I'll be back later to tell you of my harrowing

See you again soon.

July 21, 2009 - Msg 74065: Oh, almost forgot...they are pouring the concrete for the foundation on Thursday. Yippee! (I'm taking pictures) OK, now I need your opinions about paint colors for the exterior...think farmhouse, big front porch, upstairs dormers....I have always wanted to paint the house white but Bruce is thinking that he wants to paint it with some other color. The only other color I have seen that I liked was a pale yellow with white trim but he doesn't like it. I am thinking white house with green shutters. Any thoughts?? All opinions appreciated.

Boo

July 21, 2009 - Msg 74066: Oh, also consider that the barn will be traditional barn red with white trim and will be easily seen from the road...so, the house color needs to look good with the barn.

July 21, 2009 - Msg 74070: Oh, and Boo and Ro, I keep forgetting to give an update on my husbands friends son. We've only heard from her twice since the first couple days, and he is now in a hospital in San Antonio, and she is now with him. He is back in the Critical care unit (he was in a regular room for one day). I guess it did turn out to be clots on the liver, and at one point his heart stopped, and they thought a blod clot went to his heart. The last time my husband heard from his friend was yesterday around noon. So, I don't really know what's going on.

Boo

July 22, 2009 - Msg 74073: Oh, and one MORE thing...(sorry). Websites like Sherwin-Williams and Valspar have "color visualizers" in which you can test out paint colors a house. You just pick from the one that most closely resembles your house and you can paint it and the trim any color imaginable...if anyone wants to try. You can also paint different interiors. It's fun.

July 22, 2009 - Msg 74077: Purple Haze? Who let Hendrix in here?? auh2o they ran a special on the History Channel over the weekend about the Moon Landing being a hoax, I watched it and the guy did have what seemed like "valid" points, even went as far to say NASA "took care of" at leat 10 astronauts that knew it was a hoax and threatened to let the cat out of the bag! Now, I may have only been 7 years old, but I remember well gathering around a tv in a classroom watching the program on tv. I know we landed on the moon. History Channel also showed the original special that was aired back in 1969 on Monday. Anywho, some folks just ain't happy unless they are stirring the "poop bucket" at top speed. Boo I checked out those virtual paint visualizers and they are pretty cool. Home Depot also has one right there in the paint department. That Tweety Bird yellow on our house has GOT to go and we are looking at browns/maroons with black shutters, something that looks "woodsy" still haven't settled on a color. Wish we could go "new house shopping" together, we'd have a ball, but I bet Home Depot would kick us out & tell us not to come back. hehe
Let me get off here and get some stuff done, I have our tv anchor's Standard Poodle Claude to groom today and he takes alot out of me, but he is a sweet boy and his mama is very good to me so he's a keeper.

Thanks for the opinion, M-T, sounds great.

Yes, check it out, REV. There are several sites that offer the cyber-painting. God speed, REV.

It would be fun to shop together, Mavis! We could go get some Frappacinos from Starbucks, got to Home Depot, gather our paint samples and home improvement mags/books off the shelf and find some comfy lawn furniture...put our feet up on the tables and make ourselves at home (well, they call it HOME Depot, don't they?). Then we could take turns napping in the display hammocks and sitting in the bathtubs and on the toilets!

Mave, did you ever consider green for the house? Not dark green but maybe a light sage green? It would look woodsy and blend well with it's surroundings.

July 22, 2009 - Msg 74095: Good evening, porch! Good gracious, you all have been pretty chatty since yesterday. That's great!

Me-They, I must take issue with your statement that "all feet are bad." Just where, may I ask, would we be without feet? We'd look pretty funny if our legs just ended at the ankles, to say nothing of the difficulty that would cause when we tried to walk. As for shoes, they can be good or bad. They're good when they keep us from stepping on something that would hurt our long-suffering feet, but they're bad when they cruelly confine a foot that's longing to run free. I just had a pedicure today, have little flowers painted on my big toenails, and am barefoot at this moment, have been most of the day. I say, "Long live feet!"

