Sterling- thanks for the video. I also looked at a few others whilst I was there. I'll tell my chiro about it.
Also, regarding your TV, did you say that you have an old style TV with a converter box? If so, because all new flat screens are set to go, you may not have noticed on the remote that there is a "decimal point" button, usually in the lower left of the number pad. I get so many channels because I can enter
numbers like 10.2, thus getting "digital channel" "ten-point-two." etc. Have you tried doing that
to get extra channel?. Like, for here, ME-TV is at "7.2".
Hope all are having a good relaxing Sabbath day.
I have contiously tried to increase my just plain old worship of the Lord, trying to be more of a witness, salt, and light lately.
Well, take care all,

Thanks Asa. I didn't even make it through church today. I think it was mostly the pain medication I am taking. I've taken it before, but I guess I am not used to it yet. I figured I'd better leave before I fell over. The rotten part is, I was feeling pain even with taking the meds. Really thinking about going back to the physical therapist, at least to get a refresher on some of the core strengthening exercises, and of course to see if anything can be done to alleviate this current round of "miseries".
You're welcome, MDC. And no, we have newer tvs, but we have the one in the living room connected to the cable box. We used to be able to view the cable channels even without the box on all of our tvs, but now since the switch to all digital, we would have to pay extra to get boxes for all the tvs. And they get enough money from me already.
Thanks Floyd, for keeping the porch spider free!

August 03, 2015 - Msg 102231:
Welcome home, auh2o. We've missed you. You always have something interesting to say, and today is no exception. Really? A bear in your yard? Does this happen often? You said "again", so I take it you've had these visitations before? Tell us!!! My goodness! The most exotic things that ever come through my yard are raccoons, opossums, and a skunk (rarely). Nothing threatening about those guys, but if I thought there might be a bear out there, I'd never go out after dark again, at least not without a flashlight and something that would make a lot of noise, to scare it.
Last night I discovered that I've had water running beneath my fireplace, and soaking the carpet pad in that corner of the room, probably for several days. Behind the fireplace, there's a closet that opens onto a hallway, and contains the furnace and air handler. The condensation pipe drain for the a/c empties into a standpipe in that closet, which apparently had become clogged. Thus, the condensation from the a/c was just overflowing the pipe, running down the side, across the closet floor and down behind the fireplace, under it and out into the living area. It's a big room, and days may pass before I have reason to walk across that area, so I don't know how long this has been going on.
David and Jerry unclogged the standpipe and stopped the process, but now I've got wet carpet in a semi-circle extending out about six feet around the front of that corner fireplace. I've got the ceiling fan and a box fan blowing on it, the a/c set lower than usual to help pull the moisture, and I'm hoping I can fix this without too much trouble and expense. The water was clear, so there's no discoloration, except for dark marks where furniture was sitting. Once I get it dry, I'll have my carpet cleaner friend come and steam clean it, and I think it will be okay. If not, and the carpet has to be replaced, well....I have a $1700 deductible on my insur@nce. Eeek. Seems like there's always something!
Well, guess I'd better get busy around here. I cooked dinner for the family last night, nine of us, and the dishwasher didn't hold everything. Got to go reload! Blessings, everyone. --Romeena

Howdy, porch. Sterling, I've always made it a point not to get on the wrong side of a skunk! I grew up in the country, so I know the critters. I've always found that if you mind your business, he'll mind his. I don't challenge them, I don't argue with them, and I stay out of their way. I've never been sprayed yet. I know there's a first time for everything, but so far, so good. Actually, many years ago, a mama skunk raised a litter of four little skunks in our tool shed. A growing tree was leaning against the little shed, and had scooted it back, so it hung over the concrete slab by about four inches. She therefore had easy entry, made a nice little nest in one corner, and raised her family. She got used to seeing us in the yard, and even tolerated my husband getting the mower out of the shed. We just made it a point to avoid her corner, not to move the things that were near her, and she never got upset. They stayed in the shed during the day, but at night we'd see her lead her little brood out, across the yard, under the gate and away. They always returned before dawn. Eventually those babies grew up (they were so cute!) and they all left the shed. We actually kinda missed them.
Well, gotta run. I've got my car trunk packed full with sacks of old newspapers. Will take them to the Humane Society here in town and unload. They shred them for pet bedding. I've got to have an empty trunk in the morning, because Dave and Brittney and the boys are coming by for me to take them to the airport. They're flying out to the West Coast, to rent a car and drive up into Oregon. I think their ultimate goal is a whale-watching tour. Anyway, they'll have a lot of luggage, so I need an empty trunk. The boys loaded it all up for me last night, to get it out of the garage, but I forgot about needing it empty tomorrow. Oh well, it's making me finally get it all out of here.
Blessings, porch! --Romeena

Spot-thanks for breakfast, that's some eating.
The bear situation is not as hazardous as it may sound. We have had them in the yard a few times but no encounters. We do not have any of the brown bears in these parts. We have black bears and unless in are in the way of their exit I am told they are much more scared of you than you should be of them. Now, quite a few years back there was a bobcat in the area. It crossed the road right in front of us and I'll tell ya that gave me a start. It was small, nothing like the ones out west but yikes.
We do have lots of skunks they must like the woods or something.

