January 28, 2009 - Msg 69822: Well Possum, what I was really referring to is a video that Walken made several years ago for a song called, "Weapon of Choice", by Fatboy Slim (?) I think that's right. Anyway, his dancing is pretty cool because it is really him doing the dancing...I think the song is not a good one, the lyrics may not be good, but I don't remember. Walken is really an interesting guy because he can act (drama and comedy), dance well, and sing. I guess that is why he got so far, despite his unusual looks (I prefer to say "unusual"..I don't see him as creepy, especially after seeing him on SNL. I think he is hilarious).

You're right, Hazel, these are hard times for alot of families and it is getting bad down here, too. I have two good friends who could very well lose their car dealerships soon. I hate to see that happen and I wonder what they will do.

They helped me out when I had some trojan horse virus a few months ago. It can take a couple weeks before anything is done with your post, but they will help you get it cleaned up.

You'll have to register to post there, and they will probably have you download Hijackthis and post a log from that so they can see anything that is not supposed to be on your computer.

One of the things they had me download to help keep my system cleaned up, is http://www.ccleaner.com/ if you want to try that.
That gets rid of a whole mess of junk that gets in your computer that doesn't need to be there.

What anti-virus are you using, anyway?

If you have any questions about any of the things I talked about above, just let me know. I hate viruses. I think the people who create them and turn them loose ought to get life in prison for all the trouble they make good people go through to get rid of and stay rid of them.

January 29, 2009 - Msg 69830: Good morning, porch. It's 26 degrees here, foggy, and icy. So what am I doing this morning? Driving to the hospital for a one-hour class on using the portable defibrillator, which is part of the CPR class I just got recertified on about three months ago. Don't ask me why, I just do as I'm told. No one but hospital administration would set up classes in something we've already been trained for, fifteen people in each class, starting hourly all day, and pay us each an average of $35 for that hour. Believe me, if I have a wreck on that ice, $35 isn't going to cover the $200 deductible for my car, and it definitely won't cool my anger.

I don't know if it's the same with hospitals nationwide, but mine is just going nuts with certifications, recertifications, inservices, and one requirement after another. It's like being pecked to death by a chicken. We have Skills Day, and Safety Day. We have online courses - one a month - which we must complete and pass the test. Naturally, there's CPR certification, which I understand. Then in our department we have Neonatal Resuscitation. I just attended a two-day seminar on interpretation of labor monitor strips, and I don't work in Labor & Delivery, I'm in postpartum. We do have antepartum patients, but when we put them on monitors for any reason, we notify L&D and they watch the strips on their screens. No action is ever based on what we might think we see on those strips, and shouldn't be.

Oh well, enough griping. I've got to go get dressed - have to be there by 0900, so will leave around 0830. That should be sufficient for what is usually a ten-minute drive.

Yes, Me-They, I do like the hammered dulcimer. I like the mountain dulcimer as well, in fact I own one. Can't really play it, but I like to plink around on it at times, when there's no one here. I play the piano a little too, but only for myself and Toye Starr. I have a nice piano which my husband bought for me many years ago. Just had it tuned a while back, and it still has a pretty voice.

Well, off I go. Gonna take it reeaaal slow on that ice, staying on neighborhood streets, not going to get on the highway. People around here drive like idiots on ice. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

January 29, 2009 - Msg 69831: Oh, and AFD, I'm sorry about your dear granny, and praying for a sweet transition into Glory. The passing of a child of God should be viewed with joy, but the human side of us finds it difficult to accept that.

January 29, 2009 - Msg 69832: Good morning everyone. There’s a three inch layer of snow and ice on the ground today. Sure is pretty but don’t try and walk on it. It’s in the 20s now but is supposed to get to 40 today so hopefully much will melt. Of course, all that melting today will refreeze overnight and start the whole mess over tomorrow.

HORATIO: Great to hear from you! Stop by more often.

AFD: Good to hear from you, too. Prayers for your grandmom.

BOO: I used to think Christopher Walken was really creepy when I was a kid. Since he has appeared so often on SNL, though, now I can’t take him seriously as a “bad guy.” Go figure. Remember “The Continental” sketches? Too funny! “How about a glass of champag-na?” He is a very good actor, though. He was great in “Catch Me if You Can.” And I know he could take Zamfir in a fight.

ROMEENA: On vacation several years back (at Chincoteague). There hadn’t been much on the radio and I had forgotten to bring the CD case. We were in a store (and there ain’t but a few on the island) and happened to see CDs for sale. I looked through them, and there wasn’t much, but I did see a 70s compilation CD for $3 that had a bunch of old songs I like on it so I bought it. I should have examined it a little closer. It had all those songs alright—as instrumentals. Guess what the instrument was? Hammer dulcimer. A whole album of 70s pop as played on the hammer dulcimer. Talk about disappointed. “Philadelphia Freedom” was not meant to be played on the hammer dulcimer.

