July 20, 2014 - Msg 98530: Wow, Spot, that lunch sounds delish! Even yummy! Lunch won't be too shabby at Eloise's house, but that spread of fried chicken and all those veggies sounds wonderful to me.

G-F, I've been watching from this window for about ten years now, and have learned what food attracts what critters, and it sure is fun. I buy a seed mix, that pretty much has something for everyone, so I get a wide variety of visitors, but I supplement it frequently with peanuts for the jays and woodpeekers, and cracked corn for the doves. Those things are in the mix, but in small amounts, so I throw in a little additional. I also put out stale bread and crackers, dry cereal, and any berries that might be going too soft. That always draws a crowd, especially those of the squirrely persuasion. It's fun to watch one of them run down the tree, grab a big old hunk of bread or biscuit or whatever, and haul it back up the tree. There's a big branch that takes off from the trunk at about six feet, and it forms a plateau about the size of a dinner plate where it leaves the trunk. The squirrels love to perch there and eat their prize - such fun to watch. Nature fascinates me!

Well, guess I'd better get ready to go over to Eloise's. I like to get there a little early and see if she needs any help. She usually doesn't, and it's actually hard to help her because her kitchen is very small, and it gets crowded quickly. I am so grateful for my big old sprawling kitchen. I can have six people in there with me, just milling around, and I can still get a meal on the table easily. That was one thing I specified when we designed this house. If there were any extra square feet, put them in the kitchen! I'm so glad I did, because that's where everyone hangs out when they're over here. This house it awfully big for just one person now, but when I do need space, I'm glad I have it. I plan to stay here as long as I can. Been here almost 41 years. It's home.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

July 21, 2014 - Msg 98536: Happy Monday! checking in from work today. Looks like I am the first one up this morning.

I spent most of my week end sitting in my chair with icy hot or a heating pad on my poor ole back. I must of strained a muscle in my lower back. I had a difficult time moving around. Not at all sure what I did but it surely put me out of commission for the week end. I wasn't able to go to preaching yesterday. I am feeling a little better today and made it to work.

Glad you are feeling better MDC.

Mr. Maude and I are planning on driving over for
at least 1 day for Mayberry Days. we will probably come on Saturday. Hopefully we can meet some of you while we are there.

well, guess I had better get busy.
Breakfast will be: french toast with maple syrup, powdered sugar, bacon, sausage, fresh strawberries, blueberries. coffee, orange juice, chocolate or white milk to drink.

Prayers and blessings to all.
Big Maude

July 21, 2014 - Msg 98537: Good Monday morning all.
I am back to work after being off all last week. Was off 3 days for the funeral, and had to take a couple of vacation days or I was going to lose them. So back here for three days. Thursday is a State holiday, and I think I am going to take Friday off on a vacation day and make it a 4 day weekend. Yep, that's the plan. I do have to get some Cat. 6 wire run this week, but that shouldn't be to big an issue.

Sounds like a nice breakfast Big Maude. Sorry your back is acting up. Mine has been giving me issues since April. I got it adjusted but it has still not gotten back to normal. I know how painful those backs can be. Hope you get better soon.

Glad you are felling and feeling better MDC. You also Boo. Not any fun getting that close and personal with the toilet. But it happens to us all at times. :)

Well better get moving. Lot's to do.

Asa

July 21, 2014 - Msg 98538: Asa, Thanks to those rugged Pioneers you get the day off Friday... Sounds like one of those Holidays the Morrison sisters came up with to celebrate with some of the "recipe" but since you don't partake, do you still get the day off?? haha...

