Mornin' Y'all! Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Continued prayers for Asa and his folks.
Laci is spending the weekend with me. She didn't wake up and party last night,so I actually got some sleep! No barking dogs either.
May I brag on our talking dog? I tease him about not being as young as he used to be,but he e-mailed me to let me know he did the ENTIRE 30 mile bike race yesterday! Way to go,Spot!
Well, let me get Laci out to play in the sunshine before things heat up too much- gonna be in the low 90s!

Good afternoon, porch! Just got home from a trip to a sporting goods store with my brother. I had previous advice from a police officer friend, and another friend who knows weapons, and my brother agreed with them, so he and I went shopping. I bought a weapon, a Taurus Judge. It is a fearsome critter. I will be going to the range to get comfortable with it, and learn how it handles. Many years ago, I was pretty accurate, so we shall see. It's a 5-shot automatic, and uses a choice or a combination of shotgun shells, or .45 Colt shells. The shotshells can be either little birdshot, or a 4-pellet shell that will "stop a zombie" to quote the man in the store. I don't anticipate ever firing it anywhere but at the range. I pray I never have to, but nevertheless, I'm ready. Isn't that a sad state of affairs?
Beautiful day here today. Hot, but beautiful. It's 92 degrees, bright sunshine, very little breeze. My flowers are looking so much better after we weeded and pruned and deadheaded everything. The roses are starting to flush out again, I'll probably get another whole course of bloom out of them. They really respond to pruning.
Spot, if you and Miss Sherry are going on the cruise, you'd better get your reservations in. I sure hope you do go, that would just be so much fun!
Well, off I go. Toye Starr has been alone all day, and she's pretty chapped about it. I need to go give her some cuddle time, poor little thing. Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

Romeena, if you need help with that gun, Goober would be the one to ask, he knows about cars and guns both. Hope everyone has had a good Sunday. Was wanting to ask ya'll to pray for our church, our pastor resigned after 17 years today, no problems or hard feelings or anything like that, he just said God was leading him to move on. So now we'll be looking for another pastor. Pretty sad to say the least he'll be leaving the end of the month. Thanks ya'll are the cats!!--Salty Dog

I envy you, Romeena. I love going to the shooting range and I am a good shot...well, I guess I still am, it's been awhile. Since we had the kids, no more guns and no target practice. I understand where you are coming from and I had a firearm in my home when i was single. I don't blame you for having one and you are very wise for knowing how to use it.
Aww, sorry about your pastor leaving, Salty. I know how hard that can be, especially after 17 years. Prayers for your church family.

Hello porch family.....Still in east TN doing concerts.
Ro....Good for you....the Taurus Judge is a great defense weapon. Throws a very good pattern with the 4-10 shotgun shells within 30 feet. And the recoil is not as bad as some people think it would be. Very good handgun.
Salty.....I know that God will bring in the right pastor for you folks.
Spot.....hope you and Mis Sherry have a great time on your bike trip.
Good race today. Looks like Jimmie is heading toward a 4th straight championship.
Well you all have a good night and know that I'm praying for you!

Sorry for not updating sooner, but Kai is back home safe and sound. Well, sometimes at night she doesn't sleep very soundly, but that is expected. She is still in some pain at times. We have to give her some pain meds every few hours. And then her other blood pressure and have-to-go-pee meds at other times.
Luckily that will not go on forever.
Yeah, we were able to go home Saturday, after deciding to stay another night on Friday due to her rough night she had on Thursday. Though they had said she could go home on Friday.
We tried to make it into church today, but only stayed about 15 minutes because Kai wasn't feeling up to it. Otherwise, she is coming along nicely.
Salty, I know I would feel bad if our pastor decided to leave. I really enjoy his sermons. That, and he is quite a good guy. It was a blessing to have him and his wife up there during Kai's surgery. They didn't have to be there, but he told me he wouldn't have been anywhere else.
They made a scary time a little less scary just by being there.
Boy I love a woman who isn't afraid to shoot a gun, and knows how to. And I don't blame you one bit for having one, Ro. I wish my wife didn't have such an aversion to them. You never know when you made need it, especially nowadays.
Hope you all have a good Monday!

