February 21, 2013 - Msg 92548: Gosh, you are so lucky, MDC. I think we have had about the warmest winter I ever remember here in south texas. It is going to be in the 80s here today. I am dreading summer like you can't believe! We have been in a drought for so long and no signs of that changing.

Thanks, Ro. Bruce sent her a simple, short, and to the point email last night. I hope she is ablet to understand it. It hink it might be a little above her head.

Really? Obama is trotting off to Hawaii and it is costing that much? He must be very wealthy, or are we paying for his vacations?

February 21, 2013 - Msg 92549: Snow MDC? Are you sure it wasn't something else? lol
We are getting just a few flurries this morning, but the bulk of this one went south of us. And that's a-ok with me. Another one is due in on Saturday that is supposed to be bigger. But the longer term forecast shows a warming trend for us. Well it is almost March for Petes sake. It should be getting warmer. We haven't seen 48 in months I think MDC. It was so very nice Saturday. I went and looked at my thermometer thinking it had to be in the low 50's at least. HA! 36. But it sure felt good from the deep freeze we have had this winter.

Speaking of Emergency, wasn't the nurse on that show married to Jack Webb in real life? Seems like I remember reading that somewhere. I don't even remember her name. She had longer blondish hair. But it was a good show. I always enjoyed that, and Dragnet, and Adam-12.

February 21, 2013 - Msg 92550:
Asa, I did some research and discovered that Julie London, who played Nurse Dixie McCall on Emergency, was married to Jack Webb between 1947 and 1954. She was also married to Bobby Troup, one of the doctors on Emergency, between 1959 and 1999.
Click on http://www.peoplequiz.com/images/quizzes/emergency.jpg-3791.jpg to view the cast of Emergency. That's Julie in the middle and her second husband with the white coat and light colored hair. Julie London was a professional singer and her second husband, Bobby Troup, was a musician. In fact, he wrote the song Route 66 that Nat King Cole had a hit with back in 1946.

February 21, 2013 - Msg 92555: Good morning, porch. It's a pretty day here, though a bit chilly at 48°, but it's warming up. Sorry, all you cold-weather folks. I don't mean to be rubbing it in. The truth is, Boo and I are secretly (not so secretly, maybe) envious of your snow. We would love it, but it's not gonna happen around here, at least not in any appreciable quantities. Oh well.

Well, in the last fifteen minutes, while I was playing with Toye Starr, my "pretty" day has turned gray, cloudy and drizzly. A damp, dispirited-looking squirrel and one forlorn bird are nosing around the wet feeding stones, trying to find something edible in the soggy remains of some bread I put out yesterday. Guess I'll go put out some old shelled walnuts I found in the fridge. It won't matter if they're wet, and everybody loves them. Oh, a whole flock of doves just came in, over a dozen of them. Maybe I'll add some cracked corn to those walnuts. The doves think cracked corn is manna from heaven.

Guess I'd better go. I've been putting off a lot of chores, and need to catch up a little. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

So the nurse was married to Jack Webb, and then later to Bobby Troup. I remember that now that you mentioned it. I don't know that I ever heard Julie London sing, but I can remember she did have that sultry voice Ro. I bet she was a good singer.

Speaking of Jack Webb, if you have never seen the skit he did with Johnny Carson, you have to look that one up on youtube. The one with the copper clappers. Hilarious.

Well MDC, by golly did you go make snowballs or anything?

Sure is interesting when they get serious about budget cutting, they go for the throat. The threats of police and fireman that will be gone. How about the gazillions they waste on stupidity. Such as a current study of video games played by the elderly, and how it affects them. Seriously? This is needed at this time when our nation is on the verge of economic collapse? Ro....The name of the new cd is going to be called "Front Porch Praise". Got some really fun songs on this cd. Got one song on here called "Drive Through The Country" that mentions some of the places that I travel to throughout the year and yes Texas is on it. It's going to be a cool song to do in my concerts. The song that I wrote for Erica's wedding is turning out unreal....everyone in the studio is going crazy over this song. I am putting it on the cd as well. Then I went a different direction from anything that I have ever done by writing a "funny" song called "That's My Pew". Even though it's a "funny" song it came from a true story that happened to us on a concert tour in AZ (sorry MDC...lol). Wrote just for fun some years ago and never planned to record it but played it for some studio folks and they talked me into recording it.