So, I go and get a referral to the physical therapist again, and I wake up today, and my back is a whole lot better. I still feel some soreness, but nothing like the pain I was feeling last week Thursday.
While I am grateful that it has letup(though not totally), I am also wondering if I should even go through with the therapy now? Or if I should just continue to do what I am doing.
I still kind of want to get a refresher on some of the exercises and ask some questions, but I would feel dumb if by the time I manage to get in, my back pain has subsided completely.

August 04, 2015 - Msg 102248:
Good afternoon, porch! Sterling, isn't that the way it always goes? My husband used to say that the best way to fix your car was to call and make an appointment with a mechanic. By the time you get the car to the shop, it will have fixed itself. In this case, I think I'd keep the appointment, explain the situation just as you've outlined it here, and at least get the drill in mind on the exercises.
Asa, I'm so sorry about that extra root canal. They are not fun (I've only had one, hope never to have another) and to do it twice on the same tooth is just really an insult. Just push on through it, eventually the problem will be fixed.
Oh yes, MDC. I still have my Caddy. It's almost twelve years old, looks like brand new, and runs like a fine watch. It's got 84,000 miles on it, which is nothing to that North Star engine. I've now had five total strangers approach me on parking lots and ask me if I would be willing to sell it. Four of them were older men, and one woman asked. However, my son in law has his bid in, and he will win, when the time comes. He restores antique and classic cars and resells them, but he said he would keep my car. It's an '04, the last of the roomy Sedan deVilles, and I plan to keep it until the state makes me give up my license. It's pretty, just enough gingerbread on the body, just clean and classic, and it's carmine red.
As for the carpet, my carpet cleaner friend came today. He has an "extractor", a device that he stands on to apply pressure, and a vacuum sucks up the water and carries it to a reservoir in his truck. When he was finished, he dumped about five gallons of water on the driveway! Then he set up two big airblowers, and they're roaring away in there right now. He left his little moisture-detector tool with me, and told me to check the area every morning, and keep the fans running until the device no longer finds water and beeps. Then he'll come back next week and clean the carpet to remove any marks left by the water, or where furniture was sitting. I asked him about cleaning the carpet today, but he said the discoloration would just wick back up into the carpet as long as the pad is wet. There are a couple of unrelated spots on the carpet (thanks, Toye Starr) that need to be cleaned when he comes back, but right now they're under the furniture that's sitting in the middle of the room. I'll probably come out of this for about $300. It could have been much, much worse.
Well, I need a nap. I was up very early this morning, to take Dave and Brittney and the boys to the airport. They had an 8 a.m. flight to San Francisco. Rather than transfer all their luggage to my car, we just went in Brittney's Tahoe, which meant I had to drive it back to my house! Big old thing! Drives nice, though, and has very good visibility, no blind spots. She's got over 200k miles on it, and David has one as well, which has over 400k on it! The engine has never had a major overhaul, and the thing runs like a top. That ought to make a good commercial.
Well, I'm off to find that nap. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Glad your water damage was minimal. Amazing how much condensate those a/c units can put out. And it that is the only thing the drain has going through it, it's very common for them to build up algae and plug up. I have one at work in a room that is a real pain to get to. So I bought this little blast gun at the a/c shop a while back. It takes the small air cartridges. It has an end that will fit nicely over the drain. Stick it in and give it a blast, and blewie, the drain is opened right up. Has saved me a lot of headaches.
Sounds like a lot of wild life at your place auH2o. You ever see any lake loons? :)
Had a nice soaking rain here yesterday. Rained all day long. We seldom see an all day rain here this time of year. Supposed to get another one in on Saturday. We need the water for sure.

