July 30, 2012 - Msg 89557: Here's an update on YouTube. I just tried to view "Aunt Bee Takes a Job". I searched for it and found a YouTube link. But when I clicked on the play arrow, I received the following message "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by CBS." So I expect that the TAGS episode that still remain on YouTube will soon disappear.

Welcome to Sal Gal. I'm poor Horatio (mentioned in the "Opie's Charity" episode). Although I am an American citizen, I am a permanent resident of Canada (near Toronto). I've been posting here intermittently since about 1997.
Although many of us post with usernames that are related to The Andy Griffith Show (aka TAGS), you can choose any kind of username. Is Sal Gal related to the show? What do you like about the show? And who is your favorite character from the show?

July 30, 2012 - Msg 89558: Good morning, porch, and a special welcome to Sal Gal. Honey, did they already make you sweep the porch? Sorry about that, but you surely did do a nice job. Everything looks so nice and clean! Reading your post, I'm guessing you do a lot of texting? (The 4s and 2s were my first clue.) If you're comfortable with that, you just go right ahead. You'll find most of us haven't adopted that form of "speech", at least not on the porch, but it's certainly OK if you do. Shoot, my little old fat phone doesn't even know how to do that, and I haven't gotten around to getting one of those smart phone things, so I haven't learned the abbreviated speech yet. Oh, and be sure to sign your name when you post. I guess texting is a one-to-one thing, but on the porch, there are a bunch of us, and identification is helpful. I think "Sal-Gal" is a great name. Are you the same Sally that danced with Al at the old Gigolo Club in Yancey?

Oh, and there are a lot of Elvis fans around here, too. I'm one of them. I'm about to go on another of the "Cruise to Mayberry" trips. Check out the sidebar on the home page for information about it. This will be my fifth Mayberry cruise, and they are so much fun. If you're interested, there might still be room. I'd be happy to put you in touch with the planner. I mentioned it now because along with the Mayberry tribute artists, (we don't say impersonators) we have an Elvis as well, and he does a terrific job.

Now Asa, you just hush about those bats. I keep telling you, they will not get in your hair, and they don't lay eggs, and even if they did, it wouldn't make you go crazy. As for moths, I'm not so sure. I've never had one get in my hair, but they do lay eggs, and if one ever did lay them in my hair, I think I'd get a little nutty. Maybe not completely crazy, but I'd sure have a hair-washing compelsion for a while.

Well, better get busy around here. This house still looks like it's been stirred with a stick, with all the stuff sitting around waiting to be put away in my nice new bedroom. I still have to wipe down and polish the furniture before I put stuff back, and I have about a fifteen minute window of activity before I have to stop and rest. I'll be glad when that time lengthens a bit.

Well, Eloise is on her way over, we're going to go find some lunch. Maybe at the Big State Drug Store. They make a fine, old-timey hamburger and wonderful onion rings. It's fun. Old, well-worn wooden booths, a few soda-fountain tables, and a counter like the one in Walker's Drug Store. It's like stepping back in time, and I love to eat there. Yes, they make a great malt - nice and thick and they pour it up in a glass, then give you the mixing can with enough in it to fill the glass a second time. It's fun! REV, when you're in town in October, maybe we can get in a visit to Big State. That is, if I can tear you away from Babe's Chicken.

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

July 30, 2012 - Msg 89559: No more "Andy" on YouTube? Another example of Govermental Take-overs!! What's next A tax on bats! July 30, 2012 - Msg 89561: Bats lay eggs?!...well that shows ya what I know; I thought they were mammals.

Wish we had a Big State drug store near us, Ro. sounds like fun. We have one old remaining drug store with a cafe and soda fountain in Corpus and it is packed at lunchtime...that should send a message to someone who is thinking about opening a restaurant, shouldn't it? Someone should open one like the oldtime soda fountains. It would be a big hit around here. We have one old cafe remainin in our small town and it is always full. People want to remember the good old days when the food is hot and the specials don't cost you an arm and a leg. I like going there because the waitresses treat you like a friend and they bring out those hot plate specials with things like meatloaf or stew...always served with a couple of sides like pototos and veggies, soup or salad, a dinner roll and usually jello or cottage cheese with fruit.

