May 19, 2015 - Msg 101393: Uh...the rooster song was kinda creepy..just sayin'. ;)

Sounds like you had a great weekend, Ro. Congratulations on a graduating grandson. How proud you must be. How does Brittany make her chicken and rice? Maybe I will send her a message and ask for the recipe. I have a simple recipe for it but I am wondering if it is the sameone she makes.

We might get more rain here today and a thunderstorm, but hopefully nothing worse. Ro, did you watch the news concerning the big biker brawl in Waco? Crazy!

Not much else to report since I was last here. Been on my usual three day stretch at work and holding down the fort here at home.

Maude, cant believe Beth is 21! They have all grown up so fast...too fast.

May 19, 2015 - Msg 101394: Good morning, porch! Cloudy and a bit windy here today, but comfortable at 74°. Small chance of rain, with the chances increasing as the week progresses. I'm glad we're getting a few days with no rain, to give what's already in the ground a chance to soak deeper and let the surface dry a little. Rain that falls right now just goes to runoff and causes flooding. Most of our lakes are full and over the spillways, and the creeks and rivers that feed them are full, so any more rain just goes to flood. I'm not complaining, I'm deeply grateful for the breaking of our years-long drought, but a little break now so we can keep what falls later is also appreciated. You know, the Bible says "the rain falls on the just and on the unjust." I can't help wondering which of those we are.

Yep, Boo, I saw that big mess in Waco. From what the news said, it was not local people, it was three or four biker gangs from around the country, converging on Waco as a meeting ground, to discuss "turf boundaries and other issues." You can Google "Waco biker brawl" and find several very good, comprehensive articles about it.

What a mess! How stupid and immature can people be? These are adults, not dumb kids fighting over "ownership" of a street corner. Apparently they don't have jobs, since they seem to be free to roam the country. I suppose they live on the proceeds from theft, drug dealing, and welfare. Can you imagine living a life that's so empty that you'll run all over the country, deliberately getting into a brawl that costs lives, just to make sure everyone understands that an area is "your turf"? People like that are a blight on humanity, and they make it hard for decent folks who happen to enjoy motorcycles. For cryin' out loud, my pastor and our music minister ride Harleys, and like to get out on the highway with some friends now and then and just enjoy the ride. I suppose some people, seeing them, would think they're thugs! Of course they're not dressed in the headrags and club jackets, but most people don't make that distinction.

As for Brittney's chicken and rice, there really isn't a recipe. It's just chicken legs seasoned with lemon pepper and broiled, and the rice is actually Rice-a-roni. Couldn't be simpler, but she has a knack for cooking the chicken just right. It's fully done, no pink, but it's never dry. I tend to cook it too long and dry it out. I like rare beef, but not rare chicken! I don't know how she does it, but hers is just better than mine. Her rice is always good too, because she adds some of the drippings from the chicken to it just as it finishes cooking. I do that also - doesn't hurt it a bit!

Well, guess I'll go hunt up some late breakfast or early lunch. Going to the Deacon's fish fry at church tonight - they continue to invite the widows of deacons who have passed, even send a deacon to pick us up! Very thoughtful, I think. I didn't go the first few years, but I do now.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 19, 2015 - Msg 101395: Speaking of my pastor, I'd like to ask for your prayers for him. He had surgery yesterday morning for kidney cancer, very recently discovered. They removed about two-thirds of his kidney. The doctor said the remainder will continue to function, and best news of all, he is very confident that he got all of the cancer. Knowing Bro. Ken, he will have a very upbeat attitude about it all, and will be back in the pulpit as soon as the doctor will allow it. He's one of the good guys, and I'd really appreciate your prayers for his full recovery, cancer-free! Thanks! --Romeena

May 20, 2015 - Msg 101398: More tough weather in Texas, you girls Ok?......G-F

May 20, 2015 - Msg 101399: Good morning, porch! Skies are partly clear this morning, but clouding up rapidly. More rain is probable for today. Yesterday, right after I wrote about the little respite from the rain we were getting, the heavens opened and we got a "frog-strangler" that lasted about fifteen minutes. It had my pumps running, making a little geyser out at the street, carrying away the excess. Now it looks like it's going to do it again today.

