August 06, 2014 - Msg 98693:
Oh, French fries! I should have thought of that. Fry sauce. To dip fries in. Makes sense. Hmmm. I'll have to try that. With that bit of information, I'm thinking I wouldn't want the pickle relish in it after all. Still, if I was going to put it on a burger, it might be okay.
You know, I was watching the "Opie and the Merry Men" ep a little while ago, and it crossed my mind that maybe the grown-up Opie (Ron Howard) ought to sit down and watch that thing a couple of times. There's a very good lesson there, and I don't think he learned it when he was doing the show, based on some things he's said and the people he has supported. Too bad. And that's all I'll say about that. I can disagree with him and still like him and his work.
Guess I'll go comb little Toye Starr's hair. She goes to the groomer tomorrow. She goes about twice a year, so they can even her coat up a little, clip off the stragglies, and make her look pretty. The rest of the time, I keep her clean and brushed. I like to comb her out before she goes though, because I know I'm gentle with the tangles and while I think the groomer is as well, I can never be sure. Starr doesn't seem to mind going, so I think they're gentle with her, but I like to have her pretty well tangle free before she goes.
Blessings! --Romeena

Yea Ro, give that fry sauce a try. GF, they is all kinds of other stuff you could add to it and kick it up a notch for sure. I do want to try the buttermilk addition to see if it gets closer to Arctic Circles style.
Sure do hope MDC ain't run off with no trucker. He sounded a might nervous in his last post.
GF, I was reading about that feller from Ohio who made a video of himself "watering" Art Modell's grave. My goodness. 61 years old and doing something so juvenile. And take a video of it and post it on youtube. Mercy sakes. I hope Tom throws him under the jail. :)

Speaking of Ron Howard, there was something revealing in that article link I posted in Msg 98588. It concerns him and his wife selling an east coast home and estate they used to own. Why did they live so far away from Hollywood? In that link, Ron is quoted as saying "We moved 3,000 miles away from the hub of Los Angeles, to raise our family here." Hmmm. They didn't want to raise their children in Southern California? I wonder why?
I did some searching for a TAGS episode with a house on dollies and came up empty so far. I requested more details from Thomas, but his memory is weak like mine. Since he claims that the background scene lasted for only about two seconds, I wonder if anyone will ever notice it. Only time will tell.

I just picked Toye Starr up from the groomer, and she's gaw-jus! So soft and fluffy and silky, and her little face is so cute, with the stragglies trimmed and all. She was a little miffed at being left, and wouldn't look at me when I first got there to pick her up. She'd sneak a peek, and when I'd look at her, she'd turn her head and look away. In a minute though, she was all wiggles and wagging tail, trying to get away from the lady and get to me across the counter. Her little snits don't last long.
Well, gotta get busy. I need to unload some stuff out of my car, so I can load it with stuff for the trip. Starr's stroller goes in, and her little cuddle bed. My car's trunk is a cavern though, so we'll have plenty of room. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

Hey GF, we ain't spring chickens anymore, are we? Glad you are almost done with your paint job. I felt like you sounded last night. Worn right out. Spent several hours just digging to get everything exposed. I have 2 other lines and about a dozen control wires running right on top of my leaking 2 inch line, so a lot of digging with a small hand shovel. And of course clay and gravel back fill makes the digging real fun. But just before lunch we got called off on another more pressing job. Good thing though. It was getting hot and I needed a break. But back at it today. My knees are just throbbing after yesterday so I don't know how much I'll get done today.
Romeena, what road trip are you taking? Where you going? I must have missed that.
Boo, Possum, where you gals at? Speak to us.
Sure glad it's Friday. This is the first full week I've worked in a few, and it's been a hard one. I am looking forward to the weekend.