Race fans....the big one kicks off this weekend....let the checkered flag wave and let'm crank it up!

OK gang....I'm gonna try and get some rest. You all have a great day and night!

I liked Danica at one time fellers, but her association with Go Daddy has kinda soured me on her I guess. The commercials I see them run on T.V. are just not right in my thinking. But most folks would call me a prude. Oh well, so be it.

So is it just me, or was that Copper Clapper skit hilarious? Everytime I watch it I get a good laugh. Partly because it is nice to see Jack Webb in a comedy sketch (so out of character for him) and partly because I think Johnny Carson was a great comedian. February 23, 2013 - Msg 92587: OK, with all this "gopher guts" talk, I just have to share this little story.

When my oldest son was in the second grade, I received a call from his teacher, asking that I come to the school that afternoon, to discuss a matter that was too delicate to be covered on the phone. Well, you can imagine what all went through my mind. I waited until my son was home (we lived a block from the school) then asked my neighbor to watch him and his sister, and I headed for the school.

When I entered, the grim-faced young teacher asked me to be seated. She said we had to discuss the matter of my son's language. This was a shock, as neither Dale nor I used rough language, and were teaching our children that it wasn't appropriate, so I asked her what on earth he had said. She looked around, as though fearing the walls had ears, and finally managed to stammer out this shocking sentence: "He said 'fried worms!" I guess I looked a bit blank, because she added - "at the lunch table!" I was still just blinking at her, I guess, because she said, "Don't you understand? He said those words at the lunch table! In front of everyone! I couldn't even finish my lunch!" I finally caught on, arranged my expression into one of proper horror, and quickly assured her that we would deal with him at home and would do our best to ensure that it never happened again. She seemed relieved, and I got out of there as quickly as I could, raced to my car and once safely enclosed, I sat there and laughed like an idiot.

Before dinner, I let Dale in on the situation, and we handled it at the dinner table. Before we could bring it up, our son gave us the perfect opening. We were having fried chicken, and he proceeded to favor us with his version of the Shake'n'Bake commercial, the part where the little kid says, "It's not fried, it's baked!" His version was "It's not fried chicken, it's fried worms!" Much delighted laughter from him and his sister, of course. Dale asked him where he heard that, and he said he made it up at lunch, because they were having Shake'n'Bake chicken. He said the other kids were "laughing sooo hard!" I asked whether the teacher thought it was funny, and he said he didn't think so, because she made him go sit at a table by himself! So, we explained that some people are very sensitive, and might be offended by such a concept as fried worms, especially during a meal, and would he please not do that again? He promised, and that was the end of it.

As I recall, that teacher didn't have children, and if God is merciful, she never did. I don't know who would have been more miserable, the teacher or any children she might have had. --Romeena

February 23, 2013 - Msg 92588: Good thing you could hold it until you got out to the car, Romeena. I don't know if I could have and I might have laughed in her face, out of the sheer ridiculousness of it AND the relief I would have had knowing my kid hadn't used much more inappropriate language.

February 23, 2013 - Msg 92589: Good story Romeena, and good on you in containing yourself in front of her. She must have been a greenie in teaching I imagine if that comment upset her so bad. I bet a year later after interacting with kids she probably was quite different.

She made him eat the whole mess! Kinda harsh, I thought. hehe

I was looking at my beautiful landscape roses that are blooming and are the color of deep pink..so lovely and before you know it the heat will wilt them again. :(

Bruce worked today but Erin and i went to preaching. Sean was pooped out from the last few days. I think he has decided to try and start a little business of his own doing car detailing. He detailed the insides, shampooed carpets and seats, even and used a buffer to polish the finishes, even shined all the chrome. February 24, 2013 - Msg 92600: Good afternoon, porch. Mr. Tom, thanks for the beautiful poem. Such reassuring words, so encouraging.

Boo, I know what you mean. We didn't have much of a winter here, either. I have crocuses blooming, tiny little drops of gold, their little heads just about two inches above the soil line. So sweet. At the same time, I have daffodils, hyacinths, irises and anemones blooming. Those are not necessarily "bloom together" plants! The seasons are all mixed up around here. I'm ready to get seasonal color in the ground, but am afraid of it, because the mesquite trees haven't shown any leaf color yet, and until they do, anything can happen. Once I see that pale green haze on those trees, I'll be at the garden center, getting some pansies and a lot of snapdragons, and a little later, some petunias. My roses are bursting with fresh red leaves, after being pruned down to about a foot high. It won't be long until they'll be four-foot bushes, covered with blooms again. The azaleas and hydrangeas will come to life again too, the pretty things. All of that will last a couple of months, then the murderous heat will set in, and everybody will be struggling. The only salvation for them is lots of water, and many times, even that won't do it. The heat just blasts them.

