Welcome home, REV. We missed you, too. Hope you are getting some much needed sleep.

Glad you got to stay home last night, RO. Isn't it amazing what we can do with computers these days? It seems like it is always something new.

It is wonderfully cool outside today! After all the heat we have endured for over 4 months without a single break, it is a real breath of fresh air (literally).

Better finish my coffee and get going...talk to you all later.

September 16, 2008 - Msg 66185: Good morning, everyone! I got a good night's sleep and am now ready to tackle this day, much better prepared than I would be if I was dragging in from a 12 hour shift! Carpet cleaning man arrives in an hour or so, to remove the marks of Starr's indiscretions before my friend arrives on Friday. That little hound is getting better, but she will still anoint the carpet now and then. Resistance to housebreaking seems to be a Maltese trait.

All the guest bed linens are washed, but I have to get the beds remade, do a bit of dusting and light vacuuming in those rooms, and freshen up that bathroom. I may get to my bedroom as well. I'll leave the rest of the house until closer to Carol's arrival. The guest area will stay clean, because neither Starr nor I ever go up there unless there's company.

Well, better go feed this little dancing doggie, and perhaps myself as well. Spot, send me those pictures! Be blessed, y'all. --Romeena

Anyone out there? Gomer, Gomer, Gome...

September 16, 2008 - Msg 66192: "Booa" is here...sure is quiet around here lately. Where in the world is Hazel? I miss that chicken...(sniff)...

Well, Bruce decided to take a few days off just to relieve the stress and we went out to a small beach near us and he and Sean did some wade fishing while Erin and I stayed on the shore and relaxed, picked up seashells, etc. It was a perfect evening and nice and cool. The best part was that we saw 2 racoons. One was going down to the water's edge to wash something, couldn't see what, and then later while Bruce and Sean were hiding and changing into their dry clothes...now picture this...they are bottomless and about to step into their dry shorts when about 15 feet from them, up pops this huge racoon right in front of them. They are frozen, staring at the racoon and the racoon is frozen staring at them. The racoon decides the view is just not that interesting and moves on to a nearby trash can. We watch him as he climbs up and drops himself inside the can and holds on to the rim by his long toes. He fetches out an old hotdog and pops back out to eat it on the ground, seemingly oblivious to the audience that is watching him only 6 feet away. He was hilarious. We watched him for awhile before he just casually walked back to the water's edge. So cute! We had alot of fun. I had never been that close to a racoon and he was so cute with his black bandit's mask. I have to admit though, that the racoon scene from the movie "Elf" kept popping into my mind so I kept my distance and didn't offer him a hug.

Well, I am waiting my turn in the shower...hope there is hot water left.

September 17, 2008 - Msg 66194: Good evening, all. Boo, have you investigated the tankless water heaters for your new house? I have them, and they're great! They come in electric or gas versions. Mine are gas, because my old tank-type heaters were gas. You almost have to pre-wire for the electric ones, because they do pull a lot of power, but they're still cheaper than regular heaters in the long run, since they only operate when someone is actually using the hot water. The beauty is, you would no longer have to "hope" there was hot water left for a shower. You always have hot water with those things.

I'm off to bed. Have to be at the hospital early tomorrow, for an annual recertification day - safety standards and procedures, skills checks, etc. Should take 3-4 hours. Argh.

Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

Hey there, Possum. Hope you have a great day.

It's much cooler here, too, REV and a very welcome relief.

Boo

September 17, 2008 - Msg 66197: Good morning, all. Boo, I'd love to have been with you there to see that raccoon. I think they're the most interesting animals. There used to be one that would visit my yard at night, and check out the bird feeders. He especially enjoyed the corn that's in some of the feed, but I haven't seen him in many months. Some panicky neighbor probably called the city, unfortunately. Some people just have no tolerance for wild thing. I even know people who will swat and kill those tiny lizards, the little baby geckos. One woman warned me that it would "sting" me with its tail! That would be quite a feat, since it's not a stinger. The little things come in the house all the time. I just trap them under a glass, slip a piece of paper under the glass, flip the whole thing over, and there's the lizard, in the glass. Then I give him a lecture about the dangers of entering people's houses, and take him back outside! There's one in here right now, but I haven't been able to catch him.