In defense of Waco, please - everyone be aware that the people who caused and participated in that battle there were not locals. They were representatives from about four or five national motorcycle gangs - they just chose Waco as a meeting point. The police had heard rumors, and were prepared, otherwise it would have been much worse. They have over a hundred of them in jail, at $1 million bail each. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. One thing I'd bet on - they won't go to Waco again. The local police are strong, and if necessary, they'll call in the Texas Rangers. You do NOT want to mess with them!

Well, gotta run. This morning is our last class with our Internationals, for the summer. I'll teach my class from 9:30 to 10:30, then we'll have our usual all-together gathering until 11:00, and then we're serving them hamburgers and the trimmings. After that, it's over - until school starts again. We follow the city school schedule. It will be good to have the summer free of it. I enjoy it, and will probably teach again next fall, but a couple of months without that obligation will be nice. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 21, 2015 - Msg 101406: OK, G-F. Any news? You do know that your secret is no secret, but I think you intended it to be that way, considering all those broad hints. What fun!!!

The back yard is like Grand Central Station this morning, At the moment, there are five doves, three sparrows, a blue jay, and a couple of finches on the flat stones beneath the hanging feeder, cleaning up what the squirrels have dropped. There's a woodp#cker chowing on the suet feeder, and Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal are on the other feeder, happily enjoying the sunflower seeds. A pair of black-capped chickadees just left that feeder, but they'll be back. In the midst of it all, there are five squirrels - a couple at the feeder, one up in a tree with a chunk of dry bread which he's claimed as his own, one checking out a nest box, and another climbing one of the crape myrtles, just nosing around. I can't possibly express the joy I find at this window. I guess most people put picture windows on the front of their homes, but what's to see out there? With this one on the back, I have a window on the world! And what a happy, lovely little world it is. I get to observe the circle of life out there, and all the little events that come with it. Fortunately, the one part that I'd just as soon not see, the end of life, is rarely seen. Nature has a way of being very discreet in that area. I get to see the little birds as they fledge and learn to fly, and the baby squirrels when they first emerge from their nests, terrified to climb on the tree until mama forces them to do so, and I see all the little courtships, both feathered and furry, but rarely, very rarely, do I witness the end of a life. Honestly, I wouldn't take a dollar and a quarter for this window!

Well, better go feed my little "indoor" critter. She has hinted several times that I've been at this keyboard long enough. Little does she know that I plan to do some writing this afternoon. She hates that.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

MDC, living in Canada, I did not realize that this weekend is Memorial Day in the states. I thought it was next weekend. That video of the playing of taps was very touching. Thanks for posting it during this Memorial Day weekend.

Whenever I see a photograph of any military personnel who has sacrificed his/her life in the service of their country, I can't help but wonder that had they lived, how much of a positive affect they could have had on our society.
Memorial Day was set aside to honor all military who died in the service of their country. Veterans Day is where we honor all who served, both the living and the dead.
Civilians will celebrate this long weekend with such activities as traveling, watching a parade, going to the beach, boating, picnics and fireworks. But let us not forget to pay tribute to all military personnel who sacrificed their lives to provide freedom for us and others. Fly a flag, visit a cemetery, or just say a prayer.
As veteran of the US Navy and US Army, I salute my fellow comrades in arms who are no longer with us. Right hand salute.

May 24, 2015 - Msg 101432: Amen indeed. I cannot hear TAPS played without tears flowing. I realize it wasn't written as we hear it today, it actually was excerpted from "Il Silenzio", which will also bring tears. However, TAPS has been accepted as the loving tribute to a fallen soldier, and it will always bring me to tears. Right in line behind it is "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes, and "Going Home" on the pipes as well. Both beautiful, and so emotional.

God bless all the fallen heroes from America, and the rest of the free world. Evil is closing in on us, but we must stand strong and resist. At some point, I still believe free men and women will rise up and draw a line in the sand, and tell the forces of evil - "This far, and no farther. Stand down." --Romeena

MDC, I loved watching your "Here's To The Heroes" video. To see all the American graves buried on foreign soil accompanied by that beautiful song got me choked up. I tallied the totals and came up with 130,531 American war dead and 92,827 missing in action. Among them are someone's fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters. The war separated them from their families and now in death, they remain separated from their families by being buried in a foreign land. At least they lie alongside their comrades.

