December 21, 2010 - Msg 82037: Happy Birthday, Spot, you good ol' doggie!

Otis, (Rick) it's good to see you. It's been a long time! At the moment, no one else is using the "Otis" handle, to my knowledge. Also, to answer your question, I don't think there is anything set up to text the postings to anyone. I wouldn't bet the ranch, but I've not heard that mentioned. Floyd indeed does an excellent job of running the porch - keeps it swept, checks up on us to see if we need anything, and runs off the occasional varmint that drops by, though that happens only rarely. He's a gem!

Speaking of varmints, my back yard is full of squirrels. Must be at least seven or eight out there, maybe more. My grandsons put out a lot of feed before they left on Sunday, and it's almost all gone. They filled the tray feeder with sunflower seeds (cardinals), made little piles of cracked corn on the stones (doves), put chopped apple, some aging baby carrots and a few nuts on the stones (squirrels) and filled the bird feeder with all-purpose seed (everybody). Of course the squirrels will eat all of those things, but they do enjoy the fruit and carrots. It's such fun to watch one of the little bandits run up and grab a carrot, take it up to the first limb and sit there and munch away until the carrot is gone! The apple pieces are usually consumed on the spot, because they can eat them faster. Carrots take longer!

Well, off I go. Errands to run, and I have to work tonight, so better get moving. Merry Christmas! --Romeena

TOM, I am glad to learn that your furnace problem has been fixed. You had two angels working on your problem. And you know both of them. The female angel lives far from you but is here on the Front Porch. And the male angel lives near you.

And a welcome back to Rick also known as Otis. In your Msg 82059, are you claiming that you haven't been here during the past 13 years? I've seen postings by an Otis back on November 11, 2009 here looking for a Miss Peggy and a Charlie Waxxman. Was that you?

And, Yes, that was me in 2009 looking for Leon (aka Waxman/charlie) and Miss Peggy.

Poor Horatio-Those are some interesting Porch numbers ya got figured. I have to agree with Hazel it was all the political talk, which I still feel a little bad about. Some of my posts, even non-political ones, sound kinda pointed after I read them back. I guess I need a sarcasm or inflection font because I would never mean to disrespect any of my Porch friends opinions. Politics and history have been my hobby since Nixon resigned and sometimes I get I little carried away.

auh2o, your first posting here was Msg 16535 on November 11, 2003 . Just thought you would like to know.
It's funny when you mention that you believe some of our political rants have driven some of the regulars away. In my situation, it was the opposite. After reading through a lot of family talk being posted here, I would get bored, lose interest, and disappear for a time. The politics (and other non-Mayberry topics) is what made this place interesting to visit and why I don't visit the other Mayberry forums as much. Please understand that I don't mind the family talk. I just prefer it mixed with other topics. Variety is the spice of life and what keeps my interest.
But I also enjoy helping people with my internet searching skill. So although you won't see me posting all the time when I visit here, when someone has a question (like you had in Msg 82066), if I see it, that will usually generate a post from me.

Hello porch family

Happy Birthday Spot!

Missed you guys yesterday. I was hanging out with a good friend of mine who was having a concert in Augusta, Ga. Some of you may remember John Berry from the 80's and 90's in country music. Has one of the best voices in the business. One of his big hits was "Your Love Amazes Me". He had several #1s. You can google it and hear it. Also got to meet and hang out with one John's good friend (Dave from the group Lady Antebellum-not sure if that's spelled correct). Really nice guy. Serveral other songwriters were there so we just sit around all day and talked songwriting and swapping ideas.

auh2o.....hope you enjoy the recipes. They're good:)

Tom...that's great you got it all fixed up.

Hot chocolate weather here.

PH-Thanks for the info. So, MDC and I started rocking here about the same time, interesting. I know what ya meaning about the political chat. I've never been able to figure out why people get so upset discussing politics and religion, or any subject for that matter. I've always thought it was a lack in conviction of someone's thoughts or precepts. I've said it before but my feelings have never been hurt here on the Porch. To tell ya the truth, it's made me quite sad, in the past, to see when my posts have upset some of the good people here. There's been a few times when I've felt like a bull in a china shop.

REV-Yup, we've got our eyes on the CHICKEN TETRAZZINI and the CHOWDER. And, I'm with possum, color me impressed.

