August 08, 2012 - Msg 89720: I just found out from the children of my deceased friend Karen, that their Dad's melenoma has spread and things don't look good. I don't have all the details yet but I am very concerned. Zach is about to leave for Baylor in a week and his dad is paying his tuition. I don't know if Zach will have to postpone or what will happen. Right now it is hard to bear the thought of seeing these great kids lose another parent so early in life. It is bringing back very painful feelings from what we went through with Karen's passing. Please remember Zach (18)and Allison (12) and their dad. They have a stepmom that Allison is close to but Zach isn't. He will turn to me for support like last time. Thank you for your prayers.

Good Luck Boo on your party....Game ideas: Pin the tail on the Donkey? Red rover let Bernie come over? Elvis could sing: Baaaa-d to the Bone & Baaaa-ck in the saddle again..Just a thought!

Romeena, last night I was sitting out on my front porch and guess what? I got bite by a mosquito! Guess my bats were full last night, I guess I will have to order more from Asa?..G-F..

August 09, 2012 - Msg 89726: G-F...we are not pinning a tail on Thelma Lou! She would be a very grumpy donkey if we did. :) We no longer have Elvis. He is living on a goat farm in San Antonio now and has a full-time job as a stud. I'm certain he is very happy in his new job and as impressive looking as he was, I am sure he will help produce some very cute kids. :)

Wonder how Ro did with her procedure yesterday?...hope she checks in soon.

Boo

August 09, 2012 - Msg 89727: Good morning, porch! Boo, you're so sweet to be concerned about that little old thing yesterday. With all the real trouble here on the porch, I feel a little silly even mentioning it. Anyway, to answer your question, turns out it's not a lipoma, it's an epidermal inclusion cyst, usually not a problem, unless they get inflamed. Apparently this one has, probably from me lying around so much, putting pressure on it. The doc wouldn't remove it, as he said it's very deep and a lot larger than it appears on the surface. He said removal would mean about a three-inch incision, under light anesthesia and he won't do it in the office. So he started me on antibiotics, and said most of the time that solves it. The thing cools down, subsides and basically goes dormant again. Suits me. I've had about all the anesthesia I want for now. So I'm taking Amoxil and hoping the thing quiets down. Sure is sore, though.

G-F, you are a caution. What did we do before you came to the porch? You make us laugh! Well, since Boo won't let us pin a tail on Thelma Lou, I wonder if she would mind if we tied one on her? I've heard of someone being as proud as a peac@ck with two tails, I wonder how a donkey would feel about it? She sure could give flies a fit, I'll bet.

Well, my helper will be here soon to help me get this house somewhere near clean. It pains me to have to pay someone to do what I should be doing myself, but right now, I just can't. Also, Eddie will be here to mow, and I'm sitting here in front of my big old window, in a ratty old gown, with my hair sticking up everywhere and no makeup on. If he or his helper walk into the back yard, I'll scare them to death! Guess I'd better go get dressed.

Thinking of Spot and Miss Sherry this morning, prayers as always. God bless them! --Romeena

August 09, 2012 - Msg 89728: That sounds like the right plan, Ro (concerning the cyst). I have a few of those, myself and they never seem to bother me. I still have that silly wrist cyst but it stays small and rarely gets inflamed.

When will you be headed to south texas?

August 09, 2012 - Msg 89733: When is the wedding actually going to take place, Ro? On Friday evening or on Saturday?