Good morning, porch! Asa, sounds like you've had a tough week, and it's not over. Those knees can be a real pain - no pun intended. To answer your question, Eloise and I are headed for Fredericksburg (TX), about a 4 1/2 hour drive from here. That's where both of my daughters live. One of my grandsons has the lead in "The Fantasticks" in the Fredericksburg Theater Company's production of it. He's a good actor, and sings beautifully, has perfect pitch. He'd like to have a career on the stage, but says if it doesn't happen, he'll do something else, but will always stay in local theater. I can't wait to see him. He played Will Parker in a production of "Oklahoma!" with the same company about a year ago, and did an excellent job. He's only 19, will be a sophomore at Texas State in the fall, so he's got a lot of life ahead of him. Good kid, too.
Well, I'd better get moving. Still have to load the car. Not that there's that much to load. Just Toye Starr's stroller, my little diddy bag and hers, and a few clothes on hangers. I travel light. I'm packing heat, too. Yep, my .45 will be in the console. I don't have a CCL, but in Texas you don't need one when traveling. Two women traveling alone? I just like to level the playing field.
Later, taters. --Romeena

My next project is to paint the front porch posts and step railings, but I have to say like Mr. Dave told Opie: "I'll have to "study" on it awhile. Howdy, porch! Eloise and I got back to town about 3:30 this afternoon. I had planned to come home yesterday, but my Florida son was staying until this morning, so we did too. So glad I did. We had a great visit.
My grandson did a great job as Matt in "The Fantasticks." Thursday night was opening night, and the man who originally wrote the music for the play, Harvey Schmidt, was there. He's 84, in a wheelchair, and my grandson said he was just a great guy. He complimented Travis highly on his performance. Travis will remember that all his life.
David and Brittney and the boys went on from Fredericksburg for an 11-day trip out through Wet Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and into Colorado. They're going to have a wonderful time. They were at Carlsbad Caverns today. The boys are 10 and 13, so they're old enough to appreciate what they're seeing. I'm so glad they're making that trip. Naturally, I have Bentley while they're gone. So far, he seems to be doing okay after his cancer surgery. The vet said he probably had two to four months to live, because he fully expects it to come back. It's been three months, and so far, our Bentley-boy seems to be doing fine. Pray, friends!
Well, I'm beat to the socks. I think I'll go hunt up something for supper, feed the doggies, and maybe turn in a little early. I have to meet Ted at Lowe's at 7:30 in the morning to pay for the materials for a fence he's building at my smaller rent house. I think I might have gotten a touch dehydrated on that trip - I can't get enough to drink! My blood sugar isn't high, so that's not causing thirst. I'm just dry! It was awfully hot down there, and it's not cool here either. Looks like our "unusually cool summer" has deserted us.

Life is good. I've got my little Toye Starr lying right at my feet, and our Bentley-boy is stretched out, flat on his side, about two feet away, softly snoring. He's such a sweet dog. I just cannot accept that he might leave us very soon. So far, he looks good, eats well, is energetic, and doesn't appear to be in any pain. I'm just going to keep praying that he'll beat the odds and survive this thing. He's such a great little guy, loves everybody, but turned into a tiger when his beloved Brittney was threatened. Tested it again and looks good so will be backfilling today with sand and then a layer of topsoil and then some sod. Whew, been a summer of sprinkler repairs this year for some reason.
Speaking of such, I reckon I better get moving. That takes more and more effort with each passing year. Maybe I best take GF's approach and sit back and give deep deep thought on how exactly I propose to do this backfill. Might work. But I suspect the boss woill say "might not". Dog gone him!