POSSUM: I was never a great Skynyrd fan, though I did like their "hits." However, 38 Special hit big when I was in high school and I had their first album.

AUH2O: And not a cent for me!

Well, I’d better get to work. I’ll stop back later.

January 29, 2009 - Msg 69834: I hear ya, Ro. The reason for so many classes and certifications is because the administrators have nothing better to do. We used to call them "lunch ladies" because they would sometimes stroll through the nurses station in their suits and high heels on their way to lunch while the rest of us were dying on the vine without lunch or breaks because of the shortage of staff. They would never consider breaking a nail to help out. Used to make me angry. I worked many a shift without a break or lunch because if I so much as stopped to take a potty break someone might have a crises. Nobody ever offered to sit at the desk and keep on eye on the monitors so we could take a break, but they sure came up with enough inservices and pressured us about certifications. No clue of what it was like to actually work and no understanding about what was practical.

What a thought...hilarious mental picture, Me-They (Walken taking Zamfir in a fight)! Hilarious about the instrumental tape, too...I can certainly understand your sentiments on that one...eww.

I heard this joke from Christopher Walken, himself: He was in a barroom and asked someone, "What's the difference between this room we are in, and an elephant toot (I won't use the word he used)?"...answer: "This is a barroom, an elephant toot is a BAROOM!". hehe

His pressure is stable now and he is response but in ICU on a ventilator. I am very concerned about him and if anything happens to him it will be very hard for me. He and his wife are two friends that have bonded to my heart, if you know what I mean. I love them alot. When I left the ICU this evening, one of the nurses told us that his cariac enzymes were elevated enough to suggest a heart attack, too, but it is too soon to tell. He is my age and too young to die. Please remember him and his wife and daughters in your prayers tonight. When I was driving home from the hospital and feeling so concerned about it, all I could think about was that I wanted to get home and tell my friends on the porch to pray. Folks, I got a call from Dale's family this evening. His youngest brother was taken to the hospital with severe chest pains yesterday. He was kept overnight, then stress-tested today, which he failed badly. They put him on nitro and released him, will call him back in on Monday and do a heart cath to see what's going on. So, what did he do tonight? He went bowling!!! Men! He's the sweetest guy in the world, but I think he has grits for brains. Anyway, please pray for him. I think it should be a double-barreled prayer - for his condition, and for a measure of common sense. His wife just allowed as how she couldn't tell him what to do. Boy, I'd like to try!

Hey, Spot. What building? I went to the site, the house shows up true and clear, but I can't see into the back yard, and there's no building back there. There's a two-story house on the next street, whose roof is visible over my back fence, but I couldn't see it in the picture. Were you looking at the right house? Mine is the one that has the little island out front, with shrubs and a tree in it. Also, there are three white trash bags sitting at the curb, of all things, right beside my driveway.

Well, let me get off this keyboard and get to bed. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69854: Prayers for Matt and his family, (and you as well, Boo), for your BIL, Ro, and for your situation at work, M-T.

Just wanted to thank you all for the prayers and let you know how much they mean to me. Here's an update. My dad and uncles did not have the doc take the IV out last night. My oldest uncle seems to be taking this kind of hard (understandably), and is doing everything he can to keep them from letting my grandma go. They are now waiting on my cousin (his daughter) to come from Tennessee to see grandma before she passes. My oldest uncle is not saved and my folks believe he is afraid of dying himself, so that may be why he is so reticent to taking her off the IV. So we're still in the waiting game, and I just pray my grandma's body doesn't suffer. MDC, yes my grandma asked Jesus into her heart almost 20 years ago, and she had a Catholic upbringing. My mom relayed something from the hospital that happened Tuesday evening. Although she was pretty doped up, and with all the damage to her brain, my dad said he could hear her praying and could understand what she was saying. So her spirit was still there communing with God. Not long after, he said, she started rubbing my dad's cheeks, which had a bit of stubble on them, and he believes she was thinking he was her husband (who always had "whiskers") who passed on in 1992. Then he said she got real still and hasn't really moved (other than the nervous system twitching and such) since. He felt that that was when my grandma's spirit went to heaven, and now only her body remains (being kept here by meds). Hope all that made sense.

Good to see you, PH, and Rev, welcome back.

Enjoy that time with your grandbaby, Thomas A!

What is it about that google earth and trash day! My trash can is sitting out by the curb in my street view too. Go figure. Evie likes looking at street view, since you can see people in their cars or walking down the street up close.

Your weather sounds a bit like ours, M-T. Evie's been out of school since Tuesday. The sad part is our roads are great here in our neighborhood. The school district, though, includes parts of three different counties. Our county is the only one with paved road outside the city limits, so school gets called off for everyone even though our roads aren't bad.

