Good morning, porch. Would you believe it's 48 DEGREES here today?? Wow! I'm loving the "sound of silence" coming from the a/c compressor. It's almost sweater weather. The flowers are loving it too.
No, G-F, I'm not sending my squirrels anywhere! In fact, I may acquire a few. This is too funny, so just gotta tell you. You all know about Jerry, Eloise's husband - I think I've mentioned him before. Anyway, he has a huge pecan tree in their front yard, and the pecans are just wonderful. Big, sweet, full-meated things that are so good. Unfortunately, the local squirrels agree, and are doing their best to strip the tree. Jerry has "declared jihad" against them. He has fitted that tree with all sorts of devices intended to keep the squirrels out of it. None have worked, of course. Well, yesterday I pulled into their driveway and just sat there laughing my head off. There, under the tree, is a cage-type live trap, baited with an apple! He's trying to catch them now! When Eloise got in the car, I asked her what he was planning to do with the squirrels if he catches them. Without missing a beat, she replied, "Well, bring them to your house, of course!" Hahahaha! Naturally, I told her to just bring 'em on, - in fact, just call me and I'll come get them. I just wish you could see that trap sitting out there, with a big old apple down in one end. Too funny!
Yep, REV will be here around 2 p.m. It will be so nice to see him again. I wish everyone could meet him. He's truly a Southern gentleman, and so very talented. I'm proud to call him my friend.
Maudie, your friend will need all the prayerful support she can get. I remember back in 1979-80, when I was taking chemo. The drugs I was receiving made me violently ill right there at the time of treatment, but it didn't carry over. Between treatments, I just felt crummy, like I had the flu, but not the violent throwing up and all that happened at the doc's office. Still, after about #18, I informed my dear husband that I was through, wasn't going to finish the course of 24. He looked me square in the eyes, and said, "Get in the car. You are going, if I have to put you over my shoulder cave-man style and carry you there. No argument. Get in the car." He meant it, and guess what? I got in the car! It is now 32 years later, and I'm still cancer-free. Gotta love that man!
Well, off I go. Got to rake the house out, and maybe bathe this little dirty girl that's running around my feet. REV may get to come by for a glass of tea, and I've got to clear a path in the clutter so he can get in! Blessings, all. --Romeena

Romeena, I'm sure your squirrels don't want to lose a good thing, sounds like you got em spoiled real good! Reminds me remember of a funny chipmunk story..My Aunt&Uncle had a cabin in upper Michigan and I would go up for parts of the summers. They had a chipmunk they called "Notch" cause he had a chunk of his tail missing from a fight. My Aunt made him a little porch in the tree outside her kitchen window for him to eat his daily cantalop seeds she would save for him.
It was funny he'd waite every morning for them and when he was done he'd "sweep" his porch clean to get ready for the next day.

Been a long day...really would like to take a day off, but can't. I am going to have to take my dad to the doc tomorrow morning. His circulation is terrible and he was wearing a new pair of sandals that rubbed a sore on one of his toes and now he is getting an ulcer on the toe and it has turned purple. No infection yet, but it might be a problem getting it to heal.
I am really tired tonight, so i had better get to bed. Erin and I watched a couple of TAGS eps tonight and really enjoyed it. We watched a couple of the eps with Peggy.
See you all tomorrow.

Hi, porch! What a lovely evening I've had! REV's concert was wonderful, several brand-new songs and some old favorites, and all so beautiful. He does a great job - wish everyone could hear him. Afterward, we came back here and just visited for a while, then I took him back up to the church where the motorhome is parked. Tomorrow we're going out to Babe's for some of their wonderful fried chicken. I am very upset because of all things, I'm scheduled to work tomorrow night, and he's going to be here until Saturday morning! I didn't schedule it, I think our manager adjusted the schedule - she has to sometimes, and I understand that, but it sure is working against me this time. I can't even trade with anyone, because we're at the end of the pay period and there's no time. So, I guess I'll just be thankful for the time we've had, and move on. Honestly! When I only work two nights out of seven, please tell me how it always manages to land on something I really want to do? Amazing.
Now I'm headed for the ironing board. It's been a long, though thoroughly enjoyable day! --Romeena