Sterling wrote, "Boy I love a woman who isn't afraid to shoot a gun...", sounds funny~ You are something! Someday you might be thankful that your wife has an aversion to them. You might sleep easier ;-)
Why am I up at 6am in the summer? I really had planned to sleep until 8 everyday but that just isn't working for me.

June 01, 2009 - Msg 73028:
Good morning, all. Thanks for the positive words about my owning a gun. I hesitated for quite a while before actually buying one, but the way things are going, I think it was the thing to do. Before I could decide to buy it, I had to do some soul-searching and determine whether I really would use it in a crisis, and I finally concluded that yes, I would. I wouldn't want to - the idea of actually firing a gun at another person is abhorrent - but I finally realized that if it came down to them or me, or one of mine, I could. And so, the Judge now lives in my nightstand drawer. I'm surprised at how many people seem to be familiar with this particular weapon. Two police officer friends, three other male friends, a cousin, and now REV seem to feel that it was a good choice, so that makes me feel good.
I'm so happy to hear that sweet Kai is doing well. Sterling, I know this has been rough on you and your wife, but you have made it possible for Kai to get through a procedure that will give her a much more enjoyable life. God bless you.
Salty, I'm sorry you're losing your pastor. That's always a hard time. I remember when our dear BO Baker left my church, to retire. We thought our life as a church was over, but it wasn't. God will always raise up another servant. Things won't be the same, but they may be even better, who knows? Prayers for you and your congregation, my friend.
Well, guess I'll go find some lunch. Maybe I'll just go up to the Sonic that's about a block away, and get a good old burger. I do enjoy their burgers, especially when they honor my request for extra pickle and tomato. Yep, that's it, a Sonic burger and a big glass of tea. Then a nap before going to work tonight.
Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Don't worry about me, MDC. I don't particularly like high places. (heehee)
I just sent most of you an email with an attachment, and it probably took a while to load. It's worth it. However, if you received it twice, I apologize. I tried to send it once, and it said the first attempt failed, and nothing showed up in my "sent" file. So I tried again. It went through, showed up once in the "sent" file, but then I got TWO copies in my inbox. I have my own address included in all my group lists, so I can see for sure what was received. I always try to remove old addresses, but as my own copies show, many times they reappear after I've deleted them. Wonder what causes that??
Yay, my pond water is clearing up beautifully. It had gotten just awful, couldn't see a fish if it was six inches below the surface. I called my water garden guru, who immediately asked me the age of my UV light. Three years old. Hmmm. She says they're good for about a year, maybe a little more. It will still emit light, but the UV portion has degraded to the point of being ineffective. Well, I would imagine that was the problem. I ran over to her store, bought a $65 bulb (argh!) and installed it. Within three days, the water has cleared miraculously. Guess I learned a lesson. I had been cleaning the filter of trapped algae almost daily. Now it's down to three days, and will probably get even better. The fish are ecstatic. I've also ordered a large beach umbrella to shade at least part of the pond and reduce the algae-encouraging sunlight that hits the water.
Well, I feel a nap coming on, then must get up and go to work. Gotta pay for that dratted bulb! --Romeena

Good afternoon to the Porch! It's a fine day here in my neck of Mayberry, and I hope everybody's day is going as good as mine.Hey to my bud Asa. I was sorry to read about your brother-in-law's passing. It's gonna be hardest on his momma and your wife, and I pray God gives you the strength and wisdom to know how to comfort your wife and in-laws. God bless you, brother.
Romeena, I'm so jealous that you got a Taurus Judge. I've been wanting one since my friend Steve introduced me to them. I bought a Ruger 9mm right before the election (Halloween day, as it turns out), and I'm a good shot with it. My beloveded Charlene can really ping up the place with her little 22 cal, too. But a JUDGE is the best home-defense weapon on the market today. Like you, I hope I never have to fire my weapon at another human being. But if I had a Judge it'd be easier to SCARE the boogers outta the booger-man, rather than put a hole in him and mess up a perfectly good rug. Do you mind telling me where you purchased your Taurus? You can email me if you don't wanna say it right out loud on the Porch here. Oh, and I'm still waiting on a date for you and me (and whoever) to get together for some good fried chicken. I'm starting to feel like you're avoiding me or something. :-)
Hey Floyd, you know me and Charlene would love to go on that Mayberry Cruise with you all, but the Obama admin has hit our pocketbooks pretty hard this year, so we'll have to wait and see about next year. I hope there IS a next year!
Sterling, it's good to hear that Kai is back home where she belongs. Having an ailing child is one of the most frustrating things a parent can go through, but you sound like you're coming through the ordeal together, and that can only make you stronger as a family.
Salty, we lost a pastor at our church yesterday too. He was an associate pastor (not the head mountie) and he has accepted a position with a church in St. Louis. We'll sure miss him. I'll keep your church in my prayers that they find just the right pastor to lead your congregation where the Lord wants 'em to be led!
Well, I'd better get back to work. They don't pay me around here just for looking good!
I'll see ya.

