Thanks for cleaning up Maude, MDC would do it but he has a cleaning project at home to do. Hope it is going well MDC, water sure can make a mess out of things.
I'm finishing up on some wiring in my "Mayberry/Family" room in the basement. Then I have to hang the drywall for the ceiling, all I need are some muscles & a truck to pick it up, of which I have neither! They will deliver for $20.00 so I guess I'll "Pay the Man!" My Son will supply the muscles I'll do the installation.
It will be my "Happy Place" along with all my Mayberry Treasures! Next purchase will be the "Lazy Boy" recliner, I don't like the term "Lazy Boy" so I'll just call it "The Wheeler" instead, How about that? I may be slower, but I ain't LAZY, just a little less motivated than before to be politically correct.

Getting a little rain here, but not as much as down south.
Well gotta get. Time to call it a day.
Thanks for the vittles Big Maude

Just what did you guys do to tick O'l Mother Nature off?
Maude, How about some of those hot fresh from the grease Krispy Kremes? I'll bring the coffee & tea.
Romeena, How is the rat situation coming along? Maybe you need to watch Bill Murray in "Caddie Shack" and get some ideas. I suppose a rat and a gopher are a lot alike since they are both rodents. Or call the "Turtleman" (I think he did some episodes on rat removal)that is one crazy dude!
Better find something productive to do, yep go out and feed the squirrels & turtle.

Hi porch family! Sorry I have been scarce, but been busy and my morning routine isn't what it used to be. It used to be my habit to grab a cup of coffee and log on to the porch every morning, but it just hasn't been working out that way the last few weeks. Seems like everything changed during the summer. I still think of all of you often and will check in more often.
Have to go get Erin from school but will read the archives to see what I missed later and will check back in.

Beautiful weather here today. Bright sunny skies. with a hint of Fall in the air. 72 degrees this afternoon. Well it's just perfect is what it is.
Guess I'll head for home and pick some corn for supper tonight. Getting down to the end of it. Now that's sad. But them peaches are sure good. I ain't got no choice but to eat them standing over the sink. Talk about juicy.

Oh Asa, it is so hot here. Its been in the high 90s with high humidity all week and since we had some rain, the mosquitos are just awful. The weatherman said we will cool down into the 80s on Friday, which will feel great to us. Im sure it will drop the humidity, too. I love it when the fronts start to come, even if they are small ones. Would certainly love to have the weather you are enjoying, and I will eventually.
Fresh corn for supper, Asa? Man, corn is the best, isn't it? Seems like the older I get, the more I enjoy vegetables of all kinds.
I'm trying to think of something new or interesting to tell but cant think of anything right now. Bruce is having some trouble with vertigo again and is seeing a specialist soon. Erin is doing well in school and likes going. Sean has an appointment with his counselor on Friday to discuss getting him into a program to learn mechanics. I think he is considering learning diesel engines because we have a company here locally that repairs them. He could make a good living doing it. Everything in our area is about oil right now, so lots of jobs available with the drilling companies, etc.
Thelma Lou and Betty Sue (the donkeys) are doing well and Betty Sue is so round that people keep asking if she is expecting. I don't see how. Bernie is behaving but he about to lose three hens from his harem. Bruce is going to kill three of them that are no longer laying and we are going to allow the remaining hens to sit on some eggs
September 10, 2014 - Msg 99000:
oops...as I was saying, we are going to let the remaining hens sit on the nest and hopefully hatch some chicks. We have never eaten any of our chickens so we will see how that goes. The kids aren't attached to them so I think it will be ok. Now, if someone tried to kill and eat my rooster, I would not be happy.
I am still waiting to hear from the nursing instructor who is supposed to schedule my clinical days. Hopefully I will hear from her by the end of the week. I am ready to start working and paying off things.
This week I have been cleaning and organizing to make things easier when I go back to work. I cleaned out the refrigerator and gave it a good scrubbing yesterday, and cleaned out the pantry and removed all expired items, etc. I cleaned the shelves, papered the shelves, and organized everything. Hope it stays that way for awhile.
Erin is in a new scouting-type club at church called "American Heritage Girls" and I am the leader for her age group. I think it is going to be something fun for us to do together. We have community service projects, a camping trip coming up, etc.
I seemed to have turned a corner in my grief over Mom's passing. I was able to go into mom's old room and sort through some things with Susan. I found and posted some old pics of her on facebook and didn't feel any pain over it. I am doing much, much better.
Guess I have yacked enough. I'll try to be back to sit a spell before too long.