About those water heaters - they're more expensive than the tank kind, about $600 each, but they save a lot in energy cost. I had two 40-gallon tanks in this house, which we needed when there were six of us, but not now. I was just keeping eighty gallons of water hot at all times for one person??? Also, they're much smaller - no big bulky tank, just a box about the size of a sofa cushion, and it mounts on the wall. The electric ones are even smaller, about like a large phone book. They just sit there until you turn on the hot water, then they kick in and heat the water as it runs through them. That can go on all day, so you never run out of hot water. I love 'em!

Well, gotta run. I have to go to that silly re-cert day at the hospital. Like I didn't have anything else to do. After nearly thirty years, I have to go through the stations and prove to some little upstart nurse that I know how to start and tape an IV, or the steps in administering blood, or what to do if I find a frayed electrical cord? Good grief! Oh well, it's futile to argue, so off I go.

Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

Just another sunny day here, slight frost last night, but hey, that's what I love about autumn.

We have been without electricity since "Thunderstorm Ike" came through this past weekend. Now we're good to go.

Boo- Them racoons are sure purty but stay clear of them when ya can. If they think you have something that they want, they have no problem coming over to get it. Sounds like you guys had a great day, good!

AFD-I was gonna respond to your post (before we lost eltro) about the Brad Pasley video, with Andy. I have seen that behind the scenes show you mention and thought it was great. It's always good to see Andy. I loved how Brad addressed him with such reverence, very nice.

Well, like I said, we've been without power the last few days so, as you can imagine, everything has turned sideway here. So, I guess I should do something.

Talk to ya later.

I am still alive! Hewlett Packard had us do a recovery system because we had a corruption in our Windows Media and without my knowledge it erased the entire hard drive so I have spent the last 2 days re-installing everything. Also, our van needs a new computer. We've put $2k in it this year alone. Bryan wants to keep fixing it becuase he says eventually it will be new. Plus a car payment would be more than the repairs. So I've been busy trying to find someone cheaper than the dealer. Anyway, I haven't forgotten about y'all! I hope to be able to read the archives soon.

September 17, 2008 - Msg 66211: Auh2o, Bruce tells me that he has seen raccoons climb up onto deer feeders and use their fingers to turn the little aparatus (sp?) on top that causes the feeder to shoot the corn out onto the ground. They must be very smart. I just hate that some folks hunt the little things.

Must have been hard to be without power since the weekend. At least it's not hot in your neck of the woods. We were lucky here in Texas to get a cool front because there are still many in the Houston area that will be without power for awhile, it seems.

That water heater sounds really nice, Ro. I will have Bruce check into it.

No M-T, but they have those TV dinners that Andy likes....(by the way, I am sitting here with baited breath waiting for that moulage).

Had to go into town today to have blood drawn (Sean and me, actually). I have been putting off getting his lipids checked again but it's time to face the music and deal with it. I was also overdue for my labs. They had to poke me twice because I have these really sneaky veins that slide around when the needle hits them. I just hate that. It's not the needle stick that bothers me, it's the fishing around once they're in there....yuck. They also wanted a urine sample, and guess what? I went right before I got there, of course. Figures, doesn't it? Anyway, I got that out of the way.

Better go. Sean needs some help with math. It is starting to get harder and I am math-challenged!

Anyway, I was so disgusted with how the weekend went, I haven't done much online except check email. I did post a blog about the weekend, but that's about as far as I got.
Things are rolling right along with our new house, everything is back in the finance company's hands & we hope to go to closing by first of Oct. September 18, 2008 - Msg 66218: Wow, it's midnight and I'm home! When I got to work at 6:45, the board was loaded, and it looked like we'd be getting a bunch of deliveries, but one by one L&D sent them home, and by 11 we were overstaffed. So, I offered to go home. They had an extra aide on one of the floors that was about to be sent home, so she came down to help out and off I went. She costs about 1/3 what I cost for the shift, so it was to the hospital's advantage. She wanted to work, and I didn't, so everyone is happy. The hospital saved money, the aide will get a better paycheck, and I got to come home. I love a win/win/win.