There is peace at feeder todaaay, the woodpeekers & blue jays are aaaway, and the squirrels are left to plaaay,...all daaay.. Yes, there is peace at the treee todaaay! Now, try to get that song out of your head....lol

July 21, 2014 - Msg 98539: Yessir GF. Actually it's Thursday, the 24th. But why not make it a 4 day weekend? And no, I don't partake. Bad for my liver. :)
Hey, I think Romeena has a birthday on Thursday or Friday. What day is it Ro? And may I be the first one here to wish you a happy birthday. Unless you're trying to fly in under the radar in which case allow GF to be the first to wish you a happy birthday. :)

Asa

July 21, 2014 - Msg 98540: Good evening, porch. Thanks, Asa, actually my birthday is Thursday, and I'll officially be three-quarters of a century old. Good grief! That's OLD! The older I get, though, the more grateful I am to still be around, vertical and on the green side of the grass. I can still do just about anything I want to do, I just can't do it for very long. It becomes a matter of budgeting my time and energy. I no longer try to jump in and clean this whole big old house in one day. I used to do it, but have better sense than to try it now. I start two or three days ahead of an event, and do a couple of rooms a day - the ones that won't be the center of activity - and leave the living area and kitchen for last. The other rooms aren't used, so they stay clean, and the main area will be fresh for whatever is going on. Also, I've discovered that "clean" is a relative term. If the furniture is dusted and the clutter put away, and the vacuum run over the open floor area, that's great. No one knows if I vacuumed under the sofas, or vacuumed the furniture itself. If the sofas and chairs are dusty, they won't be by the time my grandsons have flopped on each piece a dozen times. Not only that, but my family doesn't care anyway. They'd rather have me rested and feeling good in a reasonably clean house, than worn out and exhausted in a spotless one. Values - sometimes it's good to reassess them.

David came by and took me to lunch today. He does that fairly often, and we have some good conversations. He's such a good guy.

My brother is in the hospital tonight. He had some sort of spell this morning, which by his description sounds very much like a hypoglycemic episode to me. He's not diabetic, not on insulin or anything like that, but he doesn't eat like he should. My SIL called the EMTs, and they took him to the ER, where he was already feeling better. The hospital admitted him for observation tonight, and have been testing him for a possible stroke, but everything is coming up negative. I still think his blood sugar just bottomed out. The description of how he felt and how he reacted, was precisely the way I feel and react when I have an insulin reaction. Shaky, weak, sweaty, insides feel quivery, vision darkens, and thinking processes go all haywire. Fine motor processes aren't too good either. You should see me trying to stick my finger and test my blood sugar! How I ever get that strip stuck into the meter, I don't know. My kids describe it as "mom done spaced out again!" They're just full of sympathy, the weasels.

Well, guess I'll go round up some leftovers and eat a bite. I fell asleep in my chair a while ago, and now I'm awake and hungry and it's 9 pm. Hmmm. No wonder my blood sugar gets weird now and then. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Glad your brother is doing better!!
You mentioned vacuuming, and I forgot that we have a neat sew and vac shop about 2 miles away. The guy has worked there forever, and he has lots of parts, mostly used, but good. He reminds me a lot
of Emmitt. Anyways, if you tell me the model number, I could check for a hose there. Could mail it to you if he has one.
Big MAUde, so sorry that you are having the misery in your back. Hope your remedy helped.
Sounds like there will be a contingent from here heading to Mayberry Days. Wish I werent so 'fer.'
ASA--glad all went well with the funeral and all.
Hope you have time to decompress a bit. The four days off coming up will be good.

July 22, 2014 - Msg 98543: Haa,Chaa,Chaa,Chaa! Good one MDC, Speaking of MDC, you know you could go to Mayberry Days too. All you have to do is catch a flight and land at the Mayberry International Airport...(A path cut thru Kelsey's corn field)..Then you could be a part of the fun too! Ha! Just be sure to make a call ahead to Gomer so he can pick you up in Wally's truck at the airport...If not, I'll pick you up in the Goobmobile....

Romeena, How's about we just call you a "25 year old 3 peeter" and leave it at that...lol :)

Suppose to be in the 90's today but I'm not complaining after the winter we had....

