here are two math questions for you
True or False and explain your answer for both and you might be smarter than a 6th grader. . .
The greatest common factor of two odd numbers is always odd.
The greatest common factor of an odd number and an even number is always odd.
All answers accepted - no cash prizes given.

March 09, 2009 - Msg 70835: Thomas, have you been hittin' the mulberry squeezin's?

Possum, I started with half a melatonin and it was too much for me. I only took 1/4 tab because anything more made me feel a little tired the next day. Also, someone mentioned here on the porch that some Melatonin is made from the brains of cattle and there has been some concern about the possibility of contracting Mad Cow Disease from it. I called the company that made the Melatonin I was using and they said that it was made in the laboratory and was safe. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the brand but I know I got it from WalMart and it had a red and white label. It was a well known drug company but I just can't remember it...I am thinking the name started with an "S".

Sorry HM, but I am mathematically challenged...

Rehab was interesting tonight..the girls were really rowdy and there was a fight that broke out in the hallway during church. Not sure how much got a across to them but we have a few girls right now who are serious about following God and that is encouraging.

Better get Erin to bed.

Boo

March 09, 2009 - Msg 70836: I just remembered the brand of Melatonin I used. It was Schiff. As I recall, Possum, it did help. I felt more rested and like I got better sleep...LOTS of dreams, though, so be ready for that in case it happens to you.

March 09, 2009 - Msg 70837: Hello folks;

I assume some of you know about the senseless killing of a pastor in a Maryville Illinois church this past Sunday morning. I am having trouble trying to understand what happened.
The news claims that the gunman's weapon jammed after the fourth shot, and that the pastor's Bible deflected at least one bullet. Yet the pastor still died from a bullet through the heart.
Here is my problem. Had the pastor lived, we probably would not question people who would praise and thank God for performing what seemed like two miracles (the Bible deflection and the gun jamming). But since the pastor died, what seems like two miracles now seems like two coincidences.
While it does seem true that others in the congregation may have been saved, it's the death of the pastor that bothers me. He did not have to die to save the others.
Are we sometimes too quick to classify a coincidence as a miracle? I would love to read your thoughts on this matter.

Hm, I will give your post some thought today, Poor Horatio. I hope more of the story unfolds in time and we have a better idea of what actually happened with the shooter...did they find out who he was or discover a motive? Here is another thought that I had; we always here about these terrible tragedies because they weren't prevented for reasons we can't understand, but we will also never know of them many tragedies that did not occur because God, circumstances or good men intervened.

Would love to chat longer, but I have to get Erin up.

Oh, one more thing...this question is for Dr MDC..I am having that old sciatic nerve pain in my back but can't take pain meds due to the stomach pain they cause me. Do you know of something to take that would reduce the inflammation without hurting my stomach??? Are you going to start charging a consultation fee??;)

March 10, 2009 - Msg 70840: Ooh,now I'm re-thinking taking melatonin! Cow brains? Yuck! Didn't seem to help much anyway- still woke up several times during the night. No strange dreams though. The brand I have is Sundown, the tablets come in 300 MCG (what is that? Milligrams?) Anyway,I broke one in half, per MDC's suggestion. That means I took 150 MCGs.Is that the right dosage? I might try it awhile longer, but cow brains? Gotta get past that somehow.Maybe I'l eat some Jell-O! Ha! Y'all do know what Jell-O is made of,don't ya?!

Poor Horatio,I don't think I'd call what transpired around that church shooting a "miracle" either. To me it would have been a miracle if when the guy FIRST fired, the gun jammed, and he was apprehended BEFORE anyone was hurt or killed.Still,I am thankful for those church members who were able to subdue him before he committed more travesties.Hard to understand how and why the pastor lost his life. Guess that's just one of the many things I may never understand.
I see that ol' spot's slacking off on fixin' breakfast (Wake up,spot!) so I'll throw something together.how about bacon,juice,coffee,grits,biscuits,eggs-heck,the works! Y'all enjoy!
Boo,how's Erin feeling? Hopefully better.

Switching to day light savings time has messed with my body clock. It will take me a few weeks to adjust. I like that it stays light longer but losing the hour surely has messed with my sleep cycle.