Searching the internet, I discovered some interesting facts.
- There are 25 permanent American military cemeteries located in 16 foreign countries.
- For the 8301 Americans buried at the Netherlands American cemetery, Dutch citizens have adopted every grave. On the American Memorial Day weekend, it is not uncommon for 30,000 Dutch to visit these American graves. And approximately 600,000 people visit this cemetery each year. In fact, the adopt-a-grave program is so popular among the grateful Dutch that there is a two year waiting list.

G-F. that's one lucky little grandkid. I think you and Asa would be about the best grandpas a child could ask for. Kind, loving, committed, and lots of fun too!

Yes, we've had some "interesting" weather lately. I'm safe, no damage here. On Saturday night, about 2:30 in the morning, I had gone to bed but was watching TV, when I realized there was a siren sounding, and it didn't match up with the program I was watching. I muted the TV and the siren continued, so I knew it was the city's warning siren. I switched to a weather channel and learned we were under a tornado warning! I took Toye Starr and went into the living room, which is the central room in this house, and watched the TV in there. The tornado warning only lasted about ten minutes, then they lifted it. A small one did touch down north of here, but did little damage. So, back to bed, and slept well. We did get a LOT of rain that night, though.

Much of the area far south of here is flooded. My grandson (the one that just graduated) had dropped his brother off in Austin and was headed home to San Marcos when he encountered a flooded area over the road he was on. Some cars were venturing into it, but he chose the better part of valor and turned around, went back to Austin. A little later, several cars were swept off that road. Some witnesses described a "wall of water" about ten feet high that swept through the area.

A 14-year old boy was drowned in DeSoto, a Dallas suburb. He had told a friend that he was curious about the storm drains and pipe culverts, and took off with his two dogs to "go see them." A little later, one of his dogs came home alone, which prompted a search, and he and his other dog were found in one of those pipe culverts, drowned. Investigators think he had tried to ride the flow of the water through it, but didn't realize there was a clog of branches and debris toward the end of the pipe. He couldn't get past it, and the flow of the water was too strong for him to crawl back against it. Police are still investigating, but so far, that's the story. So sad.

Well, better get moving. This house looks like some kind of nest. I need to de-clutter and clean a bit. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

from drought to flash floods. Very scary, but keep the faith thru it all.
BOO told me on facebook that she and fam are OK.
Sterling--good to see you. Does life have you down my friend?
Let us know.
Hang in there all.

May 27, 2015 - Msg 101457: Happy Wednesday porch. hope everyone is good today.its a warm sunny day on my end of the porch.

We are in bad need of rain here in Northeast Tennessee. lawns, gardens, lakes are all drying up and the Holston River that runs through here is way down.

had memorial day off but back to work yesterday and the rest of the week. Patrick started his summer job, working for Ole Smokey Lawn and Landscaping. He will work until mid August and then head back to Cookeville for his last year of grand school. It will probably be very hard hot work but will give him some money this summer.

asking for prayers for my very good friend who lost her mother on Sunday due to complications from Alzheimers disease. it has been a long hard battle for her mother and the entire family. visitation is tonight and burial is tomorrow so I know these next 2 days will hard on them.

since SPOT and Boo took care of breakfast, I will take care of lunch: bologna and cheese sandwhich with mayo, lettuce and a garden tomato, potato salad, chips, pickles. brownies for dessert.
tea or lemonade to drink.

Prayers and blessings to all.

May 27, 2015 - Msg 101458: Good beautiful morning, porch! It's absolutely gorgeous, clear blue skies, bright sunshine, soft breeze. To look out there now, you'd never know that around midnight last night, we were hunkered down beneath the beating of a rip-snortin' thunderstorm, all sorts of warnings sounding on the cell phone, worried-looking reporters on TV, and thunder crashing so loud the house shook. There was a LOT of lightning in the storm. One condo complex over in Dallas was set on fire, and at least one house. They had over twenty fire-fighting units at the condo. I'm thinking the rain helped them a lot, but they had the manpower there because of the potential, since it was a huge complex. So far, I haven't heard of any deaths or injuries related to the storm, but folks, it was a dilly! Poor little Toye Starr was feeling very small, and stuck to me like gum on a shoe.

