November 22, 2009 - Msg 76236: Wow, a grandson, ASA?! Now, that's something to be thankful for this year! Prayers for a safe delivery and very healthy baby. It does seem like many women have labor induced these days for convenience sake but there are still some valid medical reasons to induce, which may be the case with your daughter. I never did because I had preterm labor and both of my kids were born early, which was nice since they were only 6 lbs. :-)

Ro, I have never seen the Winkler movie you mentioned, I don't think. I will have to watch for it but we don't get Hallmark channel.

Sean and I stayed up last night and watched a really good one called "The Christmas Wish", with Debbie Reynolds and the guy who used to be Doogie Howser (forgot his name). What a great ending and good moral. If you ever get the chance to watch it, do so but have some tissues at the end.

Gotta get ready for preachin'!

November 22, 2009 - Msg 76237: Hey, porch. I'm back from church, and home for the day, I think. I went to preaching first, at 8:15, then to SS, then went out to lunch with friends. There were nine of us, and it was hilarious. There are three (including me) who don't hear as well as we used to. One wears aids, so she was okay. I have sense enough to seat myself in the middle of a long table, so I usually manage. However, we have one who always insists on sitting at the end of a long table "so I can see everybody and have lots of elbow room" and then she can't hear anything that's said at the other end of the table. We could wring her neck, because half the meal is spent repeating things to her. She's a hoot. I guess every church has one like her. Bossy, critical, too outspoken - "I can't believe you would shop at Chico's. It's sinful to spend that much money on clothes. You should try Wal-Mart." She's the authority on child-rearing, though she has none. "Well, I wouldn't put up with that. I'd yank that kid in line right quick!" She's quick to tell everyone how to keep their husband in line too, yet freely admits that she and her husband share an address only. They have separate bedrooms, cook their own separate meals, and often go days without seeing or speaking to each other. All of this - and then she's the first one to show up when there's a job to be done around the church. She supports the Upward Basketball youth ministry, is there for every game. Of course, she's also quick to berate those of us who aren't involved, no matter our reason. She's a pain, but we love her. We may drown her some day, but we love her.

Well, enough of that. What a beautiful day! It's 64 degrees, sunny with a few scattered clouds and a light breeze. My flowers are just loving it!

Toye Starr is ready for a nap, as indicated by tiny paws on my ankle, and an occasional soft woof! Guess I'll go get in our chair, and she'll climb up on my chest and stretch out, and fall asleep. Won't be long until I'll be asleep too. You just can't stay awake when a small, warm, limp puppy body is stretched across your chest, and you can barely feel the rhythmic breathing. It's like a lullaby.

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

Thanks for coming to the hayride. It was surprisingly warm. But the bonfire afterwards went until 2am. This was one tired New Neighbor!!! The kids didn't mind, they just cuddled up under sleeping bags and talked till the wee hours of the night. What fun!!!
Well, it's a beautiful day here, and I thnk I'm gonna take a walk... see ya. ~New Neighbor

November 22, 2009 - Msg 76240: Good evening, porch. Congrats, Asa, on that boy! A friend of mine from church got a new grandbaby this morning - another girl. This woman has three daughters and one son, and from them she has ten granddaughters and one grandson, and now another granddaughter. Her only son is the new dad, and this makes his third daughter. I'll bet in years to come when they have family reunions, you'll be able to smell the estrogen before you get to the door! It's so funny, because out of my nine grandkids, we only had one girl. Then along came a step-granddaughter, so now it's two out of ten, but it's still pretty uneven.

REV, praying that your concert touches many hearts for God, and I'm really glad you're getting to spend some time at home. I still can't believe Erica is already out of college. Seems like she just started. It's great that you're getting to enjoy little Jake more now. He's such a cute little thing. I'll bet he and Toye Starr would be good friends. Starr thinks everyone loves her, and mostly, she's right.

Well, I'm headed back to the TAGS mini-marathon on TVLand. I've put it on pause, and now I can restart it and then zip through commercials for a while. I do that a lot - I just love that feature.

Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

Kinda strange to have four kids in a family and four of them have only one child. I was the only one to break the curse. ;-) When everyone found out i was having a girl it was like they were in shock...'It couldn't be...after all these years'!. All the other kids were grown by this time. My kids are much younger than all the others. Luckily Matthew has three kids and they live nearby so Erin has someone to play with.

Well, should finish my coffee and get moving. I woke up this morning and this thought came to me: 'I only have 2 weeks to pack up everything for moving!!!'...help!

November 23, 2009 - Msg 76244: Oh hey...I haven't heard you tell me what you are all doing for thanksgiving yet??

We had our annual church thanksgiving dinner last night and there was so much food! Good stuff, too. Wish you could have been there. It was not as much fun this year for some reason, though. They did sing a few songs and some people got up to say what they were thankful for but that's about it. One of my church friends that I had not seen in awhile was there and I didn't realize that she was still going through chemo for breast cancer. The last i heard she was clear but last night she looked sick, wearing a cap on her head and it was like a punch in the stomach. I don't know how she got to that point without me knowing it, and I am telling you that if I had to choose one person in that church that is the sweetest, kindest, most gentle person it would be her. Bruce and I just sat there at our table fighting back tears when we saw her. Bless her heart. Please say a prayer for Cindy today. She is only in her 40's.

November 23, 2009 - Msg 76245: Morning porch friends, just checking in for a minute. Just got back to work from the dentist, finally having that root canal. It was not as bad as I thought and once the numbness wears off I will be okay. Just a few folks scheduled this afternoon and then I will probably go home.

Prayers for your friend Cindy, Boo.

Lunch menu will be: potato soup, grilled cheese and chips. dessert will be chocolate pudding with whipped cream. tea and kool to drink. see you all at noon.

have a blessed day.

November 23, 2009 - Msg 76246: Good morning, porch! Hey, I saw that snow too, on the home page. What a neat idea - thanks, Floyd!

Boo, I'm sorry for your friend, and will pray that all goes well. The chemo can be miserable, but I'm here to tell you, thirty years after the fact, that it can be worth it. My own cancer was a bad one, ten nodes positive out of fifteen, but through the hands of a skilled surgeon, the expertise of my oncologist, and most of all, a LOT of prayer, here I am. I'll never have a bikini figure, but who cares - I have my life.

Maudie, you take yourself home and rest this afternoon. I'm glad the root canal wasn't as bad as you expected, but they're still no picnic. Go home and take a long nap!

Thanksgiving plans? OK, here goes - tomorrow I'll shop for the meal I'll be cooking, but it won't be on Thursday. On the big day, I'll be going to Terri's for dinner. She's Eloise's other daughter, sister to my son's wife. She sets a wonderful table, done up all pretty and formal, and the meal will be delicious. I'll have to leave by 5:30, because I work that night. I'll put in my twelve hours, come home on Friday and sleep a while, then start preparations for the meal I'll cook on Saturday. It's just not Thanksgiving for me if I don't cook a turkey, so I'll do it all the way - the traditional TG meal. Terri and her family will be invited, of course Eloise and Jerry, along with David and Brittney and the boys. We may pick up a stray or two along the way, we usually do. It's possible that Heather and company will come from Fredbg, but I know Robbi and her family won't make it, because she was just here. Still, we'll have turkey and ham, and stuffing and all the other sides. I'll stash some leftovers and will eat like royalty next week, with just the punch of a microwave button! Yum!

Now, what are the rest of you doing? --Romeena

November 24, 2009 - Msg 76264: Hello everyone.

REV, our old rotary dial telephone was originally dark blue with a short cord when first installed. Decades ago, when we had it changed to a longer cord, we selected a light blue color. Back then, everything was hardwired. So when you wanted a different component, you had to change the entire telephone.

Boo, sorry to hear about Cindy.
possum again, also sorry to hear about Lisa. I will offer prayers for both.

MDC and ky girl, when I visit here, I often think about Millie, may she rest in peace. I also remember when her family did post here. I searched the internet and found the web site for her restaurant. However, I don't know if it is still owned and run by her family.
Later today, I will search the archives, then send them an email through their website.

