July 05, 2016 - Msg 105169: Hey there Pappa Bear! Good to see you on the porch.

Thank you all so much for your kind words..Sterling you put it so well. Thank you, thank you, and thank you Ro for your encouraging words. I certainly want to always be here for all of you. This is a special place and a great support for..let's see..about 14 years for me. :)

Today was a better day. I finally got some blood pressure medicine in Bruce and he went to work and had a decent day..it got his mind off of things. His boss and all the administrators had a meeting while bruce was off and they made sure they all knew about what we were going through. His boss offered him leave, which he declined at this time, and gave him the info for the free counseling services that are offered through his job. We are going to our first counseling session tomorrow afternoon.

I have had a peaceful day here at home. I planned to do nothing but rest but I just got too bored. I ended up doing laundry and some cleaning out of junk drawers and getting rid of old home school curriculum, etc. It felt good to do that. I have been listening to some oldies music on Pandora, which always makes me feel good.

This evening Susan called me because her son's blood pressure is up..too high, I'm afraid. He takes meds for it but he is just under so much stress I guess it is taking a toll. He got layed off from his job so he doesn't have insur@nce, nor can he afford it. He should get to the ER but he wont go. The best I could do is convince him to go the clinic in the morning, first thing. It's sad that we can't get affordable health care as American citizens. If we fall on hard times, we are simply out of luck.

Well, hope you are all having a good evening. Will drop back in tomorrow.

July 07, 2016 - Msg 105193: Good evening, porch. Weird happenings on the porch! I just tried to get on, clicked "The Front Porch", it took longer than usual and then opened "Ask the Writer!" I'd never even seen that page before. I just closed it all out, and started over. The second time, it took me right to the porch, as usual. I think Otis and his moonshiner friend are trying to scare us away!

This is off the subject, but I just have to throw in a plug for LED lights. They're now making them for landscape lights, with the little wedge bases, or the two-prong bases, and I'm here to tell you - they work! Good bright light, and they don't burn out after a week or two, like low-voltage bulbs do. They cost about twice what a low-voltage bulb costs, but I've got one burning out there, my original "test" bulb, that has been in use for at least six months. In that time, I would have replaced a low-voltage bulb at least twice, maybe three or four times. Sometimes progress is a good thing!

I went up to the church this morning for a showing of a movie, "Unconditional." It was very, very good, and is available on Netflix, for those who have it. It will give you a look into the other side of life for some people, and will demonstrate that things are not always as they appear. I highly recommend it.

Floyd, if you can find some of our posts, that would be great, but if not - well, if we were sitting and talking on a real porch, the breeze would have carried our conversation away, it would not have been recorded. Life is just like that sometimes. No harm done. We appreciate what you have done for so many years, and have done so well. If the host fails, you can't help that.

Guess I'd better go feed my little canine friends. They are so funny when they start rough-housing. They get very rowdy, and tiny Toye Starr really holds her own. Also, Diesel has disemboweled almost all of Starr's toys. I've got a ball of fluff that I've picked up that would fill a basketball, packed tight! After the four-legged wrecking crew goes home, I guess I'll spend quite a few evenings poking stuffing back into toys and sewing them up. I've protected her favorites, like her pink heart and her bunny, but the rest are looking a bit skinny and flat these days. It seems to be something with these Wheaten terriers - Bentley used to do the same thing, though not quite with the determination and gusto that Diesel exhibits. He's a little wild man!

Have a great evening, porch! --Romeena

July 08, 2016 - Msg 105197: Had to look up what you were referring to in Dallas, Boo. Sickening and scary. Scariest part is that we have a President... did you get that, a PRESIDENT, who encourages through his rhetoric - and very likely sanctions and condones - this type of murderous behavior toward the police. Their blood is on his, and all the race baiter's, hands.

Sorry you had to go from one sad event to witness another on the news, Boo. May God give you peace tonight. And all of America.

On to other news if I may. Our 17th wedding anniversary is this Saturday. I don't know why these things just seem to spring out of nowhere. I mean, I know about it weeks earlier and I think I will have time to think up something to do, but then WHAMMO, it is the night before the anniversary eve and I haven't a clue as to what to get or do, and I end up having to scramble and think up something at the last minute. What causes that?
I did order a tropical orchid arrangement for delivery to her office tomorrow, since I don't think anyone(well, wives anyway) should go without flowers in their office, even if the official anniversary is on Sat.

