June 25, 2015 - Msg 101755: Good morning, porch! It's a beautiful, clear, and very hot day here in Texas. It's already 90°, and rising. Tomorrow is supposed to be clear and hot as well, but rain over the weekend, and that pattern repeats, with rain about every three days, for the next couple of weeks. Not a bad deal!

Oh my, yes. I do miss REV. I count it as one of the privileges of my life, that I was able to meet him, and forge a friendship. He came to my church five times, every October for a while, and did a concert. After the first one, he would plan an extra day or two in the area, and would spend it with my family. I think he was tired, and took the opportunity to just kick back for a day or so. He's the same age as my oldest son. It's just so hard to accept that he won't be coming through here anymore. I guess it was the TAGS connection, but we had a great friendship. I felt like I'd known him all my life - he was just that kind of guy. What you saw was what you got. No ego, no pretense, just a genuinely nice guy, a true southern gentleman. My grandkids loved him, and Toye Starr did too. That says a lot. He spoke of his faith often, not preachy, just part of conversation, and he lived it as well. I'm looking forward to some good times visiting with him in Heaven.

Well, guess I'd better get dressed. Today is Thursday, so Eddie will probably be here to mow, and I'm sitting here in front of this window in a ratty old gown! He'll come moseying into the back yard to check it out in a minute. Toye Starr woofed a minute ago, so I imagine she heard Eddie's truck on the driveway.

For any newcomers, allow me to give you a little information about our REV who passed away in October of 2013. Not only was he a christian minister (a bishop in fact), he also was a very talented country musician, singer and composer. He was able to combine those talents by traveling through many parts of the USA in his motorhome as he spread the word about Jesus. He was a pleasure to listen to because he included real life stories and sang country music songs that he wrote. To view a sample, just go to YouTube and search for "rocky morris".

June 25, 2015 - Msg 101761: You're so right, PH. He was all that and more. He was a good friend as well. As I said, it was my joy to have him in my home at least once, usually twice or three times whenever he had a concert here, and you know what? He never seemed like a guest. He just seemed like family. Some people just have that quality, that ability to make you feel like you've known them forever. He'd go outside and help David with the grill, or entertain the grandsons. Once he sliced the tomatoes for the burgers we were making, and he repaired a broken low-voltage light fixture for me. Family things.

I think he got a little bored on some of the long drives, because he would call me from the road now and then, just to visit. I'm sure he did that with a lot of people he met in his travels, because he made friends everywhere he went, but I always cherished those little visits. He was a very special person, and he's missed.

I still pray for his wife and daughter and SIL, and the little grandbaby he never got to see. That has to be so hard for Erica. She was so close to her dad, and he was so excited about the idea of having grandchildren. I guess there are just some things we're not meant to understand, and I trust God's wisdom and plan, but that doesn't keep me from wondering why, at times. As for his wife, Nancy, I have prayed for her so much. I've been there, with a sudden loss of the person I loved most in this world, and it hurts. I hope she's finding her way out of the pain by now.

Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Ive been watching a lot of TAGS reruns lately and enjoying it. I took a break ffrom them for almost a year and now it is great watching them again. I even like to watch most of the color eps now. I thought of you yesterday, Ro. The episode about Aunt Bee keeping the baby was on. It is such a ridiculous episode, as you have stated in the past. Seems way out of character for Aunt Bee.

June 25, 2015 - Msg 101763: Good to hear from you, Boo. Sounds like your plate is pretty full these days. I can't imagine what it would be like to go back to work now, after being off these past two years. I stay pretty busy, can't imagine how I had time to work! Of course, being almost 76 makes a difference too. I don't have the energy or the stamina I used to have. I can remember doing double shifts (16 hours), going home for the span of one shift and getting maybe five hours sleep, and returning to do another double. I can't believe I ever did that, but I did. Made darned good money, too!

All I do now is the occasional home health visit, and having to work at not grumbling about having to do that. Fact is, I'd much rather be sitting here by this window, watching the antics of the critters out back. The squirrels are endlessly entertaining.

