Folks, it has occurred to me that I may be mistaken about Daphne's situation. I'm not good at navigating Facebook, but in my muddling around, I've discovered that there are several people on it who share her real name. It's possible that I've sounded a false alarm. If so, I will apologize, I will be grateful, and I will pray for the other family.
PH, could you check the archives and find where Daphne told us of the birth of her son, and what she said his name is? I've got an email ready to send to her, but obviously, I don't want to send it if it's not actually her loss. Dear Lord, how I hate things like this!! --Romeena
December 23, 2014 - Msg 100255:
PH, I just saw another post from the person I think is our Daphne, in which she gave the birthdate of the baby - September 16. I just checked the archives, scanned the one containing that date and the two that follow, and didn't find anything from her. Yet I knew her baby had been born. Maybe she emailed me, but I don't save my emails more than a couple of weeks.
Well, I've got to go make a home health visit. Yuck. It's cold and rainy, and I'd rather stay here in the warm house and make cookies, but duty calls. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

I've been on this porch, including its earlier incarnations, for about 17 years, and count each of you as my dear friends. You have seen me through loss and sorrow, illness, and some rough times. You have also rejoiced with me through the good times and the joys, and for each situation, I thank you. You have made me laugh when sometimes I didn't feel much like laughing, but thank God, one laugh leads to another! You have shared your tough times and your happy times with me, and for that I thank you, also. It's nice to be trusted in that way. I pray God's blessings upon each of you in this coming year.
I've just spent a most happy evening with David and Brittney and my grandsons, and with Brittney's family. We went to the Christmas Eve service at their church, and what a blessing it was to see them as they greeted their friends, David discussed a ministry matter with the pastor, and it's obvious that they're well-entrenched in the life of their church. What more could a mother ask? Now I'm home, in my jammies, and about to settle down for a winter's nap, which will not be as long as I could wish for, but it will do. Tomorrow I make a home health call, then go to Eloise's for Christmas dinner. Later tomorrow evening, my daughter and her family will be coming from Fredericksburg for a few days. So, I'm having two Christmasses this year. God is good.

Good evening, porch! It's been a wonderful couple of days here. Christmas Eve services with Dave and Brittney, as I mentioned earlier. Christmas Day spent at Eloise and Jerry's house (Brittney's parents) with a wonderful dinner. Brittney's brother was there from Michigan, with his two big golden retrievers - like having a couple of small horses in the house, but they're such sweet things, very obedient and well behaved. Bentley was there, of course, so tiny Toye Starr looked like an ant beside the three bigger dogs, but she was not intimidated, and they all treated her kindly. At one point, the two goldens disappeared, and I found them in a back bedroom, both up on the bed, absolutely sacked out, sound asleep and snoring. Too cute!
Tomorrow, Heather and her family arrive, and will stay until Monday. We'll have a turkey dinner on Saturday, which will be a breeze because there will be so many willing hands here to help. All my grandkids are very helpful and capable in the kitchen. They can cook, and they clean as they go. Mind you, all but two are boys! Cleanup after a meal is handled by them, and they do a good job. Their parents used to do that, and they've all brought their children up to do the same thing. Believe me, it's appreciated!
Well, I have a little last-minute tidyin' and fixin' to do, so guess I'd better get to it. I've got tomorrow morning to do things before they get here around 1 pm, but I have to go to the grocery store and make a home health visit as well, so that will pretty much take the morning.
Merry Christmas, everyone, and let's all try to remember that Christmas doesn't end at midnight tonight. It can go on all year. --Romeena

Good morning, porch! What a great Christmas time it has been, and for me, it's not over yet. Heather and Edwin and all four kids will get her around 1 p.m., and will be here until Monday. I haven't seen all the kids together at one time for more than a few hours since the older ones went off to college. It is so much fun to connect with them now as adults, see how they've matured, and still see flashes of the funny little kids they used to be. Then we have Trip, all of 7 years old (barely) and brimming with the self-confidence of an intelligent child, raised by a family of loving adults who indulge him a bit but still establish limits and enforce them. He's bright, imaginative, obedient, busy and respectful. This should be a great weekend!
Cookies? Oh yeah! I've got bunches. A party at Morelli's sounds like fun. Can I bring the family?