TOM, Give us a shout-out, how are you doing buddy?

I found MeTV since I did a auto-scan on my set, I like the old shows they show. I saw old Mr. Wheeler on Petticoat Junction. Uncle Joe moves slow just like Wheeler...

Hey, maybe me and MDC can pile in his old Model T and drive over to Mayberry Days. Unless he burns out a bearing and sells it for scrap for 12 bucks, we ought to make it two weeks. (MDC insists on pulling the car over every hour for a twenty minute rest, so it may be more like two months)

Yep, it's good to hear MeTV is getting Andy, sure am tired of all the commercials, and edited episodes on TVland. Also MeTV is getting "Black Sheep Squadron" too. I always liked that show with all the Corsairs flying around. Yep, Pappy Boyington was rare breed...Wonder if they show 12 o'clock high too? I'm glad I hit my auto-scan and found that station.

July 23, 2014 - Msg 98550: MDC, Romeena, Boo, and me making a road trip cross country? Sounds like fun as long as MDC don't get to serious about it. Then when I try to open the door to get in he'll tell me "I'll open the door". Then he will have to remind us all when we smell gas that the car doesn't run on coal. Boy, he can be a real study, MDC can. :)

July 23, 2014 - Msg 98553: Wow. That would be some fun road trip, wouldn't it? We'll have to have room for five, though. I imagine Eloise will want to go. She loves to travel! She's a TAGS fan too. As for Toye Starr, (thanks for including her) she won't be any trouble, as long as she has a lap to sit in. She usually prefers mine, but occasionally makes the rounds in a car. She's an equal-opportunity lap-sitter. I'll bring along some of her piddle pads, and she can have a "rest stop" whenever we do. That gets me some stares on a gas-station driveway, believe me.

I've got the nicest surprise going on in the yard right now. About three years ago, I acquired a bunch of pale pink surprise lilies. I've mentioned surprise lilies before - I have them all over the yard, but they're all the red "firecracker" kind. Beautiful, and very interesting in their bloom habits. However, I got the opportunity to buy these pink ones, called (of all things) "Naked Lady" lilies. They looked quite beautiful in the picture, and I managed to get about two dozen, from eBay. I gave them to Joe and Jorge, and asked them to just plant them randomly and not tell me where they were. Well, they did, but it seemed none of them lived, because I never saw them anywhere. Well, this year, suddenly there they are! There are clumps of beautiful pale pink lilies blooming all over the place. Apparently they just stayed underground, multiplied, and now they're up and blooming. I know they multiplied, because each clump looks like at least three plants, and I know Joe didn't plant them that way. That's one of the assets of surprise lilies - they multiply like mad.

A stinkin' little squirrel is systematically stripping the leaves from my potato vine! I had a huge, full and fluffy potato vine growing from a hollowed out stone, sitting on top of the big cedar stump outside my window. Yesterday, I sat here and watched a little squirrel eating the stems of the leaves. He would pick a leaf off the vine, then like a tiny wood chipper, he would feed that stem into his mouth, munching rapidly the whole time, until he got to the actual leaf. He would throw the leaf down and go back for another. There's now a length of leafless vine about two feet long, hanging over the edge of the stone planter. There are about six more vines coming out of the planter. If he comes back every day, soon there will be nothing left. The little brat.

Well, gotta get dressed and hit the road. I've got a home health visit to make at 11:30, and another at 3. This gets in the way of my day at times, but it's nice when I pick up that check. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

July 25, 2014 - Msg 98575: Hahaha! You folks are a caution, for sure! That was some party. Almost made it feel worthwhile to get older.

That dadburn little squirrel has now stripped the leaves off of three of the vines hanging from my potato vine, in the stone planter. It was so pretty, and now it's just plain tacky. I hope it gave him the squitters. It's not enough that he and his tribe dig up my tulip bulbs, and plant pecans in my flowerbeds, eat every single pear from my tree every year, chewed up my welcome mat, and pulled all the stuffing out of a chair cushion and hauled it away. When all the fluff was gone, they carried the cover to the top of a neighbor's tree and flew it like a flag up there. As I've said so many times, it's a good thing they're so cute.