Good Friday morning all. The weekend is about on us. As I have gotten older I have figured out how the term "weekend" came about, and have also come to realize I've been spelling it wrong all these years. By Friday my end is geeting plenty weak, thus weekend, or weak end. With age comes wisdom. :)
Glad you had a nice visit with the Rev Ro. To bad you have to work. Did he bring his goose down pillow? And thanks for the recipies. I look forward to trying them.
Boo, I bet you are a great neighbor. I wish we lived closer also. I am blessed to have such good neighbors and fellow church members who are always wanting to bring food over. And both Daughters only live a few minutes away and are always more than willing to lend a hand. What a blessing they are to me and my wife. They both turned out to be delightful young women. I love them to pieces.
I sure hope your friend gets on the mend Maude. That must be so hard. My prayers continue for her and for Miss Sherry.
MDC, 90's huh? I think we've seen our last 90's here for the season. Probably even our last 80's. We might hit 70 this weekend they say, but then a cold front moves in next week, so I imagine this weekend will be our last 70's for a good long while. But it has been a fantastic Fall here. No complaints, at least not until January. Then lookout. I'll be sobbing like a baby. :)
Y'all have a good day and act like you got some smarts. Ro, maybe you can take Rev and show him the new pavement for the parking lot at the gas works. I'm sure he'll be impressed.

Sorry you have to work when you don't want to, Ro. I remember how that felt real well...seems like the days you want to work the least end up being the very ones you always work.
Well, I got my first pair of prescription eyeglasses yesterday. They are those progressive lenses and take some getting used to but my distance vision is amazing. When I was in Corpus Christi yesterday by the bay, I thought I could see Cuba *wink*...well, not really but I felt like I had Superman vision. I was watching some TAGS dvds on my HDTV and I swear I could see things I couldn't believe. Did you all know that Thelma Lou has freckles?...LOTS of them...on her arms and around her eyes. Andy has a small mole on the left side of his neck and Barney has a vein that sticks out on the left side of his forehead...oh, and Aunt Bee....well, she has all kinds of little moles and things.

Oh my Boo, you're cracking me up. You ever watch Everybody Loves Raymond. Your experience sounds just like an episode. The family had finally talked Marie (Ray's Mom) into buying some glasses. She does, and begins to point out every little flaw in everyone. From the gray in Ray's sideburns, to Debra's lack of eyelashes, to Roberts wrinkles in his face. Of course each one goes to an extreme to counter it. Funny stuff.
Spot, sure glad Sherry is having a good day buddy. Thanks to the Lord.
Sorry about your loss G-F. It is the circle of life I reckon though.
Well I guess I'll mosey my way to bed. Read for a bit until the eyelids say enough, and then lights out. I don't think I'll make preachin in the morning. I'm getting over a cold that has settled in my chest. I can't go more than a few minutes without hacking and barking. I'm sure folks don't wanna hear that. So I'll stay home and rest. Watch a little football, take a little nap, watch a little more football. Yep, that's the plane, football, nap, football.... all in all it's a fun day.

October 22, 2011 - Msg 85994:
Good evening, porch! Well, I got through the shift last night - spent my first night as the sole nurse in the nursery (not counting the special care nursery) - that's another whole story, and so far, they haven't required us to work in there. Anyway, it was interesting. There are a couple of little paperwork procedures they've "always done this way" that are ridiculous, to say nothing of time consuming, and are basically done because the pediatricians are too rotten-spoiled to take a minute to look something up for themselves. A nurse spends a couple of hours working up a summary for them so they don't have to open a chart and spend two minutes getting their own information. It's dumb, and I'm going to try to get it changed. I'll probably get my beak bent, but I can still try.
G-F, I'm sorry about your squirrel experience. I know how that feels. I don't know if I ever shared this, but here goes. Several years ago, when my neighbors were harboring big old rats in their garage, the critters started coming over here, just boldly sitting on my bird feeders and staring me down. So I bought a humane live trap, baited it, and ultimately caught six of them. I carried them down to the river bottom about a mile away and released them, one by one. Anyway, I came home from church one Sunday morning and to my horror there was a little squirrel in the trap. I should have known that would happen, but didn't think about it. Anyway, the poor little fellow was terrified, had gotten one foot wedged in the wire of the trap somehow, and I had a time freeing him. I finally got him out, but he was in shock, and actually just died before my eyes. I was devastated! I buried him beneath the tree they always play in, and was sad for days. I put the trap away, and have never used it again. So - based on that experience, I'm pretty sure your little squirrel wouldn't have survived anyway, but might have suffered for a while. As it happened, the hawk put a quick end to what could have been a very miserable time, for both you and the squirrel. As Boo said, it's the circle of life. It's too bad that they have to fall victim to cars - I just hate that. That's not a natural thing, and I wish it didn't happen, but it does. By the way, on one of his CDs, REV sings a lovely song about the wild things, and having a care for them.
Speaking of REV, yesterday I picked him up about 11:30, and we went out to Babe's and had that fried chicken, and smashed taters and gravy, and some goood biscuits! Eloise went with us, and we had a great time. We lingered at the table for over an hour after we finished eating, just laughing and talking. Eloise went on out to Dave and Brittney's house to take care of our grandsons while D&B went to the state fair, and REV and I ran a couple of little errands and then came back here to the house. We fed my fish, and I showed him the Angel Face roses, and then we sat in the house and visited until time for me to go to work. I dropped him off at the church, where his rig was parked, and reluctantly went to work. We had a great time. He's so pleasant and so easy to talk to, just a gentleman all the way. And -- he's already scheduled to come back next year!
Well, guess I'll eat a bite and then head for bed and see if I can sleep. After working last night, I've slept in my chair quite a bit today, got a big old crick in my neck, and probably won't sleep tonight. Oh well. Blessings, friends! --Romeena