Good evening, porch! Hey, Goober! It's good to hear from you. Actually, I'm going to be in Branson with a group from the church in July, but not on the dates you're going to be there. We tried to set it up that way, but the timeshares we'll be using were already filled on those dates. Drat! That would have been really cool! About the cruise - when you first go to mayberry.com, and the home page comes up, there are about three separate paragraphs, advertising sites or events. They change, like a marquee, so if you don't see the one about the cruise, just hang on for a minute, and it will appear.
Rafe, I've been sort of waiting for Daphne to pop the current little pea, and recover from the event, because I think she'd probably throw something at me if we went to Babe's without her! Should be soon....hmmmm, I suppose we could go more than once??? I'll email her and see how things are going with her.
I'm amazed that so many people know about the Judge! I know next to nothing about individual firearms, and knew zero about this particular model. It was just highly recommended by a police officer friend - in fact, he brought me a page copied from an ad, so I'd be sure to get the right thing. His recommendation was seconded by several other men whose opinions I value, so I just went hunting for it, didn't really consider anything else. Apparently they're so popular that they're a little hard to come by, but I found mine at an Academy Sports store. There are two models, one a little larger and heavier than mine, but I felt like the 2 1/2" chamber would be all I needed or could handle. It comes in a 3" chamber version as well. I never knew a handgun could fire shotgun shells, but this one does, in addition to .45 Colt slugs. It seems strange to be talking about this, but the times, they are a-changin'.
Well, guess I'll go rustle up some supper. Spot, those buttered grits sound wonderful, and just the thing to go with a couple of pork chops I've got. Yum!
Prayers for all the porch kids, as they enter a rough patch in life. Adolescence is always a difficult time, and Godly kids are no exception. They face the same stressors, they're just perhaps a little better prepared and supported. Just love 'em, and hang on.
Well, be blessed, friends. Toye Starr says 10-4. --Romeena

Howdy friends.
Sorry to have been away. But been tied up with the service and all. We had the service yesteray, and it went pretty well. The family asked if I'd conduct it. I hope I did ok. I feel just so sad for my MIL. She is just a wreck, bless her heart. I really worry about her, as you mentioned Rafe. Although she is a devoted Christian, this has really taken it's toll on her.
You have my prayers for Sean Boo. It sounds like he is indeed at the crossroads, but he has a big advantage in that he has you and Bruce for parents, and are wise enough to know (and care) what it is he's facing. Your love for your children is evident in your posts Boo. And that one ingrediant alone will overcome tons of obstacles. So keep on loving him and seeking the Lords wisdom in dealing with him, and I as-sure you all will be well. He may stray some, most of us have at one time or another, but he has been raised by goodly parents, and as long as you two stay the course, you all will be blessed. At least that's my take on it, and I ain't taking it back. :)
Thanks for all the prayers and thanks Possum for the Krispy Kremes.

On, Man...I had a long post and then reached for my coffee and accidently hit a key that erased it! I hate that! Well, my long post may have bored all of you, anyway.
I will condense my thoughts...Ro, does that Jusge have much of a kick? I really like the idea that it uses shotgun shells, too. I might want one later.
Hope you get to go to the lake, SPOT. Catch one for me, buddy!...if you go fishing, that is. ;-)
Hi Possum, thank you for those prayers for Sean. He has his first session with the counselor today. I really like this guy and counselled with him myself a couple of years ago. I trust him and think he will do very well with Sean.
I did sleep in this morning and it was wonderful! I woke up early and forced myself to go back to sleep, and it worked. I feel very well-rested and ready to conquer the last of the laundry. Wonder if Me-They is back yet...he probably has a suitcase full of shorts that need washing.

