Asa- I am also a compassionate conservative, and
indeed am praying for the Kennedys.
Regarding public speaking, I too was like that until someone told me to focus on the verse
2 Timothy 1:7 "For he does NOT give us a spirit of fear..." Now i just stand on that verse and all nervousness leaves me. The evil one wants you nervous, God wants you cool and collected, so just bind the devil and God's coolness will take over. Also, I always go up front beforehand to "establish my ground" so to speak. (no pun intended.) I stand at the pulpit or lecturn as people are coming in, and it is amazing how the fear disipates. Also, it makes you familiar with the scope of the room, etc.
Someone also told me one time that if you look at foreheads and not eyes, it will still seem to the audience that you are looking them in the eyes.
Also, you can pretend that everyone is naked! I know that seems funny, but it helps calm YOUR nerves because you are thinking of that funny thing. Hope some of that helps.

Just checking in. There's no update, sorry to say. We're calling every day, but there's nothing to indicate anything has been done to or about our gun-happy neighbor. Maybe there's something going on behind the scenes, but if so, no one's indicated it. Not that they would, I suppose. Meanwhile, I was watering some plants yesterday and found another bullet hole in the fence that was overlooked Friday night. The good news is, we moved my daughter out of that bedroom and back into her original room. That back room is the only one with a window that faces the house behind us, so it will just sit empty. sheesh... Where's Andy when you need him?
Boo, you know Sean's situation better than anyone, but has he been tested for dyscalculia? One of my daughters has it, and it makes math functions virtually impossible. Here are a couple links that might help:

Hey, Boo. Sounds like De§ could be onto something. I know absolutely nothing about it, but it sounds like dyscalculia is like dyslexia, only with numbers instead of words. Very interesting.
Boo, this will explain the sign you saw. At Reunion Arena in Dallas, 1984, Ronald Reagan stated: “America needs God more than God needs America. If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a Nation gone under.”
How right he was. I wish someone had cloned him about forty years ago.

I'll check out those sites, DES, thanks. Sean has been tested and they told me he is dyslexic but nothing was mentioned about dyscalculia...that's a new one to me. Today was a difficult day for him and he ended up losing his temper, then I lost mine and I really thought that my head was going to blow up! So frustrating! I have a call in to one of his docs because I really believe he needs a medication change or adjustment.
Took mom to get the heart monitor and then dad wanted me to take him to the athletic store to find some sort of athletic supporter that would prevent his, "testicles from falling in the water" when he sits on the toilet. I am not kidding...they didn't have what he wanted so i took him to the medical supply store. The woman in there had to listen to his story (poor thing) but didn't have what he was looking for, either. Problem is that he won't give any of us any peace about it until we find something. I suggested one of those big toilet seats that make you sit higher up but he said, "I will have a hard time carrying that around with me when I go somewhere"...I said he could wear it around his neck (sorry, but by then I was frustrated and it was 100 degrees...). Anyway, finally got them fed and settled at home. I think I need a real vacation...not just an overnight trip away from home.

Thanks for the tips MDC. I have heard the idea of visualising folks naked, but this being at Church and all, just doesn't seem right. But looking them straight in the forehead. That's an outstanding idea. I might try that one. Just hope no one is picking their nose or I might pull an Edith Bunker and say "I welcome you with open noses..... I mean arms. HA! Anyone remember that episode when she's hosting a Tupperware party.
Prayers for your Mom Boo. I hope her tests all come back good. And for your Dad too. I've got one of my old neck harnesses you can try to modify if you want. But you can keep it if it don't work. I won't need it back. :) Oh and prayers for Sean, that you can get his meds adjusted right.
Well I'm sad. I picked some more corn tonight and noticed the pickins are getting a bit slim. Probably only a couple of weeks left. So sad.
My wife had a good day today (as far as feeling good) so my Daughter took her out and they did some Christmas shopping. Got some killer deals. I know it's way early but she needs to shop when she can.
We have had two older Gentlemen in our Church pass away this week from long term health problems. Didn't know the one very well, but the other was just a couple of doors down from us. We stopped in and gave his wife some flowers and a card. I feel so bad for her. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary earlier this year. She looks so lost and lonely, bless her heart. She reminds me a little of Emma Watson. She has a lot of family close by, but I will be looking to see what I can do to help her. The funeral is Saturday. It will be hard for her I'm sure. If you could remember Jean in your prayers, I'd be grateful.
Better go see if I can see mars tonight. Thanks for reminding me MDC.