I wish Sean could detail my car! It needs it, and I'd sure rather pay him than the car dealership. He'd probably do a better job, too. Detailing really helps. I had it done a couple of years ago, and it looked like a new car.

Eloise and I went to the Fair Park theater today, to see the Dallas Summer Musicals' production of "Catch Me if You Can." Very, very good! What a story - and to think it's a true story. Wow. For Christmas, David and Brittney gave us each tickets to four of the productions this summer, and this was the first one. Next, in March, we'll see "Mary Poppins", and in the fall we'll see "Sister Act" and "The Lion King." D&B are so creative when it comes to gifts for us. You'll remember that they gave us tickets to see the Lipizzaner stallions perform in Waco a few years ago. Wow! That was some show, and we had a wonderful time. Those kids are very creative, and very generous. God is good.

Well, I'm pooped. I've been invited out for dinner with a group tonight, but think I won't go. I'm ready to get in my chair, with Toye Starr in my lap and Bentley snoozing alongside. There's just no place like home. Blessings, friends. --Romeena

February 25, 2013 - Msg 92604: Well NASCAR porch fans yesterdays race was a good start to the season. #55 "Old man River" Martin is still showing those youngsters how it's done, 3rd place is still good. He is the hero of everyone of us over 50 that we can still get-r-done...

Good to see TOM back rockin, I think he's been busy watching those Indians in spring training?

REV, Good to hear your project is coming in May. It's cutting it close with the HUD inspector he usually starts in April, maybe I can hold him off until then, or drive him down "Little Chapel Road" in the mean time....

My home computer is on the fritz so I'll check in from time to time @ work (don't tell!)...

February 25, 2013 - Msg 92605: Morning porch, hope everybody is up and ready for the day. It's gonna be Monday all day long.

not much to report from my end of the porch today.
cold and cloudy outside, rain expected for tonight.

I noticed some of my tulips and daffodils are popping up so spring is hopefully on its way.

well, everyone have a Mayberry kinda day.
lunch at my place today: tomato soup, grilled bacon, cheese and tomato sandwhiches. little debbie oatmeal creme pies for dessert.

Prayers and blessings to all.

February 25, 2013 - Msg 92607: I replied to one of your emails, Ro, and asked you a question as well. I have since gone ahead and signed up with blogger though(I am following your blog on there as well), but you can still reply if you'd like.

Well, got to go take Kai over to the middle school for her band practice.

Did anyone watch the Oscars last night? If you did, did you notice that in the video tribute to all of the film industry people who passed away in 2012, Andy Griffith and George Lindsey were not mentioned? Both had experience working in cinema films and television movies.

from Poor Horatio

February 25, 2013 - Msg 92609: I saw something about that on the Yahoo homepage when I passed by it. There was a picture of Andy.
But no, I didn't watch the Oscars. I never watch awards shows. There are way too many of them.
Them Hollywood types sure do like to pat themselves on the back a lot, don't they?!

-Sterling Holobyte

February 25, 2013 - Msg 92610:
Sterling Holobyte, I'm with you. I also don't care for those award programs because most of the people and movies/shows I am not familiar with. I just happened to be in the same room working on my computer as my wife watched the Oscars. When I heard the memorial tribute start, that is when I began to pay attention.

from Poor Horatio

February 25, 2013 - Msg 92611: Me either...I never go to the movies unless it is to see the rare kid's movie my kids want to see. Bruce can't hear the dialogue so we never go see "grown-up" movies and there is enough on television anyway.

Boy is the wind ever blowing here! I went out to check on the critters and I felt like I was in the movie, "The Grapes of Wrath". With all the sand out here it looks like the dust bowl all over again. I had to shut the windows because sand was getting all over the floors. Crazy!