Hey, Boo! Good to have you back. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed "Jonah" in Branson. I haven't seen it, but would like to. We saw "Noah" and I was just overwhelmed by it. The special effects are spectacular (animatronics), and of course, they had some live animals as well. When they were getting ready to load and close up the ark, live animals came down the aisles, walked up some little ramps, and walked right into the "door" of the ark. No one led them, they just did it. Donkeys, goats, pigs, birds - all two by two, and into the ark. It was amazing. Then in the next scene, you're inside the ark, and you really, really feel like you're inside that huge boat. It's worth the trip, and the price of the ticket, trust me. I'm betting "Jonah" is just as impressive. Can't wait to see it!
I'm glad Molly is still serving chicken! It was soooo good! I'm sorry it was so hot there, but I'm not surprised. I just love Silver Dollar City. The candymaker, the grist mill, the blacksmith, all fascinating. Do they still make lead shot by pouring lead through a screen from up on a little tower, and letting the beads fall into cold water down below? Amazing how the drops of lead go perfectly round when they hit the water. Does the undertaker still walk around the grounds in his black suit and top hat, and measure people with his big measuring stick? He was so funny! Well, anyway, glad you're home!
Asa, I'm sorry to hear that about Barney. Gosh, I remember when you got him, can't believe he's ten years old already. Poor little guy, doxies seem to be prone to back troubles, I guess. I read where some of them respond well to treatment with acupuncture, and there are vets who are trained in that procedure. I'm usually not a big fan of alternative medicine, but that has been around for many centuries, and has a proven track record for people. No reason why it wouldn't work for a furkid. Bless his little heart, he'll certainly have my prayers, and thank you for including Bentley in yours. The big old fluffy thing is snoozing here on the floor nearby. He's such a good boy.
MDC, that model number is Dirt Devil #082023. I appreciate your interest in my little problem!
Well, guess I'd better get moving around here. Eloise wants to go get some lunch, and I'm nowhere near ready to go anywhere, so had better get dressed. She has a clock in her stomach, and when that clock tells her to eat, she's ready! Guess I'd better get dressed and go pick her up. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

GF--Lots happening in Cleveland!! First you split a twin bill with the AZ Diamondbacks today, then you play the
AZ Rattlers in the Arena Bowl on the 23rd.
Then you have Johnny football, and in November the return of LaBron!! You are on the map, my friend! :)
RO--I will see what I can find here for ya.
I hope everyone is doing OK. I miss the beaches of SB, but reality has set in once again.
ASA--Prayers for Barney, sorry to hear about the little fella. You gonna join the GF and MDC retirement esquire club soon? I golf in the 90s, still trying to hit 100, my US Steel stock is up an eighth, and my baked alaska is about as good as the state it was named after! haha
Prayers continue for you all and for the world!
Rest in peace Lauren Bacall, together with Bogey once again.

Yep, Asa You need to put a bucket on your head and think about MDC's advice, jump in, the waters fine! Plus, Barney and the birds and squirrels would like the attention too. All you have to do is learn the "secret handshake" it's a lot like the one's they do at the FBI. Then maybe if you get to bored you could get a PT job at the bank, but be sure to go down to the hardware and get a screw for your gun first.
MDC, Don't forget, Cleveland is hosting the Republican convention too. Maybe they can get some folks to switch sides, that area is a heavy Democratic part of the state now.

Morning everyone! hope everyone is up and ready to face the day.
I have been taking off a little early the past couple of days. Mr. Maude took some vacation time this week and Patrick leaves to go back to school on Sunday afternoon. I thought I would go home and and spend time with them. Beth starts class on the 26th but she has decided too commute back and forth. It is only about a 40 minute drive so shouldn't be too bad for her.
Our weather has been cooler the past few days. Almost fall like. Cool afternoons and evenings and cool foggy mornings. We still have a bit of summer left to go through so I know the heat will soon return.
breakfast menu; pancakes with butter and maple syrup, bacon, sausages. fresh blueberries, strawberries and yogurt. coffee, tea, milk to drink.
everyone have a blessed day!

Almost, but not quite- I did follow Crosby Stills & Nash's tour bus up the interstate the other night, though! GROOVY!
Anyway.. hope everyone is doing good. Send some of that fall weather down my way, Maudie-I am so ready for summer to be over with!
Y'all take care and have a Mayberry kind of day!

Oh, that's right, I'm not either haha! They did some good music back in the day, I'm more of a John Denver - Neil Diamond guy myself, but then again Neil is kinda old himself, and John would have been too. I did like JD's music, no matter what Charlie Rich said about him....So I better get back outside and get some "Sunshine on my Shoulders" it helps the sore muscles!