Good evening, porch. Asa, you won't see Mars tonight. That email that's been going around about it dates back to 2003. Check it out: http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/m/mars.htm. I don't know who reinvents these things, but I wish they'd find something else to do.
I'm glad your wife had a better day today, and pray that she'll have many more. Prayers too for your friend Jean. I know that "lost and lonely" feeling. She needs lots of prayers and loving support from friends and family.
I'd like to ask for prayer for my friend Fay and her husband, Tom. They were my parents' dearest friends for many years - the kind of friends that merited the "Aunt and Uncle" address by the children in the family. Fay has just been diagnosed with colon cancer, and treatment will begin immediately. They're strong and prayerful Christians, and I know they're under God's watchful eye, but any remembrance you can spare for them will be appreciated.
Possum, I'm glad you got a chuckle out of the ants in the birdseed, but I confess I didn't find it too funny at the time. I do now, of course.
Well, guess I'll surf for a while. My beloved little cell phone died - the battery is charged but only the number buttons work. None of the function buttons do - function, that is. It's five years old, so I guess I got my money's worth, but I like the phone and hate to give it up. I'm not too impressed with the little slivers of metal that pass for phones these days. I know they'll just dive like a minnow into the depths of my purse, never to be seen again. My old phone is short, fat, chunky and wears a leather and fabric jacket. Wherever I put it in my purse, there it stays. It also has a belt clip, and I can hook it on my waistband under my shirt if I wish, or clip it into the pocket of my jeans, and it's always accessible. It makes and receives calls, it stores voicemail, and that's about it. It's internet-capable, but I never activated that part. It doesn't take pictures. Darn it, just when I find one I really like....
Well, off I go. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

Good morning, porch. Hey, Boo, I just tried to go to that video, but a little pop-up appeared and said due to the high volume of traffic at that site, I should try again later. (heehee) No, I didn't really go there. I'll take your word for it.
About your dad asking everyone and harping on the subject, I know what you mean. My dad would become obsessed with some annoyance, and would just beat the subject to death. Nothing like your dad's obsession, but annoying nonetheless. His most frequent topic was an open contact between two of his molars, and food would lodge there. It just bothered the heck out of him, and he would ask total strangers what he could do about it. Finally, I took him to a dentist, and he produced a little drawing he had made of a cover that could be attached to the two offending teeth, preventing anything from getting in between! The doc tried to explain that it would cause more problems than it would prevent, but Daddy wasn't buying that. He left, just fuming and threatening to quit brushing those two teeth, "so maybe one will fall out and solve the problem." Oh yes, I understand what you're going through.
Maybe you could go ahead of him and clue somebody in, so that when he asks them the inevitable question, they can appear highly offended and scold him for asking such a question. Maybe a strong negative response will make him quit asking. Probably not, but it's worth a try.
I heard from Tom last night - the tests indicate that Fay's cancer is contained, and they're planning to remove the tumor and about a foot of her colon, and may even be able to do it by scope, rather than open. So - very good news, but please keep praying.
Well, Eloise and I are going to have a lunch-and-mouse-around day, then I have to work tonight, so guess I'd better get off this keyboard. Be blessed, friends! --Romeena

Well, I certainly started something with my comments about Dad. You will have to forgive me because sometimes I lose my sense of what is appropriate conversation. It comes from being a nurse since age 21. When you deal with body parts and their functions as a profession, you get very comfortable talking about them (at least I do. I don't know about Romeena) and when I began working in Labor and delivery, I had to ask very personal questions and "invade the space" of total strangers. I did that kind of work for 13 years and it had a way of making me hard to embarrass when it comes to "anatomy and physiology". I will be more careful to not offend, though. :-)
Well, today is the MIL's birthday so we are taking her out for dinner. Better rest up alittle before my shower (so I will have the strength to stand there until I'm clean) ;-)

Cochlear implants are a wonderful thing but they can be a headache until the child and the parent know all the ins and outs of them. They are very expensive and without help they are about $30,000. The school can help fill out the paper work but it will be up to your daughter and the ENT to get the cochlear. Same with the hearing aid - the school can recommend one but if the school provides it - it is for school only, not the home. Your daughter really needs to see an ENT for all the options Laci has. Cochlears are usually reserved for kids who have almost no hearing and no other options. Signing is a good start but if she has vocal abilities, she needs lots of speech, and an assistive listening device in the classroom. There are all kinds of those - they can amplify a whole room or they can be sat a desk right in front of her.
I remember the girl and I think I remember that ep. It was a little different series but I like those kind. I have been told that I am very Special - must be all my years in special ed. A new series that we like is Warehouse 13. It is on SyFy. It is a little different too. It makes you go Hmmm.