Thank you, Asa. Your words encouraged me so much, you just have no idea. Lord bless you, Asa.
I am so sorry about your MIL, bless her heart. I can't even imagine her sorrow. My prayers go out to her.
It sounds like you stepped up and did what had to be done, even though it must have been very difficult to conduct the funeral. You are just that kind of a guy, though..one to step up and help where you are needed. Such a good and true heart.

Good morning, porch. Asa, how kind of you to be willing to conduct that service. That must have been hard, but I'm sure your MIL appreciated it so much. Prayers for her, I know something of what she's going through, and it isn't easy. Give her room, she may withdraw for a while, but she'll be okay in time.
Boo, I haven't fired the Judge yet, waiting for a chance to go to the range. However, I'm told it has a significant but manageable recoil, worse with the .410 shells than with the .45 slugs. It's quite heavy to hold, which should reduce the recoil somewhat. As soon as I've had a chance to practice with it, I'll let you know.
Well, guess I'll scare up some lunch. I've got a couple of leftover pork chops and some green beans. Sounds good to me! --Romeena

The gun shop owner I talked to about purchasing one said that if there was an intruder in house - the judge would at least wound him no matter how bad his aim was! In Indiana - you can shoot on your own property if you feel threatened. At least we still have the right to bear arms.
Bass Pro carries them and they have a waiting list. The gun dealer here locally said he also has a waiting list.

Boo,I think Me-They said he would be back on June 9th. Hope he took plenty of clean drawers with him- we don't want him washing dirty drawers in the Atlantic ocean- yuck!!
I guess we were on our own for lunch. Let's all head over to Me-They's for supper. We can raid his pantry & throw something together. I think he left a spare key with Barney,so we won't have any trouble getting in!

Good luck with VBS, MDC. We have VBS at our church every summer and we almost always help out. I took a summer off last year but now I am eager to help out this summer. I think we have some sort of Australian theme this year. Do you have your VBS in the evening? We started doing ours in the evening a few years ago and it works out much better because we have alot more help and the men can participate in the duties.

June 03, 2009 - Msg 73076:
Good afternoon, friends. MDC, you asked a question up there ("are times really that bad?") and then you pretty much answered it yourself in the rest of your post. In this "land of free enterprise", the more the government owns, the less the people own, and the easier it will be to exert governmental dominance over the population. That is the goal, you know. We are already looking back over the last ten or twenty years, and wondering how on earth we got where we are. Can you imagine what it will be like in the next ten or twenty years, with ultra-liberal socialism in charge? It makes my blood run cold. Yes, Jesus is Lord, and most of us here acknowledge that, but friends, nationwide, I fear we're becoming the minority.
Many people call themselves Christian, but haven't a clue what that really means, and if push came to shove, would fall away like dry leaves. Others describe themselves as "spiritual", which can include anything from The Gospel According to Oprah, to worshiping the Corn God. God has said He will not leave us, but nowhere did He say He will run begging after us when we leave Him. When the nation as a whole deserts God, the remnant who still holds onto Him will suffer along with the rest. The difference is, we will still have our place with Him in eternity.
I'm sorry if I'm coming across as negative and as a doom-sayer. I'm not really that way, I am by nature an upbeat, positive and happy person. My glass is usually half-full! There are things happening in our world today, however, that just cannot be ignored. If we don't address them, and correct them, we are going to regret it. I only wish I knew how that is to be done. In the voting booths, I suppose, but it may be too late for that.

I just found this in the newspaper, and it's a perfect illustration of how far we've come. Right here in Mansfield, TX, just a few miles from where I live, a woman put a 3'x5' American flag up on her office wall, in honor of Memorial Day, in the hospital in which she is employed. She soon received a call from Administration - "I was told that several people found it offensive, but if even one person complained, it would have to be taken down to maintain an air of neutrality." Another employee, an African immigrant who has been in America for 14 years, complained, and actually removed the flag. Her objection was that the flag was "too big". The blogosphere and radio talk shows thoroughly roasted the hospital for sanctioning the removal of the flag. The administration caved, and invited the woman to restore the flag to its place. Obviously, without the local pressure, the affront would have been allowed to stand.
Another thing - I challenge you to Google "Prof. Jose Angel Gutierrez", and just see what is being taught and preached by this man at the University of Texas at Arlington. You won't like it.
And on those happy notes, I'm going to catch a nap before going to work tonight. Lots of little anchor babies to be delivered, I'm sure, and yes, they're sweet - every one of them. It's not their fault. --Romeena