Been cleaning the laundry room and putting away clothes. We are hiring a carpenter to do some tile repair work in there and to build me another shelf above the washer and dryer. As it is, I have to set my laundry soap and supplies on top of the washer and there is all this empty space above it. Also, poor Bruce tried to crawl up in the space above the porch to hang my swing and he just couldn't. The poor old coot tried his best but with that belly of his and in this heat, he woulda killed himself...so, that is another job for the carpenter. He is supposed to come today to let us know what he will charge. I won't have my porch swing by my birthday tomorrow but I would rather have it later in the week than have Bruce die up there!

Well, better get back at it..

July 31, 2012 - Msg 89566: What a day! Glad its coming to an end. Having in-law problems with that one special (ahem) sister-in-law that is always stirring up trouble in the family. She and my mom-in-law are two peas in a pod. Bruce and his siblings are in the process of planning an 80th birthday party for his mom and this one, immature sister has to cause trouble at every turn. Its a control issue and she hates her older sister, which doesn't help...lots of rivalry. I am staying out of it, no matter how sis-in-law and mom-in-law try to pull me into the middle of the drama. Tick-a-lock, as Bee would say. I'm not falling for it. One good thing about being 50 is that I am getting so much better at NOT trying to fix other people's problems and it is liberating as heck. Now let me put this soapbox away.

Tomorrow I'll be 50 and I am happy about it! I like to celebrate making another year of life..I'm not one of those women who worries about wrinkles, and I am pleased with the wisdom that life experience is bringing me. :)

July 31, 2012 - Msg 89573: Oh, how true, MDC! Happy birthday anyway, Boo. You're right, one of the perks of passing that mid-century mark is that you do get a little wiser. Oh, there will be relapses (don't I know it!) but generally, you'll be more comfortable just standing back and letting someone else catch the pie in the face (or whatever.)

For cryin' out loud, Boo! Bats don't lay eggs, that's moths that do that. And chickens. But bats don't. Giraffes don't either. It's a good thing, it would surely break when it hit the ground from that high up. Splat!

Little by little, I'm getting my bedroom back to normal. Still a lot of little stuff to put back, and some furniture polishing to do, but there's no time limit. I'm having a hard time finding rugs, though. They have to be washable, and there just doesn't seem to be much of a selection. I've chased every internet link I can find, and just haven't found anything I like. I need a rectangle about 2.5 to 3 feet by 5 or 6 feet, an oval about 3x5 feet, and a round one about 3, maybe 4 feet in diameter. I want them soft and plushy, but still washable. Colors can be a deep gold, or a rusty red. Girls, if you run across anything like that while shopping, would you get the brand/maker and the name of the store where you found it, especially if it's a national chain? I'd appreciate some help! I thought this would be easy, but so far, it's not!

Well, guess I'll turn in. I'm up late, can sleep late in the morning since no one is coming to do anything, for a change. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Ro, would you believe that I have been looking for a certain kind of rug for Erin's room for over 2 years? Haven't been able to find one anywhere. If I happen to come across what you are looking for I will let you know.

G-F, the in-law thing heated up some last night but Bruce kept his cool and refused to be baited into being pulled into the ugliness. He is doing just fine and it is driving my sis-in-law crazy, I can tell. His keeping cool is causing things to stay in control. If trouble-making sis-in-law can't stand it she can bow out and everyone will be better off. One things for sure, talking sense to her never works. She's like a short, chubby giraffe....selfish! hehe

July 31, 2012 - Msg 89582: Well, Boo, all I can say is, hooray for Bruce! Apparently, he has learned the secret, that it takes two to make a fight. There is nothing more frustrating to a troublemaker, than a non-response from his or her target. I don't mean total silence, that will usually just draw more fire. They're looking for a response. My mother was an absolute master at frustrating an aggressor, and I learned a lot from her. It took until I was past fifty before I realized what I had learned, and began to practice it, but it works.