Boo

August 09, 2012 - Msg 89734: On Saturday evening. We have a barbecue on Friday evening. I'm thinking that Friday, early afternoon, may be what works out for us, if it works for y9u. Not being familiar with the "lay of the land" around there, and hearing something about a two-hour wait for a ferry to get to Port A, or an hour's drive around Corpus, I'm thinking that Amanda may want to take us to her house after she picks us up at the airport, and we'll come visit you at the same time, and then go on to the island. Will that work for you? Again I stress - this is my thinking, and I haven't run it by Amanda yet. She's at work, but I should be able to talk with her soon. I'll be in touch. --Romeena

August 10, 2012 - Msg 89735: Anything is fine with me, Ro. I'm not sure about the ferry. I know if you fly into Corpus and come here you don't take a ferry. It is a fairly quick trip to Aransas Pass...probably about 30 minutes. Now from here to Port Aransas, cross the ferry, so if the barbecue is in Port A, then you might have a long wait crossing the ferry to get there, or as you mentioned you may have to drive back into Corpus and then through padre island to get to Port A. That would take about an hour, I estimate...maybe a little longer. This time of year the ferry lines can get very long and many people choose the route through Corpus. Anyway, Godspeed! Hope to see you.

She felt just terrible about it but I didn't want her to feel bad. She just didn't know. She promised me that she would be coming back to visit her granddaughter here soon and we would have time to spend together. She told me to give the kids a hug and give a sugar lump to Thelma Lou for her, so I will do that. :) I did really want to see her but certainly understand why it wasn't possible for her on this trip. MDC- You & GF have got it right. After reading your post about your Dad I wanted to watch "Saving Private Ryan" last night. I know it's just a movie, but my goodness. There's a quote at the end of the movie that made me think of your father and his Generation. It was given by the, much older, present day Private Ryan visiting a Allied Military Cemetery in France and kneeling at his Sergent's grave. "My family is with me today. They wanted to come with me. To be honest with you, I wasn't sure how I'd feel coming back here. Every day I think about what you said to me that day on the bridge. I tried to live my life the best that I could. I hope that was enough. I hope that, at least in your eyes, I've earned what all of you have done for me." Well, what made me think of your Dad is that here's this guy (Ryan) who served and lived a long and good and productive life. Yet, he wondered if he should have done more. I not sure I made myself clear or if that made any sense at all. Prayers to you also buddy.

August 13, 2012 - Msg 89788: Tom, that's just beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing it, I think it will help all of us, including Spot. There is a great deal of wisdom, truth and comfort in that poem.

MDC, prayers continue for your dad, and for you as you walk through this valley. It's tough, and sometimes the "woods are dark and deep", but we know that joy comes in the morning.

I'm home now, had a wonderful weekend, got to see many friends and family that I don't get to see very much. Robbi and Richard were married at 8pm, down on the beach, with the breakers rolling in behind them, and the seagulls calling overhead. There were still a few little sandpipers running around, and the whole scene was just so natural and beautiful. No fanfare, nothing fancy, just a group of friends and family gathered on the beach to watch them exchange their vows. They had provided chairs for Richard's mom and sister, and for me and Eloise. Everyone else just stood in the sand, most of us barefoot. They gave Richard's mom and me each a beautiful sculptured metal rose, very unique and so pretty. It was all very simple, very casual, and just beautiful.

Mission accomplished, Possum. I'll be emailing everyone in just a minute. To everyone - if I have your email address, you'll be receiving one from me shortly. If you don't, it's because I don't have your address. If you would like me to have it, you can write me at: my porch name at the abbreviation for Texas dot Roy Rogers initials dot com. There, that should confuse the web-crawlers. Just do what it says and put it all together.

Now I have a suitcase to unpack and a puppy to cuddle. Two puppies, actually. David and Brittney were at the wedding, of course, and they're taking a few days and making a little vacation of it with Landry and Hudson. They're going to stop in San Antonio for a couple of days and do the fun stuff there, won't be home until Thursday night. Poor old Bentley was left at home, with a neighbor coming in to feed him and let him out. I don't know why we didn't think of him coming to stay with Toye Starr and Deanna, but we didn't. Anyway, when we got in last night, Eloise and I drove out there and picked him up, so he's staying with me until his family gets home. To make matters worse for him, a storm had knocked out the power in their area, so the poor thing was stuck in a hot, pitch-black house. He was really glad to see us! He's such a good boy, just no trouble at all to keep. He has much better manners than Toye Starr, at times. He loves her, and is so good to her, and she loves him too. They look like Mutt and Jeff, but they play together very well. He's very careful with her, and though he's literally ten times her size, he never hurts her.