My wife has joined me here in the USA. For Thanksgiving dinner, we are invited to my sister's house. In the meantime, my Canadian wife is enjoying shopping in American stores and restaurants. And on Black Friday, we are planning on beginning our shopping spree at Old Navy when they open at 3am! Oh woe is me!

I hope my wife doesn't get wind of this. ;)

Just got back from a little Thanksgiving lunch and fall program at Kai's school. The fall program was pushed back a week due to the tragedy that happened, so they had it today.
Lunch and a show, can't beat that! :)
Kai was her usual nervous beforehand but composed and animated during her piece. And the daughter of the youth pastor killed was amazingly cheerful as she said her piece and sang with the other kids. I am still in wonderment over the resilience of that family in the midst of what happened not that long ago. The great comforter I think of often in this case.
He definitely has his arms around them.

As for Thanksgiving plans, we are usually pretty loose about that day, since my mom can't ever seem to get all of us around on the same day, we usually show up at certain points during the day, or even the week. I know one of my brothers is coming in on Friday, so hopefully we will leave some food for him(the greens anyway, since he is a vegetarian. Oh well, more turkey for us. ).

Shopping at 3 AM?

November 24, 2009 - Msg 76268: Good evening, porch. A tough twelve hours last night - seemed like it would never end. One anxious mother of a 16-yr old new mom about wore me out. No doubt feeling helpless and frustrated at the way her daughter has messed up what should still be her childhood, she's coping in the only way she knows how - by trying to manage everything and everybody that comes in contact with her daughter. She was polite and civil, but relentless. She wouldn't use the call bell, but every time my backside hit a chair, she would appear, needing or wanting something, asking a kindergarten question, whatever. Once she came to the desk to report a "deafening" noise in the room, and she thought it might be the baby's abduction alarm malfunctioning (baby was obviously right there.) I investigated. The noise turned out to be a car alarm somewhere far out on the north parking lot, and I could barely hear it. When I identified the sound for her, she asked if there was anything I could do to stop it, since she was afraid it was going to awaken her daughter, who was sleeping as only a 16-yr old kid can sleep. They were going home today. Heaven help that poor little girl, with Helicopter Mom in charge.

David is over at Eloise's, putting up her Christmas lights, and will come here tomorrow to get mine up. It will take most of the day, because of all the stuff I do out back. Actually, I do most of that, but David has to get my deer down off the garage wall and help me lug them to the back yard. Bless his sweet heart, he's the most patient and accommodating man. He has a lot more patience with that sort of thing than his daddy had. Dale would do it if I asked, but only what I asked. David is innovative, has lots of ideas, and will just get in his car and disappear now and then, returning with some new attachment for the lights, or more strings in order to extend the range of the lights, more timers, whatever. When he's done, you expect a 747 to land on the driveway, and it all comes on and goes off with no prompting from me.

Another beautiful reblooming iris just opened. It's one of my favorites - Halloween Halo. Solid white, with a deep orange beard, and the sweetest fragrance. Pretty thing.

Ha! I just watered Shamu. Stinkin' cat was creeping across the yard, heading for a boulder, and I could see one of my yard lizards on that boulder, no doubt enjoying the warmth left over from a day in the sun. So, I waited until the cat was positioned just right, and turned on that sprinkler zone. Hahaha! Straight up, spun in the air, hit the ground running and shinnied up the fence through the ileagnus that clings to the fence. Probably got a few scratches, and I know he got wet. Dumb cat, you'd think he'd figure it out eventually and stay home. I watered him Sunday night as he was perched on the pond bridge, trying to get a paw through the leaf net, after my fish! 'Scuse me, cat, I didn't raise those fish for you to eat!! So, home he went, wet again. Once again - dumb cat!

Joe loves to hear about my cat-watering episodes, and had me laughing the other day, when he said pretty soon Angie would be putting a little raincoat and bonnet on Shamu before letting him out. What a picture! Dumb cat, what a dumb cat!

