October 10, 2009 - Msg 75556: Hey, Floyd. To my knowledge, I'm the only porchster going on the cruise. My friend Eloise will be with me, as she was last year, but no other porchsters are going, I'm sorry to say. Spot, take note.

Well, my suitcase is packed, the kitchen is clean, there's a fresh jug of tea in the fridge (my friend Deanna, who is staying with Starr, likes tea as much as I do) and the master bathroom is clean, with fresh towels out. Just need to dust in the bedroom, will change the linens in the morning, and that will about do it.

I think Starr is beginning to smell a rat, she is sticking even closer to me than usual, poor little thing. She just hates for me to leave her. This will be for six and a half days, too. She's really going to be upset, I'm afraid, but Deanna will be good to her, doesn't mind if she sleeps on the bed and will give her lots of cuddles. She'll be okay.

Be blessed, friends. See you next Saturday. --Romeena

I'm about ready to leave, still 45 minutes before Eloise and Jerry come by. My warpaint is on, hair is clean (still wet, but it'll dry) and just need to put my clothes on. Suitcase is packed, small carry-on is packed, all is ready. Starr has plastered her small self to my ankle, so I know she knows what's up. Poor little girl, she's such a loving puppy. I left the old long t-shirt I slept in last night in her little cuddle bed - maybe she'll get some comfort from that. She has already found it and rolled on it!

I'll be thinking of you all - my second family - and praying for the needs of which I'm aware. Be blessed, dear porch. --Romeena

I was hoping to stop back by to say see ya to Romeena an Floyd. I bet ya they have a good time.

MDC & Asa-I really don't put much stock into the Noble Prize, never really have. Just look at past Presidential winners to see where they stand, individual liberty is nowhere to be found. It's kinda like caring what the U.N. has to say. Who does?

Hope Ro has a fantastic time without us..sure she will!:-)

SNOW, Auh2o??...boo hoo...I would love some snow! It is warming up again after a little cool front this weekend...highs in the 70's friday, sat and sunday and cloudy. We had cook out on the place yesterday and the weather was just perfect for porch sittin' and story telling. We had a few friends out, including Michelle, the girl I have been telling you about and you have prayed for. She is doing great and moved into a nicer, more strict group home for women in recovery. She loves it and has her own little apartment that she shares with 2 other women. i was really proud of her yesterday because when i picked her up for churchs he was really tired because she had been up late. It turns out that one of the women in the apartment was sneaking around and getting high, so Michelle called the woman in charge of the home and reported it. She said that the woman came home high and smelling of marajuana and since that was Michelle's drug of choice, she knew that she didn't need that kind of thing around her if she is going to stay sober. The woman in charge came right over that night, questioned everyone in the apartment, made the woman who was high submit to a drug test and made her pack her things and get out immediately. She doesn't put up with anything and that is exactly what Michelle needs. She just completed her 90 days of sobriety. She talked to me more about her past yesterday and it just broke my heart. Folks, this is a girl that can make it with a little help and is so strong. Please continue your prayers for Michelle, as she is trying to get her GED right now and is not having much luck finding a job. She is attending all her required meetings but still no job. I have been buying her food and household things she needs but she really wants to work. She is talking about selling her plasma for money..said she has done it in the past.

Better get Erin to school...

The house is coming along. Bought a new stove/oven for the house today and I think I decided on the countertops. I chose the quartz countertops (called HanStone)...same thing as Silestone or Zodiac, if you are familiar with those. Looks kind of like granite but even more durable and won't stain. Also, I could cover the 9 ft kitchen island with it in one big peice. If I went with the granite, they couldn't do it in one long peice. If you go to Hanstone website you can probably see it...It's called "Swan Cotton". I decided to put Corian in the laundry room because it is half the price and very durable, too. So, got a couple of things accomplished today. They will start putting the primer coat on the interior walls this week and finish the caulking and trim on the exterior so it can be painted. I have to choose my tile for the bathrooms this week, too..yuck. I had making decisions, especially on a budget. I have to keep the tile cost to 2 dollars a sq ft. They started putting on the barn roof today. It looks like a real barn on the inside...rafters and all. All the cabinets are still being built and I haven't seen any of them yet.