Asa, I can't believe i didn't think about that episode of "Raymond"! haha I am certainly familiar with that one. Next to TAGS, Raymond is my favorite sitcom. I think my favorite episode would probably be the time Raymond tries to give Marie just the right Christmas present and he gathers the family for a family portrait. Debra's parents show up to be in the picture and Marie starts pouting and refusing to be in the picture. That ep just has so many funny things going on in it! I love it when Frank calls Debra's dad, "Senor Windbag" and when Raymond goes all "dog day afternoon" on everyone at the end. :) I used to watch alot of Raymond but sometimes it isn't appropriate for Erin and she always wants to watch TV with me so I don't really watch it anymore. Erin never gets tired of TAGS, bless her heart. We watch ALOT of it.

Let me tell you, when you lose your "taster", as happens with some of the chemo drugs, you just plain don't want to eat. It really just gets hard to even swallow, and you just can't eat. I'm glad her taste is returning.
Tom, it's good to hear from you. Don't be such a stranger - we miss you. I'm sorry you're having problems with your stepdad. It's so good of you to care for him like you do.
Would you believe we have only 59 chilly and foggy degrees here this morning. When I first came to my window, I could barely see the back fence! It's clearing now, but it was pretty. I've always liked fog, unless I have to drive in it. It gives an eerie, dream-like quality to everything.
Well, gotta work tonight. Guess I'd better get a few things done around here, then maybe catch a little nap before I go in. I can make it without the nap, but 3 a.m. is a bit more comfortable if I've had at least an hour of sleep beforehand. I've been doing this for fifteen years now, and in my experience, one's body never fully makes the turn-around. We're just not nocturnal animals, no matter how hard we try. When it's night, we want to sleep! I've always liked to stay up late, but somewhere after midnight, I want my bed.

OK Boo and MDC. I'm not the only EBLR fan it sounds like. I think my favorite episode is when Ray lies to Debra about what some women in the PTA said about her dressing trampy. Well, looks like I'm the first one up this morning. I went to bed too late but I went to check on the eggs in the incubator because yesterday was the 21st day (hatching day) and there was a chick starting to peck a hole in one of the eggs so i watched for a bit and could see him in there and he was breathing. Sometimes it takes hours and hours so i went to bed. When I got up this morning around six, there was a new chick all hatched out. :) Totally new experience for me. I have never had a newly-hatched chick. I think he might be the only one, though...I see no signs of the others hatching. Poor chick is chirping up a storm, either wanting his mom or his breakfast. I have to go to the feed store as soon as it opens and get him some grub. I am saying "He" for no reason at all because I have no idea. From his "vocality" I am guessing he might be a "she" (jk). He is some KIND of loud! He is mostly covered with dark down with some yellow markings and has a dark beak. I don't even have an idea what kind of chicken he is because I was given an assortment of eggs. I can tell that he is a good-sized one, though. Wish me luck...I've never been a chicken mother before.

Well our baby chick is so much fun. He/she is already so friendly and wants to be with us all the time. I figured out that he is a Black Jersey Giant breed, which means he will be a large chicken with all black feathers that gave a green sheen to them when he is grown. he will have a bright red crest and weigh between 11 and 13 pounds. Jersey Giant chickens are generally thought of as the most friendly chicken and the males aren't agressive. They will bond with humans and are great pets.