Well, guess I'll go finish putting groceries away. I went to the store after work this morning, had them sack all the cold stuff together and just stuck it straight in the fridge when I got home, and went to bed! So now the rest of it is waiting for me. Argh.

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

We just started letting him venture outside now and then and on one of his first trips outside, Sean was cleaning out the car and saw Tigger coming towards him with a little mouse in his mouth. The mouse was still alive and the cat was very proud of himself. Sean came unglued, starting screaming at the cat to let go of the mouse and then proceeded to kick the cat in the head until he turned loose of the little mouse. Sean then carried it across the street and left it in the field, far from the cat. I didn't witness it but heard Sean's account of the ordeal. I explained that the cat was bringing him a little gift and kicking him in the head was not the best way to handle the situation! haha...don't know who I felt sorrier for, the cat or the mouse.:-)

November 25, 2009 - Msg 76278: Good morning everyone. I just wanted to stop by and wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving Day. Despite all of our difficulties, we still have so much to be thankful for. I know I complain much too much.

Prayers for all who need them today. I also ask for your prayers for my Mrs. She fell down the other day and sprained her ankle quite badly. She is on crutches for teh time being and can't work. Normally, that fact would be the least of our worries but since she used up all her leave with the baby, now she's not getting paid. We are still trying to financially recover from her being off for so long and now this will surely put a crimp on the holidays. The most important thing is her health and comfort, of course, but if you could squeeze a few words in there about our financial situation, it would be appreciated.

Baby Lila is doing fine. She's still only a little over nine pounds at four months old, but seems healthy enough. She's taking to the cereal well, though. Hopefully, she will be a little "huskier" soon.

Well, don't go eating a dry bird without cranberry sauce!

I just had a call from my sister-in-law. My 20-yr old nephew had a recurrence of a cyst on his forearm - it was originally excised when he was four. Now it appears to be back, but that's not the main concern. The doctor also found a lump in his neck, and says it is a lymph node that is frequently a sentinel node for cancer in the stomach. Naturally, he'll be seeing an oncologist for investigation. Naturally, my SIL is a wreck, my brother is pretty much in a heap as well, and my nephew is numb. Please pray that this will turn out to be nothing of importance, and for strength for my nephew and his parents as the investigation moves along.

It's absolutely beautiful here today. It's 58 degrees, clear blue sky, golden sunlight and a light breeze. A perfect day for putting out Christmas lights, and my son is on his way over. We'll get it done today, and that's saying a lot.

There are seven squirrels out back, playing tag in the big tree by the back fence. The leaves are gone, so I can see the whole game. What fun!

Sterling, I wouldn't hurt that miserable cat for anything, but I sure don't mind watering him whenever I can. I like cats - don't want one, but I like 'em okay. It's just their predatory habits that bother me. I know they're just doing what comes naturally, but I don't like to witness it. He's so well-fed and fat that he absolutely does not need to hunt, so that makes it even worse. Miserable wretch!

Our local grocery stores do the "buy a bag" thing too. Sometimes I buy one, but not often. Our church collects food and distributes it, my hospital does the same, my SS class usually adopts a family or two, and I drop off food at the local food pantry here in town throughout the year. Lots of opportunities to help, and that's good. How can I sit here, forty pounds overweight, and not share food with the needy?

Well, guess I'd better get dressed. Dave will be here shortly. The least I can do is clear a path in the garage to the things he'll need to work with. I can at least move my car!!

Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

Prayers for Mrs. Me-They and your nephew,Ro.

Maude, glad you have recovered from the root canal.

Well,I am trying to do my Thanksgiving cooking but have my hands full with Laci! Her mom is pretty sick,so thought I'd better keep Laci for a few days. Thought it was strep throat, but it's some nasty virus. Anyhow, I'm trying to get things done & tend to Miss Thing at the same time and am about to collapse! Ha! Hoping she'll take a nap. She's back there throwing toys,so I sang "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" to her, hoping that'll do the trick!
Well,I'm off to attempt to make cornbread dressing- y'all take care!

Thanks Rev, you are a light.