My kids got back from their youth retreat and had a great time. This Sunday is youth Sunday so they will pretty much run the morning service, the youth minister will preach and sunday evening they are having a special cermony regarding a true love waits program. They youth pastor has been doing a series on true love waits the past few months. I will let you know how the ceremony goes.

Patrick leaves for Nashville on Thursday with one of his teachers and a couple of other students. He will be part of a mock school board debate team that will discuss school related issues. Prayers for their safe travels. It will be a quick trip as they will come home Friday night.

Breakfast menu will be: pancakes, sausages, eggs,
bacon, maple syrup, fruit, sliced tomatoes, and coffee, tea.

Blessings and prayers to all.

PH-I'm not sure I see a miracle in the story you mentioned. I do feel that all good things come from God. Also, I know there are miracles and I know there are coincidences. You bring up a very good point.
If the Bible stopped all 4 bullets, then yes,

really may have just been coincidence.
I have always considered a "miracle" to be
something truly supernatural, such as cancer
definitely seen in a biopsy and MRI, but then
suddenly it is totally gone.Something like that.
My prayers tho for all involved. I hope that the shooter is charged with a hate crime. If he had
gone into a mosque, you KNOW that would be the case. Let's watch and see.

I think you could try a whole one. Despite waking

light any "longer!" ha
BOO- About a month ago, I actually started to go

I tried to sit down and take breaks throughout the day today but I kept Emily today and that keeps a person busy. She was so sweet! Yesterday was a busy day, I worked last night, stayed at the hospital this morning until Eloise got out of surgery, then came home thinking I'd go right to bed. Nope, just as I got home, the termite man arrived! I had forgotten he was coming. He was here until just past noon. As soon as he left, I fell into the bed and entered a five-hour coma!

Miserable termites! They had invaded the door facing at the back door, and the wooden siding beneath the sunroom windows. Apparently they hadn't gotten any further, and this should stop them in their tiny little tracks. I'll be getting some beneficial nematodes in the next few days, to spray on the earth around the rest of the house.

You folks just kill me with your DST woes! You should try my schedule. My "body clock" is in such a whirl, it doesn't know whether I'm on DST or Mountain Time, or sometimes even what day it is. I wish my routine WAS so predictable that an hour one way or the other could upset it.

Had a funny little encounter yesterday - check it out a www.romeena-viewsfrommywindow.blogspot.com. Too long to repeat here. There are pictures.

March 11, 2009 - Msg 70865: Good (very late) evening, porch. Spot, prayers for Kenny. Isn't it wonderful, that he could receive that life-giving surgery, and now can look forward to many more years of good health? My dad had a triple bypass at age 70, and lived to be 86. His death was due to complications of Alzheimer's disease, but his little heart was still clicking merrily along!

PH, you have posed a very difficult question. I wish I had an answer, but I don't. Like everyone else, I can only speculate. I do think that a starting place is to define "miracle". When Jesus healed people on the spot - the blind, the lame, the lepers - certainly those were miraculous occurrences. Blind one moment, seeing the next. What else could you call it? Also, Jesus often "called the shot" as he performed the act - thus certifying the result as a miracle. On the other hand, we have many healings today that some choose to call miracles. I'm an example. In 1979, I had a mastectomy for cancer, ten nodes out of fifteen were positive, and many of those had infiltration (outside the node) as well. I received chemo and radiation as well as the surgery, and my church and my family prayed. A lot. Ten years later, when my oncologist released me, he confided that in the beginning he wouldn't have bet a nickel on my chances of living five years. Now here I am, thirty years later, and still cancer-free. A miracle? Maybe. A triumph of medical science? Surely, but is that just another way of saying miracle? To what extent does God lead and guide in medical science, in discovery and practice? As always, He leaves questions, it's His trademark. That's where faith comes in. Absolutes, unquestionable facts -- no room for faith. It's those little chinks, the slubs in the fabric, that bring faith into the equation. Who says He doesn't have a sense of humor?