February 25, 2013 - Msg 92614: Good evening, porch. Sterling, I got your email and sent a response. Obviously you didn't get it. I'm going to re-send it. Let me know if it still doesn't come through. I'll do it as soon as I leave the porch. This is getting a bit annoying. Obviously there's something wrong with my email, and now my son just told me he hasn't been able to get a phone call through either. Says it just clicks and disconnects. I think The Count must be around.

I never watch the Oscars, because I've never seen any of the movies, and could not possibly care any less who wins that little statue. As Andy said, "I don't even care SOME!"

Well, Toye Starr and Bentley are standing here, staring at me with big Orphan Annie eyes, like they're starving. If I move at all, other than my hands, they come to attention, convinced I'm getting up to feed them. Guess I'd better go do that before they develop ulcers. Neither of them has ever missed a meal, but they seem to fear that it just could happen. Spoiled little things. Ya gotta love 'em!

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

February 25, 2013 - Msg 92615: Folks, I had one big mess to clean today after this wind storm. I had all the windows open when it blew in, and when I say it blew in, I mean IN! Sand on the floors, window sills, kitchen counters, kitchen table. Unreal! We have been vacuuming and cleaning trying to get all this sand out. I sure hope this never happens again. I have 10 windows across the back of the house that face north and they were ALL open, unfortunately....my bedroom floor was even sandy. yuk.

Break over.

February 26, 2013 - Msg 92616:
RO- did you try burying a burlap bag under an old oak tree? ha
I DID get ONE response about PB's address, but not two. Strange indeed. thanks.
Maudie, my wife's daffodils and tulips are also starting to bloom!
I used to watch the Oscars years ago when all the attire was proper, as well as the thank yous.
But I just cant "get into them" anymore. And now after the
Andy snub, I think that will be it.
Well NASCAR at PIR this coming week! Should be 80 on Sunday, so ya all come by, ya hear! (:
Prayers,

February 26, 2013 - Msg 92617: Thanks Ro, I did get your message this time.
I think it is funny that you didn't even know you were on Google Blogger. :)

Sorry about your own hurricane "sandy", Boo(sorry for the bad and possibly inappropriate pun). Maybe you could put down some towels and pretend you are camping out on the beach or something.
Don't mean to make too light about it. I am sure it was a lot of work cleaning that all up.

February 26, 2013 - Msg 92618: Hi, all. Just passing by. Have been doing some resetting and unplugging and replugging of devices around here, trying to fix my phone issues. I have the Vonage phone thing, which of course runs through the computer. With a wi-fi router thrown into the mix, things get sticky sometimes. I just reset everybody, but haven't tested it yet to see if it works. I did try earlier to call my home number from my cell phone, and as my son said, it just rings once and disconnects. My internet on my smart phone isn't working either, presumably because the wi-fi isn't functioning. I think I'm narrowing the problem down. I'll test it in a little while and see if it's working. Funny part is, I can call out on my land line just fine. It just cuts off incoming calls. Weird.

Well, it's late. I'll go test things, then toddle off to bed. Boo, I'm sorry about that sandy mess. Many years ago, a huge dust storm blew through Waco when we were living there, and we weren't at home. Had left windows open though, and walked into a colossal mess when we got home that evening. So, you have my sympathy. Wish I could help you clean it up.

Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

February 26, 2013 - Msg 92619: MDC, Save me a spot at the race on Sunday, maybe a little higher up in the stands tho....

Today is Grand Daughter B-day I got her 2 hermit crabs (Barney & Thelma Lou) and a cool habitat, she's been wanting them so...Papa had to oblidge! Barney hangs out at the crab pond & Thelma Lou climbs the palm tree. I think she's trying to send Barney a message?

Dust storms? Anything like a snow storm? Especially the kind when the snow is frozen into little balls of ice and they sting as they hit.
I guess the blowing sands hurts too.

Frankie, Red Lobster?..I'll bring the crabs..haha

G-F....

February 26, 2013 - Msg 92620: Thanks for the sympathy, friends! :) The sand and dust mess really wasn't so bad. Sean cleaned all the floors..first with a vacuum and then with his Floor Mate, which is like a mop with suction. I did the cleaning on top of things like tables and counters. I did have to change the sheets on my bed because there was actually sand in it! Oh well, all's well that ends well. The weatherman did say that we had 50 to 60 mph winds here all day. St. Susan's backyard fence blew down and landed on her back porch!