Maude, I wish we could send you some of this. The rain that falls now isn't helping us much. The ground is so super-saturated that even a very light rain just runs off into the sewers. It sounds strange, after the weeks of rain we've had, and all the flooding, to hear someone describing drought conditions. Wish we could share!

My yard is a jungle. The grass was mowed one week ago, and is now above my ankles. Eddie will mow again today, unless it rains again. Like I said, it's beautiful right now, but another thunderstorm is predicted for this afternoon, and actually, for every day through Monday. I'm going to get some critter feed put out in a minute, maybe they can eat it before it gets washed away. I haven't been able to get in the beds and pull weeds, and they're knee high. Little trees - pecan, mulberry, elm - are popping up everywhere, and have grown so fast I can't pull them. It's going to take a man to do that, and even then, some may have to be dug out. Dratted little squirrels! I love 'em, though.

Well, better get busy. Blessings, everyone. Stay safe! --Romeena

May 27, 2015 - Msg 101459: "Just Call the Man"!

May 27, 2015 - Msg 101460: Good evening, porch. I'd like to offer an update on my pastor's progress. You'll remember that I asked for prayer for him, as he had surgery on the 18th for what was thought to be kidney cancer. The good news, that just bowled us all over, came when the pathology report came back and the tumor they removed was actually benign. It was an angiomyolipoma, a fairly common tumor found in the kidney, but it can look a lot like cancer until the pathology proves otherwise. He had already gone home when the report came back, and was doing well. His teenage daughter had surgery for a torn rotator cuff this week, which of course is a rough surgery and the recovery is difficult. Now, of all things, the pastor is back in the hospital with blood clots in his lungs! That, of course, can be life-threatening. So please, continue to keep him and his family in your prayers. We love them very much.

Looks like we may be cranking up for another thunderstorm. Que sera, sera! Nothing I can do about it, so will just hang on tight. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

May 28, 2015 - Msg 101461: Boy RO, what a roller coaster ride, both with the storms and
with your pastor's health! Glad it was benign, but now the clots! Was he on coumadin and then had to go off
for the surgery, perhaps causing the clots?
Maudie, prayers for your friend. I think you were here in 2007 when I lost my dear mom the same way.
GF--somehow, I just cant picture Mrs Spot going down the road bathing in that! ha
Friends, so much going on around the world that we
are not hearing about. Lord be with us.

May 28, 2015 - Msg 101462: Yep Romeena as they say: http://youtu.be/azxoVRTwlNg
After all this rain you may need to to get your machete and Safari hat on to get into your back yard, as well with all your furry critters...lol And we won't mention the size of the skeeters!.."Calling All Bats"! You may have to call Commissioner Gordon to get the "Bat signal" light fired up to bring them to you...^👀^.....^👀^......haha....G-F

May 28, 2015 - Msg 101463: Good morning, porch! G-F, you are so right about the skeeters! They are huge, and they are plentiful. I don't dare walk out back without repellent on. I bought some Cutter backyard skeeter spray, haven't tried it yet. You hook it up to a hose, and spray it like you would one of those fertilizers that work in a hose-end sprayer. Supposedly it gets skeeters, ants, fleas, ticks, and other assorted tiny pests. I haven't used it yet. Got to research it a bit more. I don't just spray any old thing back there. If this isn't compatible with an organic landscape, I won't use it. I just grabbed it as I walked by in Lowe's a few days ago, and really didn't know what it was. I thought it was Cutter's backyard repellent, which my SIL had told me about. You spray it on your screens, around doors, in porch enclosures and such, to keep the mosquitoes from gathering there. This stuff is different, and I don't want to risk harming my little lizards, bees, butterflies, birds, whatever.

MDC, I'm not sure, but I don't think our pastor was on any anti-coagulants. I really don't know why he developed the clots, but it's not unusual after any surgery. That's why the "mean nurses" make you get up and MOVE within a few hours, if at all possible. Knowing Bro. Ken, I'm sure he cooperated with them, but the clots still form sometimes. I'm sure he's going to be fine, but please keep praying.

Well, gotta run. I've got a home health call to make, and a couple of errands to run. Blessings, friends! --Romeena