I think the drying out of that carpet is going to take a while. I poked at it with the moisture-finder, and some small areas are registering dry, but most of it still beeps. The outer edges are drying, where the least amount of water had seeped into it, I guess, but up near the fireplace, where it entered the room, it's still pretty wet. Jerry says it was probably algae in the standpipe that clogged it, and to pour a little bleach down that pipe every couple of weeks, especially in the summer. Do you HVAC boys agree, or have any other suggestions? This is really a nuisance, and I'd just as soon that it didn't happen again.
Well, gotta go pick up Eloise. She has a dental appointment, and then we both have pedicures scheduled after that. You know, I never had a pedicure in my life until a few years ago. I always thought it was just a bit self-indulgent, and I could do it myself. Well, that's the key phrase. I could do it myself. These days, I can't. After my back surgeries, I just can't reach my toes that well. (Weight doesn't help, either.) So, I get a pedicure every couple of months, and enjoy it.

Not sure how many here are on FB, but I recently posted there on how I was quite the marble expert in grade school. If words like clearies, aggies, cat-eyes, steelies, or shooters sound familiar, then you
know what I am talking about. ha One time I beat the school bully. He was p--s-ed, but I held my ground as I held his marbles!!
I also brought up how we used to sit in front of the TV on Saturday mornings watching the "test pattern" until cartoons started. Ones like Ruff and Reddy, Tom and Jerry, Huckleberry Hound, etc. Fun to reminisce. Good Sabbath to all,

Hey MDC, good on you for beating those bullies! Sometimes you gotta put them in their place! I think those guys must be in Washington now. Cuz we all know they all have lost their marbles down there!..tehehaha..... Not only that, but some of those marbles are really worth some $$$ nowadays ....
Not only did we watch the "test" pattern (I passed those tests) but when they signed off for the night they played the National Anthem...🇺🇸 What a concept! 🇺🇸 Along with taking prayer out of school is when the decline in this country started.. Do I get an Amen as REV used to say?.... Just my opinion, but I happen to feel I'm right....
G-F.....

I'll give you an Amen GF. We as a Nation have turned our back on God and look at the mess we are in as a result. And I don't believe God is punishing us for it. Rather it is simply the consequences of choosing to turn away from Him. As Andy would say, "what a shame in this world".
I agree with MDC. You should make a moulage of them squirrel prints. They might tell you a lot. You better get Updyke to come help you out. :)
Great memories MDC. Playing marbles. I had a real love for "steelies" for some reason. Loved it when I won one, and hated it when I would lose one. Remember the bigger marbles? Somewhere in size between a golf ball and a baseball. Boy, if I got a steelie in that size, why I was pumped. I got a good chuckle with your comment about how you held your ground as you held his marbles. That could be taken the wrong way. LOL
So good to see you posting a bit more Boo. You are sorely missed around here dear. I do hope and pray all is going well for you and yours.
Possum, I am so glad you got to go the meet up and meet GF and Floyd. It looks like you all had a good time. I enjoyed watching Floyds podcast and pics of the event. I sure hope to make one of those events someday.
Ro, I tried my hand at a pork roast yesterday, and it came out pretty good. It took a little longer to cook than I figured, but in the end, I ate it and am alive today to talk about it. That is my definition of successful cooking. It wasn't smoking when I pulled it out of the oven or nothing either. :)
Go back for my final dentists visit tomorrow for my now famous "toot" canal. It's feeling pretty good, so I hope all is well.
Sterling, I hope your back is doing better. Keep after them exercises. I do believe they help a lot.
Well I better go rustle up some breakfast before I go to preachin. If I don't, my tummy starts growling. I have created a monster there. If I don't feed it regular like, it carries on something terrible.
Prayers for all.

Good afternoon, porch! Where is Tom? He hasn't been in his rocker in quite a spell. Has anyone heard from him?
G-F, that's hilarious, the squirrel tracking through your paint. The little rascal! I hope he wiped his feet when he got home. If not, Mrs. Squirrel probably gave him what-for.
Asa, I have always found pork roast to be hard to cook. I like my beef rare, so I can decide a beef roast is finished pretty much whenever I wish, and I'll like it, but pork needs to be done. Problem is, there's a fine line between "done" and "overdone." If you cross that line, pork can be terribly dry. I know, chefs will tell you these days that pork can be served with a bit of pink showing and it's okay, and that's probably true. The notion of pork needing to be very well done dates back to the days before inspection, and when folks were raising their own pork. Here's a link: http://tinyurl.com/p74wfux This explains it well. However, in spite of this documentation, I still can't warm up to the idea of pork that's not well done. I don't have to have it charred, it can still be juicy, but not pink. Therein lies the rub. The window between "juicy but done", and "bone dry", must be about ten seconds. I have a hard time getting it right. So, Asa, if your roast was reasonably edible, ya done good!
Well, the carpet is dry. No more beeps from the moisture sensor. Now, guess what I did to make sure this doesn't happen anymore. I went to Amazon, and for $18 I ordered one of those bed-wetting sensors. I'm going to wrap a washcloth around that standpipe, clamp the device's sensor to the washcloth, and if that pipe clogs and starts to overflow again, the washcloth will be the first thing to get wet, and will sound an alarm! Pretty sneaky, huh? If it ever did that while I was out of town or something, it could fill my den up like a swimming pool! Anyway, the carpet cleaner man will be here on Wednesday to clean the carpets, and I guess all will be well.
And now - I believe I left a nap lying around somewhere, probably in the vicinity of my big old chair. I think I'll go see if I can find it. In just a minute, I'll have one tiny dog curled in my lap, one big old fluffy-headed dog snoring by my feet, and it will be so peaceful. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