Well, guess I'd better get busy around here. This house, as my mom would say, is a disgrace to the hoot-owls. I've never been sure exactly what that means, but you get the picture. How can one old gal and one tiny dog create so much clutter? And the dust! This house is tight as a drum. No drafts, no way for dust to sift in, but somehow, it does. I could plant corn on my coffee table right now, and I just hate to dust. Hmmm. Maybe there's a clue in that last phrase. Oh well. I'm not going to get it done sitting here talking about it. Off I go. I wish Malcolm Merriweather would drop by.

Romeena, Before I went to the flea mkt. I caught one of my squirrels with a tomato in his mouth, he was sitting on my planting bench looking like..What? Who me? I suppose he will want bacon, lettuce, and mayo (on toast) to go with it too. Unless he prefers Miracle Whip, good thing, I have BOTH!!

G-F....

July 25, 2014 - Msg 98578: Hey there, Dragonfly! Long, long time, no see! Glad you stopped by. How about making it a habit?

G-F, you might want to put out the salt and pepper shakers too, for your squirrel. Might as well make his sandwich complete. Oh, and I'm glad you're an equal-opportunity condiment person. Personally, I like Miracle Whip, but I do keep mayo on hand for those who prefer it, and will use it myself if the MW is all gone.

Speaking of squirrels, we're going to have a blessed event, apparently. I just saw one of the females out back, and she looks about ready to pop. Just what I need - more squirrels! No, actually I'm happy. They're such fun to watch.

Something about being "family friendly." Nope, don't miss it at all, not at all.

Folks, I had an email from TOM. He says he hasn't had a chance to get on the porch, but sent word to everyone. His sister is doing well, and is able to drive again, as her arm is healing nicely. His SIL is just waiting to hear whether her treatments have worked on her tumor. Now their older brother is in the hospital with a heart attack. That family has been hit hard. GF--I'm still trying to locate a water pump for the '65 VW! Ha

July 27, 2014 - Msg 98584: Yep, MDC Those water pumps are harder to find than a "redheaded furry tailed" snipe on a cloudy Saturday night!

We had bad storms last night but everything is quiet and calm now. Yes, there is joy in the morning....

I think I going to pick a bunch of my green cherry tomatoes and make some "fried green matter poppers" since the squirrels won't let them be to get ripe! I suppose they will sit in the tree with their little forks waiting for some of them too! (I may slip in a habanero one in just to heat them up!) Yep, They'll have JOY in the morning! (wonder if Rocky the flying squirrel was fueled that way?) Coulda been....

MDC, to answer your question from Msg 98582, according to the link I posted below, "members of the American College of Surgeons are referred to as "Fellows." The letters FACS (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after a surgeon's name mean that the surgeon's education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation, and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College.

MDC, I also don't remember Dragonfly even though I have been posting here since 1996 off and on. I guess it must have been during some of my absences.
The last time Dragonfly posted here was July 4, 2009 with a single posting. And previous to that was in June 2007 with multiple postings. Welcome back Dragonfly.

I also offer prayers for our TOM and his family.

I just discovered a funny video over at YouTube. It shows us how some of our world leaders relax. Although the video primarily features the leader of North Korea, you will also see leaders of other countries. See if you can identify them.

I also read in the news that Ron Howard (our beloved Opie) and his wife are downsizing and recently sold their country estate for a record $27.5 million. And the unnamed buyer paid cash! The property taxes alone are $191,149 each year! To view the exterior and interior of the property, visit http://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/westchester/2014/07/25/ron-howard-sells-armonk-home/13151329/

July 27, 2014 - Msg 98592: Good evening porch! checking in from my end of the porch.
We have had some bad storms this afternoon, wind, golf ball size hail, and lots of rain. A tornado went thru some of the communities close to us. Lots of damage in places.