Well, better get moving around here. Got a doctor appointment at 1:45 and it's nearly noon now. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

SPOT, thank you for taking the time to post an update. We all do appreciate it.

MDC, I always have a high regard for anyone who takes care of a parent the way you do. The best part is that you are doing this at a time when they are able to appreciate it. I will remember your father in prayer.

TOM, your posting is just what SPOT, MDC and the rest of us need. Thank you for those comforting words.

Romeena, I loved reading about Toye Starr. She seems to have the perfect companion and playmate in Bentley. Any chance of these visits from becoming a more common occurrence?

Hi all, had a long week-end shoveling mud and working with a fella from my church getting my water-heater going, but my heat pump is going to have to be replaced. Send some prayers to help me get the financing I need. No homeowners.I'm not sure yet if it was county or state that built a new bridge and put storm drains in but that's where my flooding comes in.I've lived in this house all my life and never flooded till this. My home was left to me by my parents. So,I really need to have prayers for some help.

August 14, 2012 - Msg 89800: Good Morning porch.

Spot, so good to hear from you friend, and am glad your spirits seem up. I'm sure today will be a tough one, but you got a lot of folks praying for you buddy. We love ya buddy.

SalGal, I pray for your situation. Both for the finances to kick in for the needed repairs, and for a resolution to remedy future flooding problems. Document everything, with dates and times. And the statistic on air bags is interesting. About 10 years ago my wife T-Boned a car that had run a stop sign. She is all of 5 ft tall and 110 pounds, so she always has the seat fully forward. Well the airbag went off and whacked her so hard, it gave her a bad concussion. Now I dread to think what the outcome might have been without the airbag, but, yes, they can do some injury.

Big Maude, How's Beth doing? Hope she is recovering ok. Our neighbors 19 year old son is going to be leaving on a church mission in a couple of months, and he has to have his wisdom teeth extracted before he leaves. He's not looking forward to it. I'm talking about the dental work, not the mission.

Well best get rolling. Wasps to kill, equipment to fix. In that order.

Prayers for all.

Asa

August 14, 2012 - Msg 89802: Good Tuesday porch friends, hope all is well this morning.

Good to hear from you Spot and glad you are doing okay. Just let any of us know if you need anything.

Asa, Beth has done very well with her her wisdom teeth surgery. She only took the pain medications every 6 hours for the first day and then relied on ibuprofen during the day after that. She took the Percocet at bedtime for 2 nights and then the ibuprofen the last 2 nights. The swelling is going down in her face and she is beginning to eat more solid foods. She said she was sick of mushy food! Hopefully she will be good to go when she starts college on August 27th.

A cloudy morning on my end of the porch. a very good chance of rain and storms this afternoon according to the weather people.

guess I had better get busy here at work. seems like the paperwork has multiplied x 10 since Friday.

lunch menu will be: grilled cheese, tomato soup,
pickles, chips. Mr. Cookie Bar for dessert.
tea and lemonade o drink.

Prayers and blessings to all and prayers for SPOT as he goes forward.

August 14, 2012 - Msg 89803: Friends, it is approaching 10 a.m. here in Texas, and is an hour later where Spot is, so I would imagine he is about to be seated in the chapel for Miss Sherry's services. Please, anyone who is on the porch right now, let's have a moment of prayer for our friend, and for the rest of Miss Sherry's family. This is a very hard time for them.

Our Father, we ask that at this very moment you will become a warm and real presence in our friend's heart, and will so fill his spirit during the next few hours that he will be able to find peace. We know that there will be times of heavy grief, disbelief, a struggle to accept, and all of these things are natural and normal, and acceptable to You. You understand, as no one else does. We cannot fathom the grief and deep emotion You experienced as Your only Son was sacrificed, innocent and undeserving, for our sins. Yet that very experience formed the connection, the bond, that lets You understand exactly what we are going through when we lose a loved one. Please give Spot a large measure of your comfort, and make him aware that his dear Sherry is now at home with You, and is happy beyond anything we can imagine, and most important, help him to remember that because of his faith in You, he will see her again. We ask this in that name that is above every other name, Jesus' blessed name. Amen.