Spot, I don't believe I've ever had that silver queen corn before. I'll have to give it a try next year. I've been sold on the "Serendipity" stuff the last few years. And I will do a row of good old Golden Jubilee. I enjoy trying the different varieties. Bodacious was my favorite for a while, but with that you need to pick it and eat it when it's ready. It waits for no one. Serendipity is more forgiving.

Thanks Asa, I worry about me, too. ;) I am doing pretty well, though. I have been having trouble sleeping some nights and that makes for harder days, but usually I do ok.
We are supposed to be getting some rain tomorrow afternoon and that will help cool things off some. We are really looking forward to a break. When I went out today at 3, the thermometer read 98. Yikes!
Heard from the nursing instructor today, who told me that I would be contacted by ANOTHER nursing instructor and he would schedule my skills lab days. She also informed me that I will owe the college about five hundred dollars for the skills lab and the 80 hours of clinical work required by the state of Texas. Ouch. The refresher course through Austin cost me about a thousand. Why, oh why did I not just renew my license every two years. It would have been so simple. The instructor informed me that I am the first RN in the history of the college to ever require their helping and getting a license current. Idiot.
Made chicken in my pressure cooker tonight and then put it in the oven for a bit to crisp it up. It was really good! Asa, you might consider an electric pressure cooker. I think they are fun to use and makes getting dinner ready much faster. Today I used it to make some terrific mac and cheese and it was so fast and easy.
Well, has anyone been enjoying Andy on MeTV at 7/8pm? I have, when I was able to catch it. Not as many commercials as TVLand and they don't cut big chunks of it out in order to show more commercials.

Boo, how long has your RN license been expired? What kind of work are you expecting to seek once your license is reactivated? Hospitial? Clinic? Home Healthcare like Romeena?
When you mentioned that you should have kept renewing your license, does that also require some active work experience or schooling as well? I would think that anyone who stops working in healthcare but keeps their certification active would need some way of keeping their knowledge refreshed or current. Or can a nurse who keeps renewing her license, but does nothing to keep herself educated, can return to nursing after a lapse without undergoing clinicals or re-testing like you did?
As for remembering 9/11, last saturday, one of our cable channels aired special after special in sequence. While watching them, it was like reliving that tragic day all over again.
MDC, glad to see you reporting in. How high did the water get around your house?

I didn't realize it was the anniversary of your mother's passing, MDC. Hope it wasn't too difficult for you. I saw the sweet picture you posted of her on facebook. When my alarm clock went off this morning, I was in the middle of a dream about my mom. It was so sweet..she was singing. Mom had a beautiful singing voice when she was younger and sometimes sang at weddings and church solos, etc. I haven't heard her sing in many years..until last night. :)
PH, nurses are required to have 20 hours of continuing education to renew their license each time. They aren't required to work, but if they haven't for awhile, the refresher course is suggested. My license has been expired for 14 years.

Hey, I just purchased something for my computer, and they said the estimated day of arrival through the post office is Sept. the 22nd. That's a long time. Anything you can do about that?! ;-) Jk. I know what you mean about the temps. Just seems like the other day I could go out in shorts. Well, actually I still go out in shorts, but now I have to wear a jacket. I am not liking this fall weather thing anymore. Summer goes by waayyy too fast here.
Oh well, I guess I shouldn't complain about the weather if I'm not going to do anything about it.

Howdy to Billy Ray, Good you could stop in and say Hey! Asa, that corn was Goood! That "Allure" was right up there with the best I had this year. It has multi-colored sweet small kernels like the silver queen but has yellow mixed in too. The farmers daughter said they will plant mostly that one next year since it was so popular. Maybe you & SPOT can check it out for next year. (Maybe even MDC too) with all the rain they have been having lately... Also Asa, when you get done with all those chores, sand the floor, wax-on-wax-off, paint the fence up-down, paint the house ....then, and only then, can you go out and play! I'll help you with pressure cooking, it goes like this...Your wife invited 20 people over for dinner, you have 15 minutes to make it! Now THAT's "pressure" cooking!! lol :)

In my case, Poor Horatio is an unseen character mentioned in the Opie's Charity episode. As for me, I grew up, went to school, served in the military, and worked as a civilian all in the USA. After retiring early, I got married and moved to Canada (near Toronto). Now it's your turn to tell us a little about yourself including why you chose that username.