My pest-control friend, Johnny, came the other day and set four traps for that miserable rat in my garage, and so far, he has stolen the bait from one, ignored the others, and not been caught. I think he's SuperRat. Got to catch that thing, I don't like living with a rat around, even if he is just in the garage (so far). I'm sure we could get him, if I'd allow poison to be used, but I just can't. I hate poisons. It's a terrible death, even for a rat, and if he dies outside and somebody's cat eats him, then the cat can be poisoned as well. Nope, can't do it. Guess we'll keep on trying with the traps.

Well, have a good evening, everyone. --Romeena

June 26, 2015 - Msg 101766: Good Friday morning all.

Oh yes GF. I well remember Ed Roth. Garlits, Prudhome, all them fellers. In fact one of my buddies growing up got into drag racing in a big way. After running several different cars in various sportsman classes, he got into his first top fuel dragster in the mid 70's. He actually did quite well for a few years. He also ran a AA/FC for a year or two. I went to a number of races with him over the years, including the Winternationals a couple of times. Good times for sure.

Good to see you Boo. I hope your are all well.

MDC, your talk of being so hot that dogs chasing cats at a walk cracked me up. The folks across the street from me have a golden lab and a black lab. Everytime I am out front, they come running over to the fence waiting for me to pet them. That is until it gets real hot like it is now. If they see me, they will bark a bit, but not run to the fence, unless I walk over to them. They just don't want to spend the energy to come out of the shade unless they know I am serious. Funny pups for sure.

Ro, I am so glad you got to meet The Rev. and spend time with him the way you did. I, like you, often think of his family and pray they are well. I remember how challenging it was for him when his Daughter married. Being the Father of two Daughters, I could appreciate his concerns. One of the more challenging things a Father has to do, see his precious Daughters grow up and get married. Them fellers just never meet our expectations, do they guys? lol

Well better get moving. Hot and getting hotter.

Prayers for all.

It was very competitive in the 70's, but is old school now, although it hit 330 mph several times and broke under the 6 second time a number of times. Not many were doing that in the mid 70's. June 26, 2015 - Msg 101777: Good Afternoon Porch,

It's going to be another scorcher today, but at least tomorrow it will be out of the 90's, so yay! I always go to the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings then the library. It's been very warm the last few weeks, but tomorrow morning should be nice. I have been swimming in the mornings before my husband takes the car for the day (I have to drive up to the pool in the complex because of my ankle, boo). I love going in without people in there to get my laps in. Today I did jumping jacks with relatively little pain on my stomach and ankle. Then I lay out just enough to dry off. I'm gone about an hour and I'm turning into a butterball.

Last night I watched Miss Peggy's last episode. I love her Georgian accent (wonder why ;). I felt bad for Opie wanting it to be just he and Andy. I'm sure most children feel that way if one or more of their parents is deceased or divorced. I love Barney, but sometimes it's nice when it's just the Taylor's and their family dynamics.

I think today, of all days, we need TAGS and what it brings/means.

Y'all have a good rest of the day! I really need to start making calls for Bryan. I've spent today on Twitter and little on Facebook, after my swim. Completely unproductive.

June 27, 2015 - Msg 101780:
Romeena, I have thought of another method that might get rid of your rat. First, open the garage door. Then from the opposite end, start moving things around. Hopefully, that might scare him into running out through the opened door. But you have to be careful that you don't stick your hands or fingers into anything dark or out of view to prevent from getting bitten. Be sure to wear thick gloves. You should also have someone watching the garage door opening so that if he does run out and you miss it, you can be notified that he ran out.
If this trick don't work, maybe he prefers your garage because it is a food source. So you might have to stop baiting the traps for a few days beforehand.