Boo, I like the idea of the very, very pale blue, perhaps with dark blue trim. Might look a bit "flaggy" with the red barn, but that might be okay too. A soft dove gray with navy or black shutters could be nice. I think you'll want to avoid greens, yellows and maybe browns, with the red barn. Or not. You could make a case for a red barn pretty much standing alone, regardless of the colors around it. A barn just should be red, and of course it should have the white trim you mentioned.

Oh my! A hummingbird just came through the yard, and my feeders are empty! Gotta go fill them, can't let the little thing be disappointed. See you later. --Romeena

I wanted to let you know that the last two weeks the Two Chairs No Waiting Mayberry Podcast has featured interviews with WBMUTBB members Dave & Marsha Scheuermann. They are the owners of the Taylor Home Inn bed and breakfast located near Clear Lake, WI.

We've thus far done two parts (episodes 40 &41) of our interview with the Scheuermann's and we'll have at least one more segment next week. If you've never seen their bed & breakfast, it is a sight to behold. Drop by the podcast web site an give them a listen. You'll also want to see the photos of the Taylor Home Inn. You might even want to plan a trip up to visit them....I know I certainly do.

As a side note...this couple actually met each other right here on The Taylor's Front Porch!

July 22, 2009 - Msg 74099: Boo, I like blue houses. With darker shades of blue for the trim. Just please don't choose turquoise (not sure if that's spelled right). I don't care for that color, and if you do choose that color, I'm afraid I won't be able to ever visit you. As for the barn, I'm with Romeena. It's GOT to be red. Any other color would just be wrong.
I like the nick "Haze", and I believe I'm going to go by that from now on. Since I'm usually walking around in a haze, it would be fitting.
We've got a lot of squash right now too. Yellow crooknecks, yellow straights, and zuchini. If only my tomatoes would turn red. Most of them are still green. But actually in our area our tomatoes don't ripen up until after August, so I know I'm pushing it. I am just looking forward to some fresh salsa!
How big is your hummingbird, Ro? We've had the little teeny ones that you can barely see in the past, but this year, it's a pretty big one. So cute as he pokes his beak (or whatever it's called) into the hole in the feeder. I love hummingbirds. Something about them just makes the backyard peaceful.
Me-They, you mentioned one time that your wife was doing some bee-keeping. How'd that work out? I tried it this year, but it didn't work out so good. I'll try again next year for sure, but I'd be interested to know what kind of bees she grew (harvested, hatched - I can't think of the word). I had Orchard Mason Bees (cute little fellers), but, alas, not many of them survived.

July 22, 2009 - Msg 74100: Didn't see you there, Floyd. I'll check it out later!

July 22, 2009 - Msg 74101: I'm back again. Just went to Floyd's link and visited the Taylor Home website. Fascinating! Now there's a vacation I could really enjoy. Might wait until the "jail" is finished, though. Wouldn't want to miss that!

Haze, (I love that!) my hummer is about thumb size. Are you sure the very tiny hummingbirds are really hummingbirds? I've been fooled before. There are hummingbird moths that look 99.9% like a hummingbird. You have to be close enough to see his little feathery antennae to realize it's not a bird. They even hold their little bodies in the same slight curve that a hummer uses. Cutest little things you ever saw! They visit flowers too, just like the birds, so that strengthens the illusion. Google "Hummingbird moths" and look for the link that says "Image results for Hummingbird Moth" and check it out. Lots of fantastic pictures there. The moth that visited my garden was a White-lined Sphinx, and he's pictured there. The antennae are the giveaway, and to a great extent, the size. They are generally smaller than a real hummingbird, though some are quite large. Beautiful creatures. God must have had so much fun designing them.