Happy Birthday to Mrs. Martha tomorrow

Hope everyone is safe and sound .

July 27, 2014 - Msg 98593: Good evening, porch! Wow, PH, that house that Opie just sold is something else! I don't mean to sound like sour grapes here, but how on earth does one "live" in a house like that? I mean, it's absolutely beautiful, but it looks like a movie set. How do you kick back in a favorite old chair, with a sandwich and a glass of tea and a good book? How would I let Toye Starr hop up on that furniture? Does Mrs. Opie ever have to clean up the kitchen, or does she just sit around and look pretty? It's just a way of life that's so completely foreign to me. Ha! Who am I kidding? I'd just love to try that for a while!! I wonder if they have squirrels that eat the leaves off their potato vines?

There's a big yellow butterfly with black borders around his wings, that floats around in my backyard for hours, almost every day. He's huge, about the size of the palm of my hand, and is just gorgeous. He just floats and drifts, and visits various flowers, and looks like a flying flower himself. Or herself. Anyway, sure is a pretty thing. If he's out there tomorrow, maybe I can get a picture. Surely would love to know what kind he is, and what his host plants are.

Well, it's suppertime, but I'm not very hungry. I may just make some guacamole from a good avocado I've got, and finish off with some cherries. I don't know how it's been where you all are, but the cherries we've had around here have been wonderful. Big old things, sweet and firm, and less than $2 a pound. We've even had some of those wonderful Rainer cherries. Now, they're a bit more pricey, but I still get a few of them. They are SO good! The dark sweets have been wonderful, though, better than I've seen them in several years and reasonably priced.

Oh, and I found limes yesterday for 13 cents each, and they're big, with thin skins and lots of juice. I don't know where they're from, but they're good. Got to have limes! What's guacamole without lots of lime juice in it? Believe it or not, I got those limes at the Braum's ice cream store, in their little grocery section. The cherries, too. I shop in there quite often, and skip the hassle of the big grocery stores. They're great, if you just need a few things, and the prices are good.

OK, off I go. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

July 27, 2014 - Msg 98594: Hey, Maude! Glad you're okay, and the weather didn't do you any harm.

GF--Maybe Marilyn Grayson bought the house! :)
And yes, we have had quite a few dust storms this season!
Glad you are OK Maudie. Some people here are still without power after last evening's duststorm
BOO--has Sean found a new job yet?
Happy birthday Martha!
Prayers,
MDC

July 28, 2014 - Msg 98596: Howdy, porch. MDC, I hate to appear so dumb, but just how does a dust storm take out the power? Are the winds that strong with a duster? Around here, the only thing that knocks out the power would be high winds or ice, and I'm just pretty darn sure you didn't have any ice! That just leaves strong wind. When we have a duster here (nothing like you all get, I know) it just sort of rolls in, not generally much wind associated with it. There's some, of course, but not enough to knock out the power lines. Just curious....

I had an interesting supper. A small bowl of guacamole, from one avocado, some baked chips, and finished off with some fresh cherries and a couple of slices of swiss cheese. I had planned on having mozzarella, but it had been in the fridge too long and was breaking down, kinda mushy. Trashed it. Too bad, I love mozzarella. The swiss was good with the cherries, though. I love fruit and cheese together.