Frank Myers, others have mentioned that old postings that no longer appear on this page get archived. Below is a step-by-step process of how to view those archives.
At the bottom of this page, right below the COMMENTS box, you will see an Archives link. Click on that link.
You will be directed to a new page with columns and a whole bunch of dated links. You will have to scroll down the page to see them all.
Each column contains the archived messages for the year at the top of that column. Listed vertically in each column are all the archived pages for that year. At the bottom of the 2015 column, look for the 2015_06_24_101742 link.
The 2015 represents the year of all the messages at that link. The 06 represents the month (June) of the last message at that link.
The 24 represents the day of the month for the last message at that link.
As for the 101742, this might be a little confusing. It represents the number for the first message that will appear at the beginning of the next archive. In other words, the final message of that archived page is actually one less, or 101742 - 1 = 101741. So Msg 101741 will appear as the last posting in the 2015_06_24_101742 link.
Click on the 2015_06_24_101742 link to open that archived page.
To search for a particular message, press CTRL + f to open up a search window. By this, I mean hold the CTRL key down, then press the F key, then release both keys. This will open a search window. In that search window, type any keyword, or person's username, that was used in the message you are looking for. If the search finds multiple occurrences, just keep pressing ENTER until you find the message you are looking for. Watch the vertical scroll bar on the right side of your screen. While doing this kind of search, when it reaches the last occurrence on that page, it will repeat the cycle and go back to the first occurrence as you press the ENTER key.
Although these instructions may be long, I wanted to make them detailed enough to prevent any misunderstanding. If you have any questions, just ask.

I've been on this porch a lot of years, going back through the other two incarnations of the porch, and I knew how to use the archives, including searching them, but to be honest, I didn't know the part about pressing ENTER repeatedly to advance in that search. Pretty handy!

It's a beautiful day here, after a HUGE rainstorm last night. Honestly, it looked like someone had just started pouring water out of buckets! I had dozed off in my chair and didn't even know it was raining until a big thunderclap and Toye Starr's barking at it woke me. I came in here to my window, and even though it was still fairly light outside, I could barely see my back fence, the rain was so heavy! It's sunny today, and everything is so fresh and green. Eddie mowed yesterday, doing his usual very nice job, and then the rain - the yard is so pretty today.

My white plumeria is thriving, has numerous clumps of flowers on it and looks so nice. The pink one, the one that was about nine feet tall, is almost destroyed, thanks to that miserable rat, who still reigns supreme in the garage. During the winter, he ATE that plant, which was stored in the garage. It was so pretty, now it has one lonely tall branch, and a couple of little short ones. It has leafed out, exactly two clumps of leaves. Looks awful. I think I'm going to just prune it down to about three feet overall, and see what happens.

PH, I have plans for cleaning out the garage. There's no way I can do it myself, must have help. My son left on a mission trip to Wales last night, will be gone about ten days. When he gets home, he and the boys will be coming over and the garage will be emptied completely, swept and washed down. Maybe in that process, we'll solve the problem.

Well, guess I'll go rustle up some lunch. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

June 27, 2015 - Msg 101790: Thank you porch friends for the information regarding the mcCoys. I did match it up with Frank Myers the production manager and the characters name. That was nice of them. Seems like the cast had respect for Frank Myers work behind the scenes. I have been hooked on the McCoys for a few months now. I catch it at 3:30 a.m. on Cozi TV here. Also there are many episodes on YouTube. I have seen some familiar faces on the show. Miss Jane, Mayor Pike. Floyd. John Masters. Aunt Harriet. To name a few. Walter Brennan is a smart hillbilly and most of the time at the end of each episode he is sorry and embarrasd for what he has done by Kate and Luke and some of the other members of the family and ends up feeling guilty for his actions. I like the way the show is written. They made many episodes and now they are recognized for their work by a few more generations thanks to Cozi TV. And YouTube. They need to have better air time on Cozi TV though. Its clean. I like it. A show from much more family oriented times. Have a good weekend. Anyone for checkers or horseshoes? Frank Myers.