Things are looking bleak for my brother-in-law. He developed violent moods and memory problems. Doctors think it might be side effects from the chemo drugs so they stopped the chemo. They believe it may take two weeks to get the drugs out of his system before they can see if there is any improvement. And unfortunately, these particular drugs were the only ones that have had a positive affect fighting his cancer. I have asked my sister if there is anything I can do to help but she says not at this time. At least my nephews (their children) are able to come home to offer some support.

Yessir GF. Spending some quality time in my "Wheeler" this weekend. Finally got some snow here yesterday, and not much going on here at the house, so I figured it was "Wheeler time".
Something I learned last week I thought I'd pass on to you all. I had to replace a water heater in a building at work, and the fellow at the plumbing supply store mentioned it was a good thing I was doing it now and not next summer. When I asked him why that was, he said the in April of 2015 new Govt. rules go into effect on Nat. Gas water heaters and they will be manufactured with much more energy efficiency in mind. This of course means the cost of a normal size water heater will jump significantly, as well as installation costs will also increase greatly because the new units will require new type of vent ducting. So in hearing this, I am thinking I am going to buy a new water heater of the old style and then have it handy when the old one gives up. My current water heater is 14 years old now, and I figure it's days are numbered anyway. So It will be nice to have one sitting there ready to go when the time comes. So I just thought I'd throw that out there to you folks who may be in the same boat. I'm sure the new more efficient units will be cheaper to operate, but I am guessing it will take a lot of years to recoup that installation and replacement cost.
Happy Birthday MDC. Wow, they seem to be coming faster every year, don't they? I hope your Dad is still doing better.
Hey cook coaches, I cooked my wife and I a couple of Cornish game hens for our Christmas eve dinner (our traditional dinner for Christmas eve). And wild rice with an orange/raisin sauce over it. By golly, it turned out pretty darn fine. The one time I don't mind having my main dish concealed in a heavy sauce. And no, them hens hadn't done a lot of flying. :)
Well I think I'll see what's on the tube. Kind of a lazy day. I hate to ruin it by doing something productive.

Good evening, porch. Asa, it's just so nice to hear of your success with the dinner. I'm so proud of you! That wild rice with the orange/raisin sauce sounds wonderful. Would you share the recipe?
I've had a wonderful Christmas so far, and it just got even better. Heather and Edwin got here around 3, with their whole family. Granddaughter Julia is 23, Tyler is 21, Travis is 20, and little Trip is 7. They also brought their dog, Max. I have had a ball, watching those young adults and listening to their conversation. They're so enthusiastic, so positive, and so funny. David was here with Hudson, but Brittney stayed home with Landry, as he had fever and felt awful, poor little guy. I hope he's better tomorrow.
I had a huge limb down in the back yard. Actually, it was one that had broken and fallen with that last big windstorm, when I had so many fallen limbs, but this one had gotten hung up there, caught in two trees. Well, yesterday while I was gone, it fell. Didn't hit anything, and I'm glad it's down. David brought a saw, and he and Edwin and the older boys got out there, and in about ten minutes, the limb was gone. It was a big one too, about six inches in diameter at the base, and about twenty feet long, with lots of side branches. No small task, but they made short work of it. David changed two light bulbs that would have required a ladder for me, put a new water jug on my cooler - just does all those little things that help so much. He takes good care of his mama!
Everybody has gone to bed now, and I'm heading that way, but just wanted to check in. Sweet dreams, everyone, and remember, Jesus loves us! --Romeena

Your brother-in-law and family will be in my prayers, Poor Horatio. Bad time for this to happen to a family. Not that there is a better time with cancer. Hope they get a medicine that works and that he can tolerate.
Well, it was so warm out here today that Noah and I actually went for a walk down to the park and played on all their playground equipment that they have down there. Needless to say, Noah enjoyed it. Should have seen his eyes light up when I asked him if he wanted to go to the park! It was precious.
Supposed to get some snow tonight and into tomorrow. Even though we had a good time today in the relative warmth, I still would like to see a bunch of snow. We had kind of a white and brown and green Christmas. But the Lord did answer my prayer for snow for Christmas because it did snow and much of it did manage to stay around, until today. I just looked at it like it was one of those "winter" episodes of Little House On The Prairie; since it was filmed in California, they always had little patches of snow, surrounded by green grass(unless they used the set when they needed those big snowstorms).
Hey MDC, hope you have the best birthday today!

