until the great egret discovered it, and now I've had to trash the pond up with chicken wire over it to keep that fish-guzzling bird away from my pretty babies. Got to figure out something a little less unsightly. I tried the scarecrow thing, that shoots a jet of water toward anything that moves, but it hit me and Eddie more than it ever hit that stinkin' bird. He just jumped up and over it, then went back to fishing. Miserable wretch!
Well, guess I'll go scrape up something to eat. I'm not very hungry. Maybe peanut butter and apple slices will do it. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Thanks for those prayers, everyone. I am doing better today. It was such a beautiful spring day here..one of those rare cool and dry days..blue sky. I had to go into town for an appointment for Erin for her shoulder but there had been a bad accident involving a fuel truck on the bridge that you have to cross to get from where I live to corpus Christi. There is a large harbor and ship channel and a hug bridge over the channel. It was impassable until late this afternoon, so the kids and I traveled the long way through Port Aransas (where the beach is). In order to get to Port Aransas, you have to go over by ferry and it is really pretty. We had a nice drive that way into Corpus and I enjoyed spending some time with the kids. It ended up being a long time because after the appointment with the shoulder doc, I took the kids to eye appointments and got Erin some much-needed glasses and Sean got contacts. We went to a place in the mall so we were able to get eye check ups, and have the glasses made while we ate Chinese at the food court. The glasses were ready in an hour. Pretty neat.
It is such a beautiful night. I just walked the drive way up to the street to throw something in the big trash bin, since it had already been set out for pick up in the morning. It seemed like I could see every star in the sky. I just took the time to stand and look for awhile. Its funny how I forget that all those stars are right there every night and I never even think about them. I need to take more moments like that. I can remember when I was a teen, I used to actually lie on the roof, look at the stars and commune with the Lord. I am feeling pretty worn out..seems like every spare minute is filled, lately, but boy, it sure is important to take time to enjoy life, too.
Well, I had better get myself to bed. I have to get to Corpus early tomorrow to register at the hospital for an endoscopy I am having done on Tuesday, then I have to work tomorrow evening. Whew!
Hope you all have a great day.

Good morning, porch! Spot, I hope the storms calm down for you, I'll bet you've been as busy as a one-armed paper-hanger! What would the rest of us do without you fellers! Angels in hard-hats, I say.
Boo, you sound better. I hope this means things are improving in your world. Prayers continue, my friend. I loved your mention of the stars and the brief spiritual moment while taking out the trash! Do you ever read "Rose Is Rose" in the newspaper comics? I do. It's a delightful little strip about a simple housewife and mom, who fantasizes about being a wild biker-chick. Her husband, Jimbo, is a mild-mannered, hard-working guy who adores her and their son, Pasquale. (Yes, Pasquale. That's pronounced Pahs-kwah-leh, for those with no background in Spanish.) Jimbo always takes out the trash at night, and usually pauses and looks up at the stars for a while. He calls it his "garbage can moment." I'll always think of you, Boo, when I see that in the comic strip now. So sweet.
John Masters, I'm glad you got your mower and it's working well for you. There's nothing like proper tools to make life more pleasant, and free up some leisure time for you. I remember the old reel-type push mower. That was all we had, all anyone had! My cousin and I used to mow my grandmother's yard with one. We were only about six, so we each got on one side of the handle, and pushed together, and got it done! Of course, the grass back then was mostly thin, straggly bermuda grass, not the thick, plush St. Augustine turf we have now.
MDC, I emailed PH last night, but haven't heard from him yet. I'm a bit concerned too, he doesn't usually stay away this long, and he's not one to lurk. He always joins in.
Well, I'd better get busy. Got the bunco girls coming Tuesday night, and have to get the kitchen, entry, and sunroom vacuumed and mopped (ugh) and the living room, dining room and office dusted and vacuumed. A few years ago, that would have been a quick morning's work. Now, it will take me two days. I have to stop quite often and rest and catch my breath, and sometimes it's hard to make myself get up and get back to it. Bette Davis was so right. Old age ain't no place for sissies! Actually, the girls wouldn't care one bit if I didn't do any of that, but I do. I care, and I'm not ready to give up yet. The day will come, but not today.
One thing is for sure, my yard is looking pretty gorgeous, and I'm really enjoying it! Got six more sundrops plants to get in the ground, and they're in gallon cans. Can't plant them with a little handspade, will have to get my shovel. I'll get 'er done, though. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Hey everyone!
I finally got pictures up of my mower and land on my blog! You can click on the pictures to blow them up and get a lot better look! In the picture with the pond, I don't mow clear down to the pond. I mow just one the other side of the driveway you see slope down. Anyway, I hope you enjoy them. Here is my blog address again if any of you need it: http://first1thing.blogspot.com/
SPOT - The storms have really been roaring thru Missouri here. Seems we have a break for awhile.
G-F, MDC - My Royals finally got their first win in Houston after being swept 3 in Minnesota. I know it's way early, but those Twins might need to be kept an eye on!
Romeena - Thanks! Yeah, doing good for the first run!
Hey to Boo, TOM, Asa, possum and the rest of you tradin' on Sundays! Have a great night!