Me-They Prayers buddy. I miss seeing ya drop by.

Did anyone catch the e-mail scandal concerning "global warming" (or the lack there of). Turns out that academics can be as greedy and deceiving as capitalist pigs. How shocking!

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 26, 2009 - Msg 76288: Good to see you, Me-They. Sorry about your dear wife, though. Prayers for a speedy recovery for her and that the Lord would provide for all of your family's needs.:-)

Thank you for sharing the situation with your nephew, Ro. I will certainly pray for him and for his parents. I know that there are some cysts that come back after they are removed, but 16 years is a long time, isn't it? Sometimes being a parent is so incredibly scary (and painful).

We have been having a tough time with Sean lately...had to cancel our last trip to Houston and he is not doing well on the Paxil. He feels so sick from it sometimes and dizzy, too. Also, on the Paxil, he continues to gain weight because he never feels full and has cravings. He is over 200 lbs now and only about 5-2. It just breaks my heart to see him this way because he is an unhappy kid. We try, his counselor tries, but food seems to be meeting a need for him and he is nowhere ready to change yet. I hope it doesn't take something like diabetes to change things. We still have some control over his eating now but not for very long. I think about it at night and know that Sean has so many hurdles already. I am trying but don't always know what to do to help him. I take him to the best medical doctors, the best psycologist in town, homeschool him, take him to church and spend alot of time with him. I know God has a plan for him but sometimes I get very discouraged when things just seem to go from bad to worse. I think I have been too busy and not seeking the Lord about what to do for him, and that is a must. I am thankful that I have him and he is not dealing with some terrible physical illnes, but what we deal with on a daily basis is very draining and stressful ( of course this is true of every parent who has an adolescent child ;-). Sorry, just needed to talk about it for a minute. I really don't talk to anyone else about it except Bruce now and then because we both are having such a struggle.

Well, went to Susan's to help with some of the thanksgiving prep and enjoyed the evening with her and my parents. Her house was very cozy and she had a fire in the fireplace when we got there. We cooked and watched a Holiday movie on ABC Family called, "The Christmas List". It was cute. Susan made 6 pies (two of each: pumpkin, pecan, and my favorite banana blueberry cream cheese pies)!

Think I will go to bed. The kids want to watch Macy's parade in the morning. Goodnight..

Boo

November 26, 2009 - Msg 76289: Good very late evening, friends (or early morning, take your choice.) Dave and Brittney and the boys just left. All my roof lights and icicles are up, the snowman is on the porch, the big deer is standing in the courtyard. Everything is on timers, and David also ran power sources out to all my favorite decorating spots. We use those combination timers/power post things, and sometimes we plug a plain power post into one of the combos to extend the reach a little. With the power in place, I can take my time putting out twinkle lights and setting up my deer. I got the new flowerbed decorated out back, and all the deer are in the back yard waiting for me. With all else that's going on, it may be Sunday before I get all that done, but that's okay. The part I can't do myself was done by my loving son, bless him, and it looks so pretty!

Boo, I'm so sorry that you and Bruce, and especially Sean are having to deal with all those problems. He's such a sweet kid, it's too bad that he has such challenges. I pray that he'll grow out of it - kids often do.

Well, I'm off to bed too. Tomorrow I'm going to sleep until I wake up, then put some sort of veggie dish together and head over to Brittney's sister's house for Thanksgiving dinner, then will leave early and go to work tomorrow night. That's why I'm sleeping late in the morning!

Have a wonderful day tomorrow, my porch friends. When I list the things for which I'm thankful, believe me - you're at the top of the list. Be blessed! --Romeena

November 26, 2009 - Msg 76302: Happy Thanksgiving, my dear porch family! I love this place and all my friends who rock here. As Ro said, when I count my blessings you all are at the top of my list.