When someone is trying to pick a fight, or stir up trouble, the first step is just to look at them, with a long, thoughtful stare, a small smile, and maybe a little "hmmm", like you're thinking about what they're saying. Next step, say "Is that really what you think?" or something similar, whatever fits. Then, "Can you tell me why you believe that?" Now, that's an argument stopper, right there. If all else fails, you fall back on "Well, you could be right. Now, what's for dinner?" or whatever subject-changer fits. Believe me, that one works. You're not arguing with them, nor have you really agreed. You have just ended the discussion. This one can be repeated a zillion times if necessary, until the troublemaker either gets tired or decides you're an idiot and not worth arguing with, which shouldn't bother you at all. Who cares what they think? The point is, never, ever, ever get into an argument with a troublemaker, or a bully, or an idiot, and often you find all three traits in one person. You can't win, and you shouldn't care, because their agenda is usually worthless anyway. Just say "You could be right" and go on your merry way, leaving them to wonder who won. When you don't even care who wins, it just frustrates the heck out of them. (And that is so much fun!!)

What kind of rug are you looking for, for Erin's room? In my many internet travels, maybe I'll run across something. Who knew that finding some simple little fluffy, washable rugs could be so much trouble? I thought I'd find an abundance of them, but such is not the case. Oh well. Sooner or later....

Well, guess I'll go find some lunch. Got some leftovers that aren't too shabby, and I like leftovers, so should be easy to find something. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

August 01, 2012 - Msg 89597: Good morning and thanks for all the birthday wishes. I did not have the birthday I had planned, but it was better really. My idea of the perfect birthday was to take it easy, spend some "me time" alone, etc. What I had underestimated was how many people would be a part of the day for me. After I left the porch yesterday morning, got me another cup of coffee and was about to settle in for some peace and quiet because the kids were still asleep, the phone rang and a good friend needed a ride home after putting her car in the shop. That didn't take long it was great to see her...had a few laughs, as usual. By the time I got home, the kids were up and a couple of friends had dropped in to wish my a happy birthday and there on the counter with a birthday card, was a big black balloon tied to a Sonic Route 44 unsweet tea with lemon and extra ice (my favorite). After a short visit, they were on their way to the church thrift shop where they and Sean volunteer. By then it was nearly noon so I grabbed a sandwich and went to check my emails...as I was sitting there, I heard Bruce come in early from work. He had brought flowers and said, "Happy Birthday! I came home early so I could take you for a drive in the country", so I took Erin to her cousin's house and we went for a drive. Well, not what I had planned but turned out to be very enjoyable..we found a county road between here and Goliad that was beautiful and had such a nice drive through the country. I told him after that I just wanted to go home and have a quiet evening with my family and that I was going to send him out for take-out (remember the plan, for the love of Mike?). Well, the kids talked me into going out to a local buffet/homestyle restaurant and I caved. Some of our friends happened to be there and we joined up tables and ate together. Then I got a call from Zach (my deceased friend's son who is going to Baylor in a couple of weeks). He wanted to come and see me because he was going to be working every evening between now and the day he leaves for Baylor. I couldn't say no and I did want to see him before he left, so he and Ali came over at around 9 last night and there I sat watching the Olympics (which I don't care about, especially), surrounded by kids and I was so blessed. Things don't always go as planned but I was so blessed with being able to share my birthday with the people I love so much. One of these days I am going to look back at these days and they will be "the good ol' days" when my nest was full and overflowing with love. God has been very good to me. So far 50 is just fine. :)

Hazel, you are hilarious. I am going to use that hip replacement thing on a friend of mine who has a birthday today.

Better git...left some chores undone yesterday that need to be done today.

August 01, 2012 - Msg 89599: Good morning, porch! Boo, isn't it remarkable, the way God always seems to know what we need the most, even when it's not what we think we want? It sounds to me like He sent you some people and some events that were precisely what you needed, and would have missed if they hadn't come. I especially like the drive in the countryside with Bruce. Dale and I used to cherish those times when we could get away, just the two of us, and go for a long drive somewhere. He always seemed to know just the right little obscure road to follow, and we saw some wonderful things. We had some of our very best heart-to-heart talks on those drives, too. I miss them, and of course, I miss him. The thought of seeing him again some day keeps me going.

Eloise and I are going to try to wedge ourselves into a Chick-fil-A this afternoon. We thought we'd go around 1:30 or 2, as it will surely be jammed at noon.