Cable companies and satellite companies. Now I watch more OTA. A much better value. Besides, its free. And you know me. I have to make my mortgage payments on time. Frank Myers

June 27, 2015 - Msg 101795:
Frank Myers, just like Lydia Crosswaithe from TAGS, I'm not a big fan of idle chit-chat. But I do love to perform research on the internet.
Speaking of television broadcasting, I also have an HD (High Definition) antenna connected to my television so that I can receive OTA (Over The Air) as a backup to the cable television service.
My favorite OTA channel is Buzzr which is a brand new channel owned by Fox Television. On Buzzr, I enjoy watching the old black and white versions of To Tell The Truth, What’s My Line?, and I’ve Got A Secret. Unfortunately, they air between 2am and 4am so I have to either go to bed earlier or split my sleeping time.

June 27, 2015 - Msg 101796: Thanks PH. Buzzr. I have to research that. Sounds like another channel right up my alley. Thanks, Frank Myers

June 27, 2015 - Msg 101797:
Frank Myers, after posting my last message, I decided to give Buzzr a try in the daytime. This afternoon and evening, they aired episodes of Let's Make A Deal. This included not only the episodes most people are familiar with where a select group of audience members dress up in homemade costumes with props and signs, but they also aired a few episodes from 1963 (the first season) where all audience members dressed in normal suits and dresses, and the cash prizes were relatively small. In between segments of the show, they included short interviews with the retired Monty Hall (the original host of the show), and Wayne Brady (the current host of this revived show).

June 28, 2015 - Msg 101798: PH, I am watching that also. I never knew the audience appeared in street clothes. Or in those days fancy go to meeting clothes. I apologize to the regular porchers for maybe discussing something different. I have not read much today from the regular posters. Frank Myers

June 28, 2015 - Msg 101799: Good late evening, porch! Frank Myers, don't apologize, there's no need. You got something on your mind, boy, you just spit it out! Besides, I'm right there with you on the programming on TV. It's pitiful, on just about every station. I left my cable company years ago and went with Dish Network, for the sole reason that they carried TVLand and my cable company did not, and said they never would. Six weeks after I made the switch, the cable company acquired TVLand! Now, it wouldn't matter, because TVLand has the sorriest lineup of all the stations. They have run "Roseanne" into the ground. My choices these days are Hallmark, NatGeo, HGTV, and once in a while, a news channel. We don't get anything that shows a good selection of oldies. You'd think that in a metroplex like Dallas/Ft. Worth, we'd get everything, but we don't. At least Dish Network doesn't offer them. I don't think the cable network does either. Eloise has that, and her opinion of TV is about the same as mine. Mostly garbage.

I recorded all the "Barney Miller" eps a while back, and often turn to them and replay them. That was a very good show, great cast and excellent, imaginative writing. Then of course, I have my complete set of TAGS DVDs.

Well, off to bed. Got to get up earlier than usual in the morning. We're having a church-wide potluck tomorrow after services. The church is providing the meat, and the members will bring the sides. Visitors don't bring anything, of course. I'm going to make some decadent mac and cheese, primarily because I had all the necessary stuff to make it, so didn't have to go to the store. I'll time it to come out of the oven just before I leave for church, and I'll leave it in the car. It will hit 90° by noon, so the car will heat up to about 120°, and that's warm enough for a mac and cheese casserole! Hahaha!

Blessings, friends. --Romeena

June 28, 2015 - Msg 101802: Good morning and a happy Sunday to all!

I wanted to tell Poor Horatio that all of those old episodes of "What's My Line" can be found on YouTube. I enjoy the old classic games shows as well, and have been watching "What's My Line" on YT for some time now.

Just a thought-with YouTube you can view them at your leisure and not at 2-4 in the morning!

Make mine well done,Spotty! Peace back at ya!

June 28, 2015 - Msg 101804: Good morning, porch. Obviously, I didn't make it to preachin' this morning, and our choir was doing their patriotic presentation too. Sure hated to miss it. Toye Starr has been sick, hasn't eaten a bite since Friday night. Her little belly growls and squeaks, and she's been so restless. Just fidgety, doesn't stay in one place more than about 15-20 seconds, then she flinches and changes her position. I know she's having belly cramps. I haven't taken her to the vet, because her own vet closed at noon yesterday, just about the time I realized she was not feeling well. I hate taking her to one of those emergency vets. She's done this before, and usually wears it out n about 24 hours, but this has hung on.