August 14, 2012 - Msg 89808: REV, the lines from the song you wrote have filled my mind these days. "Daddy, I'm home. You ought to see this place! I met Jesus face to face! Daddy, I'm home!" It's such a beautiful song, and carries such a strong message of comfort. Folks, if you don't have one of REV's CDs that includes this song, you need to get one. He has written many, many beautiful songs, but this one is on the top of my list of favorites.

I left my car at the dealership and drove home in a Cadillac SRX, with just 9k miles on it. It's pretty, it's sporty, it has a lot of gadgets, and I like my own car much better! It's one of those crossover things, like a small SUV. The trunk of my car will hold as much, if not more, than the back end of the SRX. The inside of the car is smaller than mine, by quite a bit. In the back seat, my car has at least six inches more legroom for the passengers. I can seat three in the back seat of mine. The SRX would not - just two. However, it's very pretty, "snazzy-looking" as my dad would have said, and for a young person, it would be ideal. It's zippy and very responsive, short turning radius, all those things that the youngsters like. It definitely does not ride like my car does, it's harder and a bit choppy, but kids don't care about a cushy ride. I do. Yep, I'll keep mine.

Sunday night when Eloise and I went after Bentley, at one point I noticed a little noise like a window wasn't closed tightly, so tested the buttons. When I did, the right rear window made a terrible noise and dropped about four inches, and wouldn't go back up. Later, on a patch of rough road, it fell all the way down and disappeared. Today I took it to Sewell, and they wanted over $700 to fix it! Seems the rear windows cost more than the front ones, for whatever reason. Or - they could put the window back in place and stabilize it so it will stay, but won't go up and down, for $275. Guess which one I chose. Like I told Alan, my service advisor, why should I spend $500 more so a grandkid can sit back there and make me crazy playing with the window? This will be the first repair on that car where I haven't brought it back to new-car condition, but that was just too much money. Ridiculous.

Oh! I now have three hummers! I just saw all three of them at one time. I knew there were two, but hadn't seen the third one. Precious little things, I just love them. I keep fresh sugar water in the feeder all the time, and just about any time I look out there, somebody is getting a drink. It's so easy and so cheap to feed them, and I really enjoy it. The feeder is right outside my window, so when they're feeding, they're no more than five feet from me. Sometimes one will come up to the window and hover, just looking in at me, about three feet away. So cute!

Well, time for a little lunch. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

August 14, 2012 - Msg 89809: Wonderful prayer...AMEN!

I am not surprised by the air bag stat. I never allow Erin to sit in the front. She about the size of your wife, Asa, and I don't think she is safe in the front. I, with my girth and long legs have nothing to worry about because I have to put the seat way back. My sister ran into a friend in the store the other day who had been in a minor wrech that set off the airbags and she had two black eyes like a raccoon! I guess she was lucky that's all she had.

Maude, I remember getting my wisdom teeth out when I was in my 20's and I couldn't take the pain meds because they made me sick to my stomach! yuck. It sure was nice to have them out and done with, though. Hope Beth recovers nicely with no problems.

That sounds like some vehicle, Ro. Sean just got his van out of the shop today (the one Dad gave him) and Bruce is about to buy my brother-in-law's Ford Ranger. The old one he has been driving to work for 10 years defies description! What a jalopy. It is TIME for another. Bruce has to drive almost an hour each way to work everyday. His job is out on the base, towards padre island so, it is a drive. He needs something dependable and it will be doing my brother-in-law a favor. Its a cute little metallic-plum colored truck with 40,000 miles on it, which isn't much for a Ranger. The last two we had ran for over 10 years and our current one has 200,000 miles on it and is still going.

Better get to the laundry and something productive. It has been one of those days where I am just dragging around because I didn't sleep well and woke up before dawn. :(