Well,GF,it is what it is, and it aint over til it's over, but I guess it is now over. ha Thanks for the specials, I just hope that sauce doesn't lay on my chest. :)
JOHN--that is one fine looking machine! Hopefully some of it is still made in the USA. Quite sure the B & S engines still are. Also, as I understand, those little wheels on the cutting deck prevent 'scalping' when cutting on a slope. Dang clever of them folks.
Very nice property and pond too!
Racing at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend!!, and the
Masters is in full 'swing'also
APB FOR OUR POOR HORATIO!

Good afternoon, porch. Beautiful day here. A little windy, but not too bad. My "knockout" roses are all blooming so beautifully, and even one little hybrid rose that I thought was a goner after the rose rosette disease swept through here - has put out new canes and is blooming nicely. I lost over a dozen bushes, but a few made it through. I may try planting two or three new ones to see if they'll make it. That virus was awful!
There are some beautiful amaryllis blooming too. Lots of them! I usually move at least eight from the house into the yard every spring, and at least 2/3 of them make it. They are so spectacular, just beautiful. The blooms open up into flowers as big as dinner plates, and are just amazing! Also, my hardy hibiscus are coming back strong. I don't even bother with tropical hibiscus anymore. The hardies are prettier, with much bigger, showier blooms, and they winter over. The tropicals shrivel up and die, even in our relatively mild winters here. The Gerbera daisies are putting on a show - gotta love 'em - they come back every year. A $3 plant, that returns year after year. I have some that are six years old. I buy about 4 every year, and now have them blooming all over the yard. The irises didn't do well this year. I think they need to be divided, and I just didn't get it done. Maybe we'll do that this fall.
Well, better get busy. Bunco is Tuesday night, and I still have to vacuum and mop the kitchen and sunroom, and they're both big rooms. The sunroom is 240 sq ft, and the kitchen is even bigger. And, furniture has to be moved in both areas! I could summon the troops, and my grandsons would be here to help, but the poor kids are so busy with music, baseball, and school, that I just refuse to bother them. Landry has already promised to come spend a few days with me this summer, and we'll clean out kitchen cabinets, closets and get rid of a lot of clutter. Ted is going to install some drawers in one of my under-counter kitchen cabinets, so I can corral all those plastic storage bowls and lids, and not have them falling out on my feet every time I open the cabinet! What would I do without my family and trusted helpers? They sure do make getting old a lot easier! God is good!
Oh, my! There are some red-wing blackbirds in my yard, enjoying the feeders. They're such beautiful birds! They're not here all the time, being migratory, but I sure do enjoy them when they're here.
Blessings, porch! --Romeena

Hey Folks, Good Sabbath to you.
Prayers for the survivors of those despicable and horrific bomb blasts in Egypt. The pictures of the aftermath are just spine curling. Yep, lucky I'm not President of the U.S.! The main cells of ISIS would be bombed, blasted and toasted from here to doomsday! (Box back under porch)
Thanks everyone for the compliments on the mower and property. I have to say it is relaxing and sometimes, I just go down to the pond to watch the water.
Romeena - the winds here are just ridiculous! Up to 35 MPH. It's just roaring. Our poor chickens are out and their feathers almost blow up over their heads! LOL!
Better git. Supper awaits.
Y'all have a great and restful night!

Quite a day in sports...GF--Dbacks took out their brooms today, sorry Buddy, that's the way it goes sometimes. :)
Jimmy Johnson pulls out the come-from-behind NASCAR race, and Sergio Garcia wins the Masters!
Only thing is, I didnt get to see any, as i re-joined to prison ministry today for the first time since my January surgery. I talked about that
whole experience a bit. Then I did a few bars of the "God in the valley" song. me-they, me-they, me-they... :)
Prayers continue,

Hey MDC, I was laid up with an achy breaky back yesterday, so I caught most of the Masters final round. It was pretty good. It looked like Garcia was going to do his usual last 9 fold, but he came back with a huge eagle near the end and won in an extra hole play-off. Very entertaining to watch. Good on you for your Ministry brother. :)
Boo, glad you are getting some time off this week. Everyone needs some down time, and it sounds like you do for sure.
Better hit it. Mondays can be brutal sometimes.

MDC - My Royals open at home today against the A's. Hopefully they can get back in the win column after that disappointing loss at the Astros yesterday! Also glad to hear you got back to ministry. Just watch being dry as dust!
Asa - Hope that back gets to feelin' better!
TOM - You takin' that sunburst special down to that Miami beach?
Hey to Boo, Romeena, SPOT, possum, G-F and everyone else getting ready for fishing season. Remember, it opens at 6:30 so make sure you get your pole in the water at 6:30!
Have a great day, folks!