Then when my clock went off at 7 this morning, and I tried to get up, my back muscles seized up, and I could hardly get around. I was definitely walking crooked! So, she and I just tucked back in and went back to sleep. I hadn't slept but about two hours anyway, what with her fidgeting and walking across me every few seconds. We woke up about 11, and my back had released. She seems to feel a bit better. We'll go to the kitchen in a minute and see if she'll eat. Poor little thing, I hate when she's sick. I don't like for her to miss meals, either. At just 4 1/2 lbs, she can't afford to lose weight. She has, too. When I picked her up to help her off the bed, she felt like a little bird. Just a little old wisp of a puppy! Mercy, I love that little girl! I can't believe she's about to be eight years old.

Guess I'd better get dressed. Brittney is dropping Bentley off right after noon. David is in Wales on a mission trip, the boys are at Pine Cove summer camp, and she's headed for Conroe to attend a four-day photography class/workshop. She's getting more serious about building a photography business. She should, she's very good.

Well, off I go. Later, taters. --Romeena

June 28, 2015 - Msg 101805: Oh, Spot. About those ribeyes - throw one on the grill for me, please, but don't leave it there too long. In this Texas gal's opinion, a well-done steak is a total waste of good beef. I like mine medium-rare, with the emphasis on the rare. I don't care if the center is cool. I think I've told y'all this before, but my dad used to say he had seen cows get well that were hurt worse than my steak was. Dale said a good vet and some antibiotics might be able to save my steak! Weasel. --Romeena

June 28, 2015 - Msg 101806: Well, Toye Starr is feeling much better. She drank a LOT of water this morning, after nothing since Friday night. Then she ate about 1/4 cup of her kibble, and an egg-sized scoop of her Beneful wet food. That's about as much as she ever eats, so I knew she was feeling better. Also, her little plumey tail is up and waving, instead of dragging down low. Bentley arrived a couple of hours ago, and they've been playing ever since, so I know she's feeling okay.

Poor Bentley! He has a "bracelet" shaved around one front leg, where he had an IV a couple of days ago. He had three small skin tumors removed, so he has three shaved patches. Looks pretty funny on a big old fluffy dog. The tumors were benign, just those old-dog things that some breeds seem to form. They're not related to the cancer he had last year. It's been almost fourteen months now, and the vet said we would be lucky if he lived four months. Just shows what prayer can do, I guess, because lots of people prayed for that sweet dog, and many of us still do. Some of you did too, and I thank you.

Wish you could meet Bentley. He's one in a million. Just a sweet, lovable old mophead, not a mean bone in his body. However, when that man opened the door and walked in on Brittney that day, Bentley saved her. He rushed him, snarling like a bear. The man kicked him aside, and Bentley scrambled up and started after him again. At that point, the man left. Brittney could have been murdered that day, if not for Bentley. He's our hero.

Well, just wanted you to know little Starr-baby is okay. Blessings. --Romeena

Romeena, so sad to read about Toye Starr's health issue. Maybe the following links might help:

and

That last article is quite lengthy. Try searching (CTRL + F) for the word RESTLESS to locate specific conditions. And don't forget to press that ENTER key to advance through the multiple occurrences.

June 28, 2015 - Msg 101808: ROMEEna--Sometimes, per our vet, we give our cat 1/4 of a tablet of Pepcid AC when she doesnt want to eat. You may want to ask your vet about that.
I have been seeing this on FB lately about the night sky on June 30. Could be very interesting to observe... http://tinyurl.com/nbp6c6b
For those of you on cable, you could also split your signal with OTA by buying a cheap signal spliter and a small OTR antenna. I can get 55 free channels here, but admit that about 15 are en espanol, but I have never paid for TV.
Well, GOOD SABBATH to all!