Asa, I'm sorry you have to battle those wasps. You should get combat pay for that. Did I give you the name of that spray I bought a while back, and did you find some of it? I declare, that stuff is amazing. I mean, they don't even fly when that spray hits them. They drop on the spot, and they don't move. Amazing stuff. I try to "live and let live" around here, and that extends to wasps, up to a point. They have a place in the scheme of things, and serve a purpose, but when their agenda crosses mine, guess who is going to win? After all, I make the payments on this place, not them. There's a nest in a shrub, in an out of the way place, and I leave it alone. However, when they built a nest in a corner of my front porch, they were history. No one goes near that particular shrub, but the front porch? I think not.

My persistent little hummingbird is at the feeder again - he's there nearly all day, every day. This morning, another one came in, and he tolerated him briefly, then ran him off. Boy, hummingbirds are selfish!

Well, guess I'd better go feed my little friend. We slept late this morning, so it's more like lunch for her. As for me, I'm just going to wait for my chicken sandwich later on. Maybe I'll drink a glass of buttermilk - love the stuff. Got to have something to keep the old blood sugar level. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

August 01, 2012 - Msg 89604: you are so right, Ro. One thing i didn't share is that I came very close to telling Zach that I was just too tired for anymore company, but let me tell you how his visit with me went. I know Zach was feeling a little insecure about moving so far from home in 2 weeks, and he was missing his mother (its been almost 5 years since her passing) and for Zach, I am the next best thing to mom. I swear that grown boy was practically sitting in my lap as we watched the Olympics. He started off sitting in the floor and leaning against one of my legs, then he was up on the on the arm of my chair almost in my lap. He was trying to be a grown man but the little boy in him was missing his mom and needed a "mom" to be with. I am so thankful I realized that he needed me and that I didn't give him an excuse. He didn't overstay his welcome. When it was getting late, he took his little sister and went home. I hope I was a comfort for him for a little while. You see, Jesus and I had a short conversation early yesterday and while I was wanting to be selfish, I realized that the way to really have a blessed day was to also be a blessing to others. He worked things out just right.

Now, have to go take mom-in-law to get her glasses from the eye doctor..

August 01, 2012 - Msg 89610: Well, we didn't make it to Chick-fil-A today. Eloise and Jerry drove through the area on their way home from somewhere about 11 a.m., and they said the traffic was backed up for a block, trying to turn into the drive-thru line, the parking lot was full and the lots for all the surrounding businesses were full, and people were lined up outside the building, waiting to get inside. I figured they wouldn't miss my purchase today, but I will get by there tomorrow. I'm glad they had such a great turnout.

Boo, I'm so glad you were there for Zach. Just because a boy becomes a young man doesn't mean he doesn't still need some mothering. I remember when I was the nurse at church camp one summer, and a big old almost-17 year old boy, over six feet and about 200 pounds, knocked on my door one night about 10:30. He said he had a bad stomach ache. I gave him some Mylanta and sent him back to bed. He was back in about a half hour, still hurting. More Mylanta, back to bed. The third time he came, he was fighting tears. I knew there was more to it, so I asked him what he thought would help. Through choked-back sobs, he said, "Well, if I could just call my mom and tell her good night, I think I'd feel better." Of course! I had the key to the office where the only phone was (no cell phones in those days), so I let him call his mother, who happened to be a friend of mine. After a brief conversation, he emerged all smiles, and off he went to bed, a happy camper, as the saying goes. Sweetest thing I ever saw. Men are really just little boys at heart, and that's why we love them.

Well, guess I'll go watch Perry Mason. I love that show. Raymond Burr reminds me of my Dale, so much. His calm, in-control demeanor, his gentleness, and most of all, his eyes. He had those beautiful eyes, so much like Dale's. Oh my goodness, how I miss those eyes!

Blessings, friends! --Romeena

August 01, 2012 - Msg 89611: I wish I could take credit for the "Hip Hip Replacement" thing, but truth is, I saw it on a Hallmark card years ago when I was picking out a card for my husband, and I've taken it as my own motto. That's probably a violation of a code or something... like maybe a 907. No, wait, that's the one for dipping a hat in a horse trough.
I love your description of your day, Boo, especially the part about when you and Zach were watching TV. (sniff)
Ro, I know what you mean about the live and let live thing outdoors. About how it just goes, to a certain point. Take mice, for instance. I mean, really TAKE 'em. I hate mice. Ugh. But anyway, if I see one scurry around outside, I really don't do anything about it. And this summer, I have had more than one, I think there's a couple of mice families living in my backyard. So, I just ignore them, even though they freak me out (did I say I hate mice?).
But my policy in the house is somewhat different. If there's a mouse in the house, that's it. I make hubby get out the traps and get the little pests. I will not tolerate a mouse in the house. Outdoors is one thing, but afterall, I did not invite them in, so, sorry guys, but "SNAP", off with your heads.

Hazel, tell us how you REALLY feel about mice, dear. :)

Prayers for your 14 yr old and your daughter, SalGal. By the way, the censor sometimes stops you for strange things...like the word "insu@nce"...there is a reason but now that I'm 50 I can't remember what it is...

Gotta hit the sack.

Boo

August 02, 2012 - Msg 89621: Boo, I think Floyd said that words like "insur@nce" were censored to prevent spam-bots from invading the porch. Gee, sounds like a sci-fi movie, doesn't it? :)
SalGal, don't you hate when you have a big posting and it says you need to go back and edit it? That has happened to me a few times. It should show the offending word(s) in red, and then you hit your "back" button to go back and remove or change the word(s). Although, sometimes it doesn't show them in red, and you have to figure out what word(s) is the offending one. And then sometimes it is not a word at all, but punctuation. I think I had one where I had too many "!"'s(that's exclamation points) in my post. I tell you, I had to chop up my post pretty good before I was done with it and it finally posted. More than likely though, it is a word(s) that could be associated with spammers(and not the lunchmeat kind), like "insur@nce".

Romeena, I wish we had a Chick-Fil-A around here. I would love to go to one. We had them when I lived in Indiana and the chicken nuggets were pretty good. The only one we have here in WI is 4 1/2 hours away so that doesn't help me.

August 02, 2012 - Msg 89626: Good morning, porch! Sal-Gal, don't feel stepped on when the censor gets you. It has happened to all of us. The explanations the others have given are spot on, except that in my browser, the questionable entry is shown in green. I guess different browsers do different things. Anyway, it's all done for our protection. A few years ago, we had an epidemic of spammers, mostly from insur@nce brokers, where their ad would appear, and then be repeated about a hundred times. That burns up space, and costs Floyd money. Annoying to us, too. We also were invaded by some filthy-minded individuals who posted some unbelievably awful things, apparently thinking they were funny. Floyd deleted them promptly, and blocked their ISP so they couldn't post again, at least not from that particular computer. It hasn't happened in quite a while now, thanks to Floyd's diligence.

Well, gotta run. Have to take my cameras in for repair, pick up Eloise and go get a chicken sandwich, and then be at rehab for physical therapy at 3. Blessings, all! --Romeena

Hazel, I don't mean to scare you, but there is a mouse in your house. It is attached to your computer. LOL

SalGal, whenever you encounter the Front Porch censor, just look for a word or words that are different in color than the majority of words. That will be the offender. Sometimes trying to figure out why a word is offensive can be difficult. I once could not figure out why the censor prevented me from using "specialist" in my posting. I had to email the site's owner Floyd, and he said there was an embedded word (letters 4 through 9) that is the name of a drug that treats an adult problem. Up until this point, I had never heard of that drug.
Also, as you requested, I will add your 14 year old and daughter to my prayer list.
Finally, did you see my questions to you in Msg 89557 above?

August 02, 2012 - Msg 89632: Hey, porch. Back from errands, and my first physical therapy session. Didn't do much there today, just some electro-stim to increase circulation in the surgical areas. Not bad.

Yeah, that old censor is annoying at times, but trust me, it's nowhere near as annoying as some of the attacks we weathered before Floyd put those filters in place.

I had a few minutes before my PT appointment, so stoped in the Home Goods store (part of TJMaxx), to look for rugs for the bedroom. Didn't find anything, but I did find the most adorable little puppy bed. It's a little wicker, oval shaped bedframe, on legs yet, with a velvet cuddle bed nestled in it. Cutest thing ever, and just Toye Starr's size. Very tiny. She's going to love it, and it was cheap! I'll put it in the sunroom, where I have mostly wicker furniture anyway. Couldn't resist it.