I really needed to come home and get some rest. I've been up since early this morning, spent the morning at the skills day at the hospital, then out to the cemetery with Eloise and our kids, then to a late lunch with them, then slept about a half hour and off to work. Joe is coming in the morning to dig out a new flowerbed just for irises, which will take all day, and I have something going at church tomorrow night, so I wasn't going to see my bed for another 24 hours if I hadn't come home. Woohoo! Don't you know I jumped on the chance! God is good.

Well, it isn't helping anything if I don't actually go to bed, so guess I'd better do that. Mavis, I'll catch up on your blog tomorrow, I hope, and I'll post HM's picture she sent. Oh - for the color on your house, I agree - lose that yellow, but a soft cream color would be nice, or a creamy beige. Or a pretty dove gray. I'm eager to see what you choose - I know it will be pretty.

Be blessed, everybody! --Romeena

"What's odd is that we've heard so much about plastic water bottles and baby bottles and so little about bisphenol A and canned foods. According to the Environmental Working Group, cans are the primary source of human exposure to the chemical. (Most metal food cans have plastic linings that prevent spoilage but are rich in bisphenol A.) Numerous studies support the environmental advocacy group's notion that cans are key if you're trying to avoid bisphenol A. A study published in 2007, for example, found that 99 percent of children's exposure to BPA occurs through food. After the Environmental Working Group tested 97 name-brand canned goods, it concluded that 1 in 3 infant food cans, and 1 in 10 food cans overall, contains enough BPA to expose a woman or infant to levels more than 200 times the government's traditional safe level for industrial chemicals."

Pappabear! You have been stuck up that tree long enough, tho I have never heard of computer rental, I'm glad they have it! Interlopers have been running rough shod thru town since that bear trapped you up there. We need you man! Ever since Gomer joined the USMC, the cannon has been stuffed with rotten tamaters. HA
I'm glad the pony was able to wade thru all that water to get my letter to you. You will have to check out the rifleman board also!

September 18, 2008 - Msg 66234: I just read about the FDA report in the paper. I rarely use canned food, luckily. Now and then we have tomato soup from a can. I buy our veggies fresh or frozen...don't like 'em from a can. I do most of my cooking from scratch or buy sauces and things in bottles and we don't buy bottled water. I use a water filter and put water in a glass pitcher in the frige for the kids. Does anyone know if polycarbonate containers are safe for storing water?

Yes, Millie is still missed and admired for her great grace and strength.

Me-they, don't use that kind of language...there are ladies present (naught). So where's the moulage? Put up or shut-up (hehe).

Well, Erin came home with one of those fund-raiser catalogs from school, and MERCY that stuff is expensive. She is required to sell qo items and that won't be easy. They are asking 20+ dollars for a box of Christmas cards and 9 dollars for a role of wrapping paper. Ridiculous. I'm not happy about it. I don't like asking people to spend their hard-earned cash this time of year. I guess they could look at it as a donation to the school. I'm kinda like that guy who cut in on Ben Weaver's business by setting up his little shop on the street. What was his name? He wasn't much of a salesman and neither am I.

Hey there, Pappabear. Glad you could stop by for a bit. Hope to hear from you again soon.

Better get back to work...need clean shorts, Me-T?

September 18, 2008 - Msg 66238: Good GRIEF, Boo! That stuff IS expensive. I usually buy from one of the nurses whose child is selling wrapping paper, but it's not that high. As for Christmas cards, the ASPCA and the Humane Society keep me supplied with cards, because I send them a little donation in return. $20 for a box of cards? They'd better be lined in gold or something. However, when I've bought the wrapping paper, I've found it to be nice, strong paper, and a generous amount for the price.

Well, we got about half through with the yard, so Joe and crew will be back tomorrow. My friend comes tomorrow evening. Hmmm. Guess she's just going to have to deal with a not-terribly-clean house and the yard as a work in progress. Fortunately, she's that kind of friend, who will just say, "Who cares, and how can I help?" Friends like that are hard to find.

