That is too bad about your back. Will keep you in my prayers.
PH and Asa--You two answered part of what i was trying to post last night. Maybe, just maybe, you did better in college because you were PAYING for it! Just a thought. I worked my way thru, and had no tuition ever handed to me. I am proud to say it too! :) OB wants the govt to do it all
from womb to tomb, and it was never meant to be that way at all.
Have a great weekend. It is busier than a cow's tail in fly season around here... football, golf, marathon, car auctions... actually I want the Phx of the '60s back! ha

January 23, 2015 - Msg 100533:
MDC, we paid for both high school and college. I attended a Catholic high school that charged an expensive tuition that my father paid. And although I worked four different part-time jobs while in college (not all at the same time), my father paid for most of the tuition and books. But after college, when I began working full-time and after my father had passed away, I supported my mother up until she passed away.
Here is an explanation about how I developed the motivation to do better in college. While attending high school, I lacked focus and direction. I performed below my IQ level and no one seemed to notice. Then after high school graduation, with a low draft number, no job prospects, and no offer of admission to any college, that is when I realized I needed to make a serious decision about my future. Although the Vietnam War was going strong at this time, I did consider volunteering for the military rather than wait to be drafted. However, because I preferred to serve as an officer, that required a college education. So I motivated myself very quickly to live up to my potential and do well in college.

from Poor Horatio

January 24, 2015 - Msg 100534: Good morning, porch. College - it's all about motivation. I had "skipped" the first half of the fifth grade, so that made me a mid-termer for graduation. I didn't want that, and didn't want to just hang around taking extra classes so as to graduate with a class in May. So, I gave up study halls and took extra classes, so I could finish in May of '56 rather than January of '57. Therefore, I was 16 when I graduated high school. Just a kid, and a country kid at that. My parents paid to enroll me in Trinity University in San Antonio, and there I sat, a dumb little country girl, in a classroom full of returning Marines and such. Also, I wanted to be a nurse, but my dad didn't want his little girl taking care of "dirty old men" (his words) so I was headed for a business major. Bored, out of place, not interested. I finished that year on scholastic probation, and didn't return. Twenty years later, married, with four kids, I enrolled in nursing school, graduated in the top 97% of my class and the rest is history. Motivation, my friends.

Gotta run. Eloise and I are heading out to spend the day with the grandsons, watching them play basketball in the church's "Upward" program. David coachees a team, and the boys both play on other teams, so it will be a basketball-filled day. Can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday. Blessings! --Romeena

January 24, 2015 - Msg 100537: Good sweep MDC. You musta used that cows tail to do it with. Yessiree a busy week in Arizona for sure. And thanks for the prayers for my back sir. Much needed and appreciated for sure. And thanks to PH and MDC for you comments concerning AAA. MDC, I had not even thought about the ins-urance aspects. But you say they are "good on claims". That is a huge deal in my thinking. I'll have to look into that deeper now. Thanks for the link PH.

Concerning school, by the time I reached high school age, our family was going through some huge challenges. My Mom took sick, and was unable to really function. My Dad lost his job where he had been employed for 22 years when the company sold out. So he started his own business about that time. And as anyone who has done that, those early years are long long hours with little return to start with. So I was working nearly full time at age 16 while attending high school. Most of my closest friends had dropped out of school by their Junior year. They were working and making more money than me, and I was tempted to join the ranks, but something in me said stick with it. So I did. After graduating I figured I was done with school. I wanted to go into construction. I loved building things and had taken two years of vocational building trades in high school. Sadly though, the economy was in the toilet when I graduated and there were no jobs out there in construction. I found a job in manufacturing, producing stainless steel sinks of all things. It was mostly "grunt" work. And it didn't take but a few months of that for me to realize I needed more than this. So I started taking some evening classes at the local University and found, maybe for the first time, I really enjoyed learning. Well the skills I picked up there were enough to propel me into a much better job at the place I was working. That really got me started in doing what I have been doing for 40 years now. I was stunned in my second year of College I made the High Honor Roll. Doing that, while working full time was quite an accomplishment for me. But I have never regretted the schooling I received, and Boo, I bet Sean won't either. You may have to prod him along some, maybe not. But I would encourage you to encourage him to keep with it. I guess for me it was a combination of maturing and motivation (as Ro mentioned) that inspired me. And I agree MDC, this idea of free schooling isn't going to fly. First off, there are no free lunches. No matter what it is, someone is paying for it. I believe a student needs to have some financial hand in their schooling. It just makes them take it a lot more seriously if they also have an investment in it. IMNSHO anyhow.