It is now nearly 9pm, so the dinner is over, the food put away and our bellies are full. God has been so very good to us and has prospered America even when we didn't deserve it. His grace just keeps on blessing His own. My heart is full with thanksgiving for what Jesus did for us and because of it, we can all be together for eternity!:-)...whether you like it or not! ;-)

You are so right when you said we can be thankful for the burdens we don't have, Ro. I have had your nephew and his parents on my mind since last night and am still praying. It has got to be so hard to wait on something like that. I pray they find the peace that passes understanding and that all is ok. I had the blessing of spending the evening with my family and sharing some time with my nephew, Matt and his family. Matt is St Susan's only child and he is now 30. I can't believe he could be 30 but time flies. I love him every bit as much as when he was a little boy and he is like my own. I am so thankful that he is well and that my children are healthy. There we sat in the living room and I stared in amazement at my two 83 yr old parents, still with us, still together after all these years. I am so blessed.

Something very special happened that will make it a memorable thanksgiving for me. I think I mentioned that my childhood friend, Donia had gotten in touch with me recently and we had not seen each other in over 30 years. I had been longing to get back in touch with her because we were very close as children. Well, she was in town for thanksgiving and she came and spent a few hours with us today. I just want to cry thinking about it. It is such a treasure to find someone you love again after so many years. She is still the same sweet girl I remembered and its funny how nothing changed; I still feel like our souls are very close. It's like finding a long, lost sister. I am still rejoicing over it! God is so good.

Well, I think I will stretch out on the couch for a bit before the kids get home. They went to a movie with Emily's mom and siblings.

Thank you all for being such wonderful friends!

Love,
Boo

Just wanted to stop by before Thanksgiving is over and tell you how much I am thankful for everyone here. If we have prayer requests they're taken to the Lord, if we have problems they are aired,(and some solved!), if we have laughs, they ripple across the porch. You truly are family!! And for that I AM so thankful! Have a blessed night...~New Neighbor

"Christmas cross," now there's two words not often used together, but my, how good it is that they are indeed used together, for the birth led to the death, which then, of course, led to the glorious RESURRECTION! Good job Spotty!
I will be getting my scene up this weekend.
Here's a crazy thought, when we go to Cracker Barrel, I always sit in one of the porch rockers there and pretend that I'm there with YOU ALL! Spot and Rev playin checkers, for example,Ro and Boo quilting, me and some others whittling or "jawin'" etc. Good thoughts of ya all!

A little snow in the forecast today.

I'm hitting the "BLACK FRIDAY" deals...online, in my pj's (well, sweat pants), with some hot-an-strong black as night coffee, and some homemade oatmeal butterscotch cookies Mrs auh2o made.

Spot-That's nice of ya to fill in for a friend. I've said it before but you really are a good dog.

November 27, 2009 - Msg 76308: That's not a crazy thought, MDC. It's sweet to know you are thinking of us. I think of all of you often, too throughout my day. Seems like something is always reminding me of one of you. I thought of you yesterday, MDC. I have some church friends who are in Arizona for thanksgiving and one of them (Alan, who is my age) started having chest pain and was admitted to the hospitol somewhere. He is a cardiac patient and has already had one heart attack but turns out it wasn't his heart this time, but a mild case of pneumonia. He's fine and visiting the Grand Canyon today.:-)

Ahu2o, that sounds like fun. I should have done that (shopping on line). My niece, Amy, stood in a line early this morning at Walmart to buy "Guitar Hero" for fifty dollars. They are on a tight budget this year so it helped. My kids are getting one thing each this year for Christmas. I told them to pick out one thing that they want because that's all they should expect (they are getting a new house, aren't they?);-) I think Erin wants a new bike and Sean wants and IPOD nano (not exactly sure what the nano part means). I don't have time for alot of shopping this year and won't even put up a tree until late, which is hard. I usually put up the tree right after thanksgiving.

Ro, if you have time, post some pics of your lighted house and yard. I decided that after our house is done, then I will send pics of everything so you can look at it in sequence and then see the final product. I will even try to do a little Christmas decorating for the pics.

You should have waited in line at Home Depot for hours in the cold to get a shop vac, SPOT...hehe..kidding. "Turley" for breakfast? I had a piece of leftover banana-blueberry pie...it's tradition on the morning after thanksgiving. :-)

The chores await!