AUH2O: I don't stop by here but once in a blue moon anymore but that's sure not because of you or the talk of politics and religion. In my case, my reasons are personal.

Your posts may at times be pointed, but, to my mind at least, never rude. I know I was never offended by them. Your posts never seemed personally hurtful. In fact, I always found your posts--full of conviction, plain talk, and always a dash of humor--extremely welcome.

POOR HORATIO: You are one clever guy! When did I start posting?

Well, we are being furloughed between CHristmas and New Year's so I have all my year-end stuff to complete this week. Nose back to the grindstone!

Y'all have a very Merry--and very Mayberry--Christmas.

December 23, 2010 - Msg 82082: I'm here, MDC...thanks for asking about me. sorry to stay away so long but this is my busiest time of year (Santa's and mine;-)!
Wanted to drop in and say "hey". though. Maude, let me know when you are going to watch the christmas ep and I'll be right over. I have not watched it yet. I always save it for just the right time.

Wonderful to see Hazel, Auh2o and OTIS on the porch. Welcome home for Christmas, Otis.

Nothing new to report here on this end of the porch...just been getting ready for Christmas. Have to go to the store for the makings of Christmas dinner. We have decided to keep it simple this year because we are all exhausted from all we have done this season. I have organized or hosted parties all month and we had our party for the girls at the rehab last monday. My friend Diane and I made over a hundered christmas cookies for the girls and they were a BIG hit. Had a great time with the girls..poor children stuck in that institution through Christmas but had good attitudes and lots of laughs had by all. So, anyway, we will be having chili and submarine sandwiches for Christmas dinner this year and that's alright with me.

I have had my departed friend, Karen's little girl Allison with me all week so Erin is having a great time. I took them to see the new Narnia movie this week and they loved it. I didn't really understand alot of it..guess I will have to pull out the book and read it.

Well, don't want to bore you all...wish I could come up with an interesting christmas story but I think you have heard them all by now. I have certainly enjoyed hearing some of your's, though.

I just thought of a cute one that I don't think I shared. When I was in high school I had an aunt and uncle that came down from Michigan every december and spent christmas with us...my aunt was named Virginia and to say she was eccentric would be putting it lightly...she was bonkers for the most part and she would come with a stack of photos of grandkids and people we didn't know and it was the joke each year to try to avoid getting trapped by her and her photos She used to make up the most outlandish stories about her grandkids (they were all genius, of course). We loved her, make no mistake, but boy that woman could talk the nose off Rudolph..which brings me to my story. One evening Aunt Virginia and I were sitting in the den watching the annual airing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, when we hear a knocking on the door leading from the garage into the den...."Who could that be?"...I got up to answer and nobody was at the door. 'Strange',I thought. We continued to watch the movie and a few minutes later it happened again...I went to the door and looked out the peep hole...nobody there but the knocking continued (I jumped away from that door so fast!). Now, how could someone invisible be knocking on the door unless it was a ghost?! We worked ourselves up to a panic right there, thinking we had a ghost at the door. Finally, I had the guts to open the door and sitting right against the door was the neighbor's weinie dog, intermittently wagging his tail, which made a knocking sound on the door. hehe..ok, it wasn't a great story but I can't think of Rudolph without remember aunt virginia and the knocking ghost.

Better get a move on...its almost Christmas!! Hohoho

December 23, 2010 - Msg 82091: Hey MDC, I could use some mulled cider, and good friends right about now. MIL has been here for a week already, and yesterday BIL and his wife showed up, while I was home sick from some stomach flu that's been going around work. That's better today, but still have the inlaws, and I am going to need prayers to hold my tongue if one of the presents I glimpsed of a Hello Kitty bookbag from BIL turns out to be intended for Kai. If you need a refresher on the reasoning for that, I can tell you, but I know I talked about it here and how much tension that stupid kitty has caused and I won't rehash that again. But I am pretty sure BIL would have known about it. So here's hoping it is intended for Kai's niece or something.

Now on to better things. Dietrich was your favorite on Barney Miller too, auh2o? Mine as well. I liked his wry humor so much that I did a report on Steve Landesburg for some class in high school.