Well, I guess I better head to bed. Hugs and prayers all. TGIF!

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69857: Welcome home, REV...it is really wonderful to have you back. Thanks so much for your prayers (I missed you evening benedictions). Thanks to each of you for your prayers. I am feeling better this morning. I think I was especially shook up last evening because Matt is in the same ICU that Karen was in when she passed away and it made me re-live some painful emotions. Things seem much better after some sleep.

Prayers for Dale's brother, Romeena. For healing and common sense! ;)

Thank you AFD, for sharing that very touching testimony concerning your grandmother. As hard as it is, what a comfort it must have been to know that she was still able to commune with the Lord the way she did. Really, it brought tears to my eyes. The Lord is always with us, isn't he? I feel very sorry for your oldest uncle and pray that he will open his heart to Jesus. It must be so hard for him. I do know what you mean about a person's spirit going on to be with the Lord and only the shell remaining. You just "know", somehow.

Hey Thomas A, you comin' ta Texas, Boy? Enjoy your visit to the Promised Land...where will you be, exactly?

SPOT, did you see my house and the bar across the street? haha....just lovely.

I thought I sent you a christmas card, KYGirl...maybe I just imagined it?

Better go get Erin going.

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69858: Boo, we are going to Mt. Pleasant which is about 45 minutes Texas side of Texarkana.
Thanks for asking, and everyone have a MAYBERRY weekend.

P.S. Ro, I may have to bring back a pic of that grandbaby if that's okay.

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69859: Hi All.
Just a snowingday here.
Not like this pass week all the rain, snow, cold and ice and just two days it was warm.

( OH, COMFORT ME!)
Come now, my Lord, and comort me,
The lightless night is here.
Oh, take my hand and chase away
The shadowed wings of fear!
Now while I walk the dark unknown,
Be ever close and near.
Oh, comfort me, love of my life,
My Jesus sweet and dear!

:) TOM

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69860: Good morning, porch! Thomas A., you get that picture of that grandbaby to me, and I'll get it in the album. We'd love to see that little Texan.

Ky girl, my sincere apologies. I don't know what happened. I kept the emails from each one, permitting their address to be on the list, and sure enough, there's one from you, big as life. How I missed getting it on the list, I don't know. Obviously I knew I had the email, because I moved it into that "snail mail" folder. Somehow, I just missed getting the address on the list, and I'm sorry. I've kept the list, your name is on it now, and will send it around again next year if everyone wants it. Like Boo, I would have sworn up and down that I sent you a card! I think I'd better go check my hair for moth eggs, I think I'm going crazy!

On that Google map thing, can you imagine the effort and man hours it must take to produce that thing? The overhead one I can understand a little better, because they can cover a wide area at a time, but the street view? There are teams out there with cameras, driving up and down every street in the country (the free world?) filming as they go, and they're getting both sides of the street! What a project! Sharp, clear pictures, too. My parents wouldn't believe it. Ha! Neither do I, but there it is. Good grief!

AFD, we're praying for your little granny, and for the family as well. What's happening is so typical. It's not at all unusual for an unsaved member of a family to fight efforts to let a person go peacefully. The reason is obvious - no hope. In your uncle's mind, his mother is going to some unknown place, or into total oblivion, and he can't accept that. In my seventeen years experience on the medical floors, I saw that scenario hundreds of times. It extends to the doctors, too. Getting a non-Christian doctor, and certain Jewish doctors, to write a DNR order was almost impossible. I'm not well-versed in Judaism, but I believe there are two main camps - one which believes in the hereafter, and one which does not. In Bible times, they were the Pharisees and the Sadducees, with the Pharisees taking the "fair" view, and the Sadducees taking the "sad" view. If any of our porchsters are Jewish, please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, death looks a lot different, much less frightening, to a family or a doctor who believe that the patient is on a journey to a better place. I've watched families put patients literally through torture, trying to evoke just one more breath at a time, and you have to understand how they feel. Hopelessness must be the worst state of mind anyone can experience.

Well, Joe will be here shortly, we have work to do in the front yard. Be blessed, everyone! --Romeena

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69861: Oh, about the Google map thing - those pictures are a year old or older. That dead tree in the yard next door to me is long gone. Cut down, stump ground out, and grass growing over the site now. Strange thing about that yard - no one has ever been able to grow a tree there. The one in the picture is about the fourth one to occupy that site, and they've had them on the other side of the walkway as well. They never live more than three or four years, then they just sicken and die. Very odd. --Romeena

Thanks for sharing AFD. Love stories like that.
On Christmas day 2005, I prayed the sinner's prayer with a lady who was my mom's roommate at the nursing home. She was of the Bahai faith and i had been in conversations with her for about a year, every day as i was visiting my mom. Well, on that Christmas day, she looked really bad, and over the years, i have been able to discern that "look" in residents, so i took her hand and said the prayer aloud. She mouthed a weak "thank you" and a tear fell from one eye.
I couldnt make it the next day, but when i came on te 27th, her bed was empty and i was told that she had passed Christmas night. I wonder now if someday i shall see her again.
AND WELCOME BACK REV.