Joe and Jorge and a new helper, Margarito, were here today and cleared all the weeds out of the flowerbeds. Then Joe and I went to his brother's garden center and brought home angelonia, periwinkles, begonias, moss rose and a stunning bouganvillea. There wasn't time to plant today, but it will all go in the ground tomorrow. Joe pruned the roses for me, so if I'm lucky, they'll put on some new blooms, and the yard should be looking pretty good by the time my brother-in-law and his family arrive on Aug 4. It's hard to get much going in this heat, but the things we bought will take it, so maybe it will look okay. Even my petunias had fainted dead away, and I do mean dead! The heat has just been brutal.

Well, it's late, guess I'd better feed Toye Starr and myself, and hit the bed. I'll have two little grandsons in the morning, along with yard workers. That should be interesting!

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

I like the light blue idea for the house, but couldn't do the dark blue trim. Maybe light blue with white trim.

I am thankful for feet, too Romeena! I guess Me-They and I could never hang out much because I am a flip-flop addict. My feet have to breathe!...especially in these 1oo degree temps! I was thinking, I'll bet Me-They's feet and ankles are as whiter than Snow White's fanny...probably never see the light of day.

HAZE, you are too funny. I hate turquoise, too, so no worries.

Prayers contiue for Deb.

Better get to bed. I have to be up early...they are pouring the foundation. The builder suggested that we, as a family, make a type of time capsule to put into the cornerstone of the foudation. We put prayers, scriptures and our wishes for the new home on paper and folded them and placed them into a sealed container, which will be placed into the cement. I will also have the kids put their handprints into the cement somewhere on the carport.

Goodnight!

July 23, 2009 - Msg 74108: Good morning everyone.

Okay, all you feet people...ROMEENA: I guess I should have said that "all feet are ugly." We sure do need feet, but I see them as utilitarian and not for showing off, kind of like a spleen or something. Having been around 43 odd years (some more odd than others) I certainly have been around my fair share of feet. So, BOO, we sure could hang out. I just won't look down. Pedicure, painted flowers, drop lighting, or disco ball, nothingh makes a foot look better than being in a closed-toe shoe. Yes, BOO, my feet are lily white and as soft as a baby's bottom. And proportioned nicely, as feet go. Y'know what grosses me out more than feet, though? That disgusting Ped-Egg commercial. Have you seen that horror show?

HAZEL: The Mrs. bees survived the winter okay. However, they swarmed in the spring (half the hive left). Not sure why, but a lot of experienced beekeepers in our area had the same problem this year (maybe the fallout is effecting their milk?). Still, the hive is fairly large and seems to be pretty healthy so its possible we may still get some honey thsi season. But they're on their own for awhile; the Mrs. hasn't done much with them or even checked on them in several weeks and probably won't for a few more. She's just not up for it right now. The boxes (whatever they're called) are pretty heavy lifting now and take two people. I wonder who she'll get to help ;-). I'm sorry, I don't know what kind of bees they are, but they sure ain't what I'd call "cute."

Thanks for breakfast, POSSUM.

BOO: Tell Bruce that watching cement dry is about the most boring thing since, well, watching cement dry.

That reminds me...I was watching "Good Eats" teh other evening and Alton Brown, who was doing stuff with toast, said something like, "This sliced bread is the best thing since itself." Well I must have laughed for five minutes. I know it's only midly amusing, but for some reason it just hit me as fall-down funny.

You're also absolutely right about that ped-egg commercial. It's disgusting. I've been enjoying my parmesan cheese in slices, rather than grated, since I saw that thing. Yuck!!

Now as for watching cement dry being boring, it all depends on whose cement it is. When it's the foundation of your new home, it can be absolutely fascinating!

July 23, 2009 - Msg 74112: Hey, email me that church thing please, Me-They. (if you have a chance).

Well, Bruce didn't watch the cement for long. What was interesting, and I had never seen before is the equipment they used on this job. There the usual cement truck, then this other huge truck with a giant arm on the top that had a tube on the end. The cement went into the huge truck and then shot through the arm and out the end of the tube. The thing was really big, looked like a crane or something. Anyway, I am sure you guys are familiar with this strange monster-like spider arm of a contraption, but it was new to me. I got pictures to send.