Well, good night all. And thanks Floyd for fixing the porch. Even those italics I was seeing are gone. And Romeena, you said it very well about our conversations being carried away on a breeze if we were talking on a real porch. Some real sensible truth there.

July 08, 2016 - Msg 105198: Wow! Floyd, you are a caution! Your education was definitely worth every penny. I can't believe you retrieved all that and got it back on the porch. You're a wonder! Thanks so much for all that you do.

I had been watching DVR stuff, hadn't heard about the shootings in Dallas until I came on the porch just now. Good Lord in Heaven! What is this country coming to? Sterling, you're right about the blood being on the hands of the race baiters. If you just watch the news, you would think the whole black population is guilty, but that is just not so. The majority do not want the violence any more than whites do, but the news makes it look different. The videos I found online show a young black man who was just distraught, and stunned by the whole thing, and a young black woman who was awash in tears over it, and talking about how "they just shot that officer down!" As for those who commit the violence - just what do they think this world would look like if it weren't for the police? And how do they explain the statistics? A little quick online checking indicates that more than 90% of murders of black victims were committed by a black person. Where is the outcry about that? I will not deny that in a few cases, a police officer may act inappropriately, whether from panic, fear or whatever reason and a tragedy happens. However, that is not the norm, and even when that happens, if the victim had been home with his mama in the middle of the night, instead of out holding up a convenience store or whatever, he wouldn't have gotten shot. I don't think we've had any cases of a police officer setting up an ambush and shooting black folks down "just because." Yet that's what happened here tonight. Because some officers killed someone in Minnesota and in Louisiana, five officers in Dallas were murdered in retaliation. It makes no sense. I don't know the circumstances in either of those shooting cases, but even if it was outright murder by the officers involved (which I doubt) that doesn't justify murdering five policemen who had absolutely nothing to do with it. Black lives do matter. ALL lives matter. Meantime, our Dear Leader is wringing his hands over global warming, and putting on his grim face and talking about how Trayvon could have been his son. Lord Jesus, help us! We have nowhere else to turn!

Thanks for the concern for my safety, but I assure you, I'm miles from downtown Dallas, and there is not enough money to pay me to go there right now. This world is going insane. Somewhere, the insanity has got to stop, and most of the black folks who feel the same way. White folks don't have a corner on that market. --Romeena

July 08, 2016 - Msg 105199: Good morning all. Rough morning to hear the news going on in Dallas. I will refrain from offering my thoughts because I would get carried away.

Thanks for the fix Floyd. I appreciate all you do in keeping Mayberry alive and kicking all these years later. I hope you and GF and all are having a wonderful time at the meet up.

Well my back has been tender all week and last night it just locked up on me. So I am off today. I need to see if my back cracker can see me today for an adjustment. Very sore.

I watched a couple of episodes of Perry Mason last night. Saw all kinds of TAGS folks. The visiting preacher from New York was a prosecutor on one. But Perry whipped him. I guess he couldn't take it and left the legal profession to join the ministry. Then I saw Will Wright (Ben Weaver #1) on another episode. Then I saw Rita Campbell on another one. She ended up poisoning somebody. It was tragic.

Well I better go get some ice for my misery laden back.

A sad day for Dallas Texas where 12 officers and 2 civilians were shot last night. And all of this happened during a very peaceful "Black Lives Matter" march by 800 demonstrators on a public street. And although there were about 100 police officers assigned to this event, they were dressed in normal street clothes instead of riot gear that could have offered them some protection. Rest in peace to the 5 officers who died as the result of their wounds. And prayers for those civilians and police who were wounded.
I hope this incident does not result in copycat shootings.

And thank you to our Floyd for restoring the Front Porch postings. Since this is the second time this has happened recently, what can be done to prevent it from happening again? Was it the same server both times?

July 08, 2016 - Msg 105202: Good afternoon, porch. I've been watching the TV news, and the coverage of the prayer rally in Thanksgiving Square in downtown Dallas. It has been interesting. One thing, a seemingly small thing, really resonated with me. I don't know whether it hit anyone else the same way, but it got my attention. Mayor Mike Rawlings, in the course of his address, said this: "This is a prayer rally, so I guess I can quote St. Paul" and he proceeded to quote I Cor. 13:13 - "Now abideth faith, hope and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." What struck me is that he felt he had to justify the quoting of the Bible in a public, city-owned place. Have we really sunk that low? I think that little remark puts the spotlight on what is wrong in America today. All this 'politically correct' garbage is constricting and hindering the freedoms we once knew. The tail is wagging the dog.