Thanks, Sterling, good to be back regular-like. I cant relate to your disdain (probably not a strong enough word) for cold weather. The only times I have experienced it was when I was having fun in the snow in Colorado. We get really excited down here when it cools off. The summers are horrid and unbearable so we hate to see summer down here.

Well lookie there, Billy Ray was telling a little about himself while I was posting. You are a year older than me, Billy Ray. I am an RN who has been retired to stay home and homeschool my 2 children (13 and 19). My youngest is in public school now so I am going to be going back into nursing again soon, as you may have read.
I forgot to tell everyone some exciting news concerning Sean. Remember I mentioned that he was doing some vocational testing recently through the department of rehabilitative services, because he qualified for help due to his Tourette's, anxiety disorder and learning problems. We met with his caseworker yesterday and she went over the results of his testing and said he did well. She said they would pay to send him to school for a two year degree or pay for a technical school, whatever he chose. He is leaning towards getting his associates in mechanics and he is gifted at that, so the caseworker told him to go home, pray, and decide what he wanted to do over the next three weeks. In the words of Barney, this is BIG...BIG. ;) Thank you for your prayers for Sean, and he will continue to need them. He will be required to take four hours per semester, and maintain a 2.0, which is not hard for most, but it will be a challenge for Sean in the basic courses.
Gotta go!

When I went out there Saturday night to pick her up, Brittney had a good dinner ready, and then we watched Wall-E, which I had never seen. (How that happened, I don't know.) Anyway, Toye Starr hopped up on the couch, climbed up and draped her small self across my chest and promptly went to sleep. She slept there, limp as a rag, through the whole movie! Little girl loves her mom!
Our church group went to Eureka Springs, AK, and had a wonderful time. The little town is fascinating, just climbing and rambling all over several mountainsides. There's not a patch of level ground anywhere, but anything you need can be found. Lots of lovely little B&Bs, great poky little shops, nice hotels and motels, very accommodating people, and everything is geared to make the tourist experience pleasant. There are four trolley lines - red, blue, yellow and purple - and each color has a specific route. You get a map, find your destination and note which color goes there, and catch that trolley. The cars are clearly marked. There's a central depot in the middle of town, and all the trolleys include that depot in their route, so it's easy to change colors when you need to. You can buy a day pass that's good on all lines, all day. Just get on and off at will. Across from the depot there's a restaurant, called "Local Flavor", and the food was wonderful. I got a Reuben sandwich for $9, and I have to say, it was the best Reuben I've ever had, and I've eaten them everywhere. My favorite sandwich. There were three of us gals, and we ordered one serving of bread pudding and shared it. We could barely finish it. It was huge, and absolutely delicious.
The highlight of the trip was the Great Passion Play on Friday night. Honeys and dears, believe me when I tell you, it alone was worth the trip. Rather than try to tell you about it here, I'll offer this link: http://www.greatpassionplay.org/
I'll just say this about it. The temperature was about 50°, it had drizzled rain all day, but did stop before the play began. We had disposable plastic ponchos, rented blankets for $1 at the play, dried our stadium seats with paper towels, and huddled under our blankets, cold and damp. Once the play began, all that was forgotten, and when it ended a little over two hours later, I couldn't believe it was actually time for it to end. We sat just spellbound, watching that magnificent production. It was excellent, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I'm not able to walk long distances anymore, as my back just locks up, but they have volunteers with golf carts all around the grounds, and they'll pull up beside anyone who looks tired, and offer a lift to the next station on the Holy Land tour, or wherever you might want to go. As I said, very accommodating people. If you're looking for a great short vacation for the family, I'd highly recommend Eureka Springs and the Great Passion Play.
Well, guess I'll go search out some lunch. Surely there's something in the pantry I can eat! Maybe some soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. Yep, that'll do it. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Romeena, I enjoyed reading about your short vacation. But after searching on Google maps, I have one question for you. I can't find Eureka Springs, AK anywhere in Alaska. Did you mean Eureka Springs, AR in Arkansas?