Good Friday morning porch people.
I agree with Spot Boo. You and your Dads escapades have been funny for us to read about. But probably not so funny for you having to deal with it. I hope I have not offended you with my wise cracks. If so, please forgive me. Your life sounds much like an episode of Kings of Queens and what Doug and Carrie have to put up with with Arthur Spooner who lives in their basement. He is one to not let go of a thought easily either.
Good to see you Rev. I bet it's nice to spend some time at home and take care of domestic issues. It would be for me at least. I love having some time to just putter around the house and yard and do a few things.
Gosh it's hard to think that we are almost into September. Time moves right along, huh?
Boo, any house updates? Any drywall going up yet?
Off to work for me.
Asa
August 28, 2009 - Msg 74842:
Offend me, ASA??..No way! You're comments made my day. :-) For me, there is nothing as ther-a-ped-ic as a good laugh and you always seem to give me that! And, to tell you the truth, the whole episode with dad has given me some of my best belly-laughs. The first time he told me about it at my sister's house, I laughed so hard I thought I would have a cardiac arrest and just when I managed to compose myself, he started telling me about how he went to WalMart and asked the greeter about it. That's when I lost it for good. My chest hurt for a few days after from the laughing. I'm just one of those people that when something hits me as funny, I find it impossible to control myself. I have always been that way and it got me into alot of trouble as a kid (and adult, come to think of it). Some women have poor bladder control...I have poor laughter control or something (wonder if there is a pill for that). ;-)
No drywall up yet, Asa. The electicians are still putting up all their wires. There are some young men in tool belts out there everyday and Honey, I have to look the other way. ;-) Anyway, I guess they can't put up the sheetrock until all of that is done and Bruce has to put in all the cable and wire the sound system, etc. this weekend. They are going to have the roof shingled by next week and all my windows came in yesterday. They are propped up against the walls of the garage but I could see what they were like and I really like them. Not sure when those will go in. They finished framing the shower stall in my bathroom and its adequate. Would have liked it a little bigger but I want room for my jacuzzi tub, too. I have to choose a tub this weekend and make a final decision all the exterior doors. I am pretty set on what I want, so it shouldn't be hard. More than you wanted to know?...sorry...when i get started sometimes I don't know where to start. I did make a decision on the color of the house and I am going to go with my original choice, which is white. The design of the house is such that it will look like an old Southern home...like an historical home restored. It has the white pillars across the front porch and will have banisters and spindles (not sure if that is the right terminology). Anyway, to me white will achieve the look I want for the house. When we were deciding on a look for the house before the plans were started, we would go to some of the older, smaller towns in the area that have restored old homes and we looked at ALOT of them before we decided how we wanted the exterior of the house and I am happy to say that I think we are going to achieve it. Enough house talk..
I need to get the chores started and Sean started on his school work.

Oh, forgot to say that yesterday they put this triangle-shaped architecture on the roof above the porch and I hated it. Now, consider that it is 100 degrees, in the middle of the day and the crew just finished this "thing" on the roof that is supposed to look good. I drove in and looked for Mike the builder. After exchanging pleasantries, I jumped right in...."Uh, Mike...you know that thing you build on the roof today?...(with face in hands) I hate it."...Mike: "I knew you would! I told Bruce!"...haha...I hated to ask him to take it off but I had to. He said it would take less than an hour to pry it off but I still felt bad for him. He was good about it, though. I drove by this morning after leaving Erin at school, and the things was already off the roof (GO MIKE!!).

We're supposed to have a record-breaking 101 today. Then cools off and looking at 77 for Sunday. (Everyone talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it).
No comment on the Boo's fathers situation! I did have a couple thoughts, but upon further reflection, decided best not to post those thoughts here...
Prayers for all the needs on the porch. I know I don't always participate with the conversations of the porchsters, but I do think often of you all.

Almost forgot to share something funny that Bruce told me yesterday. I thought of you all because of the subject matter...I don't know what it is with my family! Anyway, Bruce uses a CPAP breathing machine for his sleep apnea and the doc ordered him a new one and he went to the clinic to pick it up after work. The nurse who gave it to him sat down with him to give him a whole lot of instructions. Now, remember that Bruce is very hearing impaired so He was having trouble hearing everything, especially some of the medical terminology that he had never heard before. She mentioned something about needing an order from the doc before any "titration" could be done on the pressure settings. She used the word a few times and Bruce couldn't tell what in the world she was saying. He thought it sounded like she was saying "castration", so finally he got impatient and said, "What are you saying?? Something about castration?!"...The nurse laughed out loud for awhile and said, "No, no...you DON'T want an order for THAT!". I can't believe that happened while I am dealing with this issue with dad!! Crazy!

Hi All.
HIS HELPING HAND
When life becomes a burden
And nothing seems wortwhile.
I ask the Lord to help me
To walk the extra mile.
No problems are too great for Him,
No worries are too small.
He never turns away from me,
He always solves them all.
His helping hands are outstretched
To guide me on my way
And make my life more beautiful
With the dawning of each day.