GF, 10-4 good buddy. This hear is the rubber ducky on the flip side. How'd the soup turn out? I hope you didn't find any can lids in your bowl. :)

January 25, 2015 - Msg 100545: Good afternoon, porch. Just got home from church. Our pastor was really wound up today. Nobody wanted the sermon to end. He titled it a "State of the Church Address." This was his last sermon before he takes a six-week sabbatical. His wife has just come through cancer surgery and finished her chemo and radiation, so the church decided to give them six weeks free of any responsibilities, to just be together and travel if they wish, or just stay home - whatever they want to do. I guess he just wanted to leave us with something to think about, and believe me, he did!

Possum, I just thought those extra rocks were your porch roof! They make your rock look very nice, I think you should keep them.

Well, better run. A friend had an extra ticket to a performance of "Annie Get Your Gun" at our local community theater, and offered it to me. She's a good friend, a fun person, and I love plays, so I'm going. Toye Starr is going to be pretty chapped when I leave her again after just getting home from church, but she'll get over it.

January 25, 2015 - Msg 100547: Good evening, porch. I really enjoyed the performance of "Annie Get Your Gun" this afternoon. The young lady who played Annie Oakley has a voice you wouldn't believe. The power, the clarity, and most of all, the range she has made me think of Judy Garland. A very talented young woman. In fact, the entire cast did a very fine job.

MDC, you're right, there was absolutely nothing "dry" about Bro. Ken's sermon. He talked about getting out of our comfort zone, how the loving ministry that we show so well to our own membership needs to be extended to the community as well. The demographics have changed so dramatically in Irving, and he challenged us to see beyond the differences, and be as welcoming as we can possibly be to anyone who enters our doors. They don't have to look like us, or talk like us, because God loves everyone. What makes us think we have the right to pick and choose? I won't try to repeat the whole sermon, but you get the idea. He didn't let anyone off the hook, believe me.

Well, I'm pooped. Guess I'll go scratch up a little supper - not much, really - and settle down to watch a little TV and cuddle my poor little Toye Starr, who has been alone almost all day and is definitely not happy about it. Dave and Brittney and the boys are over at Eloise's, and I could go over there, but think I'll just stay home. Joe is coming at 9 in the morning to do some serious pruning and trimming around here, and maybe I'll get him to plant my tulip bulbs, so I should get to bed at a decent hour tonight, since I need to be up around 7. I'm going to have to take down my beautiful lights in the back yard. The rose island is full of lights, and the rose bushes are on Joe's list to prune. If I'm going to put those away, I may as well just take all of them down. It IS the end of January, after all. It's just that they're so doggone pretty, and cheerful! Oh well. Such is life.

Of course, I'm not sure how you'd get here, with the planes grounded and all traffic ordered off the roads - in New York, that is. Y'all keep checking in and let us know how you're faring, until the storm subsides. Looks like you may be snowed in for some time. I would imagine the school kids are delighted, but lots of adults won't be. I'm thinking about hospital staff. I don't know how they handle things up there, but here when an ice storm hits and some of the staff can't make it in, the ones who are there have to just keep on working. You work a double shift, then get a few hours to crawl into a room somewhere and sleep, then get up and go back to work. I guess a tired nurse is better than no nurse at all.

Well, I'm off to dreamland. Joe is coming in the morning. I thought it was yesterday, good thing it wasn't, because we had a funeral yesterday morning. A friend's son passed - he had been sick a long, long time. After the memorial, we provided lunch for the family, as usual. My friend is doing well. She's tired, but she'll be fine. It's pretty tattered right now, needs some cleaning up. Just talked to Joe, he's about fifteen minutes out, so that gives me time to tidy the kitchen before he gets here. I had some desk work to do this morning, got some contracts signed and in the mail, and a birthday card off to my son. I absolutely cannot believe my oldest son is about to be 56 years old. Lord, where has the time gone? Scary!

Beautiful day here. Skies are clear and blue, not a cloud anywhere. The sun is moving into the position that makes it a laser coming in my window, and desk work is impossible for a few hours. It's a good thing, or I'd perch here all day and never get anything else done.

January 28, 2015 - Msg 100572: Howdy, porch. MDC, you might want to sit down for this. According to my weather thing on the computer, it's 80° here right at this moment, 3:57 p.m. Lots of high clouds, and a breeze blowing, but warm and balmy. Feels like spring. Supposed to be cold and wet this weekend, though. I hope so. The more rain we get now, the prettier our spring will be.

I love this time of year. The cold winter has suppressed the algae growth in the pond, and the water is crystal clear. The fish are beautiful, growing so fast! My biggest koi is now over a foot long - he started as a little baby koi about three inches long or so. His fins are long and flowing and he's just so pretty. There's a boulder beside the pond that's just about the right height for sitting on, and sometimes I just perch there and watch those graceful fish for long periods at a time. They really are so much fun.