Blessings! (Can I still say that?) --Romeena

July 08, 2016 - Msg 105203: Sounds like he was apologizing for quoting from the Bible, Romeena. At a prayer rally.
Yes, I think we have sunk that low, thanks to the scourge that is political correctness. Want to get your blood really boiling(and your nerves even more, nervous)? See what else this pc junk is getting us, and right in the state next to me, in Minnesota: http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=55133
Thanks democrats, and squishy republicans. Yes, I know, "How I vote, brother, is my business," Well unfortunately, what some have voted for is becoming ALL of our business, if we want America(and the American people) to survive with the traditions that made her great intact. But at this point, we will be lucky to just survive.
Even so Lord Jesus, come quickly.

Thanks for the anniversary well-wishes. Still don't know what we are going to do tomorrow. Wife had wanted to go with the kids to a Japanese Bon dance in Chicago tomorrow. But with tensions the way they are right now, I am not sure it would be wise to venture into Chicago. Besides which, I have the mortgage to pay before the 16th, and it takes quite a lot of gas just to get to Chicago from here. So financially it is not a good idea either.
I don't know. I know it is kind of traditional and maybe even cliched, but I am thinking maybe just a dinner out or something.
Ah well.
Oh btw, the floral shop didn't have the orchids, so they sent some lavender flowers instead. Not exactly the tropical look I was hoping for, and it looked kind of lopsided when the wife sent me a picture of it. I'd like to say maybe I won't use them again, but since they are the only floral shop in town....

I have noticed on the color TAGS episodes I am watching, that there are quite a lot of Howard Sprague-centered episodes. Not that I don't like Howard. It was just something I noticed. Still waiting for the tropical island one, and the bowling one with him in it. I rather like those.

Nice and cooler here today, which is nice after the humidity we have been having lately.

July 09, 2016 - Msg 105208: Good evening, porch. Sterling, when I heard Mayor Rawlings make that comment, it didn't sound like an apology. It sounded more like a subtle commentary on the idiocy of all the PC stuff. It was more like he was daring anyone to call him out for it, since it was, after all, a prayer rally. What I heard was a veiled challenge and a rebuke to anyone who would make an issue of him quoting scripture at such a time as this. My response was disgust that he would even have to give consideration to whether he could "get away with it" or not.

Tom, I'm sorry your sister isn't doing well, but I'm not surprised. As seriously ill as she was, her reaction is not unusual. Please don't expect her to just be her old self. Truthfully, it may not happen. I'm sorry, and will continue to pray for her, and for you.

July 09, 2016 - Msg 105209: Very sorry to hear about your sister's difficulties, TOM.

Happy anniversary, Sterling.

I cant believe I am still awake at 2am. Erin got back from camp today and she had an amazing time, but coming home and facing things has been hard. I had to lie down with her before she was able to go to sleep. I think it might be a tough road in the days ahead..I hope I'm wrong, though. She just seems to have such a battle with anxiety that it just overshadows everything. I know she will get better but it will take time. It doesn't help that her two closest friends are in crisis right now, either. Her best friend Tyra is in turmoil because she has a mom and no dad, and mom is in a relationship with an abusive, crazy man. Tyra is afraid of what he might do, and when all of this happened next door, her fears escalated. She has another close friend who is a boy and he is troubled and clinging to Erin. She is afraid to distance herself because he has threatened suicide in the past..not if she stopped the relationship, but because he is just suffering. I don't know the story about his family but it sounds like he doesn't have it easy. I hate to do it, but I may have to limit her time with friends so we can help her with all that she is going through right now.

Anyway, I am pretty tired tonight. I made a big dinner for Erin for her first evening back. I have been trying to catch up on some chores on my days off but I find that I am no spring chicken anymore and it just isn't easy. ;)

How long will you have Diesel, Ro? He sounds so cute.

Time to hit the ironing board.

Tom, so sorry to read that about your Sister. I pray she will do better.

Boo, I am sure Erin will be working through this for some time to come, as you all will most likely. But time will heal.

Hey GF, Sounds like you are having a good old time buddy. Glad to hear you controlled that urge to grab a roller and brush and help out. That was a close one. lol

Mercy sakes, my back is a mess. I got to the Doctors yesterday, and he did his magic, but I am wondering if it slipped back out. I can barely walk. And I am in a bad mood. Nothing sets me off than when my back goes south on me. Patient I am not!