That's pretty clever, Romeena! Glad you got your carpet dry.
I have kind of the same problem with our a/c, but with condensation coming from the air handler unit down in the basement. I haven't really done anything about it because the water just goes across the concrete floor and into the sump pump, which takes care of it from there. There is a hose from the unit to the pump basin, but the water is leaking from the unit and just goes on the floor...
and I just had a weird thought. Now from Romeena's problem and solution, I wonder if the unit is leaking because the hose is plugged up somehow. I never thought of that, and I will have to check that out. Hopefully I will just have to put in a new piece of hose.
Thanks Asa. My back is actually feeling much better, and I made it through church today. I also think I made it since I am not taking any of my pain medication.
The physical therapist told me last week to keep doing back stretches, and apparently that has helped improve my condition. I see her again on Monday, and I am hoping she will give me the go ahead to start biking again. Man, I hate walking. You just can't get anywhere, and it's hotter. I would hate to not be able to bike for the rest of the summer, especially since here in WI our summer is almost over.

ASA--I thought of that after I had posted it. Not sure if anybody would notice! ha
One other thing that I was pretty good at was with a yo-yo! Do they even make them anymore? I could do cat's cradle and a few other tricks, walk the dog and around the world. One time we had the duncan yo-yo champ come to our school for a demonstration. That was cool.
I have seen infomercial for 'power pressure cooker.' and am thinking about getting one.
Seems like they really make fall-off-the-bone meats. My mom used to use a pressure cooker
for ham hocks and white beans dish. But ASA, you roast sounded good however you cooked it.
EVERYone, I hope you all understand that if i don't comment on some of your posts, it is not because I don't care about it, it's just because I have no pertinent response for it. I think we are all in agreement on that, right?
We actually had a nice lazy Sunday PM today. I watched some of the H of F game. Too bad to hear of Frank Gifford's passing tho. They said he would have been 85!!
May he rest in peace.

I get'cha on your comments comment, MDC, and I agree.
I've been enjoying watching Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. on Youtube with my Roku box. I started watching my dvds from the 4th season, and just went on from there. Except that I am kind of skipping around with seasons, as I have now gone backwards and am watching season 2.
It's funny to me how many people manage to get on that military base without anyone noticing. Just this season alone, Goober showed up at the barracks, as well as did Opie. Aunt Bee arrived on another season(season 4, actually. the one I have on dvd), but if I remember she got on the base legitimately, though she did find her way to the off-limits barracks just fine without anyone stopping her. That base must have the most lax security of any of them.
I also like it when people from Mayberry show up, like in the episodes I mentioned above. They are like old friends showing up in the new and unfamiliar surroundings that is Camp Henderson.
To be honest, the one I watched today where Opie runs away from home and shows up at the base made my eyes water a little.
I was particularly moved by Sgt. Carter showing his softer side to Opie after taking him back to the hotel when he had forced Gomer to take Opie to, then taking him back to the base anyway because he didn't want anything to happen to Opie all alone in that hotel.
I also liked when Sgt. Carter stood up for Opie after Andy, visibly perturbed by Opie's running away, arrived to get him. We got to hear some of Sgt. Carter's childhood background there, and a little before when he was teaching Opie how to be a Marine.
Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. is usually a pretty silly look at military life, with Gomer leading the way, but sometimes there are some real poignant moments, and this episode has some of those. A real "Mayberry-esq" episode.
In fact, Andy was gruffer than Sgt. Carter was in this episode. Of course, it was in color, and we all know the color Andy is gruffer than the black and white Andy. :-)

Well, I do declare! As much as I watched "Gomer Pyle" when it was being aired, and watched reruns, I have never, ever seen that episode! It was a dandy, too! Thanks, Sterling, for sharing that link.
It's late, and I'm heading for the ironing board, but just wanted to thank Sterling. Blessings, porch. Sleep well. --Romeena