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69870: Lots of prayers needed on the porch, it seems. May God help those whose family and friends are ailing.

I'm off today, which was kind of a surprise, but a welcomed one. My off days will consist of Fridays and Saturdays, I guess because I come in on Sundays to get some things done that need to be done before Monday. My supervisor is letting me come in after church so I won't miss that at least.
And I like having Fridays off anyway, because no one is around and I can have a day of peace. :)

Boo, the Walken/SNL skit I was talking about was one in which he is playing a supposedly suave foreign-type guy, who is trying to sweet-talk a girl in his apartment. Well, I just suppose it is a girl because it is shot with just Walken talking into the camera, so it is like you are seeing it from the girls perspective.

Anyway, while he is trying to talk "romantically" with this girl, his glued on mustache started peeling off on one side of his face, and would flap as he talked, and it was one of the funniest things because they just kept rolling the camera and he played off of it.

They tried to recreate it on a later episode of SNL that Walken hosted - by purposely not gluing down the mustache properly - but they couldn't match the silliness and spontaneity of the first one.

Anyway, I have to go get my oil changed in the van. I would do it myself(usually do), but I don't feel like it. Too cold, and I am either coming down with a bug, or that smoke at work is affecting my throat more than I thought. It's not really all that sore, but scratchy.

Have a good day all!

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69871: Hey everyone. It's been a busy day here but I wanted to stop in before the weekend and say howdy.

AFD: Prayers for your family.

BOO: Prayers for your friend. Y'know, you seem to have so many good friends. You sure are blessed.

STERLING: That skit was "The Continental." It was very funny.

REV: Welcome back!

Sure wish I could zoom in on your houses. Neat, but creepy at the same time. Maybe next year.

Thanks for all the prayers. It helps. It's just a very anxious time.

Have a great weekend. I'm in on Sunday so I'll chat with anyone around then. Are y'all gonna wear earrings?

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69873: Good afternoon, everyone. Joe and his helper just left, and now my front yard is neat, clean, pruned, mulched and looking good, just like the back. And I'm pooped. Gonna get a quick shower, then hit the bed for a couple of hours before going in to work this evening.

MDC, it wasn't Dale (my late husband) who needs the prayers, it's his brother Robert, but thanks for the prayers anyway. I'm sure the Lord knew for whom they were intended, and it's the thought that counts.

Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69874: Yes, Me-They, I feel blessed. Our little church is a close-knit group and it seems like we have been hit with many trials in probably the past 2 years. I don't know if it is like this everywhere, but it Texas, church people are family. It's like you have your immediate family and your church family and both are very important to you.

Yes STerling, I remember that Walken skit now, thanks!

January 30, 2009 - Msg 69879: Prayers for your cousin, Possum. God can sustain her with His great grace.

I wanted to let you know that Jubi went in for more chemo yesterday. Her counts were finally high enough. Actually, she was in kid's church Wed. night and was doing cartwheels. Anyway, her mom says that she has been doing fine through the treatment and has only had a couple of short bouts of some nausea, not much and is tired, but overall, doing very well.

I also have a postitive report on my friend Matt. He is more stable today and they are going to begin weaning him off the respirator. His pressure is staying stable and they were able to use a bronchoscope to take a look into his lungs today and obtain some cultures, that way in a few days they will know exactly what "bug" they are dealing with and will know how best to treat it with antibiotics. Thank you for your prayers on his behalf...God is answering.

Watched some TAGS on TV tonight and enjoyed it. Erin said, "I don't like those colorful episodes. Barney is barely in 'em and they aren't very funny'. Even a seven year old can discern the difference!

Big day tomorrow...we are moving my MIL into her own apartment. This morning while I was visiting my sister, she asked me if MIL was moving out tomorrow and I kind of spontaneously broke out in song.."The sun will come out, tomorrow..bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow, ther'll be sun...! Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow. Your only a day away!". I feel like I am about to be let out on parole...well, I am exagerrating, but it will be nice to be "just us" again. This apartment is too small for 5 people and MIL's widescreen TV and I feel like I have NO privacy. She sits in her green recliner about 2 feet from my bedroom door ALL the time. She admitted to trying to hear what Bruce and I were saying to each other in our bedroom. I couldn't believe the lack of manners while living in someone's home and there were many other things like that to deal with. Well, it's almost over! :) :) :)

Better go...