Good evening, porch. Another sweet, busy day with all the family here. Turkey and the trimmings, and lots of good fun. My 11 yr old grandson, Hudson, has been so good playing with 7 yr old Trip. He scales it down to suit Trip's age, and they have a high old time. Hud is a good kid. His brother, Landry (age 13), is another fine young man. Kind heart, helpful, and also good to younger children. I'm so proud of them. They're so much like their dad, my David, who was always the champion of the underdog and the younger children in the neighborhood when they were growing up. And you're right, G-F, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but in this case, the tree was a big old solid oak, my Dale. He instilled in all our kids a respect for me, and cultivated willing, loving hearts in all of them. He set the example, and encouraged them, and they've all turned out to be people that I can like and enjoy being with, in addition to loving them because they're mine. I am blessed.
Tomorrow afternoon we're all going out to David's house, and the older grandkids are going to a rink somewhere in Ft. Worth and ice skate. I think I'll just let that little activity pass on by. A fall on the ice (and I definitely would fall) would be just about all my back would need, to give up the ghost entirely. Nope, not gonna happen.
Well, everyone has gone to bed except me, and I'm receiving some hard stares from Toye Starr, so guess I'd better turn in. It's been a good day, but a long one, and tomorrow will be the same, so I need to get some rest. Blessings, everyone. --Romeena

Good Sabbath my porch friends. I hope you are all fine and dandy. And great to see you Lucy. I hope you are well.
Well Romeena, are you just trying to feed my ego by asking me the recipe for my dinner? ;) I'm guessing your asking about the orange/raisin sauce because cooking the hen and making the wild rice is something I am sure you could do in your sleep. In this case I heated up orange juice (I use the brand "Simply Orange Juice, high pulp)". Then made a roux with flour and butter, then add some milk, and then finally the orange juice and some raisins. Just put that over the cooked bird and rice. Delicious.
Hey GF, I propose a "Wheeler" marathon contest sometime this winter. We can arm ourselves with food, drink, laptop, and remote and see who can anchor the chair down the longest. You game? :)
Hey Boo, so glad you had a good Christmas. I am sure it was a bit different without your Mom there. I hope the new year finds you and your family well.
Guess I'll go train a little for my Wheelerthon". Then get ready for preachin'. Next week our time moves to a 9 a.m. start. I like that one the best. But I'm a morning person.

Ok Asa I'm in, I don't have a lap-top but I have 3 remotes to swing it! I made a batch of Wassail and my sister gave me a basket that is full of vintage soda pops for Christmas, so I'm good to go...
Possum, Before you know it you'll be like me and call Mt. Airy your second home. Russell is a neat man, to bad you could not have met Andy's childhood friend Emmett Forrest at the Museum he was a special man, his daughter is the "Keeper of the Flame" now for the Museum she is there often.
I'm glad to have met him and had my picture made with him.
Yep Romeena sure sounds like you raised a good crop of "Somebody's"...
Just think MDC on Thursday you can wake up and say: 2014 just seemed like, YESTERDAY!...lol

Possum, you are about to go and make me real jealous!! Wish I didn't live so far from Mt. Airy. Oh well, at least you are able to enjoy it and tell us all about it. ;)
Can you all believe that I am sitting here in front of the fire on this sunday afternoon. It is downright chilly here in south texas and I love it. Its one of those wet, windy cold days that see so rarely and I am enjoying it. Hope the rest of you are staying warm and enjoying this time of year...after the Christmas rush and looking toward a new year. 2014 was a year of change for us..some really good, some bad, but I guess it just proves we are alive and moving in the right direction. I hope 2015 is a good year for all my porch family.
I will be on the job search now that Christmas is over. I am praying for the right one. I don't just want a job and a pay check, I want to be in the job the Lord wants me in. Well, this laptop is acting weird so I should sign off before I lose my post.
I am going to try that orange raisin sauce next time I make a chicken, Asa. Sounds good. I'm thinking that rather than adding milk, I will try broth from the chicken instead..wonder how that would be?

What do you all use most of the time?

...Boo, You are suppose to chew your cabbage twice on New Years Day when you have your sauerkraut, but in your case you probably have "Hopin' John" instead right?
Well TOM the Browns blew another one today as usual but your Steelers move on while the Browns stay home and watch TV!.....G-F

At the risk of making Boo real jealous, I've met Emmett's Daughter, G-F! She was the one who took the pics of me & Betty Lynn. Didn't catch her name, but she told me who she was. She's a real nice person.I thought she was perhaps Betty Lynn's assistant and asked her that, and she told me she was Emmett's daughter and that Betty Lynn was like a mother to her.
Boo,I'm praying for the perfect job to come through for you, friend.
Well,I'm finally back home and need to settle down after this busy weekend,so I'll bid you all a good night!