Loved the story about Bruce - so very typical when is comes to new terminology and being hearing impaired. I had to explain that to high school teachers that one my students may not understand the vocabulary so he will substitute what he knows for what you actually said. Try to teach high school teachers something - that's a joke!

Good evening, porch. It's been a long, busy day. Got off work and was home by 7:40, in bed before 9, got up at 12:30. Moused around here a little, then went to physical therapy at 2:30. It only took the therapist an hour to wear me out completely. Went from there to the grocery store, home by 5.
Got a call from the exterminator who was supposed to meet one of my renters to investigate "ants" he had discovered, in a hole in a wall. Fearing termites, I asked Johnny to go over and meet the guy. Naturally, no one was home, big surprise. So, I called the renter's friend, who speaks English and was also supposed to be there to interpret. Seems everyone was "held over" at work and wouldn't be finished until after 7, but we are welcome to go on in. Seems the ants were discovered while the renter was "remodeling" in the little den. Remodeling?? I knew he was doing a little painting, but remodeling? So, I told Johnny I'd be there in ten minutes, and I was, key in hand. We went in, and oh my.
First glance scared me to death - power tools, paint cans, saws, strips of molding, tarps - all over the place. None of this was authorized. Then I looked more closely. The guy is doing a beautiful job. The painting looks professional, he has put new baseboards down in place of the cheap little things that were there, and the carpets have obviously been protected, because they're very clean. He has chosen beautiful colors, too. We found the hole in the wall to which he referred, but no evidence of termites. Didn't even see any ants. I asked Johnny to do a general maintenance spray anyway, since he was there. I couldn't let him come out for nothing. So, the house is indeed being "remodeled", and nicely too, and I haven't been asked for a thing. Oh, and he pays his rent on time as well. Can't speak English, but he pays his rent. For that, I'll learn a bit more Spanish.
Anyway, I'm back home now, beat to the socks, and trying to decide whether to cook the food I bought earlier, or just go get a burger from Sonic. I guess I'll cook, I'm not in a burger mood.
Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

You make a very good point, M-T...having both would most certainly be a problem, wouldn't it?
You are so right, HM. Poor Bruce comes up with some really strange pronunciations for words. It's pretty funny sometimes.
Wow, that is SO neat, Romeena, especially after the time you had with the last renters! What a blessing.
We actually got a few sprinkles of rain...just enough frustrate us, actually. We are still in the middle of the record-breaking drought and it is getting bad.
Better go spend some time with the kids..

Hello porch family....I can't believe I had a long post ready to send and lost the whole thing. My internet shut off and when I got back on it was gone.
I read the archives and nearly cracked up. It's good to have a good ole laugh....or as MDC said...a "blush":)
Boo.....I know how Bruce feels about not hearing and understanding words. Mine comes from too many years on stage with loud music in my ears all night long.
Ro....hope you got rested up.
Yep Asa....I was glad to get those things done around the house.
Tom....thanks for the poem buddy.
Spot.....since I've been gone so much lately, how bout breakfast on me in the morning? You pick the place.
You all have a great night and a blessed weekend. Be sure to tell someone about the love of Jesus and know that you are always in my prayers!

August 29, 2009 - Msg 74862:
Good evening, porch. REV, I have hearing problems too, but mine come simply from too many years, period. I'm turning into one of those old ladies who go around with a hand cupped behind an ear, saying "Eh, what say? Speak up, sonny!" I just hate that!
Also, either my hearing is worse than I thought, or something is wrong with the sound system on the TV in the living room. It's hooked up to a separate AV system, with seven speakers in all spread around the room (eight if you count the one that's part of the TV.) The sound has gotten, well, blurry. I don't know any other word for it. There's too much bass, it booms and reverberates, voices sound tinny and are not loud enough, and it's uneven and unpredictable. It will suddenly produce sound from a speaker that seems inappropriate, too loud and not in sync with the rest of the sound. I've tried to pull up a screen for adjusting and modifying the sound, but can't find one. I've pushed every button at least ten times. So, guess I'll just do what I should have done in the first place - I'll "call the man!" I bought the whole system from Best Buy, and I think they provide that service. I'll have to pay for it, since the system is several years old, but I can't put up with it the way it is any longer. It's very annoying.
Spot, may I join you all at Cracker Barrel for breakfast? Do you suppose if I put a little bonnet and a doll dress on Toye Starr and warn her not to bark, that I could get away with bringing her along? She just loves to go places with me, and she behaves very well.
Well, I think I'm going to top this evening off with some strawberries and then head for the bed. Kroger had some really pretty ones, really cheap this afternoon, and I love berries. Blueberries, too. Gooood! Be blessed, all. --Romeena