Well, guess I'll do an online jigsaw puzzle, and then hit the hay. I love jigsaw puzzles, and have really enjoyed the online kind. No little bitty pieces everywhere, don't have to put it away when the kids come over, Toye Starr can't chew up a dropped piece, just lots of advantages. Also, on the site I'm playing on right now, I can create my own puzzles, using pictures from my own photo files. It's fun to work a puzzle and see my own fish pond appear, or a pretty iris, or Toye Starr's little face. I love computers! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Well I gotta go to the store to get some grub, all 3 of the GrandKidders are coming over for a few days. I have to stock up on some Pop Tarts, Yuk! They are like eating cardboard with jam in between, but they like em'... Sometimes they eat like birds and some times they eat me dry, I never know until they get here. Kids now a days figure if it doesn't come in a bag or a box it ain't food, but at Grandpa Airplane's place I still cook real food!....Just ask Opie, "Prunes & Grits" haha... They do like my "creative" cooking, think we'll have turkey & blue mashed potatoes and green beans out of the garden, maybe some Georgia watermelon too! Better Roll....

G-F....

July 28, 2014 - Msg 98599: Wow, G-F, I think I'll come have lunch with you! Sounds delish. I know what you're saying about the kids' food preferences. I make a mean mac and cheese, but my grandsons prefer the boxed Kraft kind. Nasty stuff, if you ask me. That fakey-looking orange color is the first clue that it's not the real thing, but they love it. I'll admit though, as they're getting older (10 and 13 now) they're willing to try new things most of the time and usually find they like it pretty well. They eat like birds too - vultures! Eloise's little grand-grand (age 4) is still in the "eeewww" stage, however, and never really just eats, she wants to nibble constantly.

It's gonna be another hot one today. It's already 88°, at 9:40 a.m. I'd like to just stay in the a/c all day, but I can't. Got to go to the audiologist for more adjustment on my hearing aids, pick up some prescriptions, go to the grocery store, and make a home health visit. Argh. Guess I'd better get moving.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

July 28, 2014 - Msg 98600: That's "great-grand", not grand-grand. Bet you knew what I meant, though. --Romeena

July 28, 2014 - Msg 98601: Romeena, I know what your are saying about the mac & cheese, growing up Mom usually made her own but she usually made it from Swiss cheese and baked it until it's golden on top. My Dad liked his Swiss cheese so sharp it would put hair on Mr. Cleans head! My sisters still make it when we all get together, but Mom's was still better. (wonder what causes that) haha... Funny thing, Mom was a great cook, except she could not make good chili...not a lick! I never knew what good chili was until I left home. I bet even Barneys hot plate chili was better.. But I will give her a mulligan on it, even Aunt Bee had her problems with the pickles....
Off to fight the WalMartians... :(

July 28, 2014 - Msg 98604: Thank you for your kind "welcome back". It's nice to chat with nice folks. I went through a few of the tougher kinda' times and, in the meantime, have married a wonderful lady from the Boston area. Betwixt us we have five kiddos ranging from 19 to 38 and (count 'em) 12 grand-kiddos. If I'd known how much fun grandchildren were I'd have had 'em first.

Traveling quite a bit around Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas for work. I've also been in Toronto, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and some points in between with two more trips on the books to the San Francisco area. Sometimes hard to be a regular poster with the schedule but would appreciate the opportunity to participate without being a "lurker".

Prayers for all who need 'em and blessings to all.

Prayer request, please friends. My dear cousin Danny is a type one diabetic (juvenile onset) and is very sick. He is in his thirties now, divorced and disabled, living with his mother (my closest aunt..her name is Linda). Danny is in ICU on a ventilator in a coma right now. Some things are looking a bit improved but he certainly is not out of the woods yet. His poor mama is a widow and having a very tough time right now. Danny has been very depressed and had lost his will to live during the last year. He had not been eating and had been refusing medical treatment. My aunt had been afraid to sleep while he was at home because she knew this was coming. I talked to her tonight and it just broke my heart..of course she is concerned about me and im concerned about here and we are just a mess. We are depending upon the Lord, though, and praying! I'll appreciate it if you feel led to pray for them.

ROMEENa-- Our dust storms can get pretty fierce with what are called micro bursts or microcells, which are sudden hurricane-like winds that last a few seconds in areas, but they can snap power poles and snap trees ONTO power lines, thus causing the outages. Here's one from a few days ago:
