When will I learn to proofread? That should be "in fact", not "in fast", of course. Also, just to clarify who is who in the scenario above - Joe is my landscaper friend, who has built all my flowerbeds, walkways, the pond, put in the sprinklers and the drainage system - all the structural stuff in the yard, both front and back. Joe also maintains the shrubbery, trimming, shearing and pruning where needed. Eddie is the yard man, who mows, edges and tidies up. He does not weed or plant or get involved with the flowerbeds, except today when he and his helper pitched in to help. The division of labor is clear, and before I asked Eddie to help out, I checked with Joe first. I knew he wouldn't mind, would in fact appreciate the help, but it was the courteous thing to do, since flowerbed maintenance is Joe's domain. Protocol must be honored! --Romeena

Howdy porch family....busy day around here. Trying to get packed up for my summer tour. Leave in the morning and won't get back to SC until August.
Spot....I'm so sorry to hear Miss Sherry is having a tough go of it this round. I'm sure praying for her.......and you!
Last week I had to go back for my eyes....I went to a new doctor. Very well respected in the area. My pressure had gone back up again to 34. He put me on a new drop and told me to come back in 2 weeks. Well today I went back and praise the Lord it's down to 17.....that's great for me. He wrote the presciption and when I had it filled....the price was $200.00 for one month. My insur#nce does not cover it and I have to take it the rest of my life. It's crazy. I called the doctor back and he was really ticked off. Now the insur#nce company has called back and said that they will cover an "alternative" med. So after this bottle is out we're going to try the other. I sure hope it works and is a lot cheaper. I've tried the generic brand but it doesn't work. He showed me today that my right eye has a lot of damage already. He said the right eye is considered severe glaucoma and the left is not quite as bad. He told me if I had not gotten something done when I did, I would more than likely be blind very shortly. That's scary. But ya'll, even with all this going on it's still something good to come out of it......I get to let those doctors and nurses see the goodness of our God at work....I love it:)
Sorry for rambling on about my eyes.
Gas prices....$3.15 here today. That will help me on the road big time.....PRAISE THE LORD
Well I better get back to packing the motorhome. I'll try and stop back later tonight.
Love and prayers for all my porch family.

Boo, I'm a Three Stooges fan. Although the slapstick action is very physical and violent, it was very funny for me and my wife. And the producers added a few scenes that might have been censored with the original stooges (like babies urinating and a lion getting hit in his family jewels). If I had kids, I would take them after a brief explanation that this was entertainment and not real life.
auh2o, there have been some new developments concerning Nik Wallenda's tightrope walk across Niagara Falls on June 15.
#1 - ABC is planning on broadcasting a three hour special during the walk;
#2 - ABC is requiring Nik (against this will) to be tethered to the tightrope.
#3 - There is a pair of nesting falcons nearby. They are protective of their nests and have been known to attack threats.
REV, I hope your upcoming summer tour is a success.

May 25, 2012 - Msg 88706:
Good evening, porch. About the Wallenda tightrope walk, I think it's just plain silly. OK, so he walks a rope across Niagara Falls. It's no more of a feat than if he had walked a rope stretched a few feet above a calm lake, where if he falls he just waits for a boat to pick him up. He either completes the walk without falling, or he doesn't. If he makes it, he has demonstrated his skill, whether over the falls or over a lake. If he doesn't, and he is over the falls, all he has demonstrated is that he's not very bright, and it won't matter either way if he's dead. What a dumb trick! He's a very skilled performer, but what a dumb trick!
REV, I'm sorry to hear about the troubles with your eyes, and hope the alternative med will work. The prices of medications these days are just ridiculous. You take care of yourself, you hear? And you're going to be on the road until when?? Boy, I'll bet Mrs. Rev is not looking forward to that, and of course, neither are you, but God calls and you answer.
Well, guess I'll put my bone-weary body into bed and get some rest. Joe will be back in the morning, and I'll have to be up and at 'em, and then I have to work tomorrow night. Yuck.
Blessings, friends. --Romeena

Hey Folks
In the 90's here today...
Our gas prices are still over $3.90 a gallon, that's why I buy it by the quart 98 cents. Talk about a deal.
Spot-You and Miss Sherry are always in my prayers.
PH-Thanks for the info. Three hours, I'm gonna miss the last 180 minutes of it.
Romeena-There you go using common sense again. In Niagara Falls they are constantly aware and sensitive to stopping stunts like this one. The emergency responders (on both sides) are always the ones put in harms way by some clown, or some sick individual, acting irrationally. Some of the rescues they make seem like something out of a movie. I can't believe the local governments green-lighted this thing. Just this week there has been two suicide attempts at the falls.

Suicide attempts at Niagra Falls? I don't mean to sound insensitive, but if you wanted to kill yourself, wouldn't you find a less TERRIFYING means to do it? We have a very tall bridge near us under which ships pass to go into the harbor and now and then someone jumps off to their death. Why not take a handful of sleeping pills instead? Morbid subject.

Does anyone else see the irony in Rev's statement about the meds? The current admin has told the RRC and any ins. cos. that they use that they MUST offer the contracep. and mornign after drugs, etc., yet for Rev's eye meds, they do what they want!! There's a story here that will never get out, so sad.
But prayers indeed for Rev, Sherry, and all.

Good morning, porch! It's beautiful here today, a little hazy, brisk breeze, temp 81 and climbing. It got to 93 yesterday. I was expecting Joe to come by to finish up some things and install the new drainage pump, but he called, will come tomorrow. Seems his a/c has quit at home, and he needs to get it fixed. His wife is not in good health, and I can well understand that he wants to keep her comfortable. No problem, nothing happening here that won't wait.
Boo, about the various methods of doing one's self in - I think that reflects the many reasons why people do it. For some, it's because their despair is so deep they can see no other way out, and they are the ones who usually choose a private, irrevocable way. I have been there, almost. God sent an angel in the form of Sugarplum, to remind me that my life still had some purpose, and that there were those who would be terribly hurt by my action. I'm so glad He did that. I have learned to lean heavily on God, always, and to remember that "this too shall pass." Because it will.
For some people, the motivation is not so much to take their own life (they forget that's part of the deal) but instead they want to pay somebody back for something, or hurt someone else, or call attention to themselves. Those are the ones who choose the flamboyant methods - jump over the falls, or even just swallow enough pills to make themselves very sick, but hoping it won't kill them. (That'll show that boyfriend, so there!) I recall a teenage girl, years ago, who had swallowed a small bottle of Tylenol tablets, after a nasty fight with some knot-headed, skinny-necked, slumped-over teenage boy. Made her sicker than a dog, and earned her many large doses of the incredibly nasty-tasting Mucomyst, to absorb and eliminate the acetaminophen, and probably caused her some liver damage that will show up later, but it didn't kill her. Didn't particularly impress the boyfriend, either. He just thought she was stupid. Which she was.
One thing is for sure, though. Anytime someone expresses suicidal thoughts, take them seriously. You never know who is just trying to impress, and who is serious. A life is too precious to allow it to be thrown away in a moment of bad judgment or pain.
Well, I guess I'll take this unexpectedly free morning and use it to get a few things done. Or maybe I'll run over to John's garden center and pick up a couple of hibiscus plants, and then I can conscript Joe into planting them for me when he comes by tomorrow. I need to get some fresh Nyjer thistle seed, too. I just saw a goldfinch out back, and would like to keep him coming around. Yep, that sounds like more fun than doing laundry. Then this afternoon, I'll have a little nap, then go to work. I have five more shifts to work, then my surgery happens, and I'll be off for about three months. Oh, how I'd love to retire! Blessings, friends. --Romeena

I never thought about it that way, Ro (about the different types of suicide) but makes perfect sense. I had an old childhood friend (Lilly) once who had numerous suicide attempts but never quite managed to die from them. Once she sliced her abdomen open Japanese style, but not deep enough to cause death and another time she wrapped a bunch of razor blades in bread and swallowed them with Dr. Pepper... she called for help right after. She had done other things too but was never really successful because she didn't really want to die. Poor thing had so many problems and that was her way of getting people's attention I guess. She was abused as a child and had an extremely dysfunctional family. I remember my sister and I going to visit her once on the phych ward at the county hospital after a suicide attempt and she was in great spirits and laughing and joking. She said she had been on the lock down floor and didn't like it there so she tore down the shower curtain, wore it as a cape and went flying down the hall pretending to be superman and they transferred her to the hall she wanted to be on. That's been at least 30 years ago but I remember it like it was yesterday. Lilly died about 10 years later, but not from suicide.
Why the short visit, Asa? Hey, you wanna go to Mt. Pilot with me tomorrow night to see that Glenn Ford movie? I'll let you hang your head out the window.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM!!!
Went to see Zach graduate tonight. You may remember Zach is the son of my deceased friend Karen. I was so proud to see him get his diploma but it was bittersweet because I always imagined that I would be there with Karen on this special day. She would have been so proud.
Well, off to bed to read a little. I am reading a novel by Fannie Flagg (author of Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle Stop Inn). She writes about small town folks in the south. The one I am reading is about a man from Chicago who has emphysema and is told he only has months to live if he doesn't head south to a warmer climate. He moves to a small town in Alabama and what a change. I am enjoying it alot so far...about half finished. It is the first novel by Fannie Flagg I have read other than the fried green tomatoe one and i guess most people have seen that movie.
Off to read and then to sleep. Full day tomorrow.

No, Romeena isn't out partying, she's beat plumb to the socks and trying to catch up a little. Worked last night, came home and shortly thereafter, Joe arrived and worked here until about 1:30. We (he, actually) planted three hibiscus, two hydrangeas, one huge and very beautiful deep red geranium, a hosta and a flat of impatiens. He also replaced the drainage pump. It wasn't hard to figure out what was wrong with the old one, because when he pulled it out of the catch basin and set it on the ground, oil ran out. Guess that would cause it to short and trip the GFI, for sure. Anyway, now I have to wait for Ted to come and move the electric outlet for it. The old pump had a 12-ft cord on it, the new one is only 8 ft and won't reach the connection. No big deal, Ted says he can do that easily. I'm so grateful for these knowledgeable, capable and fair-dealing guys who help me maintain this place. Anyway, I never got to go to bed today, so am really worn out now, back hurting and all, so am off to the ironing board, or I'll never make it to preaching in the morning.
Congrats, Maude, on Beth's graduation. I know how proud you must be. I agree, it's a bit hard when that last little bird is ready to launch out into the world, but it's what we try to prepare them for, after all. Obviously you have done well with her.
Well, off I go. Toye Starr is a bit tired too - she spent all morning running from the back door to the door into the garage and back again, trying to keep up with the whereabouts of Joe and me. How I do love that little bright spirit - another of God's good gifts to me. --Romeena

Good afternoon, porch. Just a brief stop to ask for prayer for my cousin. He had a heart attack a couple of weeks ago, has been in the hospital, and now they find he has a serious infection that apparently started where his pacemaker is implanted in his heart, and the bacteria have colonized the aortic valve, virtually destroying it. If he survives the infection, which is by no means guaranteed, the valve will have to be replaced. He's ten months older than I am, and is alone. He was divorced many years ago, and has been alone ever since. He was a Marine fighter pilot, then when the war was over he left the service and started an aircraft-support company in Minnesota, which has expanded to five locations across the nation. He recently retired from that and has been living quietly with his cat, Miss Kitty, who replaced his beloved Mr. Cat, when that feline gentleman expired a few years back. This man is a sad story, really. He once studied for the ministry, but left to join the Marines. His father was a hopeless alcoholic, and his family life mostly consisted of moving with his mom and sister from one family member's home to another. He has lived a mostly reclusive life, not mean or anything, just a loner. We're about the same age, and as small children, we had a lot of fun together. We lost touch over the years, but I searched for him on the internet in 1998, found him, and have been in touch ever since. Now, at this crisis time in his life, he has insisted that no one visit or call or attempt to contact him in any way. He will contact another male cousin, and will let us know how he's doing through him. I don't like this, would love to be there for him, but I will respect his wishes. He can't keep me from praying for him, though, or from enlisting prayerful help from friends. So - I thought of you, my porch friends. His name is Lonnie, and believe me, he needs prayers. I firmly believe he is a Christian, but he still needs prayer not only for his physical recovery, but for peace for his spirit as well. Thanks, friends. --Romeena

Well, this is the first memorial day without my favorite WW2 veteran, my dad. Growing up I heard so many war stories from him and as a child, thought they were boring. Some of his experiences went with him when he passed. There were some he would have flashbacks about even right before he died. He never had to actually engage in comabat because he was on a ship in the south pacific most of the time but he still had some really terrible memories. I often think of my dear Grandma who as a young widow had to send two of her four sons to war at the same time. Dad in the navy and his brother Wyatt in the marines, I think. Wyatt, who passed in the 80's, was an explosives expert and would blow up bridges and such...very dangerous job but he made it home. Once he was one of only 2 that survived a mission.
MDC, thanks for that Ray Charles rendition of America the Beautiful.
I think we will be going over to St. Susan's to make some homemade ice cream later. I baked an apple pie for mom last night and will make a berry cobbler, too.
Still have some problems concerning in-laws and it is getting me down. I wish there was a switch I could flip to just make it all go away. You can't divorce your inlaws without divorcing your spouse, can you? ;)

In-laws. Can't live with them. Can't kill em. Whatya do?? Hang in there Boo. And don't let them drag you down. You're too good for that. I sure miss my Dad also Boo. He was in the battle of Dunkirk in France in W.W.2 on Her Majesties Service. There were things he told me about that he had never talked about before just months before he passed. I salute all who have given so much for our Nation. Let's not give it away now, not after all so many have given.
I always use Memorial day for another memory also. It was around Memorial Day in 2001 that I first started coming to the porch, and this wasn't long after Allan had restored it. So I always go back to the archives and read some of those early posts. I posted a number of times without using a name, just because I was new at it. Hazel also started posting about that time also. It was fun this morning reading her posts and her efforts to come up with a name. The only sad thing is to see the number of folks who we have not heard from for years. I wish they would all come back, but I guess life moves right along and things change and what not. But I sure treasure all the folks I have met here over the years, and those that are still here after all those years. Tom, it looks like you have been here since the start also. And I think there were some who was on here before Allan rebuilt the porch. But that was before I ever got on line. And what a great time for me to thank Allan for creating this site, and especially for keeping the archives in tact. Allan, I really appreciate all you do to keep the Mayberry spirit alive and well.
O.K. Enough of that sentimental stuff. Are we gonna have a picnic or what? Hazel, even your meatballs sound good. :)

Boo, I think PH Reminded us of the difference between in-laws & outlaws...The Outlaws are wanted!! Homemade Cobbler & Homemade Ice Cream? Ya would'nt wanna adopt a guy from Ohio for the day would ya?..haha
The local PBS station had a special where they interviewed local N.E. Ohio WW2 Veterans on their service and even some "Rosie the Riveters" too. Was a good honor to their service..
My Dad served in both Theaters, he didn't talk about it much, wished I had asked more questions when he was alive..My brother was in VietNam he WON'T talk about it!! He was a gunner & pilot on a Huey, he saw alot of bad things so I don't blame him but I am proud of his service too!..G-F

Boo, I just wanted to give you a weather report. Our daytime high temps on Saturday and Sunday was around 60. Upper 30 to mid 30's for the lows. Checked my corn this morning. The first planting has been slightly nipped by frost, but I think they'll pull through. But it's gotta get warmer to get this stuff growing. We had snow at 8,000 ft. Kinda neat to see it on the mountains in contrast with the green growth. Saw my breath this morning when I went for my run. Sorry Boo, just getting even when your basking in the 60's in the winter and I'm shivering me timbers in the teens. :)

Well, thanks for the advice concerning in-laws, Asa. I have indeed decided not to let them drag me down. :) I am taking the high road and hanging on to the Lord. I am not going to let bitterness, jealousy, and pettiness ruin my joy.
Funny quote, G-F! (the one by Brisco). Hey, guess what we had at St. Susan's today? I made a homemade berry cobbler and homemade vanilla ice cream..no kidding! It was good beyond description...I had some but I shouldn't have. I will be cutting out all sugar tomorrow and try to detox!
I enjoyed hearing about all of your relatives that served our country. One of my friends told me today that her dad was in the Koren war and was actually in a POW camp and escaped by hiding for hours underneath a corpse until it was safe to make a getaway. Can you imagine?! Horrors.
Asa, I am coming up on my 10 year anniversary on the porch soon. Can't believe its been that long.

Oh, I haven't told you all a farm story in awhile. Something funny happened today when I went to feed the chickens and gather the one egg that Skippy lays each day. She has a little nest in one corner of the coop where she always lays her egg. I looked and there appeared to be two eggs in the nest but as I got closer, it was one egg and one golf ball! (?) I asked Bruce if he put it in there as a joke but he said no. He had been hitting some balls out in the back and apparently one landed there. Both of my kids never enter the coop because they are terrified of Bernie so I know they didn't do it. I told Bruce he had better watch out or he is going to kill on of my chickens with his golf balls! Any-hoo, that's the latest.

MDC, I don't have dial-up. My computers problem, I think, is it's just getting old. I think it's near capacity on it's memory, and I need to do something. Sometimes I can be on for an hour or so, and other times, I can't get on line at all, for a couple days. Can't afford a new one, or even to get this one looked at, but I think she's got a little life in 'er yet, so hopefully I can still pop by now and again.

What a day. I ended up spending the biggest part of the day in the ER with Sean. He has been having nausea on and off for about a month and on Saturday it got worse and he was throwing up. He had a couple of good days with just a little nausea and then this morning it was terrible so i took him to the doctor. The doctor noticed that he had some right side pain so he sent us to the ER thinking it might be his appendix or gall bladder. After all the tests, they showed nothing so now we are back to square one. They gave him something for nausea and said if it didn't get better we will need to see a specialist. He is feeling better now but it won't last. To make matters worse got an ugly email from sis-in-law that upset me...until I realized she is a total nut case. The funny part is after we left the ER and I went to the Walgreens to leave Sean's prescription, While I was standing in line at the pharmacy, there a few feet from me was a display of inspirational books and one jumped out at me like a beacon. It was called, "Setting Boundaries eith Difficult People"...I jumped on it like am egret on a goldfish (no offense, Ro). hehe. I am reading it TONIGHT.
Well, seem to be getting a ferocious headache (wonder if it could be tension? ha). Off for some advil and a heating pad. Please remember Sean in your prayers...that we find some answers for him. He was so, so sick this morning.

MDC, I had been about to announce the answer of your Seinfeld question, then I saw you answered it yourself! I love that ep. Whoever would have figured that the lie George made up about being a Marine Biologist would back fire like that, haha. From the crowd: "Is anyone here a Marine Biologist?". Too funny.
I'm sorry about Sean, Boo. It's bad enough having a sick child, but to have them sick, and not know what's wrong with them is awful.
Sorry about your SIL too. Some people really need mental help, that's all I can say. I've got a nutty SIL myself, btw.

May 29, 2012 - Msg 88783:
Good evening, porch. Boo, I'm sorry Sean is having problems. Knowing how sensitive he is, and considering all the tension and stress in your family right now, I wonder if that could be at the root of it all? Just a thought... As for the SIL, I'm thinking that just turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to her shenanigans might be a good idea. It takes two to make a fight, an argument, or even a discussion. If you just simply don't respond, nothing, nada - she'll be left standing there feeling frustrated and a little silly. She'll probably step up her efforts to irritate you or insult you, but if you continue to just ignore her bad behavior, but respond kindly if she should accidentally say something civil, she will just have no one to fight with. It keeps you out of trouble, and (heehee) will drive her even nuttier than she already is!
Hazel, it's been so nice having you on the porch here lately. We miss you when you have to be away. I hope your 'puter troubles will improve. Have you considered having some memory added to it? That can usually be done very reasonably, and it does help. Also, as MDC suggested, just clearing a lot of old stuff off helps, too. It's amazing how much stuff lives on our computers that we no longer need, or never needed.
My friend Ted came today and fixed some things around here. He moved the power source over about three feet, so the pump we replaced in the drainage system could be connected. It's now working and will keep the back yard from flooding in the event of a heavy rain - so now I can start praying for rain again! He also replaced the transformer box out front that controls my low-voltage landscape and security lights. They've been out for weeks - I would reset the timer, and they'd come on, but the next night they wouldn't. Finally the timer just quit moving completely. The new box is a digital timer, no moving dial - much easier to set and more reliable, not as likely to wear out. He also helped me finish setting up the two beautiful globe lights I got for the back yard. They're so pretty out there, and really provide a nice light source. Since I spend a lot of time sitting in front of this window at night, I really don't like for the yard to be in total darkness. I'd hate to think someone could be standing out there, unseen by me, but watching me. The yard is not lit up, but the periphery is, along the fence lines, so if anything moves out there, I can see it in silhouette. Makes me feel much more secure.
Well, I have two doc appointments tomorrow, won't get a nap, and have to work tomorrow night, so guess I'd better consider going on to bed a little early. Blessings, friends -- Romeena

oh and Ro, concerning Sean...yes, there has been some added anxiety but I don't know how that could make him as sick as he seemed to be this morning. Could be, though. Tonight he was so worried that he would wake up sick again in the morning that I read scriptures to him and prayed for him to calm him. He is finally asleep now, bless his heart. You know how it is to watch your kids suffer, and like Hazel said, it is harder when you don't know what is wrong. I know the Lord loves Sean and will be with him so that helps so much.
I am still waiting for Bruce to get home from work. It is so late but there was some important project he had to stay and finish. I am one of those who can't go to sleep until all my family members are home and safe.
