July 26, 2015 - Msg 102158: Oh no!
Did someone use one of those high-powered leaf blowers to sweep the porch?

Last time I checked yesterday, I was the last to post a comment. Hope it wasn't something I said. I did mention whether the mayo/miracle whip combo others were talking about might cause an explosion. Maybe even just talking about it caused a chemical reaction right on the porch. Wow, powerful stuff. ;-)

Thanks Floyd, and I hope you get it figured out.

July 26, 2015 - Msg 102159: Yes indeed, thanks for getting under their with all them spiders and fixing the porch. I was thinking the same thing Sterling. All was well until GF made his pasta salad using both Mayo and Miracle Whip. Then .... BLEWIE! :)
BTW, you and I are in the same camp in regards to onions. I like mine raw on my hamburgers. Never cared all that much for them grilled. Unless you are talking onion rings. I like them pretty fine.

So I am not sure how much we lost on the great porch crash of 2015, but just to be safe, Happy Birthdays again to Romeena, Possum, and Boo.

July 27, 2015 - Msg 102171: Well, my goodness! That's awful, a big chunk of the porch just vanishing, just like that! At least I know it wasn't anything I did, because I wasn't even here. I was in Austin, and then in Fredericksburg, came home yesterday evening. I just sat down here at my computer to catch up, and there's nothing to catch up with! It's gone!

Eloise and I went to Austin to see my grandson perform in "Hairspray" at the Zilker Theater there. He did a superb job as Link Larkin. The kid can sing, dance, and he can act. Eloise and I, thanks to my "grandmother of a co-star" status, had front-row seats, about ten feet from the footlights. Couldn't have been better. The staff treated me so nicely, I felt like Ms. Thang! David and Brittney and their boys were with us, we followed David driving down there, as I didn't want to be trying to navigate Austin at rush hour. He knows Austin well, and led us straight to our motel, and helped us get settled in, then led us to the theater. It's an outdoor venue, been in operation for over 50 years, and is an Austin tradition. It's situated on a hillside, and you can spread a blanket, or rent tiny, low chairs (less than 26"), and you can bring in coolers and snacks, or buy them there. Eloise and I had regular chairs, very comfortable, and our grandsons kept us supplied with water. Here's a link to the theater's website: http://zilker.org/castlist/ My grandson is Travis Gaudin, playing Link Larkin. The whole cast was very professional, very talented, and the show was just wonderful.

We stayed in Austin Thursday night, then went over to Fredericksburg on Friday. Both of my daughters live there, so we got to have a good visit. Dave and Brittney came home Saturday, but the boys stayed me and Eloise, and we came home Sunday. It was a long and busy weekend, but we really had fun. On Saturday, we took the boys and my youngest grandson (Heather's son) to Jellystone Park where they swam and played all the games the park provides, while we moms and grandmoms just sat in the shade and watched and visited. Life is good.

Toye Starr was able to stay with me in Austin, because we stayed in a LaQuinta, which accepts pets, but the LQ in Fredbg was full, so we stayed at a Fairfield Inn, w3hich does not. Therefore, she camped along with the grandsons at Heather's house. Heather has two medium-size dogs, Max and Teenie, each about 35-40 lbs, to Starr's 4.5 lbs. She holds her own though, and they defer to her. She thinks she has the bluff in, but I think in reality they know she's little and frail, and she's a female (they're both boys) and they just indulge her. It's so funny to watch. However, she spooked Edwin, Heather's husband. He was home alone with the dogs while we took the boys swimming, and kept hearing a soft, mournful sound, as he said "like a little lost soul." He couldn't figure out where it was coming from, but finally noticed Toye Starr by the front door. She would stand on her back tiptoes, peek over the kickplate on the door - no mama in sight. Walk in a circle twice, sit down, point nose to ceiling and emit a very soft, mournful little howl - woo-hoo-hoo! Rinse, repeat! All afternoon! He said it was just so sad! Poor little thing, she really is a mama's baby. At night, my grandson Landry got her on the bed with him and she settled down, didn't howl.

Well, I've rattled on for too long. It's good to be home. Blessings, all. --Romeena

Asa- nope no sunburn, but fun in the ocean. Also, flew to SB, so no road problems.
ALL--I was watching TAGS ep of the Cave Rescue on ME-TV tonite, and I think I found a little "blooper".
When Andy and Helen get to her house to clean up,
Helen picks up the phone to contact the sheriff's office to say they were OK before the special news bulletin came on. She told the person on the other end, who had to be Sarah, to ring the sheriff's office, but then puts the phone down; yet apparently, Sarah did not recognize Helen's voice (??)
because the next scene shows Gomer talking with Sarah about how no one came on the line.
Oh well, nothing earth-shattering.
Praying for all,

"Kumbaya, my Lord" was first recorded by an out-of-work English professor, Robert Winslow Gordon, in 1927. Gordon went on a search for black spirituals and recorded a song "Come by Here, My Lord", sung by H. Wylie. The song was sung in Gullah on the islands of South Carolina between Charleston and Beaufort...... It will protect you from any bad explosions and such.... July 29, 2015 - Msg 102194: Good evening, porch. It's hot, hot, hot! Eloise and I went to our favorite Chinese place today for lunch, then to Hobby Lobby so I could look for some supplies I need. Didn't find them. Tried Amazon, they didn't have what I want either. Guess maybe we'll run out to Michael's in far north Irving in the next day or two, and see if I do any better there. It's annoying when I know exactly what I want and can't find it. Oh well. I'll find it eventually.