Ro, when I was in Eureka Springs last month, it was as hot as a goat's rear end in a pepper patch. Glad you had a good time. I have seen the passion play years ago, but I expect it has improved since the 80's. I didn't know you were a reuben fanatic..I am, too. :)
Got to get ready to take miss erin to see her doctor. She is having lower abdominal pain that is really bothering her and at first I suspected it was cramps but it is starting to sound like a possible UTI. Got to get it taken care of so she can get back to school. The way things are in school now, just missing one day gets them so behind. Her math teacher has been doubling up the math as it is, to catch them up. She brings home math homework every day.
Glad you had a good visit with Patrick, Maude. He sounds like such a joy. Aren't you blessed?

"As hot as a goats rear end in a pepper patch"? LOL. I like that Boo. I may use that sometime if I may. Reminds me of some of Andy's quips.
"Ain't we a picking our peaches before they are fuzzed up good"?
"More nervous than a long tailed cat in a roomful of rocking chairs".
"Cooler than the center seed of a cucumber".
"Slicker than a firehouse pole".
"Busier than a cows tail in fly season".
I'm sure there are more.
Sounds like you had a great time Romeena. And to come home to an adoring furkid. it just doesn't get any better than that.
Boo, Sure hope Erin gets feeling better quick.
Well better get. I had a horrible nightmare the other night that has really bothered me ever since. Any of you ever have that happen? I will share it with you if you're interested. But it was really awful.

Yes, Asa, I've had that happen, and it is hard to get past it. Most dreams flit out of my head a minute or two after I wake up, but that one didn't. I won't repeat it, it was most unpleasant, and I still remember most of it. It was one of those that just seemed like it had some meaning, but I never could figure out what it was. If you want to relate yours, to "unload it", so to speak, we'll listen.

Mornin' porch. Its already a hot, humid day here in south texas and I can sit the condensation running down the windows. yuck.
Sorry about your nightmare, Asa. I very seldom have one but I do have two that stick with me. One I will share, one I probably wont. Both were many years ago. When I was about 14, my grandmother in Michigan was ill that summer and mom went to help take care of her. I went to visit St Susan and her husband, who were living in Houston at that time. Dad was at home alone. One night I dreamt that I was back home with mom and Dad came into the living room with a suitcase and announced that he was leaving. He told us that he was having severe pain in his right knee and had seen a dr and was found to have advanced bone cancer. He said that he was not going to allow us to watch him suffer and die so he was leaving. Well, I woke up feeling terrible. I was due to travel home with Susan and Pat that same day. When I got home, much to my distress, Dad began complaining about how he couldn't sleep that night because of severe pain in his right knee. He had never mentioned pain in that knee before so I freaked out. After the dream I was terrified that he had cancer. It turned out to be arthritis, of course, but it was so scary for me. Coincidence? Strange, huh?
Better get Erin up for school. Thanks for the prayers for her, she seems to be doing better.

MDC, I didn't see anything that leaned toward any one denomination. It's Christian, obviously, but no denominational differences were indicated. It's just a beautiful, peaceful, inspiring, and informative place to visit, and I would highly recommend it.
Well, I guess I'll turn in. I've been trying to break my night-owl habits, and get to bed earlier, but it's hard to do. I'm a late-nighter by nature, and 17 years of working the night shift just pretty well cemented that habit for me. I know I don't get enough sleep though - usually just 5-6 hours each night, and that's not enough. So, I'm trying to get to bed at least before midnight, instead of my usual 1=2 a.m. So, later, taters. Blessings! --Romeena

make a right oblique to NM and TX.
Billy Ray-are you talking about TAGS fans writing additional episodes? If so, we've done that here a bit. Somewhere in the archives...

Hey Y'all- Sorry I've been absent from the porch for a while. Hope everyone is doing good. I need to read about a week or so back to get caught up.
I'm doing well, have a lot of irons in the fire which keep me busy.
G-F- you've asked about my going to Mayberry Days and I'm not sure I will make it this year.
My mama is in a nursing home/rehab facility following a lower leg amputation and although she is doing well,I spend a lot of time dealing with her and her needs.
Also, my grandchild Laci will undergo surgery tomorrow. Most of y'all know that she has mild Cerebral Palsy. She is having heel cord surgery in order to better enable her to walk. The surgery is not as rough as the recovery-she'll be in casts for many weeks. If you would, please keep Laci and her doctors and all involved staff in your prayers. They are surely appreciated. Love you all~possum u.a.r.