Feeling a little overwhelmed this morning. It seems like my "to do" list is so long it will take forever to finish it all...and not just the short term list...things like making dentist appointments for the kids (Erin needs braces), check ups, well...won't bore you with the list.
Better finish the coffee and get moving...

I'll just say pink is for girls and blue is for boys and leave it at that..haha

Sometime I'll tell you guys how to tell a female from a male turtle..By my Dad's method, he always had a blast showing people how. ;)

February 26, 2013 - Msg 92623:
RO-We just recently about two weeks ago) had the EXACT same thing happen with our landline. We were still using the original buried line from 30 years ago, and
we could call out just fine, but anyone calling in would just get one ring and then the "hang up."
I called the phone co. They came out and put in a "temporary" above ground wire from the box in the alley to our phone box on the side of the house, and all is now good. They are scheduled to come out next week and bury it, now that they know it is working ok. So that mught be your problem also. Just sayin'.
MDC

February 26, 2013 - Msg 92624: Try to do one thing at a time, Boo.

Romeena, have you put your problem into a search engine on the computer? Just put some keywords like "Vonage", "disconnecting", "Wi-Fi"; stuff like that. Or you can even try to put it in as a whole question. But you may find someone who has the same exact problem which they posted to a help site, and possibly a solution as well. I do that all the time when something doesn't work around here.

February 26, 2013 - Msg 92625: Thanks Sterling. I ended having a pretty good day. I made my list and was able to cross off a couple of things already. I cleaned out my homeschooling drawer and discarded old materials and found some great curriculum that I had forgotten about that I can let Erin use. She is pretty bored with what she has been using. I formulted some lesson plans from the new material and even did some laundry. Things are looking up. :)

The weather today is amazing! The sun is shining and it is dry and cool...and the best part...NO WIND! :) I think I will treat the kids to a trip to Sonic at happy hour to get a slush or something. Anyone wanna come along?

I have a request for prayer today. You all probably remember my friend Alan who was here for a visit recently and became engaged to my friend Teresa? Well, things were moving too fast and Teresa has back out. It is probably for the best because they both have alot of "baggage" but they are both sweet people and I am hoping that maybe, given some time, things might still work out. I just talked to poor Alan and he is heartbroken. Please say a prayer for them today. Thanks.

Better go put some clothes in the dryer...

February 26, 2013 - Msg 92626: Good evening, porch, I spent most of the day out at Saginaw with David. His car is in the shop, Brittney was gone for the day and poor Bentley needed a ride home. So I took him home, and then David and I went to a terrific Chinese buffet for lunch. The nicest thing happened there. The waitress came over and told David that our meal had been paid for! She indicated a couple of women at a table across the room. David recognized one of them as a neighbor, so he went over to thank her. She was most gracious, and just said she wanted to do something for him, because he helps them out a lot. He has taken her husband to work when his car wasn't running, he put up their Christmas lights, fixed their a/c when it was broken, at no charge - just things like that. They're an older couple, and the man has early Parkinson's disease, so my sweet son tries to help them when he can. Still it was very nice of her to pay for our meal.

MDC, my phone line is with Vonage, which runs through the computer. If I understand correctly, it doesn't use the actual phone lines, though I do have some coming into the house from when I was with Verizon. I wish our utilities were buried, but they're not. Everything is overhead. I'll be calling them tomorrow - got home too late tonight to do it.'

Sterling, that's a good idea, to do a search on the problem. I'll probably do that too. I have solved a few other problems with that little trick. It can all wait until tomorrow, though. Tonight I have a story to write, as I promised Charlotte Tucker.

Boo, I'm glad the sandy mess wasn't any worse than that. I'm sorry the relationship between Alan and Teresa didn't work out, but as you say, maybe it still will, after a little time. Maybe they just need time to think.

Well, off I go. See you all in the morning. --Romeena

Still having trouble with my email. My phone seems to have healed itself. After not working for two days, this morning it works. Very weird. The email, however, is very erratic. I don't get everything that's sent to me, and a lot of what I send doesn't reach its destination. Very annoying.

Charlotte Tucker, I sent you the story. Did you receive it? Let me know if you didn't, and I'll try again. If all else fails, there's always snail mail.

Oh RO, one more thing, have you had any rain lately? I ask because ours was really bad during and after a rainstorm, and a couple days later it would be OK.