I've been busy...sorry haven't posted much. Seems like I never get any time off anymore.
SPOT, thanks for the update on Miss Sherry. So glad she was able to drive herself to church...don't you just know that made God smile?
You're funny, Auh2o. :)
I found out this week that one of my dearest friends has breast cancer. She will be going to MD Anderson Cancer hospital in Houston soon. Don't know yet how bad it is. I feel for her. She is my childhood friend, Cynthia, that I know I have mentioned before. I just attended her mother's funeral last month. Cynthia is divorced and trying to care for her elderly father. Luckily she has a son who quit his job and moved down to help the family (bless his heart). She has been going through so much and now this. She needs to find peace with God, too.
Me and Erin and my niece, Macy put together a scarecrow today to set on the front porch with the pumpkins and my crazy dog was terrified of it. You should have seen her. After barking in terror, she ran all the way to the front gate, which is at least 50 yards from the house, and wouldn't come any closer. She finally slunk to the back yard with her tail between her legs and her head low. Crazy dog!
Better go get some dinner...I am getting a "low sugar blood content" as barney would say.
Oh, by the way, I am pretty certain my chick is a boy. I saw an episode of Dirty Jobs in which they were at a hatchery and showing how to tell the boys from the girls by looking at their wing tips. If they are right, our chicken is definitely a boy. Erin wants to name him "Bernie" (after Barney in the fun girls episode).

"Thelma Lou" but.....then you would have to put in a duck pond for them to go to:)...Romeena can give you tips on putting one in..sounds like she's got it down pat now...just a thought..
Asa, suppose to have a chance of snow flurries by the week-end. Just ask TOM about the "lake effect" snows we get from Lake Erie until it freezes over. Auh2o may get them up his way too.

Hey G-D, we get those lake effect snow storms here as well. It's pretty amazing. Depending on the wind direction, one area will get just a few inches, while just a few miles away, another place will receive a foot or more. Pretty odd if you've never seen it before. I imagine the Great Lakes area is even more pronounced.
Sorry to hear about your friend Boo. I hope they caught it early. That seems to be the key.
I suppose I better get going.
Prayers for all.

Boo-Prayers for your friend, she does have so much on her plate already.
G-F Yes, we get Lake Effect snow here. Lake Erie is pointed at us like a barrel of a gun. We average a bit over 200 inches of snow a year here. There was a stretch a few years ago when we got 6 feet of lake-snow in one week. That was kinda crazy.

Good morning porch, just stopping by from work today. lots to do but I'd rather sit and rock.
Prayers for your friend BOO, for Miss Sherry and SPOT and everyone else. Seems like we are all struggling with something.
My friend is doing better physically and is trying very hard to stay strong mentally. She said her hair is beginning to come out so she is mentally getting ready to either cut it short or shave it all off. She has shoulder length hair so it will be a big change for her. She already has a wig, and has several scarves and a hat. With winter coming on she will need something to keep her head warm. She has her 2nd round next Wednesday. She is eating better now and is getting her strength back. Hopefully, the next round won't affect her as badly.
We are definitely having fall days around here. Cool mornings, warmer afternoons and cool nights.
We have had a couple of frosty mornings. Leaves are beautiful but falling off the trees.
well since I missed breakfast here is our lunch menu: grilled hot dogs with chili and all the fixins including SLAW, potato chips, chocolate cream cheese brownies, tea, lemonade to drink.
have a blessed day. prayers for everyone.

Good morning, porch! Very chilly here today (for Texas) - it's 57 degrees. I will probably wear a jacket when I go to meet Eloise in a little while. Haven't worn a jacket in months! Now you understand, a "jacket" to me is a little lightweight thing, more like a long-sleeved shirt. In fact, some of my jackets are exactly that. I buy men's work shirts in solid colors and wear them over t-shirts. They make great transition jackets, but couldn't be any stretch of imagination be called a coat. Still, it is getting cooler here, and in a week or so I'll have to move that enormous plumeria tree into the garage. It won't tolerate anything below 40 degrees. Around here, once the cooling begins, it could drop to freezing at a moment's notice, so I've got to be vigilant. I sure don't want to lose that tree. It's one of the focal points of the back yard.
Joe and George were here on Tuesday, and got a lot done. The eleagnus shrubs that have been trained to hug the fence were sending long canes out everywhere, but they're under control now. I pruned the roses a little, though more needs to be done. The main thing, we created one more flowerbed, a long sliver-like crescent just east of the walkway. The curve mirrors the curve of the walkway, but there's about five feet of grass between them. We anchored it with a pair of pretty boulders, and filled it with pansies. Between Christmas and New Year, I'll plant it solid full of tulip bulbs, with some hyacinths against the rocks, and some daffodils scattered in. The daffodils will spread, but the tulips and probably the hyacinths will have to be replanted every year. I'll try to dig the bulbs and refrigerate them until time to replant, but that usually doesn't work too well here.
By the way - that little email that some of you got, the radio ad - just FYI, my daughter knows that man, and even produced some of his ads when she was with the radio station in Fredericksburg. Here's what she had to say about him: "He is all about the Constitution. He's blunt, gruff, very well educated and traveled, and can tell a million stories." She says he's a very nice guy, who has a genuine concern for the future of America. So - that one was authentic. Don't you just love it? Nowhere but in Texas! Hahaha!
Well, gotta run. Blessings, everyone! --Romeena