Asa I'm proud of you friend for stepping up like that, I know it was hard, but you will be blessed for it, I just know it. Well, gotta go to work tonight, then am off until next Monday night. Friday will be a tough day - a day of rejoicing for our sweet Miss Betty, as she is already in Heaven with the Lord, but a hard day for those of us who loved her, as we gather at the church in which she served for so long, to say our goodbyes. She is already missed, and it will be a good long while before that eases, for most of us. She was special.
Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

Thanks for all the nice comments. It really wasn't all that big a thing to conduct the service though. I'm glad the family thought enough of me to ask me to do it.
Ro, I'm sorry for the loss of Betty. Not so much for her, because we know where she is, but for the void her passing has created and for loved ones left behind who are and will miss her. Prayers for you all.
Hey to Goober. Good to see you posting again.
Well it would seem we are now a Muslim nation instead of a Christian nation. Hmmm, wonder when that all happened. I must have missed that memo. :(
I went to that page you challanged us to Romenna. Got my blood boiling. I just don't get it. The public is paying him to teach this nonsense? I swear, I think the world is going crazy. Can you even imagine it the tables were turned, and this was being said by a white American about Latinos, the firestorm this would cause? But this is the first I've heard of this guy, and I feel I'm pretty well informed. Ahhh, don't you just love our news media? They are on top of things, aren't they? (nbc is to busy sitting in the whitehouse drinking the kool aid to worry about such things as this guy)
Good to see you back Mayberry Deputy.
Mavis, did you get moved in to the new house yet? Is the issue with the former owner resolved? That was getting kind of weird with her.
Better get going. Got lots of bullets to polisg this day.
Prayers for all.

Not in the new house yet Asa carpenter problems and workers that don't want to do thier jobs so we're behind on moving in. Hopefully by the end of the month, but I've said that before. As for the nut that used to live there, ever since we made her come get his remains we haven't heard anything from her. We do have No Trespassing signs up and the sheriff's deputy did make a point to tell her she could be charged if she came back. So far, so good. Anyways, gotta head down to the electric company today to sign a check, seems Mr Neff forgot to sign one of the checks that we paid the bill with and for some reason, they want thier money! Wonder what causes that??

Mavis, I CANNOT believe you are still waiting to get into the new house! That has to be driving you crazy. Bruce and I just signed the contract with the builder this morning and the appraiser should be out this week, then the foundation guy can get started. Should be starting by the end of the month! Finally...of coure, we'll see what happens. I know when it comes to building, sometimes there are many hang-ups along the way.
Well, I'm sitting here with a tiny kitten on my shoulder. When we went to church last night, one of my friends had a litter of kittens she was trying to find homes for and I couldn't resist getting one for Erin. He is a little gray-striped kitty and still very little and cries alot when you aren't holding him or playing with him. The kids named him "Tiger" (how original)...I told them they should name him something from TAGS, but they wouldn't do it.
Well, better go do something...

I wanted to share an easy cake recipe for those who like to bake. It is SUPER simple and was given to me by a friend. I tried it and it is really wonderful (if you like banana). Here are the ingredients:
1 box of yellow cake mix
2 eggs
1/4 C oil
1 C water
1 ripe bananas
Mash bananas in bowl, add remainder of the ingredients and mix with mixer on medium for 2 minutes. Poor into greased Bundt, tube pan, or any kind of cake pan, really. Bundt works really well. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes to 50 minutes, depending on depth of pan you use. Let cool for 10 or 15 minutes before icing.
Icing:
1 rip banana
1 container of store-bought vanilla icing (would probably be REALLY good with chocolate, too.
Mash banana in bowl. Microwave icing until slightly melted, then mix with the banana. Let icing melt down over warm cake. I would probably have put coconut on top, but my husband hates coconut. I think this would also be really good with pineapple added to icing.
I think I will take a little snooze while Erin is at St. Susan's for the day. I only slept three hours last night and Erin has her end of the season little league party tonight at the local pool....need to rest up for that!