Oh well, I can catch up on my dvr watching I reckon. Romeena, I was teasing you about what chicken tenders were a couple of weeks ago. Well the other day I was watching an episode of "Chopped" and what do suppose one of the mystery ingredients was? Duck kidneys is what they called it. Later, they confessed it was in fact duck "tenders". Poor ducks. Makes me wonder if their quacker's got high pitched after that.

Last night I watched a Perry Mason that looked like a TAGS old home week. One episode had the following folks, Briscoe Darling, Malcom Tucker, Mr. Maxwell (the feller who was recording the singing), the lawyer the State sent to prosecute Andy with the bogus charges leveled against him, and the Drug Store owner that hired Opie to run the snack counter. It seems like there was another one, but I don't remember now who. Anyway, Mr. Maxwell ended up with a screwdriver in his heart. And in the end, Malcom Tucker done it. What a shame in this world!

Guess I better go get the ice pack. Stupid back!

Prayers for all of ya!

July 09, 2016 - Msg 105213: Good morning, porch! It's beautiful here today, Eddie worked his magic in the yard yesterday, so the view from my window is lovely. Sun is shining, gentle breeze swaying the trees, and it's cool in the house! Can't beat a deal like that.

We've had a rough couple of weeks, with all the craziness that's going on. Maybe things will settle down for a while. Folks, we've just got to put away the anger and the resentment and the hatred, and realize that we're all God's children. We've also got to realize that when you act like an idiot and set out to rob and abuse other people, you're going to run into law enforcement, and they're not going to think you're "really a good boy at heart", like your mama does. They're going to take you down. You just watch, that nut that killed the five officers in Dallas - his mama at some point is going to be telling us all what a good man he was and the police didn't have to send in a robot with a bomb and blow him up. The police found a huge arsenal in his home - where he lived with his mama - as well as a large supply of materials for building bombs. What, she didn't know that? In her own home? Please. Good boy? If it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, there's a pretty good chance it's a duck. He was looking, acting and talking like a terrorist - and surprise! He was a terrorist! He may not have been Islamic, but he terrorized a city for a good while, and killed people he didn't even know, so that makes him a terrorist in my book. I wonder what excuses he tried to offer to God?

Well, enough of that. Boo, just keep the communication open with Erin, and let her vent her feelings. You seem to do that very well with your kids, and it's so important. She's got a good foundation, she'll be okay in time.

Asa, my dad put up with a tricky back for many years, often walking all bent over and in a lot of pain, and flatly stating "I'll never let them cut on my back!" It finally got so bad he couldn't stand it any longer, had a 30-minute surgery done, came home the same day with (literally) a band-aid on his back, and never had another bit of trouble with it. I don't know what the problem is with yours, maybe that wouldn't work for you, but it surely did for him. Life is too short to spend it in pain if you don't have to.

Yes, Boo, Diesel is cute. Very cute! He's a wild man, and has destroyed most of Starr's toys, but he's so adorable it's impossible to do anything but love him. He's not even a year old, so he's just a puppy. A big-footed, mop-headed, galumphy puppy, who is well named. Diesel. It's like having a Mack truck running through the house at times. He's good for Starrbaby, though. She's almost nine, and he's stirring her up and getting her moving and playing. She doesn't act like an old dog yet, and with him around, maybe she never will. Blessings, porch! --Romeena

July 09, 2016 - Msg 105214: Prayers Boo and Tom and all in need..Asa hope that back gets better..Oh my Romeena Diesel sounds like a puppy full ! Been fighting these storms here in the south...whew looks like more this way here at work till 6am will be in and out...hot wings in oven !...SPOT

July 09, 2016 - Msg 105215: Thanks for those encouraging words concerning Erin, Ro. She got a good night's sleep and slept a good part of the day and things look brighter now. She has always been one of those kids who is greatly effected by a lack of sleep.

Well, concerning the shootings in Dallas, my sister was talking to me about the way they stopped fooling with the shooter and sent a mechanical robot in the room with a bomb to finish him off. She said that is the way they do things in Texas. I said, "It's ironic..it was a black police chief making the decision to take out a black white-hating terrorist, using a robot with a bomb. You can't make this stuff up". Crazy shizzil.

Well Asa, I certainly feel you frustration because I am the same way. I cant bear when back trouble throws a kink into my work and such. Drives me crazy. Hope you are well soon.

Yes, MDC..if only we could go to Mayberry for awhile...sit on the porch...drink a bottle of pop...listen to Andy and Peggy sing Down in the Valley...that would do it. :)

Glad you are having a great time, G-F. Maybe someday I will make it to Mayberry Days.