October 27, 2011 - Msg 86029:
Hey back atcha, Sp00ky! Long time no see. Come by more often, hear?
MDC, the term IV push simply means that the medication is literally being "pushed" into an IV line from a syringe held by a nurse, as opposed to the standard "drip" IV, that either flows by gravity or is helped and managed by a pump. IV narcotics are generally given this way, as are any number of other drugs. Most antibiotics are "piggybacked" through an IV line, connected to the main line and allowed to flow in with the continuous IV fluid. IV push means just exactly what the name implies - it's pushed into the line, rather than flowing on its own.
It's still just 55 here, going to get colder tonight. I hope my plumeria doesn't bite the dust. I can't manage it on my own, it's about ten feet tall, and lives in a big pot of dirt - probably well over a hundred pounds in all. Because of the size and weight, it takes two men to wrestle it into the garage. Guess I'll just have to wait until a couple of guys come along - my David is out of town, but will be home this weekend. Or - I may call Joe and see if he and Jorge can swing by and put the thing to bed.
Well, gotta run. Going to my SS teacher's house tonight to pack boxes for the Samaritan's Purse endeavor - shoe boxes filled with little fun and/or useful goodies for children. We do this every year, usually fill about a hundred boxes. We buy the stuff all through the year and save it up, then have a big old box-filling party, and a lot of fun. Pat will have a big pot of chili and some cornbread, and there will be something sweet and gooey, no doubt, and lots of laughs.
Blessings! --Romeena

Sorry your still so hot Boo. I know how you dislike that. How's Bernie doing? One of my favorite TAGS lines is about chicken. Morning. It finally cooled of here, Asa. It's about 55 this morning but will warm up to almost 80. Nice, really. Oh, and Bernie the chicken is doing just fine. I was afraid I hurt him yesterday, though. Erin had him out running around in the living room and all of a sudden she started crying and saying, "I have a sticker in my butt and I can't get it out!". She had been scooting around on the floor and had actually gotten a big wood splinter in her tushi. She was crying her eyes out and I couldn't get her to let me near it to get it out, then the phone started ringing, and when I went to get it I kicked the chick. Not too bad but it scared me. Anyway, I put the chicken back up and eventually Erin let me get the splinter out of her back end (just a typical day around here). The chick is fine, though (and so is Erin).
I'm glad its Friday, too! Today is Bruce's birthday (he is 54) so I will make his favorite cookies and we will go out for dinner tonight. He decided that what he wanted to do for his birthday is just go out with his family for dinner.

Asa, which email do you mean? What was the subject line? I've sent two or three recently, so I'm not sure which one you couldn't open.
This business of getting old is just wearing me out. I planted one flat - just ONE flat, mind you - of pansies yesterday evening, and this morning I couldn't walk without my cane for about the first half hour after I got up. Missed my appointment to get my hair cut and everything! I'm more mobile now, and she can get me in later in the day, but I really hate to abuse someone's schedule like that. Just a couple of years ago, I could get out there and plant things all afternoon. Maybe I'd be a little sore, but not just stiffened up like the Tin Man after a rain. One stinkin' flat of pansies, and I'm done in. I'm just hating this. Doctors are no help. Three different ones have essentially told me to get used to it, it ain't gonna change. Humph!
Well, guess I'll try to get a little bit done around here. My back has loosened up enough that I can at least walk - kinda crooked, but I can walk. Guess there's always something to be thankful for. There are those who can't, crooked or otherwise. So, I count my blessings.
Have a great day, friends. --Romeena