Now the kids just have to go out after noon and put their hand prints in the cement. They will actually remove the forms this afternoon and we will be walking on it by evening. Hard to believe. The builder said the lumber will be delivered tomorrow and the framing will start...things are moving right along.

Think I will "chill out" for a bit.

In what episode of TAGs does the name
"Lavidia" come up?
I'll give ya hints if you need some.

PS-Anyone can answer.

July 23, 2009 - Msg 74121: Glad to hear that about that new Behr paint. I was thinking about using it for a project and was wondering how good it was. I tend to be skeptical about products that seem to do it all (I still don't believe that a shampoo with conditioner in it can be any good--how can you strip oils with soap only to add them at the same time?). If it can stand up to your beating sun, it should be okay around here.

I can picture the scene with that name in it in my head, but for the life of me can't remember what episode it is. Thanks! Just what I needed! More frustration in my life.

July 23, 2009 - Msg 74122: Lavidia is in the episode where Barney sends all the girls over to Andy's house, hoping he'll pick a wife.I think I'm right, but may be confused after all that toilet sitting- ha!
Yep,I have a birthday coming up,MDC. It's the big 5-0 next Thursday.Hard to believe.
Well,I'd better scoot.boo might wanna go terrorize Home Depot again,so I need to be on stand by!

possum once more

July 23, 2009 - Msg 74124: Thanks for the welcome back, all.

Speaking of birthdays, I think someone here on the porch is having one tomorrow and I believe it's one of those 'ending in 0' ones, but I'm not gonna give them a too hard of a time about it, since I'm having one of those this year as well. *grin*

Glad to hear things are progressing nicely on your 'homestead', Boo. I think a light to medium blue with some white (or tan or beige) and red (like your barn) accents would be just gorgeous. I remember when we built our garage/MIL quarters 6 years ago, I'd love to just sit out in the driveway and watch them build. I remember putting the girls' prints in the concrete as well. Didn't think of putting in some kind of time capsule, though - that's a really neat idea. We've also had good success with Behr paint.

You can hang out with me if your want, M-T. I almost always wear socks (I hate for my feet to get cold), and only wear sandals for church. Hope your family is getting into a nice little routine with Miss Lila, and your Mrs is able to get plenty of rest. I'm sure Miss Lila gets plenty of love with big brother and sister still home for the summer. When do they head back to school? Evie goes back Aug 19. She (and I) can hardly wait. :)

Well, I'll get off here and get some things done before hubby gets home. Prayers for all.
AFD

July 23, 2009 - Msg 74125: Hey there AFD. The last few nights the Mrs. has been feeding Lila about 11:30 p.m., then she wakes up around 2:30-3:00, then again at about 6:30, so things are evening out. Both seem to be sleeping better, which means I do, too ;-).

Nora and Chad head back on August 24. We can't wait either. I love my kids dearly but darned if they don't pluck my nerves. Veda starts preschool in Sept. She's going two times a week for two hours. The preschool is the same one the otehrs went to, which is right across the street from my work. She doesn't get to play with any kids her own age so it'll be nice.

I know I'll forget since I'll be in and out tomorrow, so happy birthday HOMEMAKER!

July 23, 2009 - Msg 74128: Good afternoon, porch. Long day of yard work (I didn't do much of it, but still had to be involved - you know how that is!) Not quite finished - Joe will return tomorrow to do some adjusting and trouble shooting on the sprinkler system. Then we're fiished. The island flowerbed looks gaw-jus!

Possum, I think you're right about the episode where Barney brings the girls to Andy's house, but if I'm not mistaken, the girl's name is Lavinia, not Lavidia. At least that's what it sounds like to me, but that could be because I know someone named Lavinia.

Well, guess I'll try to grab a VERY short nap before going to work tonight. This is going to be a long shift - I've been up since 7:00, and maybe an hour of sleep now - oy!