Boo

July 09, 2016 - Msg 105216: Good evening, porch. Yep, they took care of that murdering sniper, for sure. I think they made the right decision, in fact the only decision that made sense. The miserable scum had already killed five officers and wounded six more - why give him a chance to kill anybody else? And yes, it was ironic that the decision to send the bomb in was made by a black police chief, but that just illustrates that it's not all black people who cause the problems. There are some sorry, criminal-minded blacks, just as there are some sorry, criminal-minded whites. In other words, there are good and bad people in any group. I just wish the black community as a whole could see it that way, and stop feeling like they're being singled out when a white cop kills a black thug. White cops and black cops both kill a white thug, and you don't hear a word about it. Also, I noticed on the news reports during the shooter's rampage - as soon as the first shots were fired, all those folks who were there to demonstrate against the police took off running, and left the police officers to handle the shooter. Hmmm. Mind you, I'd have run too, but then I wouldn't have been there in a protest march against the police. Well, as the king said in "The King and I" - Is a puzzlement!

Have a restful Sabbath, everyone. --Romeena

July 10, 2016 - Msg 105223: Good Sabbath friends. Thanks for the prayers and advice for my back. This one has been real bad. I was unable to even walk last night. Horrible spasms. I have been using ice on it, but this morning I tried heat and that seems to have eased the pain a bit.
Romeena, when I first injured my back 20 years ago, my Doctor told me I should not consider surgery unless I had no other choice. I had a co-worker at the time warn me that the worst thing he ever did was allow his back to be operated on. He had been through 4 or 5 back surgeries, and he said each one made him worse. So that is one of the reasons I have resisted I suppose. But I have to tell you, if I have many days like I had yesterday, I will have reached that point of having no choice. This has been the worst pain I have had in many years.
MDC, I have a number of exercises I do for my back that is on that list. And I have been very diligent in doing them every day. And I was pretty sure they were helping. I have increased my workout time on the treadmill lately trying to bring my blood pressure down. I can only attribute that to my back hurting so bad now. I don't go fast on it, but I do put it on an incline to get my heart rate up. I was feeling real good about things until this hit me. Now I just don't know what to think. I am pretty bummed out. But this kind of pain puts me in a bad mood.

GF, Loved those pics. Looks like y'all had a good old time. I am glad you got to go. Sorry you missed it Possum. Are you still headed out this way?

Spot, I hope you got your nap and your preachin' in.

Boo, glad to hear Erin is doing better. My oldest is the same way. If that boy don't get his shut-eye, he's a mess. He would have gone krazy with Gomer as a house guest. He needs 8 or more a night. A lot like his Mom. Shoot, I can't remember the last time I slept for 8 hours. If I get 6, I wake up and am done for the night. I wonder what causes that?

Well no preaching for me today. Just sitting around and watching tv. I try to get up and move around a bit each half hour or so, just to try and keep things loose. I hope it works out.

Asa

July 10, 2016 - Msg 105224: Good afternoon, porch. I'm about ready to leave to go out to David and Brittney's house until Tuesday. The boys are back from camp, but D&B are on the way home from Wales, on a two-day stopover in London, so won't be here until Tuesday evening. The boys could have just stayed here with Eloise and me, but Hudson has band camp every morning, so has to be near his school. We'll head out there in a little bit, and just dig in for the duration. I'm taking one change of clothes, my makeup and toothbrush, and my insulin, and not much else. It's all in one little diddybag. I learned a long time ago to travel light. We're not going to be going to a ball or anything. Anyway, I probably won't be back on the porch until Tuesday, or possibly Wednesday. Didn't want you sending out any APBs or anything.

Asa, I hear you, and what you're saying was very good advice twenty years ago. However, there have been some remarkable advances in back surgery, with the advent of scopes and lasers. I'm not necessarily advising it, but just suggesting that you go see a good back surgeon and get an opinion, with today's technology in mind. Life is just too short to spend it in pain if you don't have to, and I know you have a lot of responsibilities that require you to be mobile.
I would emphasize the GOOD back surgeon. Ask your primary doc for a referral. Ask people who have had surgery recently. Check credentials. If you know any nurses, especially those who might work in orthopedics, ask who they would go to. Ask other doctors, not just your primary. I just hate to think of you in all that pain and restriction of movement, when it might not be necessary anymore.

Well, I guess I'd better got moving. The boys are at Eloise's house, and I'm sure are anxious to get home to their own beds and routine. Blessings - see you in a couple of days. --Romeena