Hi all. Possum, I thought the original Floyd was
pretty old back in 1960. Is he still alive?
I hope you all had a good sabbath day, and slowed down a bit. Another holiday week coming up! ha
Cards and Carolina coming up!

Possum, That would be his daughter Terri that you met, she is now the "Keeper of the Flame" for her Dad's collection. She is a real nice person, Emmett would be proud to know she is looking out after his collection so well.

Possum, you are becoming a real celebrity-magnet, meeting all these people! Who's next? :-)
I don't know if "snitty Helen" has a "best", G-F.
At least I can turn off Helen, or change the channel. I wish I could do that with my MIL. She is trying to do the same thing with Noah that she tried to, and is still trying to do with Kai; manipulate what they like and don't like. Wish she would get a life... of her own.
I was hoping for that snow Saturday night but when I woke up Sunday I was like Sgt. Schultz from Hogan's Heroes, "I see nothing!" I am going to stop listening to weathermen(and women).
Prayers on your job search, Boo. Hope you get one you want and is pleasing to God.

Big storm coming in from the west to hit UT and AZ on Wed, and then off toward TX.
Thanks for the info Possum. We are talking about the Floyd who went on about hog jowls, right?
He looked about 70 in that episode, not 40!!
Sterling, my MIL has gone to be with the Lord,
but she was, believe it or not, a very sweet lady. Sounds like yours is not quite as so!
Color eps now on ME-TV. Saw the one tonight about our porch's
own talkin' dog, SPOT! ha
BOO--hope and pray that the right one comes your way!

Big storm is right MDC. We are having one of our "canyon wind events" this morning. That is when there is high pressure in Wyoming and low pressure down in southern Nevada. The two pressures try to equalize so to speak. The result is huge winds coming down through the canyons. I am talking 80 to 100 mph winds that will last for much of the day. Add to the equation our current temperature is 14 degrees, well you can imagine what the wind chill factor is. The shop I work at sits almost directly 1 mile west of a canyon, so we really get hammered hard here. Thankfully we have not lost power. I hope that will hold true for the day. It's actually dangerous to even be out in this. Stuff flying around are like weapons. Miserable, miserable, miserable!

No,no,not HIM, MDC! I didn't meet the ACTOR who was the first Floyd-I met Russell Hiatt, the actual Mount Airy barber who used to cut Andy's hair. He (along with his barber shop) planted the seed for TAGS in Andy's mind & the rest is history. Sorry for the mix-up!
Wow,Asa,y'all hunker down & stay safe out there!
Well,Sterling, Jim Nabors is on my "Mayberry Wish List",but from all accounts he doesn't visit Mount Airy,so I doubt that meeting will ever take place. But it sure has been a blast getting to know all of the folks I've run into on my trips up there! Maybe I'll bump into YOU or some of the other Porchsters up there one of these days!
Y'all have a great day!

Possum, If ya wanna see Gomer you'll have to book a flight to Hawaii, he pretty much stays hunkered down at his home there these days.

Good afternoon, porch. My goodness, Asa, that weather sounds awful! You stay safe now, you hear? High winds like that are scary!
I sure do envy you folks who go to Mt. Airy, and meet all those fascinating people. I'd just love to do it, but it doesn't seem to be in the plan for me right now. Maybe someday. Sure do appreciate you sharing your experiences with us, though. Possum, I'd love to see your pictures!
Sure is quiet around here since the kids left. I miss them! Robbi and Richard will be here around the 9th, though, so that will be good.
Well, guess I'll go do a little laundry and tidy up the kitchen. Also, got some stuff to put out for the critters. Lots of little squirrels out back this morning. They're just so cute! David and Brittney gave me a wire-mesh snowman that hangs as a bird feeder. I filled it with sunflower seeds, and the squirrels have just been hilarious, hanging all over it and eating the seeds. The birds don't have much chance to get to it. No problem though. They sit on the ground and catch what the squirrels drop, which is considerable. It's just a constant critter show out there, and I love it! Blessings, everyone! --Romeena