As for why that young pastor died, I have no idea. Why was my little grandson born with a lethal anomaly, so he only lived an hour? I don't know. I believe that in one sense, when God created this world and all that is in it, He then just wound it up and let it go, with consequences of our actions occurring naturally. We are all free moral agents, making our choices regarding our behavior, but there are consequences. Little children die because some nut beats them up. A family is wiped out because somebody decides to drink and drive. The pastor died because some deranged individual shot him. Sometimes God chooses to intervene, sometimes He doesn't. I don't know why. If I did, then I'd have the mind of God, and that's not possible. I spent several years in misery, trying to figure out why God would let my dear husband die at age 58. I still don't know, but I finally came to the conclusion that God does know, and that's all that really matters. There is a plan that's greater than any of us, greater than the sum total of all of us, and it's God's plan. Some day, we'll understand.

Well, I'm off to bed. Eloise is doing well, they were talking about getting her up on her feet this evening. Don't know if it happened, but I'll be up there tomorrow. She'll do fine, she's a tough old bird.

Be blessed, friends. --Romeena

I am going to have to miss tonight because of church so maybe you can fill me in on the results and this new change they are talking about revealing tomorrow night...something about the judges and how they do things?? Do you remember hearing that last night?

Well MDC, I tossed and turned all night with that sciatic pain, darn it, and was up early with it. I kept putting the heating pad on it throughout the night because it seemed to help some. I broke down and took just one advil this morning. It seems to be much worse at night when I am lying down, so not sure what is going on there. I think I probably overdid it yesterday instead of resting. I ended up doing a couple loads of laundry, cleaning, cooked dinner, and watched Emily, so "NO WONDER", right? I am not a very disciplined person when it comes to being still and just sitting. I did manage to sit through all 4 hours of "Broken Trail" (with Robert Duvall) on Saturday, which was unheard of for me. No, I didn't watch it WITH Duvall, he was in the movie....wouldn't have minded that, though. He's a good 'ol Texas boy and a great actor.

HA! I know what you mean Thomas A! Thanks for making me smile (real big) this morning.

Wise words, Romeena. I also really liked what Auh2o said about all good things coming from God. While at the rehab Monday night, one of the girls was talking about how sometimes she questions God about why he allowed her to be born into the family she was in, or gave her the mother He gave her. It was very sad but I was listening to the responses of some of the other girls who had been through horrific things, too, and they spoke so much faith and it was obvious to me that they weren't blaming God but looking for God to change things for them now. It was encouraging because most of these kids have been through horrors we will never see. Most have been on the streets doing whatever they could for the next fix. I try to remind myself (when I question things in life), that one day we will be able to see how every decision and every action, effects another and even the horrible things that happen are part of the tapestry of events that will someday be seen by all, and it will be understood. God, being God, is the very nature of love and will always be good. I have to focus on that and I know he is near to the suffering and broken hearted.

OK SPOT, I'll be watching for you.

Possum, Jubi is really going through it right now and is in the hospital. She has not been able to eat and is losing weight and she had a fever of 104, which is better now, I think, but she has not been able to go home yet. She got a blood transfusion and some platelets yesterday so she should be feeling some better today.

When no one seemed to be there,
I recall the words that gave comfort-
"Give it to God in prayer".

I ask our Father to guide me,

March 11, 2009 - Msg 70875: Good morning, porch! Will you folks up north kindly keep your weather to yourselves? It's 42 degrees and raining here! It's COLD! After our week or so of 80 degree weather, this 42 is not welcome. Actually, it will probably be good for tall the new plantings in the yard, though. They'll hunker down and start expanding their root systems, instead of adding foliage, so when it warms up again, they'll be ready to really put on a show.

Boo, sounds like Bruce is going to have to dig in his heels and fight for the truth at work. Makes you wonder what on earth his upper management is thinking. Prayers for him, and for Jubi, of course.

Well, got to get dressed, drag out a jacket, and head up to the hospital to see Eloise. Got to call her first, though, to see if there's anything she needs me to bring her.

Oh, two squirrels just raced through the yard and up a tree. One of them is Fuzzy Britches. He's the oddest-looking little thing. Now he's down, and sitting on top of the tire swing, his little brown britches blowing in the cold wind. I'll bet the other squirrels wish they had some britches like his!

Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Boo- actually, after a chiropractor visit, she tells me to ICE pack it for 20 minutes, not heat.
I have been about 8 times now. Twice a week, and
she showed me on the original x-ray the way two of my lumbars were twisted, thus pinching the nerve. Now I am to go once a week for a few,
then only once a month. My insur@nce is covering most of it. Weight gain can also put strain on the
spinal column, and i had gained about ten pounds, so I am also getting that back in line.
Spot- prayers for kenny! Be happy that he got it before we end up with socialized medicine!
Well, I wrote Barak a letter. Mailed it yesterday.
Told him that 17 executive orders in 6 weeks is hyjacking the purpose of our 3 branches, and that I do not appreciate his latest order of the use of my tax dollars! I think we need a modern day
Boston Tea Party. Is that even taught in schools
anymore? (Taxation without representation.)
God bless you all.

March 11, 2009 - Msg 70878: "If the rightful owner does not appear, then finder same, keep same."

March 11, 2009 - Msg 70879: Afternoon Folks.
First off allow me to congratulate you MDC for taking the time to write a letter. I'm glad to see folks back up being mad with action. Some may say it's a waste of time, but if every one of us wrote our elected officials, me thinks we could have a real impact. So good on you.

Boo, sorry to hear about Bruce. Hopefully the higher up's will know the truth about things and act accordingly. These are bad times. We have had two high level managers where I work lose their jobs due to cutbacks. These guys both have over 30 years with the company. I pray for Bruce, and for all of us who are worried about, or who have lost their jobs. And I also think ice is more effective than heat for back pain. Not nearly as comfortable to lie on, but seems to help ease the pain more.

Rommena, I'd love 42 after this past few days. We got to 32 for a high yesterday. It is supposed to get up to the 60's next week. That makes me smile.

Spot, glad your friend got help in time. I pray for a full recovery for him.

Possum, hope them dreams don't get to wild on you. Don't want you sleep walking like Warren.

Stay dry and warm Tom. Spring is close by.

Do any of you read the Christian Science Moniter? I stumbled into an article there yesterday and in it there were some very startling predictions on Christianity in general and evangelical Christianity in particular. It's one persons opinion, but is cause to make one think.
If anyone's interested I'll post the link.

Well I think I'll head over to the Diner for the Businessman's Special. It's a hollered out tomater, and it's goo- ood.

March 11, 2009 - Msg 70880: Romeena, concerning Bruce's work, it is not really managment making a stink, but a very demanding and disgruntled woman who is probably afraid it will be blamed on her so she has picked out Bruce as a scapegoat and like a dog with a bone, she just won't let it go, even though management has asked her to. She continues to press up the ladder trying to find someone who will listen to her ridiculous agenda. One bad trend they have at his place of employment is to give in to the troublemaking women in fear of being threatened with "discrimination" against women. I have seen it happen before there....in government work, believe me, it happens often. The women and minorities are treated with kid gloves for this reason.

Well, better go get Erin from work...be back later.

March 11, 2009 - Msg 70882: Howdy, friends. Just got back from visiting Eloise - took her some flowers out of the yard and also took her a cherry limeade from Sonic - her favorite. She looks great, has been up and walking a few steps in her room, and the therapist arrived as I was leaving, with plans to walk her in the hall this afternoon. She's going to be just fine, and is having very little pain.

Boo, perhaps Bruce should go on the offensive. He could speak to his immediate supervisor and request a meeting with himself, the woman and senior management present. Then just ask her to present her case, and get it settled, once and for all. A strong offense is usually the best defense. If she has to lay it all on the line, in front of everyone, she may back down. Otherwise, she's going to continue sniping and chipping away until she convinces somebody. Also, what you said is so true. At the hospital, because women make up by far the majority of the employee force, they don't necessarily get that special forbearance, but minorities most certainly do. We have some minority, bone-lazy, worthless, can't-find-'em-when-you-need-'em patient aides who just keep hanging on in spite of complaints from the nursing staff. Makes me so mad. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying that minority workers are all lazy - they're not. We have some excellent aides among various minorities, and thank God for them. We also get some shiftless ones who are not part of a minority, but they don't last long. They get fired post haste. It's just that a member of a minority can get away with anything and outrageous behavior is tolerated, that would not be overlooked in anyone else. The only group that gets even more tolerance is someone who has a history of work-related injury. We have one aide, a mix of two minorities, who had a "back injury" over a year ago, and I declare, I think she could drop a patient on their head and still keep her job.