Well, it's been a long day. Taught ESL class this morning, had three new students, eager to learn and with a long way to go! It can be a challenge sometimes, but it's so rewarding when they finally master some difficult twist of pronunciation (English has a lot of those) or when some concept finally registers. I'm glad I grew up knowing English. I'm not sure I could ever learn it as a second language. It's hard!!
I think only the Asian (tonal) languages would be more difficult.

Asa, I hope your back gets better very soon. That's so miserable. Do you have a really good, supportive mattress on your bed? You know, if your bed is more than ten years old, it probably should be replaced. I know, that's expensive, but it can really make a difference.

Well, I think I'm going to make a big glass of tea and go get in my chair for the evening. Eloise and I ate lunch at a Chinese restaurant today after classes, so supper tonight is going to be very simple, very light. I'm really not hungry. Maybe some cheese and crackers and an apple. I will say this tho, several Christian players did some darn nice things at Phx childrens hospital yesterday.
But get this, the sod for the field was grown in Alabama, brought here in 32 semis, set down on our roll-out field, re-contitioned after the pro-bowl,

Ro, we bought a new mattress a year ago. I got one og the top of the line ones because of my back, and because Debbie spends most of her day in bed. I wanted her to have something comfortable yet supportive. So I think we are ok in that area. My issue is more of a pelvic rotation problem. January 30, 2015 - Msg 100586: Very funny MDC...They've been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnall's back porch since noon today. No one knows the contents of these envelopes, but you, in your borderline divine and mystical way, will ascertain the answers having never before seen the questions."

I always liked that skit...Mr. Carson and his side kick are truly missed on late night TV....

January 30, 2015 - Msg 100587: I bet if they sealed those footballs in one of Aunt Bee's pickle jars, they sure wouldn't come out deflated.

January 30, 2015 - Msg 100588: Billy Ray, Would those pickle jars be "hermetically" sealed?...haha

January 31, 2015 - Msg 100589:
May a crazed camel spit in your eye! :)
Yes, Johhny and Ed were the best at Late night.
Slow on the porch today.
PGA did play golf, and NFL did close the roof
as it lightly but constantly rained all day.
Should be semi-clear on Sat.however.
Well, night all,
MDC

January 31, 2015 - Msg 100591: Afternoon all.
Just finished watching the third round in MDC's backyard. I be pulling for Bubba. That's a rowdy crowd there on 16 MDC. You wasn't amongst them were you? ;)

Frustrating to be sitting here with an ice pack on my back. Beautiful day, sunshine, mid 50's, golf courses are open. Very rare for January here. Oh well. That's life, through and through.

Big game tomorrow. Stacey and her family are coming over to have a party here after preachin. The grandkids love doing that, and we love having them, so it all works out great.

Guess I'll go see what I can muster up for supper. Some soup for sure. Easy and fast. Otis' brand I reckon. Lid and all.

Asa

January 31, 2015 - Msg 100592: Welcome Sweet Springtime We Greet Thee With SONG!!...Guess with 8" of snow coming tomorrow, I better put that song on the back burner...lol

Asa, Just put "Caddy Shack" in your DVD player and you'll be Ok... Then put in "Ground Hog Day" and you'll get a early spring??? Might work.....Might NOT!...haha (was that MDC on 16 holding the sign: "Down with the single tax" or was that Regis?)

January 31, 2015 - Msg 100593: Hi everyone. Sorry it has been so long since I checked in. We are ok. Sean finished his second week of school and is still doing great. I am still waiting to go to work. I am officially hired but the woman doing all the background checks is still catching up after knee surgery. I talked with the nursing director again yesterday and she told me they really want and need me, so I will hang on a little longer. I am going to need a paycheck soon, though.

Not much news, really. I don't even know who is in the superbowl so not going to comment on that or watch the game. we have a church luncheon and business meeting after church tomorrow so I will probably be ready to come home and veg out for the rest of the day. Hope you all have a great sunday.

Love,
Boo

Asa- I have been in the 16 crowd in the past, but
my hip arthritis has been bad lately, so nothing this year. Boo hoo for Tiger. ha
Folks, I am superbowled out with all our local
newscasts broadcasting from the various opulent
parties and venues. Super this and super that!
Hey, there is other news! Well, it will all be over tomorrow
night.
BOO--Glad that college is going well for Sean.
Seems like someone else could help out looking at your background, but what do I know. ha
POSSUM--you have had some funny stuff on FB lately. Love the Morelli's ice cream. Do they let
you bring your own scoop? lol
Good Sabbath to all. Thank you Jesus.