I never knew that "Kumbaya" was from the Gullah dialect. I did know it meant "Come by here", but didn't realize it was Gullah. The Gullah dialect history is really interesting. You can find out a lot about it by just running a search on "Gullah dialect." Enough material there to keep a person reading for hours!

The project I'm working on is a birdbath bowl. My daughter and her husband found a concrete bowl out in the Texas panhandle somewhere, exactly what I've been hunting for about two years, and got it for me for my birthday. It's about two feet across, and is smooth inside, not wavy like most of them are. I want to line it with pretty glass, tiles and small stones. It has the shape of Texas in raised relief in the center, about an inch and a half high, with a big star engraved in the center of Texas. I'll paint that star a rich red, maybe or maybe not paint the top of the Texas map in white, and then cover the rest of the bowl with a mosaic of tiles and stones. The whole thing will be sealed with a waterproof sealer. I've got another small birdbath that sits among the shrubs below my window, just a regular little concrete thing, and I decorated it with mosaic stones a few years ago. It's pretty, and has held up well. The new bowl sits on top of a huge cedar stump beside the feeding stones. When I get it finished, I think it will be very pretty. It will be easy to wash out and keep clean, too.

Well, better go feed my little Toye Starr. She has come in here twice, touched my ankle with her paw, heaved a big sigh, and walked out again. That's her way of telling me she's hungry. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

July 29, 2015 - Msg 102195: Oh, Asa. I'm sorry to hear about your root canal. I've had two of those over the years - not fun. However, they usually feel better quickly, at least mine did. I've been so blessed. I've got a wonderful dentist, he has cared for my teeth for 36 years now, and I've got all of them but one. The last molar on the upper left is missing, but the rest are there. Several are crowned, but they're there. Not bad for 76, and I'm grateful. --Romeena

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFOnZAzjeoU
Hey RO and BOO...i have a a nursing question...
Do did the stripes on the nursing caps have any significance? (like in the military)
Emergency is showing early episodes right now
when the nurses still wore caps.
For ALL...regarding HD OTA antennas that had been discussed here recently... I mentioned that I had one from Radio Shack that had a
small remote for 'directional' tuning, but with all the talk recently about "50 mile" antennas, I went and ordered one from Amazon, then I went to
Radio Shack again and got a cable spliter adapter, and hooked them BOTH up to the antenna input jack!!! Now I get super-clear pictures with no more "pixelating." Also, for those of you with cable, you could attach both your cable AND an antenna to the input jack at the same time and get both!
Well, all for now,
MDC

July 31, 2015 - Msg 102206: Good evening, porch! Happy birthday to Possum and Boo! Hope it was a great one for you both. Possum, that picture is a real winner! Enjoy it.

MDC, yes, the stripes on a nurse's cap are significant. Only an RN can have a black stripe on their cap. Some nurses chose to wear their school cap, others (after graduation) chose to wear the universal cap - the one you typically see on TV shows and such. The majority wore the universal cap, because most school caps looked like the upstairs maid, or a cupcake holder. I know mind did! I wore my cap for about the first two years of my nursing career, then abandoned it. They're just too much trouble, always getting caught on something, and they're the very dickens to keep clean. I really don't think anyone wears them anymore. Kind of a shame, they looked very professional and neat, but they're not worth the trouble. I still have mine though, very carefully stored away.

I went to dinner with Dave and Brittney, and Eloise and Jerry. D&B gave me one more birthday present, even after all they did for us down in Fredericksburg. They gave me a copy of Harper Lee's book "Go Set A Watchman." I can hardly wait to read it. If it's even half as good as "To Kill A Mockingbird" it will be well worth reading.

Well, it's late and I'm tired. I think I'll call it a day. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

July 31, 2015 - Msg 102207: Nice, MDC! How many channels do you get?
I actually went to Best Buy a few days ago and found the same antenna that Poor Horatio said he bought. So I bought one myself. My brother came over and put it on the roof(he was a satellite tv installing for a while) and I only get like 10 channels, which is 2 less than I got with my DIY antenna that I made. But a couple of those channels were pixelated anyway so it didn't matter much, and the ones I have now are all pretty great and haven't "pixeled" ...yet. And I get both MeTV and Antenna TV, which both show classic tv shows, so I am happy about that.