Here's to finding the true feeling of Christmas in all of our hearts this year. I am hoping to go to the candle-light service at the church, just to get away from(no, not the crowd at my house, but good thought) the chaos and stress that is the world's Christmas, and get to the real warmth and true gift-giving, that is the Lord's Christmas. Don't know if anyone else will go - they will be welcome to- but Kai has said she will go with me, and has even thought about asking her little niece to go.

December 25, 2010 - Msg 82104: MERRY CHRISTMAS, PORCH! Just got home from spending a lovely evening with my son and his sweet wife, the two grandsons, and of course Eloise and Jerry (DIL's parents) and Brittney's sister and her family. We went to Christmas Eve services at their church, and it was just lovely. We've gone there on Christmas Eve for the past two or three years, and it's always such a beautiful service. My own church has services of course, and they're beautiful too, but I enjoy going with my kids and meeting their pastor and some of their friends. My son is teaching SS now, and I really like to support their involvement with their church.

"There has only been one Christmas...the rest have been anniversaries." Thanks, REV. That one is going in my collection of memorable truths.

On a lighter note - for all the years I've had lighted reindeer in the yard at Christmas, I've had problems with them tripping the GFCI when it rains. We have had no rain up until tonight, so have not had a problem. We did get a light drizzle in the early evening though, so naturally I had no Christmas lights on Christmas Eve. Oh well. However, I think I'm not the only one who has had this experience with rain causing breakers to trip. On my way over to Eloise and Jerry's tonight, I passed a house with several deer in the front yard, and they were wearing little plastic raincoats! Very cute, and very resourceful. I'll have to try it.

Good to see Asa, and Me-They, MD and others passing through. Sure do with you'd come home and stay a while, or at least visit more often. You are missed. If I left anyone off, it wasn't intentional. Chalk it up to the fact that I worked last night, slept about two hours today, and it's now 1 a.m. I'm beat to the socks, am going to cuddle up in a comfortable bed with my little furkid, and we're going to sleep on this Christmas morning, until we wake up. No clocks. Blessings, porch, and Merry Christmas. God bless us, everyone! --Romeena

December 25, 2010 - Msg 82118: Merry Christmas folks. Had a great day with family, lots of food, togetherness and presents. Everyone has gone now so we are settling down for some quite family time. We have a white Christmas on my end of the porch. It has snowed off and on all day, mostly accumulating on the ground, so the main travel roads and side streets have stayed relatively clear. My husbands brothers came to visit for the day from Knoxville (about 2 hours away) so they should get home safely.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Blessing and prayers all around.

December 26, 2010 - Msg 82126: Happy birthday, MDC!

Well, Christmas was not white here but it was cold, which I love. We had the fireplace roaring all day and evening. Had most of the family here for dinner but the evening was quiet and very enjoyable when most folks went home...ha! My sister hung around for awhile and we laughed alot then I played a game with the kids (Apples to Apples). Didn't get to bed until after 1am. I just didn't want to let go of Chrismtas. Now I have to figure out how to pack up and store all of these christmas decorations. Will leave most of it in place until after new years. I took a stroll up the long driveway to the road last night and it was so cold and crisp...very clear night with a sky full of bright starts. I had a talk with the Lord and told him thanks. Walking back I could see the house all lit up and cozy-looking. We are so blessed in the great country of ours. May the Lord give us many more years of freedom.

Enjoyed the videos! Better go get ready for preachin' this morning.

December 27, 2010 - Msg 82136: Mornin' everyone. Hope you are all recovering from the weekend. I am looking around at a mess! We had a good day yesterday and I didn't do much so now things have to be straightened up, laundry finished and I am going to start putting away some of the Christmas clutter. I am going to leave up the tree and garland until after new years but the other stuff has to go!

I kind of dread the chore because I have to put the christmas dishes way up in the top cabinets and bring down the other dishes that go in the cabinet and that requires a ladder.

Think I will just finish my coffee and check the weather report first. It was mighty cool here the past few days and we kept a fire in the fireplace all weekend. We didn't have to use the heater and it stayed about 70 degrees in the house during the day. I expect it will be warming up today, though.

Sean bought himself a bike with his christmas money this year. Its a Huffy and looks like a bike from the 60's...really neat. I even rode it yesterday. Maybe I will ride it again today.

Talk to you all later.

Boo