Now I'm off to a fish fry at church. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Mornin' SPOT. I'll ride in the back of the truck and hang my head over like a dog. Ever wonder why dogs get irate when you blow in their face, but they like to ride with their head out the car window? Don't make sense to me.

I'm just passing by on the fly, got to get a bit more cleaning done in here before Joe and his crew arrive. We have so much to do out back still, and I've only got the front half of the house clean. Carol's room is ready, her bathroom is clean, and the other two bedrooms are clean, in case she should decide to use one of them instead. However, my room, the living room, kitchen and sunroom need to be vacuumed, the kitchen and entry need to be mopped, and the office needs to be cleaned up. (Oh, mercy, my desk!) I have to leave here at five to pick her up, so as you can see, this will be a busy day for me.

Homemaker and Mavis, your pictures are in the album. Homemaker, send me one more and I'll make a sub-album just for your pictures. You have nine, and I make a sub-album when you reach ten. Mavis, you've had a sub-album for a long time, of course, so folks, that's where you'll find her house pictures. After looking at those pictures again, and the color of the roof, I can't see the house in gray, but a soft and creamy beige would be nice, with chocolate trim. Whatever you choose, I'm sure it will be great!

Well, off I go. Busy, busy day! Be blessed, all. --Romeena

September 19, 2008 - Msg 66250: Hey, Hazel! It's great to see you. Please don't stay away so long, we miss you, and worry about you. Now, if Merri would just check in! Where is that girl?? --Romeena

Has anyone tried out the Match-O-Matic yet? It's fun! They give you two quotes on a number of issues, one from McCain and one from Obamma. They don't tell you which is which. At the end, it tallies up the scorecard and tells you who you picked. It's pretty neat, and has some funny graphics, especially at the end. Check it out: http://abcnews.go.com/politics/MatchoMatic/fullpage?id=5542139. It only takes a few minutes.

September 19, 2008 - Msg 66252: Morning Family:
Thanks for the breakfast REV. I was slow getting up this morning, so that was wonderful. I finally got that much needed sleep.
Going to take the elderly lady next door to the nursing home to see her husband. Think I may take her out to lunch, because she doesn't get pampered too often like that. I took care of them for several years while he was in the home, but now since his heart attack/stroke, he has gone to a nursing facility and she is home alone. She is very capable of staying there, just lonely. So I still go once a day and take her a "meal" or help with laundry (wringer washer/ clothesline) Makes me appreciate my automatic sooo much! Since breakfast was so good, think I'll take her to Cracker Barrel for lunch. They serve wholesome meals, plus enough for her to have leftovers.
Gotta get going... ~New Neighbor

September 19, 2008 - Msg 66254: God bless your sweet heart, New Neighbor. You have been working a 6 day stretch and the first thing you do when you get off is help someone else. The lady you are helping out is very blessed to have you. I am thinking of the verse in the bible that says something like, true religion in the sight of God is to minister to widows and orphans in their time of need and to keep oneself unspotted by the world.

M-T, I have been on a similar website but not the one you mentioned. I will try and check it out..

Great family picture, Homemaker. Thanks for sharing it. Somehow you look much younger than I pictured (might have something to do with clean living and the beautiful long hair of yours). Hubby is cute, too and the boys are adorable.

Mavis, really groovy-looking pad you bought yourself. I can't wait to see what color you are going to paint it. It looks like it is surrounded by beautiful green trees. Did you say it was in a secluded location?....better watch out for "Jason"....hehe...it's almost October, you know. Which reminds me, are we having a party at the Remshaw House next month? We should plan a real wing-ding.

Better get on with the chores..

Oh, forgot to say that Erin took her fundraiser catalog next door to the really sweet elderly lady who I know must be living on SS. Well, she was adamant about buying something to support Erin and ordered 20 dollars worth. I noticed that she was having a yard sale so I went over and bought something to try and help compensate for the money she had spent. She kept trying to give me things and didn't want to take my money. She is really something, bless her heart. I try to keep an eye on her and her husband, who looks like George Burns with dyed hair...he even has a cigar in the side of his mouth at all times. I just love nice neighbors.