February 01, 2015 - Msg 100596: MDC, As I said, there is always the "chess network" to watch if your cable provider has it...Check?...lol (plus they may have a message for you to decode from Orphan Annie in the commercial) ha! (Drink your Ovaltine while you watch the Super Bowl) is what I think it will say!
But I won't repeat what Ralphie's response was since it IS Sunday.....And it wasn't CHECKMATE!

CHILI TOM, Asa & I will bring the "SOUPER BOWL" to the homeless today for sure! We will say: "SOUP FOR YOU!".. In your honor, we will have CHILI Ok?? We have the beans to swing it...

February 01, 2015 - Msg 100597: I hear you, MDC, that is why I have called the nursing director more than once to see if someone could get something going. Kinda crazy that they only have one human resource person and nobody to take over for her when shes out. I know it is a humble facility and there isn't a lot of money to go around. I will be working for less wages than I could get in other places, but cant help but think it is where I need to be so I am trying to be patient and wait..still praying.

The weather has been very mild here and it has been enjoyable. Its nice to be able to be outside and enjoy it..not hot/not cold. I am looking forward to spring because those are usually the best weather days in south texas and we spend a lot of time outside enjoying it. Bruce is hoping to put in the sprinkler system soon, once I am working, and we can actually get some grass growing out here in this sandbox. That will be a good day, I'm telling you. I am tired of the sand and stickers. Its crazy how our house is so homey and sweet looking and then the sandy land its on looks like something from the dust bowl. :(

Well, please say a prayer that I can get to work this coming week. I better get ready for preachin'.

Boo

February 01, 2015 - Msg 100598: Good afternoon gang...Super Bowl party at the dog house tonight...dancing afterwards...got lights strung up..peanuts boiling..pig skins frying..grillin hot wings on the grill,a little cider if ya dare (good jug is behind the barn)..celery sticks and carrots..blue cheese dressing..Pizza...salad..yall come on over at anytime...park in upper pasture..lower one is kinda wet...SPOT !

February 01, 2015 - Msg 100599: MDC,although it looks like it,I don't think that's an ice cream parlor that I posted on FB. It's regular food-get ya some Morielli's pounded steak to go! LOL

(Everybody else on the Porch is going.. "What??")

It's a Facebook thing,y'all wouldn't understand-ha!

Speaking of Facebook, I happened across something very bittersweet a few minutes ago. Our Rev's daughter has given birth to a little girl. Yep,that's right- Rev is a granddaddy! Looks like she was born sometime last year-there is a pic of the baby on his daughter's FB page. She's a precious little thing-wish y'all could see her. I shouldn't give out anybody's info, but if you know Rev's daughter's name, and her maiden name, add "Slatten" to it, and look for her on Facebook. You'll see the pic then.

Prayers, Boo.

Y'all take care!

February 01, 2015 - Msg 100600: As Goober said to Andy on "Return to Mayberry"...Granddaddy, Granddaddy, Granddaddy! Bless his heart... He would have made a good Grandpa for sure....G-F

February 01, 2015 - Msg 100601: Thanks for that info, Possum. I will have to look for her on facebook.

Everybody getting ready to watch the superbowl? I think I will take a nice nap, instead. :)

Boo

February 01, 2015 - Msg 100602: Awww. She's a little doll. REV's daughter has her daddy's eyes, and if that baby grows up to be half as beautiful as her mom, she'll be a knockout. Rev would be so proud! There would be no holding him down! I just have to believe that he knows, and is singing her praises in heaven. Wonder if he's written a song about her?

It's chilly here today, in the low 50s, but clear and pretty. I've been outside a little, fed the fish, put out bird and squirrel feed, reset a timer on the back yard lights (yes, they're still up) and just enjoyed the day a little. The rain we had yesterday has moved on out. We didn't get much, but we're grateful for what we did get.

The critter feed I put out hasn't been touched, and there is zero critter traffic out there. One little wren came in briefly, perched on a sprinkler head, then flew away. This tells me there's a hawk hanging around out there, but so far I haven't spotted him. He's been around here for a couple of weeks now. I wish he'd move on. My little friends have plenty of cover (I've made sure of that, with little nest boxes and lots and lots of shrubbery) but I don't like for them to have to be so fearful and hide so much.

The hawk is beautiful, but I can do without him. I wish I could pen him up in my garage for a while. Yes, there's another rat in there. He won't be there long. I got a trap! Now I have to get someone to set it for me. David will probably be here tomorrow, he'll do it. I don't have the strength in my fingers to pull that thing down and set it. I've had the live trap set for days, but he won't go in it. He should, because if I caught him with that, I'd take him over to the woods about a mile away and let him go. However, if he gets in the other trap, well.....

Blessings, friends! --Romeena