I don't know why, but I got what I will call "the miseries" in my back, again. Just came on sudden, and I wasn't doing anything really different. Just picking Noah up and stuff. But maybe I twisted wrong or something. So I was trying to take it easy for most of the day.
I was doing so good too. Hadn't had hardly any back pain since my "major incident" that I had almost two years ago now. I did have a little something last year November that concerned me enough to call my physical therapist, but that went away pretty quick after she reminded me of one of the exercises I had forgotten. Hopefully this one will be short too. I get "afeared" that I am going to have another episode like the one I had that got me laid up in the hospital, and I want to avoid that at all costs. It was not fun.

Well, it's almost tomorrow, so maybe it is not too early to wish Boo a very Happy Birthday! Hope you get everything you want, if you haven't got it already.

Have a good night all.

-Sterling Holobyte

Happy Birthday, Boo! Check your FB page-somebody wants to wish you a Happy Birthday-ha ha (I get to tease YOU today!)

Don't forget the annual Possum & Boo Double Birthday Bash (That's PBDBB for short!) this weekend out at O'Malley's! I'll bring the cake-oh,y'all,do I have cake! How in the world I'll ever eat all of this cake (and cupcakes!) is beyond me! Wish I could mail everyone a "hunk" of cake, as Wally Cleaver used to say.

Well, gotta head to Wally World and I don't mean Wally's Gas Station. Hey, I just realized how many times I used "Wally" in my post today-probably just set some kind of new world record-ha!

Y'all have a great day-love to all!

July 31, 2015 - Msg 102211: First of all, happy birthday wishes to both Boo and possum. I hope you found joy in celebrating it.

possum, you mentioned Wally World. Well, the other day, I saw an ad on television for a new "Vacation" movie that includes Wally World.
Oh, and as for your PBDBB at O'Malley's, I'll bring along my mayonnaise, miracle whip, tartar sauce and sardines concoction to share with everyone.

Sterling Holobyte, if you are not happy with the OTA antenna that you purchased, why not return it if you saved the receipt and are within the returns allowed time frame from the place you bought it from?
I chose that OTA antenna not only based on the advertising data supplied by the manufacturer, but also the reviews supplied by customers. Expecting to receive additional stations that are within 25 miles of my home, I recently moved my OTA antenna from the main floor up to my attic. I was surprised that now, I am still not receiving three channels that I should be receiving. I need to perform a more detailed investigation.

July 31, 2015 - Msg 102212: No, I am happy with the antenna, Poor Horatio. Like I said, those two channels that I don't receive with this one but did on my homemade antenna would pixelate all the time anyway.
I also bought another Roku box for the downstairs tv. Now I just have to convince my wife that we should drop the tv portion of our cable bill, but keep the internet of course.

Well, I am still feeling pretty stiff and sore and my back was feeling kind of "shifted", so I made an appointment to see the doc today, luckily they have an opening. I want to at least get a refill on my medicines that I used before, and probably a referral so that I can go see my physical therapist again. Still hoping neither will be necessary, though. I just want the anti-spasmodic medicine to be on hand if I need it.

Happy birthday Boo and hope you had a grand one Possum. Sounds like it with that picture for sure.

Glad it's Friday. Only a 4 day week and it still seemed extry long. Dag blame old age!

My tooth feels pretty good though. I go back on Monday for the second part, whatever that is.

August 01, 2015 - Msg 102217: Asa, don't you be complaining about old age. You're just a sprout. Wait until you're 76, and then tell me about it. I declare, I know now what my daddy was talking about, when he said all his favorite parts either hurt, sagged, fell off, or leaked! If I've been sitting for more than five minutes, standing up is not easy, and once I do, I have to wait for everything to settle into place before I take a step. I have to stabilize before I mobilize. But hey! I'm still here, and that's something, and I'm grateful.

I've been watching the documentary series about the auditions and training camp for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Mercy! Those girls are beautiful, mobile, energetic, talented, and a little bit nuts. That's a tremendous commitment, and it's not easy. Really interesting, to watch what all goes into those routines that they make look so easy. Also, I really felt sorry for one girl. Pretty, sweet, young and talented but she got cut. Why? Because at one time, much younger, she had taken a revealing picture of herself and sent it to her boyfriend. As she said, she was young and stupid. The boyfriend, the louse, put it on social media. Yep, that's a guy you'd want to marry, right? One that would post a compromising picture of you for all to see? Anyway, the Cheerleader "mamas" found it, and they cut the girl from the squad. Apparently, they insist on wholesome, clean behavior and no exceptions. The poor girl cried, but she understood, apologized to the leadership, and blamed no one but herself.