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

July 23, 2009 - Msg 74129: Er, that's "finished" up there, not "fiished". Good grief. --Romeena

July 23, 2009 - Msg 74130: Yeah,Ro,I really thought it was "Lavinia" too, pretty much for the same reason you stated.Lavinia is a Southern name, and I know of a few ladies around here with that name. I was thinking that MDC might have heard it wrong, but I didn't want to be rude (I got a rude, bet you've never gotten a rude before!) by saying anything. But.. maybe MDC has come up with a doozy of a trivia question, and he DID mean " Lavidia".In that case,I am stumped!
Is tomorrow homemaker's birthday? I know of somebody else having one tomorrow- first name (Porch name) begins with an "R" and ends with an "A". Can y'all guess?! I'll save my birthday wishes for tomorrow-we'll have to throw a party! I'll head upthe entertainment.Maybe I can get Bobby Fleet & His Band With The Beat to play! Boo,you make a cake, and perhaps Asa will show up with his fire extinquisher- he enjoys keeping those birthday candles under control,ya know!

There's been speculation that today is also homemaker's birthday,so I'm gonna go ahead and say Happy Birthday to homemaker!!

I say let's have a big birthday bash tonight.Spot, can we use your barn? I'll make sure somebody runs ya a big hunk of birthday cake over to the Power company and I'll do my best to see that we don't set your barn a blazing with all those candles! Still trying to get Asa & his trusty fire extinquisher-if not,we'll just run the garden hose. Asa,get up man,and get ready,ya hear me?!
See y'all at the birthday bash.I'll be rolling in later with Freddie Fleet and the band!

possum under a rock

July 24, 2009 - Msg 74137: Happy Birthday to Homemaker and Romeena?! Wow, I didn't know Ro had a birthday this month...where have i been?

Thanks Possum. Still no kitty this morning and we have looked and looked! Bruce thought he spotted Tiger across the street with some other cats but when I went to see about it, it wasn't Tiger. I am thinking that maybe a neighbor has him. It's too early to start knocking on doors but we will do that later and put up some signs, I guess. Erin and Sean cried for about 30 minutes and then they seemed to be ok. Mostly they were concerned about the cat's safety since he has always been inside and is still very young.

Boy, I got one of those bad headaches before I went to bed last night and I had it all night and this morning it is still there on the left side of my head. Maybe the coffee will help.

The church youth have a work day today and I have to take the boys to that, so I better finish my coffee and see if I can find some medicine to take. See ya later...

Oh, Possum, if you are afraid of a fire in SPOT's barn, you could come to my place...my barn is just a slab so we couldn't do any harm to anything! All we need is some lawn chairs, a bbq grill and something to cook.

Boo

July 24, 2009 - Msg 74141: Good morning everyone.

I'm terrible with birthdays, so I hope I didn't start a rumor about it being HOMEMAKER's birthday. At least I'm not some traveling show salesman from New York City. I did think I heard someone, somewhere (Facebook?) mention that it was her big day today.

Happy birthday to ROMEENA, anyway! What is it? 38, 39?

I just drove by the homesite and the back wall of my bedroom is already up. I can't believe how fast they work!

Well, time to take a break. It is SO hot outside. Supposed to be 99 with a heat index of 110 today.

July 24, 2009 - Msg 74149: Boo, thanks for the offer of us having the bash at your place. I think we will politely decline though- 110 degrees?! Maybe Spot has A/C in his barn,or fans,at the very least. Things will get cookin' once those groovy bands start playing, plus all those candles throw off a lot of heat! (Hey,I can tease hm & Ro,cause my day is just around the corner.Oh boy.Ha!)
Hope the cat returns home soon. I keep hearing Laurie Berkner (she's a kiddie tune singer/songwriter) singing her 'hit' song- "The Cat Came Back"-maybe once I know that the cat is home, the voices in my head will leave me alone- LOL!!
See y'all at the birthday party later!