Gotta get going to the rehab...pray for us if you can.

October 13, 2009 - Msg 75583: Thanks REV, it was a good night. We have a couple girls we meet with on one hall who know nothing about the bible, been unchurched all their lives and they are just wonderful to spend time with...so many questions! When we met on the other hall, we had a a larger group and one of the girls who is 16 found out yesterday that she is pregnant. She was terrified and kept asking if God would take her baby because of her sin. I talked with her for quite awhile know she has an anxiety disorder of some kind and is bipolar. They took her off her med because she is pregnant, which will make things worse for her. Bless her heart, i felt so sorry for her. Imagine being 16, pregnant and far from any family or friends, locked up. There is lots of drama in that place, too, which doesn't help.

Possum, your mama is probably thinking that if you put her in a nursing home to recover, you will leave her there. ;-) It gets discouraging because when parents get to be that age you really don't see things getting much better, more things just keep going wrong with their health and we aren't spring chickens, either. I had no clue how things would turn out for me by waiting so long to have children. My parents had me kind of late and then i had my kids later than most, which set me up to be in the middle of young children and very elderly parents. It is hard to spread myself so thin sometimes. Thank God for my sister and her husband. They are great about taking care of the folks because they don't have any kids still at home. Their only son is 30. She does babysit alot, though (Emily). I had emily yesterday and she was so much fun. She wanted to go to "Wa-Mot" (Walmart), she I took her while I got a few things. That little girl is like a Diva-Shopper...she was bossy...pointing at where she wanted to go. She wanted to spend alot of time on the Barbie isle and carries multiple naked barbies everwhere she goes. She's a cute little dickens.

Better get Erin to school...I am tackling a load of laundry today (what's new) so I will be dropping in on my breaks.

I accidently parked beside the fish pond and when I opened my car door to get out, stepped right in the middle of it! Darn ole fish nibbling on my toes. Start the music. Let this party begin... Welcome First timer- - - Where's our manners? You can dance with Mr. Schwump. ~New Neighbor

October 15, 2009 - Msg 75629: Oh yes, Auh2o, I have made snow angels...remember I'm the one who vacations in Colorado in December. It actually snowed her on Christmas eve 4 years ago and left 5-7 inches on the ground for Christmas Day. There was a snowman in every lawn in south texas, let me tell ya. My neighbors were getting out the surfboards to sled down the hill because nobody south of Amarillo has a sled.;-)

Me in spandex?! What a sight that would be.

Wasn't that something about that kid, MDC? Can you believe the whole world got all stirred up over a kid hiding in the garage! haha Glad he's ok.:-)

So sorry Possum, prayers for you.

Better go get my shower. It's been a long day of shopping for tile for the house and such.

October 16, 2009 - Msg 75635: Morning, or should I say "mornin after". Boy what a headache. I don't know what was in that punch, but boy did it ever have a punch! "What a mess I've made of my life"!
Boo, you have got to be sore after all that discoing. Mercy sakes, you got some moves.
And you N.N. A little lampshade goes a long ways. But wearing it as a dress? You looked like that lamp in A Christmas Story.
Anyway. hope the house got put back together good. Don't want our mother figure Ro mad at us. I think Starr enjoyed our company, but was happy to see us go. I think we were a bit noisier than she's used to.

Prayers for you Possum. Although our "party" was a diversion (or at least an attempt at one) I'm sorry your Husband is still creating problems for you.

Glad the child was not in the balloon, but now there are questions about if this whole thing was staged? Man, I hope not.

Well better go soak my head in something. It feels big and numb this morning.

October 16, 2009 - Msg 75645: I hesitate to tell you this Possum, but I know you will want to pray. Jubi had a CT scan this week that showed what the doc called "nodules" in her lungs; said it could be a mild case of pneumonia or her cancer might be back. I think there is a good chance that it's not the cancer but please everyone remember Jubi and her family.

Sorry you are still trying to get that roof on, SPOT.

October 17, 2009 - Msg 75646: Oh,Boo. That poor child. Thank you for telling me.Please always do. One way I stay strong throughout my troubles is to focus on folks worse off than me. Oh,I will pray for that child. Pray without ceasing.
May the angels watch over Jubi and God give her strength to deal with this latest battle and may HE heal her little body.Bless Jubi ,her family and the doctors tending her. In Jesus' name- Amen.

October 17, 2009 - Msg 75650: ONE DAY, ONE THING AT A TIME

We can't make life go faster
Than just one day at a time,
So why hasten tomorrow,
And leave today's joy behind?
We can't relive yesterday,
So why long for days gone past?
What's taken for granted now
Becomes nostalgic too fast.
One day, one thing at a time,
With the Lord's help, we should live;
Life's sweet hopes and memories
To us He will surely give.

October 17, 2009 - Msg 75651: Friends, sorry to bring problems here again, but it's my Mama. Thought she was doing better, but she is so weak that she can barely walk, get up from a sitting position and can barely stay awake. She has played games like "fake falling" but that's not what's happening now. I know being in the hospital takes a toll on you, youcan't rest in there, etc. But she sleeps well at night, has been out of hospital since last Tuesday. It is not meds-I monitor/hide them, she does not touch them,so no narcotic overload, anything like that. She is not "sick",so do not feel an urgent need to rush her to a doctor. We're checking blood sugar, doing what we've been told to do. She is to see her family doc next week. That's for a follow up after the hospital stay.
My surgery sis finally got the all clear yesterday to walk again, but still has stitches in her foot. Due to pulling on Mama, trying to help her yeaterday afternoon, she ripped a few stitches! So, she cannot do it alone,I will stay over there with her tonight & probably tomorrow too. The lady caregiver we get a few nights is a blessing, but she can't lift her. I found that out the other night when I stayed to escape the drunk hubby's mouth at my house. She got me to get Mama off of the floor.
My sister is power of attorney, and like the doctor suggested a few days ago- she should go into a nursing home/care facility during the 6-8 more weeks it will take for her foot to heal. We tried that same day,she balked.Oh,man! My sister who babies her, reached her limit a few hours ago.. Can't do a thing on a weekend, but Monday is coming. Mama is our heart, but she is so DANG selfish & stubborn.
We just can't care for her.Bottom line. Not how she wants to be cared for anyhow. She needs pros.
So... I am doing my part staying over there along with my sister tonight & tomorrow. Hope I can "laptop" to the Porch. May not have time to breathe!
I think Mama is on her way out. Ro,Boo,NN, ANYONE who has had experience with this- is constant weakness & nodding off ALL the time the beginning of the end? I think she is willing herself out of this world.Sad over Wyoming sis moving & taking the kids.Mama has made comments like "She'll come back.. for my funeral."
I'll check in when I can. Prayers for Jubi ,love to all.

October 17, 2009 - Msg 75652: Great day in the morning!! I leave for six days and you people run wild. There are meatballs in Toye Starr's bed, big footprints in the pond, strange pink wet spots on the ceiling, my car is out of gas, and I found Asa's toolbelt draped over the ceiling fan in the living room! Also, my neighbor told me her cat came home soaking wet three times, and gagging on a meatball! What on earth has been going on here?

The cruise was wonderful! Allan is such a nice guy, his wife is a sweetheart, and when he changes into Floyd, he is absolutely awesome. The variety show last night lasted more than two hours, and we were all sorry to see it end. Such goin's on, such goin's on!

There is another cruise planned for next year. I would strongly urge anyone who thinks they might be able to go to start planning for it now. You would need to make a $75 deposit, and then the travel agent (her name is Sharon, and she's great!) has a schedule for payments that make it practically painless. Tickets are $500+ - under $600 anyway - and by the time you're ready to go, it's been long ago paid for. Once on the ship, everything is free. Well, if you have any alcohol you would have to pay for that, and any souvenirs and such, but food and entertainment cost you nothing. If you make any excursions on the shore days, that's up to you, but even that is very reasonable. It's a lot of fun, you'll meet a lot of Mayberry folks, and it would just be great if we could have a bunch of porch folks along next year.

Possum, you are in such a difficult position right now. What you're describing could very well be just your mom's body winding down, like a tired clock. Or, it could be a medication reaction - be sure to have a plain talk with her doc. It could be depression, too. There are a lot of possibilities. The weakness could be just de-conditioning, due to inactivity. That's one more reason to get her into a facility where they have professionals to get her on her feet and moving! You and your surgery sis just can't do it. She needs physical therapists who can evaluate her needs, design a program to meet those needs, and get her mobile. If your sister has power of attorney, that will enable you to do what needs to be done, but only if your mom's doctor is willing to certify that she's not capable of making rational decisions herself. As long as she is considered competent, that overrides the power of attorney.

Well, guess I'd better go feed myself and Toye Starr. She has not been more than two feet away from me since I got home. Sweet little old thing. Be blessed, friends. It's good to be home. --Romeena

October 17, 2009 - Msg 75653: Me again. The latest is my sister got a phone call from Mama's best friend.Mama called her at some point, told her we made her realize she needs to go into a nursing home/rehab until her foot heals. Thank goodness she is finally agreeing,as it has just about killed us trying to make her see this.
Sorry I haven't been very Mayberryish lately, but like Otis said,"I ain't in & I ain't out.I'm in the Twilight Zone!" I woke up Wed. morn, thought it was Sat. I was on phone with Wyoming sis,the other day&my husband pops his head in,says to tell her he said hello,I am looking right at him & I tell her,"Andy says hey"-Andy is my nephew-her son!Stress will make you crazy, friends. Try to avoid it as much as you can.God Bless-I know y'all care and love me. DITTO.

October 17, 2009 - Msg 75658: Well, Possum, I am so sorry for what you are going through but maybe this will make you feel better: I am dealing with not one but three stubborn, irrational, forgetful, often irate elderly people. HAHA...now my mother-in-law is losing it even more. She is paranoid and thinks we are out to get her or something! There is just no winning. Seriously, though, I hope your mom will follow through and go where she can get what she needs, as Ro mentioned. I personally don't think that what you have described sounds like your mother is nearing death. One thing I have noticed with my parents is that a trip to the hospital or any kind of trip, makes them very tired and week for awhile. It takes them time to recover. My mom had her pacemaker ordeal over a week ago and she is just getting some of her strength back from that. They just don't bounce back from things quickly at that age. Hopefully with some help, she will regain some strength soon.

Been a busy day. We finally decided on the tile for the floor and showers...it took awhile but we did it and stayed within budget, but here is something funny; Until today, we didn't notice that there is a wall missing in the hall bathroom! It is missing from the plans. There is a walk-in shower in there and there is supposed to be about a three foot wall between the shower and the toilet. Neither of us ever noticed even though the dry wall is up and they have even started the painting! So, the builder suggested that we put up a wall of those glass blocks, that it would be the most cost effective and would open up the room and give more light in the shower. Well, not sure how I feel about that but we'll see. I'm really not the glass block kind of person. The tile we decided on is pretty neutral and looks like stone. It is actually procelain. We will have smooth stones on the shower floor and as accents. Pretty cool, I think. Smooth natural stones are neat on the floor of the shower because they absorb the heat from the father and retain it. It is almost like getting a foot message when you run your feet over the arm stones. Now, that is probably alot more than you really care about..sorry.

Guess I should go to bed. Hope you all have a wonderful sunday tomorrow and WELCOME HOME ROMEENA! We missed you, as always.

Boo