I worry about all that social media stuff. I've learned things on Facebook about a couple of people I know, that I wish I hadn't seen. Anyone who thinks the "privacy" settings protect them is living in a dream world. You may choose who sees what you post, but out of your choices, someone may decide to just re-post or however they do it, and your information is out there. I know of a nurse who lost his job because of a negative comment he made on Facebook regarding our hospital, and someone in the nursing office saw it. He said he only posted it to his list, but it escaped the list somehow. Scary.

Well, I think I'll toddle off to the ironing board. It's been a long day. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

August 01, 2015 - Msg 102218: STERLing--what exercise are you talking about for your back? I have misery there too, and would be interested in that exercise. THX.
Poor Horatio and STERLING, why dont you try my idea? I could only find an adapter with three female (sorry ladies, that's what they call jacks, plumbing connectors, etc...M and F) coax jacks, so I also had to get a male/female short cable to make it all work. As PH said, if it doesnt help, you can return them! SH--I get 55 channels from around the PHX area, tho 15 are in Espanol. I also get Antenna TV and ME-TV with the antennas, plus 2 all-weather channels, the 4 major networks, and a few that are affiliated, but show a different variety of programs.
BOO!!! So glad to see you on the porch.
Possum's party for y'all was great!
Good to hear that Erin and Sean are doing OK.
Did you ever get grass planted??
RO--thanks for the capping info. Dix wears a cap with TWO black stripes, so I guess she's an extra special RN. ha
God's blessings,
MDC

August 01, 2015 - Msg 102219: 55 channels, MDC? Wow! I am not sure even having two antennas(is that what you are talking about?) would help me out though. I don't live anywhere near any big cities, and I am already going out 50 miles just to get the channels I do receive.
I am wondering if an amplifier would help, maybe pick up a couple more.

MDC, I found a video which depicts some of the same exercises I was told to do that helped me: https://youtu.be/HoNW3TnAT3Y Particularly positions 2 and 3. In this video he seems to just be holding them, but there are some instructions for doing repetitions written later in the video, and that is how my PT had me do them, about 10 repetitions at a time.
You can also do these standing up with hands on your hips and just bending back. That was the one that I mentioned I had forgotten about before and it helped alleviate a good amount of my pain.
I don't know where your pain is, but mine was mostly on my left lower back(when I talked about feeling "shifted", like I couldn't stand up totally straight), and because of that, I also did an exercise where you stand straight with hands on hips, and kind of slide your hips to the right, again for a count of about 10. I know, it looks kind of silly, but that is why I am glad I was in a room with no windows when my PT was having me do those. The intention of this exercise was to get the "jelly" that's in between your discs back in position, since the stuff was bulging out from the disc. That was for me. Like I said, I don't know where your pain is emanating from, and you would probably need a dr to tell you, if they haven't already.
There are more exercises I was taught to help strengthen the core muscles around the spine, and if you need those I will try to find some more videos or pics to explain them because it is hard to picture how to do them exactly though words.
But if you are just looking for some pain relief for your lower back, I would think the ones in the video, along with the back stretches, might help.
Hope that helps you out.

August 01, 2015 - Msg 102222: Great to see you back Auh2o.. Don't be a stranger, we have to get the heavy duty Pledge out to dust off your rocker...

August 01, 2015 - Msg 102223: Auh2o, great to see you! Your rocker is ALWAYS here for you. Mine was getting a bit dusty too. But no problem, just brushed it off and it was ready to sit in.

Waiting for the family to get back from their day trip to Chicago. ...And waiting to see how much money my wife decided to spend. Oh boy.
Still nursing my back. I had hoped it would be all better today since it was feeling a bit better yesterday after the dr visit and taking some pain medicine, but I guess I have to give it a little more time.

Talk to you all later. Have a great night!

August 02, 2015 - Msg 102224: Good Sabbath porch.

Good to see you indeed auH2o. And certainly your rocker is ri-cheer. I sprayed some WD-40 on it to get rid of the squeaks. I wish that stuff would work on me to get rid of my squeaks. I hope all is well with you.

I saw the video link you provided for us GF. Looks like you all had a grand time. You sure are a nice feller. I saw our Possum also.

Thanks for the 3 Stooges clip PH. Makes my dentist look pretty good. Actually my Dentist is a good one also. Been going to him for 30 years now. We used to play basketball against each other in a Church ball league. He knows I'm a big TAGS fan, and enjoys the show himself.

Hope your back eases up Sterling, and your Wife didn't spend to much money. Maybe the two are related. Got you tensed up. :) I do a lot od back exercises that seem to help me out. That S.I. joint they talk about is what my Doc. says I have issues with. He also calls it a rotated pelvis or even dislocated pelvis. Call it what you will, I call it a pain when it goes south on me. I hope yours eases up soon.

Guess I better go hit the shower before preaching. Seems like the right thing to do.

Prayers for all.

Asa