Well, I think I feel a nap coming on. Toye Starr has tried to lure me to my chair several times, so I think she's feeling the same way. Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

Possum, I wish I could have been in on that dream...sounds like a blast! I know Big Maude and I could have us a big time down in Yancey!

So glad Kenny is doing well now, SPOT. Glad you will be watching IDOL for me tonight. I like Scott...he reminds me of the gospel artist that died in 81 named Keith Green. They have similar styles. I just hope Scott's music is not too "old-fashioned" for America. I think that no matter what happens, someone will snatch him up for a record deal. His history is in gospel music, so maybe he can make it in that arena.

Better go to Wed night church...it's my favorite..just sittin' around with my friends and praying and discussing the Word.

Morning Friends

Asa-Yesterday we could see grass in the yard... then, it once again turned white. We only got an inch or so but we were that close. Oh well, I know Springs a coming. I did see the article you mentioned. I don't really believe doom and gloom stories too often. There is one part of the story I do tend to agree with, I wish the "Religious Right" would not have taken on such a political agenda, even though I agreed with their political stance. Here's why, I think the church should be above politics. Because, politics is an institution that needs compromise to be successful. We vote, one side wins the other loses. On questions of faith, I don't think we should compromise.

Boo-Prayers for Bruce, and you. There is a lot of truth in what you say. Crying wolf really hurts a lot of people. I hope it all gets straightened out for you two.

auh2o

March 12, 2009 - Msg 70890: Hey Auh2o. Thanks for the response. I agree with you concerning the church being above politics.
I was finding it interesting the thought that so many of our young folks in the church don't really know what it is they believe, because they have not really been taught the Gospel, but rather to many ministries have focused on "feelings". Not sure what to think of that. I agree if we are not truly studying the word in depth, we stand at risk of not having the roots go very deep (aka the Parable of the Sower). I guess I'm just curious how the writer came to the conclusion that that is what's happening in general. But the numbers he present surely cause one to sit up and take notice. Anyway, time will tell, and thank you for responding to me.

Asa

March 12, 2009 - Msg 70891: Thank you, Auh2o. I think it will be fine but I know it must be stressful for Bruce to deal with. Bruce is the kind of guy who thinks he has to perform perfectly all the time so it is hard for him not to worry. Me, I am so opposite..I guess that's why God put us together, for some sort of balance. I am much more laid-back. We used to drive each other crazy but we have adjusted over the years. He has learned not to be has hard on himself and I have become a little more motivated to excellance in certain areas.

It is pretty chilly here today! We are all praying for rain here in South Texas because we are in the worst drought we have had since 1918. Everything has turned brown except the oaks and mesquite trees. All the little ponds in the area dried up months ago. I feel sorry for all the little critters that depended on them for water.

Better get Erin off to school.

While I do agree in theory and principle that the church should be above politics, I think as a nation we have come to a point where we can no longer afford that luxury. As long as politics were being conducted with a modicum of honesty and honor, we could afford to remain apart. Those were the days of statesmen and honorable men - Lincoln, for example. Now we have Toad Kennedy, Clinton and God help us, Obama. Can you imagine Lincoln committing the U.S. taxpayers to fund abortions all over the world, as well as at home? So, it's no longer true that we can afford to remain above politics. I'm afraid the sad truth is that if the church doesn't get involved and try to "raise the bar", it's just going to get worse until it will be a slimepit beyond our wildest imagination. Now, exactly how we're going to do that - I only wish I knew. Our own laws are holding us at bay, laws that were originally written to protect us are suffocating us now.

Well, on that happy note, I think I'll go check on Eloise. Haven't seen her today. Later, taters. Be blessed! --Romeena