As for my cameras, the man was able to sand off the corrosion where the battery had leaked in the big camera, and apparently all the little camera needed was a working battery. The two I had evidently just weren't accepting a charge anymore. He put a fresh battery in, and it worked fine. So I had to buy a new battery - $50!! I could have almost bought a camera for that. Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

Back to PT in the morning. I think I could get tired of this. It's going to be pretty often.

Blessings! --Romeena

August 02, 2012 - Msg 89633: Er, that's "stopped", not "stoped". --Romeena

August 02, 2012 - Msg 89634: Glad things are progressing so well with your back Romeena. Stay with the PT even if it's hurts. A co-worker had back surgery last year and after a few sessions of PT decided it hurt too much and stopped, she walks bent over, can't straighten up. It's sad she is in her mid forties.

August 02, 2012 - Msg 89635: Toye Starr's bed sounds really cute, Ro..hope she likes it.

August 03, 2012 - Msg 89637: Poor Horatio I guess that question will be Sheriff Taylor. I thought he was a great actor and I still believe the way his character was ,was the way he was in real life. I love a gentleman. Seems there aren't many around anymore. One thing I can honostly say is ...A Marine is always a gent.Such a great show. My dad was a barber for years as well as a coal miner and he looked like Floyd. If I could post a photo I would. I'm sure you would agree.
My dad worked 5 day weeks and cut hair on Saturdays all day long.He had a long bench in the shop and everyone seemed to come at the same time.talk, laughter, and compassion for others was a way of life. I miss those saturdays.I miss my dad too. He called me Girl-Baby. I was the youngest of 8. Sorry I got a little windy.Ha

SalGal

August 03, 2012 - Msg 89638: Hi, porch! Sal-Gal, what a lovely memory you have of your dad. I know what you mean about loving a gentleman. My dad was always so, to the point of being a bit quaint in these days, but the ladies all loved him. He adored my mother, was utterly faithful, but still treated other women with old-fashioned good manners. Naturally, like many women with good dads, when it came to choosing my own husband, my dad's model was in my mind, and I chose well.

Thanks, Frankie, that's good advice. I know well the importance of good physical therapy, and I won't give up. I expect to come out of this whole business a lot better off than I was. When I was rehabbing my knee after surgery a few years ago, a woman from my SS class was in rehab at the same time, for knee surgery. Our sessions often coincided, and I never heard such moaning and carrying on. Yes, it hurts. So did the knee before surgery. I finished mine, she didn't, and now she walks with a cane and is in obvious pain, with a knee that won't fully straighten. I could hear her telling the therapist "but it hurts!" and I wanted to ask her what she expected after surgery, but I didn't. Once she asked me how I could do the exercises, as much as it hurt, and I said I just did it because it had to be done. Her response was that hers must hurt more than mine. I'll admit, I do have a very high pain tolerance (have to, I can't take pain pills) but believe me, my knee hurt too!

I'm coming up empty on finding rugs for the new bedroom floor. I want fluffy, pretty area rugs, in nice earth-tone colors, and they MUST be washable. No luck, so far, and I've been online for hours.

You know that $50 battery I bought from the camera shop? Found the same battery on Amazon for 14.99. Grrr! Still, the guy fixed my big camera and didn't charge me, so I guess I won't complain, but I won't buy another battery there, either. I ordered one from Amazon though, for a backup.

Well, it's late, I'm beyond tired, and Toye Starr has flopped on the floor, so guess we'd better go to bed. I have another PT session in the morning, so should get some rest. Blessings, all, and Boo, you be careful driving to SA in the morning. --Romeena

August 03, 2012 - Msg 89639: Good Friday morning all.

SalGal, don't apologize for such a nice post. That's how we get to know you. And we all appreciate and enjoy posts such as that. I don't mean to sound like a spokesperson for the porch, but I feel confident in making that statement. And prayers for your daughter Liz, and her son.

Boo, How you aim to drive? Drive safe and don't speed. :)

Prayers for your PT to go well Ro. I know it can be boring and torture, but as you said, it's gotta be done.

Well best get. Lots to do today.

Prayers for all.

Nice story about your dad, SG (SalGal). My grandfather was a coal miner in West Virginia and as I have shared with these folks before, my grandma's daddy was killed in a cave-in when he was still a young man.

Better git movin'. Ya'll have a great day!