G-F, I enjoyed that Mayberry Reunion video link you posted in Msg 98733. Thanks for posting it.
MDC, you mentioned a "retirement esquire club". Since I am retired and receiving a pension, am I eligible to join?
Welcome on the return of Boo, Romeena and MDC. Glad to see you all made it back safely. Speaking of trips, my wife and I just returned from a weekend trip to Erie Pennsylvania. And there was nothing eerie about it.

Good morning, porch! Possum, you mean to tell me that Stephen Stills can play a guitar better than Jim Lindsey? That must have been something to hear! Could he make an acoustic guitar sound like an electric steel, and could he make all the rest of the instruments too, with just that one guitar? Wow! That must have been something to hear!
Sure is pretty here this morning, a beautiful day, but gonna be hot, hot, hot! It's just 81° at 10 a.m., but expected to hit 100°, and going for 104° tomorrow. You know, you just can't put enough water on some things to keep them going. My petunias are long gone, even though I kept them watered. The plants just bake and die.
MDC, you are so right. Across the world, Christians are being persecuted, driven from their homes, tortured, and murdered in large numbers. Our own country has been attacked as well - 9/11, the marathon bombers, the Ft. Hood shootings, etc. - and yet we're allowing the cancer to grow and spread unchecked. We're choking on our own Constitution (what's left of it) and I truly have no idea what the answer is. We are on a very slippery slope. Go against the Constitution, deny them their religious freedom here, and where does that stop? Honor the Constitution and watch them systematically, step by step, overrun this country and turn it into an Islamic state, with Sharia law? I wish I knew the answer, but I don't, and I'm not sure that any mortal does. Only God can solve this mess.
Well, got to get busy. Today is the 15th, all documentation on home health visits has to be completed and submitted today, in order to be paid on the 20th. Anything turned in after today will not be paid until 9/5, and I need the money now! I'm enjoying this almost-retirement, but finances sure do get close to the bone. Of course, buying these hearing aids didn't help, but it sure is nice to be able to hear well once again. OK, off I go. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Laawww! What are we going to do with you, G-F? I declare, you are a bird in this world.
My ESL classes will resume in a few weeks, and I've got to start thinking about what I'm going to teach them. We don't have an organized curriculum, answer to no one, no tests to meet or anything. I do have some workbooks, but they seem to get bored with that. The last six or so classes before summer break, I was just free-handing it, and they seemed to like that. I've tried to bring out things that would make them sound more like a native speaker, such as using contractions, and teaching them colloquial phrases. I'm keeping a little notebook in the car, and when something catches my notice, I write it down. For instance, I was listening to a CD by Whitney Phipps, and he sang "Steal Away." It occurred to me that "steal" would probably only mean "theft" to a non-native speaker, so I'll be teaching them that it can mean to move silently, to be unnoticed. That will take us into "stealth", etc. They seem to like chasing words through their various incarnations. Personally, I love doing that, and I found that most of my students do as well. Sooo - "Will you help us?" If you think of words with unusual applications, or sound-alikes with variants, let me know. Things like: "Lead" - to cause to follow. Past tense - "led." Then there's "lead" - the heavy metal. Three words, with two spelled alike and two pronounced alike, and all with different meanings. Very confusing for a person trying to learn the language. I don't know how they ever get it done. Spanish is much easier. Here's another: "The men decided to desert their mission in the desert, and go to town for some dessert." Wow. So please, if you think of any other anomalies in our language, tell me. I can build a class around it!
Well, I've been sitting here too long. My feet haven't fallen asleep, but they are looking a bit puffy. Need to go prop them up for a while. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Hey Romeena, you have got to teach them to say "Rubber baby buggy bumpers" 3 times real fast. I know that's not what you were looking for but it's the best I can do on a Friday night.
GF, I declare I'm about to have a spell. I got all my water mains turned on this morning, and you got it, another blessed leak! This one is about 40 yards south of the other two I just fixed. I had to turn the water off and leave it until Monday because it's just to stinking wet now. These leaks are a horrific pain because they have two other pipes buried on top of them plus about 3 dozen control wires. You better go sharpen your shovel buddy. I need hep!
I don't know if you have heard about the lady from Salt Lake who was having lunch at a Dickey's BBQ joint and drank some iced tea that someone had added acid to thinking it was sugar. Very sad. They don't know if she is going to survive with bad burns in her mouth and esophogous (sp) I hope she will recover.
Well better go do my back exercises and stretches. As boring as an obummer press conference when the teleprompter goes out. But at least the exercises help me. :)