possum u.a.r., we can tell you have something heavy on your mind when you forget to post your rocks. It is either that or you are getting senile ;)
Prayers for both your Momma and grandchild.
Billy Ray the Postman, in your last post, you stated "finished a couple of the fan fiction stories". Did you read them or write them?
Also, regarding your username, I know why you include Postman, but is the Billy Ray related to Billy Ray Cyrus, the singer?
Romeena, I myself always used to be a night person and hated getting up early. But surprisingly, as I near the senior citizen age, I find myself now going to bed before 10pm and waking up early. I wonder why is that?
Also, I think MDC offered a good suggestion about trying taking a nap sometime during the day. Since you live in Texas where they are many hot days, follow the Mexican tradition of taking a siesta during the hot portion of the day.

Possum, you bet I'll be praying for Laci and all who attend to her, and for your Mom and for you. Surely does sound like your plate is full right now. Hang in there sweetie.
I hope GF is doing ok. He's been quiet, and mentioned he wasn't feeling great. Sure hope he ain't come down with a bug right before Mayberry Days. GF, which one is you in that picture that Floyd posted?
Boo, glad to read Erin is doing better. I hope things have calmed down for you also.

Prayers for Laci, for sure. Sounds like you have your hands full there, Possum. Hope things ease up for you.
Thanks Asa, I didn't get a phone call from the school today so I guess Erin is doing better. I am just confused about girls at this age because I am too old to remember what it was like to be 13! Maybe I had the same problems and just forgot. I know she has been EXTRA moody lately so I guess she is just becoming a woman (no wise cracks from the male section). ;)
Went and got my flu shot today and Sean got his and his meningitis shot so he will be ready for "higher education" hehe..I don't know if it is required in every state but it is here in Texas if a student is less than 21.
Glad you are feeling better, G-F.
Wish Ro would get herself back on the porch for a nice, long post.
It's still hot and humid here, and never got much rain..just enough to grow some hungry mosquitos. Come on fall!

I suspect that most of you have heard of Toronto's Mayor Rob Ford after it was alleged, then later confirmed, that he had tried crack cocaine while in office, even though he was off-duty at the time. And some of his public appearances while he was drunk made headlines. As a result, he has been ridiculed on many television shows, especially in the USA. Well the ridiculing has been put on hold when he entered the hospital. Today they announced he has pleomorphic liposarcoma, an aggressive malignant cancer. With the elections coming up on October 27, he had to withdraw. I'm only posting this because of his international notoriety.
Boo, maybe it is time you had the woman-to-girl talk with Erin about the "change".

Good evening, porch. Boo, it's nice to be missed. Thanks. Possum, we will surely be supporting little Laci in prayer, and you as well, as she undergoes that surgery. It will be hard for a while, but if it improves her gait and makes it easier for her to walk, it will be worth it. Prayers for your mom, too. You're in some tough years, my dear.
PH, I'm not "nearing" senior citizen age, I passed it on the fly some time ago! Can't say it made much of a change in my sleep habits, though. As for the nap or siesta which some have suggested, that would be very easy to do, as I run out of steam along about 2 in the afternoon, but if I do catch a nap, then I'm wide awake until the wee hours. I think it's just something I'm going to have to retrain myself to do. I lived in an upside down world for 17 years while working night shift. I suppose it will take a good while to change that back around. I try not to get all in a lather about it. If I can sleep, I do. If I can't, I get up and write, or whatever, until I finally get sleepy. Toye Starr gets a little testy if I stay in bed and fidget around, so I just get up.
Boo, with Erin, patience is the key word. And chocolate. Lots of it. (heehee)
Well, this day is winding down. I taught an ESL class this morning, then Eloise and I picked up Taco Bell and took it to Jerry (her husband) for his lunch, then we went out to Babe's and had fried chicken (thought of our dear REV the whole time, he really liked that chicken). After lunch, we went to the little rural cemetery where our little grandson is buried, and cleaned off his headstone, tidied up around several of the small graves nearby and then headed home. He would have been twelve today - hard to believe. When I got home, I had a few minutes to catch my breath, then made a home health visit, went by the office and picked up a paycheck and took it to the bank, and now I'm home. Phew! Not much on the schedule for tomorrow, and rain is predicted, so tomorrow may be one of my favorite days. Snug house, raining outside, and not much to do. Maybe one of those siestas might fit in there somewhere.
Blessings, friends! --Romeena