ROMEENA--from an old English teacher, grammar
can change a lot too! Example: the placement of
2 commas changes the meaning of this sentence.
(One that I always used as an example...)
"The mountain man eats shoots and leaves." OR...
The mountain man eats, shoots, and leaves." "Shoots and leaves" take on totally different meanings with the placement of two commas!
ASA-- maybe you should get Mr Wheeler to help ya.
I think he has one of them water findin' sticks! ha. When I put a system in my backyard, I made darn sure to put pipes side by side with a least an inch in between. Of course, yours were probably done by someone from "someplace else." :)

Good morning, porch! I had this half-written, hit the wrong key, and it all went away. Just kicked myself clear off the porch! I hate when that happens.
We're shaping up for a very hot day around here. It's almost 90° at 10 a.m., clouds are coming in, the humidity is rising, and it's going to be a steamy day. Small chance of rain tonight though, so that's a good thing! Hope it really does it.
Our Bentley is such a sweet boy. He sleeps on a big pillow on my bedroom floor, rather than on the bed. He doesn't seem to want to sleep on the bed, and I don't push him. Toye Starr, of course, sleeps tucked in beside me. This morning we all slept late, and when I woke up, Bentley was standing at the bedroom door, nose right against the door, just patiently waiting. He had to go potty, but he had not made a sound or bothered me in any way. I got up and let him out of the bedroom, and he raced to the back door. When I got there, he was fairly dancing and went through the door like a shot when I opened it. Poor guy watered the grass for about five minutes, it seemed. He really had to go, but was too polite to wake me. Toye Starr, on the other hand, if she wants off the bed, has no reservations at all about waking me. She will dance on my head if necessary, the little brat. Of course, I guess that's better than wetting the bed, which she has never done. Furkids - ya gotta love 'em!
TOM, that verse is a favorite of mine as well. Thanks for sharing it. Glad your brother is doing better - hope your Sis is too.
MDC, I actually have a book entitled "Eats, Shoots & Leaves", by Lynne Truss, a gift from my daughter. It's a fascinating little book, was a runaway bestseller in the UK, and belongs in every English teacher's library. Since I love words, I find it very interesting. To someone who isn't afflicted with that word-interest, it would be slow going, for sure. I say "afflicted" because it can be darned inconvenient and annoying to care about such things. If I have to pass through a door marked "Ladie's" in order to wash my hands at a restaurant, it's hard for me not to mention it to the manager. I don't, of course, but I'd really like to! My own grammar and punctuation are far from perfect, I know, but then I don't hire out as a sign-painter, either!
Sometimes there is no actual error, it's just that the way a phrase falls is weird, or funny. Here's an example: Here in Irving, an Asian family named Chin owns a beauty salon. The very large black and gold sign above their building reads "Chin Hair Designs." Oh my. You can just imagine the mental pictures that generates. It could have been improved by making it "Chin's" and in slightly smaller letters on a second line - "Hair Designs." Even that would have gotten some second looks, but as it is, it just knocks your socks off. I never drive by that location without seeing mental images of older women coming out, sporting fancy little braided or bejeweled goatees.
Well, enough of that nonsense. Thanks, MDC, for reminding me about my little book. I'm going to dig in that thing like a gold mine, to find material for my ESL class. Have a great day, everyone. --Romeena
